Did ANet block daily's list on Wiki?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Greener.6204

Someone, somehow, got it working last night.

There was an incredible amount of problem solving done by some very dedicated community members. I was going to list them all, but then I feared I’d miss one or two (especially as not all contributions are overt edits).

(side note: this is a great example how good and/or important changes can break good and/or important features)

Absolutely. And while the wiki is complex, it is no where near the complexity of the game! Take note all of you who claim that some updates should be “simple”.

Did ANet block daily's list on Wiki?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Anyone else not able to see the current dailies list on the wiki?

As was reported on reddit and on these forums, people are able to get credit for lowbie “hidden” dailies on max accounts – presumably a bug.

I went to the wiki to see the dailies and noticed the list is gone.

Did ANet block this?

Anet takes a very clear, hands-off approach to the wiki. Anet has also made the information on dailies publicly available for a long time. Go ahead and see for yourself .

The widgets on the wiki are not working after the update, so that article page cannot load the information properly.

The Economy: Draining the Liquid Gold

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Greener.6204

Greener.6204

Looking at an individual rather than the wide economy – pre HOT liquid gold was much easier to earn than after HoT,

Therefore to the individual it is becoming a scarcer item- although it may be being distributed out to more people (smaller amounts).

An individual’s purchasing power is what’s important in the grand scheme of things.
This has decreased if they personally are earning less gold overall and static cost items remain the same (commander pins etc).

If we’re going to take a myopic view of this gold situation, then let’s go to anecdotes.

I’ve played this game since it released. The money in my account barely got to ~230 gold before HoT. I never made money; never cared.

After HoT released, I managed to gather enough money to buy Zap off the TP (with a 100g gift from a friend), and craft Bolt. I then got myself back up to ~130g, saw the Dominator skins, and bought two. I then got myself back to 30g, and spent the rest yesterday on guild upgrades.

I have no idea where this money is coming from; frankly I don’t care. I’m making way more money now than ever before, and it’s not from selling mats. I hoard. I’m getting liquid gold.

It takes 40 events to get the 10 shiney baubels – doing 40 events takes significant time to get this return. You will certainly not be getting 3g/hr just doing events in liquid gold.

Yes, but that’s looking at individual accounts, and not all accounts. As a quick example:

100 players x (3g/hour from dungeons) = 1000 players x (1 shiny bauble/hour)

Obviously you can argue on the nuances of the ratios I just made up, but the basic arguments of wealth being spread out to more players, and the influx of total gold into economy staying the same, are rather reasonable.

What I would find more intriguing is trying to measure the effects of the baubles on the economy, as they are not offered every week (though yes, the wiki does need updating).
Teasing out all of the other effects on the economy, such as new content releases, etc. may be hard, but I wonder if we can see the prices of general goods rise/fall depending on if baubles are being given out on a particular week.

Bought it twice and it still isn’t there? Ouch!

Whenever I can’t find a recipe, I go through my “silly mistakes” checklist: Are all the crafting levels checked? Did I type anything by accident into the search bar? Is my Huntsman actually level 400? etc.

If you still cannot find the crafting recipe on your account, you can create a ticket with Support to see if they can help. If it is a bug, then they’ll also be made aware of it and can start to fix the problem for everyone.

PS: The Auric weapons are discoverable, so you won’t start with an Auric Axe in the crafting list.

Outfits trend... Are players happy about it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Greener.6204

Greener.6204

So I wanted to make a Poll, fast to click and choose for everyone, and see what it comes out from there.

Sadly, any information you get from your poll is going to be worthless You’re gathering data from a very small, non-representative subset of the GW2 players.

You’re polling the subset of players who:

  • Even bother going through the forums
    • Were interested enough or biased enough to take an interest in your title and read the topic
      • Had a decisive / divisive enough opinion to click on either of your links, thinking that online polling has value over exposition (though there would be overlap between the those who voted and those who wrote).
        • And with this super small subset you’re now left with, you’ll have to deal with the fact that those who think “negatively” towards something tend to vote more than those that think “positively” (yay human psychology).

