http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aryanization

Aryanization is a term coined during Nazism referring to the forced expulsion of so-called “non-Aryans”, mainly Jews, from business life in Nazi Germany and the territories it controlled. It entailed the transfer of Jewish property into “Aryan” hands in order to “de-Jew the economy”.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dekulakization

Dekulakization was the Soviet campaign of political repressions, including arrests, deportations, and executions of millions of the better-off peasants and their families in 1929-1932. The richer peasants were labeled kulaks and considered class enemies.

Thanks for the wikipedia knowledge.

Elites are crap in PvE and too powerful for sPvP. Instead of being smart and separating the two areas of the game they balanced everything around sPvP and dumbed down PvE.

I once suggested that the elite slot should be usable for normal skills. People were against it because they felt a normal utility skill in that slot would be “too powerful”.

That just about says it all I guess.

What you’ll find is that in this game learning to use the dodge ability is much more important than anything else.

Since that’s the same for every class, not doing so, inevitably leads to much dying. You need to gear up and try to avoid being under level and dodge dodge dodge.

Then you’ll be fine for most leveling stuff but yes some things you better do with other players.

There is no such thing as a tank or proper healer in this game. It’s a choice in design but I agree with lothefallen that it didn’t work out well for them.

But everyone here is dps and support. It’s just a matter of how much of each, ranging from sort of full dps glass cannon to full support. A bit too simplistic in my view.

Why did they choose to keep portal zoning?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gehenna.3625

Gehenna.3625

Instead of making Tyria one big seamless world why did they choose to keep using portal load screens from GW1? can anyone explain why?

Also some sanity on the server side. Lets assume 2mil players world wide (similar number stated by a red post somewhere in the past week). Thats a little short of 38.5k people per server (average). Now lets assume that that each zone has its own process within the server, that means for the map you are on, the server only has to worry about 1.5k people per process (reality it is much less since not all 2m are on at once).

Conclusion, zoned map areas means less work for the server to do per map, meaning less server lag for us all.

Those numbers are really fictional. Just because 2 million people own the game doesn’t mean they’re still playing it. In fact we know a good number of players have left.

The reality as you just put as a sidenote is what is you should’ve focused on. And reality is about much smaller numbers. Already having hundreds of people in the same map is already a strain on performance. That’s why WvW areas are capped much more strictly than a server as a whole.

It’s really a good choice in the end if it improves performance. The big downside is the loading times for each area, especially towns but I think I can live with that as such if it means better performance overall.

c : having no particularly distinctive quality or application

Especially letter C represents the class structure and combat design in Guild Wars 2.

Can you be MORE specific?! Like give me an example of game where you have a good variety of classes and why do you think that all classes in Gw2 are the same?! I really have no idea why are you saying that. You are trying to be a wise guy. And that’s not a discussion in any way.

Just because you don’t get, doesn’t mean you should call him a wiseguy.

The truth is simply that there is too little definition in GW2. The classes are distinct in name but not so much in purpose. So a ranger or warrior or elementalist are different names, technically with different names but their purpose is to dps and support. Both really is best. Then the rest of it depends not so much on your skill choices or trait assignments (what could have been depth but isn’t in the end) but on your ability to dodge and ress team mates.

This is what gives it all a generic and non-specific feel to it. Trinity games have clear roles. I’ve played mostly Aion and SWTOR myself as far as MMOs go and GW1 as well. What I see there is that there are clear roles and different ways of doing those roles. In SWTOR for example you can play a tank in heavy armour or light armour. Different types of damage mitigation. Also healers there have different styles.

The combination of roles and styles and the possibility to choose skill trees with different directions and the ability to use all skills you learn gives characters more depth and gives me more to work towards when gearing up. Why?

Because the choices you make matter. Now, it doesn’t have to be the set trinity for me in a game but I do want to feel that when I equip gear or choose skills or traits that they matter on a fundamental level. In GW2 they do make a difference but not enough to matter in basically the whole game (sPvP aside).

I believe that PvE in GW2 is boring because they insisted on balancing skills around PvP and taking roles out of the game. This simply results in a anyone can do anything situation which leaves flavour only really. And even though the classes do have flavour the game lacks there as well especially in character development.

You see, a lot of people like to feel like they are progressing, that they are going somewhere with their characters. The higher the level in GW2, the less significant it is. You don’t unlock any new skills anymore, new content becomes more and more sparse. I argued before that the max level in this game could be 30 because of that. After that you only really unlock dungeons and new leveling zones. Nothing else. Gear progression at max level is an issue also. For actual stat progression there’s not enough and max gear, except the ascended items is too easy from that point of view. On the other hand the casual approach wants more and better skins and there the game is surprisingly lacking. I say surprisingly because they had so much better design before.

And in the end, endgame gear is either dead easy or crazy RNG grind. Also moddability of gear is very limited with just one upgrade slots. For me it’s just too little of everything.

So put it all together and I see a picture of dumbed down PvE that’s spiced up with insta kills and massive hp bosses and I am not surprised that a lot of people got bored with that. I know I did.

I don’t really understand how so many people still like this game (although I have no idea how many still do) but that doesn’t matter. If the game is still a success, well, that’s great for you guys.

But please, if you don’t understand that people can have a different opinion, don’t just accuse em of being wiseguys.

The game is bland when you are used to games where choices do have consequences and I don’t just mean MMOs. Games in general. If I make a necromancer here or a warrrior really doesn’t matter. Some may see this as great freedom. But for me if choices make no difference, it means nothing to me. And that’s what is the case here and why PvE is so uninspiring. In my view of course.

Why do PvE bosses seem to equate to...

Gehenna.3625

A lot of bosses are afk style, but you wouldn’t actually go afk. Some bosses have one hit kills shots as part of their repertoire, but yes generally the bosses in this game are about insane hp and damage.

