Halloween dailies not counting toward meta?

As far as I can see, only unique dailies count, repeat dailies do not. The story achievements from the second instance (Back in the Box, Beaten Bloody and Upset Stomach) do not count for the meta. I’m not sure about the first instance (Containment). The repeatable achievement from Lunatic Inquisition, like basically all repeatable achievements, also does not count for the meta.

1. Log in as toon in Southsun Cove and gather Blooming Passiflora
2. Switch to toon in Rata Sum, gather home instance nodes and charge quartz, check TP
3. Switch to toon in Dry Top for the Dailies, try to get the instance to T4 for quartz gathering
4. Go back to Southsun Cove for more Blooming Passiflora if not maxed
5. If there is still time, do whatever (leveling alts, WvW, achievements, living story…)

Same here. Choosing the category Other → Dyes brings up nothing. Choosing the category Other and typing Dye in the search field brings up a handful of crafted dyes. Only when no category filter is active and Dye is entered into the search field is it possible to search for dyes. It’s broken since Monday.

It’s part of the New Player Experience. Since information about gathering is only displayed at level 9 (at which point gathering nodes are also shown in the map), ANET has removed gathering nodes from very low level areas. They have also, with no good reason discernible by the player community, removed cooking ingredients from karma/heart merchants in those same low level areas.

Whether or not they had other/additional reasons for that change is currently unknown.

The Wayfarer Foothills potato farm was moved to Crossroads Haven in Halvaunt Snowfield, by the way.

Toolbar icon could work, though unlike elementalist attunements, engineer kit icons share a color scheme, which requires more focus on the toolbar to glean the information than it would for the elementalist.

Hmm, I’m not a huge fan of that idea. Do elementalist conjured weapons and warrior banners (when carried as a bundle) have toolbar icons?

As such, in addition to the toolbar icon, hobosacks should also be replaced with in-hand indicators of kits (held items). flamethrower and elixir gun already have these, and the wrench for tool kit could just be made a little bigger to increase visibility. medkit could hate a bandage-pack in one hand and a syringe in the other. bomb kit could have a bomb in one hand and a lit lighter or match in the other, and grenade kit could have a two-barreled grenade launcher (seeing as, untraited, the kit skills fire two grenades each)

YES PLEASE. Replacing the hobosacks with distinctive hand-held items would be great!

Talk to the little golems beside some of the gates. They will be able to port you to the correct place in the puzzle. (This is essentially what happens when you die. Except for the dying first.)

Personal Story - instance marker issue

After the Sept. 9 patch, I’ve noticed a few instances that have their markers in strange places. For instance, my Lv. 72 Necromancer is currently doing the Lv. 60 chapter. The story step “The Priory Assailed” gives the information “Meet Trahearne at the Durmand Priory”. However, the entry point to the instance is just south of Thunderhorns Waypoint whereas the instance itself begins with the player standing at the bottom of the eastern staircase leading up to the Priory itself.

This has been the case for a long while at least, and is nothing new. I find it rather inconvenient, too, to have to track through half the map (I usually enter it from the LA Asura gate), only to be whisked to a point right outside the Priory, so I think this marker should be moved.

I noticed this, too, while playing through the Lv. 70 chapter, I believe. A few of my friends and I were progressing together, and a couple of instances had entry points in Fort Trinity, but they teleported us all the way to places like Cursed Shore for the instance itself.

That is intentional, because the Level 70 story now partially happens in higher level areas (75-80), so an actual level 70 player would not easily be able to get to those places on foot.

I can’t think of a single vista that I was “stuck” at once viewed.

I think there is one in Rata Sum where you have to WP out or jump to your death (and then WP out :-P). But a) that’s the only one I can think of and b) WPs are free in cities, so no problem.

That definitely sounds like a bug. On the other hand, why waste an Elite skill with a long cooldown on her when your off-hand pistol has a daze at hand whenever you want? Off-hand pistol thieves make great dedicated interrupters for a Tootsie fight (as long as someone else has her aggro :-P ), and I love fighting her in that role. I’m always saddened when people go to the Colocal Queen instead of Tootsie.

