What makes a good Commander?

Don’t tell people to leave a map to go to another map unless the map they are leaving is in good shape. Telling people to leave a map because we don’t have any points is stupid, the map needs more help, not less. Especially when the map they are telling folks to go to has a queue.

Don’t demand that the entire server join your zerg, and completely ignore defense and then go zooming around the enemy’s backfield capping towers and camps. The opposing team can take that stuff back with 1/4th the numbers you used to take it once you left.

Don’t take something if you don’t plan on holding it for at least one score tick. I’ve seen commanders take stonemist... STONEMIST and then immediately order their server to abandon it and let the enemy take it back, losing it before a tick even happened. Claiming that their grand plan is to make them waste their money upgrading it. Completely ignoring how much it cost in siege and repair bills to take it.

If your server has a voice chat, use it. But make sure you, or somebody else, is always transcribing important information into chat.

If you are taking a lot of flak in chat, and people are making very good arguments against you. Maybe you should trade places with a commander in another map. Don’t start calling them trolls, or idiots. One or two you can ignore, when its a large number of people, you have a problem.

Also try to keep a trustworthy spotter or two in strategic locations and listen when they call something out. Not just when it’s on top of an objective. If somebody spots 15 invaders on a road between X and Y those invaders are going somewhere. Don’t ignore it just because they aren’t in a keep or tower.

Here I’ll do it for you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cS35PyIZdY There’s the mad king showing up. Anybody who missed the one time event now missed nothing.

Actually I think that’s better than my experience of it, I think half the sounds bugged out on me when I saw it.

I’ve always been partial to the adventurers either got lucky in a promotional lottery or purchased an expensive lightweight asuran device that allows an adventurer to remotely access the waypoint network from anyplace.

They keep it on them at all times, and they can just enter in the waypoint they want and insert correct change into the device (that gets teleported to the asuran WP management HQ) and they teleport to the desired point.

However for security reasons these devices need to be registered with a waypoint in order to access it. And unfortunately the devices can currently only be registered from short range.

I would not be opposed to this. Though it should also say for how long it was claimed. Some smaller guilds (like the one I’m in) are happy to claim a tower or supply camp and activate our buffs, but we don’t have the influence income or the coverage to keep a buff up 24/7. I would hate it if we started getting called out for having a claimed tower that just happened to outlive our buff duration, and noone was online to unclaim when a guild with some active buffs came by.

The discount for guild claimers though might backfire. Some more shortsighted people may claim the object with their personal guild to get a discount on the first upgrade without having any buffs whatsoever, and then forget about it or leave.

*Dodging. A sword ranger essentially has 2 extra dodges.
*Ranger warhorn is better (in my opinion)
*The ranger pet allows a ranger to continue to contribute even when knocked down or otherwise cc’d
*Ranger pet allows a ranger to engage multiple targets out of traditional AoE range
*Ranger pets also have a very wide range of abilities, with a diffrent effect for just about every pet, from AoE fears, to AoE Regen
*Ranger spirit of renewal is capable of rallying everyone around not just once but twice (3 times with traits) per cooldown, as well as making a skill based self rally possible (the spirit has a short cast time on it’s rez, activate it right before you go down and it will rez you as well)

Yea love what ANet is doing. I might just not be looking in the right places but I haven’t seen a bot on Jade Quarry in days.

And while I’m sure some are still around, smarter bot AI, and constant human monitoring cuts into their bottom line, and reduces how many bots there are thanks to fewer botting outfits having the resources required. Bots becoming less profitable makes me a very happy person.

Thanks ArenaNet!

Not running back does seem like a kitten move. Its simple etiquette. As others said even if by the time you got back the fight would be over, what if folks missed their dodges or somebody got DC’d or something? Even with people doing things perfectly all that time somebody could make a mistake that ends up dominoing. In that case running back could have helped the situation. 75% is plenty of room for someone to make a mistake like that. if it was 10% or 20% it would be different.

