The most dangerous Mordrem Guard are the commanders, specially created to be the jungle dragon’s elite fighters. There are three unique commanders active in Maguuma, each with its own individual look, weaponry, and set of terrifying magical attacks. Worst of all for Pact forces, Mordremoth has an inexhaustible supply of all three Mordrem Guard commanders; when one falls in battle, the jungle dragon simply creates a new one with the same look, same name, and same deadly abilities as the one it replaced.

from a lore perspective, there’s a pretty easy way to make it lore friendly…

and personally, unique skins and legendary materials and junk is enough of a reason for me to re-run it (we already re-run dungeons just for the sake of gold)

I don’t fully understand the raid concepts in other games like WoW so I won’t comment on the other things you are suggesting

A decent shout build

in Ranger

Posted by: ITheNormalPerson.9275

ITheNormalPerson.9275

I’m not a big writer, so I’ll keep this fairly short.

What with druid coming (eventually…) and my desire to get good at every aspect of the ranger (I recently started running dungeons!) I decided to try some new builds and such, instead of just taking the meta and suiting it to my needs.

Thus, I came up with this build. I have no clue how decent it is compared to the meta, but I definitely enjoy playing it, and in my MMR, I think it fairs pretty decently (especially compared to my last build, which was a tankier version of the Read the Wind build)

Anyways, here’s the build. http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNAQRAsf3YnUqA9CitCCWsActgBMhyX8F4x/bYyj8eZ70AokddA-TJxHwAOLDY4JAob/BAnEAA

Pros

  • A buttload of healing. a near-constant 358 HP/s (as well as providing a near constant 242 HP/s to allies in teamfights)
  • Lots of evades as well. that, mixed with the healing adds up to good survivability
  • Very good sustainability. Personally, in my MMR, i’m able to knock bunker builds like D/D ele, Bunker and Medi guards, etc. off points relatively easy
  • Also, while not necessarily a pro, I’d like to point out that the pet does pretty awesome damage. It easily makes up for 50% of my damage, even with poor pathing and such.
  • You can evade the entire damage output of the warriors “Rampage” elite, and then win the fight afterwards (which is pretty helpful in todays meta, at least in my MMR)
  • I’m not exactly sure how weakness, protection, and bark skin stack, but let’s say the game just adds up the percentages (I don’t think it works that way though) it would add up to a potential 91% reduced damage while at max health (25% from weakness, 33% from protection, and 33% from barkskin)

Cons

  • No stunbreaks. in 1v1s you can easily make up for this with evades, but in group fights, it can be a problem, especially if rampage as one is on cooldown (I like to keep SoTW for specific situations, mostly securing stomps.)
  • Can have trouble against condi-heavy builds, especially if your pet is dead. (however I’d like to point out that against something like burn guards, you’ll have no problem, as the shouts are more than enough to be near-constantly cleansing a single condition (burn))
  • While not exactly a con, this build requires you to manage your pet, and a lot of your dps is reliant on your pet. this doesn’t bother me, but i know a lot of rangers hate their pet (poor pets )
  • Not many CC’s. it doesn’t matter too much, and the other things this build provides makes up for it in my opinion. just added for the sake of pointing it out.

With that in mind, from personal experience, I’ve found that this build does well against certain builds/professions, and against others… not so much. Keep in mind that I in no way consider myself a “pro mlg esports” kind of player, and I have no clue what my MMR puts me against, so your mileage may vary (also this is with 1v1 trying to hold/cap a point in mind, which isn’t always the case in pvp)

