I don’t like the way Counter-Magic is used. I suppose it’s meant to be keybound, but I keep wanting to hover my mouse over it, expecting some sort of tooltip about what I’m supposed to be doing.
The counter magic tutorial was in the first episode, which explained that it reverses the effects of whatever you are countering. It’s a generic skill, so the tooltip isn’t going to help. In this case, it interrupts his shadowstep combo.
Who was your audience for this? Seems like it was made for raiders despite your story generally being billed as casual solo content designed for all players.
Unlike other MMOs, ArenaNet is for the gamers rather than the casual majority. People have been complaining about the solo difficulty from the beginning. The game was never meant to be casual, as in easy, it was meant to be casual friendly in the sense that your time wasn’t being wasted. This instance roughly takes 20-30 minutes.
I did this as a zerker necro knowing that it’s intended for sturdier characters and expected to die a lot.
Necro is by default a sturdy profession, as it has a high health pool, a backup health bar and life leech, making it one of the easiest professions to play.
I think just getting there with that kind of gear is rare. (This is at the end of HoT, after all.)
It’s probably a lot more common than you’d expect. Unlike other MMOs, GW2 doesn’t provide you with the gear you need. For those simply following the story, you’re going to end up playing through HoT in rares, no earrings/accessories, and exotic head and gloves. Personally, this is how I play all my alts through HoT.
1% was the end raid, not raiding in general.
Which is what I referring to, specifically the completion of raids during their original release.
If you want more statistics, here’s another quick google, which shows the difference in participation between the different modes:

~50% LFR, ~30% normal, ~20% heroic and ~3% mythic with <1% cleared
For this specific black screen problem, you should be able to press F12 to bring up the logout menu, showing that the game is actually still functional. This problem can been caused by packet loss, including how your router handles traffic. You can rule out the router by directly connecting to the internet if possible, otherwise you’d need to experiment with the options it has available (disable firewall and UPnP).
As a potential simple solution however, start with: Gw2.exe -clientport 80
Hmm I think you got it backwards. If I recall correctly, the game went F2P before the release of HoT.
The core game did go F2P shortly before launch. In the months prior to that however, they stopped selling the core game and replaced it with HoT, which included the core game for free.
To be clear, their plan is to include all past expansions with the current one so they’re only selling a single box. If that hasn’t changed, when the next expansion is available for purchase, HoT will no longer be available as it will be included with it. Unlike the core game however, HoT will not be F2P.
Why is it such a terrible idea to you ?
Their reasoning for bundling it was to make it easier to get into the game, but HoT isn’t actually required to play through the next expansion so there’s no need to include it.
The obvious downside is that it’s going to cause complaints, just as bundling the core game did. Why go through the trouble of offering compensation when they could simply move HoT to the side.
The benefit however is that it’ll bring in more people, which is desperately need since HoT was designed for active maps. Making it F2P however would not only make it far more active, it would also be more profitable, assuming people buy gliders, plus they could break it up, selling the story separately for example.
Furthermore, it’s more than doubtful whether LFR or similar bullkitten benefits the more serious raiding community.
It’s unlikely to happen because raids are not the game’s focus, plus they had a very specific purpose, but LFR would mean a majority interest and thus warrant increased development. If participation is too low, ArenaNet’s simply going to cut resources, where you might see 1 per expansion and likely strung out.
I won’t even get started on the 1% …
https://eu.battle.net/forums/en/wow/topic/7860746695?page=2#post-36
I got the same probem to. Game is running fine with ping around 40 avg then it spikes up to over 1000.
You need to run a program like PingPlotter in the background to constantly ping the route in an attempt to show where the problem is. There’s nothing you can do however if the problem is between your ISP and ArenaNet, which it usually is. In that case, you can only try to avoid the problem by using VPNs to change your route.
You never say that this easy mode raids are what you want, you say that it what everyone wants.
