@Chuo – very good points. It’s much nicer on paper; implementation/integration is very tough.
I saw a post mentioning a Dungeon that was randomized: position, attacks, etc.
I think this is a good basis to start from but the AI is what is lacking.
Adding in a giant health pool or insta-kill attacks is how most MMO’s make up for a lack in AI.
There is a combat log and a boss could be programmed to access that log in order to vary it’s attacks. If everyone is damaging it via ranged attacks, it could use a counter and the players would have to switch to melee or a combination of both. They already have agro programmed in various ways, it’s not a stretch to think they couldn’t design at least the boss AI in a similar fashion. Force the players to think their way through not rush or dps it.
The loss of the trinity took away roles and was replaced with skills which are under-utilized.
Make bosses barely phased by normal damage unless it’s coupled with a particular condition damage. Have a boss that is particularly susceptible to ranger pets, to poison, to bleeding, to fire, confusion, minions, clones, engi kits, etc. Reward players for out-thinking the bosses.
If a group of zerker warriors want to beat that boss down for 30minutes they can. Yet if a necro, ranger, engi, goes up against the boss and its susceptible to just one of them; it takes 5minutes while the rest of the team is using ranged, melee, buffing, debuffing etc.
It’s easier to zerk/dps your way through than to come up with a strategy. It’s also allowable to zerk your way through and skip the trash.
A dungeon that takes over an hour to complete is not necessarily challenging or fun or even hard. It may just be a tedious bore-fest.
A 20minute dungeon that has you sweating and cursing and finally sighing in relief with your heart still racing<—-that’s a challenge.

That said, it is also an ArenaNet recognized issue on their end.
Also want to say that it doesnt necessarily “do nothing.” The skills DO tend to blink at you! Almost.. tauntingly.
Oh! This skill? The one thats blinking? This is the one you want? Are you sure? Ill blink it a couple more times just to MAKE SURE this is what you want! blink blink Are you sure this is the right skill to use here? Like, really totally sure? blink blink See, player, you dont need to heal when you are dead!
I tell you this now, just as a warning.. this was foretold in the movie Terminator. This is the rise of the machines. The.. Skillpocalypse.

Well it is kind of ironic that the ‘casual’ or what I call the working/have families/play in their limited spare time; are the ones who throw money at the gemstore more often, because they can afford to. Yet they are not really rewarded because of their limited time.
You can bark: do speed runs, mega boss runs by guesting, etc. And sure they are lucrative but not at all ‘my kind of fun’.
Should a game company cater to my kind of fun? Absolutely not. All types of play styles should be catered to.
And a 15min speed run is not challenging hard or fun. However a 15minute dungeon filled with challenging bosses and adds that use an intelligent/evolving form of AI could be all three. A short dungeon where everything has to be cleared and if you and your team don’t play ‘smart’ with concerted effort, you will die.
It doesn’t have to have high HP, insta-kills, or take hours to complete to be hard, challenging or fun.
Hopefully this was still enough ‘on’ topic.

Though I have plenty of purchases of 3 or 4 of them back in October when I was creating my first lvl80 exo set. They cost me 13s each. So I don’t know how accurate spidy is. At least its an average of the price increase/decrease over time.

I love how half the suggestions and demands in this thread are things that Anet has already said are going to happen before this goes live like a month ago lol.
1. They have already said they are going to cap the infinite achievement point thing and remove the points from those who have extreme numbers.
2. They already said they are working on a system to turn the points into a currency that you can spend for vanity items/titles.
1 – agreed
2 – questionable
My point was that they said the reward would not be laurels. -Colin. Okay. In an interview on Forbes (March 12th 2013) Isaiah Cartwright alluded to the fact that there were already enough currencies in place and that the future would be more about polishing the current reward systems. So…..
I only wonder if the leader boards is our reward for achievement points.

