Ranger has bad AoE’s, and by extension, is bad in large group situations. Personally I think all of the medium classes excel at roaming, in particular.
with that in mind, I’d suggest a staff ele. meteors hurt, and you also have statics and water fields for days
What do you guys most enjoy in the game?
Do you actually want a Legendary
and if so, why?
-I enjoy roaming, or doing practically any aspect of WvW, and occasionally some PvP
-Yeah, I’m almost finished with Kudzu
-Because Kudzu is pretty and I want it.
I picked a ranger because ranged combat is generally my go-to in rpg games, and I enjoy having a companion, even if it is an npc (i generally don’t make many friends in games due to my shy nature so it gives me a “you and me against the world!” feeling)
I also picked it because of kudzu, which is my favorite legendary and weapon in the game, period.
Also, this wasn’t intentional, but if I knew the class were somewhat of an underdog i would have been even more biased to choose it. I like underdogs, and I play semi-casually so if i do mediocre people usually don’t mind
(edited by ITheNormalPerson.9275)
I’m generally not a conspiracist, but I almost have to be. I didn’t get as far as rank 600, but 1-250 has given me no rewards, where-as 250-275 has given me 2 ascended chests… it’s strange.
@floude if anything, I can put the sigil that gives 3 crits, but honestly i never had a problem with maul and I have only 60% crit chance atm, and if not it’s on a tiny icd
I have 24s of stability from rampage as one, generally the fight is basically over by then. I also have 2 stun-breaks, over-all my build generally cc’s more than they can cc me (also, just saying, my build has 6 point in WS… not sure why you need to say it’s better than NM ;P)
as I said, I don’t want to use a condi build
thanks for the help, however~
- yay for homemade builds not being absolutely awful! :P
- as I said, I already have a large amount of crit change, I’m not sure how useful more would be. and 300 range is pretty useful for taking out long ranged targets in keeps and such, or when the opponent tries to run (which they inevitably do) the 5% bonus damage is also really nice.
- I’m not sure how useful this would be. I don’t mean this in a braggery way, but I typically can avoid those kinds of hard hitting attacks, and 7% added to power seems pretty significant, though i may be mistaken
- I used to use muddy terrain, but everyone typically has immunities or blocks for most of it, and applying 20 stacks of vuln on opponents near instantaniously with QZ is pretty nice. I do most of my damage with my gs anyways. ranged just doesn’t seem to work very well, and i’d rather appeal to my strong suits than make up for weaknesses
it increases toughness by about +150. perhaps you’re swapping it out for a skill that’s already equipped, or looking at the wrong stat?
@Jim Hunter
thanks for the advice! I was thinking of putting in some poison somehow, so as to dampen other peoples healing. Perhaps I’ll replace my second pet with it (wolf is too good to pass up imo)
quickening zephyr feels “really” useful to me, especially since it gives me massive evades on my gs which is super helpful when surviving. is signet of renewal really that useful since I have healing spring & -40% condi duration?
@others
thanks for the build(s), but i’m moreso looking to changes I can make to my build, or things i’m doing wrong, not brand new builds
I have a leap finisher on my gs, and due to the way healing spring works it gives me 2 leap finishers for a good 2k health (that’s what i’ve noticed while fighting at least)
do you really need opening strike when you have 75~% crit chance? ‘cause that’s what i’ll have.
thanks for the advice though!~
I’ve been using this build for a while
and was thinking of moving to a more survivable build. since my internets been down i’ve been playing with it for the past 3 or so days, and I was curious what your guys thoughts were of this
( http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fNUQJATRjMq0yaBLmsw1ag9gadAUAnd7h4GyWXbRBnqA-TFDBABQt/gzHoAD1x0nmAOV3phjgQlqEcmSQsU+BwlAYiDIQAPAgAAIA78mpzbmN35Mv5je0je0je0uuNP6NP6RLFATCjA-w )
Any thoughts on changes that I should make/bad ideas in it? I’m not exactly the richest, so making a mistake while crafting ascended armor isn’t really viable for me.
addendum:
- I don’t want to change to a condi build
- I don’t want to swap out my weapon choices
- I don’t want to swap out healing spring if at all possible
- I’d prefer to keep rampage as one
past that, suggest away
p.s. sorry if there’s somewhere I should have posted this. I don’t go on this forum often.
edit: p.p.s this if for wvw solo roaming, if it weren’t obvious
few things i’d like to add on to other posts
- people are always going to complain. at this point they just seem kinda spoiled, it’s easily one of, if not, my favorite game
- from what I hear it’s a lot different from other mmos, so going into it comparing it to say, WoW might not be the best idea.
