Errors Downloading

Healix.5819

A connection error on the launcher like that means your connection dropped when trying to download files from the asset server.

Try using ArenaNet’s primary asset server:

Gw2.exe -assetsrv 64.25.41.2

If that has the same problem, you know the problem is with your connection. To rule out any other software causing it, open msconfig (WindowsKey+R), select the boot tab and check safe boot with network under it, then ok and reboot. Undo this later by unchecking safe boot. Under safe mode, try running the launcher.

To actually see what the launcher is doing, you can use the -log option. It’ll save a log file to %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/Gw2.log, which you can open in notepad. It’ll tell if your connection is simply dropping or if the patch files are corrupted, in which case a VPN is required.

Healix.5819

This isn’t a hardware issue.

It most likely is. Bad button contacts can cause the inputs to twitch, which rapidly spams mouse up and down events. Razer for example uses cheap components, so this is a common problem, though simple to fix by cleaning the contacts. You might not notice this in some games simply due to how they’re programmed, like using delayed input for example.

If you want to find out, setup a logger to record your mouse input.

Thoughts on decreasing waypoints

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Having too many waypoints is actually bad for the game, as they allow people to skip through it. The game will look a lot more alive with people running around and stopping to gather, help or whatever, which they would have skipped otherwise. The problem is that they made waypoints too convenient. Waypoints are actually supposed to work like flight paths in other MMOs, where you must first interact with one to use the grid. Imagine if you could only revive at the last visited waypoint.

Any update can break this game.

You can try a different server (Gw2.exe -assetsrv 64.25.41.2), but in a lot of these cases, the problem is the ISP, making a VPN required.

Rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe and it’ll simply install to its current folder.

The funny thing is, this was a bug in the old launcher, where it’d simply begin installing on some systems. I guess they couldn’t fix it so they simply went with the default Program Files.

Not sure why they don’t just make an actual installer. They’re having Gw2.exe double as the installer, meaning they’re making you download that ~30 MB executable twice. It’s why you can simply rename Gw2Setup.exe to Gw2.exe.

PvE enemies update

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

There is no need to make open world PvE more difficult because it is not suppose to be.

It actually is. Unlike other MMOs that try to appeal to the majority by making solo content trivial, ArenaNet has always been for the gamers.

The core game was actually heavily nerfed during the first beta in fear of losing players, as people were standing still and getting facerolled. HoT’s difficulty is actually a return to how the game once was, back when a level 2 Moa right out of the gate in Queensdale could kill you within its channeled flurry of pecks. An ettin for example could 1 shot you with its charged club attack. The obvious problem in trying to appeal to this audience however is that they will end up losing the average player, and without vertical progression, there is no alternative except for grouping up, which most people won’t want to bother with.

That’s most likely the problem. You’re going to notice a lot more pixilation, especially on bigger monitors. You can try experimenting with graphics enhancers to improve the look, such as reshade, sweetfx and gemfx.

Healix.5819

So you only changed the monitor? That means the problem is with the monitor itself. Try hooking it to your computer using the different cables it may have came with and if you have multiple DVI inputs on your video card, try them all.

It may be caused by a configuration option on the monitor itself. Some of those monitors have built-in effects like sharpening and gaming modes for a rawer experience. Press the button on the monitor and experiment with its settings.

It may be caused by the refresh rate. Try lowering it to the standard 60 Hz.

This is all assuming you’re seeing a grainy screen, which isn’t going to be visible in screenshots. If you were simply referring to the character preview for example, previews use low settings with aliasing off, so you can’t change that. You would have noticed this on your previous monitor unless it was a smaller screen. If this screen is much larger, you’re going to notice pixilation due to stretching.

No Flying Mounts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Considering mounts will forever change the game, but are locked to a non-required expansion, ArenaNet’s going to have a problem moving forwards. They can either try to avoid them or re-implement them. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next expansion is underwater or floating and thus underwater or flying mounts. Flying mounts would of course only be useable in specific areas.

