Suggestion: Trait Reset-more toxic behavior?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

I think in the long run it is better that we can trait wherever. Why? I think ArenaNet can make more interesting instances going forward and new permanent zones and also LS content because they can greatly vary the types of enemies we encounter so that we would want to change up our builds mid-dungeon for example in order to better negotiate a totally different encounter from the one we were previously at. That to me is better than having them only in major cities. Also, don’t group with people like that. Group with like-minded people.

My made up quote from the dev blog tomorrow, “Here at ArenaNet we feel like all of these things in the feature pack going live on April 15th are all working together in a synergized fashion to give us the most solid foundation for our core game going forward. Now that all the building blocks are in place we can go ahead and announce the release of 5 new maps. 3 maps are for our level 80 players and 2 maps are for our ‘middle game’ and are in the level 40-60 range. These maps will open up season 2 along with our newest playable race: The Tengu.”

Who am I kidding. Everything besides the solid foundation for our core game will not be a part of the announcement to morrow :P

IMO, they want you to BUY GEMS with RLM and convert to gold to make IGM, very sad we can’t make and obtain gold/items/mats just by playing the game, so sad.

Totally farcical statement. It is beyond easy to make money in this game. You should state your real opinion: You personally are not getting as much money as you want to get.

I really hope that you guys can answer if we will still be able to freely —without gem or gold charge-- still change our PvP armor and weapons whenever we want. Are the items in our locker still there for us to use like they were before. I don’t mind having to transmute the items from PvP over to PvE and vice versa, but I do still want to have access to the skins I earned by playing PvP in PvP for free.

I can’t wait for the rewards discussion. After a month of shoddy rewards, the 15th will be a breath of fresh air.

I also can’t wait to see all the PvE’ers with their Legendaries in PvP. I am gonna start roleplaying in PvP that I am just a proletariat fighting off the Bourgeois horde trying to take my lands from me by force. I may start wearing standard PvP starter armor to reinforce my RP’ing.

No Rewards For PvP

in PvP

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806
+1. If you’re honestly saying you’re fine with no reward system in PvP other than gold, which is essentially useless for pvp-only players atm… you’re not a pvp player.

There’s no reason to have removed glory until a new system was implemented. The only issue I can assume would have to do with the wardrobe and a potential exploitation of the PvP locker by PvE players trying to fill their wardrobe quickly through glory unlocks. Even then… that’s a pretty lackluster reasoning for the removal of a reward system of an entire aspect of the game. You can buy skins and gear with Badges of Honor… I didn’t see them remove that reward system.

The real issue, however, is dye manufacturing. With the removal of unidentified dye as loot, pvp players could have potentially driven the dye market through Mystic Forge production. However, the flip side of this concept reveals a pretty substantial gap in the planning process – The solely pvp oriented player base now has no means of acquiring dyes. That’s a substantial problem for any player joining the game after the patch that is interested in playing pvp exclusively.
^This is exactly why. It’s too bad that we had to spend an entire month+ not getting rewarded decently for playing PvP. It’s frustrating. I am stoked for the changes, but not stoked that there was such a large gap between reward systems. PvPers deserved more forethought by ArenaNet on this one and all we got was, “Wait and see. You will like it.”

Lets Discuss: Factions

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iason Evan.3806

Iason Evan.3806

The concept of having factions, or the idea I will propose or take up for discussion, is the idea of our character being able to join a certain group or order that somehow impacts the world around them.
- I’ve written about this a good while back.
A post I read recently suggesting that it would be nice if we could join the Seraph brought it back to me as an option that should be weighed.

First off: Why would we want factions?
- Think of it as part of your character progression. The people you meet, who you make friends with and who you become enemies with. You don’t choose it from the very beginning. It is something that evolves through the game as you progress.
- RP’ers would probably love it, because it can help them define their character.
- If the faction have unique rewards, like unique weapon and armor skins, it would also appeal to other types of players. It adds to customization, if you will.

What will it add to the game?
- Well, as said, there was this guy suggesting that it would be nice if we could join the Seraph. Lets take that as an example:
- Players can join the Seraph, but maybe that is not for every player. Some wants to be the bad guy, the bandits and thieves that plague the streets of Divinity’s Reach and the roads of Kryta (I know my characters are far from what the Personal Story describes them as).
There are these “Assault/Defend” Dynamic Events around the Open World. Well, what if players can pitch in from either side, depending on where their loyalties lie?
- Help the Seraph and gain status with them, or help the bandits and gain status with them (of course, if you help the bandits, the Seraph will not be pleased, and your status with them decreases).

- There can be race specific factions like the Seraph/Bandits, Inquest/Peace Keepers, Charr/Flame Legion – Just to throw some suggestions out there.