An easy mode raid should be what everyone wants, except for those not wanting raids period.
Do you like raids? You should want to see an easy mode as it’ll greatly increase the participation and thus justify further development. There probably would have been a lot more dungeons today if they scaled for 1+.
See WoW. Raiding was originally less than 1% back in the hardcore days prior to WotLK. With LFR, raiding is now completed by the majority, where normal raiding is around 20% and hard mode progression raiding a fraction of that. The simple truth is, most people play for fun, solo and don’t want to waste their time. LFR is just that, where you simply queue up and win. If GW2 offered that, where you could earn the same rewards and just take 10x longer to earn them, it’d certainly be far more popular. To differentiate, actual raids could simply offer different cosmetics, like how SAB TM has colored weapons.
What happens is she will constantly spam her attack where the circles chase you around making it impossible to close the rift. This seriously needs fixing.
Keep spamming the rift. After enough ticks, it’ll just end. I’ve even had her continue attacking after it was done.
You get to the part where he says to take the shield yet it does NOTHING.
The shield seems useless, whatever it was actually intended to do, but the ability it gives you is spammable. If you hold down the button, it’ll constantly spam it and reflect some of the attacks. When it’s used however, the boss will do the same, going into his reflect/block stance, so it’s just a constant reflect spam on each other.
I just did this as a zerk ele and let me tell you even in zerk mode the HP of these summons as well as Mordy himself seems far too much.
Mordremoth feels like such a grind at first, with how little health you’re taking out, but the pace really picks up after you gain your friends. I’m guessing that was intended. It’s still very long though, compared to other bosses. I just did it on a p/p thief wearing zerker rares, and it took roughly 12 minutes for just Mordremoth, while Eir only took 3 and Canach took around 5.
The blighted NPCs during the fight have like a 90% damage reduction when they first spawn, to prevent you from killing them during their dialogue, which is a common stalling bug.
But, perhaps you could explain WHY there’s a penalty box?
It’s solo content. There is no penalty box when you do it solo.
The fight it taking place in the dream, so when you die, you’re supposed to be pulled out before your mind is shattered. Personally, I would have gone with the blighted mechanic, where a blighted NPC spawns on the dead of a player, which needs to be taken down and rifted to respawn them, the same way the NPC allies work.
The actual reason for it however is likely Migraine mode.
I don’t suppose you could explain how to set these fixes up to someone who hasn’t got a clue about any of this could you?
Right click your GW2 shortcut and select properties. Under the shortcut tab, you should see a target field with the path to Gw2.exe/Gw2-64.exe. At the end of the target, add (80 or 443):
"C:\example\Gw2.exe" -clientport 80
If you do not have a shortcut, locate Gw2.exe, right click it and select create shortcut or send to > desktop (create shortcut).
Hmm from what I understood it doesn’t work that way.
Free as in, buying the next expansion will give you access to HoT, just like how HoT included the core game for free, prior to it going F2P.
Their plan was to bundle all past expansions into a single box. I wouldn’t be surprised if that doesn’t happen however, as it’s simply a terrible idea. It doesn’t even make sense to include it, considering HoT isn’t actually required. It’d be more profitable to move it to the gem store or even make it F2P.
The other question is: should I wait a bit longer, considering a new expansion is about to be released? Also, when is it coming out? Couldn’t find a date…
In 3 months, season 3 will likely end and reveal the next expansion. HoT will likely be replaced at that point due to their 1 box model. HoT could actually be free right now if they do 5 months of refunds again.
I just want to finish the HOT achievement. Migraine is undoable nowdays. It’s annoying to be dependable of people to finish the story achievements, when it’s presumed solo content.
I remember back when they called the story achievements challenging solo content, but allowed groups to trivialize them.
Explain why everything in a game has to be catered to casual players? Is WvW casual? Is PvP casual?