1- Dungeons do need a middle ground and rewards should be scaled to difficulty. I believe that the minute they nerf the ability to do speed runs in dungeons; you will see an outcry for this. I personally don’t have the time commitment for running a dungeon and I do not like speed runs. Clearing a dungeon should be about literally clearing a dungeon. So if they put in tiers it should satisfy all the types of players from casual —>hardcore
2- The economy is suffering from an influx of gold with no desirable gold sinks to take the gold back out. I have 3 level 80 characters, played since BW and have amassed 44G. Now I crafted two exotic sets but I still don’t have the ectos to make those full sets +trinkets. I feel your pain not being able to afford to re-spec your char for different purposes.
3-This one is obvious. I was in a medium sized guild that got axed in half. I still don’t know why. We started over and unless something happens in the next patch it will be at least a month or more to qualify for a mission. I donated 4G of that 44G to give us influence when we started over. Like I could afford it, but it was for a good cause.
And of the people I personally know that left GW2, they were hardcore PvPers. I personally can only handle WvW. I get too excited and began smashing buttons instead of thinking. Sorry for injecting my personal experience into each point, just thought it would help.

So, does anyone else see this leaderboard as a way to ‘reward’ achievement points and at the same time divert attention away from ‘not rewarding’ achievement points?
I mean at one point there was a discussion about rewarding achievement points with ‘something’ once they capped the infinite means of getting points. Then there was silence on the issue.
So is this our reward for our achievement points?
PS-I’m not meaning to divert this discussion about point disparity between new and old players.

^^This.
CoF p1: time allotted for speed run 15-20min, guaranteed rare from tokens, alts can do it too. Chests not so profitable but entire run is better than dragon drops.
MegaBoss events: 1 guaranteed rare, no alts.
IF they ever nerf the speed runs of dungeons they will have to fix the open world lag/overflow issues. They will have to spread people out for rewards.
Expanding the rewards to long event chains on multiple maps of multiple levels will help immensely spreading people around.
Economy may suffer?
No not if they add gold sinks for armor/weapons that are already in the game on multiple types of char/genders. Regional armor/weapons such as branded, ascalonian, etc.
Mini-pets, pets for gold from specific NPC’s that only show up if you complete the chain. I’d save 100g for a rockdog pet or a griffon pet sold by an ogre.
Put in more rare lootable weapons/armor on event bosses. Unique weapons/armor that people hunt for. Put them on events that see very little action and require a bit of time to complete. A miniscule drop rate won’t matter to some (The hunt for Final Rest).
Synch the mega boss timers as close as possible to limit guesting. Or tie them to event chains so that one must participate in prior events.
No more punitive solutions please.

The video is accurate for me in PvE.
In WvW it’s a stranger mix. I will get this kind of instant apparition of people near me like that you showed in the video, while if I look in the distance I’ll see a player running without a designation of enemy or friend.
Main drive is SSD, secondary is hybrid drive, 8GB RAM, 2GB vRAM dual ati’s.
From what I understand of the WvW patch that is coming, the dev’s are offloading the culling to be controllable via the client. Basically if the machine can handle it you can designate the amount of culling yourself.

My experience was in Blazenridge on Blackgate server last night at about 8pm EST. (about server reset time) When I did get into Blazenridge it was a bit laggy even without anyone around. Pretty sure there was no dragon on the map at the time either.
Then again trying to get to Lion’s Arch at about 8:15PM EST.
Typically I have no lag unless there is a dragon event or huge zergs meet & greet in WvW.

Ask yourself ‘why’ is it you feel you need to get the daily done.
For me, before laurels, the daily was an afterthought. Unless I needed Karma for something I didn’t actively try to accomplish it.
Now I ‘feel’ I need to do them to get a laurel. Yes it’s not required but I still feel compelled.
I think the reason for me is that I don’t run dungeons and I don’t do fractals. My guild is at least a month or two away from missions. So to get ascended anything it will be laurels or nada.
Do I need ascended? Maybe. I like to jump in WvW and play there for a bit whenever I have the chance. I also have two alts that I like to take to WvW to mix it up. Two of them have a mix of rare & crafted exotics and the other masterwork/greens
I don’t have any ascended equips but I would like to get them in the ‘not so distant’ future.

