I like hammer with bull rush, bolas, and ’fear me’. Even without a hammer bull rush and bolas can do a ton of damage when combined with oh, say, hundred blades.

And fear me is fun for scaring folks away from someone while rezzing, or forcing them to grind their face into a wall while you do something big, damaging, and probably illegal in 90% of the world to their backside.

Dissallow players transferring servers to participate in WvW until match reset plz

I think it’s because ANet advertised free guesting to other servers. The guesting system currently isn’t working, so they are allowing free transfers as a temporary measure until it’s in. If they just made transfers paid without having guesting in there would be a lot of people very rightly cheesed off.

I do agree that the WvW lockout for server transfers should be in place though. No idea why it isn’t.

WvW team chat gives player location automatically.

Just a quick idea that might improve communication in WvW.

In Unreal Tournament 2004 the game often (with a properly made map) automatically gave the player’s location in chat.

Something like that could do well for WvW. There are many callouts that happen where the person has to very quickly call an incoming at their location. Sometimes they forget to add the detail of where they are. If the game simply added that after their name it would make it easier to tell where everybody is, and quicken any of those important incoming callouts. After all, if they are in a fight they have more important things to do then make sure they type ‘briar’ or ‘champions’.

If it ends up being too long, it looks like the names of the points can be pretty easily shortened to 2 or 3 letters and be unique to their zone. And those can be used instead.

Any thoughts, opinions, kittens or complaints?

I might have not worded that quite accurately. It’s still entirely possible to have one server full up at their 33.3% but still have other servers not using up their full allotment. So the spread could be 33.3% HoD 22% SBI 23% JQ Just no server can go over their total space of 33.3% of the server’s available player slots. I think that’s how night capping comes into play. A server can just not have enough players available in off hours that are interested in WvW to fill out their 33.3%

As for the zergs running around looking for doors, yea that could still happen, but hopefully the defenders would counter that by upgrading the towers to the reinforced door point. Then the zerg is just running around wasting their time leaving their side shorthanded elsewhere.

Like big masses of groups in the jumping puzzles. Eventually you just leave it alone for awhile and let the big mass of players accomplish nothing leaving their side shorthanded. A zerg running around looking for wood doors that don’t exist are mostly just wasting their time overpowering camps, when they could have been doing something more constructive.

Though I guess in that case we would need to be able to build a better door immediately, instead of having to wait for walls first.

Sounds reasonable. Though I figure a non reinforced door should still be damageable by players. A little more incentive for the upgrade.

Though the way I understand it, isn’t there already a population cap? I don’t recall the numbers off the top of my head but I recall it mentioned some time ago that WvW has the populations split 33.3% and reserved for their respective servers on a map by map basis. So that a particular server would never have more than 1/3rd of the population of the map max capacity of the map.

Agreed, 3 way battles sometimes roll this way.

I’ll prefer hitting HoD if it comes to an even decision as it stands, but if I just took Orgath and had a wave of ogres heading south I’m still going to help those ’minions’ push and take the SBI camp.

If SBI knows we’re mostly in SM and knows that we just kicked HoD out of SM, it makes more sense to hit us because they know where we are instead of HoD who could be almost anywhere.

equipment skins for crafters

Just a minor thought for crafting.

I got up to 400 weaponsmithing finally and made myself an oricalc greatsword. And while the 400 greatsword looks impressive, I have personally been more partial to the more realistic looking weapons. And it ended up being a bit of a disappointment to me.

It got me thinking, what about if we could purchase a sort of blueprint from the vendors that sell some of the unique equipment skins. For example, The_Ebon vanguard cultural vendors, as well as selling the equipment itself also sell blueprints that can be added to a regular recipe to skin the resulting item to match their style.

There could even be a couple more generic relatively cheap blueprints sold by the general master crafters, to give even the basic gear a more varied look, such as sword crafting having a gladius model, or a scimitar model, or a katana, just for some more variety.

