firstly, i’d like to say that my #1 tip is to ignore the toxic community. (but pay attention to the people who actually want to use teamwork :P)

I’m not really a fan of having to work towards mastery tracks via generic leveling. I was expecting the mastery points themselves being the sole unlocker of masteries. (e.g., beat wyvern, get mastery point, unlock gliding! not, beat wyvern, unlock mastery point, select mastery, beat wyvern 10 more times for the xp, unlock gliding!)

I sorta enjoy desert scenery, just not in the way gw2 has done it. my favorite example of good desert scenery to me would be Journey. I enjoy it feeling empty, and most importantly, ENDLESS. where-as gw2’s desert areas feels claustrophobic and cramped, which while okay in say, a jungle map, is unappealing to me in a desert map

Aren’t you allowed to take screenshots? Everyone here is talking about how amazing the Itzel village is, but I haven’t seen a single picture.

here’s one cap when i was recording of the approach from one angle. there isn’t much opportunity to screenshot while inside of it because it’s very windy and compact.

also, yes, I really enjoyed this area. reminded me of the labyrinthine cliffs which are one of my favorite areas in the game. I could see growing accustomed to it and speeding all over the maze-like pathways much faster than someone that just got there, from pure player knowledge. imo, that’s what they should work towards when it comes to “mastering” the forest

All this talk about toxicity

in PvP

Posted by: ITheNormalPerson.9275

ITheNormalPerson.9275

I have a simple 5 step program for dealing with toxic players in pvp.

1. oh look, someone is being annoying
2. don’t get upset because it’s just a vidya game.
3. block them
4. (optional) report the player if they are being especially toxic and it seem appropriate.
5. continue on with day

spreading hate isn’t the cure for hate, and neither is raging on the forums. If you want to criticize the state of hot join, it’s better to do it in a straightforward and constructive manner, rather than raging about a specific player you faced.

omg legendaries aren’t legendary guys, this is a brand new breakthrough!

anyways, if you want to feel unique, then just make a legendary and skin it over with one of the psuedo legendaries, e.g. make kudzu and transmute it with azureflame.

i’m fine with there only being a small amount of legendaries. means there’s less of a chance i’ll find another one i like enough to waste the time making :P I much prefer the 100-500G that most unique skins cost

I would like the idea of having about 1 week or so after HoT releases where you can trade in ascended armor for other stat combinations (maybe a 5-10g fee for trading in for cele since that arguably is a bit harder to make)

I wouldn’t like it as a permanent feature, but since HoT is adding some major changes to the game it would be nice. not required of them, but a nice gesture.

Ranger Staff

“useless staff support”

oh geez.. I think you just gave most wvw(and probably spvp) rangers an aneurysm..

firstly, I’d like to point out that we dont even know what the staff will provide. staffs for most classes are actually generally pretty good/the best ranged weapon for their class.

secondly, lb dps is pretty kitten good to begin with. the only place where it isn’t great is in say, dungeons where you’re not getting team support. but that’s a problem with the stacking-melee-range meta currently present in dungeons, not our dps.

thirdly, assuming staff is going to be a support weapon, this is what most rangers have been asking for, for ages! if it is that, I commend anet for actually listening to us!

as for your points
1. adressed above
2. they do decent dps, and if you micromanage them, they will last for a decent amount of time (i can make my pets last almost forever in dungeons by timing my pet-swaps and healthy amounts of recall) what we need is better AI and control over it.

on a side note, druid will be changing the class mechanic for rangers. possibly addressing some of our issues?

3.we have plenty of stunbreak skills (my spvp build has 3, on relatively low cooldowns) as for stability, I somewhat agree.

Is Gw2 worth coming back?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ITheNormalPerson.9275

ITheNormalPerson.9275

I was the same as you when I started, I think. I made a staff ele because it was the closest thing I could think of to a healer (I enjoy playing healing classes in other games). I got it up to about 20-25, then quit out of boredom
over half a year passes, I decide to pick it up again, and try something new. not sure what made me do it, but I picked a ranger, and oh geez was it fun. not only because I was playing what was, to me, a much funner class.. but I also discovered WvW which was very awesome at the time.

