Yeah, it is a bit annoying, but it’s not on the top of the list of “things that need fixing”
eventually I would like an updated string though :P
It helps if you post what you want to do with it (open world pve, dungeons, spvp, wvw) and if you have any preferences (would prefer condi, want to be tanky, etc.)
along with that, most builds only reach the “functional” stage at 80, so it’d be worthwhile to level it before focusing on builds
my respect for a-net has gone up significantly today. nice to see they’re taking old suggestions to heart
I am a very happy person right now
now to wait for the update to actually come… :P
also, inb4 “rangers op wth” posts
-log in
-roam in wvw
-salvage and sell mats from roaming
-log off
I lead a simple life.
I’m amazed I keep coming back to this thread and people are still thinking its a serious topic.
jokes? on the internet? no wayyyy
Noting the popularity of Point Blank shot by the generally ignorant Ranger PvE crowd, I think we can help all of those smarmy one button wondermonkeys by making every attack on the longbow be Point Blank Shot.
This way, I can stop asking myself if its worth it to target the same mob they do, and I can just ignore the entire lot altogether.
EDIT (for the witless): If you consider this a serious suggestion, I hope you die horribly.
EDIT2 tl;dr: Monkey press button make bad guy go away. Yay. All button must make bad guy go away. Make many happy for me. Make longbow better by making all bad guy go away. All time. Every time. Why everyone hate me now?
I’m just failing to see your point no offense. Some guy uses the knockback all the time….. and so this causes you to become enraged? Whats your point?
I do so enjoy when I’m roaming with my warrior friend to pbs people out of his hundred blades. he still loves me though
it needs a 300% damage increase, and rangers need a reliable way to strip boons like stability. (trait for boon strip on PBS anyone?), before this would ever be a valid change to the longbow. at least think before you post suggestions.

someone didn’t read my sig ;P
if i must verify my playstyle in order to have my opinion validated, I play about 70% wvw roaming (1v1, 1vX) about 25% solo queue, and about 5% PvE (world bosses sometimes and dungeons if my guildies need an extra body)
if you focus on cc-ing the enemy pets can hit somewhat reliably (I don’t run a beastmaster spec but those that do can probably give more information). regardless, that has nothing to do with what i’m debating currently. All I’m saying that AI’s can being used in a skilled manner if they’re made as such. if you summon an AI and it does everything on it’s own, it requires no skill, but currently I run what is essentially on the “requires skill”-level of an engineer toolbelt or higher (they have 4 utilities, I have 4 utilities along with the difficulty of positioning the pet, and focusing on it’s health, with the added bonus of doing a bit extra DPS)
note: I don’t actually have anything against using pets as a pure utility. I’ve actually suggested it in the past. all I’m saying is that “relying on AI” isn’t, by it’s nature, a bad thing. it “could” be bad, but it could also be good. and personally, I think if pets WORKED AS THEY WERE INTENDED (it’s fairly obvious they could use a bit more work) then that would be perfectly fine as well.
(edited by ITheNormalPerson.9275)
relying on AI to do all your damage is a terrible way to play a game. Like phantasm PU mesmers and turrent engis.
you still haven’t sourced your statistic. if you’re going to make fake statistics state it as an estimate
that being said, passive ai, I agree, is a bad design. however actively controlled ai (on the level of pets currently if they worked as intended or higher) requires skill to play and is a valid playstyle (IMHO)
flattered because it sounds like you owned him
i’ve had a personal experience of a thief complaining my build was too one-shotty and said something along the lines of “lol yeah she comes in here and if she screws up she’s screwed because it’s one-shot”
I was tempted to say “yeah unlike you I don’t have countless escapes” :P
generally people like to complain that builds/classes are OP as an excuse for losing. it’s pretty hard to do so when you get beat by a ranger in gw2 though ;P
I saw a mesmer make a post about rangers being op when the ranger was running a one-shot signet build, the mesmer had no armor, and was getting hit for ~10k or something. it was amusing, to say the least.
