Keep GW2 different – it doesn’t need mounts.

With profits in decline since launch and HoT failing to impress investors, it’s really no surprise that they’d turn to mounts, which are probably the most popular item in MMOs. Just look at how easy gliders sell. Not only will mounts likely be more accessible, assuming they don’t screw them up by making them a gimmick, there’ll also be several types to buy skins for.

I tried the exe extensions listed here for NA, however I’m getting an error message saying that the target is not valid. Am I doing it wrong?

Shortcut targets need to be formatted like this:

"C:\Example\Gw2.exe" -assetsrv 64.25.41.2

Alternatively, you can simply open the folder containing Gw2.exe, append the following to the address bar and press enter for a one time run:

\Gw2.exe -assetsrv 64.25.41.2

I need it for OTHER Region not for US or EU….

There is no other region. You’re either EU or everything else (NA). There’s also China, but it’s basically a different game.

as of know (15:58 AMSTD.BERLIN.BRUSSEL. (+0100)) servers are still down.
The trick with the ip adresses remains unsuccesful

The servers have actually been up the entire time. The main issue was just that the patch servers were wrong. The other problem, the inability to login, is a general connectivity problem. You could use a VPN to get around that for example.

The first failed. The second showed the IP result, as it should.

Since your default DNS isn’t providing you with proper results, you should really switch.

See Google’s guide:

https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

Since you only saw a white page though, your connection may have been refused. Here’s the direct link to an image to verify http://64.25.41.2/welcome.png. You’d need to do a little debugging for further information if you can’t see the image.

As stated its a DNS server thats taking some time to update. Simply wait for an hour (yes yes, we all have the patience of a demented goldfish) and try again.

It could take up to 24 hours and Windows itself may cache the old records for that long, which can be cleared using cmd.exe:
ipconfig /flushdns.

But why wait? Simply force it by using the -assetsrv command. You can lookup the IP yourself using cmd.exe and Google DNS:
nslookup assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com 8.8.8.8

Is this somehow related now that Net neutrality boycot what most of largest operators and suppliers is doing today. They said that net connections may be very slow and doesn’t work equally, because they want to show how net will work if there is not net neutrality going on.

I saw reddit popup with net neutrality ads at around the same time as this started, so it could be, but highly unlikely as that would be a huge risk to screw over businesses by cutting their services. The original problem was that CloudFront couldn’t connect to ArenaNet’s servers for whatever reason. CloudFront itself was running fine, GW2’s origin server was fine and GW2’s other Amazon services were still up, so there was probably a configuration problem or an attack on the route between them. The fix they did was changing providers from CloudFront to CDNetworks, so something must have went wrong with CloudFront.

“This site can’t be reached

origincdn.101.arenanetworks.com’s server DNS address could not be found."

:-(

Search your start menu for and open cmd.exe. Enter the following:

nslookup origincdn.101.arenanetworks.com

It should either fail or show a IP result.

Do it again using Google’s DNS to compare:

nslookup origincdn.101.arenanetworks.com 8.8.8.8

The forums and that server are hosted in the same location, so either your DNS is wrong, or something is blocking you.

You could also visit the IP directly http://64.25.41.2/, which should show the IIS splash page.

I’m in NA and I have the same issue still. Futhermore, the assertsrv workaround didn’t work.

If you can access these forums, you can access the NA servers. You either did it wrong or have another issue, such as a firewall blocking it. You can verify your ability to access the asset servers by visiting http://origincdn.101.arenanetworks.com/, which should show “page not found” with a little info.

Do I have to change my DNS, Chris?

No, but it would probably be best since Google DNS is more up to date than what your ISP provides.

First you should try flushing your DNS. Open cmd.exe (search the start menu) and enter the following command:
ipconfig /flushdns

Alternatively, you can use the -assetsrv option mentioned throughout this thread.

None of this worked for me, maybe im odd as im in England (EU) playing in NA.

I’m assuming you can patch but can’t login? There’s likely a node down in the EU, preventing you from connecting to the login servers. You can tracert the IPs to verify, but you’d need to use a VPN to workaround that.