While I wouldn’t necessarily kick you, I would certainly have a lowered opinion of you. As for the no warning, have you ever tried to type something out in the middle of a boss fight? With you refusing to run, they were down one, somebody stopping to type could have caused them to be down two.

Everybody did a little wrong, they probably should not have kicked you (unless you did that kind of thing repeatedly), and you should have shown a little more effort.

So far the Charr who’s name starts with a T who loves apples in the Order of Whispers is a close 2nd though. "How do humans walk without a tail?" I do think it was a little odd that his idea of a pirate disguise for my female charr was a loose vest and and her underwear though.

Asura gates are powered by a mystical energy from deep within the world, as the asura gates use it up the planet becomes less dense, and has less gravity. This technology eventually develops into safe power and a large city is made using the benefits of this cheap and efficient power.

But then a small group of rebels finds out where these things are getting their power and start blowing them up to save the planet. Shenanigans happen and it all ends up with some crazy long haired maybe-but-not-quite-dead nut with a sword summoning a meteor to add more density to the planet (and somehow become a god) the meteor takes a really really long time to strike the planet because of the lack of gravity. The evil sword guy hangs out in a crater in the Far Shiverpeaks like a Wiley boss, gets himself killed. And then the world is saved...maybe...who the kitten knows.

What siege would you like to see next?

in WvW

Posted by: Greiger.7092

Greiger.7092

Siege devourers. Like a slightly cheaper golem.

Players build a big thumper device that calls up a siege devourer. A player then can grab a ’leash’ object from the thumper once the big bug is summoned. The player holding the leash cannot attack or use any abilities but the devourer follows them, attacking any hostiles or damageable constructions near the leash holder (including wild mobs). The person who placed the thumper can take the leash from whoever is holding it by either walking up to that person and hitting ’use’ or going back to the thumper to get a new leash (when that happens the devourer digs to the new owner).

Whoever is holding the leash can plant it down on the ground allowing the leash holder to attack as normal. The devourer will attack anything in the area, and the leash cannot be picked up again until the devourer has no targets in aggro range. The leash holder can also throw the leash at a construction (not players or mobs) and the devourer will attack that target above all others, again the leash will not be retrievable until the designated target is destroyed. If necessary the devourer can burrow past walls to reach their target to prevent it being held up by getting forced to target something it can’t easily reach.

If the devourer is killed the leash and thumper are destroyed. If the thumper is destroyed the devourer leaves. Forcing the users to leave a force behind to defend the thumper. And allow teams that spot the thumper under construction the chance to hit that, instead of the massed zerg likely accompanying the devourer.

In theory this would give a cheaper but less controllable(the creature ultimately has it’s own AI) and slower to travel (all those mobs between sites) alternative to a siege golem.

Second idea:
Packheart upgrade for supply camps, replacing the dolyak with a Silvari packheart more capable of defending itself. Like a second caravan guard upgrade.

Sword seems to work pretty good 1v1 against thieves.

I’m not even 80 yet on my ranger and I can hold my own against them. They escape as often as not, but in 5 thief encounters in recent memory on my Ranger 1v1 in WvW only one has resulted in me dying. All those free evades you get with a sword can do a number on a thief’s initiative, and they don’t get the free reflect hits that a daggerstorming thief can get before you stop your bow autoattack.

Character Collision / Body Blocking

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Greiger.7092

Greiger.7092

Could make it so that only enemies body block. It’s relatively common in strategy games to allow a character to move through their allies as its assumed they are letting them past, but not enemies.

It also already happens somewhat for people with melee assist on. If you have melee assist on you can’t move through your target without dodging through. But in melee assist’s case it’s almost certainly clientside, and something integral like that being handled clientside is just asking for it to be hacked. So it would have to be moved serverside, which would overload the already heavily loaded servers.

I think it’s a good idea on paper, it has potential to add a bit more depth to combat, but currently wouldn’t work.

I agree with mungral. In sPvP I play a tanky melee support ranger, works great. Something like a 2 to 1 win loss ratio.