It’s been suggested that pets by default give less %overalldamage but when traited can give more than is currently available.
if they’re going to make the pet 5% i’d rather just make them passive, like has been suggested repeatably.
I’m curious as well. it’s not a huge deal to me, but it is kinda weird that my fervid censer is called quad spinal blades (yes i still use a rare backpiece, 2poor4anythingelse)
If this has drifted away from p2w (which is seemingly has) then I’m perfectly ok with it. people who pay real life money deserve more for keeping the game alive, in the form of exclusive minis, special skins, etc. (something you don’t need to have but completionists or people who just like it would want)
-snip-
you might want to re-read the post, jussayin’
I don’t have too much advice, being someone who only played on FoW for a decent amount of time, but I’d say you’d probably want to look a biiit higher than that. either high bronze or low silver. FoW generally had commanders but very little in the “people” department (granted I played really early EU time, but usually it was 1-2 commanders and like 10 people tops)
if anyone who plays bronze tier eu and feels like calling me an idiot feel free, as my sig suggests, I don’t play there anymore
Nice, but do we get a nice Aurora effect for The Dreamer? Nope, just get to shoot ponies, and get foot effect. while as the legendary LB hs a flower effect, Epic arrows, + foot prints.
the aura on the longbow is barely noticable, especially if you have either of the flower backpieces equipped, whilst the dreamer has much, MUCH more visible projectiles, along with shortbow skills generally having more projectiles in the form of bouncing, spreadshots, etc. (I’m happy with both legendary bows atm)
on a semi on topic note, does it stack with MH aura’s? curious what that would look like.
I hope they talk about the changes they’re going to make due to the old CDI thread, instead of just waiting in anticipation for something that might be severely dissapointing
since the lag is recent then it’s probably because of these recent “server crashes” as a-net has taken to calling them (most of the player base is assuming it’s the effect of DDOS-ing)
as someone who has really fluctuating internet (I can play from about 4am-noon and watch youtube at 720p but anytime between can range from watching youtube at 420p to not even being able to load 144p) I can say that most of the lag problems relating to anything aside from framerate issues have been fixed
No, the steel chest was dropped by a player. The camp was ours and defending it would not have dropped a chest if the supervisor went down.
do empyreal fragments even drop from players? as far as I know they don’t
Can ranger make the most of the Celestial Armour?
ranger ckittene celestial pretty decently
random champ appearances that attack based on ppt differences could be neat (25k in the lead? have a siege giant start bashing on one of your towers!)
not anything crazy, mind you. just something that couldn’t be left alone for extended periods of time.
that, or some sort of battle alert that causes some objective to happen and whichever team completes it (or it could be exclusive to one team) gets some loot or ppt
this game is cpu based, your gpu holds very little when it comes to the framerate in guild wars 2. how’s your cpu currently?
edit: kitten you just posted it. an i5 2.5 is a bit slow, especially if dual core (too un-invested to search for your laptop specs). I’d say a quad core 3.0 is the “medium settings requirement” for this game

I’m all for player houses, but I’m against building it anywhere. it would take too much work for the developers to add (time better spent elsewhere) and would possibly ruin the fantastic atmosphere of the game
Actually, there would be ways to make that work. Please see the link in my sig to someone’s idea of portable doors.
The idea was that buildings that already exist in the environment, from farm houses to hylek huts to clay housing in Prosperity, get “marked” by the devs in certain spots that look like doors. Players would then be able to buy a door item from the gem shop, and pick any “house” that supports a door in this way. It would be interactable only for the player(s) who chose this spot. Party members would be able to follow them into the instance.
There could be different styles of interiors to choose from (again, farm hous, norn hut, straw hut, etc.), or they’d come with the “door spot”.
If new maps were released (Southsun cove straw huts, Prosperity, …) many players would buy the gem shop item again to move their door to the new area. This would mean that players could pick housing in a location and style they choose, IF they want player housing at all, and would be completely non-invasive for other players. To other players, it would look no different than a player logging in or out in the middle of a map.