If you can’t patch, you wouldn’t be able to access these forums since they’re hosted in the same location. You can verify by opening this page, which should read 79243 etc.

Was warned about the workaround , be careful of info unless its from anet dev , ty

It really isn’t nice to use that IP, because it’s ArenaNet’s primary server. Use it as a workaround, but don’t use it permanently because it defeats the purpose of the CDN and only further stresses ArenaNet.

If you were just afraid of its legitimacy, here’s the domain:

origincdn.101.arenanetworks.com

Guess we will have to wait for actual fix from anet or use this one timer and dont turn off the game? xD

The current problem is that the CDN they’re using is basically down. Since GW2 can’t retrieve the build information, it’s reporting a connection error. 64.25.41.2 is ArenaNet’s own server and what the CDNs connect to. You’re not actually supposed to use this server as it defeats the purpose of the CDN.

You shouldn’t have any problems logging in if you can read these forums, for NA at least. EU goes through different login servers.

For NA, these should work:

Gw2.exe -authsrv 64.25.38.172 -assetsrv 64.25.41.2
Gw2.exe -authsrv 54.89.152.137 -assetsrv 64.25.41.2

EU requires different IPs for -authsrv:

206.127.146.73
206.127.146.74
206.127.159.109
206.127.159.107
206.127.146.67

Haha, any similar fix for the mac client? ;p

Not sure if still applies to the new client, but see the wiki on how to use arguments on Mac:

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Command_line_arguments

Alternatively, you can try modifying the hosts file to point assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com to 64.25.41.2

in Players Helping Players

Healix.5819

The game downloads the difference between what you have and what is currently available. It doesn’t know the exact size of the files until they’re requested, so in order to implement this, they’d have to first query the headers for each file. It’s certainly possible and easy to do, but it’s not important enough to double the amount of queries required. The size of the raw files is known ahead of time however, so it is possible to guesstimate it, but it will be very inaccurate.

If you’d like to see a sample of this, you can try my alternative patcher, which is intended for people who can’t afford the bandwidth and allows downloading patches anywhere without needing the game.

Do we have a firm date for the finale?

in Living World

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

how does that even make sense

How doesn’t it? Internally they have 3 teams working on 6 month schedules. Although they said that releases would be every 2-3 months, going over 2 months means it pushes the release of every other team back. Since team 2 took an extra month, that means team 3 was given an extra month to work with. If team 3 was finished within their 6 month schedule, the episode would have been finished a month ago and it only needed to be delayed to fit into the 2 month release cycle. With them continuing closer to 3 months, that means they will have taken an extra 2 months, so it should be the biggest or most problem-free episode to date, but this is likely just ArenaNet stalling for the expansion. Assuming they want to do a big event again, Gamescom begins August 22 and PAX the following week, so they’d likely want to lessen the gap to one of them, which is now down to 5 weeks at the earliest release.

Something will likely be revealed this week, whether it be the trailer or MO announcing it’s going to take closer to 3 months since it’s the big finale. If they do take the full 3 months, they could reveal the trailer on August 1st, making the release only 2 weeks prior to Gamescom, though it’d be much easier for them to make the main event PAX, since they’re next to it.

The episode should have been finished weeks ago considering they’ve had an extra month due to the previous episode (they have 3 teams on 6 month schedules). The problem is, they’re having to wait on the expansion, whether they’re waiting for a big event or it simply not being ready. Gamescom begins August 22, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re planning on revealing it there. The final episode of season 2 was only 11 days prior to HoT’s reveal at PAX, so they may continue to delay this one all the way up to August 15.

It’s just an honest question, GW2 boasted the fastest selling MMO ever, yet they quickly laid off staff, took 3 years for an expansion, and then give us a TINY bit of new content once every 3 months or so.

ArenaNet has been constantly hiring since launch and are bigger now than they were originally. It took so long for an expansion because the living world was originally meant to be the alternative to expansions. Now that they’ve committed to doing expansions, you can expect to see one roughly every 1.5 years, as their plan is to run them back to back with the living world on the 2-3 month schedule.