Is really good against

  • Warriors. while they have a lot of CC, and you don’t have much when it comes to stunbreaks, their CC’s are heavily telegraphed and easily evaded. and if worst comes to worth, rampage as one is always there as well. Their damage is also typically easily evaded.
  • D/D elementalist. This is a big one for me. as of me starting to use this build, I’ve never had a hard time against D/D elementalists. with your shouts you can easily out-cleanse their burning, and evade most of their major tells. In my personal experience, it feels like this build actually has better attrition, and I can typically decap a point an ele is on within 30-60 seconds it feels.
  • Thiefs. Sic’ Em OP. but seriously, you can easily cap a point and hold it against a thief without worries. with Sic ‘Em and this builds conditions, this build can easily force them off point, and in some cases, kill them when they try to run away (it’s especially funny when they hide behind a nearby rock and try to stealth, just to have your pet kill them.) Taunt also works fairly well for forcing them out of shadow refuge (and you can use “Gaurd!” to force your pet to stand in the SR. who’dathunkit!)
  • 1v2 scenarios. As previously mentioned, I have no clue what my MMR is, so your mileage may vary. However, in my experience, I’ve found 1v2 to be fairly easy in most cases. Multiple times in a single day, I’m able to effectively hold a point 1v2 for minutes on end, without worry of dying.

Isn’t great against

  • Necros. the pure amount of different conditions they apply are quite a pain to cleanse, and your pet can easily die if you aren’t careful. I find myself generally being on the defense against them, and I rarely try to contest a point a necro is on, if it’s 1v1
  • Mesmers. the daze-lock is real. they can be pretty challenging to fight, however it’s not the end of the world, and you can decap enemy points 1v1. my advice would be to focus on evading and let your pet attack them. if you do that, their confusion is MUCH less painful.
  • Engineers. I haven’t really faced too many of them 1v1 for some reason, but when I do, they’re generally difficult to kill, and if you aren’t careful, they can decap a point your holding pretty quickly. I recommend playing defensively, being prudent with your shouts(cleanses), and popping RaO if you think they want to decap.

Wow, that went on a lot longer than I expected. Anyways, as a disclaimer, by no means do I consider myself a super good theory-crafter, nor am I saying this competes with meta builds or is something to run anything other than solo-queue. It’s just something I’ve been running that I’ve had relative success with and I wanted to share with you guys. If anyone has any suggestions for improving the build or has any constructive criticism, feel free

P.S. attached is about the stats that you can normally see in a game. note that you can definitely get more/less damage/healing, it varies quite a bit depending on where you are in a particular match (more damage if you aren’t being focused, more healing in teamfights, etc.) note that the match I attached was a match I actually lost, 500:425. so it was a fairly even fight, so in no means is it the stats of a faceroll kind of match.

Let us make child characters!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ITheNormalPerson.9275

ITheNormalPerson.9275

It seems like it’s doable, since in Tera you can make child characters. The difference is, they have long animal-like ears. In the Korean version, they can even wear skimpy armor. So it’s not like it’s not allowed.

I could make one with an Asura, but they are ugly.

fyi, as mentioned a bit above, they aren’t actually children, they’re ancient spirits.. that doesn’t get rid of the fact that from the waist up they look like kids though :P

I don’t think it’d be a good idea though. if anything, it’d probably drive the esrb up to M which I doubt anet would want to do.

for me, it’s collecting. I love collecting stuff. And tbh, the only problem I have with collecting stuff in gw2 is that a lot of junk is unnattainable now, and a lot of it is simply buy it off the tp or buy it off the gemstore.

A good example of collecting to me would be the daedric artifacts from skyrim. each has a unique flavor quest to it and such that makes it enjoyable and not repetitive to collect. I would rather have that than “do silverwastes for a few hours” “buy item off TP”

Thoughts on Stronghold

in PvP

Posted by: ITheNormalPerson.9275

ITheNormalPerson.9275

@genoshock, I didn’t notice it not rallying from player kills honestly. I do agree though, it probably should.

@style I kind of agree, in the sense that I’d like it to be like MOBA’s in that creeps are important for advancing, but whether creeps advance is up to the players pushing/defending

@abclemons I honestly found the heroes a bit subpar. they basically just felt like giant meat sponges to me. potent enough that you couldn’t ignore them, but not enough that they were top priority. I’m not sure though I haven’t seen them enough to decide

And yes, my build is heavily focused around immobs and kiting, which lends itself well to this map. I enjoy that I can run this rather than either a glass dps build or a sustain bunker build to be viable

Thoughts on Stronghold

in PvP

Posted by: ITheNormalPerson.9275

ITheNormalPerson.9275

I actually enjoyed it.