- as has been said, leveling is decently fast in this game. i got my first character to level 80 in about ~1-2 weeks of playing about ~4-6 hours a day, for comparison.
- I don’t know much about WoW, but from a WvW point of view, necros are useful in large groups for their hard hitting AoE’s in the form of wells, and in roaming, I believe they’re most commonly built for putting out tons of conditions. I don’t play a necro so excuse me if i’m wrong, that’s just what i’ve seen while fighting with/against them
This would be nice. if anything, just f1-f2. the only reason I actually pay attention to my pet is for buffs and to use f1 for their knockdown
typically the way I kill thieves is use quickening zephyr, AA about 3-4 times, #4, then #2. it’ll down them in stealth 90% of the time, and they won’t be able to get near you before they need to stealth
(this is while using zerker trinkets and knights armor, so I AA for about 2k on crits)
@redspectrum I beg to differ, thief is the easiest class for me to kill, i’d go so far to say rangers are the bane-of-thieves with their ranged and channeled skills (and arguably large amount of CC)
Houses are one of my favorite things in a lot of games, it’d be really cool if they were to add it. possibly they could have things that can be upgraded, e.g. 1-2 extra bank slots, or a customizable fighting arena (maybe even dueling, i hear people want that) etc. etc.
2% of the playerbase lol. Where do you get your stats?
86% of all statistics on this forum are completely made up.
can I put that in my signature? I really want to put that in my signature.
OP: what others have said. if you want to talk, talk, if you’re like me and anxiety and such is “keeping” you from talking, then you really don’t have to. I run in wvw with an organised guild and more people are annoyed by me being a ranger than me not talking :P
NormalPerson: Of course you’re going to feel useless if you’re running a WvW build in a PvE environment..
that’s why i said i felt useless..? as I said, I didn’t mean it in a “rangers are bad” way, I was just answering the question :P if anything, it was more of a rant about pve not requiring diversity
thief>warrior>d/d ele>ranger>engineer>guard>staff ele>necro>mesmer
at least that’s what i’ve experienced
small group content that just feels like a warrior could replace me without any consequence
I think it’s a mistake for you to feel useless. Warriors do more damage as individuals than rangers, but rangers bring unique party support that literally makes them irreplaceable.
Over simplifying, there are only two situations where a additional warrior would be the better choice than the first ranger. 1) You suck and/or don’t know what to do, or 2) you aren’t running a meta build and are drastically bringing the party down.
On the other hand, anyone is replaceable at any time, as was the goal of Anet. One time I did a 50 or 60 something fractal with 4 rangers and a necro. It’s just not the perfect comp.
1) while i’m not great, I don’t really think i suck. for the sake of being humble i’m going to leave it there ;P
2) no, i’m not running a meta build. at least not a pve meta build. if you look around i’ve posted my build in quite a few places, but to be put shortly, i designed my build around wvw roaming, not pve. though at the same time I don’t think i’m bringing “the team” down. maybe if I was doing high level fractals or such (not sure how difficult they are) but dungeons i’ve ran seems fairly easy, so me doing bad won’t ruin the dungeon, unless they’re the “hardcore mlg uber pro speedrunners” but in that case I don’t really care if they think i’m slowing down the dungeon :P
put simply, I’m just saying I feel useless because i’m not doing anything… remarkable? notable? not sure how to put it… I mean, I could technically trait spotter and frost spirit, but I don’t feel like changing my build (I guess that’s kinda my fault, but i enjoy playing the fun way, not the most efficient way :P)
tl;dr i didn’t mean that in a “rangers are bad” way
Oh, so your f2 works every time?
Your Ranger pet turns the wrong way to “hit” an opponent?
Your downed skills knock a player down when you are downed?
-if they aren’t interrupted, blinded, and are near my target (or i detarget and hit f3→f2) yup
- for the most part, the only pet hit i care about (my wolves initial knockdown) hits near-everytime
-ranger downed skills don’t knock down, they stun. and if I’m not blinded and they don’t have stability, then yes.
try casting entangle in your spawn area, without pressing any other buttons. if it shows the animation (you jumping up then smashing the ground) then it works and it not casting was a player error on your part. either blind, they had immunity, you moved in the middle of casting, you swapped weapons (it might interrupt it, I forget) you tried casting another spell, etc. etc.