The idea wasn’t mine, but I think it’s amazing and I would love the hell out of it.
this would be perfectly fine for me. when i hear “build your own house anywhere” i think of a mix between any location (like minecraft) and templates (like hearthfire for skyrim) which is why I would be worried about that
but buying pre-existing housing would be totally fine. you could actually tie in some outside player customization via megaservers, e.g. each megaserver instance will be it’s own “neighboorhood” and each megaserver instance will have 1 owner of each pre-existing buildings (of course not crazy customization, but something like a small banner/flag or something would be pretty neat
that’s kinda a long stretch though. I’d settle for just being able to customize our home instance as is
from a wvw standpoint
ranger/engineer>mesmer>thief>necro/ele>warrior/guardian
I usually use the stealth to reposition to help me kite. it’s hard to get into melee range of me when I disappear :P
though that’s coming from a wvw player, sounds like you’re using it for spvp
in that case, when i spvp, I’ll use it to give me a bit more survivability. with my block/hunter shot/etc. I generally have enough time to use healing spring about 3 times when fighting 1-2(occasionally 3 if they’re bad) giving me a decent amount of survivability
“this is what the people want”
this is what YOU want, and assume people want.
I’m all for player houses, but I’m against building it anywhere. it would take too much work for the developers to add (time better spent elsewhere) and would possibly ruin the fantastic atmosphere of the game
@fluffball houses are definitely a QoL thing, and that being the case… I just like houses. I am just a fan of having your own building in a game that you can personalize and make it your own.. I can’t explain that feeling, I just feel that way.
Generally guild groups running without a tag are doing so because they’re running an organized group against possibly other organized groups, and a few pugs will just give the enemies a bunch of free rallies (even if they are skilled the chances are they won’t be in teamspeak, parties, etc. with the guild group and might not get the boons they need, will be delayed on when to leap/dps, etc.)
For the sake of your server, don’t follow tagless zergs unless they want you to. if this is a common problem just buy your own tag and run a pug zerg at the same time (generally CD has a few guild groups and a pug group whenever we organize (friday night mostly))
It goes invisible with you. my backpiece is usually completely visible when i stealth as well :P
Currently a near-full soldiers set and some pieces from my old knight’s set
hoping on making a set of ascended sentinels as soon as i finish my ascended backpiece
So the melee classes are the easiest It sounds like. I might give the warrior a swing just to get a feel for the game in general.
I do kind of want to play a ranger/thief but surfing around on their forums tell me that they aren’t in a real good spot right now so Ill probably wait on those.
thief seems to be in a nerf-bait spot atm, but by no means are bad in anything aside from maybe dungeons and zergs (but then again they have their place in wvw zergs)
rangers aren’t as bad as people make them out to be, but have the problem of being less than perfect in zergs, and the clunky pet AI is hard to get used to
i’m not sure if it’s a bug or if you just cast it that direction and completely miss.
regardless I would like to see some longbow skills (#3 especially) hitting more reliably, especially close up
200g is largely enough to buy one berserker armor set + trinkets.
I would also recommend a soldier armor set (power/toughness/vitality) for wvw, it helps with survivability and it’s cheap (farm badges of honors by following the zerg in EotM and buy the set at the armor vendor on any wvw map).I got a few thousand honour badges already is that enough? Sorry I can’t get on the game right now and check how much it’ll cost :\ I also noticed the defence tends to be weaker on armour you buy with badges of honour? It was when I last looked in on it, anyway, but then again I have no idea what’s going on in game apparently lol
as long as you go to the vendor that sells exotic (orange) armor, it will be just the same. and a few thousand will cover the costs for sure (i think the chest piece is about 2g & 200 badges?)