Flagged for PvP?
- A huge issue to a lot of you, I’m sure. I didn’t enjoy playing WoW and then getting killed by some random player of the opposite faction who just happened to pass by with epic loot and a thirst for blood.
So lets discuss it: When should players be flagged for PvP in the Open World?
- My own suggestion, as I think it fits the game better, is that we have a “Factions” panel where we can set “At War” with, say, the Seraph, and then when a Dynamic Event pops up we fight alongside the bandits (and vice versa).
- I don’t think there should be a “flagged for PvP” in the Open World, unless it is in these Dynamic Events, because a lot of the content is designed for players to come together… like fighting against centaurs in Harathi Hinterlands, or fighting World Bosses.
- Being able to fight other players in certain Dynamic Events would truly make them Dynamic. And it would be enjoyable since it is exclusively during these events.
People will have to look out for when opposing players might trigger the event to try and take over the strategic points (which could add buffs to your faction, or decide when you can get unique weapon/armor skins from your faction quartermaster).

In closing
- As I said, I wanted to take this suggestion up for discussion as a way of doing it. Sure, it’s not something making its way into the game anytime soon, but if it’s something the players want, we can discuss how to best implement it.
- I’m not a PvP’er myself, but I like the idea because it doesn’t mean that other players can “grief” me. Rather, it is a way for my character to progress, and a way for me to immerse myself in the world (just in case people would be like "Nuh uh, you’re just a PvP’er who wants to make life hard for the rest of us in the Open World. Stay in the WvW and sPvP)

- So bring the feedback. Do you like it or not? Why? Or maybe you have something to add or a different way to do it, which might be better overall.
Feedback is, as always, welcome.

Your faction is your server. Seems cut and dried to me. That way there is no competition on a server. Only cooperation. If you want competition, play pvp or WvW. It’s a great way to do it.

Sometimes I wish they would leave things considered “OP” by the solo queue crowd (me) alone and bring some of the other lines up to snuff with those to give players more viable options. I just want build options. It’s a stark contrast to GW1, where I had dozens of viable options in RA for each class. Some less than others, but we had way more options for each profession in that game.

Why PvP Crafting Mats for Daily Still?

Iason Evan.3806

Thanks for the response!

I also hear what people are saying about still needing mats to complete some stuff, but if you need mats, the better way to get it is spend some remaining Glory on gold, silver, or bronze chests from the vendor and get mats back. The daily rewards 1 crafting item. The boxes give multiple items which give the chance at multiple mats. I feel like if the Glory is done and the crafting is going away, then we need to move toward a reward system that fully reflects that.

Agreed. I mean, if you really want to delete all your level 80’s that you already have geared so that you can go and re-level, buy all that gear again and all you are doing is going to beat the Risen High Wizard for the 50th time…

Why not just go and accomplish the things for the traits? If you did the task, you earned the trait.

Also, if you have all your characters at level 80, you have the gold to buy the character slots instead of using real money to buy gems. It’s the genius of ArenaNet’s implementation. It’s good for them and good for players.

Seeing as unid’d dye is like 65s atm, that doesn’t hold water really. All the dyes that aren’t Abyss make up for it if you sell them unid’d. IDK. Much better to look at it the optimistic way: You are unlocking all the cool dyes you have for all your toons. I think that is a much better outlook.

While that would be useful for reasonable people, reasonable people aren’t the majority of sPvP. So much flaming would occur because of that and so much trolling would occur with people speccing garbage stuff just to make people mad. Re-rolling based on traits being account bound is a moot point now. Why? because of the way we have to transmute armor and weapons now with the feature build. Unless you plan on spending a lot of your gold or hard earned real world cash —and time to re-unlock traits again-— you aren’t going to delete toons anymore. One of the initial draws that gamers see with GW2 is that there is no barrier to entry for PvP. I don’t have to get to a certain level like other games, I don’t have to earn skills in PvE so I can play PvP. This is all gone now because this shift in design occurred.

Feedback/Questions: Town clothes, Costumes, & Combat

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

If they work like the halo, and we can still have those pieces of clothing, I’d be happy enough.

You’d be happy if every time you zoned, you had to double-click on 3 tonics in your bag to, say, put a shirt, shorts and boots back on? :|

I actually run around the world, in many cases, in my town clothes, if I’m gathering, or taking a long walk to, say, Frostgorge. Going into combat knocks them off, but after that’s over, a quick bound ‘shift-z’ toggles my town clothes back on again and off I go.

With this new system, I’d have to ‘shift-z’, which would make me naked, and then double click on 3 items in my bag to put my clothes back on?

I’m going to miss my characters. It just keeps piling up and piling up, little things that just don’t make any sort of sense, and them not caring about us at all as they march ahead and make posts about collaboration and demand we treat them with respect.

It’s the iPhone only available at AT&T. It’s awful.

3 double clicks being a hassle is beyond my comprehension as being a “hard task”.

