Op showing his math skills that are wrong in every thing ever involving a random number generator.

If your chance of getting a pre is .2% from rares. No matter how many times you forge its still going to be .2%. It doesnt matter if you do it 500 times or 3.

And you just showed that you didn’t read a single post in this thread. You’re assuming a true RNG system which this game does not have. It’s pseudo RNG meaning the rolls are predetermined. And if your lucky number for getting a precursor only pops up at times that you’re either asleep or at work, you can chuck whatever you want in that forge but the chance you’ll get a precursor is zero, not .2%.

Sorry to correct you, but you are wrong. PRNG is not the issue here.

BL chest content is a gamble. If you buy keys with real money, it’s a gamble with real money.

I don’t gamble with real money. If I get a key from personal story or map completion, great. If not, then be it.

I don’t need to have everything in this game. Me money’s me own. I buy the things I personally feel worth it, I leave the rest.

There’s a lot of ppl with a lot of gambling money, otherwise this issue would not still exist.

b) RNG is crap as it is ignoring player commitment

And if it started counting players commitment it would no longer be RNG and people would rage like made because you were “forced” to use the Mystic Forge in order to mechanically increase your chance to get stuff.

Depends on what “commitment” really means. I think, the upcoming precursor collection hunt thingie may revolve around some sort of commitment. Doesn’t necessarily only take Mystic Flusher into account.

Apart from that, my c) is the real problem. The way it is constructed now, getting a precursor from a loot drop is rare and feels epic. Definitely one of my defining moments in game, maybe because it took 2 years.

public class RnGTest {
public static void main(String[] args) {
long max = Long.MIN_VALUE;
long min = Long.MAX_VALUE;
long lastHit = 0;
System.out.println(“Starting…”);
for (long count = 0; count < 10000000; count++) {
int rnd = (int)(Math.random() * 1000);
if (rnd == 123) {
long diff = count – lastHit;
lastHit = count;
max = Math.max(max, diff);
min = Math.min(min, diff);
}
}
System.out.println(“Complete.”);
System.out.println(String.format(“Min %d, Max %d”, min, max));
}
}

This program uses prng to create a 1 in 1000 chance and then calculates on a million tries the maximum streak and the minimum streak
between two hits.

A few runs:
Min 1, Max 10093
Min 1, Max 9812
Min 1, Max 9336
Min 1, Max 11568

What that means:

although the chance was 1 in 1000, on a million attempts the programs finds out that the maximum unlucky streak can be as much as 10000 attempts between hits. The minimal attempts btw. is more or less 1 always.

TL;DR:
a) It doesn’t work as you think.
b) RNG is crap as it is ignoring player commitment
c) I loved the moment when Spark dropped

In order to see results like the statistical view implies, you have to do A LOT MORE tries. A lot more.

A) This is GW2 and not GW1 2.0. 2.5 years into the game it is about time a whole lot of you realize that.

B) This game has been advertised as B2P, so I don’t see why people are upset when they are asked to pay for an expansion.

C) Even with the box prices for game and expansion added (and we don’t know the target price for the expansion yet) it is a lot of gaming fun for your coin. If you don’t feel like that, then of course you are free to do whatever you think your money is better spent on. I for myself have 2.6k+ hours of gameplay for the box price and a few gem purchases here and there and neither a sub-based game nor a f2p game would have given me that value for the money. I’ve been there, so I know.

^ Which is a form of pay-to-win. Having to go sell loot less often gives an advantage, and newer players have to pay physical cash to do it.

For a very narrow minded definition of winning, perhaps.

In practise: Bank space is a convenience feature that wont “win” anything for anybody.

Bank space is not required for anything but your own convenience, and its the de facto standard for good sub free MMOs to sell convenience to make money, as opposed to bad f2p MMOs that will sell power or outright sell content to make money.

You just can’t win an argument with these “pay to win” people who twist and stretch the definition out of its true meaning to cover their every complaint. They are immune to logic.

