I dislike your personal taste in music, so i have to watch it on mute, which is like watching TV with no sound. its just not enjoyable. please just record game sounds, if we want to hear music we can play something we like.

otherwise i think your video shows you spamming 1 skill over and over and still doing well with your thief, which highlights one of the issues of the class that many posters on this forum try to pretend doesnt exist.

there should be short cooldowns on your skills to force thieves to use different skills to create a burst combo instead of 3-3-3-3 like you show in the video. they dont need to be long, like 5 second cooldowns so if you want to spam skills for burst you are forced to use multiple skills like everyone else has to.

What a "casual" player really is, in my view

A few notes about “Casual Players”.

1. Casual Players don’t read the forums. They take the game as it is and have little interest or involvement in what goes on around it.

2. They don’t generally feel entitled to anything. They will do content that they can, and ignore stuff they cannot do.

3. They aren’t very vocal, considering their portion of the player base.

4. Time spent playing isn’t actually all that an important indicator for player mentality.

People who post on the forums are naturally more engaged in the game than most players. They care more and are more invested. Hence they are more opinionated too.

I would say you are wrong on nearly all counts. your notes and definitions are your opinions, and i would personally disagree.

just because someone is not hardcore does not automatically mean they dont care about the game or wont post on the forums. thats just being ridiculous.

i would have to disagree with the op, and agree with rehashed jibe tube.

i am casual because i dont want to feel obligated to be online at dedicated raid times week after week.
i am casual because i dont want to have to study the pvp meta game like its one of my college courses just to have fun.
i am casual because i think a life outside of the game is worth something.

if i wanted to be a hardcore gear grinder i would play a game like wow where the game really boils down to being able to play all day every day while giving up any semblence of a real life.

personally i think that gameplay caters to the lowest section of the playerbase.
these people dont want to win through skill.
they want to be more powerful through better gear so they can auto-win.
being bad gets covered up by superior gear.

If they truly did, we’d be seeing more guardians and mesmers than we are seeing right now.

As it stands, you’ll almost never see mesmers using portal in sPvP.

Also, define “competitive game”

the thief class is a low risk, high reward class. it has some of the highest burst and condition damage available with some of the best ways to avoid retaliation or just avoid combat altogether if things are not going their way. to compare it to mesmers or guardians is just being ridiculous.

though when you ask me to define competitive game i have to assume you are just trolling.

the things that pass for logic on this forum are always amazing.

do you honestly think the thief class would be so popular if it wasn’t so powerful?

personally i hope the patch moves the class towards a more balanced position. low risk + high reward is obviously broken which is why the class is so popular.

edit – also comparisons to warriors are always so genuine because warriors can turn invisible to avoid retaliation and teleport across the map when things are not going their way.

In TF2, you’ll see a large number of spies, and snipers on a 12 man team when you go into random pubs. Usually 3 or more of each.

In reality, a well put together team of 12 players would have one sniper in most situations, and have one spy who goes on and off.

People rarely care about what’s really effective. They play what they feel is “cool”, or “leet”.

in competitive games people always gravitate towards the most powerful classes available.

its really just simple logic. people want to win. the powerful class increases their odds.

this is not rocket science.

Are thiefs op? No, it just due to someone saying hey look at what this can do, infact the questionable the backstab build which has become famous has a burst of 45 seconds whereas many other classes can continuously use there bursts, is it fair that I can burst every 45 seconds as a thief? Well apparently it is not. Is it fine for a warrior to smack down an ele with 15k damage in spvp from 1500 range with a much shorter cooldown? Yes, yes it is…

The problem with the thief is not that it is overpowered, even the cnd>Mug>backstab build is not overpowered, the problem with the thief is its popularity and thanks to it the thief is getting nerfed.

Dude, you are basing your nerf-opinion only on videos? You haven’t even fought such a thief? You can’t be serious. Seriously, how the hell can you start talking about balance without even having fought one? Who the hell do you think you are? You only made an “okay” necromancer vid. I’m not trying to sound rude but I honestly don’t know how to answer in a polite way.