I play a lot of PvE as well as PvP so I don’t re-roll because of PvE. If I only played PvP though I would re-roll a ton because what is the use of the locker and also, because re-rolling is one of the perks of being a PvP only player.

One of two things should happen in the patch with choice #1 being preferable:

1.) PvP Traits should just be unlocked. Period. End of story. You don’t have a philosophy shift and not honestly explain to the players why you did so. At least if you honestly explain to players why the change was made, you communicated it to us and whether or not we agree is a moot point. Honest communication sans PR spin goes a long way in assuaging certain issues in all things.

2.) If #1 can’t be changed and is set in stone then you make a system for PvP players to unlock said traits in PvP and once the traits are unlocked, they are unlocked on the account permanently.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Tie-Earning-New-Traits-into-a-Tutorial/first#post3785486

I made this post a few days ago. PvP needs a tutorial. Playing in hot join is totally different from playing in solo queue which is totally different from playing in Team Queue. The issue? Players go from hot join playing in the exact fashion they play in hot join in solo queue. I also changed my opinion about PvP having unlocks because of what was said by devs about PvP being equal ground. I really think that philosophy shift by you guys should have had an explanation laid out by the development team. Changes are one thing. Same with philosophical shifts. Not explaining that to the player base though definitely warrants a little consternation on the consumer’s part. There are a lot of us that put a lot of time into the game for enjoyment and having the way we play get fundamentally changed without an explanation isn’t the best on your guys’s end. Communication goes a long way. Even if we disagree with why you guys did it, at least it was communicated and we can’t get mad about trust being dulled because of lack of transparency.

I also think that not putting in a system of unlocking these traits via PvP was a mistake. Forcing the players to either play a format they don’t want to play or pay money wasn’t the way to go. This also doesn’t help new players. There are traits in there that they will not have access to before level 80. They won’t be able to afford it either if they are on their first character. That’s the epitome of vertical progression. You can’t get something in PvP until you reach a certain point in PvE or attain a certain amount of coin. Builds will be off limits to those players. I can only say I disagree with the decision because no one from ArenaNet has said why the philosophy shift happened in the first place. Because of that, I can’t have a logical discussion until I can discern why it happened.

It’s frustrating man, and I hope you can see why it is frustrating for many of us.

Iason Evan.3806

So, let’s say we wanted to look into decap engineer, where would we start? I’ve heard a few different opinions on the topic, and I have a few opinions of my own as someone who has played against decap in top 100 rated solo/team arena games and also played the build myself.

In the same way that it was difficult to look at the September ’13 Hambow warrior and point out a single specific key to its strength, I think decap engineer is much the same.

I think it’s important to understand the areas in our game where decap engineer is strong, and then go from there:

  • Conquest
    • Situations where communication is difficult (solo arena)
    • Against teams that have difficulty rotating appropriately

So, with the above in mind, what are some ‘low-hanging fruit’ type of suggestions for changing the way decap engineer works, without affecting existing builds unrelated to decap? That is to say, suggestions that would not require significant amounts of development time to implement.

We’ve already seen a few threads on PW, so I’ll focus on decap for now. ^^

It’s mainly a problem in solo queue. There is zero prob with decap at mid in Foefire for obvious reasons. I think if you decreased how far the knockback was it would fix it while still giving Engies the ability to CC. I like the fact that positional play is rewarded from an offensive and defensive standpoint. CC classes keep people honest on points. I think the Ranger needs more CC like the Engie, but if the Engies were toned down like I was saying above. Limit the range of the knockback and you are in business.

Most great coaches and GM’s were fairly “journeyman” like in their playing quality like Rudy T., Phil Jackson, Coach K., Steve Kerr, Danny Ainge etc. All the great players couldn’t hold a candle to those guys when it came to tactics.

Game design has zero to do with how good playing ability is. Look at Seth Killian. Really good Street Fighter player, but the best players own him. Doesn’t matter. He does some of the best balance work in all of gaming for Street Fighter.

Celestial gear in PvP had incorrect stat distribution so we’re increasing its effectiveness to be proportional to the new PvE values. This should open up more build diversity and allow you to bring your builds from other areas in the game into PvP.”

As Roy mentioned in another thread, all the current traits will remain unlocked in PvP, even for new players. It is only new traits that need to be unlocked, and you will not have to PvE to obtain them.

Also, this system is designed for horizontal progression. Unlocking traits, or what have you, won’t (at least shouldn’t, barring any balance issues) make you more powerful, they simply give you a wider range of builds and allow you to better tune your character to your play style. Many, many successful games ease players into options, and, in my opinion, trait unlocking isn’t any different.

I am happy that you are active on forum but this statement is completely opposite to what was promised when it comes to spvp.
“All players will stand on equal footing, with only personal skill difference, from the very moment they step into spvp”.