In PvE that ranger isn’t even 80 yet and I still have plenty of support options. Healing spring is awesome, I can plant down spirits in out of the way places where they won’t get AoE’d and still provide support, including the renewal spirit that saved from a wipe on numerous occasions, I have a trait that gives a constant passive precision buff to everyone around me, and my pet will often take the attention of a melee mob, giving time for them to get healed back up and get back into the fray. If I don’t just jump into melee myself and dance around the enemy with a sword and watch the mob miss all their attacks thanks to all the moves that give me evade during them. A sword ranger essentially has 4 dodges while everyone else has 2.

Rangers can support, and rangers can tank in a pinch, they just need to be done a little differently. Don’t put your spirits in the middle of the group against AoE, and ranger tanking is a little timed evading, a little kiting, and a little petwork.

What makes them float?

in Lore

Posted by: Greiger.7092

Greiger.7092

My guess is a much lighter than air ore in the rocks.

The ore isn’t everywhere, and it’s not in all the rocks in the region it does appear in, just like real ore in reality. Just because a place is known to have gold doesn’t mean every rock you dig up will contain gold. But the ground that does contain this lighter than air ore has these floating rocks around.

Some of them contained too much and flew off into the sky to be pushed around by high winds and eventually were worn to nothing by wind erosion. (Airship hazard?) Some do not contain enough ore to float. These would appear like any normal stone, just be a bit lighter if someone tried to lift them. And some have just enough of the ore to effectively maintain their height. Possibly with the aid of the local intelligent races who may see some benefit to keeping it where it is or perhaps the ore reacts in some way to variances in air pressure, allowing stones that don’t have an overwhelming surplus or shortage of the materiel to keep their height.

Asura being an underground race, likely know all about this materiel. Allowing them to use it directly in their floating constructions or they can smelt it down to a more pure form allowing them to use small amounts of it to levitate large structures like Rata Sum. It’s probably something the statics college works with a lot.

Name Your Character build

I call my ranger Ramtak a Spirit hunter build in sPvP

Sword and warhorn as primary, shortbow as secondary.

Using amulet and jewel of the soldier, runes of earth. Very tanky, sword moves keep me evading much of the time as well.

Skills are all spirits, sun, earth, frost, and renewal as the elite. And the AoE heal for a healing move. The spirits are traited to follow me around, pet is a hyena and bear, shark and jellyfish in the water.

Traits are 20,0,20,30,0
Marksmanship: Beastmaster’s bond, Spotter (Spotter helps support)

Wilderness Survival: Shared anguish, Hide in plain sight (Work great for finishes "Oh you interrupted me while I’m finishing? Sorry I’m now invisible, and that hammer you threw at me sent my pet across the room, not me, yer still toast")

Nature Magic: Vigorous Spirits, Nature’s Vengeance, Spirits unbound (Twice spirit health, Spirits use their abilities when they die or their time runs out, and spirits are mobile)

Seems to work great. I planned it as more of a support build, but it seems to 1v1 pretty decently. Maybe folks just aren’t used to a melee hunter, or are intimidated by a wall of red text bearing down on them. And if I activate the elite spirit’s ability right before I go down, I’ll rally myself. I’ve been called a hacker a couple times when folks couldn’t figure out how I did it.

Is queen jennah holding back her true power?

in Lore

Posted by: Greiger.7092

Greiger.7092

I agree. Jennah is holding back. She probably could have slaughtered all the separatists, and perhaps the residents of Tyria would be happy about it.

But what about Ebonhawke?

It strikes me that much of Ebonhawke is sympathetic to the separatist cause, but think they are misguided or feel that coming under the rule of a krytan queen and making peace with the Charr is just an unfortunate necessity for their continued survival.

Then that krytan queen slaughters a house full of separatists(Ebonhawke citizens as the separatists could spin it) by herself at a party. That’s going to put a strain on public opinion in the Ebonhawke area. Might even get a large chunk of the population on the fence to side more openly with the separatists.