Also the vid has a few bots in it. There was a vid of a necro killing 10+ bots so I guess nerf necro then.

http://i.imgur.com/yYBHz.jpg

Multiple videos of multiple thieves doing the same exact thing over and over and over and winning multiple 1vNs. The closest thing to this are some 1vN elementalist movies, but at least those required skill.

Some people seem to get really emotional when they think someone is going to take their candy away.

yes, but all those thieves are good players, and everyone they kill is a bad player.

also 100b is exactly like bs because it does not root you in place for 3.5 seconds, and warriors can also turn invisible to avoid retaliation, or teleport across the map when things are not going their way.

thieves fit perfectly into the low risk-high reward model and do not need adjusting.

in my opinion thats really just kind of dumb.

its not enough of an increase to keep the no-lifers happy that they can insta-win through sheer play time getting them better gear.

its enough of a difference to make the people who want equality in pvp angry that no-lifers get an advantage beyond being able to play 24/7 from their parents basement.

so all they are accomplishing is making everyone unhappy.

The root of the problem

in Thief

Posted by: Fritz.5026

Fritz.5026

it can be made really simple : there is way too little risk for the reward.

thats it in a nutshell right there. thieves have some of the best ways to avoid and exit combat in the game, and some of the best mobility in the game with a shortbow. if a class with those mechanics also has some of the highest burst and condition damage in the game you basically just made a recipe for too strong.

highly mobile with easy ways to escape combat = low risk
big burst and condition damage = high reward

its inherently broken.

people are like “im sick of the complaints about thieves”… none of the other classes get complained about as much.

i personally hope they nerf thieves because i would like to play one, but i refuse to play the easy mode op class.

edit – but i know, everyone except thieves are bad and everyone should have to design their character around countering your class.

Wait, by “perma-stealth”, are you talking about the person just… using CnD, waiting it out, then using CnD again immediately after? Just that, and not much else?
I can see how that might be annoying, but… it’s not like they’re winning any fights.
And where does Backstab fit into that, since using it gives you Revealed.

You think CnD is the only form of stealth to be used in combat? do you even play this class?

I have 5 forms of stealth that can be used during any combat… backstab chain, to heart seeker, to CnD and repeat.. is very easy, and if your CnD cost is not up yet, just popping into stealth with any of the other 4 forms of stealth can generate enough int to backstab and CnD yet again.

Unless you trait for it, you’re only going to be gaining 2 initiative for non-shadow refuge stealths, and shadow refuge is an invitation for the opponent to AoE half your health away.

This proves you have no clue on this subject. If you stand in the middle of your shadow refuge for the duration you’re a bad thief and should feel bad.

You’re not even taking into context that initiative has a innate regeneration or the passive signet ability/traits which regen it while spec’d differently.

I am not trying to troll, but you cannot have a serious conversation with thieves on this forum.

As far as the posters here are concerned they are all good players and everyone else is bad. Its just a coincidence that all the good players chose to play thieves and has absolutely no indication on the classes strength whatsoever.

everyone else is just bad, except thieves.

If thief was not as OP i dont think we would see Spvp with up to 4 or 5 thieves in every teams.

this quote was from another thread, but this is what will cause thieves to get nerfed faster than anything else.

if every pvp match becomes lopsided with thieves it will leave A-net no choice but to nerf the class. The game is not called thief-wars.

Yes, just by raw statistics (~>50% of every spvp match consists of thieves), it is inevitable that a nerf will come. Hopefully they will truly make things more balanced and make the thief class actually require skill to play.

95% of all statistics are made up.