Healix.5819

ArenaNet will probably redo the system sooner than later. Just imagine what the future will be like if nothing changes. Do they really expect people to go back and get all the achievements from HoT years later? Think about how long it’d take to catchup as more expansions are released. They’re trying to avoid the issue by not reusing masteries, but I can’t imagine them doing that forever. They’re re-implementing gliding for example as a mount, but mounts are such a big deal (assuming they’re actually mounts) that I doubt they’ll be able to brush them aside with the next expansion. They could however do what everyone hates and make you relearn it every expansion.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they take the simplest route and just cut the mastery points. Since they can’t actually remove them however, the simplest option would be making them worth 100k XP or whatever, then adding that much to the XP requirements.

For everyone else, simply wait one month for the next expansion. This sale doesn’t make HoT only $13, it’s $13 more since it won’t be eligible for a refund.

question to dev's about game engine

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Errr…. why are you comparing an OC cpu to a stock one.

The point was that it was disappointment. After 7 years, comparing both at stock speeds, the top single threaded benchmarks were only 30% better than what I was using. For comparison, 7 years ago was when I last upgraded, which was around a 600% increase. Single threaded performance hit a limitation, so until DX12 and the usage of at least 4 cores becomes common, there was simply no point in upgrading, especially when I could still manage 80 FPS in GW2. Most people are also not going to OC, so I was also showing that a 7 year old CPU was just as good.

Those 10 core cpu are not marketed for gaming. They are marketed to those who use avx instructions and workstations.

People who don’t know what they’re doing may think the latest and greatest is better, but they can actually end up being weaker than a much older model.

question to dev's about game engine

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

This is utterly wrong. First off you’re not specifying which processors, but in general it’s wrong.

For gaming, single threaded performance is what matters. The more cores a CPU has, the weaker they are individually. People who don’t know what they’re doing may think the latest and greatest is better, but they can actually end up being weaker than a much older model. The new 10-core i9 CPUs for example are weaker than last year’s equivalent i7 4-core models. Its power is in the extra cores, which has no impact on gaming.

Personally, I have a ~7 year old i7 2600k OCd to around 5 GHz that failed about a year ago. When I went to look for an upgrade at the time, it was very disappointing to see that the most optimal CPU for GW2 (i7 4790k) at stock was actually a downgrade and was only 30% better when comparing both stocks. I didn’t bother upgrading and instead worked around the problem, so now I’m running a 3-core slightly underclocked 2600k and am still managing ~80 FPS normally and ~25 FPS at world bosses, which for comparison is down ~20-40 FPS.

My question is could the game be moved to a newer engine while retaining all the items.

It’s possible, but it’ll never happen. It’d take several years to accomplish, so unless they’re planning on releasing expansions for at least 10 more years, they’re far more likely to start from scratch with GW3.

question to dev's about game engine

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Because this is ridiculos a 5 or 4 year old game that runs on a engine that cant be played by the rigs of nowadays is lame im sorry but thats the cold turth i allways loved to play WvW but having all the fps breaks lag on the current day’s it aint good.

CPUs hit a limitation, so instead of becoming more powerful, they’re adding more cores. Today’s 8+ core CPUs are actually weaker than CPUs from 5+ years ago. They’re only better at multitasking and only a few games are actually optimized to use that many cores.

GW2 is using DX9, which makes it limited to waiting on a single core. It doesn’t matter what your total CPU usage is because only that 1 core running the primary thread matters. GW2 is already optimized for what it is and will never see any major improvements outside of a complete engine remake, which simply isn’t going to happen until maybe GW3.

Amazon cloud or not, the account data will have a primary location for its storage. There is latency between the primary locations (currently limited to one in Germany for EU and one in Texas for NA) and ANet hasn’t figured out how to sync the data quickly enough to allow people from different regions to play with each other.

Updates to your account data is stored in the map instance, which is why when the map crashes, you lose the last few minutes. If the HoT maps are actually running on Amazon, it shows they’re already taking the risk of running remote instances, which has the potential for data loss when the connection between them is lost. Cross region play was always possible with the same risk and is something they’ve already done in GW1.