So what do you need then? Learn to dodge and ress team mates and auto attack usually does the trick for damage. There are a few bosses that require a little more but generally that’s it.

I agree with Vasham, but I want to go a step further. These bosses also make sure that you can win against them no matter which skills or traits you pick. There are a few expections here and there but generally it makes your skill bar and trait choices irrelevant.

This is especially important because the skills are balanced around sPvP, you know, the least played part of the game.

If you want interesting boss fights, I think it would require the whole combat system to be redone. Doubt that will ever happen.

Holy Trinity Contradiction

Gehenna.3625

The issue isn’t a lack of trinity as such but on a larger view the lack of being able to define your character and what you can do with it. A trinity of roles is something a lot of people are familiar with and so when you take it away it will be missed.

For some this is a good thing for others it’s really a miss. In either case it’s possible though that people look for something else to define their character. And this is where the real problem starts for me, there isn’t really anything that you can do instead to define yourself. Skill bars are too rigid and the trait system is virtually meaningless.

So all in all it’s great they wanted to get rid of LF2M need tank/healer but on the other hand a fair amount of people feel this game doesn’t offer much meaning or definition for their toons, so even though there are different classes, it doesn’t give you much to play with in my view.

The moment that Anet make it so that choices in traits actually make a noticeable difference and skill bars become interesting again to create builds as in GW1 for example, I think more people would enjoy defining their character.

Right now you can do pretty much anything in this game (except sPvP perhaps) by choosing random skills and adding points in the trait system randomly, without even looking. Sure, it may be less efficient to some point, but it means a dungeon is done in 40 mins instead of 30 mins but it can be done easily just the same. This is possible because the content doesn’t require much of the player and when it does, it has more to do with dodging and ressing than skills or traits. So even if you make a lot of bad choices you can still manage ok.

That may be nice from one point of view but I don’t think it’s enough for a number of other players that could’ve been retained. Oh well, Anet makes their choices just as we do

Ah I love it. Even proven conclusively wrong, you’re all still wriggling around for technicalities.

“They never said that Legendary items would be Best-In-Slot.”
“Yes they did, here’s a quote proving it.”
“THAT DOESN’T PROVE ANYTHING!”

There is nothing to discuss or argue here. You made the statement that they never promised Legendaries to be the best in slot, and I have a quote that proves they did in fact say just that. Don’t try to get technical now and try to look for loopholes. You are wrong. They made the promise, and they will be held accountable for it.

Doesn’t mean they’ll do it.

They said it was intended to be bis and that they will be raised when ascended weapons come out so they remain bis.

But they haven’t said anything specific on what happens after that. What happens after a level cap raise or another tier of gear after that? You see, their quote allows for them to deviate in the future.

For all we know at some point the level cap goes to 90 and new level 90 gear comes out with level 90 legendaries…they will be bis for level 90.

Do you honestly think that at that stage when a new level cap comes in that they will let people have level 90 weapons at level 80 right when that expansion comes out? I sincerely doubt it.

I want some complexity that replaces the lack of roles or different roles to choose from. But something to choose that actually makes a real difference beyond the name of my class.

Suggestions?

Already made them in various threads. But think about a complete rework of the trait system as well as the UI for it. Clarity in tooltips so you can see the numbers change when you change traits and atttributes. I mean, why does a tooltip not tell me I get a 10% of something and when someone else sees the buff on my toon it tells them I got 10% of that something. A skill bar with more freedom to select skills rather than being linked to weapon sets and being forced to take one heal and an elite that is worse than your normal skills. Actual need for strategy. Tougher dragon fights, making it possible to fail those events and not get the rewards.

There really are 3 basic issues here:

Lack of transparency in the UI, making any existing depth virtually invisible.
Lack of strategy in group activities.
Lack of freedom and flexibility in the skill bar.

@Kizyc

They are not facts. Just because the devs say something doesn’t make it the truth or a fact. You should try not to trust people who try to sell you something too much. It’s not wise.

I came back to the subtlety issue, because of a simple reason. It was unsubstantiated and the only thing that could’ve been a useful argument in your post…if you had something to back it up. But you didn’t.

Also people like you keep wanting to push me in the “trinity for GW2” corner.

So let’s break this cycle. I DO NOT ASK FOR TRINITY IN GW2.

Get it?

I want some complexity that replaces the lack of roles or different roles to choose from. But something to choose that actually makes a real difference beyond the name of my class. The whole game is about inconsequential choices, even the story line.

The game still has roles: 2 of them. DPS and support. But everybody has both. So again not really a choice. The trait system you could do with your eyes closed. You can add points randomly.

Yes, it does make a difference but not enough to actually really make it worthwhile looking into it. sPvP is currently dead, PvE is bland and WvW is zerg. So who cares what you choose? It’s the fact that all these choices don’t really make a big enough difference to matter. That’s my concern. As I stated earlier, I think the OP is right about some of his symptoms but not his solutions.

I do not see trinity as a solution for GW2, but the game as a whole is just too simplistic because any complexity that does exist is really of little or no consequence.

Freedom if choice is pointless if the choices are meaningless. Also there are different types of players to consider. I cannot play the character the way I want in this game at all. Because of the lack of roles, first of all I cannot choose a role. This means I cannot make that choice. Again different players want different things. From my point of view your freedom of choice just means not making choices.

Perhaps you and the OP have to consider that GW2 is not the game for you like trinity games are not for me. I never really got into WoW and I used to hate games like EQ2 because of two reasons: forced teaming and trinity. There were no real alternatives though so I dropped the MMOs years ago and weren’t back until GW2 was released. Currently there are still plenty of trinity games and very few games where the trinity does not exist. Even less of those are fantasy mmorpgs.

Oh and that is a fair comment. I just come here from time to time for the discussion. I stopped playing GW2 when fractals came out and cleaned out my characters and gave all the gold to my wife who still plays.

