Anet, you really exceeded my expectations with HoT.
A boring little bit about me. I suffer from mild level autism. That means that when things don’t go my way, or I’m bored, I tend to throw all my toys out of the pram and end up redacting later. This is one of those instances. I know I have a reputation on here for my childish rages, for which I am truly sorry. Autism isn’t an excuse for poor manners.
I have had some negative criticisms about HoT and voiced them, but most of that negativity has come through my own mistakes and idiocy, or not understanding how things work. I really need to think more before I type. So here is my honest feedback.
HoT Story – A little short, but very very sweet. The new method of conversation delivery is awesome, it really helps with immersion. We finally tie up some loose ends (although I still don’t trust or forgive Caithe. You listened to us and toned down the KasJory lurve storyline, Braham has really come into his own as a character, Taimi got even better, and I’m so glad to see more of Canach. Really enjoyed it, even if my ping is making me struggle with the finale a little.
Dynamic events in Maguuma – Brilliant. Especially the night time missions, I really do get the feeling of being up against it in hostile territory. I love the wyverns especially. Still a little too much insta-downing going on but I can forgive that.
Scenery – astounding. I love the verticality, and it really feels like an achevement to get some of the vistas. Gliding is brilliant, I can’t wait to unlock more of my masteries for it and the mushrooms. I heavily criticised the grind of Mastery Points… but it turns out I hadn’t worked out that I have to train a new mastery when the bar is full, so that is my mistake. A few things could have been labelled better. A minor niggle. Tarir is just amazing to play through.
Speciality unlocking – Really glad to see that the unlocking requirement has been reduced. I wouldnt have been too upset if it had stayed at 400 points, but 250 or even 300 feels more reasonable.
So lots of great points. I am excited to play the game again, the game I love so much.
The only cons from my perspective is that utility skills seem to be slow to activate, or don’t activate on the first try, and those goshdarned Rolling Devils
All in all, really enjoying HoT and I definitely think it’s worth the price. Thanks, Anet!
Aww I think it’s hilarious!
And I think most of us can work out that you need some sort of toxic mastery to pass the test. I really like the variation in Hero Point achievements that Anet came up with.
Edit:
I should grow up and stop being such a whiny *.

I just feel like an idiot… I was screaming at the screen because from my perspective, my bar was stuck and I wasnt getting EXP…
I…
Um…
Yeah…
I dun screwed up.
Seems that because of the Mastery window open button at the end of the EXP bar, I thought the bar was not completing when in fact I had completed that EXP level some time previous.
After being guided to the Mastery window, I had earned enough EXP to get to level 5 Mastery, and master Updrafts and Bouncing Mushroom use…
Levelling is still slow but not anywhere near as bad as I thought it was.
Just gave it another try. Saw 4 events, 1 got completed while I was on my way to it, I took part in the 2nd, the 3rd required updrafts to get to it the the 4th was a Champion and I was the only person there.
I spend 10-15 minutes walking around LOOKING for an event then find I cant get to it because its gated behind a skill.
Do events people tell me. I CANT GET TO ANY kittenING EVENTS. I need to get to events to get masteries to get to kittening events.
In the meantime the limited number of boosters I have and am told I need to gain EXP faster are tick tick ticking away without being of any use to me.
Some of my old guildmates have asked me if HoT is worth buying. I have told them no.
(edited by GuzziHero.2467)
I dont find any of the events that hard, I was soloing group events. Its just taking way too long to level up. I dont have the time required to powerlevel. It’ll take me 7-8 months of repetitive play at my rate of play.
Clearly most think the game is great but the grind is bringing it down a bit.
You really REALLY feel the grind here.
The story, visuals, voice acting, dialogue, AI, fights, new monsters, areas and just everything is awesome.
But for the third time, dat kitten grind.
Did I mention that it’s grindy as hell?
My thoughts exactly.
Popped a birthday booster, killed a champion troll, barely saw the bar move.
I can usually play about 4-5 hours a week because of my eclectic work schedule, I gave up a days overtime work to play this today, and Im not even level 3.
Its to much. Its demoralising and depressing and I dont think I can keep my interest for the 8 months it’ll take to see mastery completion or 4-5 months for a specialisation.
So long and thanks for all the fish, GW2.
When those with alts need those laurels to equip ASScended trinkets that should never have been made overpowered in the first place.
So, Im in map, EXP going up inexorably slowly. I complete events, I get 100%+ completions, and the bar hardly shifts.