I have nearly 1k hours in wvw on my ranger and I can count the amount of times my elites have bugged out on my fingertip. underpowered? maybe. bugged? no chance.
I think tequatl and giant wurm were added to appease the people from other mmos who wanted large-group raids and stuff. I’d rather not detract from their enjoyment, rather, i’d like special drops (like http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Tequatl%27s_Hoard ) from every world boss (e.g. frozen looking ascended weapons/armors from jormag)
maybe i’m weird for thinking this, but as a semi-casual semi-hardcore gamer, I don’t expect to be able to do absolutely everything in the game :P
Bosses already have unique items which drop from them, Final Rest as an example from Shadow Behemoth. But there’s absolutely no way they’re going to add ascended gear drops from bosses like SB or The Shatterer as they currently stand. Those bosses are auto attack fests. They’re loot pinatas. The reason Wurm and Teq have those drops is they’re actually difficult and require thought. No other world boss does.
when it comes to tequatl/wurm you don’t really “need” to put in any more effort than other world bosses, you just need to be there at the right time and mooch off others ;P
that being said, ascended drops are rare enough that I doubt anyone farms say, tequatl for the ascended gear because of the stats, but moreso because of the skins. if I knew other world bosses had special skins I wouldn’t have suggested that, I guess they’re just so rare i’ve never seen one drop before :P
Now let me throw this out to the Ranger population and see what response I get.
How many of the 45 pets ingame have you used? How many times have you felt useless when you’re doing anything, be it WvW, PvP or PvE?
- throughout me playing my ranger, i’ve gone in between drakes, birds, canines, felines, spiders, and a few others probably. I enjoy the selection of pets honestly.
- in WvW, sometimes, though honestly a lot of the time it’s because I’m lagging
in PvP… eh, I don’t really pvp that much and I don’t really care about winning when I do… take that as you will
in PvE I always feel pretty useless. that’s not really to do with being a ranger though, rather than to me, pve always feels like either a) world bosses where I see no reward for my efforts or b) small group content that just feels like a warrior could replace me without any consequence
I’m a bit relunctant to say that we’re forgotten. maybe i’m an optimist but i’m under the hope that they’re taking their time to really consider everything when balancing the classes. I’d rather them do that than constantly put out buffs/nerfs that could honestly make it worse
it varies from mob to mob, but it generally is either how much dps you’re doing or how much toughness you have (or occasionally how close you are) will determine who aggros first
I think tequatl and giant wurm were added to appease the people from other mmos who wanted large-group raids and stuff.
1. I’m under the opinion that rangers are underpowered, but not by enough that you can’t balance it out by being better than your opponent. with that in mind, I think rangers are decent solo roaming, and “could” be fairly good group roaming. the only problem with group-roaming is that half the time you’ll end up being targeted first due to the image rangers have portrayed
2. It’s not perfect, but this is my build http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNUQJATRjMqUyaBLusw1ag9gadAUAnNzLYEcuFHRBbqA-TViBABA4JFca/BdU/hQdA7pJwAXSRZKBtS53JaYIFATCjA-w
3. No clue, sorry.
4. pets are categorized into species (canine, bears, jellyfish, etc.) each species has a specific moveset to it, but each individual pet has a different active skill (your F2 button). I’d experiment with all the kinds of pets, but spiders, canines, drakes, and birds are the most popular for pvp/wvw (I prefer wolf/drakehound)
5. Ranged doesn’t work well in sPvP due to the maps being somewhat close-quarters and the need to stand on points to cap
6. There was a CDI a while back that we will hopefully see changes from around sep/oct/nov
7. Whichever one you like best. races have practically no impact
I’d rather them not touch WvW at all than make changes that could possibly screw it up.
If they’re going to change something, they should take their time and do it right.
Honestly, if I didn’t enjoy the game/map/fights as-is I would have stopped playing a long time ago
honestly I consider the tickets a reward for doing the achievement set, not how well your server did. in the end, the 6 hours it took me to do the season 2 meta and be eligible for a reward had little to no impact to my servers placement.
I actually think lower server should be rewarded better. The worse your server is doing, the harder it would have been to do the meta
(not to mention this is a slap in the face to all the bandwagoners on redacted servers :P, probably why people are so kitten about it)
I think legendary rarity armor could be cool… but easily screwed up as well
I also think there are more important things to focus on at the moment.