This is definitely broken. The skill 5 only becomes visible very rarely, and mostly the targets just die. And can’t activate the ring, tried talking to Bracctus as well. sigh

Yep, the arena doesn’t activate anymore, so that part is totally broken. As for capturing animals, when fighting drakes the 5 skill would only get unlocked for me when they’re dying. When fighting minotaurs, the 5 skill would usually become available when the target is anywhere between 1/2 and 1/3 health, making capture possible provided they didn’t have too many bleed stacks ticking away at their health. In short, carefully hunting those dainty minotaurs was the only way for me to finish this heart.

This gets reported from time to time, so yes, others are having problems with this as well. Since this is caused by how the implementation of those aspect skills deals (or rather fails to deal) with any kind of lag (be it in the network or on the server), there isn’t much you can do, apart from trying to minimize network lag (no WLAN, perhaps a different IP service provider) or trying to find a map instance with less lag.

I can see why.

87.5% of the weaponsets skills do direct damage. The 12.5% (1 single skill) that does condition damage does so with a single, easily cleansed condition.

This is also an easy place to try with double the chance: Skrittsburg Center to the left and right behind the Skritt King’s throne.

Ooh, that’s good to know, especially since some here have reported getting the #3 scrap out of those chests. My elementalist will head there anyway once she’s done with Snowden Drifts.

Can you park a character there, or do you get thrown out of Skrittsburgh Center when the gates are closed?

Except it’s still a kittenty condition damage based move in a power/crit damage based set.

D/D is clearly not a hybrid set – it has exactly 1 skill that can do damage with conditions (no, poison on lotus strike is not a viable damage source for condition builds). That is not a hybrid set.

sigh There we go again. Yes, most of the D/D skills are direct damage. Death Blossom, though, provides some of the strongest bleed stacks in the game and an easy way to stack them so they do significant damage. I don’t think that this is an accident like some other skills in this game which provide bleeding as something of an afterthought. Which, yes, makes D/D a hybrid set, whether you want it to or not.

With the poison to reduce healing, the Heart Seeker as a (admittedly somewhat short-ranged) gap closer, Dancing Dagger helping both with getting close and getting away, and Cloak and Dagger for stealth access, that makes it a decent hybrid set, as far as these things go. Is it competitive in PvP? Probably not, from what I’m hearing, and something should perhaps be done about that. Changing the character of the whole set, especially when the Thief already has a bunch of pure power sets (S/P, S/D, D/P), does not strike me as the way to do so, though.

Is there a chest that semi-reliably drops scrap #3?

The chest by the Colocal Queen’s spawn point in Dry Top (Lair of the Beast) drops the #2 scrap with a chance somewhere between 33 and 50% (by feel, not measured :-P ), so I get that one all the freaking time. Is there a similarly reliable way to get the #3 scrap? It’s the only one I’m still missing, even after doing lots of Jumping Puzzles in Maguuma Jungle this weekend.

They are back items, not bags. As such, they do not have storage slots, but provide an upgrade slot and, at the highest upgrade level, an offensive or defensive infusion slot.

It’s not just you. Interacting with one of the gate golems (by either going back to the previous gate or simply dying) will still teleport you to the correct/next section of the puzzle, though.

This is still broken. When entering the pit you are not asked for the wanted difficulty level and so the pit fight never starts. The capture skill on Paenula’s rifle only activates on drakes when the drake dies, which makes capturing drakes impossible. The only way for me to progress the heart was to capture minotaurs, on which the rifle skill (mostly) works.

what is rubberbanding?

It’s when a movement skill gets executed and you don’t end up where you should but get moved back either to your start position or somewhere between your start position and where you should be. It’s as if there’s a rubber band that’s pulling you back to where you were, hence the name.

The cause is usually either lag or bugs.

Same problem here. I got the wind atunement and jumped past all the wind gusts. The Asura gate that is supposed to take me to the lightning section rejects me with an atunement error and warps me back to the start of the wind area.

ETA: Interestingly, dying or otherwise interacting with one of the little helper golems near some of the gates will still give the option of advancing to the next section. This eventually allowed me to finish the jumping puzzle (only after finding out that all Asura gates at the end of all atunement sections are similarly bugged, making the little golems the only way to finish this jumping puzzle).