I got caught in some kind of loading screen purgatory last night when trying to play. Almost an entire 15 minutes. Then when I finally got control of my character I decided to WP back to Lion’s Arch. Bad move. I got stuck a second time in that weird realm and I only waited 8 minutes before I alt-tabbed out and stopped the game externally.
While playing the lag was noticeable but not too horrible. I think prime time has become a bad time to get online. I haven’t been on much today to give an opinion of the NA server I’m on.

In WvW I came to the top of a cliff and looked down to see a single downed player. There were plenty of others standing beside me looking down there but doing nothing. So the idiot I am, I jumped down and started reviving the guy. He types…. “It’s a trap”
So I got him to 90% when I was finally attacked by a single stealthed thief. I fought back and was doing pretty well at only lvl65. Unfortunately the thief was only the first one to ‘unstealth’. I was surrounded and subsequently destroyed.
No one came to rev either of us. So I wp’ed and finished rev’ing him. He said thx and gj killing the thief.
At the time I didn’t think I’d killed anyone let alone two people (shiny bags I lost when I wp’ed); it looked more like a massive slaughter of me.
My favorite was the only dungeon I have done. AC, I think the boss is Koehler? Anyway I thought I would be cute and hide behind a pillar when he threw out that nasty pull ability. It didn’t work. These rocks are magically transparent and I got pulled right through them to end up in the water below. At least I lived

Dungeon tokens are a form of currency in GW2. There are plenty of non-currency items that will fill your bank slots currently, any cooks/chefs out there?
Anet should make a separate UI section for currencies of all types, especially if the list is going to continue to grow.
Devs: Trait Challenge Issued
It’s a Band-Aid fix. Simple and easy to implement.
It does not address the glaring issues that will still be present.
Lag will happen anytime a large number of the player base is in the same area, as will overflow. Rewards are still dismal for a lot of the content. The players will still congregate in the most rewarding areas of the game because there is no other good source of income.
Wait until they change CoF to be more ‘challenging’. And where will all those players go?
I don’t run CoF or any other dungeons, I didn’t do the dragon/mega boss events unless I was in the area. (translates to about 3 times total). I don’t farm, been there done that, and it just sucked the fun away quickly.
I don’t agree with this only because it didn’t address the core issues and limiting player’s options is not always the best solution. Expand them.
They could have easily changed the loot tables on plenty of long event chains in other maps. There are plenty of ignored maps and mega bosses in other areas that would finally see some players. Synching the timers, even if not exactly, would have limited the amount of guesting. And those that enjoy fractals are right about the higher levels needing higher rewards.
As it is, the best path to making income is a dungeon run that takes 15min to complete. Nerf the dragon events, fine, then nerf the speed runs too… but buff the harder event chains and high difficulty dungeons.
If they are worried about the economy, they should be working on some desirable gold sinks that players are begging for. New weapons, armor, skins, mini-pets, pets, etc. People will sink their gold into oblivion for some good content.
Give Megadestroyer and other unique bosses, some kind of unique armor & weapons that are rare drops… People love hunting for the rare weapons & armor.
We needed creative solutions not uninspired ones.