I’m hoping they get to 50s, maybe higher :P I haven’t felt a decrease in rares at all, so it’s at no monetary loss to me (sorry folk who have a harder time getting them, but I like money too!)
“bit too little silence going on” i believe you mean “too much” ;P
all joking aside, I really like this topic. takes the words from my mouth.
+1 OP
The colors changes every week
just saying, the colors don’t change every week, it’s mostly based on how well you’re predicted to do based on your servers glicko… or something. (red is predicted loser, green winner, and blue is in between)
as for my advice, just play wvw and you’ll get there. if anything pull an all nighter and do it on off hours. depending on your tier you might be able to solo-ram down anything you need. I was able to do 100% on the lowest tier of EU, so it’s not impossible
as long as the ranger gets it and it’s skills are puns on farming (the original use of a scythe). I would be extremely amused by that.
but seriously, scythes are cool. it’s why I main evie in vindictus :P
I’m ok with everything but the last bit of the op, AS LONG as it allows them to produce more and/or better content than they did before
as for the last part, no. I don’t feel like buying something just to have a chance at winning in wvw, it’s practically (or literally) p2w, which generally makes me die off a game really quickly (and that’s coming from someone who has put in over $100 in gw2 because I’ve enjoyed some of the content they’ve produced)
and @some other people
just because it’s technically free to get gems doesn’t mean people don’t have a right to complain. If it takes me 100 hours to get something that someone else can get by paying $10, I’m going to consider that pretty dumb on the companies part.
getting comfortable with my new wvw guildies
farming for my legendary (only like 400g away!)
leveling an alt
being sleepy
crashing
Wouldn’t be an issue if it was trade-able. :/
I’d be ok with this, though I doubt it would sell for much at all sadly. I wouldn’t be surprised if it went for 1c a piece… still, I would have probably trashed like 50s worth :P
I like to think of guild wars 2’s ranger as the DnD4e ranger, with the ability to put their focus into either ranged attacks, close ranged attacks with swords, or the ability to pick up a pet and become a beastmaster. it feels like everything that was intended with this profession (I even rolled a ranger in dnd that’s nearly identical to my gw2 ranger :P)
I hate to be a jerk, but I have to agree with those above, though I have a few tips
1. if you’re planning on doing any organized group stuff in wvw, you probably don’t want to pick a ranger or engi, and probably not a thief either. they’re kinda the “left out” classes that don’t fit as good as other classes (if it weren’t for my guild liking me so much they would never have let me run with them on my ranger :P)
2. you said “Best mobility” so i’m assuming that’s what you’re looking for (you’re not giving me much to go off of :/) Warriors are popular for their mobility, but personally I don’t enjoy them because they just feel.. simple. I know mesmers have fairly low mobility, but past that most classes have certain builds that get around fast
3.“Best features (in terms of legendaries and other aesthetics? (Note race too plz” no offence, but how are we supposed to answer that? that boils down to personal opinion. play the game, find what you like the most. just like I’m dead set on getting kudzu, you might want to get, say, xanthium, which neither longbow-wielding classes can use.
if you really want to get detailed information about classes and such, state what you enjoy doing and such. just saying “give me a class i’ll like” won’t help because every class is good in their own ways
I never really had a problem with ascended mats, but if other people have problems getting it I’m ok with boosting the drop rate, AS LONG as there’s more space to put it somewhere. I’ve probably trashed a good 5k of each type simply because there’s nowhere to put it when you’re saving your silver
If you want to draw attention from anything other than trolls, I would go more in depth into what the problem is and how you would like to fix it. right now your post is just flame-bait.
I don’t have a build or a video, but general ideas from a front line ranger who runs occasionally with organized groups.
first of all, solo builds and group builds are and should be completely different. different situations call for different tactics
second, it’s common knowledge that condi builds are near-useless in groups/zergs
I like putting 6 into the wilderness tree for the bark skin, and at least 4 into nature magic
if you think you can use a sword/x in a zerg you are sadly mistaken. greatsword is the best (only?) choice if you’re commanding/front lining. Longbow with piercing arrows is good if you are sticking with the lights in your composition, though I think rangers preform better frontline.
and this part is coming from someone who hasn’t commanded in wvw, so this may be wrong, but imo commanders should focus completely on defense and only offense when they run out of defensive options. especially with pug groups, as soon as the commander drops, your team will fall apart quickly/slowly. your job is to lead
I’m not sure what server you’re on but my server offers commander training, perhaps there’s something like that where you are? there’s bound to be someone with knowledge on it.