Let me just state again, that I do not think that the trinity is a solution for GW2. I said this already but people keep confusing my wish for more choice and complexity in roles with wanting the same old trinity. That is in fact not what I said and am still not saying that. The game is too simplistic for me however is it is now and even though I welcome new ideas, GW2 didn’t come up with a better one than the existing trinity in my view.

What ticks me off most is that people respond more to what they think I said, instead of what I actually said. On the one hand it’s easy to misinterpret but on the other hand people just want me to mean something because it suits them better.

Again I DO NOT ADVOCATE THE TRINITY FOR GW2.

It wouldn’t work for GW2. What I do wish is more actual choices that make the game more interesting, have more depth, to replace the lack of role choice. Something is missing that simply hasn’t been replaced by other choices. That’s not the same as wanting the trinity in this game. If it some point the game improves where I want to play it again, it wouldn’t be adding the trinity.

The choices are not meaningless, the distinctions are merely more subtle. The consequences are most likely exactly what ANet wanted them to be, more rewarding for those that diverge from the beaten path.

Fractals as a dungeon is the best tool ANet has so far rolled out to both teach and emphasize this. Good Fractal groups are not the ones where “everyone does her own thing” but where each member is using their strengths in a coordinated fashion to get that objective. The same goes for WvW and SPvP, there is a distinct difference between those who roll in the 50 man train and those that can hold or take a tower with eight people. These are the crucibles that distill the roles, even as granular as they are, that already exist. If you are not playing in those, you really aren’t learning the limitations and strengths of your character.

Anyone can run with no skill into a zone event with fifty players and get the gold reward without consequences. That isn’t a failure of game design, but an accommodation for the weight of numbers. The risk elements withdraw in favor of simple scaling because the game devs consciously made the decision that participation is more important than some esoteric “balance.” They want people in events, not create barriers to entry by skill, class or time invested. That is why so many of the events are not instanced.

As for the OP, while many of his opinions are just as valid as others, he isn’t entitled to express them as “facts” or “truths.” When he then peppers them with ad hominem replies to those who differ, and liberally inserts personal attacks against the developers in hopes of shoring up his “knows better than all of you” credentials (along with the age old pre-disqualifying rebuttals of a debate pedantry) then he is only deserving of public shaming and his points are largely lost as casualties of negative noise.

I would suggest rereading your own post, I even quoted it for you, and realise how often you state things as facts yourself.

Calling choices subtle is total bull by the way. How is it more subtle? How does an absence of actual choices make choices more subtle.

How is it subtle that you must take a heal skill on slot 6 for example? The choices in this game are pointless because the effects of the choices are negligble. It doesn’t really matter what you do.

What’s subtle about making fractals the one place to grind by making it the most rewarding activity?

I can go on.

To me, and that is of course my opinion, what you might call subtle, is what I call superficial. I could equip a weapon, add whatever skills in the second part of the skill bar, add traits randomly, without even looking and equip full magic find gear and still do level 80 dungeons. Sure, the party might suffer, but who cares right?

No, I do not see this subtlety you vaguely refer to and the rest of your comments is full of the same opinion-as-fact stating that you accuse the other guy of.

They did put something in the place of the trinity – freedom to play your character the way you want without being forced in an arbitrary role. I’m feeling that the trinity is missing and it is a good feeling..

Oh and the trinity are not arbitrary roles. Anything but. I also stated that I don’t think the trinity would be what this game needs btw. But what good is freedom of choice if there’s nothing to choose really?

I don’t want to play a part, or be a cog in someone’s machine. I am good at playing a Ranger and Warrior. I enjoy playing a Ranger and Warrior and Thief. I’m only OK at playing a Thief, but I’ll get better. I also enjoy playing a Necromancer, Elementalist, Engineer, Guardian and Mesmer. I haven’t played them long enough to know how good I am at them. But they are all different and distinct. .

They are different and distinct in flavour but not in what part they play. It’s like saying you have an engineer and a psychologist and you both end up having the same job working at McDonalds. That’s how GW2 feels to me. It’s all dumbed down so that everybody can pretty much do everything.

I don’t want to be a lackey in someone’s organization. I don’t want to know my know my place. If I did, I’d be playing Thomas the Train..

This is the thing. You are al lackey in this game and you do have a place. It’s the second to Trahearne. That is your place. Your class doesn’t make a kitten difference. You see classes do not need to be fixed to a role for me. For all I care all classes can fulfil all roles in a game for me. In SWTOR for example (just as an example), most advanced classes can fulfil 2 of the 3 roles in trinity. I can still choose a class and choose the role I want to play.

But for all of it’s freedom, you will see that people are still looking for their place, because it’s only natural to make choices and decide what you want to be. But what’s the point of choice if the results of these choices are meaningless? Freedom of choice by itself has no meaning if the choices that are available have no meaning. In other games I do not feel forced to play a certain role, because I can choose and play multiple characters. So plenty of choice. Restrictions I only find here in GW2 on the skill bar level and trait system, but that’s another issue.

They don’t support a role choice. They support a wider variety of choices rather than a few limited choices. I have plenty of choices in real life. None of them are which prison to go to for the rest of my life. Adding the choice of which prison I want to go to for the rest of my life would result in fewer choices other choices and less freedom.

A wider variety of choices? There is nothing to choose. That’s the point. You have less choices in this game actually and that is the freedom you perceive. You don’t have to choose a role on any level. I don’t care if it’s part of the class, team play or whatever but a few choices are still more than none. That’s what you don’t get. You are not being held responsible in this game for your part. That’s the freedom you feel.

Look at the threads about MF. People who are in a dungeon with MF gear, being less effective and therefore costing the rest of the party time and effort, while you rake in the rewards. Again, no one can tell and you are not being held responsible.