also knights is a good choice if you don’t want to spend like 40g on zerker but still want to be semi glassy, since it’ll only cost you <10g
Well I bought a berserker chest (which was 1g
) , leggings and boots and while hideous, they seemed to have changed some of my attributes around. By the way, what am I meant to be going for attribute-wise? No idea what I’m aiming for here (thanks for the help, by the way!)
if you want to go very glassy, you’re a bit lacking in both power and precision currently. When fully geared you’ll probably want at least 2,000 power and around 2,000 precision (or anywhere that puts you around 50% crit chance would be good)
though to be honest your stat layout now isn’t “too” bad. a few things though to improve it
-I notice you have 72 extra points into condition damage, and 54 points in healing power. these are probably best being put elsewhere (such as precision)
-You’re a bit lacking in the precision department. with fury you’ll only have 55% which while “ok”, isn’t great. I’d recommend taking the 126 points from condi damage and healing power and sticking it in there, and about 100-200 from vitality as well.
-your power/ferocity stats could also do with a little boost, but isn’t required. (as long as you’re critting for arouuund 1,700-2,000)
to be exact, the stats of the build I showed you was
2,161 power (this will make your standard hits hit for at least 800-1000)
1,116 toughness (same as below)
916 vitality (pretty glassy so could be increased if you’re dying a bunch)
2,023 precision (this sticks you at 57% crit chance, 77% when you use rampage as one)
1,026 ferocity (this will give you an extra 118% damage every time you get a critical hit (which with 77% crit chance is most of the time)
note that while a pure glass build like this is popular in pve due to enemies being EZ, that isn’t so when you’re fighting other players. therefore later on when you better understand stats and such, you should swap out some stuff for knights/soldiers to give yourself more toughness and/or vitality.
p.s. you can always transmute the armor ;P
small edit: it’d also be useful to see the gear you’re wearing, not just the total stats. not to say it’s the case but you might have accidentally purchased partially wrong gear or such so it’d be easier to identify that (when i first started I accidentally bought knights gear instead of beserker. ironically it taught me that sometimes it’s nice to have that extra durability)
(edited by ITheNormalPerson.9275)
Ranger!
…What? It’s not like you just posted something without providing any information at all to help us help you..
The funny part is i’m almost passing 5,000 ap and aside from TA up/forward for my legendary, and one or two runs because my guildies needed the extra body, i’ve never ran dungeons before :P but technically I should be allowed in their group! right? right?..
also yeah, while the “uber dungeon runners” are annoying, as people have said, make your own lfg. when I was doing TA, I typically posted something along the lines of “TA up/forward newbies welcome” and it filled within 10 minutes practically everytime
Buy the precursor. Seriously.

Agreed. drop chances I find “fun” in other games. in this game it’s just a steady source of gold to buy the things i want. no fun involved at all in loot tables. (I still enjoy the game, but better loot tables would improve it more for me)
a few things I personally disagree with
“No Sense of Wonder” some places honestly blow me away (bamboo grove in the grove anyone?) not much i can say to argue that since it’s extremely subjective though :P
“Lack of Meaningful Interaction” as someone who has social problems, this is actually one of the reasons i prefer gw2 over others. you don’t need to communicate to play this game, but if you do, you can achieve better results. perfect for someone like me who wants to play but has a hard time socializing
“No New Expansions” if an expansion came out, I probably wouldn’t buy it (coming from someone who has spent over $100 on gem store items) personally I just don’t like expansions or dlc of any sort. (e.g. I’m not going to buy the dark souls 2 dlc/expansion even though it’s one of my favorite games (though that’s partially because they promised no dlc. that’s a different game topic though :P))
aside from that, and sorta the guild part (i don’t really care about guilds) I agree 100%
moral of the story: bears suck?
small edit:
actually, moral of the story: people who don’t know what they’re doing are surprisingly, bad at the game. I’d die instantly if I ever did fractals, but in wvw that’s another story.