The problem with the term casual is that is has multiple meanings, one being limited time, the other being effortless. GW2 was meant to be casual-friendly in the sense that your time wasn’t being wasted. WvW and PvP is casual in the sense that you can simply hop in and play.
Not everything needs to be casual, but the more content that isn’t, the more you’re going to lose. WoW’s solution to raiding was LFR, where you simply queue in and (eventually) win, which allowed raiding to tap into the majority and easily justify further development. GW2 was never intended for the majority however, as the solo difficulty is far above that of other MMOs, yet still more casual as there’s really no punishment for failing.

If you’re running any overlays, they can intercept your inputs. The sharing/shadowplay feature of NVidia’s GeForce Experience can cause this for example.
My favorite restaurant adding a new dish to their menu, while continuing to serve the dishes that are my reason for eating there, does not bother me. If I dont want to eat the new chicken dish I can continue to order my favorite steak dinner.
GW2 wanted to be different, so it’d be more like a vegetarian place offering meat, or a nice clean place adding a smoking section.
In a way, GW2 did lose its identity. GW2 was that MMO a lot of people didn’t know what to do with due to its lack of traditional concepts and having no endgame. Raiding changed that. For those that don’t follow the game, MMOs with raids are generally focused on raiding, so by simply mentioning raids, people will assume the game is a generic raid grinder. From the perspective of a guild from other MMOs however, it’s obvious why raids were added, as the lack of an endgame is why most people quit. When they returned to try HoT however, there was simply no point in raiding without vertical progression. Assuming ArenaNet was trying to target those players, but substituting vertical progression with legendary armor, I wonder if they’ll try again using actual progression.
I am in the same boat as you, next month the standard and deluxe version should be 50% off, I’ll be grabbing the standard for $25.
Keep in mind that there’s no guarantee that it’ll be 50% off next month. They were having the sale every other episode, which would have made it next month, but the last sale came an episode early, likely due to the double release.
Don’t wait and hope for the next xpac to have hot free, that’s still awhile away and HOT power creep is quite significant, hence why I am definitely buying it.
They have 3 teams working on season 3 and episode 1 (team 1, part 1) hit its finale with episode 4 (team 1, part 2), so there’ll likely be 6 episodes in total, ending in June. Like season 2, the end of season 3 will likely reveal the next expansion, and considering they wanted to cut the downtime, there likely isn’t going to be a year of marketing this time. If they repeat HoT, they’ll refund the previous 5 months of purchases and pre-purchasing will grant you access to HoT.
HoT could already be free if they offer refunds again, but only if purchased through buy.guildwars2.com. At this point, I recommend waiting 3 months for episode 6, as it should confirm the next expansion. Episode 5 next month could also be quite revealing.
Try running the game with:
Gw2.exe -clientport 80
Ascended is a very minor upgrade, the bulk of it being the weapons and accessories which are the easier to obtain pieces. In total, it’s roughly a 12% damage increase, where a set of armor by itself is only a 2% difference. You’d see a bigger change by using consumables.
Personally, I don’t bother gearing my alts, so they’re only wearing the rares the personal story provided. It doesn’t really matter what you’re equipped with, it’ll just take longer.
By the way: What’s with all this changing posts on preview and substituting kitten in place of perfectly spelt and scripted posts?
If a series of characters matches a bad word, they’ll replace it with kitten. For example, isn’t_it is isn’kitten
It’s an interesting concept, or at least it is to me because I’d been thinking for a while I’d like to see an RPG without any kind of level system and this is about 1/2 way there.
They originally didn’t want leveling in GW2, but ended up abandoning the idea because it didn’t feel right.
So you’re saying instead of multiple gifts each year, one per character there’d be only one birthday gift per account?
That would be one way of doing it, if they never had birthdays to begin with.
What I meant however was that the account itself would act as an additional character. It would be exactly as it is now, with your characters having their own birthdays, plus your account would also be treated as a character and receive one.
And then of course there’s my key runner who would be getting the upcoming 5th year present in spite of only being a few days old. That doesn’t feel right.