I ask in map, “What am I supposed to do to get exp? Its taking 2-3 hours per level”.
“Use boosters”
So… we have to buy boosters to gain exp at any reasonable rate? Is that what the game is becoming?
Look, I love the new content, I love Anet for bringing it to us. But I don’t honestly know how long I can keep repeating the same content over and over and over before I get bored and quit.
Id like to reduce my 8/10 to 6/10 because I just saw just what an EXP grind this game now has.
Im a casual player, with altitis, and I am ****ed both ways. Deleted 3 alts, might delete 1-2 more. Alts are even more a kitten liability than they were previously.
The guild hall is thunging MASSIVE. I don’t see how having one for your guild is in any way a benefit to your gameplay unless you are in a large guild.
At the beginning at least there is no bank, no trading post, no crafting stations… nothing. It is a HUGE empty hall. You really aren’t missing a whole lot by not having one.
8 / 10.
Would be 9 if Elite wasn’t grindy.
Im enjoying the game atm… but I think this exp grinding is gonna have me bored and re-quitting within a month. A shame really
Im already deleting level 80s. No point if Im never going to be able to progress them due to grind.
Amazing expac so far, loving it. Levelling feels hopeless however, 4 hours of play for 1 1/2 exp levels. This is pretty much APB: Reloaded levels of exp grind.
Is there anything that can be done to speed up the process a little? I appreciate that we don’t want to finish everything in a week but the slow progression of the exp bar is a little demoralising.
It's Begun!!! I love you GW 2 Creators!!!

100%, Well done and congratulations to Anet!
I know I am a harsh critic, but its only because I love GW2 so much. Thank you to ArenaNet for bringing this game. I’ve played it for longer than I have managed to keep interest in any game previously, and I hope to be playing it for years to come.
Another reason to never want another alt.
Is there any way to trade in 50 tomes of knowledge for something useful?
214 on my ‘main’ O_o
More surprisingly, 202 on my Guardian who I never play. (but who has map completion)
(edited by GuzziHero.2467)
I watched that guys presentation on the camera changes and… I still have NO idea what he was trying to say. He was so kitten choppy and all over the place. I respect his programming skills immensely, but he can’t present at all.
Does someone have cliffnotes on what he was trying to say? Its like an Englishman trying to listen to a speech in German, and played backwards.
NM, got it.

I never had a problem with the Engineer and Elementalist logos.
If it looks like a bottle, its an Engineer.
If it looks like a poo, its an Elementalist.
Trahearne really stepped up in quality in LS2 but its fashionable to hate him so people’s opinions won’t change.
His voice actor is dull however.
Pretty much exclusively Scrapper.
[Gives the Engineer bro-fist]
ENGINEER AM MASTA PROF!
Ahh*m. I believe I shall be using an Engineer.
I do miss her, but most of all I miss Robo-Thatcher!
Is there any other profession than Engineer?
In order of top to bottom:
1. Engineer
2. Ranger
3. Warrior
4. Guardian
5. Thief
6. Revenant
7. Necromancer
8. Mesmer
9. Elementalist.
Yeah, I don’t like silk professions much, and prefer ‘practical’ professions over fancy magickers.
I don’t work 7 days a week. If I set time aside, I could make a raid. But I don’t get enough time or a good enough schedule to regularly run 100+ fractal runs to get a half decent set of Ascended. You have no idea how frikkin annoying my work schedule is. So still, the wrong answer :p
I prefer to think of it a little like The Secret World. When you WP after death, it is as if your anima has left your body and gone back to a place where it can gather itself up and reform. Leyline hubs (World Roots in TSW) are as good as any a mechanic to reanimate.
Look up the webcomic ‘Crushed: The Doomed Kitty’. Episode 1 explains it well enough
I did say that I could find time to do 1-2 fractals per week. I would have time for a raid or two per week.
Nice attempt, but BZZZZT. Wrong answer.
im sorry ascended gear drops in many different places. its been out for years. If you dont have a set of ascended gear you have less than 500 hours of play time and arent ready for raids anyway. if you have more than 500 hours and dont have 1-5 sets of ascended armor stop sitting in lions arch mulling around map chat. I have a f2p in my guild thats already working on ascended gear and he just hit level 80.
Over 3800 hours across 2 accounts, and that is with not having hardly played since NPE.
I have Ascended trinkets, sure.