I had a long discussion with a guy who insisted that Guild Wars 2 was pay to win because you can buy cosmetic armor and weapons from the gem store and that those who did so were winning.

Apart from the outright lie that new players have to pay physical cash in order to sell loot less often…

You do not NEED armour. It is fully possible to play the game without it.

Correct. And additionally you will gain access to new armor by playing (and you can do most PvE-content in this game in blues which are not even your level).

And just like that you will gather ingame gold, that you can eventually use to convert it to gems to buy bank space. So you can improve your account by playing the game WITHOUT SPENDING ANY CENT OF REAL MONEY after you purchased the box. Which is exactly as advertised.

Where is the problem again?

How do you make 10 gold an hour? You said earlier you did it mining platinum. Are you using the actual pay-to-win item, the sprocket mining tool?

Actually this wording makes me think you really want to provoke. It should be clear by now even to you, that “winning” is only a useful term in the context of a competition, otherwise there is nothing to win – or lose. Farming resource nodes is in no way a competition, everybody has their own nodes anyway and there is nothing you lose if you only use the NPC resource tools. One could say on the contrary you will save money this way, as the BL tools are extremely expensive and the added value is minor.

The thing with your notion of pay-to-win is that by using the term in such an inflationary and unappropriate manner you are desensitizing people for the real meaning of it. So I kindly ask that we all please reserve such terms for situations where they are appropriate and may point to a real problem.

Server merging

in WvW

Posted by: Halvorn.9831

Halvorn.9831

Server merges are the opposite of what helps with population imbalance in WvW.

Like it or not, we need server splits and a reduction of the player cap per server. The low mark of the population will always be 0, that cannot be helped. So the only end that can be fixed is the upper mark. It has to come down. The populated servers are the problem, not the empty ones.

Of course this will not happen, since players won’t like it. But server merges will in fact make things not better. The populated servers remain populated, the merged servers will still lose players.

I do agree with the Gold-Gem though. They should probably remove it, since that seems to be the main complaints people bring up. “The rate is way too high, everything in the gemstore costs hundreds of gold!!”.

Can I respectfully disagree? Converting between Gems and Gold is an option. An option that may help player under specific circumstances. You have gems left but not enough? Convert some gold into the missing gems. You need more gold but cannot spend the time currently? Buy some gems and convert them?

Independently of the current rate, the conversion is an option and options are good.

On the topic itself: I do not see that the current price for bank tabs is too high. I’ve bought quite a few in 2.5 years of GW2 and am happily supporting the game by these means; in fact I think this is waaaaay superior to shelling out a sub regularly. Subs are dead if your game is not WoW, let’s face it.

I do think however that the bag spaces should not have been per character. They should have been account-wide. Making them per-character is not very alt-friendly.

Dragon Ball is my favorite Activity

Halvorn.9831

Personally I do not like DB that much. Yes, it is a bit like UT and UT was great, but UT had the one thing that is necessary for this kind of fast paced activity: it had a first person cam, since it is a FPS. With the camera in GW2 still seriously broken after 2.5 years, this type of activity is not very enjoyable for me. And I am not expecting the GW2 camera to ever be fixed, so narrow tunnels and the likes are things I avoid if I can.

On a side node I think that the activities themselves should be pushed somewhat. Yes, from time to time they’re in the daily rotation, but since there is quite a few of them and they are not very often part of the daily, they are in a state of neglect. I really love the sanctum sprint and with the zephyr-sanctum crashed and gone the sprint will only be around in the form of the daily activity and it has to share even that place with all other activities. So: make activities a fixed daily again, please

Same on mangler. Mesmers and Guardians should aim for mid lane, as that is usually the one to fight the mangler. Reflect is your friend here as well (and don’t forget to kill those pustels, they are the top reason this boss fails).

But there is still so much else to do so it is not a huge letdown. You didn’t waste a sub rate for this event, you know. It’s just a free option.

Arena Fights are possible in self-created arenas.