How many people just auto attack in boss fights? These things all come because it doesn’t really matter and since there is no clarity in any shape or form about who does what, there is also no accountability.

True freedom is a lie. What you see as freedom I see as a restriction. Why? Because three choices is still more than no choice.

If you then go down to the skill bar, then you see you must play a certain way. Where is your freedom now, when you must take 5 skills from weapon choice (whether you like the weapon type or not, whether you need those skills or not), and slot 6 must be a heal and slot 10 must be an elite that only is elite in PvP/WvW.

PvE in GW2 is superficial and meaningless because you don’t make choices and there are no real consequences.

Boring.

I don’t know if it’s realistic to make such a change in a game like this. The extent of redesign needed to bring the trinity role into the game may make this a moot point altogether.

I think I do agree with some of the symptoms the OP describes, but I do not think his solutions are realistic.

But which issues are there, because of the lack of trinity?

I am not so much interested in what’s better between a trinity or lack thereof in this particular game, but I am more interested in what the trinity actually represents: role division.

In a team, the idea is that everybody plays their part. And you would play the part that you are most comfortable with or enjoy the most. Now, games have classes and skill trees, roles etc. so people can make choices. You choose a class, a gender, a race. You start playing and make choices about which skills to equip which activities you do etc.

Choice.

What I believe the underlying issue to be in GW2 is the lack of choice on a few elemental levels and there’s nothing that replaces this. Role division is one of these elements and the one that is relevant to this thread.

I am not saying that we need a trinity as we see in pretty much any other game of this type, but when trying to innovate or change habits, just taking something away doesn’t really work. You need to put something else in its place or people will continually feel something is missing.

It seems to me that when you say the trinity goes out, that it would be best to replace it with another role division rather than none. In the end people want to play their part and say I am good at this or I enjoy this.

When you build an organisation, you need certain jobs to be filled. The jobs are created based on need and this makes sense to the organisation. If you create a community, people also fulfill differnt roles. It’s natural.

So what happens in a game where there is no need for class types? We have heavy armour classes but what can they bring to the table that other classes can’t and actually is needed?

Play warrior cause it has great dps.

No, everybody is on a single scale between support and dps. Just move the scale from left to right and there is your character somewhere on that line. We have glass cannon elementalists for example on the dps side or support engineers on the other side. Just a couple of variations, many more exist with the same classes even.

In fact you can vary endlessly…as long as you stay on that line between dps and support. Sure you can make a healy or tanky build but it’s not needed and in the end the party wants enough dps from everybody so you can go through the dungeons more quickly. I think my complaint here is that between support and dps you have two dimensions that are not distinct in their roles instead of 3 dimensions with clear parts to play.

The bottom line for me is that the trinity aside from everything else is a clear role division and it’s something that many people do look for. Where do I fit in? What makes my class different than another?

How many classes can wield a GS?

Role division is lacking in this game. Call it good or bad, it is missing and this is something that makes GW2 “not the game they were looking for”. The lack of role division is clear by the absence of a trinity but only because nothing was brought in to replace it. Skills, classes, traits…also these do not really support a role choice.

But I suppose if I look at the personal storyline in this game, your character’s role is indeed the part that is secondary to everything. Still, bringin the trinity will not be a solution for GW2. I would suggest to Anet though that they’d have another look at their classes and think about what they can do to make the classes more distinct.

The problem in most discussions is that people don’t actually say what they mean.

From what I’ve seen on the subject of RNG, is not so much that RNG by itself is bad but how it’s done. Everybody understands that there’s such a thing as drop chances but in the end it’s things like legendaries and fractals that have RNG elements that mean that the vast majority of the time you don’t get what you need. So how many times is ok for you then? Do Fractals 20 times, 50 times, 100 times?

The problem with certain probably rates is that they are so low that there is a significant portion of players that can do fractals lots of times or try for a precursor. It’s when the balance tips so that people experience it as chance > work that people call it RNG. Why does one player get the drop after 2 runs and another still nothing after 30 runs? Is that fun? Is that fair progression?

The added issue here also is that there aren’t any alternatives. Thereby reinforcing that the only way you can get something is that one particular way and you just have to do it till you get lucky. Which realistically might be after a very long time or even never at those probabilities. At least that is how it is experienced. That means there is no satisfaction or reward of effort. It just means you were lucky. It’s not a reward that you worked for like with tokens or for mastering something specific. Nope, it’s just lucky. An afterthought.

NcSoft did this in Aion very strongly as well with Miragent armor. It had a lot of work in it but for one piece also a big RNG element. It was a very expensive craft and a very small chance of success. For a lot of people this meant they never got it or it was outdated by the time they did get it. How they approached legendaries here instantly reminded me of that.

I do agree that GW2 can be judged for its own merits, away from GW1, but I also think that on many levels the game simply doesn’t deliver what I expect from a MMO today.

Guilds in Guild Wars are not well done. The trait system is uninspiring, the skill bar is restrictive and inflexible. The world is too big. Too many levels (who needed 80 levels on start). Bad story lines and worse voice acting. Too little story, too much random event stuff etc.

Now people will have different opinions but for me the game by its own merits simply didn’t deliver for me.

I don’t think it’s p2win but I do think the focus is too much on the gemstore and I do feel uncomfortable with the idea that people can get gold via gems and level to 80 with crafting in a matter of hours. What’s left then? Fractals I guess. No, it’s just not working for me. And well people want to be level 80 because a lot of gamers are goal oriented. Most guys are I guess anyways, but it feels like you got somewhere and can now work on other things with your character. Just isn’t that much level 80 stuff and that does invalidate the whole leveling process.