After all the only ones who would know exactly how it all went down is a charr, a high ranking Krytan official, a high ranking Seraph, a drunk norn, and 6 adventurers counting Zouja that at best, are humans from kryta.

That’s part of domination mode, cap point mode, conquest, whatever you call it. Part of it is defending a point. So far from what I’ve been seeing most of the points get a good chunk of action, with maybe the exception of ruins, which is harder to take once your opponent owns it.

I’m sure Arenanet will add more game modes eventually. I mean capture the flag is a mode a lot of people seem to ask for, but it probably isn’t easy to balance.

Thieves alone for an example of potential trouble. Make them drop the flag on stealth like most games? Well that removes a big chunk of their utility. Also, if rangers have an automatic stealth trait, I’ll bet thieves do. That would make that trait actively detrimental if it makes them drop the flag whenever it triggers. But you can’t exactly let them stay stealthed with the flag either. All kinds of issues come up, which take time to work out.

Lets talk about that GW2 Article on Gamespy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Greiger.7092

Greiger.7092

The author’s main point, the botters does indeed still seem to be growing strong. But there was a comment in the article that makes sense that there is a due process, and that these botters often manage to make 3 accounts (with stolen cards) in the time it takes for them to kill one.

To deal with the botters I’m thinking ANet needs to take a more extreme measures.

Put moderators ingame. Either players that can be trusted, or the employees that already play the game (note that many take their arenanet tag off to not be bothered). Give them the ability to either outright ban a player, or make reports that go to the top of the report queue. While otherwise being normal players.

I have played MUDs where that kind of setup worked wonders, a mini-mod could enter a room, see some mechanic or another being exploited and issue a temp or permanent ban right then and there. It worked great even when the offender could just change their IP to circumvent it, imagine if they had to shell out $60 every time. Due process is good in a general sense, but there are times when it just gets in the way. These bots aren’t even trying to hide from the ’law’, we need a few Judge Dredds around to skip a few steps in due process.

---
The author also mentions racism though. I saw a bit of that back in the beginning, but it was only on the level that still permeates WoW to this day. And I haven’t seen anything I recognized as being racist since then. That harsh wave of bans near the beginning that everyone freaked out about was a godsend.

summary: Botting is a problem, bigotry is pretty much gone or very subdued. Arena Net can ban who they want when they want and everyone playing has agreed to that. We need Judge Dredd.

Not to mention the possible use of the speed buff before using it which makes the entire thing go off before some people can even react.

Making 100b mobile, whether the OP intends it or not, will turn it into an I win button on many builds.

You can’t use them because they don’t want anybody to have an unfair advantage in sPvP. A higher level character has access to more lv 80 equipment options than a lv 20. It’s one of the reasons I love this game’s sPvP. It’s not the usual mess of only half the fights ever being even remotely fair because here everyone has free access to the same equipment options.

I would be all for automatically having the PvP versions of the equipment skins you have in PvE though. No harm in that.

WoW 85 (yes I last played cataclysm donno what it is for pandas) was...

1. "Yay I’m 85" Choose a spec. Look up the exact traits you are supposed to have for that spec. If you do not have thise traits identical, you fail and need to respec. From this point forward it’s ideal traits or GTFO.
2. Start grinding special harder heroic mode dungeons* that you can only do once per day.
3. Get the best gear you can possibly get for your spec through heroic dungeons.
4. Get a guild. (Or not as optimally advertise you are looking for a raid, where you will be filling in for missing members for a guild, in that case you have to trust that they will distribute loot fairly. Many do not.)
5. Do 10 or 25 man raids, which are big super dungeons that take 2 hours straight to complete on a good run much longer on bad. They can only be done once per week. Study the raid before attempting, perfection is expected, especially from a non-guildie,
6. Do those enough times to get the best gear available for your spec. If 2 people wanted an item that dropped only one person could get it. (as a feral druid I averaged one piece every 2 runs)
7. With best raid gear available do heroic raids, which like dungeons are bigger harder versions of raids. Also on one week lockout.
8. Repeat step 6 for heroic raids
9. Have best gear available, complain about how WoW endgame sucks.
10. Another content patch or expansion comes out. Repeat steps 1-10.