I figure these blueprints should be comparable in price to the actual gear and the resultant gear should probably be account bound depending on the blueprint to keep the exclusivity of the rarer looks. But maybe sell a stack of 10 or so at a time at that price so that the crafter isn’t forced to only use it on their lv 80 gear. It could even just be more along the lines of a copyright license, giving the crafter the right to recreate a limited number of the works for the up front ’fee’.

Currently a transmute stone can be used, but it just strikes me as odd that a crafter can’t have any say on what the stuff they make actually looks like and it has to be modified after the fact.

As usual, any thoughts, insights, kittens or observations?

Edit: The_Ebon Vanguard is censored? weird.

New Player: New to WvW

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Greiger.7092

Greiger.7092

A couple things for general WvW that isn’t so class based that it would probably help to know, and get less people yelling at you.
---
1. Avoid taking supply from keeps or towers. Take from a camp when possible

Why?: Keeps and towers can be upgraded. However in order to be upgraded they need supply to be in their depots. And they either use it instantly (most upgrades that involve personnel) or slowly (upgraded walls, defenses). If there is no supply, those upgrades grind to a halt. Camps have similar upgrades, but they tend to cost less supply, and supply camps get their supply faster.

Exceptions are fully upgraded keeps or towers (even then try to keep half the max there for an emergency) and during an active attack on the location when there is either no upgrade queued, or the upgrade has no chance to finish in time.
---
2 Call out an incoming or inc if you spot a large group of enemies. With their location and likely target or direction of travel, and if possible an estimate to their numbers.

Why?: Defenders want to know they are about to be attacked so they can stop what they are doing to man siege engines. It can also help redirect nearby players to help with the defense, or book it out of there to take it back after the group has left as appropriate.
---
3. Always carry supply.

Why?: You need a siege engine to take anything bigger than a camp, and they all need supply. And if defending 10 supply is 1/3rd of an arrow cart, or a couple more hits on a door with a battering ram. Carrying some siege blueprints for a ram or arrow cart is also helpful, but can get a tad expensive if you use them all the time.
---
4. Try to avoid attacking stonemist unless told to.

Why?: Stonemist takes a lot of time to break into, and even well organized large groups can be repelled without too much trouble. A good attack on stonemist usually involves depriving it of supply while hitting walls with long range treb artillery. More often than not a group assaulting a stonemist gate could be put to better effect elsewhere.

Exceptions are when there is a organized assault. Even with a wall down you still need to overcome the inner wall, and then the deathtrap of the lord’s room. An organized attack can do that. Also right after a reset stonemist can be practically undefended, allowing for the quick to get in and capture it for their team, but know that the other sides will be trying to do that too.

I figure it would have been better if they just drastically reduced the drop rate of those guys, but if that ended up being more complicated to do than it seems, this is probably just a stopgap. Last I checked a number of MMOs (and RPGs in general) don’t give any loot xp gold or anything for killing summoned mobs. At least ANet tries to.

Also the Tier 3 armor. From what I see so far the relevant armor class’s armor for T3 is just that race’s hero’s armor. I really figure that should be a different set altogether.

I’m a lv 80 Charr Warrior. I am not Brimstone. I like him, and I have a figurine of him sitting in my living room, but I certainly don’t want my character to just be a red furred Rytlock

It does seem a bit odd though when a ranger with a longbow in the grass can hit a warrior with a longbow on a wall, but the warrior is out of range when he tries to fire back.

Sure the ranger is a better shot I guess, but shouldn’t the guy on the wall make up for it with better height? Currently high ground is meaningless for anything but catapults and trebs.

Maybe instead of increasing range for high ground maybe reduce the guy on the low ground’s range or damage? You can’t fire a projectile as far to a higher target as a level one, and even then the projectile would have less energy when it gets there because it was expended fighting gravity.