I think the problem there is simply that by making leveling mostly inconsequential for most content it invalidates the actual leveling process. The game would’ve been just fine if there had been 50 or even just 30 levels, especially because on higher levels they don’t actually add anything. No new skills, no new gear pieces. Dungeons could’ve all been made level 30 just the same if they wanted to. Somewhere along the line the leveling doesn’t feel like progression anymore, it’s just adding the number to 80 to get it over with.

Anyways, it’s a big subjects and these are some of my thoughts and why I think GW2 doesn’t deliver for some people.

I think the OP made an interesting thread here.

Many of you are familiar perhaps with the so-called rules of the internet. Well I’ve got a rule for games as well:

Rule no. 1: If the game allows it, someone will do it.

The OP is doing it on purpose and why? Because not only does Anet allow it but worse they encourage people to play this way. The OP explains very well why he does it and even though I find it lacking character on his side, I cannot blame him at the same time for doing this.

Waypoints. Was this a good idea?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Gehenna.3625

Way points are fine. You still have to actually walk to the waypoint in the first place in order to use it. The system in GW2 is actually an improvement over GW1. In GW1, you could be in a party and if 1 member went through a gate, it would bring everyone through. Players could get from one side of the world to another without ever actually traveling through the areas between. I like the way points much better.

That was only possible in GW1 because of the instanced nature of the game and the waypoints were actually locations (towns/cities). You could get runs to specific places which I think added to the game. And no you couldn’t get runs to everywhere. Only in Prophecies could you get runs to most places. In factions and nightfall they didn’t allow for that.

In GW2 the problem for me lies in two parts. Cost and size of the world. I actually think the world is way too big. Too many zones to start the game with. Waypoints then make the world more accessible but it gets a bit funny if you are more casual and don’t do fractals every day to have to cough up 3-4 silver for one waypoint click.

All in all the game probably needs them so people can jump to events more quickly, but I think that the waypoint system was much better in GW1 than GW2, but this is one of these items where GW1 was instanced and GW2 has a persistent world. So, I find it tough to compare the two really.

For a MMO however it is a bit odd, I agree, but between events and the world being way too big I suppose the game needed something and this is probably cheaper and easier to implement than mounts and such

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen forums about killer diseases that have kinder things to say than the majority of the forum going community has to say about this game.

I personally don’t get it, a four month old game with monthly updates and this much content is incredible and it can only get better. If you’re hoping it’s going to head back to the direction of GW1, you’re likely wasting your time. The Devs have stated multiple times the games are completely different, it’s not just a sequel, it’s a completely different entity.

If you were unhappy with the so called ‘vertical progression’ you may just get more upset as it has been stated that in future expansions upping the level cap is a possibility, though not guaranteed. The ascended gear will continue to be introduced into other aspects of the game, they’ve admitted they made a mistake in the way they handled it and it will become more world friendly.

But short from that it really would be better to experience the new content yourself, you can get an impression from the forums, but you’ll need to take it heavily with a pinch of salt and wade through a colossal amount of kitten before you find something actually relevant.

I do know what the value is of general forums.

The OP is deciding whether to come back or not and my initial response was simple. I don’t like it but my wife does.

To me that seemed pretty neutral but people always jump on what they want to hear/read.

Of course the OP would be better off playing rather than asking here whether it’s a good idea or not. I suppose that was also my point, that people feel differently about it, even within my own home….which is fine.

There are some elements in this game that weren’t working for me but that could change in the future.

I am not asking that they go back to how GW1 was, but I use it as a comparison because Anet also made that game and was able to manage depth in the combat system but it’s lacking here for example. Now I don’t care how they do it, doesn’t have to be the GW1 system at all, but it needs to be better than this….at least for me.

I really don’t need this game to die or start doom threads to validate my opinion. I do hope that some discussions here add to Anet rethinking some of their strategies. They made mistakes with GW1 as well but also managed to turn things around a few times as well.

If anything that’s what makes me think there maybe some positives for people like me in the coming year. I deleted all my characters for example. There are two reasons. First of all there’s nothing to get for gold sellers and if indeed the game has some changes that make me want to try again, I’d rather start over from new. A fresh start.

I do allow for the possibility that I might play again. Then I might find myself in the position the OP is in, but I won’t ask the general forum for advice. It’ll be my own decision.

How do you define "win" in gw2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gehenna.3625

Gehenna.3625

in what way is GW2 different from these other games when they added Ascended Gear.
not to mention Anet hinted at them most likely raising the level cap in expansions.

Content isn’t gated like in other games. You don’t need ascended gear to do anything in the game.

incorrect, Ascended Gear is the only way to get Agony Resistance, which is the only way to do higher levels of Fractals.
and again Anet have stated you will need this for future content they add to the game.

You’ve seen everything Fractals has to offer in terms of playable content within the first ten levels, in which you don’t need agony resistance. The only difference between level 1-10 and above are “very slight” additions in boss mechanics.

That doesn’t change the fact that it does gate the higher levels of Fractals and that more content will be gated in the future as Anet already said themselves. As soon as you get LFM must have AR in chat, you know there is gated content. Just the way it is.

So whereas the impact is relatively small content wise. It’s not just the content that matters but what people are actually doing. If most people are doing high level fractals you are cut off from that group of players because of gear. Simple as that. You are out of the loop as it were.

As for winning, well I agree that fun should be the determining factor, but it means different things for different people. Some might have fun doing puzzles, others have fun doing WvW and pwning a lot and others may feel accomplished to have max stat gear. And others enjoy messing around with builds on their characters…. Or any combination thereof

So what winning means or fun, depends on who you talk to. For me this game won’t be fun until the combat system gets an overhaul and ascended gear is a full set of gear that can be gained in various ways, including other PvE activities and WvW at least. That would be a good beginning.

I quit playing cause the game just bores me and it didn’t grab me like GW1 did, however, my wife still plays and she enjoys it and she does love that new outfit. So I sold all my gear and sent her the gold so she could make gems with it.