I don't understand the point of Karma

106k is nothing. :-P Karma Merchants are really only important for crafting if you’re either a Chef (cooking ingredients) or a completionist who wants all recipes.

There is decent armor to be had at max level, e.g. the Temple armors from the Orrian temples which cost 42k per armor piece, so 252k for the whole suite. Except that Karma-bought armor can’t be salvaged, so there is no easy way to get potentially expensive Runes back out again. A few of the collections introduced with the last feature patch also rely heavily on stuff bought from Karma merchants. Other than that, I personally have no use for it, so I’m sitting on 900k after 8 months of playing.

You can make gold from crafting, but only if you pay attention to the market to find the constantly changing niches that are profitable, which I don’t find appealing at all.

Diving goggles are bugged for all high level characters right now. The only known workaround is to create a new character and level it to the point where the goggles get unlocked.

Because the most common underwater mobs are krait, and well, kitten krait.

Or risen, or inquest. But yeah. I just love the underwater areas in Frostgorge Sound, though. Sooo deep, sooo beautiful.

I do find that my enjoyment of underwater combat depends heavily on the Profession. I love the Engineer bomb kit due to its high DPS because of shortened/faster animations, my Guardian feels painfully slow and clunky, though.

There are several such issues with the new structure of the level 70 and 80 personal story segments. Some of them, like this one, could be fixed by simply removing stuff that doesn’t make sense anymore, others (especially those inconsistencies produced by the removal of the whole Greatest Fear segment) would require recording new lines of dialog and are thus unlikely to get fixed, ever.

Personally, I think the restructuring of the level 70/80 personal story was completely unnecessary and, given ANET’s inability or unwillingness to actually do it right, should be reverted, so that the story at least makes sense again.

Well, if you can think of such achievements the completion of which can’t be twisted and turned against the war effort, feel free to share.

I’m not the game design expert here, and neither do I have much experience in WvW, but I’d have thought that capturing Stonemist Castle, the Keeps and Towers all contribute, and so would killing dolyaks. The contribution from Sentries and Ruins is probably too small to be worth a whole lot, so if you want achievements for that, make them not worth all that much.

Sure, all of those are subject to the EotM karma train effect of trains from opposing factions avoiding each other and merely rampaging through a map and flipping the paper structures, but you could probably mostly avoid this by making the rewards in EotM higher than in the Borderlands and Eternal Battlegrounds to keep the PvD farmers in EotM. (The real solution here is probably to make zergs less effective overall in WvW, but that’s a different issue altogether.) You might also have situations where all people in the map coming to help capture or defend one particular Keep might be more helpful to the war effort than a couple of smaller groups capturing another camp or two, but that’s life.

But as I said, I’m not the game designer here, and neither am I a WvW expert. I can merely express my strong doubts that the current achievements are helpful in any way for the long term well-being of WvW (and criticize what comes across as curmudgeonly bitterness in those WvW veterans who look down upon any mere PvE players daring to come to their holy playgrounds with less than a 110% commitment to The Cause) while laying out my ideas of what would have possibly been more helpful.

You can, and should, blame these players. ANET has repeatedly stated that deliberately failing events in order to farm is not OK. But even apart from the game mechanics side – and I’m not totally opposed to exploiting such things myself, within reason – the one issue that is clearly to blame squarely on the kittenheads involved is the toxic response to the very reasonable requests from other players who want to finish those events.

It’s the same thing that got the Queensdale champ train killed off, a decision I wholeheartedly welcomed at the time, and which, I thought, took way too long to implement. The same applies here. If ANET is unwilling to bring the banhammer down on those kittenholes, the least they can and should do is to change the events so that fail-farming them no longer works or at least is considerably less lucrative than win-farming them.

With its interrupt, evade and cleave damage, Pistol Whip is incredibly seductive. It’s also, sadly, a trap. One that I fell into as well. The key to S/P is actually Black Powder + Auto Attack chains, like Mahkno suggests. Black Powder got nerfed in the feature patch, so it’s not as overwhelmingly good as before, but that combo is still a better way to stay alive and kill things on S/P than spamming Pistol Whip. Also learn to use Infiltrator’s Strike/Return strategically so you can extricate yourself out of a group of mobs when you’re getting overwhelmed.