If they had account gifts, it’d be for the account, not every individual character. Imagine the current implementation, except the account itself was treated as a character.
There’s really no need for free players to buy the game. The gem store was always more profitable than box sales and free players can’t buy gems with gold. They’d likely be better off continuing in a F2P direction, where expansion #1 goes F2P with expansion #2. They could additionally break it up, selling optional features on the gem store, such as the elite specs or story, or a bundle containing it all with a permanent 25% mastery XP boost.
The living world should probably also change, where buying the expansion acts as a season pass, nulling the requirement to login. To incentivize buying the expansion early on, only the episodes from that point would be unlocked for free, though maybe buying direct should simply include them since ArenaNet has a higher price. If they want to continue being generous, episodes could still be unlocked for free by logging in, but only for paid accounts.
Try launching the game with (80 or 443):
Gw2.exe -clientport 80
Can you explain why a cut scene would require or trigger some kind of change in traffic flow that any router/firewall would notice? Can you explain why only the cut scenes from story lines are affected?
Throttling can come in various forms, but what I was referring to was pattern matching. It’s where they’re monitoring your connecting, trying to recognize what’s coming in and out. It’s like how the forums replace words with kitten, like isn’t_it, because it’s simple pattern matching.
When GW2 plays a cutscene, the server sends a message to the client telling it to play it, then the client tells the server when it’s finished. If that message is recognized as torrent traffic for example, your connection on that port will begin dropping packets as throttling kicks in. When the scene finishes and the client updates, the connection is likely already lost.
I’ve had this problem several years ago in another MMO, where throttling kicked in after I entered a PvP match. In my case however, I had to change IPs to fix it.
This leads me to believe it is an issue in the games implementation of cut scene content.
The problem could be with the game itself. Since changing ports seems to work however, the problem area would be limited to that difference. Since changing ports would likely be a simple number change however, it’s unlikely.
but it wasnt as steep as HoT.
But is it, really? Enemies deal more damage, but they have half the health. On one of my more recent runs for example, I did a zerker pistol/pistol thief in only rares where unload would instantly kill almost every enemy. Powering through the core game was legitimately more challenging, as in being in Cursed Shore at level 78 wearing level 60-70 gear (what’s provided).
How does traveling through VB compare to Southsun, which was GW2’s first true endgame zone. Southsun is full of veterans with retaliation and enemies dealing higher damage. For comparison, a smokescale is going to mow you down within their assault, but they have like 10k health. A reef drake in melee is going to kill you just as quick with their puddle of death while having probably 5x as much health.
Remember pre-nerf season 2, where the wolves had retaliation and high crit damage and the spinners had to be attacked from behind? The wolf packs were more deadly than anything in HoT, as their leaps would take out half your health and the retaliation would kill you.
The problem is that simply playing through the game takes you from Orr to the historical S1 video to HoT, and unlike launch, new players are going through Orr with better gear.
Now I find out that the “higher challenge” info tended to be in places that only very dedicated MMO players will look, so no, we should not have known before we bought HoT.
To be more realistic, they said the game was going to be more challenging in the details about the expansion.

The jungle represents a challenge for you to overcome. Creatures within it use our new advanced AI, making the fights you encounter harder, giving you the opportunity to work with your friends and put your abilities to the test in battling Mordremoth’s forces and the deadly inhabitants of the jungle. As you progress your Masteries, you’ll find new ways to move through the map and unlock areas you couldn’t reach previously, as well as new ways to overcome your foes.
For those simply playing the game, ArenaNet has increased the difficulty with every major content update. The difficulty has always been complained about, right from the first beta, or Orr at launch. Only those that started after the new player experience and stopped playing at the end of the personal story would have never known.

You can’t expect to get fun from soccer by just staying idly next to the goal.
You can’t aspire to get fun from crosswords if you take the answers from a dictionary.