I usually see teams of all guardians and bunkers.

you can say that, but any person can go to the various forums on this site, and this is the only class section that is covered in complaint threads.

you can pretend its some imaginary issue and that everyone else is just bad, and you are the sole unique person who is not bad in the world, but in the long run its not going to matter. people will see the complaints, they will assume the class is overpowered and they will make that class so they can have easy wins.

i can go to most of the other class forums and find jokes about “to fix your class, just make a thief and spam #2” with a bunch of people laughing about how true it is.

…but whatever, believe whatever you want. if you cant look around and see it, you never will.

If people looked at the long term they would support balancing the class instead of fighting to stay overpowered. If your class stays overpowered it will become overpopulated to the extreme, and then Anet will have no choice but to dole out heavy nerfs to restore population balance between classes.

GW2 is not living up to its potential

Whether I go full tank or build the glassiest cannon ever, my play style doesn’t really change.

Totally agree, the variety you get between traiting / gearing differently is minimal, this is further compounded by the relative lack of variety between classes and how they “solved” getting rid of trinity, by bascially making every class a DPS class with a self heal, a bit of CC and some utility tacked on.

Nor does it help that classes are somewhat simplistic, both the the lack of skills / variation of skills and the whole simplistic traiting system, which again just leads to a lack of variation.

The overwhelming feeling that I get when I play GW2 is that it’s a game that was released too soon.

Very much so and it is precisely why games companies get stick, it is no good having the motto “when it’s ready”, then releasing a product a very, very long way short of being ready.

I would disagree. I find there to be enough difference in classes that I can have a difficult time choosing which class I want to play at times. Though I suppose you could be really nitpicky and be like “all melee hits things and all ranged shoot things” but then I would simply wonder how that is different than any other game.

Also you have to understand that this game is designed with a pvp backbone. Yes it does have a large pve section that you can level up and explore, but every player should notice that this pve section does not have gear grinds where the game devolves down to most time = most powerful.

The design of the game probably seems strange to many players who are used to playing pve based games where the pvp is just something they tacked on to keep people sated. However, i dont see that as a shortcoming of this game, but just an inappropriate expectation from the player.

dont forget to add that 100b roots you in place and takes 3.5 seconds to animate and if someone actually takes that much damage they were basically standing there and letting the warrior hit them.

…but sure, lets compare that to an instant attack and act like we discovered something new and unique!

Pistol Whip has all of those cons, and has gotten nerfed to the point that it does like 1/3 the damage 100b.

Obviously this an entirely different argument, but it does articulate the point that 100b needs to be looked at.

you are also looking at things in a vacuum.

outside of 100b greatsword is a pretty awful weapon. the adrenaline attack is so awful most people just ignore it completely, and bladetrail and whirling attack are mediocre at best. rush is pretty good, but it has a 20 second cooldown.

i know the only reason i would ever use GS is 100b, and honestly i would rather use a different weapon because its really boring only having 1 good attack on your bar to use.

i couldnt really care less if they nerfed 100b.

also with the auto level feature in the game it doesnt really bother me that much that thieves are allowed to be in a different class than the rest of the game. i can make a new thief and join the bandwagon in minutes.

i just get tired of seeing ridiculous arguements from the thief community like the rest of the world are mouthbreathers.

i can teleport, stealth, have the highest burst damage, highest condition damage, and easiest way to escape battle when things are not going my way. my class embodies low risk and high reward.

they may have changed a couple things you like, but seriously, people keep complaining about this one class and its just been allowed to be in a different league than the rest of the game.

Lying isnt going to help your argument. Warriors are extremely mobile in PvP if they want to be, they have a number of leaps and charges they can use to escape a battle and gain swiftness as well.

are you seriously going to compare those options and put them in the same league as stealth and teleport?

Thieves need to speak up - stop the uncalled for nerfs!

in Thief

Fritz.5026

The only survivability that thief has is stealth.

this is so understated its ridiculous.

if things are not going the thieves way he can press a utility skill and gain stealth where we can no longer target him for attacks. he can then start running away and pull out his short bow, when he becomes visible he can then teleport even further away and at that point is essentially uncatchable.

my warrior on the other hand only has one option. keep fighting until hes dead.

and yet, you still think its justified that you can run away any time things are not going your way and you still deserve the highest burst and condition damage around.

its simply not balanced.

other classes cannot run away when things are not going their way. they have to stay and fight and die.