I’m playing SWTOR and she’s enjoying GW2. Works out that way

Mind if i ask why your still on the forums i mean i felt the same way about SWTOR you do about GW2 but i dont hang around there forums.

As for the op there always adding. And updating content to this game jan and feb are sapose to be huge

Some people still like to keep up with the games progresson

Exactly, I played GW1 for a long time and you never know, perhaps at some point Anet will make some changes that turn the game around.

And I still want Anet to make this a better game from my point of view.

Still think it would be more productive to actualy log on and play the new content for a few hours than it is to log into the sesspoll we call gameing forums (not just gw2) to see if there is anything that holds my intores

That is your opinion, but I have mine. You can think what you want but in the end I decide what I like to do or not and I am not impressed by people who try to tell me what to do, especially since you guys have managed yourselves to completely derail this thread from the original topic by asking me about this instead of focusing on the actual topic. Your sneer about low self-esteem is unnecessary and uncalled for.

And I never said GW2 was pay2win. That is your assumption, I in fact said it wasn’t but I do agree it devaluates people’s efforts when you can buy levels etc.

But I don’t call that pay2win. For me pay2win is being able to buy gear with real cash that is more powerful than what you can get in game. That is not the case in GW2.

I wouldn’t call it pay2win as such, but the OP does have a point that a lot of achievements in game can be bought. I also find that disappointing, because it does invalidate a lot of content this way.

Good call, that is the first argument against RMT that has some real merit. I guess there are people that are really serious about achievements, those would certainly be somehow affected by this.

It’s a simple thing really. If you put effort into something then it has a value for you. If then someone comes by and gets it cheaply, the value of your effort suddenly is compared to the cheap way. Originally the achievement had the value of what you put into it. And all of a sudden someone invalidates it by giving it a different value.

For example, if it takes you 20 hours of gameplay to get something and somebody buys it for 10 bucks worth of gems. Then your 20 hours are no longer represented by the effort but the money value. In this case 10 bucks for 20 hours of gaming effort.

Would you work for 50 cents an hour?

This is the point.

If you consider achievement hunting to be work, why are you chasing achievements at all?

If you don’t like it, don’t do it. If you like it, who cares how long it takes.

I don’t consider them work. Although it does get to that when it start feeling like grinding.

What you completely missed, is the point that I was making. Congratulations on skipping the main message and misunderstanding a small part of it.

What I was talking about is value and how and why people assign value to things. It’s because they put effort or time into it.

Money is related to work. People get paid for doing work. So what happens when on the one hand you put effort in to achieve something and someone then puts a money value on it? It equates your efforts while gaming to a money value and therefore what you did to make that money.

If one hour of work gives you something that costs you 20 hours in game to do, there is the comparison. I compare it only to work because that’s how people generally make money.

Now, we all know the grind and RNG involved in fractals and legendaries and that is too much. That does feel like a job and there people aren’t necessarily having fun anymore. So yeh I never got involved in that. It’s not fun and the annoying thing is that I cannot get these trinkets doing the things I might like in this game.

Who cares how long it takes? Well, depends on your own sense of accomplishment but most people don’t want to wait years before they feel like they got that accomplishment and also at some point gear is required for content. So called content gating. It exists only for higher level fractals atm but it will get more.

It will be interesting to see how Anet is going to release more ways to get ascended gear, more ascended gear and content gating based on it, because in the wrong order it will kitten a lot more people off….and unnecessarily at that.

GW2 depth of combat discussion?

Gehenna.3625

I find it interesting that they came up with these synergy combo’s as they advertised that between players you could create these effects.

Of course, who cares about combos when 90% of the content is solo content or zerg content and there’s little strategy going on on that level. Then in dungeons where you do have a team, most people are too busy killing blossoms or dodging to really come to a synergy approach.

Sure, it’s possible if you really go out of your way but most people don’t bother from my experience.

The skill bar is too rigid. We have more skill slots than GW1 but less customisation. Fixed weapon sets and fixed slots on the utility side really don’t make me feel like I can do a lot. And some of the cooldowns are just way too long for a 10 slot skill bar. It makes you revert to auto attack way too often.

Traits are too simplistic and complicated at the same time. I can’t really get a good grasp of why certain things are in the trait lines they are and I can’t half the time or more really notice much of a difference when I change something. Except you know “mace damage +5%” and because you often have traits relating to two weapons in one tree, you are almost forced to use a certain combination of weapons or have traits that don’t really work in the build you want to make.

So I thought I wanted to make a clone build with my mesmer, using staff and gs. Well I can’t do that because I must have phantasms whether I like it or not. A simple example but it shows how concept thinking is hampered and lack of versatility itself is already enough to make it uninteresting.

The actual combat itself is pretty good, but gets boring because of the above reasons.

The lack of flexibility in skill choices, because of weapon skills and fixed slots is increased by the trait system’s failure to deliver more flavour and in fact makes it worse.

The trait system also has a poor UI and that doesn’t help either.

Massively: Where Guild Wars 2 Goes Wrong

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gehenna.3625

Gehenna.3625

This article puts down a few points that very much reflect my opinions on GW2.

GW2 is the first game with crafting where I didn’t do any crafting. It is messy and sluggish. Any other game I did crafting.

The roles are indeed not well-defined and there is no clarity on character builds and roles at all. I agree that it would’ve been better if there was more explanation from Anet on how these should work in game. The trait system is laughable to me because it just doesn’t really add anything exciting to the build etc.

Zones are there. I even think there are too many zones and that each zone doesn’t have enough leveling activities. I should be able to port to a zone and have events happening, pinging on the map, so I know where the action is. Not walking around trying to find an event, asking people if any events are up and no answer.

The story is totally how I feel about it. It’s not MY STORY. Not at all. This is the biggest disappointment of them all.