There certainly won’t be something like WvW or even single map instances for Australia, but the potential is there now more than ever. The goal of this experiment is likely only to gauge its power, which could potentially reduce server lag under stress and open up more complex possibilities, including higher caps.

ANet’s done a lot with their server tech, but they haven’t figured out a way for accounts in different data centers to play together (due to the same latency issues that frustrate your gameplay).

Some instances of the HoT maps in NA appear to be running out of Amazon’s cloud. If you use /ip on these maps, you’ll see a private class internal IP starting with a 10, whereas normally you’d likely see a 64. If these instances are actually running on Amazon’s servers, it opens the potential for separate instances in various locations, wherever Amazon has their servers. However, they’d still need to justify the renting cost.

They did change CDN providers recently, but in this case…

HoT appears to be running on different servers, specifically Amazon’s EC2 cloud service. Using /ip on these maps returns their private local IP, whereas -maploadinfo shows the actual remote IP. It could just be a pass-through, but if they’re actually running HoT on Amazon’s servers, they’re likely testing its potential / cost.

Mounts may be convenient for those in a hurry, it also has the side effect of shrinking the maps (time actually seeing what the map has) and making the world seem smaller.

With waypoints everywhere, people are skipping through the maps. Not only does it make the world feel small, it makes the world feel dead. Imagine for example a new player in Queensdale and how different it would be if you could actually see the 100 people streaming out from the city and heading towards the world boss. Perception is the key in MMOs. It’s no surprise that they’ve been toning down waypoints in favor of alternative methods of travel.

No it doesn’t, it’s just a ritual that people who don’t understand the whims of RNG perform.

Without knowing how the RNG is coded, it’s impossible to say. You are more likely however to see a wider range of values from simultaneous attempts in quick succession the worse the algorithm is.

Some MMOs don’t actually have random loot and instead rely on the random order of players. For example, the rare roll will always occur on the 100th looted item.

Buy HoT or Wait for Expansion?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Back when HoT was announced, they revealed that they would bundle all expansions together and only offer the latest one, just as the core game was bundled into HoT.

If you want to assume that’ll still happen, do not buy HoT from 3rd parties, as it’ll essentially be a waste of money unless you want to gamble on what the bonuses will be. For example, owning the core game granted you an outfit and a free character slot for pre-purchasing the expansion. The expansion should be revealed shortly after the final episode, which should be released within the next month. Although the expansion certainly won’t be out for several months at the very least, pre-purchasing will likely be made available within the next 2 months. If ArenaNet repeats how they handled HoT, anyone purchasing HoT directly from the store at this time will be refunded upon purchasing the next expansion. This is why 3rd parties are a waste of money, as they’ll receive the potential bonuses instead of a refund.

If you just want to buy HoT right now and don’t care about the refund, it can currently be found for $15.

Since you said the cursor is still visible, I’m assuming you can minimize GW2 and the computer is still running normally. In this scenario, you should be able to press F12 in-game to bring up the logout UI, showing that the game is actually still running, just with a black screen. This is caused by packet loss. For whatever reason, if GW2 misses a specific packet, it’ll stop rendering the screen.

Sometimes routers are the problem, but if you’re suffering from random packet loss, there’s not much you can do yourself except for trying a VPN. To rule out the router, a simple test is connecting directly to the internet if possible, otherwise you’ll need to configure your router to disable its firewall, UPnP, all non-essential features and DMZ your computer, but don’t permanently do this as it’ll open you to the net.

Trailer date speculations [ep6]

Healix.5819

The episode should be ready to go at any time. They’ve already had an extra month due to the last episode, since they have 3 separate teams working on them. What they’re doing is limiting the downtime, so it’s not about this episode, it’s about when they plan on launching the expansion.

The trailer could still be next week. They’ve worked around holidays before by releasing days earlier or later. They would only do this however if they wanted to launch the expansion earlier, like in September. They’ll likely take at the very least a 2 month break for marketing, though 3-4 is more likely.