Upcoming nerf called for?

in Thief

Posted by: Fritz.5026

Fritz.5026

the main thing that i think many thief players dont want to look at is their mobility and ease of escape.

i keep seeing thief players bringing up 100b, or necromancer condition damage, or what have you.

yet they never even slow down to think that none of these other classes can press a utility skill and vanish from target, or whip out a shortbow and teleport across the map.

anet said over in the necromancer forums that they want the thief to have the easiest way to escape from fights of all classes.

a class cannot have the easiest escape mechanisms and also the highest damage, either burst or condition. its just too powerful.

it becomes small risk for high reward instead of high risk, high reward.

i understand people want to stay powerful, but this is not rocket science. you should not be able to outdamage classes you can also run away from at any moment things do not go your way.

Warrior or Guardian?

in Warrior

Fritz.5026

to me it really comes down to aesthetics on many things.

i like how the warrior uses hand to hand weapons as well as guns and bows.

i dislike how the guardian uses staves and wands and has blue effects on everything.

i cannot speak for you personally, but i would pick the one you like playing the most. in the long term there are going to be many patches and changes and its pretty doubtful that any one class will be the top performer the entire time. its better to choose the one you like playing the most so you still have that aspect you are happy with.

i dont care what weapon you use, if you just stand there and let someone hit you for 3.5 seconds you are going to take a lot of damage.

its certainly worlds apart from an instant attack, like say backstab.

well anet really needs to decide on their direction for the class.

they stated over in the necro forums that they wanted thieves to be the most ‘slippery’ class that can run away from fights at their choosing.

that is all fine and well, but a class that can always run away at its choosing should not also be a class that can be considered the top burst or condition damage class in the game.

thats just too powerful. i really hate to be like that, but honestly.

if you have the easiest way to escape as well as the highest damage there is very little risk to your reward. the whole high risk, high reward paradigm just went out the window.

i just dont think any class should be able to played like 2-2-2-2-2 stealth and wait for initiative then 2-2-2-2. they really need to look at the mechanics of the class in my opinion. im not saying its too powerful or whatever, just that the class mechanics support making one-button wonder players.

I’m not really sure what build you think can do 2-2-2-2-2 stealth…. Sword 2 is a shadowstep, that can’t be it… Pistol 2 is a very low damage shot that applies vulnerability, I doubt that’s it… Dagger 2 does piss-poor damage until the target is under 50%, that can’t be it… Shortbow 2 is decent but would be absolutely horrid if you just rapid-fire hit it… Nope, no idea what you’re talking about.
However, the Warrior with a greatsword can do the same damage as a well played thief by doing: 2! autoattack for 8 seconds! 2! autoattack! 2! They tend to live longer, too, without having to actively avoid attack.

im not exactly sure how to respond to this, because its flawed in more than one way.

first off, GS and 100b are so over rated its silly. GS has one of the worst adrenaline attacks of any weapon choice for a warrior, but yes 100b. well the thing noone ever wants to actually look at with 100b is that it takes like 3.5 seconds for the attack to run its course while you are rooted in place. if the attack was instant i could see the uproar over its damage, but seriously, if you let someone attack you for 3.5 seconds straight you are going to take a lot of damage. 100b is not the problem there.

secondly, are you seriously acting like a one button playstyle is something that should be defended? you can change 2-2-2-2 to 3-3-3-3 if it suits your favorite weapon better, the point remains the same. its the only class in the game that has mechanics that support mashing the same button over and over and creating one button players.

like i said, im not claiming the class is overpowered or whatever else, i will leave that for others to discuss. i just think the mechanics of the class need to be looked at since its essentially designed to be the choice class for bad players and on top of that it gets stealth and teleports. its just really lame.