You can’t demand to get fun from chess if you refuse to learn how to move the pieces, (Or if you are not willing to lose).
Some people find it fun to watch.
A dictionary isn’t going to help, but regardless, some find the simple completion of something fun.
You can play virtual chess without knowing how to play. I remember doing just that back in the days of Windows 9x at school, as it was one the few games available, plus word pinball.
If you have both an integrated and dedicated GPU, like a laptop, ensure the dedicated GPU is activating.
Restart the computer.
You can try deleting the folder %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/, which will reset your hardware-related settings.
If you want to play the game on hard mode, play in a +10 level area. To counter the damage reduction, play a condition build.
If you simply want a more active profession, try a scepter or dagger/dagger elementalist.
On the other hand, thanks to HoT abilities I am more capable of enjoying core GW2.
If you play through the first half of season 3, episode 4, you’ll unlock a new level 80 downed ability for your account that passively adds life leech to your attacks. It basically doubles your damage, can out heal enemies and since each outgoing hit will heal you, AoEs can instantly rally yourself.
Be hard for anet to set up a separate deal because conversion rates are always changing so they selling 800 gems to usa for $10 they’d have match all currencies to your countries conversion rate so you dont get ripped off so to speak just easier to keep it at usd standard charge everyone equally.
ArenaNet supports the EU, where the price of 800 gems will change to £8.5 or €10 depending on the selected country. For everyone else, $ is default.
Using the -clientport option seems to have stopped this problem for others:
Gw2.exe -clientport 80
A VPN should have had the same effect however, assuming GW2 was actually being tunneled through it. If changing the port stops it, there likely is a bug with it.
and Orr changed back to what it was originally (worse than HOT originally).
Reverting Orr to how it was would actually be a pretty big nerf to it. The original major nerfs were toning down the amount of enemies and changing some of the CC, most notably the Putrifier’s anchor pull. After that however, they buffed enemies by giving them new, far stronger attacks and Dwayna and Grenth were reworked and made much stronger. As a sample of the new attacks, abominations didn’t originally charge and nobles didn’t have marks. Basically every AoE attack didn’t exist at the start, as they were added to counter the zergs.
It only feels easier today because everyone’s geared, whereas back then, it was common to reach Orr in level 60-75 fine/masterworks with no accessories, since they were crafted, and backpacks didn’t exist.
Are you sure it’s not remembering your password? Is it remembering your email? The remembered password can be hard to see and will simply be displayed as ******
Gliding is handled client-side, which can be very dangerous. When a zerg is taking on Hablion for example and causing the server to lag, if I don’t let it land naturally, I always die to falling damage. Likewise, if you’re gliding towards land and the server thinks you landed, it’s going to disable your glider.
The ping shown under the options is a better indicator, since it’s your ping and the server’s processing time. Packet loss is also going to cause problems, which you can try to diagnose using the pathping command or a program like pingplotter.
WildStar, which did what you ask here, is => over there, happily failing into oblivion because it turns out that y’all ask for this harder stuff, but you don’t like it when you get it.
WildStar’s open world / solo content was balanced for the casual players, like most MMOs. The funny thing about it is that the endgame was entirely devoted to dungeons and larger raids, like how MMOs were 10+ years ago, then quickly found out the obvious, revealing that more than 60% played solo.
If it’s like last year, SAB will launch for April 1st and last until April 18th, which is where episode 5 will come in.
There are two different black screens you may encounter. If the entire screen goes black, your GPU is possibly failing or there’s a problem with the drivers. If only GW2 goes black, where the game is actually still running and you can press F12 to bring up the logout menu for example, it’s a problem that can be caused by packet loss.
You are going to have to explain and justify a port setting just for story mode cut scenes.
There have been cases where some routers/firewalls will block certain packets related to GW2, which can cause a black screen or a disconnection. The black screen problem at least is likely a bug, or a security measure. In other cases, throttling is likely the cause, where your ISP monitors your connection like an anti-virus monitors your files, and in the same way, false positives are a problem. When a certain pattern is detected, they’ll limit your connection, resulting in high packet loss which leads to a disconnection.