I liked that I could use builds that aren’t designed around points, and I found running defense entertaining, even if I didn’t get to see their lord go down.

Speaking of which, that feeling when you stomp the opponents lord is really nice.

And speaking of lords, I enjoy that the lord retains it’s hp state after it goes ooc, so a wipe doesn’t necessarily mean restarting completely, and I don’t feel forced to rush the lord in an attempt to keep it in combat.

I do want to say that the archers and trebs felt a bit subpar though. I really wish the treb did a bit more damage against npcs. as for archers, I just feel like they don’t have much use when a player can fill the role of them much much better. I’m not sure what change I would like, but I do wish archers were more impactful.

I’m generally not one for feedback on the forums, but with all the people trashing it, I felt like it’s the least i could do.

tl;dr: it has it’s problems but overall I think it’s pretty cool.

You can fight higher level mobs? I would like to do that in GW2 because that’s what I do in Tera and I love this play style. I can kill mobs that can kill me in one hit, as long as I don’t get hit at all. I can’t find that type of combat in GW2. I always get hit in GW2. The dodge in GW2 is use to dodge big attacks, not all attack. Dodge in Tera and MH can dodge every single hit.

I can’t do that in GW2 for most of the mobs. As an ele, I can only take 2-3 hits from higher level mobs, and I only have 2-3 times dodges throughout the fight. So, I have to kill the mobs before it launches attack for 4-6 times, which I can’t. I can only do it with the mobs that move very slowly (given that there are no other mobs nearby when I am kitting it, which rarely happens) or have pre animation attack (that big risen that will rush towards you, can’t remember the name).

ele’s are actually one of the better solo classes, if you’re experienced at the game. (FYI, lupicus is one of the hardest dungeon bosses in the game. even teams of 5 wipe on him quite often.)

You can solo nearly any of the content in the game if you’re skilled enough, honestly.

(of course this is a level 80 solo-ing a level 80 boss (designed for 5 people though). but it applies to all aspects of the game. as long as you’re skilled enough, you can fight enemies much stronger than you, e.g. this content designed for level 80’s being done by a level 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb_ezeb778g )

As for your post, I agree/disagree with a lot of it, and it was an interesting read how your opinions formed as you were leveling.

Also, as they’ve said, the “unlock skills as you use them” was the way it used to work, and honestly I don’t understand why they got rid of it… I loved that system, even if it was a bit grindy.

tPvP New Player FAQs

in PvP

Posted by: ITheNormalPerson.9275

ITheNormalPerson.9275

What’re the top 3 rules to pvp?

Not so much tips for pvp, but still something everyone, new and old, should abide by imo.
1. Don’t be a jerk to your opponents or teammates, it’s just plain rude and a hamper on the quality of spvp
2. Don’t leave a match unless you absolutely HAVE to. (and if you think you’ll probably have to, it might be a better idea to hold off on queueing.)
3. Focus on capping the nodes, not just killing the enemy team. no matter how skilled you are, if you’re focused on just trying to kill people, you’re gonna have a bad time.

How do you decide on where to rotate and why?

Whether you should rotate or not depends on your mobility and what the other team is doing from match to match. is their team a lot of slow classes and they never have someone at far? try decapping it whenever you get the chance. an enemy thief just died and no one is near home? start heading to a spot where you can see if that thief is heading there.

Also make sure you pay attention to classes and numbers. don’t enter a 1v1 where you’re gonna lose, and don’t try to cap a node where you’re in a 2v1.

How do you decide on who to target and why?

In team fights, generally the squishiest, for obvious reasons (and obviously power necros since they’re always at risk of pulling a lich)

What are the biggest mistakes you see new players make?