as for solo-ing… even though I solo roam a lot, most of my advice would just be complex forms of the dreaded “l2p”. as for thieves, which from that last bit sounds like a problem you have, longbow can wreck their faces. remember that channeled skills will go straight through stealth, and rapid fire can hit 10k+ even with a semi-tanky build. if you can predict when they will drop shadow refuge, or when they heal and such, be sure to pbs them. as well if they drop that blinding aoe no-where near you, as 9 times out of 10, they’re going to heartseeker through it for stealth
p.s. if you really want to, I can give you my current hybrid build that works decently for both solo roaming and group oriented things (though granted, I use different traits when in a group), but I have a feeling you probably won’t care for it (most people i’ve recommended it to in game just trash it. which is surprising since most people ask me because they saw me owning someone :/)
note: this may come off as a bit braggart-y, but I don’t mean it that way :P I just got really lucky
Solo-ing 7 people (not sure if pve karma-training or cheese build, regardless I don’t think they knew what they were doing) via kiting and point blank shot + wolf fear. best part was when I knocked one off a cliff and downed them on a ledge, and like 3 of the group decided to jump off the cliff to res. Rampage as One + Point blank shot slaughtered them :P
It cost me about 100g as well to get from 400-500. though a good 25 levels of that was via ascended mats (bloodstone/empyreal/dragonite)
maybe it’s because I’ve been farming for a legendary, but it doesn’t feel too bad to me. I enjoyed doing it, though I semi regret it (I got 500 huntsman specifically and only for an ascended longbow, but now i’m only a precursor away from kudzu so maybe it would have been better if I didn’t was all that money :P)
the signet of stone + signet of the beastmaster is (no offence intended) training wheels.
if you need it to survive, then go ahead and replace RTW and Lightning reflexes. I at one point used that too. but once you get the hang of the ranger, I cannot stress enough that you don’t need it to survive, and you will preform much better replacing it with more useful skills/traits (RTW and Lightning reflexes, in my build)
samoith pig is fun
but well.. someone got a nice power build for me? pvp/roaming
couldnt rly find one, preferably with a gs
this is the build I use when I roam in WvW
It’s not perfect min-max meta build style, but I enjoy playing with it
I honestly really enjoy the new living story design. I spend most of my time in wvw, so I usually don’t complete the living story during the 2 weeks it’s available
I think most people just come on the forums to rage at a-net. that or they’re just extremely negative people… I’m not sure :P
The only reason it seems like there is more skimpy armor, is because more people use it, not because there is more.
I was just about to post that
I normally would be indifferent on the subject, but as you can see both in game and by the people on the forums who obviously see a whole lot more skimpy armor in game (not saying there are more skimpy options. just more people using the skimpy options), if more skimpy options were in place then it would just resolve to even more people wearing skimpy armor
I’d still like to be able to wear all armor-types on one profession (if anything, just limit it so if you have a piece of light armor equipped, you can only wear light armor for the other 5 pieces). I mean, we can already battle in town clothes now (I enjoy wvw roaming in a wintersday outfit)
though, all in all, I don’t really care if it’s added or not. Nothing about this game sparks out as “super realistic” to me, so it wouldn’t really affect me.
WvW exclusive ascended armor (or just skins) for high badge costs (2500-5000 a piece, perhaps. well within limits for anyone who is a dedicated wvwer)
Personally I don’t want anything “too” good for wvw though. don’t want all the pve-ers queueing up wvw and trying to karma train while dedicated wvwers are actually trying to win
@Nymph of Meliai
I have about 4k badges on hand atm, and about 20 of every siege on hold (including golems) the thing is, siege is so cheap that practically every commander is in surplus of them.
so it’s a one-shot wonder build? inb4 blind/aegis/invuln/blocks :P
all joking aside, you were probably blinded, or they had aegis/stability. most wvw roamers are smart enough to use that so they can stomp before a zerg roflstomps that area
Horn is decent. It’s also nice for getting around (I usually use gs/lb but I always have a horn in my inventory for using swiftness)
I hear if you use the horn #4 after Rampage as One, you’ll get a whole lot of might stacks on your pet. I’ve never really used it myself though (as said, I prefer gs/lb)
if I were you, I’d just pick whichever one you enjoyed the most
EDIT: though honestly from what I’ve seen, practically all the offhands for rangers are pretty decent.
…I see nothing against putting it in the options menu, aside from maybe wasting the devs time, but I highly doubt it would take very long at all to add