Of course people have different priorities but this was a big one for me. Also where GW2 actually breathed history and cohesion, GW2 doesn’t breathe the history and has no cohesion. It’s like different teams were designing different parts of the world and never talked to each other. The world looks amazing, but it doesn’t give a feeling of depth to it.

Its the difference between a top 40 hit and a classic song. I am sure plenty of people will love the latest Rihanna song, but I am more the Stairway to Heaven type of guy. Whereas GW1 gave something for both, it seems GW2 just went the top 40 way.

That’s why I think that GW2 will still be successful but it needs to keep scoring every month and that’s where the monthly events and content patches come in. Simply to keep people hyped and busy and not look too much deeper, because for me, and yes this is simply MY OPINION, the game lacks depth. It’s too contrived and superficial.

Discussion about the DR system - Merged thread

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gehenna.3625

Gehenna.3625

DR is linked to MF as well. I think MF should be removed from the game to begin with.

See, if MF increases the chance of finding higher quality and also increases the rate with which you hit DR (and this is what it seems to do), then it also means that if you have a higher chance, there still is the possibility that you get crappy drops (blues and greens) and still hit DR more quickly.

Then there is the general nerf on loot drops, which means decreasing the chance of good items dropping and you have a third issue.

So loot percentage is down, DR is strict and the loot percentage modifier MF increases the speed with which you hit DR.

I wonder how Anet can see this as a good idea. It just sounds like a bad combination of factors altogether. Why? Because in the end it means that you have people without MF who hardly get any rare or exotic drops and people with high MF who only get a few no matter how much effort either group of players puts in.

Then Anet says, well and for the good stuff you need 250 ectos. Good luck.

Bottom line is that if you follow this you need to do a little grind each day for 6 months. That’s too long for most people.

Solution: Go to Fractals and make cash so you can buy them off the TP or get gems to trade for gold to do the same.

Why is this game so focused around the TP? Trade is important yes, but it shouldn’t be the key element in a fantasy game.

16gScholar rune set equal to 6 Ruby orbs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gehenna.3625

Gehenna.3625

Both items prices are based on supply and demand. The price has nothing to do with how powerful of effective they are.

And demand isn’t based off how powerful and effective they are? /facepalm

Why would demand be based on that?

Analogy: consider the food value of peanut butter vs goose liver pate.

The cost in part reflects that Rune of Scholar is more sophisticated and erudite.

And mostly supply-side — that it’s expensive ingredients and only craftable by a minority of characters. Whereas Ruby orbs are farmed by bots.

It is dependent on that because effectiveness in game terms (stats) are valued. As they are assigned value people want them. So that influences demand.

Look at Fractals…people want the ascended items so they’re all there doing their RNG grind. Cause they want the better stats.

Your analogy totally fails, because you talk about luxury levels only. Food is a matter of taste. Better or more stats are not.

The OP’s mistake is in his assumption that nobody can maintain their health over 90% mostly. That is an assumption and depends a lot on player style. So there is a market for that.

However, it’s still about the stats and being as effective as possible in combat. Not just a matter of taste but about min/maxing.

But at least a lottery is called a lottery.

This game was not advertised as rng2win.

A rose by any other name is still the same.

But that isn’t the meaning of what is being said.

How is it not? He said that “atleast a lottery is called a lottery.”

Hence my quote.

Yes, when you play the lottery you know what to expect.

When you play GW2, apparently it’s not what I thought they advertised. I thought it wouldn’t be grindy and would be story driven because that’s what they said in the manifesto. This is not the game they advertised in my view. RNG as a major player in endgame gear progression, vertical or horizontal is not what I saw in the ads for this game, but here it is.

I don’t see being lucky in the fountain or spending a ton of cash in the TP as a legendary feat or achievement. Therefore even the name legendary weapon is incorrect.

I can understand the game not being what you expected, but that doesn’t change it from being what it what ever was. Everyone has different expectations and none of them are correct, not even the creators of the games’.

As for knowing what to expect when you play the lottery? No, you don’t. The lottery changes every time you play it due to the varying amount of people vieing for the pot; the odds are never static so you are never truly informed of what your odds are (beyond infinitesimally low).

Listen a lottery has a clear definition of what it is. You have to have lived in a cave for a long time not to have a clue what it is and what to expect from it. A lottery just works a certain way. The set up is done and you can have different set ups giving variation.

It’s clear however that it’s a game of chance and that it may cost you more money than you can gain. If you are lucky you might win something. It’s not an issue for debate.

But here we are in a game where we had max stat gear that was fairly easy to come by, known as exotics. Legendary weapons had exotic stats. This was the way the game was and it affects how people play the game.

In comes Fractals with centralised dungeon grind and a new tier of stats: Ascended. Legendary weapons will have these stats as well.

Now, here’s the difference. BiS was available to all without luck needed. Collect karma or tokens and there you are. It also had different options. The luck element was only for the legendary and well that was purely optional from a progression point of view.

Now we see RNG is a big factor in the ascended items in Fractals and people can do twenty+ runs without getting what they need. Legendaries will have ascended stats so there is now a progression need to get them. It’s all that is known at the moment.

Anet said more ascended gear is comin but when and what? Unknown. We can only deal with known quantities, the rest is speculation.

So here’s the difference. Whereas with a lottery the expectation is always that you need to be lucky to win and chances are you won’t…this is not what GW2 was but it is now for BiS gear.

If you do not get that difference … well, let’s hope you do.

Their “client” is any player with a wallet (all of them). They’re in it for the moolah, and doing what they can to make us pay them for their hard work (or lack thereof, etc). RNG sucks, but it does in RL too. I’ve never heard about people complaining that the odds of winning the lottery are too low, even though they constantly, consistently dump wads of cash into it and gain (often) nothing in return. Such is the roll of the dice.