Large scale PvP is possible in WvW.

I think to this day it is one of the best design decisions of the ANet team ever to separate the play grounds for the PvE and the PvP crowd. Why change this?

I cannot see a single benefit of PvP in the PvE environment. I caan however easily see the drawbacks: spreading toxicity, mistrust amongst players, griefing by ruining each others events etc.

So my personal opinion stays at it is: no to open world pvp.

PS: I do play and enjoy all modes this game has to offer. I soemwhat suck at PvP, at least in my own opinion , but I don’t mind, I always try to improve and the way PvP and WvW are set up here means that the mood overall remains more friendly than in every other game I have played to date. I don’t want to lose that.

Traits Part 2

The 50% of the people who haven’t looked twice at their trait screen since launch. I remember one of the devs saying something about how many people NEVER looked at a trait screen. It was an amazing number.

You surely are with me when I am saying that a solution to this problem cannot be to make acquiring these traits even more of an effort.

Having said that I think the direction of this discussion is somewhat misleading. It is not important whether an absolute majority of players do or don’t like this system. Those who don’t even care for traits at all, are they the target audience?

What about those who care of the traits? Do you think there is a tendency how they think of the current trait system?

Not all of them are RNG kings, but there are a couple who think a ‘bad week’ of looting in gw2 is getting less than two precursors, either from drops or from throwing half a dozen random yellows in the Mystic flusher.

There is a thread around where people report their /age and how many precursors they have gotten in that time. Maybe you feel less alone if you read through that. FYI: I have around 2k6 hours and 1 precursor drop and I felt extraordinarily lucky.

Expecting two precursors a week from drops or “half a dozen” rares is plain BS. Don’t fall for it.

Traits Part 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Halvorn.9831

Halvorn.9831

In my guild a lot of players already have quite some alts but they’re not very keen on leveling the missing ones now with this trait system.

Additionally I’d like to address your reasoning of “if you don’t know the old system, then you’re not affected”. I disagree.

It is not about being relatively worse than before. It is bad in its own and it hinders even new players who never experienced the old system as it inherently makes the process of acquiring your traits for every new character tedious, independently of what it used to be. They step away from creating an alt since they don’t want to do this again and again.

So you too can’t know that it is NOT a significant percentage of the player base which is affected by this trait system, since even that is only an assumption. I find it easy to reason that it annoys new players independently of how it was and it annoys veterans as well.

I don’t think you are right with your “bad luck” or “rng is broken on me” feeling. The point is that the loot distribution in general is unsatisfying. Way too few “OMG look at this” experiences.

Give out less garbage and blue/green, or at least add the luck directly to my account rather than me having to click on the essences. And generally increase the rates for rares and exos, so that even those with an unlucky strain on the rng at least sometimes feel rewarded for their efforts plx.

Traits Part 2

Halvorn.9831

You act like 10 months is a long time in terms of computer software changes and you act like the trait change negatively affected 90% of the population. It’s not the case.

New players who don’t know any better just accept it as we all would have had it been there when we logged in. It would have been normal for the game.

People who have just one or two characters, it’s not really a big deal. It does affect altoholics like me, but I’m not your typical player.

I happen to be on your boat quite often, but this time I can’t.

I know that it is impossible to come up with absolute figures. The only way to find out how players think about this is by asking around those you know – your guild and friends – and draw your conclusions on that.

And on most topics discussed here there are always a wealth of different opinions, so there is not a simple consensus.

Not so on traits: there is zero, 0, nada, null, keine, rien, acceptance of the current trait system. And almost everybody in my guild is an altoholic, having between 3 to 8 characters. So I feel quite safe when saying that this is a MAJOR annoyance felt throughout the player base and something has to be done.

I bought another two character slots a few months ago, but I haven’t used them because I wholeheartedly hate this trait system. I’ve done one new character since the trait change and still have not acquired all traits (I planned on not buying them but playing the game, but I cannot make myself run story mode of the dungeons again) and there is no way I’ll do that again for yet another character. ANet id directly losing money, because with the old trait system I surely had already created alts for the spare slots and already bought new ones.