Using port 80 (web traffic) or 443 (encrypted web traffic) simply makes it less likely to run into problems as web traffic may be handled differently. Using a VPN to actually encrypt the connection is the next step.
Search the trading post for “minor rune” and slot them in your armor.
I can imagine walking up to the checkout counter at the grocery store, having the cashier ring up my purchase, take my money, and then tell me that the store would hold hold on to my selected items for a few days before allowing me to take them. A bit off putting IMO.
(that is how it works, when you place an order online and expect it to be delivered)
The content guide is the part of the UI that points to nearby objectives. By default, this includes the personal story, which merges the story UI into it. When you choose to disable the personal story, it only stops the content guide from pointing to the story and thus no longer merges it.
There is no way to disable the story UI for the original personal story, since it can’t be abandoned like the newer stories.
If ArenaNet actually fixed scaling so the zerg had to actually do the sloth’s mechanics, it’d likely always fail. It’s a much different encounter when you can’t out damage the heal and takes around 6 minutes. Whenever ArenaNet fixes scaling however, it’s usually a simple linear increase, making small groups that much harder. Scaling was not only designed to get easier with more, it doesn’t even factor that groups can easily double your damage due to boons, hence the problem of casual zergs.
Oddly, the destroyer is the opposite. With less people, to the point where extra champions don’t spawn, it’s actually faster to kill.
The jade is simply a skill test, where 1 person tanking it in melee range can make a huge difference, taking roughly 4 minutes to complete. It’s odd that this one and the karka doesn’t have a chest, especially when the wurm has one and it’s not even a group event.
They require players to develop strategies and utilize the abilities available to them to handle the mechanics in some way.
Not when you’re a high damage build. Shadowleapers for example might look special if you let them, but what they simply come down to is entering melee range and killing them before their first shot. I run trash alts through HoT in the downtime (random profession/build 1-80, only equipped in what the story provided, then delete) and the overall most deadly regular enemy has actually been chak zappers, simply because of their retaliation-like shield.
The trick about the core game is that vertical progression makes a huge difference. It’s not just your gear, but your level. The higher you are compared to your target, the more damage you deal and the less you take. If you only play in equal+ level areas and normalize your gear to that of the smith merchant, you’ll find that the enemies are capable of taking chunks out of your health while taking far longer to kill. Enemies are far less mobile compared to HoT, but they do have their own deadly attacks to watch out for. For example, a destroyer troll will easily kill you if you attack its fire shield, a risen carrier will/nearly 1 shot you if you let it, or the leap of a brood wolf can double hit in melee for devastating damage. As a simple comparison, the pirates in Gendarran or Bloodtide deal similar damage to the White Mantle in Lake Doric.
There are people who couldn’t play core Tyria solo either and complained about difficulty. Should we make the game easy enough for them? If we did, how many other people would leave.
Either some form of vertical progression should be added to allow players to casually play through older content, or the difficulty of the core game should be reverted to how it was in beta.
Just look at the people calling the core game easy for example. Why is it easy? Because they’re overloading on vertical progression to make it easy. Not only does HoT not offer any form of that, it’s also no longer balanced for low geared levelers, so suddenly they no longer have that crutch. Most MMOs are like the core game, where the difficulty is faked due to vertical progression, but that’s also what allows everyone to play through it. Here, those who can’t are expected to group up or quit.
The lack of a traditional experience can also be a major problem. New players simply following the story for example will end up in HoT wearing only rares with no upgrades or accessories. Traditionally, the first few quests would provide you with everything you needed.
If you’re buying HoT and have an existing account, you upgrade it under account.arena.net by adding the code.
If you already used HoT to register a new account, you can contact support to undo that, which will mean losing the newer account.