Knee-Jerk Fix = what we have just gotten
I just don’t think punishing alt’s is the way to go.
In case this isnt super obvious by now Anet does not like alts, and by design makes them very difficult to play and keep geared.
Dyes announced as account bound before release, turns out to be character bound.
Announced no gear treadmill, less than 90 days after release start rolling out next tier of gear.
Laurels being account bound/daily bound and limited to 1/day even if you havew 10 alts, only way to obtain next tier of gear.
This new chest nerf.
Its very obvious to anyone paying attention Anet for whatever reason just does not like alts.
Sadly alt’s are my endgame. I never ran around looking for these Mega Bosses but it was nice to catch a couple of them and get rewarded for the fight. I will say that the Frozen Maw was ridiculously short and should have had his HP boosted or put in more adds.
Being that I am not a dungeon runner I liked having the option. But I thought from the start that Anet should have boosted the big event chains around all the maps. The mega bosses should have not been the only rewarding content boosted in the prior patch. It was a recipe for huge crowds showing up for the rewards.
So many options for Anet to choose from to mitigate the damage and they chose a nerf. And the TP has already responded to the announcement.
I have 40G spread between 3 lvl80 characters and 2 of them need gear. I am not greedy or a farmer. I just want to gear them up or even make a second set for WvW but with 14 ectos and about 6 rares banked it will be awhile. It was nice to see the prices become reasonable for a little while. Nice while it lasted.
Devs: Trait Challenge Issued
Creative Fix = boost loot drop for long event chain DE’s around the maps, all of them. Spread the people out even more. Really boost up the mid level maps since they are desolate a majority of the time. Synch the dragon timers so they’re all running about the same time, less guesting. Now people are all over the place all the time trying to catch events or start them up doing the long event chains for proper rewards. So many long event chains still reward very little and can be quite challenging.
Knee-Jerk Fix = what we have just gotten
I don’t do the mega boss events unless I happen to be in the map when the boss arrives. I don’t pay to WP or park an alt. In fact I’ve only been to 3 events since the patch. I didn’t do them before because of the horrible lag and now its worse so I didn’t really see a point in doing them. I get the whole ‘overflow’ rage and lag issues. I just don’t think punishing alt’s is the way to go.

I still think Storymode should have been solo-able with low rewards or rng tokens dropping from mobs (0-3 possible).
That way a player gets:
an intro to the particular dungeon, gets to watch the cutscenes, takes away the pressure of running it fast, and gets to learn the mechanics of bosses before taking the leap to explorable mode. And if they put in small amounts of tokens dropped the player will get just enough to want to run explorable mode to get more tokens.
The rewards are low so exploitation is not possible and if you have to leave in the middle because of RL, the dungeon resets but at the same time a party isn’t penalized.
It’s not impossible to find a party for story mode, but it certainly isn’t the mode most groups want to run. There is a lot of pressure to do it fast and skip the story aspect.

While everyone is on the subject of thrashing burn builds… here’s mine. It’s mainly for playing around in PvE. The torch is fun, the sword is great for mobility, and the hammer is my favorite.
But I am worried I have wasted stats on a lot of condition dmg.
I crafted exo carrion gear and put undead runes (they’re cheap) on all of it.
I am curious if there are some skills, stats, or anything else I failed to realize that would make this better.

There are a lot of people quoting this Comic con interview & Italian website interview, so it took a bit of time to find them. I take NO credit for either since I just cut and pasted to give those that wanted sources. Though he never really specifically says ‘toughness’, the fact that they changed the basis for determining aggro for different bosses/creatures means it’s still quite viable. As is the reviving aggro. You are welcome to test that one. Sorry for the wall of text.
Question is being asked at 49:00
Colin answered at 49:22
Colin’s answer in the video was at Comic-Con. He answers a similar question later in Gamescom with this.
“Q: How the AI of enemies will work? Specifically, how enemies will chose their target? Will they be capable of complex behaviour and combat strategies?
A: That’s a great question, because it’s something we don’t necessarely get asked details a lot. There are very few creatures in the game right now that have kind of their final skills and abilities that we intended them to have. For example, in the demo that we’re getting here at Gamescom… the undead army in the high level map is probably the closest thing to what I would consider to be in an army that has a lot work done on it at this point. Our creatures are going to be getting a lot of work between now and release. We have really been focused mostly on the players side of things at this point and on getting all the contet put together on. So creature balance will be kind one of the next things that we tackle, and we’ll be moving army by army in trying to give them themes and skills and AI details to each army specifically. In regards to AI and aggro… simple creatures will use an AI system to determine who attack, and one of the most important criteria will be who is the closest target to them, but there are also criteria like who’s doing damage, how much damage they’ve done… and other things like that. These are basic things that most creatures would use. Then there will be unique AI for a number of different creatures that will use specific skills or the entire creatures will do different things than that. There may be creatures, for example, who attack the furthest away player in the party. There may be creatures who try to focus on people wearing medium armor or light armor, and try to chase them around. There may be creatures that run away, there may be creatures who get out of the way of attacks, there may be creatures who specifically only use skills on people at specifc times. So, all of these are aspect on which we’re going to work as we get closer to the release of the game."