In short, it depends on why you quit and what you enjoy. the game is still the same game. so if you disliked the design philosophy, or the skills etc. you probably won’t have fun with it. but if you were like me and just didn’t find your.. “niche” in the game yet, then I would definitely give it another try.

as for what class to play, that’s entirely up to you. I suggest reading up on the classes on the wiki, and playing the one that sounds the most fun to you personally. and if you don’t enjoy it, move on. I didn’t think I would enjoy ranger. I’ve always been magic/healing in other games. but boy am I glad I tried it.

would be a great option, but I could imagine that it’d be a LOT of work for them to do.

maybe instead of dyes the same way armor is dyed, have a “weapon dye-er” that can dye your weapons with simple changes, e.g. green/blue/red/white/black/yellow/purple. and only have certain weapons dye-able and roll more out as time goes on.

it’d be much less work imo and would help with the problem of say, ascended weapons literally just being recolors.

GW2 leveling is way too fast.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ITheNormalPerson.9275

ITheNormalPerson.9275

and I know it isn’t this way now, and I think it might be a mistake on Anets part, but when the game first came out, for a long time, people WERE doing dungeons of the appropriate level. that “80+ only” junk has only developed once people got to that level and made their legendaries and junk and now they feel like they’re superior and don’t want to waste time with the likes of a *gasp/ newww playerrr

That makes new players like me very sad. I can’t even find players to run dungeon at my level with me through LFG. I only ran AC twice, once with some very helpful players, who kept telling me I am doing great while I kept dying, and once with my guild mates.

It makes (semi-)veterans like me sad too. it’s why my lfg always states that anyone of any level is welcome to join, and while i can’t account for other players in the party, i never ragequit on them either :P

IMO, at this point, it’s just something that happens as mmos age. and I think gw2 does it a bit better than some, in that aside from story-modes, all the dungeons are still fairly popular, even at max level, which is better than a level 30 dungeon just dying because it is useless to max level players.

I do agree that it’s something that needs to be looked into though

and @lastshot, that’s somewhat of what i’m implying. they feel like they shouldn’t spend the time “dealing” with low levels

GW2 leveling is way too fast.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ITheNormalPerson.9275

ITheNormalPerson.9275

I’m the of the opposite opinion, personally

This is the first mmo i’ve reached max level in. Other mmos I would play for a week, go “oh geez i’m still no where NEAR reaching max level”(partially due to, just like you, I enjoy taking things slowly) then get kinda frustrated at my lack of progress and stop playing. GW2 has a leveling speed that I feel is similar to the single player rpgs I love, like skyrim or dark souls. Where while leveling is a good upgrade, you never feel like you HAVE to be focusing on leveling if you don’t want to spend a year to get to the endgame.
Also, I suppose “low level content being boring” is subjective as well. Low level content such as caledon forest is some of my favorite content in the game, where-as end-game content like dungeons or Orr i could do without.
Of course, I’m probably somewhat of an oddity in the realm of mmos. The first mmo I played for longer than a week was Wizard101 when I was 12-13, then when I was 15-16 I moved on to GW2. Compared to other people, I probably have had a somewhat unique experience to mmos, what-with neither of the above being near “traditional mmo”. I’m not a fan of dungeons, guilds, or honestly, aside from GW2, pvp, for example. I like to have an enjoyable experience on my own. (inb4 hurr durr mmo is for multiplayer!) And I feel GW2 really does that.

EDIT: and I know it isn’t this way now, and I think it might be a mistake on Anets part, but when the game first came out, for a long time, people WERE doing dungeons of the appropriate level. that “80+ only” junk has only developed once people got to that level and made their legendaries and junk and now they feel like they’re superior and don’t want to waste time with the likes of a *gasp/ newww playerrr

there’s 3 things i can’t decide between

finally, after over a year of working towards it (yes it took me about 1 1/2 years to make it), finishing my Kudzu

Back when WvW was much more popular (at least on my server) and almost every night was giant fun fights and lots of amusing teamspeak conversations (granted that’s not just one moment, it’s probably hundreds)

and, of course, when I first started the game. I saw a youtuber (MrRhexx, specifically) play it, and went “dang.. this game looks pretty cool, and i’ve been wanting to try an mmo”.
I didn’t really know what I was getting into, honestly, and I was super overwhelmed when I started, but oh geez, was it so cool just running around the sylvari starting area, and then killing like 200 drakes to unlock all my skills (my first character was actually an elementalist.)

In particular, I saw the map and it just BLEW MY MIND. it was so amazing looking and made the world look so large. Sadly, it isn’t quite as large as other mmos, and to my disappointment, the ENTIRE map isn’t available, but it definitely made up for that with the insane amount of detail in the map compared to other mmos i’ve tried. almost every area felt brand new, and nothing felt empty. and that was awesome.