I know you meant well in trying to put a poll out there and asking for people’s opinion. The latter is wonderful, but the former isn’t going to work out like you hope. Hence why you’re feeling confused here:

Well I guess we have some interesting result, I see many people answering the topic in a way that looks like in favour of Outfits, but then we have at the moment a clear % of where is going the most of the opinions.

Edited to add stress to the word wonderful, as illiciting quality feedback is always a good thing!

We already have this, though it involves a “/wiki [SHIFT+LEFT CLICK]”. If you happen to arrive at a page with no information, feel free to help the community out

How about every item gets 2 options to their right-click menue:

  • How do I get this?
  • What can I do with this?

We already have this via the above, Re: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Vial_of_Linseed_Oil .

We can’t rely on Anet to complete in-game tool-tips for every item or idea, especially as the game is always in flux and information would quickly become inaccurate. Anet would have to spend huge amounts of man power updating the in-game information instead of actually developing the game. Even the hordes of dedicated people that contribute to the wiki cannot keep up with some aspects of the game when it’s updated!

Get this thread into the more popular threads where the devs will be interested to take a look, that way they can see all of our wonderful or maybe not so wonderful ideas. This saves time for them and makes it easy for us, work with each other and build on one another’s potential ideals.

Placing all ideas into a single thread is exceedingly counter-productive. Not only does it make ideas hard for Anet to sift through and pass on to each other, but trying to follow any discussion on a single idea will be nearly impossible.

This won’t save time, won’t make it easy for anyone, and it won’t help us work with each other. Separate suggestions belong on separate threads for many good reasons.

In WvW, back when culling was a part of life, I led a new player on his first foray into the Borderlands.

We started from the SW spawn, and began running up the valley; I was probably a good 5 seconds ahead of him, typing some basic facts about the place. As we approached the end of the valley, I see our zerg materializing in front of us, running back towards the spawn point. It didn’t take a genius to know what invisible force was behind them, and in an instant I turned tail and joined the fleeing crowd.

Who should I pass by a moment later? The new player of course, happily typing away at his keyboard.

I stopped, turned my camera around, and watched in abject horror as he alone charged into an army which was only just beginning to appear on our screens. I don’t know when exactly he appeared on their screens, but when he did, the mob ate him alive.

I laughed. He never joined me in WvW again.

So... what IS the new drop rate of the keys?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Greener.6204

Greener.6204

If you want to find out the drop rate of an item (in this case, keys) you have to stop conflating play-time with rolls on the loot-tables. You can play for ages in Queensdale and get nothing, while someone plays in Orr for a short time and gets a lot better loot (for obvious reasons). To get the drop rate, you’re going to need a tremendous amount of data, which you’re probably never going to get your hands on.

First, you’ll have to document EVERY creature you kill. Since we don’t know the effects the creature’s level has on the rolls, you’ll have to document that too, along with its rarity, location, your character level (to see if down-leveling has an effect) and any other possible thing which may change the drop-rates. You’ll have to track each item you get, including money, as those are what represent the rolls on the loot-tables. (And remember, we’re not even sure how some of these loot-tables are structured!)

Second, you’ll need to recruit a lot of people to do this task. This item is quite rare, and you have to deal with cases where you get one right away, or you don’t get any at all (both of which are expected results). And I don’t mean a few people; A lot of people. You want to get as many drops tabulated as possible, and remember, the quality of the data is as important as the quantity.

Third, you’ll need to figure out the possible effects due to Magic Find and Power of the Mists. The latter changes over the course of the week. So contact your local statistician if you want to figure out how to nullify those effects, if present. It’s doable.

Forth, if you’ve done this data gathering well enough, you should be able to gather hints as to what the current precursor drop rate is, so do share!

Seems a little pointless and counter-intuitive to the nature of a wiki you can add to yourself. Can the article discussion pages not fulfil a feedback role?