Prysin streams, I believe. I’ve never seen him play (lol VoD hates me) but I hear he’s ok at showing you what you shouldn’t be doing
I’ll leave it to him to post anything about when/if he streams though, which he’ll probably do soonish :P
Warrior is possibly the easiest and “hottest” class right now
ranger/necro and occasionally mesmer are critisized for being hard to learn and/or not helpful and/or underpowered.
I roam to get better at fighting (and be the best, arouuuund) if they run, that just means I won that fight. if they come back, I generally just get better at fighting them (I fought a R80 warrior a while back about 5 times, and lost miserably the first 3 times, the 4th time was basically a tie when we got ran over by my zerg, and the 5th fight I won)
I don’t really care about the loot bags (would join a zerg if that were the case)
I don’t care about ppt (I would be taking camps)
I don’t really care about stacks (my build does fine without them)
amusingly, when most people run, they could have probably beat me
I just bask in the glory of winning if/when they run
small edit: I guess the only thing that annoys me are thieves, as their ICD’s seem much much shorter than mine, so they can come back when all my utilities are on cooldown and beat me then emote spam. oh well though, that’s just the personality of most people who play thieves :P (note: most)
(edited by ITheNormalPerson.9275)
I thought guardians were the basis of balancing, according to anet?
-snip-
I was thinking something like Rush->Whilwind->Sword leap->activate mount, run for like 18s, drop mount sword leap ->rush ->whirlwind -> activate mount, etc.
could be fixed by having cooldowns on mounting, or having mounts only accessible from certain areas (e.g. stables on maps) which would also fixed the “pocket horse” argument I saw from someone earlier
@runeblade …oh :P I knew something looked weird with your post! lol
(I just want a dolyak wvw exclusive mount. even if it can’t be used in wvw it would be hilariously awesome)
I like the female version more. bite me.
which is fair enough.
I just dont get why they offer totally differnt models for the same gear…..
Putting aside the missing bits on female sets, why does it not have a hood whereas the male one does? why does it have an kitten -bow and the male one does not?
Why do the sets look totally different between the sexes? I cant think of a logical reason other than puerile sexist ones…
to an extent it makes sense. just like in the real world males and females wear different things. try playing a charr or asuran (or just talk to people that play them) and you’ll start to learn that having identical armor for both genders is fairly widely disliked
personally, I enjoy having “girly” armor (note: not over-sexualized, just girly) that wouldn’t work on a male character. it’s better than maplestory in which armor drops have a “male” or “female” version and you can only equip one of them and you’re just out of luck if you get the wrong one
-thief
It is the offset for a warrior only.
Mounts can be used by any class lacking reliable swiftness like Necro/Mesmer/Guardian. Those classes use rune of the traveler/speed for mobility.
and thief.
so you’re saying mounts would… give classes like mesmer/guardian a way to get around as quickly as other classes? THE HORROR!
Almost done! now for utilities.
you’re kinda free to pick whatever you want here. they’re mostly good. some general tips though
1. plan ahead with traits and utility skills. using a lot of survival skills? get the swap shared anguish for wilderness knowledge!
2. troll unguent and healing spring are the popular choices when it comes to healing skills. if you pick healing spring, note that you ckitten your GS skill #3 (swoop) to leap through it, granting an additional 2,000~ health!
3. spirits are hard to use unless you trait for it, so are generally not-so-great in pvp/wvw unless you swap around your build. use these when you learn more about how to play.
4. if you notice yourself dying to conditions a lot (note the red things that pop up by your hotbar) you may want to grab either/both healing spring and signet of renewal. without traiting for it, they are pretty good sources of clearing conditions.
5. note that if you’re running dungeons, you’ll want to carry the “frost spirit” skill and use it on the stacks to give bonus damage to your entire team.
6. a good tip for new players is to grab an invincibility skill. (signet of stone and “protect me”) since we don’t have the signet of the beastmaster, go with protect me. notice yourself dying quickly? pop this and it gives you a decent time to re-kitten the situation, heal, whatever you need.