A reasonable idea. Reinforcing a keep with siege is a hell of a lot easier when I can just use the keep’s waypoint to get back once I got the supply. And it feels a little cheap to do so.

Mobility is a useful tool in WvW, and being able to warp to a waypoint at practically any time seems to be a bit over-strong in the mobility area. There could be a horde of enemies between you and your keep, but as long as they haven’t started attacking your keep yet you can bypass the army with a quick warp bringing your supply with you.

And then there’s the waypoint escape method. If you are far behind enemy lines wrecking dolyaks and guards and you see some righteous fury coming over the hill at you, you really should not be able to just warp out of there before they reach you. It has potential to even more ridiculous with organized group on comms.

A quick RTB call and a sizable force just vanished into the wind to keep harassing camps and towers. A lot of action movies would have been a lot diffrent if soldiers behind enemy lines could just WP to safety. "Alright Private Ryan, we were told to come get you and bring you home. WP to omaha beach now soldier, that’s an order."

Not so much that I doubt you Runeblade, but do you have the source on that? It sounds interesting, makes me wonder what caused it to start happening.

While the keeps and towers might not be designed to treb other locations I would guess that Stonemist is practically designed around it. Those extensions of the 3rd floor going out from the middle? If those aren’t made for treb bombardment I don’t know what is. But that could be a designed in advantage to stonemist. Just because they don’t intend garrison to be able to treb bay, doesn’t necessarily mean SM isn’t meant to treb the nearby towers.

It’s not like you can’t do anything else while you are in the queue, go get some gold, or wander around a zone enjoying the scenery. It is surprisingly entertaining to just plop yourself down in a zone and just wander around, actually taking the time to kill the wildlife and do DEs as they happen.

So recently in WvW I was running over to rez a downed player and saw a small pvp fight happening a short distance away on a road guard spot. The fight was a 1v1 one defender, one invader, so I bypassed the defeated player to assist in the fight. I felt it was better to defend the objective and defeat the invader than spend 20 seconds rezzing somebody from 0%

Somebody else rezzed the defeated player during the fight and the defeated player Called me a kitten for not rezzing him, and set me to ignore before I could send a response.

So what’s the proper response to that situation? Rez the player even though it could mean the live player is defeated instead? Or rush past the defeated player to defeat the enemy and hold the point to rez the player after?

Oh man.. I did the same thing in my first WvW match…

We just raided a keep and got swarmed pretty fast. I saw a mesmer and guardian lock onto me, so I ran as fast as my little booty would take me. Get to a cliff, look down and said to myself ‘Better to take myself out than let them get me’… I plummeted to my death, and just before I went to rez… BLAM.. here come my two enemies right beside me. xD

As for myself, there’s a lotof things that I love about this game, but I think the one thing I find most fun.. is the lack of ‘invisible walls’. I often find myself climbing onto ANYTHING that I can. Finding hidden ways up the sideof a mountain, or exploring Divinity’s Reach via rooftop travel. (I’ve died a lot trying that!)

I also like how much control you have while jumping. I often find myself practicing my jumping skills. Hard to get vistas, jumping puzzles, whatever.. I have a knack for doing it as fast as possible, even if I die a few times trying. It’s tons of fun.

I love that, and it’s one of the reasons I have the death from above trait that has warriors take 1/2 fall damage.

I jump off a cliff, they see I lived and jump off too. They go splat and I dance on their corpses.

Players give WvW guards equipment

Posted by: Greiger.7092

Greiger.7092

The dying is a good idea, even if it was just some way to tint certain parts of the texture. I’m sure a lot of guilds out there would like their guards wearing guild colors.

And I agree with the no drop. I never intended them to drop that gear, once it’s on a guard it’s ‘gone’ no way to retrieve it, even on death of the guard.