Solo-Instance for Dungeons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Halvorn.9831

Halvorn.9831

Very interestingly the reason why I personally don’t like the dungeons in this game that much (including fractals) is because I think that 5 as a group size is too small. I would much more enjoy a dungeon experience in a group of let’s say 8.

But back to topic: if you have played more than one MMO you have surely come across a lot of mechanics/game modes/features that you think should be present in your current MMO-love. For me thats on the one hand crafting/harvesting as in Ryzom, on the other hand random dungeon missions like in Anarchy Online. Imagine you’d go to a white board, pick up a random mission that is generated for you or your group (depending on whether you are in a group when looking at the white board), you travel there and do that dungeon. It is generated randomly and scales to the group size you had when you accepted the mission. Feel ready for a challenge? Get the mission with a full group, then do it solo. Reward coulds be given out in form of mystic coin, laurels, any other existing currency.

Solo dungeons do not necessarily need to be smaller versions of the existing dungeons, the system could be completely independent.

No level increase

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Halvorn.9831

Halvorn.9831

The point is not that there is no increase in level cap. The point is that there is no new gear level.

If there was no new level cap but better armor was tied to mastery points, there’d still be vertical progression.

I’ve played Anarchy Online for quite some time. They had max level 200, which never changed. And with their first expansion they introduced “shadow levels” which basically was an increase in level cap, although they were parallel levels. And with their second expansion they introduced “alien invasion levels”. Which meant that you had character level decsriptions like 200/20/30. Theoretically they did not increase their level cap…

So the question is whether the masteries will act like some sort of parallel levels. We don’t know yet, but I am hopeful that they are not.

A) This topic pops up very often, so it seems it is not so insignificant, don’t you think? If something keeps annoying or irritating players, then something might be really wrong with it

B) I was in the same school of thought as the OP; meanwhile I’ve done WvW map completion on 5 chars, currently doing it on the 6th; you have to overcome your worries about what WvW is – it is not nearly as bad/aggressive/depressing as you think

C) I still think it was not a very clever decision to “force” people to do something they do not like

D) I do not understand the reasoning “to get a legendary you have to have been in 100% of what the world is” when PvP is left out; why not force players to also have at least Dolyak rank in order to forge a legendary?

Ah, another term added: space. Which has no reference to any of the other terms at all. What does the cardinality 1 of that term tell us? Right, nothing at all. It will still be 1 game, it will still be 1 world map, it will be 1 expansion. So it will be 1 “bunch of locations” added to the world map of the game by that expansion.

There is zero information in that cardinality. You are overinterpreting things.

More variations in player character models

Halvorn.9831

I was playing around with the character creation editor the other day.

When I consider creating a new character I have some type of personality in mind (that’s usually the only RP-part I do in game, come up with a concept for the way a character shall look)

While the chracter creation editor is a versatile tool that allows a lot of variation in the characters that you create I am direly missing some options, namely around human races like, well, Humans and Norn. Specifically I’d like to have more variety when creating

  • characters of different age; most characters, especially their faces, look like humans between 18 and somehwat around 40 years; I’d welcome to be able to create old men and women with more realisticly textured gray hair and more versatility in the creation of the faces
  • characters of different … let’s say weight; not all of use are slim or athletic, I’d love to be able to create chubby or even corpulent characters
  • characters with different posture; why not have a character with a tendencially sad expression that looks bowed down with sorrow?

What do you think? Do you tend to create strong heroes with more or less idealistic shape and appearance or would you – like me – be interested in having toons that may express different paths of life through their appearance?

Independently of the figures the OP was giving, there is one misconception in the mind of a lot of people.