As has been pointed out by others, editing the wiki can be extremely intimidating. Even after years of editing the original GW wiki, I found myself completely lost with the new style of organizing data.

The “article feedback” link will actually drop a person’s comments directly onto the discussion page (a page which can also confuse/intimidate users; wiki code can look strange). All actual feedback about the game happens on these forums, and the wiki won’t be fulfilling that role.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Greener.6204

Greener.6204

Note: The below contains quick numbers which can easily be modified to be more realistic, I just threw this together quickly in Excel on a break. I also have no reference for the value I assigned to ‘r’.

The RNG code of the Mystic Forge can be changed so that extreme outliers are less frequent.
Let r = 0.001% (1 in 100 000), the current chance of getting a precursor through the MF
Let n = number of previous failed attempts at getting a precursor through the MF. It resets to zero upon a success.
Let f = 1.1, the increase in chance of getting a precursor due to previous failures
Let P(r,n,f) = Current probability of your account getting a precursor through the MF

Using P=r*(f^n), ~79% of accounts will have received at least one precursor by the time they had done 100 trials at the MF. This is in contrast to the 0.1% of accounts that would have received at least one precursor by the 100 trial mark.

Again, the values above are just a sample, and yes, extreme outliers will still exist as they always will, but they will exist less frequently.

Edit: Quick drop of code from Excel. Cells delineated with commas. Had to add a space after “PRODUCT” so the forum would show the full code.
Chance of REWARD, 0.00100%
Increase odds upon failure ,1.1

Trial Number, Chance of REWARD, Failure %, Running Chance
0, =$B$1*($B$2^A5), =1-B5, =1-C5

[Suggestion] Prompting use of Food and Boosts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Greener.6204

Greener.6204

The problem(s):
One of the game-play mechanics that I consistently forget about is the use of the food or utilities I’ve made, and boosters I’ve collected. If I’m not using up these consumables, then I will neither be making nor buying more in the future. This lack of consumption will leave my bank full of items that I keep forgetting to use, and leaves money unspent that I could be giving to other players via the Trading Post (i.e. helping the gatherers, chefs, and other crafters of Tyria make money from their discipline).

Possible solution:
Icons help to remind me of my present state. When I have a buff on, the simple blue image of a wrench or an apple tells me that I have what I want. But when this icon goes away, I do not have a prompt to tell me what I’m lacking (i.e. no signage leads to little awareness). I may spend much of my game-play unbuffed, especially if I change characters partway through.

Maintaining a small greyed out icon above the skills 6 – 10, would tell me at a glance that something is not what it should be.

  • Having four such icons (Food, Utility, Enchanted Reward Boost, Enchanted Combat Boost) could cover the bases.
  • The icons can be clickable in the same way that the skills 6 – 10 are, letting you select which item from your backpack you want to consume (i.e. a small window will pop up containing icons that have their own detailed hover-over text)
  • These icons can float/move as you gain other stat changes, such as poison, bleeding, aegis etc. Since knowledge of these food buffs are least important while in a fight, they can float at the end of all the icons, or be positioned further out of the way. Only when the fight is over (no other icons present), does one need to be aware of them again.
  • The greyed icons can be gated, so as to be consistent with the New Player Experience. Food can still be consumed which will give a blue icon, but the grey icon does not need to replace the blue when the buff is over for a level 2 player.

Issues with implementation:
Right now, the players have a large set of boosts outside of food and utilities that they can use and stack at their pleasure. Some were amalgamated into two large sets (Enchanted Reward/Combat Boosts).

  • For my suggestion to be implemented in full, all separate boost items from these sets would have to automatically be turned into one of these conglomerate items. Any boost items such as speed, strength or karma would be changed in all character’s inventories and bank accounts. This step is currently being done at the players’ pleasure and expense.
  • Additionally, this would limit the number of boosts a character can apply, as they would have to choose only one option from each of the Reward and Combat lists. (Note that there are still many other buffs that are completely separate from these two categories, such as Birthday or Laureate Magic Find boosters, which will remain stackable).