*Difficulty equal to current GW2 story mode dungeons.

GW2 does not need oPvP.

Open PvP here would quickly devolve into ranged classes camping level adjustment spots. You know that spot in frostgorge south of earthshake waypoint that has a bunch of lv 80 drakes but you get leveled down to 74? Imagine going through there with an elementalist or ranger camping on the level adjustment line instead of just some easily evaded drakes.

Or parties will become a necessity, with groups of 4 or 5 running over anybody they see.

Open world PvP is and always will be, this system included, a completely one sided gankfest, with one side not having any hope of defending themselves from attack. In games with no level restrictions in zones it’s a max level in PvP gear running around in a level 20 area goomba stomping everyone they see and being proud of their victory. Here it would be guilds running around flattening anybody who dosn’t spend 10 minutes putting together a pug before going out and stomping moa. (And the gankers will still kick their kitten because chances are they have the advantage of voice comms.)

Maybe if there were more mystic fountains. Theres one at the beginning, theres one before the rolling boulders, and I think there’s one someplace after the arena (I vaguely recall one during beta don’t remember where though). Maybe they should put another one someplace near the end of the dark room, giving folks who can navigate the last few dark room jumps without a torch the ability to stealth through the deathtrap that is the arena.

I’m usually pretty easygoing when it comes to devs working on bugs, but I thought patches were supposed to be tested for a week before implementation.
Nobody noticed the loading issue during the testing period? Really?

And what about the bug not being resolved yet. Is it fixed and you are just doing another week long testing period for the fix? Or is "It got worse after last patch" and "It happens often enough that a programmer can just play the game with their client in debug mode and hit it pretty easily" not enough to figure out what went wrong?

I like you guys, I really do, and I try to be reasonable with the decisions I don’t fully agree with. But you do realize this looks really really bad right? tPvP is unplayable, I don’t see why anyone would shell out a ticket for a game that won’t stay even past the 5 minute mark. SPvP is only playable if you don’t mind the 50-50 chance you can actually finish a match. Even if you are only doing it for fun instead of any kind of rewards, I don’t find it fun to be arbitrarily kicked out of a game halfway through. I don’t think others do either.

Please get it together guys, nice to see this is given priority. But it seems a bit odd that this is either a hard problem to track down, or built so deep into the code to be difficult to work out.

I agree that is crazy. As a warrior I used to hear all this "oh no 100b is so OP nerf it please" Because I had to hit with a stun of some kind, either a long cooldown bulls rush or a easily dodged bolas to use it effectively.

Now I see thieves come along and if that video is any indication, if you don’t use your clairvoyance to dodge their instant ranged opener the moment they use it, you are paralyzed, backstabbed and dead. He’s in that video consistently hitting for more than my 100b does with a full combo in a quarter of the time.

I’m a relatively tanky warrior, and adding up the average damage he did in that few seconds I wouldn’t be down, but the fight would certainly be over and in the thief’s favor.

Whirling blades is simple enough to deal with. Walk up (preferably dodge up) to them and hit them with a sword, it dosn’t do any more damage in melee then at range, and somebody not panicking the moment they use that seems to be a really good way to get the thief to panic instead.

The problem as others said is the rendering. Ambush by a glass cannon thief in WvW? It’s death.

1 to 2 seconds for the kitten thief to actually render and become target-able after their stealth drops, 0.3 seconds average human reaction time. Anything that’s not built defensive as all hell, is either dead or took so much damage for the fight to already be decided. Most of thief OP is from the rendering bug and the thieves are happily using that bug to it’s full potential.

Mesmers portaling in (when they don’t do the stuff that lets them bypass gates without them having been down) is fine because the defenders can get to that mesmer and kill them to shut it down.