But at least a lottery is called a lottery.

This game was not advertised as rng2win.

All games have random loot to some degree. Anet, just like NcSoft (see Aion for example) take it those steps further that makes a lot of people wonder what it is they bought.

DEs: have you REALLY done them all?

Well, some servers apparently suffer from population issues so you can’t do all DE’s. Some DE’s were or are bugged. Can’t do those either.

Do they count the WvW events in there as well? Also depends on your server.

I think it might be near impossible to have completed all of them, even if you could make the list.

Diminishing Returns and Grind.

These are the two terms that are closely related here. When you define grind as repetitious activities that you find undesirable but are required to do to progress, we can already see that there is a big element of opinion involved.

When does something become repetitive and when does it become undesirable? This depends on the person.

And what makes something required? There is the physical requirement that without infusions you will wipe in certain content, but there are also time elements and a personal sense of accomplishment that come into play. Because how quickly do you need to get gear? Will you be able to join parties if you do not have certain gear etc.

Diminishing Returns basically discourage people from repeating certain activities as the rewards go down as you continue to repeat them. But what if some people like to grind away? Why would you want to alienate them from your game?

And if grinding works and gives good rewards, why would you not reward other playstyles? Why not give quest rewards? Of course GW2 does do some of that, but not nearly enough. Why would there not be rewards of rare materials as part of completing the dungeon?

But no, grinding Orr was the thing, grinding Fractals is the thing to do. Why? Because of the rewards.

But it only rewards one type of gameplay. And if you don’t like this style of play (just running Fractals each evening) then it automatically becomes grind, because you have do something you don’t like to get somewhere (progression) and there are NO alternatives.

So, my statement here is that to avoid grind there most be equally rewarding alternatives. And with alternatives I mean activities in different play styles. Dungeons, exploring, questing, completing the world, WvW, etc.

This will allow people to pick their favourite activities and feel successful in the game. It will not feel grindy because you are not required to repeat a specific type of content to achieve this.

I completed all jump puzzles before Lost Shores. Reward? Nothing. So why care, you could ask….Well, the puzzles were fun and for me as a person with fear of heights they were quite a challenge to complete. But it doesn’t help my character progress. There are no special drops or rewards you can’t get elsewhere and there’s no title for it as far as I remember. Nothing to acknowledge a certain feat.

So, why then, would I ever do them again on another toon? I mean complete all of them. I already achieved it but it doesn’t progress my toon either horizontally or vertically.

Now, you may not care much about the puzzles, but why can you not progress to long term or endgame goals no matter what you are doing or where in the game and feel like you are really working towards a goal.

Why do people want to buy a legendary (if the price wasn’t too high)? What is legendary about a weapon that just took a lot of money and luck? They are not heirlooms or powerful artifacts created by the gods of old. They are crafting items and you need to get lucky at a fountain or spend lots of cash on the TP.

Is this truly a legendary achievement?

I think inflation comes from valuing something in a way that it’s actually not worth. It’s a false achievement. The only respect is the money side of it: It’s expensive.

So, why do DR and require grind at the same time? Why force people in the same area or Dungeon. Why make it so that people are forced to participate in a playstyle that they might not like, when you can reward other playstyles as well?

It doesn’t make much sense to me.

Silence is horrid... But my thoughts.

My first thought is to learn the difference between queue and cue.

Personally I have lost trust and it will take something to regain that. Silence is often seen as an admittance that something is wrong. But in the end Anet will do what they think works best. Those decisions have recently proven to lack a certain success.

For me it meant taking myself out of the game. We’ll see what the future brings is all I can say.

DR is just mechanic that makes it take longer to acquire certain items or materials. It makes it so that if you play evenings for example, you will only be able to get a few of these items no matter how much you farm.

I find daily/weekly quests much more honest in that. If they made dailies that reward certain materials rather than having to get them from random drops you can manage the speed with which people acquire items. These quests could for example require you to kill specific mob types and gather materials as requirements for these dailies.

This would ensure people going around the maps rather than sticking them in one dungeon. More daily achievements can enable this type of gameplay where people actually have a reason to go to lower level areas or anywhere else as the achievements require.

Much more can be done in that to bring the persistent world back to life, instead of just being a bunch of leveling zones.

So yes, I do say that if something’s not rewarding, people will stop doing it. That’s why they abandoned Orr, because aside from the original rewards, it wasn’t actually fun to begin with.

Which is exactly the point I want to make. Making Orr to be rewarding without being fun is only going to make people grind there – play without having fun until they find something more rewarding to do.

If Orr were fun, people would play there even without any kind of reward.

You asked me how I think ArenaNet should fix the game. Does that answer your question?

No, because “making it fun” doesn’t tell me what would make it fun.

Also, that is not really a fix. Because everything that is fun at first will become repetitious at some point and then it’s about progression. What the game needs is variation and more progression options that aren’t just about ectos and gold. Variety in activities and they all need to be fun and rewarding in various ways. The thing is that fun doesn’t stick over time so variety needs to be there.

But what’s the point in doing DEs if they are all very similar and the rewards are meh? That means there are too many events to begin with. People may scoff at questing but DEs and hearts aren’t much better in this way. I’ve had my fill of battling centaurs…oh and more centaurs.

The truth is that the game lacks variation because there is too much that is similar. Over 1500 dynamic events on launch they cried….yeh kill x centaurs, defend this outpost while killing centaurs, escort this merchant that gets attacked by centaurs.

Exciting stuff.

Now some events are quite good, but even those get repetitious after a while so there does need to be a level of reward to keep people coming back there. Or unique drops that only drop in some places or come from certain bosses, events etc. There simply is too little of that.

But no, saying it should be more fun doesn’t tell me anything. What is fun? You’ll see it’s different for different people and that’s why there needs to be more variation and a better distribution of rewards and more unique rewards.