Alternatively, explore other weapon sets. When I got to the point where you are now, I tried out all available weapon sets for a short time and discovered that I really like the mobility of D/D. I’ve run my thief mainly as a screw-the-meta D/D hybrid ever since, although I still use S/P on some fights. I want to explore the D/P and P/D weapon sets some more one of these days, but I’m still having too much fun with my current gear to do so.

Something is definitely broken about the map completion rewards. I just had a similar issue consuming the Ritual Tribal Paint in Lion’s Arch when the corresponding skill point was the last thing missing for the completion of Timberline Falls. It gave me the skill point but failed to give me the map completion rewards for Timberline Falls.

Finally. No more PvE AP hunters running around in wvw not helping the war effort. A good change.

bzzzt. Wrong. But thanks for playing. (Unless of course you want the WvW maps to become increasingly less populated from the double whammy of people wandering off to greener pastures and there being no new blood coming in from the vastly more populous PvE side.)

A good change would have been one where all the achievements were

  • pertinent to the war effort,
  • doable within the week,
  • providing the motivation to stick on the Wvw maps for more than 15 minutes, and to come back for more.

Thus getting new people to be long term interested in WvW, rewarding WvW veterans for something they’re doing anyway, and helping your server in the tournament.

The new achievements accomplish none of those things, much as many of the previous ones didn’t. Not having PvE AP hunters clog the map during the Tournament may be a short term positive, I’ll grant you that much. But it is only a short term positive, and a mid to long term negative.

I’m a primarily PvE player and I find these achievements disheartening.

Same here. I was actually kinda looking forward to getting into WvW a little. But when killing three sentries and capping two ruins was all I needed to do to max out my tournament AP rewards for this week, my motivation kinda slumped.

From my perspective, what would have motivated me more would have been something like the Meta-Achievement structure, which ANet said they didn’t want to use anymore: Have tiered achievements for things like sentries (25), ruins (25), dolyaks (20), camps (10), towers (5) and maybe keeps, then hand out the meta-achievement with the tournament rewards when you get three of the single achievements. As it is, the tournament achievements are laughably trivial while the permanent WvW achievements are completely absurd, and neither does anything to motivate me to get more into WvW.

During the “Help Costi Atl and his tribe hunt for termite larvae” heart in Sparkfly Fen, when you throw the termite larvae meat into the fire, the cooked meat in the fire is labelled “Unknown”.

I mean, with the explosive reaction that happens when you throw that meat into the fire, I’m sure I have no idea of what the result of that reaction might be, but the game clearly should…

I would be fine with Anet just cleaning up the animation and maybe making the evade slightly longer.

I remember reading somewhere that the skill used to have a 1/2 second evade, which got nerfed when people complained about the evade spam. But yeah, a more reliable or slightly longer evade is just about the only change I would like to see on that skill.

Despite my dubious wording, my point wasn’t that Posion sucked, it was that Poison doesn’t benefit enough from building around conditions.

True, but it’s not meant to be. The main point of Poison is to reduce healing. The damage is kinda just a bonus.

As long as you think of D/D as a power set, you’ll hate Death Blossom. Now, I’m by no means an expert, but I conceptualize the Thief weapon sets as follows:
S/D, S/P, D/P – power,
P/D – condi,
P/P, D/D – hybrid, both having reasonably good bleed application in an otherwise direct damage build.

Now, does that mean that all the weapon sets work? Not necessarily, but that’s a different discussion altogether. The point is, you can’t just buff Death Blossom. It applies some of the strongest bleed stacks in the game, and buffing its direct damage would necessitate nerfing or removing the bleeds, and thus completely changing the character of the skill, and hence the weapon set.

For me, it wasn’t the monthly, which would have sucked a lot, but the daily. I had done the 8 PvE daily achievements before the patch came live, and I got to do a 9th PvE daily achievement afterwards because one I had done got changed around for something else.