Considering the next big convention is Gamescom at the end of August, I wouldn’t be surprised if they announced that the final episode is going to take closer to 3 months again. Doing that would place it only 2-3 weeks prior to Gamescom, which should be enough time to ensure that people have finished the episode, maybe 4 weeks.

Edit: On top of that HoT was a season pass for me, since I have all five episodes of the living story unlocked and I haven’t paid a single cent for any of them.

HoT should have been a season pass, rather than giving it away to even F2Pers. It would have easily justified the price as well as buying it early and bundling it with the next expansion, whereas their 1 box model has only discouraged people from buying HoT for the last several months. They could have kept HoT at $50 the entire time and simply included season 3, or tricked people by lowering the price but not including any missed episodes. Including season 3 however would have been nicer for other retailers, since that $15 copy of HoT you’ll still be able to find, which is only good for cheap login rewards, would still have the value of season 3.

The only reason they do it the way they do is because activity is the most important thing in an MMO, especially when you rely on an in-game store. It’s probably also why they make everything group content, since it’s best played on release.

Papaya expansion should include new mastery systems and mastery features of HoT on its maps (otherwise is illogical). But designing every map around person with HoT and without HoT is kind of pain in the back (even more with further expansions).

It’ll have masteries, but masteries were originally meant to be expansion-specific, so anything from HoT shouldn’t be used again. If they do want to use gliding again, they could just do it like other MMOs where the new content requires you to relearn it. From the leaks however, we already know that jumping mushrooms for example have been replaced with jumping mounts.

So there would be no standalone papaya expansion, there would be package HoT + papaya with the discount for current HoT owners. But this way is unexpected and would create a lot of drama.

That is their plan, which is the same as how HoT was done. Their reasoning for doing it that way however doesn’t apply, since HoT shouldn’t actually be required for the next expansion. Using their logic, the living world should also be included. Their 1 box model is just a lie – you don’t pay for the expansions, but you do have to buy every season individually and at a fixed price, making it far more than the traditional model.

Looking back, the bad press HoT got for this was actually the first time I saw GW2 on the front page of some gaming news sites, so I guess that’s their real reasoning. All press is good press, right?

Ascended gear was meant to take months to acquire for a minor stat boost. If you think it’s going to suddenly make HoT easier, it’s not going to make a difference. Weapons and accessories are the biggest benefit and much easier to acquire, whereas armor is harder and only around a 5% difference. If you’re actually trying to farm specific materials, the game wasn’t meant to be played like that. Simply play the game and buy what you need off the trading post.

Ascended accessories can be casually acquired in season 3; episode 3 being the easiest. Some ascended weapons can be acquired from playing HoT’s follow up story, which requires finishing HoT’s final story.

I get around 12 – 23 fps in LA.

At what, high settings with max model limit and quality? You should only be going that low with ~100 people on screen. For comparison, I have a slightly underclocked (damaged) i7 2600k and I get 30-50 in LA at the bank with ~20 people around, on high settings with aa off, v-sync off, and medium model limit and quality. It only goes down to 20ish in a zerg at a world boss.

A common problem for low FPS has been the GPU not running optimally due to being in the wrong slot. Use GPU-Z to confirm the bus speed, which should be x8 2.0 or higher. If you happen to have to an integrated GPU, confirm that GW2 isn’t using it instead.

The problem is, people abuse it by wasting space, resources, spying, etc. Hardcore WvWers however were always going to buy secondary accounts to do so, but now free accounts allow anyone to do it. Most people are lazy however, so it’d definitely be more common if you could simply switch.

They should have gotten rid of locked server a long time ago. It’s simply a bad idea, where new players wanting to play with their friends have no reason to play, but I hear support can make exceptions. They could have based it on guilds, but the guild’s faction/server selection would need to an RNG lottery and done every season and players would have to do the same. What if instead of multiple groupings, they just had the 3 factions and one big world, whether it was through overflowing or by permanently multiplying the maps (ie, NWSE EBG)?

Story Disconnection, possible fix

in Living World

This issue has been ongoing for a number of years. Different ISP’s. Different Cable boxes. Different Routers. Different motherboards with ethernet. Different ethernet cables.