I figured the guards losing their gear on death might be a bit harsh. If they lost the gear on death instead of just when their location was taken, it would seem giving the guards in front of tower gates anything would be useless. One or two people not even intending to attack the tower can easily kill those two guards. Let alone what happens to the poor saps during an actual attack. I feel that guards only losing the gear on point capture seems a bit more reasonable. Otherwise I see folks only giving anything to lords and their bodyguards and nothing else.

As for the guild only giving gear to their guards it makes sense, but on Jade Quarry I see towers that get claimed by some guild or another that never get touched or upgraded in any way, and it would allow the unlikely possibility of a cross server guild claming a tower only to keep others from giving anything to the guards.

Perhaps a threshold would help with that, only guildies being able to replace a lv 80 peice of gear, but anyone able to upgrade according to normal rules as long as the gear the guard is holding is not max level. Still allows lower level folks with lower level crafts to help out, but a guild that cares enough to give their guys gear with lv 80 stats won’t get their stuff replaced with slightly better gear with less ideal stats.

Right now crafted items are usually next to worthless. There are far more people producing them than want them.

How bout if we could give NPCs in WvW a piece of equipment? Talk to a guard or other non legendary npc and you can give them a single piece of equipment (that matches their class of course) to give them the equipment’s stat buffs.

Level, damage, or armor value does not matter, they will always use their own values for those, to keep all gear regardless of level better than nothing, but they will still gain the stat buffs on the equipment, and if viable, the slot in effects.

The NPCs only take items that are better than what they are holding (nobody running around giving guards lv 1 equipment when they are holding lv 80) and the items cannot be recovered once given. A new piece of equipment just overwrites the old. The guards will keep the equipment across death and respawn, but if their spawn point is lost (like if an enemy takes the tower the guard is defending) the item is lost.

Magic find will give the guard a small chance of slightly upgrading their own gear at random when they kill something.

Items such as food can be given to the quartermaster and the quartermaster will distribute the food to the stationed guards until it runs out of stacks.

In theory this may cause guilds to buy up cheap crafted gear on the market to give a cheap buff to wvw guards. Higher level gear would likely still sell more often, but it should make the price of finished goods a little better overall.

WoW was fun when I was leveling, seeing the zones, doing the quests, and most of all not having to care about having a super ideal trait line. Of course this was before WoW decided that only their endgame should matter and trivialized everything below level 80.

Once I got to endgame it was all BiS gear, one set of ideal traits for a spec (what? you are a cat druid that wants to be able to get 3% more crit instead of having Blood in the water? Noob GTFO!)

I like that in GW2 you are not just focusing one or two stats all the time. There are no completely irrelevant stats. In wow a cat druid could be stacking all kinds of intelligence, and all it does is mean that they get beat down by somebody three quarters their level because intelligence is completely meaningless to that spec.

While in GW2 a warrior can still use healing, a mesmer can still use toughness, a ranger still needs power. The stats don’t arbitrarily change what they do based on what class you are.

If I need to temporarily have dungeons that don’t quite have as complicated boss fights to enjoy all stats being meaningful, so be it.

The PvE content is part of WvW, Thats the way it was designed. Mobs around towers give tower defenders something to do other than sit on top of the tower idle. They are still close enough to get in the tower and on siege if an assault comes if they are paying any attention at all.

The Jumping puzzles are a source of free blueprints. Not everybody spends hours grinding gold to afford that kind of stuff, and real defenders (the people who usually need things like arrow carts) don’t get badges of honor reinforcing towers like the hit and run groups do. I defend ogrewatch more often than not on JQ. Those defenses that were there around 12 noon eastern us time today? I built them, every one of them, myself, because nobody else on JQ cares to defend a tower. From the tower upgrades to the ballista to the arrow carts, if it wasn’t for those free blueprints I would have been broke long ago.

Camping the jumping puzzle is a viable strat, but we don’t need more than 3 people with an arrow cart doing it, more is ridiculous. Maybe people would be happier if ANet just put a population cap on the puzzle? Put a queue on it, limit it to something like 10 per team, like everything else.