In-game Weddings speculation

Let me put this in a more simple way. When you sell all of your collectibles on the trading post, how much time does it take? A long time, I bet. And you no doubt encounter the “selling error” that throttles sell attempts to stop bots..

kinda off-topic, but it takes me 5 minute tops per day.. salvage all → sell the stacks of mats on the TP. usually not even enough items to trigger the “error” :P

regardless, weddings would be really cool! now I just need to find people to actually play with…

it also might balance out what feels like the large amount of female humans in the game, jussayin.

That being said though, I think in-game weddings are pretty unlikely. Maybe just me, but it doesn’t seem like A-net’s style

afaik, cd’s are cheaper than usb drives, so it would cost them money that they may not be willing to spend

Rangers and the misdirected frustration

in Ranger

Posted by: ITheNormalPerson.9275

ITheNormalPerson.9275

-When you first join and a ranger is on your team, do you automatically assume they are a power ranger until proved different?
-When you first join and there are multiple rangers on your team, do you automatically assume a loss?
-When you first join and your team lacks melee/support but has multiple rangers, do you wish they would swap classes?
-When playing as a ranger, are you often blamed for a loss even if you played well?
-When playing as a ranger, do other players call “gg” if they have rangers on their team?

-Sort of. I don’t assume it, but I do think that there’s a decent chance. once I see the longbow though, then I assume they’re a power ranger.

-No, definitely not.

-Not really no. I don’t think people should stop playing whatever class they enjoy at the time just to have a higher chance of winning.

-Sometimes, but rarely. maybe 3-4 times a week, pvping 3-4 hours a day (when i have the time to play that much)

-Never seen that happen, specifically because of a ranger. I have seen it happen to multiple classes because they didn’t do good in a previous match though.

As for the “friendliest community” bit, it depends where you look. arguably I’d say from most toxic – least toxic it would be

Forums(Kappa) → PvP → Dungeons/EoTM → WvW → Open world PvE

of course that’s in terms of most player bashing and such. hating on the gamemode, a different topic.

and at least from my experience from playing other mmos (I went on an mmo tour a while back, playing Rift, Tera, Archeage, SWTOR, Wakfu, Ragnarok, WoW, and Aion), GW2 has debatably the best community when it comes to just casually pve-ing, which is where I think the saying comes from (It’s also known for being the most casual friendly, fyi.)

Of course, that being said, I do think the hate on rangers is a bit overboard, and also slightly hypocritical. We go from hated for being useless, then we get buffed because of their complaints, now we get hated for being both OP and stupid/useless. And honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if we get nerfed back down once HoT rolls out and they eventually get around to balancing around specializations.

Support, especially in large groups like wvw.
And along with that, good large group abilities, the GS is okay for frontlining, but is generally outclassed by other classes. i think good AoE’s would help as well

all for player housing, though i’d prefer it to be completely aesthetic, no utility and such.. just a gold sink for players (like me) who enjoy customization for the sake of customization, without adding anything that might lead 90% of the forums to rant for ages about how awful it is.

just have 2-5 places in each city (or just the default ones i guess) where you can buy a house for a set amount of gold (or even gems tbh) and have it customizable. that would make me a very happy cat

If you would have to walk into some sort of portal in a city I think some utility wouldn’t hurt. Just maybe a merchant, a repair NPC and a bank.
They just have to make sure that not everybody leaves the cities because of it.

of course, I agree, it definitely wouldn’t hurt. However, what it COULD do, is open up a venue for the anti-housing group to complain about how it is totally ruining the game. Not saying I agree with them, but personally, I don’t care too much if it has utility or not.. it would be a nice addition though

Why do players hate Courtyard?

dislike the map because it’s practically completely counter-intuitive towards my build, but i also dislike the gamemode tbh. I prefer being an objective player.. I usually focus on rotating across points and grabbing stuff like buffs or trebs, rather than going to that big fight that generally happens at mid

not to say it’s a bad gamemode, it’s just not my preference. i would rather conquest and deathmatch just have seperate queues

1. potentially druid. I am very excite for it.. my optimism could end badly though
2. dragonhunter. longbows are cool, and so are traps and junk. I really like it
3. reaper. scythes are cool.. that is basically all. not a fan of shouts though
4. chronomancer. idk, it just didn’t strike me as particularly interesting.

of course that’s only of the ones with currently released information, positions will obviously likely change as more are released