The question will be different, if PoF maps do NOT have huge meta events, they will die when players finish their achievements and story there, then go back to HoT maps for the meta events.

I wouldn’t count on seeing the bigger split-group events like HoT. That design came out of season 1, which only worked back then because the content was temporary and always active. It quickly failed in HoT once the majority left, which turned it into LFG-only content. World bosses are still popular today because people can casually show up and play. Expect to see them continue in the style of the core game as they’ve done with season 3, where it’s all balanced for single groups of 3+. The split design only guarantees that it will eventually fail, since it’s not futureproof, when they could simply avoid the problem by having multiple objectives that don’t need to be completed simultaneously.

The only viable way to do events that require larger amounts of coordinated players and appeal to the majority is by splitting them from the open world. Put them in their own instance that you actually have to queue in to, meaning it’s always active, and is automatically set up with balanced teams for the multiple objectives. Simply put, make them activities.

HoT masterys in PoF maps

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

PoF could feature some of HoT’s masteries, but they would have to be entirely optional. You could either do a jumping puzzle or use an updraft, which they did in Bitterfrost for example to reach a vista. Some masteries are too specialized however, like most of season 3’s, and will probably never be seen again. Some will simply be redone, like how tubes are v2 wallows.

The problem with using HoT’s masteries however is that it’ll be confusing for those simply buying and playing through PoF. Some will also be mad about it, when they find out grinding through HoT is required to access shortcuts in PoF. The expansions after PoF are going to be the bigger problem however, because mounts are too big of a deal to ignore.

HoT isn’t required like WoW’s expansions are, so they don’t actually need to give it away. They’d probably lose more players if they did, since it’s such a difference experience compared to the core game.

It may change with 3rd expansion however. Either HoT will go F2P, the $50 bundle will include all expansions, or they’ll simply continue to sell each expansion individually.

Low FPS in all areas; PC exceeds requirements

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Disabling SLI had no difference on FPS besides shifting the GPU usage all onto one GPU. Bus speed of the GPU is normal.

GW2 does a lot of back and forth with the GPU. This isn’t something you’ll notice in most other games, but when the bandwidth of your GPU is being limited, it’ll effectively half your FPS. This can be caused by putting the GPU in the wrong type of slot or simply not seating it properly. In GPU-Z, the optimal bus interface is going to be PCI-E 3.0 x16 @ x16 3.0.

At 1920×1080 outside of the zerg, you should easily be able to get 80+ FPS on high settings in the core game, 120+ overclocked. Ensure shadowplay isn’t recording in the background and if you’re Windows 10, the same for the Xbox app recorder. Check your processes for anything else wasting the CPU and exclude GW2 in any anti-virus software. Rename Gw2-64.exe to Gw2.exe, simply for detection software.

The PoF Hero Point Dilemma

If they reset it, people would expect that every expansion and they might as well simply unlock the elites through the story.

They made hero challenges in HoT worth 10 points specifically because they didn’t want you to unlock the elites immediately. They wanted it to feel like you were progressing through the expansion, just as you would gain new abilities through leveling in other MMOs. If they want to keep doing that however, they’ll need to move away from generic hero points.

You can use the -log option to see what it’s doing, which saves to %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/Gw2.log. If the files aren’t going down, but it is downloading, then it’s downloading corrupted data. Ensure that any security/network/monitoring software isn’t manipulating your traffic. A quick way to test this is rebooting into safe mode with networking enabled (msconfig > boot > safe boot with network).

A VPN should have fixed any network troubles, so ensure GW2 is actually going through it and that you’ve chosen a VPN server in the US or something. You don’t want to use a VPN that’s going through the same network as you.

For the -assetsrv option, use -assetsrv 64.25.41.2, which is ArenaNet’s primary server.