If player A has more traits to choose from then player B, player B is in disadvantage if one of the missing traits turns to be stronger then other available, or necessary for build fitting meta. Your point would only ever be valid if all permutations of all possible builds were equally powerful in the same settings(meta+role). That is not possible and so gating some skills and traits does put new players in disadvantage – given that the new skills/traits are actually worth picking.

I have to agree with this. People that play only pvp like to re-roll when they get bored with a character’s looks. In this game they totally have that option. It’s a draw for the game. With this system, they can’t do it. Even if you make it so profession unlocks are account bound, it does seem to go against the original intent of the design of pvp.

I had a post where I suggested that you tie unlocking these for pvp in with a tutorial since there are so many players that don’t seem to get how the mechanics of maps work. My idea is probably bad though now that I think about it because of the original statement by ArenaNet that PvP is equal footing for all.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Tie-Earning-New-Traits-into-a-Tutorial/first#post3785486 I thought this would be a good idea, but now I think that it’s not all that great in the spirit of what PvP is supposed to be. We need a tutorial, but not at the expense of pvp having traits hidden behind unlocks.

My only issue with unlocks in PvP is that you have to do it every single time for each character of the same profession.

Someone who enjoys playing with several race-profession combinations will have to unlock the same skill for each of them every single time. Which can feel rather tedious.

Progression that can be fine and fun multiplied by repetition can become unenjoyable grind.

In GW1, when you unlocked anything in PvP (either playing, paying with Balthazar faction, or buying the unlock in the store), it was unlocked for the entire account, from equipment upgrades to ranger pets.

In GW2, if you have several characters of the same profession for whatever reason, you will have to remember which one had the skills and traits unlocked, or unlock all of them in them all.

Instead, unlocking something in PvP should get it unlocked for all characters of the same profession in PvP, and reduce the cost for other characters in PvE.

For example, when unlocking Defiant Stance with a warrior, all other warriors should get Defiant Stance in PvP with no additional cost or effort, and reduce the cost from 30 skill points to 5 for the skill in PvE.

But your tag says, “Unlocks are always better. No exceptions.”

They. Don’t. Care. About. PvP. Only. Players.

I would argue that Justin taking the time to have a conversation with players (many of whom were being outright rude) between 11:45 PM and 12:45 AM is pretty awesome. How many of us would do that for our place of employment?

[PvX] Guardian, all new GM traits are trash

I have always thought that Guards were the one class that was in the best spot across all formats in perspective of the other classes. They seem the most reasonable is what I mean. This 3k trait in relation to the other four GM traits it’s getting could end up being really nice. Also, try and think about it in conjunction with the new ammy(ies) we are getting in spvp.

My post is fairly reasonable and level headed though so I imagine it will get ignored in favor of someone yelling in all caps for no reason.

Traits only unlocked by PvE?

It’s actually a quite elegant fix if you think about it:

GW2 solved the issue of PvP players being at a disadvantage to PvE players by separating PvP and PvE gear. However, the problem it created was a lack of rewards to strive for.

By attaching new talents as rewards, it allows players to still PvP without being at a gear disadvantage while still giving them something to work towards.

Yes, newer players will have less traits to compete with, but newer players are also learning the game/their profession, so a limit of options isn’t that problematic.

A similar system existed in GW1 and it was one of the reasons that GW1 PvP has such a strong legacy.

No, this is not the type of “reward” PVP players want. No one wants to have to unlock new traits and skills as a “reward”. That is no reward that is making you work for something that you should have in the first place. This is going backwards, NOT an “elegant fix” at all.

Now if they want to make it so that we can unlock these traits for PVE in PVP, that’s fine by me, but access to skills/gear/traits/etc etc in PVP should not be restricted by unlocks. That’s not the type of progression PVP players want.

its the same like in gw1.. my only problem with this:

all the unlocks are characterbound! at least make them accountbound.

Maybe, but it wouldn’t make a huge difference unless you have a bunch of characters of the same profession. =P

not really. the advantage of pvp is to delete old and create new one with other looks or races.. in gw1 you could always delete your char and had still all the account-unlocks. i done it regularly to get new looks on my pvp-chars. always the same is boring. but with this we are stuck

This is a great point that I didn’t think about. Maybe once it is unlocked for an account then it is unlocked for good? This kinda goes with how I want profession based ranks for accounts. That way my Warrior’s rank doesn’t mess with my Ele’s rank on the leaderboard and if I delete a character, all those characters have the same rank. The one advantage I see with adding this though is it will be a pain for people to buy alternate accounts during ladder tourneys if they ever make them. I think that is a good thing to make it a pain for players who are really good to try and go in a lower division and win that bracket.

This is why I like the Fractal Weapons best of all. You can’t sell them, have to get them as drops and that’s it. Dusk, I suggest you just start collecting Fractal Weapons.