Unless you’ve been moving around the world, you’re still going through the same networks. It doesn’t matter who your ISP is, they’re all going to eventually meet and any node along the route could be the point of failure.

Also, it only happens during Storyline instances. Doesn’t happen any other time.

Other people with the same problem have had success by changing the game’s port to 80 or 443 by running the game with:

Gw2.exe -clientport 80

The other option is using a VPN.

Personally, I had a the same problem in another MMO several years ago whenever I entered a PvP match. It was due to my ISP throttling the connection, which causes heavy packet loss. In short, they were flagging the game as torrent traffic and killing the connection.

The instance should have a timer, 5 minutes would be best, allowing the player to log back in.

People have been complaining about this since GW1, which had the feature added about a year after launch. The last time ArenaNet commented on it here, they basically said it was too complex. They have been trying however, but it only works in the open world; you have a ~10 second window.

For the story, they have been experimenting with checkpoints, which allow you to continue from the last completed step. Season 3 with Aurene in Tarir was the first to do this. I wouldn’t count on them adding checkpoints to old instances, but they might be a thing in the near future.

Group it is, then, thanks! I left out of my “obvious” list watch for the tells. I just keep running out of dodge and room at the very end. I never had trouble seeing the doom coming at me.

Personally, I accidentally got that achievement simply by staying mobile. It’ll apparently never hit you if you’re constantly strafing away.

I’d love any advice on avoiding ever getting chilled (beyond the obvious keep moving and use dodges at the right time). Would going in with 4 friends so I can just avoid getting iced while they dps the boss help?

It has a ~0.5s warning. Watch for the animation. Alternatively, join a group and AFK in the corner.

The story achievements were originally revealed as challenging solo content, so you should expect them to be annoying. Alternatively, you can just group up and casually do them.

For this one, I just agrro’d all the adds and hid behind a pillar to gather them all together, then moved to the opposite side to get them in the middle.

On top of that, why is there no option to just SKIP TO THE BOSS?

After completing the instance once, there’s a brazier at the start that skips you to the final boss.

Chances are, the ability to reconnect is never going to happen. People have been complaining about this since GW1, which had the ability added a year after launch. They have however at least tested the idea of checkpoints, giving you the ability to continue a story instance from the last checkpoint. The one involving Aurene in Tarir for example supports this. They certainly wouldn’t go back to add checkpoints, but this is someone you may see in the future.

Yes, I only get dc’ed during dialogues! A few weeks ago it happened to me 3 TIMES A ROW during the Queen Jennah one (season 3, ep 4)! I got so annoyed, I didn’t touch story for a while…

If you are only disconnecting during the story, try running the game on port 80 or 443:

Gw2.exe -clientport 80

There is a specific problem that can cause you to be disconnected during cut scenes specifically and changing the port seems to fix it for some people.

Manual or forced waypointing is not the solution, because while old maps have alot of waypoints, the new ones don’t and the forced vertically also means that it can take literally 5-10 minutes just to get back to an encounter, assuming you have the neccessary masteries to do so at that. And I suspect this will only get worse over time, as players have been begging for less waypoints for years in order to create a more challenging game that doesn’t allow WP zerging encounters.

Having too many waypoints is actually bad for the game because it takes people out of the in-between areas. A lot of MMOs use flight paths for example, which take a while to get around. Although people like to complain about them, they makes the world feel bigger and look more alive since both sides have the opportunity to see each other.

They’ve been toning down waypoints to get you used to the idea. Notice how they’ve been using alternative methods of travel, such as gliding and tunnels? It’s only to going to get worse with the next expansion; in short, mounts.

As for reviving, simply bring back the revival shrines from GW1. They would essentially be a waypoint that you could only see when dead and you’d only be able to choose either the closest one or whichever you passed by last. There’s also no reason why they couldn’t have event-specific waypoints and could even have objectives to optionally set them up.

Even if it’s only to stop the interact button from working on dead people it’s a good start. Not solving all problems obviously but it does help a bit.