Too much time fighting people and not enough time capping nodes, along with zerging. worst mistake I see is 4 people going off a node to chase a single player down. It happens a lot

What are the top 3 bunkers in your opinion?

d/d ele, shoutbow warrior, and engineers.

What are the top 3 DPS classes in your opinion?

depends on what you mean. highest damage without concern to defense, or best damage dealers with means to prevent being blown up the second someone blinks at them? I’ll assume the latter.

Meditation Guardians, Shatter mesmer, and Sword/Dagger thief.

What are the most important roles for each class?

Note that I don’t play Engi, Warrior, or Mesmer, so I’m just saying what I appreciate the most from them. I’m also going by some of the most popular builds, obviously you can trait for something completely different.

Warrior – for the most part, bunkering nodes and providing team support via shouts/banners
Guardians – Excellent teamfighting potential, turning the tides of 2v2+ in their favor.
Thief – mobility, to quickly get to home/far to decap or defend.
Engineer – Bunkering nodes or helping out in teamfights
Ranger – decent team support via bursting down targets, along with easily pulling people away from nodes with ranged damage. and if traited, can easily bait into a hard target with decent survivability, since nowadays, it’s assumed you’ll be glass.
Mesmer – Decapping nodes and bursting down opponents effectively.
Necro – supporting teamfights with wells/plagues/lich forms etc, along with good 1v1 potential with bunkers like d/d eles
Elementalist – Bunkering nodes and decent mobility when required

Note that i’m by no means an expert at spvp, this is just my opinion.

Mhm, definitely lag. when my internet is bad, sometimes I’ll down far away from people stomping. e.g. on Forest of Niflhel, I’ll down halfway down the stairs on mid, and see people all the way at the mid point trying to stomp me.

There may be a way to purposely recreate it, but I feel for the most part, it’s just people with bad connections

I want to feel that I’ve “completed” a game within 50-80 hours(not 100% it. just completing it. in gw2 terms it would be reaching 80 and getting a full set of exotics, for me). and yes, I realize that’s not typical for mmos, but it’s still what I’d prefer.

50-80 hours to 80 and full set of exotics??? and yet here I am, 120 hours, level 70.

it just depends on what gamemode you play I ’spose. it took me about 40 hours to reach 80, and since levels 40 through 80 were done via wvw, i already had the currency for exotic gear

and i’m not saying you’re wrong because it’s an opinion. subjective things are never wrong in my eyes. I can state that I dislike your viewpoint (i would be frustrated if gw2 had these changes made) but i wouldn’t say you’re wrong :P

  • sPvP
All players are scaled up to level 80 and equipped with the same gear in PvP instances. It feels like a sport or board game here, seriously. So fair, so boring. I like games that require player skills, like Monster Hunter. However, I dislike games that require only players skills, like DotA, LOL and CS. I prefer to be destroyed by some old players with good gears rather than having so much fairness in PvP. Low level or weakly geared players are supposed to be defeated by older players easily (even I am the low level guy here). That said, sPvP is a perfect platform for competitions or leaderboard.

I enjoy this pvp system. it lets me try things i wouldn’t normally try, like the necro i’m currently leveling. The vets should be able to beat a new player, yes. but with skill, not simple numbers. (also i’m against statistical advantage determining who wins, but that’s another topic entirely)

  • No open world PvP
Probably the main reason why Tyria is so peaceful.

I do honestly think there should be an option for open world pvp or at least dueling, but sure am I glad it’s not required. i tried archeage, tera, and vanilla wow on pvp servers (friends wanted me to play, i would have picked pve only otherwise) and GEEZ did i hate it.

  • No KS
Another reason Tyria is so peaceful. I am having a love hate feeling with this setting. I have played enough MMORPGs to know how annoying KS can be. However, without KS, the PvE gameplay feels empty. I don’t have to find a group, I can just drop by any events and walk away anytime I like. I even saw a lot of players in the forum say they simply AFK and auto attack the world bosses. Where is the fun in that???

I enjoy the fact I don’t have to find a group. I’m a very solo-casual player, I like to do things at my own pace, and not being pigeon-holed into playing with strangers (and when a high level goes into a low level area to steal kills it just bothers me and makes me want to quit playing.)