Random does NOT mean evenly distributed. And it does NOT mean “fair”, as that is a human concept. It simply means “the outcome of one action is not influenced by the outcome of a previous action, but random”. And a random CHANCE simply means “and then a filter is added to the outcome of the action that only lets a specific range of possible values pass through.” So a random chance of 5% means: if the random generator generates discrete random values in a range of 1 to 100, only 5 of these values will be considered a success.

That’s it. To see an even distribution, the amount of samples has to be extremely big and while it is easy to do this on a programmatic base, it’s hard to do if you have to do it manually.

It really depresses me how people expect games to cater to bad/lazy players these days. In the past that was never the case. You either kept trying and learnt to overcome the challenge or you stopped.

And the word made round that the game was difficult, so it attracted a few new players and distracted everyone else. Which makes you lose more money than you win.

I am against rising the overall difficulty level of the game. For one, there are too many problems with the platform itself that may make the game unplayable for a lot of players if the difficulty is raised (network lags, still broken camera etc.). Additionally there are players like me who have a job. When I get home in the evening I’d like to enjoy my time, not bite into my keyboard because of stupidly tough content. I may enjoy challenges every now and then, but the days when I masochistically wanted to conquer a game are over.

I am all for an option to switch content to a “hard mode” (for instanced content) should a player or a group of players feel the desire to do so, of course with improved rewards. I would be interested in what percentage of the player would ever really use this. Without any real prove for this I have the idea that it will be done by a negligible minority only.

What Will Community Do If HoT Is Not Xpac

I think there is no such thing as “the” community. Whatever group of players you look at, it is still a group of individuals having individual expectations and reactions, which will cover the whole range between “what a relief, no expansion” to rage-quitting. My personal guess is that whatever is announced at PAX will be welcomed by the majority of players. And those who dislike it will let us know here in the forum, leaving the impression that the majority of players has the same opinion. Then those, who are in favour of the announcement will be called white knights, the dislikers will be called toxic… you know, business as usual, until whatever will be announced finally hits the gaming rigs of the players. Then the topics will shift, but the attitude will not. And the sun will always rise.

Personally I am looking forward to PAX in a mildly curious mood. Not expecting the redefinition of MMO gaming but a significant change in the direction that GW2 is heading too. I don’t believe in a “standard” expansion anyways, that would not fit the announcement.

As long as there are non-black-lion-ticket-bound skins left to acquire I have a goal in this game

Here in my place we have both. I have a Naga and I would switch to the G600, but I’m lefthanded and therefore out of options.

Be sure to look for scouts in the map (quite often they are overlooked). They point you to heart quests in the vicinity

After giving the new dailies another few days to settle, I now have a more accurate position.

I do like the login rewards, I do like the fact that they take away the need to complete dailies for mystic coins and laurels. So this is a win.

I honestly dislike two kinds of dailies: zone-bound events (and harvesting btw) and class-bound PvP. I think these should go away.

I miss however daily dodge, daily rezz, daily condition breaker… all those things that come naturally while you are playing and that tought players a thing or two in the game. Additionnally I think that the WvW-centric rewards for the more complex WvW-dailies should be upped.

If you do care about AP, you have to do a much shorter and less specific list to get it.

Wait, what?

How is “Do 4 events in Kessex Hills” less specific than “Do 5 events”?

And here’s to “the strange people in this thread that care about AP”: you realize that AP are just some grind to get rewards from the AP chest like specific weapon and armor skins, do you? And that horizontal progression is all this game is about? How strange to be interested in the things this game has to offer.

Precursor Crafting

I don’t see why people want the most “special” items in the game to be trivially obtainable. Legendaries are already common enough.

Personally I want them to be legendary, if anything.

Grinding for gold (or converting gems) and then buying a precursor of the TP which someone else has created in MF isn’t really legendary, you know. Just like getting the precursor via RNG.

I have to admit, I was lucky dropping a precursor in an instance. I had already given up hoping for one, so it was a great positive surprise. But being able to craft a precursor in a way similar (but potentially more complex) as Mawdrey, why not?