Black screen, and tons of login issues.

in Account & Technical Support

Healix.5819

A black screen but still being able to access the menu is a bug. For whatever reason, when GW2 doesn’t receive a certain packet, it’ll do that. Unless you changed routers or firewall/network software since this started happening, chances are the cause is out of your control and only a VPN will help you. You could also try -clientport 443.

Since yesterday I have had some issues with the login where, frequently it did not accept my authentication code but would work after a couple tries.

If you’re using a (Google) authenticator, your time is probably out of sync causing the code to be invalid. It has a 30 second lifespan.

If you’re requesting multiple codes, it invalidates the previous.

Today I have had to change my password twice due to it not recognizing my password, despite my “current logins” showing the same IP I am normally on.

Remembered IPs only allows you to skip the authentication code. If your email/password combo is failing, either someone is changing your password or there’s something wrong with one of the login servers. You can try different servers using the -authsrv option and IPs can be found using the -diag option.

I’ve noticed after logging out, and back in (without a black screen crash) on certain characters it would put me in Lion’s Arch, just west of the Traders forum way point.

That is the default location when the game doesn’t know where you should be. It can happen by simply waypointing to a map then logging out for example.

3. If they make it 500 and 20 per challenge, how will we not end up in the exact same situation next expansion?

PoF would have 25 challenges at 20 points each for the 500 total. There wouldn’t be anything adding to the excess, so this would no longer be a problem moving forwards. This is what HoT tried to do originally by having 40 of them at 10 points each, but they made the mistake of making them group events and having too many of them.

They’ll probably just leave it as is at 10 per for 250 total. Although 500 is still only 25 challenges, the same as HoT, people will see the higher total and scream grind. The vast majority of players aren’t going to have the points to immediately unlock their elite anyways and the smaller total would lead to a better experience. The average player is only going to have around 40-100 points by level 80 and less than 10 after HoT. For the few that are able to unlock it immediately, ArenaNet can simply further gate the elite behind the story.

For a simple catch-all solution, they would just make hero points specific to the expansion. They could also do something completely different, such as offering 5 quests/challenges for the 5 utilities, like back in GW1.

Think about it this way: would it make sense, looking 2-3 expansions down the line, to have the elite specs cost 250, 350, 250, 250, etc?

It would be 250 for HoT, then 500 for all future expansions. HoT’s hero challenges were worth 10 points each solely because they didn’t want you unlocking the spec right at the start. It was balanced so that 100% completion was roughly 50% of the elite. If they want to try that again, they’ll simply double it, making it 20 points per challenge for a total of 500 for the elite.

Probably intentional. Expansions are supposed to bring more people in, whereas HoT lost more than it gained. They would want to avoid the major complaints.

GW2’s problem is the lack of a traditional leveling experience. In other MMOs, you’re provided with appropriate gear as you play through the quests, but here you’re expected to obtain it on your own. If you simply follow the story, you’re thrown into HoT with zerker rares, no runes and no accessories. It probably would have gone a little differently if they provided a set of defensive gear at the start, which they should go back and add to the original story so that this isn’t a continuous problem.

It doesn’t tell you the size because it doesn’t know. It knows the total size of the files, but that number is absolutely useless to you unless you’re downloading the game for the first time. Patches to existing files are a small fraction of that total, and this is where ArenaNet can’t know, since they allow you to patch from any version to the most recent. What they could do however is include an estimated size, but it’d only be valid for those who were up to date.

If you really want to, the total size can be discovered by downloading the headers of each file, which costs approximately 600 bytes per file. I already wrote an alternative patcher basically for this situation, which allows you to download patches manually from any computer, then feed them back into GW2. It’d be trivial to simplify down to only showing the size.

As someone who doesn’t know much about computers, this doesnt help very much.

That wouldn’t of helped you anyways. It was simply to find the cause of the problem.

The launcher getting stuck on specific files has been a problem for a while, and it’s usually in Australia. The only person I’ve seen try to debug it found that their ISP was injecting messages into their web traffic, which causes GW2 to download the same files over and over. This is why only a VPN will work, because it prevents outside sources from interfering.