Somebody using a teleport gun to bypass the wall in mass is an exploit because the defenders can’t do something about it. You found an exploit and used it to full effect, congratulations. Don’t whine and moan when they disable it.

It may just be like some buisness setups, where everyone that has server access has to change their password every 90 days. Except in this case it just suggests you do so and doesn’t force the matter.

Though I imagine if that was the case there would be a lot more people seeing it.

Pretty sure theres nothing even the folks on the side of the person hacking away the orb can do to stop them.

Just because one or two people hack the orb away for a server doesn’t mean that server’s happy about it. If I saw somebody doing that for jade quarry I’m pretty sure I would report them too. But it’s not like we can really give it back.

What do we do, not defend the north supply camp so you can reclaim it? I don’t trust the opposing sides to just nick the orb back without taking the camp and every cap point in between. Hell even with a competent commander that knows that a side is giving the orb back, the lemming horde is still going to take the camp even with the commander saying not to.

As for the spies, how do we know they are for one server for another? It’s just as easy to call yourself Stormbluff spy if yer from Jade Quarry as it is for a stormbluff spy to call themselves Jade Quarry Spy. Just their name or what they claim in chat is hardly evidence.

WvW Spies: Bannable? Allowed?

Now I’ve not complained about many of ANet’s decisions, but the whole spying is allowed thing gets me. It basically cripples any advanced tactical cabability, limiting it only to large guilds. At which point pugs can and most likely will feel left out and will be interfering with the good of the server, taking up the space of a member of a large guild that could be in on the plan.

I guess all I can do is hope they implement guesting soon so all this free transfers foolishness can be done away with. I’m sure it would reduce this crap quite a bit if it cost these spies something to do it.

I would like an answer too. Report them for exploiting or will it just get the reporter banned for misuse of report? I’m pretty sure ANet won’t do anything about folks in 3rd party comms since that isn’t their problem, but theres still plenty of people listening in to team chat, wasting supply on walltop rams and things like that.

I know this kind of thing is expected from time to time, but here it just seems to be entirely too prevalent, and it kills any attempt at real strategy. I havent seen an EB keep in a week that didn’t have useless rams built or being built.

How are you going to give orders any more complicated than zerg here or there if your only means of communication is not even remotely secure?

Ah, my bad then. It often takes a few seconds after getting hit to be able to see or target the thief, and they wreck me because of it.

Carry on then.

Do DEs, explore, play WvW, play sPvP, gather money for money’s sake, play the trading post, travel around helping people with difficult to get objectives, try for 100% map completion, get an alt, max out all craftings, find farming locations, collect equipment skins, get 100% achievements, do all dungeons and all branches of dungeons, get influence for guilds, kill bunnies, do jumping puzzles, capture amusing screenshots, meander randomly...

I’m partial to WvW and random meandering myself.

As someone who has played tons of thief/mesmer since beta.

Yes invis is insanely strong in this game.

Stronger than pretty much any MMO out there.

Apparently you’ve never played WoW with perma stealth?...

WoW perma stealth goes away when you attack or get hit. GW2 Stealth doesn’t, that’s huge. I don’t really think it’s OP enough to need a dedicated anti stealth though.

Maybe if it was easier to manually aim ranged attacks it would be better. Quite a few times I scared a thief off with fear me or the warrior longbow burst at my feet and saw the little stealth tell that shows up now and then, but couldn’t take advantage of it because my character seems obsessed with firing arrows into the ground at his feet when I don’t have a target instead of in the direction I know the thief is traveling.

The Charr as Smiths or Metalworkers

Like others I have to disagree with the OP here. Charr metalwrkers likely also have a compound they can apply to exposed areas of fur to further reduce danger from burns. Fire retardants are really not new technology.

As for their claws, i believe they are retractable, even if the claws are not, the charr could still design their tools around them. A wider hilt and/or grooves in the hilt to accommodate the claws and they shouldn’t have any difficulty with tools or weapons. If I remember right they use their claws in place of tools when applicable anyway.