I struggle to do Fractals. When you work shifts like 1000-2030, or 1235-0030, you have little free time or energy to grind fractals. I could probably do 1 or 2 a week, if I was lucky enough to find a group from my guild online, but I have a life outside games.
You’re salty about ascended? Welcome to the club, OP. Been salty about it since the Lost Shores myself, but it’s been in the game for so long I’ve basically become resigned to its existence. Thankfully I have a full set of it, so if its needed for raids, I should be fine. I have doubts that it will be, though.
But is it Ascended Zerk? If so, according to comments on all the new content, you could be SoL
Well, so it was not a lie. but still they changed their mind, the manifesto is not valid anymore and with it the reason many of us bought the game years ago.
It’s a different kind of game now
Indeed. The concepts of grind and buy to win (with in-game currency of course rather than real world moolah if you prefer) have crept into this game like a dark shadow.
Anet flat out lied to us.
I would like to apologise for this remark I made earlier. It is incorrect and unfair. I know, of course, that at the time of launch and the comment about Exotics being the final tier of gear being made, it is wholly possible that Ascended gear was not in Anet’s design plan.
So yes, I’m sorry for making this comment and I would like to retract it.
and its ‘requirement’ to complete raids.
When I started playing GW2, Exotic was said to be the ultimate gear and no gear would superscede it. Yes there were Legendary weapons but they were no more powerful than Exotics. In some cases I spent real money to buy gems to equip a whole raft of alts.
Then Ascended was launched. Yes, the Ascended was mainly for Fractals but it increased the power base for everything. But it felt like a kick in the teeth, and I deleted many alts since crafting Ascended just isn’t in my game plan. Say what you like about Ascended being account not soulbound, I wouldn’t have been happy unless each alt had their own gear. So most of my alts became obsolete.
As it turns out, I didn’t even bother crafting Ascended for the remaining alts, and I nearly quit the game because of the betrayal.
Now the new raid content has been centred around Ascendeds.
Imagine buying a car and 2 years later a newer, faster model is launched. You suck it up, you still have a good car.
But imagine then being told “Your car isn’t good enough to drive on certain roads”.
That is why I am salty.
Ascended that are stronger than Exotics shouldn’t have been introduced in the first place except for adding Infusion slots for Fractals. Thats how it should have been, Exotic power plus Infusion slots. Anet flat out lied to us.
Id have no issue with Ascended having the same stats as exotic PLUS infusions. Its the Exotic-plus that grinds my gears.
I guess that it was only a matter of time before they started making non-fractal Ascended-intended gear to truly force us players to craft or be excluded.
Well, in that case, thanks to Anet for excluding more players. Looks like I’ll never see a raid then.
So basically another thing that makes their word about Exotic being final tier gear and usable for all content into more of a lie.
I hope in the actual raid, Ascended is provided (if only for that instance), or basically it means that they are excluding a lot of players who don’t have Ascended.
With a set of Ascended gear being granted upon entry, does this mean that Ascended gear and infusions will be required to complete raids?
If so, thats me out since I don’t do crafting at all and tbh I don’t even understand the defensive/offensive fusion system anyway.
I made a Beta Engineer, it kicks me into the starter instance at level 1.
Spec are you most excited for? (Strawpoll)

Scrapper because Engineer am bestest profession.
I wouldnt consider taking anything less than a level 80 into a dungeon anyway. Unless you have a considerate guild. noone will take a player with an non-80 into one.
I sure hope not. Maybe it’s the writing, maybe it’s the delivery, maybe it’s the medium, but it’s a struggle for me to care a whole lot about the LS2 characters, and Marjory and Kasmeer have never had much chemistry, in my opinion.
The more we focus on the player character and the world, rather than the dramas of the LS2 characters, the better.
Nah, there’s chemistry. Its just forced, awkward and completely unrealistic chemistry.
Targeting has been intrinsically broken since about the time of the AprilMegaFailPatch last year.
Just been fighting the Sinister Triad in Brisban Wildlands. I hit tab to select a target. Bandit Mine. Tab again. Bandit Mine thats off screen. Again. Nightmare Courtier. Again. Bandit Mine. Once more and I get the Ebon Knight Cariaddar.
Totally broken, and its ridiculous.
I need this in my life <3
ENGINEER MASTER PROFESSION!
ArenaNet doesn’t support roleplaying.
As far as I’m concerned, GW2 has no right to an RPG title. Its an MMO sandbox adventure game.