No, people putting high end cards in junky premade pc cases or cheap after market cases with crappy cooling = burned out video cards.

I almost always leave vsync disabled unless it is absolutely needed like in elder scrolls games where disabling it causes game breaking bugs and never have overheating problems.

having ridiculous FPS has not mattered since people stopped using CRT monitors.
you might as well set it to vertical sync because modern flat screen monitors have very real limits that supersede your FPS rate.

Things that will damage your hardware include using settings that are outside of your hardwares capabilities or neglecting to clean out your heat sinks once in a while.

while it is possible for a program to force your hardware to run outside of its limitations that is not in the case in any modern game that has graphic options you can personally adjust.

I think people have skewed expectations.

If you changed the topic to “Is it just me, or are the guardians ranged damage options nothing compared to warriors?” you would get an entirely different conversation that i would imagine would have everyone talking about how much worse guardians are for that type of thing.

You cant just pick out one element of a class and then deem the entire class as worse because of it. That is just looking at things in a vacuum which is highly inaccurate. You need to look at the class as a whole.

Also you have to enjoy the class you play. If you choose a class simply because you think its the top performer out there, but you dont really care for its mechanics or style, then when a new patch comes out and things change you will be stuck with a character that is no longer the top performer and you dont really like. Then you will be on the forums whining and complaining about it and you wont be happy with the game anymore.

Because often the topic is what does and doesn’t work, or why a certain trend is good or bad in the genre, so it’s helpful to have a bit of perspective when talking about such things.

the thing is these arguements tend to be invalid based on one major flaw.

if things and trends are working in one game, and thats what people want, they will go play that game.

they are not looking for a cheap imitation of that other game, and trying to be that just means you will fail. anyone who has been around the last many years has seen countless clones just wind up doing very poorly. the clones never exceed the original and just end up being poor copies.

if a game today wants to succeed it needs to come with a different approach and offer gamers a new experience they cant already get somewhere else.

thats what gw2 does.

i can understand what you are saying, but if i wanted to play a healer i would play a game that supported healers instead of gw2.

just like if i wanted to play a loot based game i would play one instead of gw2.

i think the biggest problem most people face on this forum is that for some reason they refuse to play the games that are available that support their preferred playstyle, and isntead for some reason want gw2 to be changed to suit their needs.

Some of us were just expecting something else, I read the no trinity stuff, so wasn’t expecting healers or tanks, I was however expecting more hybrid, more varied and generally more complex classes.

More along the lines of support / hybrid classes in other games, eg – loremaster/captain in LOTRO, or chlorodom in Rift, etc, what I got with GW2 is largely DPS classes with a heal and a bit of utility tacked on, that can be changed a little bit by having a bit more CC or bit more healing (but not a level that approaches hybrid/support in other games), etc, but overall very samey and very simplistic.

In regard to the OP I somewhat agree and I don’t even have a huge thing for playing healers, merely that I am missing the variety in playstyle that healing gives.

And no I don’t expect GW2 to change, their whole class system is based on a sort of dumbed down MMO approach that is sort of FPS/MOBAish, which is why I’m downloading something else as I write this.

every game you mentioned was a wow clone that used the holy trinity.

i dont think “no trinity” means what you think it does.

i can understand what you are saying, but if i wanted to play a healer i would play a game that supported healers instead of gw2.

just like if i wanted to play a loot based game i would play one instead of gw2.

i think the biggest problem most people face on this forum is that for some reason they refuse to play the games that are available that support their preferred playstyle, and instead for some reason want gw2 to be changed to suit their needs.

I read the original post multiple times and all i can really gleen from it is that you think every game should be a wow clone.

well there is a reason most wow clones fail, and that is because if people wanted to play wow, they would go play wow.

i am personally glad for a mmo style game with an end game focused on pvp where i can actually compete without sacrificing my life over it.

if i wanted to play a wow style game, i would play wow.

thats why i am here.