Take it a step further and simply disable the interact range, meaning you can only revive a dead player if you specifically target them. It doesn’t actually need to be out of combat only. There needs to be a fix for dead players griefing other interactable objects in all scenarios.

Another solution: disable revive of dead people while in combat just like in WvW. Now there is no reason for dead people to wait for a revive anymore.

The only benefit of disabling revivals is to prevent them from interfering with the interact button, like how the dead grief adventures. Dead players are mostly AFKers, so they don’t care, they’re just going to lay there until the end. The smart ones don’t even participate, they just tag the boss then go do something else. If they want to stop that behavior, the game needs a contribution meter that is more than just hitting the boss once.

They should have made big bosses separate events. Imagine how much easier it would be if world bosses were like activities that you could simply queue into instead of having to plan your day around. Reviving could have worked like PvP, where either someone could help you or you’d be auto revived at a set point.

For events as is, bring back revival shrines to auto revive people every 60 or whatever seconds.

I thought the Devs stated that defeated characters did not count in scaling long ago.

That was long ago. It’s no longer true today. Originally you actually had to actively hit the boss to be factored, which allowed larger groups of people to kill bosses before they could actually scale. Late into season 1, they fixed that problem by simply factoring everyone within the event’s area, including the dead.

Tengu can still make it as playable race

I think the whole notion of Tengu being a playable race is a joke, at best.

Tengu was actually one of their original candidates for playable races.

I believe Largos would be a much better time investment for ArenaNet, and would allow much more customisation options (despite the issues with their wings and backpieces).

Largos would certainly be the cheapest to implement. They’re just colored humans and they could even cut the wings by revealing that they’re actually a part of their suit, making them only backpacks. Voices are the biggest problem, but ArenaNet could potentially get away with morphing one of the existing voices. I wouldn’t count on seeing any new races however.

When I patch other games they process the files the same way, as most generally do, and it maintains the normal speed I get.

They don’t. Simply put, GW2 is optimized for reading, but at the cost of writing. It would be a lot faster if they just dumped the files into a folder. GW2 saves space by storing everything in a single file and further compressing its contents.

So essentially the high amount of traffic lately is what’s causing my router to die?

If it’s an older or cheaper router, probably. Older routers have limited memory and can only handle around 100 active connections at a time. Cheaper routers can have the same problem or can simply be unstable.

If it’s newer, it’s more likely to be a problem with its firmware. It could be trying to process a malformed packet for example and crashing because it doesn’t know how to proceed. If you can reliably cause the router to crash, try disabling the router’s firewall (not something you want to do permanently) and UPnP.

And by all of this traffic and how Anet sets up their patches, I’ll almost always get much slower results?

Yes, GW2 is always going to be slower and the biggest slowdown is because it’s downloading hundreds of smaller files. You simply can’t download at higher speeds when the files themselves are less than a few KB. Actually requesting the files is the slowest part and you’ll notice the same problem if you tried to download thousands of files in your browser.

The fact that a VPN is the only solution implies that your ISP is manipulating your connection. This asset server for example is the primary one, so it shouldn’t have any problems:

It’s not nice to use this server:

origincdn.101.arenanetworks.com
64.25.41.2

You can use “Gw2.exe -log” to see what that last file is, then attempt to download it through your browser to see what’s happening. The log is located at %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/Gw2.log. In it, you should see something like patch failed for 0×00073b8b:0×00000000 -> 0×001a0f96. The last two numbers are the important ones, 0×00000000 being the baseId and 0×001a0f96 being the fileId. Open up the Windows calculator, set it to programmer, select hex and paste the numbers, stripping the 0x beforehand. 001a0f96 for example is 1707926, while the other is just 0. The url for that file is:

http://assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com/program/101/1/0/1707926

Open it notepad to look for any obvious signs (injected HTML code), otherwise you’ll need to download it through the VPN and compare the files.

Alternatively, my launcher has a proxy server built into it, which will allow you to view the files being downloaded. It’s straightforward to setup, you just need to enable the proxy server (right click > tools). Or you could try my patcher, which allows you to manually download patches.