7. Rampage as one is a good starter elite as if gives boons which you can mostly ignore, since they’re passive.
now for the class mechanic – pets.
for the sake of getting bored of typing i’m going to be quick here.
canines (wolves/drakehound etc.) have an inital knockdown on their first attack. if you set your pet to passive you can trigger that for an on demand knockdown when you send them to attack. therefore the “wolf” pet is a class favorite. AoE fear is great and when tied with knockdown makes a superb choice.
spiders have lots of immobilizes and poisons which makes them a fine addition
don’t use bears.
birds and felines do top of the line dps, and are popular in builds utilizing pet dps.
that’s just the general tips that apply to rangers. as you play use your head an make decisions there (getting killed too fast? swap out some of that beserker gear for some soldiers!) try to learn proper combat by watching others. learn the importance of boons and conditions. find someone to help you out in game if you’re still having trouble. (oh, and learn what sigils are and how to use them, orbs on weapons only go so far.)
(p.s. the build i described here would look somewhat like this http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQJATRnMqQBL2vC2CCXLGYPoWHAFwZ3cIuBmD8IUwmK-TFiBwAA8EAO3fAiSQiK/sp+zJdBHM/ZwlAAA-w )
(edited by ITheNormalPerson.9275)
starting fresh
the main problem with your build currently is that it lacks focus. even when lone wolfing your build needs focus on what it wants to do. in general, there are generally two routes to go in that fashion
Staight up DPS
Main Attributes – Power/Precision/Ferocity (beserker/assassins)
Secondary attributes – Toughness/Vitality/Healing Power
Condition based DPS (damage over time)*
Main Attributes – Condition Damage/Precision/Toughness (Rabid)
Secondary attributes – Condition Duration/Vitality
note that i’ve never played a condition based build. if anyone would like to expand on this/correct me, feel free.
it’s safe to say that these are the two primary choices when making builds in gw2, as it is a game based around getting the most damage out, 90% of the time.
on to gear!
you may have noticed me say some gear types at the end of those builds (e.g. rabid) these are the names of gear based on the stats you get from them. since a power based build is easier to learn than a condi based build I’m going to focus on that right now.
so, from the sounds of it, you probably don’t have proper gear. in general, people want
a.) exotic rarity gear
b.) level 80 gear
c.) beserker stat gear
if you don’t have those, look at the trading post and buy some. note that good beserker have these stats
(note that X/X/X is power/precision/ferocity)
2 handed weapon – 179/128/128
one hand/offhand – 90/64/64
Helmet – 45/32/32
shoulders/gloves/boots – 34/24/24
chest – 101/72/72
leggings/rings – 67/48/48
amulet – 90/64/64
earrings – 56/40/40
backpiece – 22/16/16
we’re not done yet!
now that you have gear, you now need runes, sigils, and jewels for your gear.
in the sake of keeping this basic, let’s just say – for your weapons, buy 2x ruby orbs and 2x opal orbs, and put those in your weapons – for your armor, buy 6x superior runes of the ranger, and put those in your armor. – for your trinkets, buy… uhh.. 6x jeweled ruby something or others, and put those there
now you are finally permanently done with your gear! (until you decide to change it up)
second problem – traits! since your build showed you using lb/gs (a very good power choice, might i add!) i’ll go through that here.
firstly, I noticed you spread out your traits – this is a big no no. those major traits near the end generally give very good boosts that you’ll want!
heres a very simple trait layout for a lb/gs build
6/4/4/x/x/x
what this means is putting 6 points into the marksmanship tree, 4 into skirmishing, and 4 into wilderness survival. this gives you the stats you need (precision, ferocity, power, and some toughness to boot) along with the traits you want.
now that you have those, an all around trait choice could be
I/X/XIII
IV/X
III/X
this gives you shorter cooldowns, more consistant and harder hitting attacks and vigor for keeping your dodge rolls going (important for most rangers)
note: this is just a general idea. once you better understand game mechanics, you can change this in all kinds of ways. e.g. my power build is 6/2/2/6/x/x at the moment.
-continued-