Underwater Combat Difficulty

i dislike how the traits you pick up for your favorite land weapons may not work for your underwater weapons and vice versa.

thats my only real gripe with it.

Thieves have nothing else going for them.

i can show you why thieves get complained about and why you get nerfed.

skip to about 3 minutes when he actually starts fighting.

all he does is press #2 and then a stealth skill when he runs out of initiative.

….and he is still killing people with those impressive tactics.

im not trying to hate, i wanted to play a thief when i bought the game, but i think the class should be more challenging than this. i would feel lame to play this class right now.

GreatSword most over rated weapon?

Honestly i think they leave the GS with a couple issues, like 100b rooting you, and having a low damage burst move that comes with a mediocre buff so that it doesnt completely out class every other weapon available to the warrior.

as it stands if they made 100b mobile and made the burst move awesome… noone would play any of the other weapon sets.

and that leads me to saying that the weapon sets really need to be looked at.

the funny thing is if you read you last post, and would stop arguing for 10 seconds, you would see that actually agree with what i said.

by making the warriors #2 skill aoe it would make the warriors surviving a downed state more dependent on the warrior than just facing bad players.

anyhow, i know all you really want to hear is you are right and you win. so there you go.

lol

I made my sentence about it – which was in agreement about Warrior having an aoe #2 skill – and that’s all that was needed. It seems everybody has jumped from talking about hammer’s weakness to Vengeance being “weak” because it’s not an instant skill.

your very first post in this thread was about vengeance, and every time you have posted since has been about vengeance. i mean seriously, you just want to argue for the sake of arguing.

i would actually make points, but why bother, this discussion is not going to go anywhere. you will keep arguing because you want to argue.

i never said it should be an “iwin” button, i simply said it should be dependent on the warriors ability instead of facing bad players to actually ever work.

as far as your second section goes then why have most of your posts in this thread been about vengeance? it seems you are just looking for excuses at this point.

your abilities should not be dependent on facing bad players to work. there is no ‘skill’ in that.

Personally I don’t really consider Vengeance to be about “skill” anyway, considering that to use it you need to be beaten anyway.

then it should be replaced by something that a warrior can actually use to benefit him.

i find it hard to believe that people think you should have one of your extremely limited ability slots taken up by something that is only useful when you face bad players.

either the skill needs to be replaced by something that is worth the slot, or it needs to be dependent on the warriors skill to be effective. the end.

I would disagree that you should have one of your slots being filled by an ability that is only useful when you are playing against someone who is bad.

It should be more designed so that if the warrior does everything right then he can get it off, but if the warrior messes up then he fails.

your abilities should not be dependent on facing bad players to work. there is no ‘skill’ in that.

Rifle/Sword Warrior switches to Greatsword/Rifle Warrior

well… its a rifle, so… i guess it should shoot like a rifle…

skill 4 isnt all the same, its got some rings around the bullet as it travels through the air.

They could do more with guns than just a standard rifle shot though to add some flare.

Think of John Woo style action movies. They could have the guy do some fancy animations while hes just shooting his rifle.

Sure it may not be practical, but you cant tell me that doing a triple twist while swinging your hammer or whatever else is actually practical either. Its there to make the game graphically entertaining.

In my opinion this just really points to the shatter skills needing to be improved.

You should not be getting in the position where you feel ignoring the shatter skills and summoning skills that make up a huge part of the class is actually advantageous.

Consider what happened to Diablo 3.

you all seem to be confusing the very small number of people posting on the forums complaining that are obviously used to that other popular mmo way of doing things with some large number of people.

i have watched these forums for a couple days and its pretty obvious that the vast majority of players are happily playing the game.

this game has a large player base right now and the forums are moving fairly slow considering. if this forum was nonstop complaints and just a zerg fest of “i quit” posts, you might have some point, but right now its quite the opposite.

you all just happen to be the malcontents who think if you complain hard enough you really can turn that orange into an apple.