  • No GvG
WHY??? I am looking for something like the Band of Brothers war in EVE Online. I want big guild wars (it’s fine even I am not part of the war, I want to at least see something like this!!).

i’m indifferent, since i’m not a part of any large guilds that would participate in that.

  • Easy leveling
I learnt this from my previous post, “GW2 leveling is way too fast”. Now I understand why leveling in GW2 is so fast. “It unlocks all the contents for all the players quickly, so every players can play all the contents in the game.”. That’s my conclusion from my previous post. I am actually pretty shocked by this answer. “Access to all the contents”?? Isn’t this an MMORPG? From my previous MMORPGs experience, only top ranked or top level players can access to “all the contents” in the game. Why make all players accessible to all the contents in the game? It makes GW2 feels like a Single Player RPG with multiplayer feature enabled.

and i’m glad that it takes similarities from single player rpg’s. they’re some of my favorite games. I think I mentioned it in the topic you’re speaking of, but I always got frustrated and stop playing other mmos because i didn’t want to spend 100+ hours to reach max level. I just don’t have that kind of dedication to grinding, I want to feel that I’ve “completed” a game within 50-80 hours(not 100% it. just completing it. in gw2 terms it would be reaching 80 and getting a full set of exotics, for me). and yes, I realize that’s not typical for mmos, but it’s still what I’d prefer.

  • No world channel
This is one of the features I like the most in MMORPG. This is where the arguments happened and where the guild wars started. I love watching those fights. However in GW2, world channel is not there. I guess the reason is “players will spam here and argue here, we don’t want this to affect other players”. Yeah, I can play Single Player games if I don’t want to affect by other players.

based on what i’ve seen of other games “world channels”, i’m pretty much satisfied that we don’t have to deal with that.

note that I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just saying the reasons I’m glad A-Net made GW2 the way it is. It’s done so many things that other mmos don’t that i’m extremely thankful for as a solo/casual player.

the armor set is basically a set of skins for that armor class. i would look on the wiki to see what they look like, and pick the one you like the best. afaik, purely cosmetic. worth a decent amount of money if you were to buy it on the gemstore, so choose wisely.

the guild item gives “influence” to the guild, which the guild uses to buy upgrades to make the guild better. not a noticable amount tbh

and no, the upgrade isn’t really worth getting. it has some very minor things, but not enough to warrant the cost

Unscrupulous guilds...?

also, something i don’t think anyone pointed out, is that the “invite to party” button is very close to the “kick from guild” button. in a previous wvw guild i would get kicked by people 2-3 times a week misclicking while forming parties.

along with that, as other people pointed out, it may have been due to inactivity or not repping enough (though i personally disagree with 100% rep guilds, but that’s another story) or it could have been another person kicking you because they didn’t know you

I would personally mail them just to see the reason, just so you know for the future, regardless of if you’re going to join the guild again or not. but that’s just me.

if it isn’t simply based around leveling, then maybe.

a video showing all the cool things to do as you level up, with an entertaining personality commentating though? i’d watch that. doubt you could make that last for ~40 characters though ;P

Depends on what i’m doing. (and of course it’s subjective)

Ranger is all around fun to me (except maaaybe in dungeons, but I just don’t really like dungeons.)
Thief is kinda fun in spvp
Guardian is fun in wvw zergs and spvp
Ele is fun in everything but roaming

and I’m leveling a necro currently and it’s pretty fun in spvp

simply, the fights got boring. the amount of “stay up all night partying with your friends wvwing” nights slowly dwindled until it felt like they never happen anymore. I still roam occasionally when i get the itch to wvw though.

played beta with one pet, didn’t have a problem. i think this is a l2p issue ;P (sarcasm if it wasn’t obvious enough)

but seriously, it wasn’t that big of a deal. barely even noticed, since most of the events were pretty easy, i had lots of survivability with cele, and after the first hour i was mostly exploring.