I would love to see one of these dragons swipe at the players and send them flying. Not a one shot, just take falling damage plus a hit. Watching everyone run back to join the fight again would be epically amusing.
The dragons are a bit too stationary and less organic than they should be. They have teeth, claws, tails…let the beasts use them.
The mechanics are there. Warriors have charge and stomp/kick. Just take that and give it a little more umph force when the player gets hit with a dragon’s swipe.
If the player gets hit with a claw or teeth = bleeding stack applied. Let the dragons use their feet for a squashing move that flattens the player with a nice knockdown and some damage applied with the hit.
And +1 to those suggesting using the environment to help out in the fights too.

Sounds like the OP was referring to a disconnect and not an actual crash. A crash would require you to restart the game and relog. Since they didn’t mention it taking that long to get back in, it was more likely a disconnect caused by lag.
I’ve had a few disconnects at dragon events and been lucky enough to get right back in.
EDIT: Then again… I was wrong. Seems they rolled out a patch today to fix server crashes.

Correction, lowest HP gains more aggro than highest HP… allow me to expand on Infernia’s post from wiki:
reviving a player
closest target to them
ranged attacks
top damage dealers
lowest hp
who is using a shield / has more overall armorThese are all factors which affect aggro/threat. You can help pull/peel a boss if you start to revive a player within proximity of the boss.
This is why guardians make better “tanks” than warriors with their naturally lower HP and ability to get high armor. But since there is no taunt mechanic it’s hard to reliably “tank” in GW2.
Thanks for putting the reviving in there. I simply quoted the list but it was stated further down on the wiki page that:
reviving an ally was the number 1 way to grab aggro.

Gaining and Losing Aggro
For a neutral (yellow outlined) NPC the player must attack first to gain its attention. The aggro table of a hostile NPC changes dynamically depending on a number of factors, in order of importance [citation needed] :

2. who is dealing damage
3. top damage dealers
4. who is using a shield / has more toughness and overall armor

It seems to happen the most while playing on my guardian, underwater. Drakes, fish, jellyfish, etc. all will go invulnerable and move away while regenerating. I did start to experiment with attacking them at their spawn point and it can happen even very close to their spawn. My experience has been that it can happen with melee or ranged weapons. I sometimes wonder if it isn’t a guardian’s protective skill/block that triggers them into going invulnerable.
^^This is a bug, unlike the specific mobs spawning and moving towards a DE. I understand those mobs are untouchable until they reach their activation point during the DE.
Other than the guardian underwater the Ranger has only encountered it while shooting at mobs that are on platforms. And that is questionable since they can damage me and I can’t touch them.

@DungeonDaughter – although I agree with you about allowing each character to earn a daily reward; it’s doubtful Anet will allow it.
It would seem that it’s fair that if a player does the daily on each character that they should each be rewarded for the time put in.
Ie. Someone plays 10hrs in two days gets rewarded equally to someone playing 10hrs spread over 10 days. BUT there will always be the Min/Max crowd that would create alts just to give themselves the ability to exploit the laurel rewards. I don’t know what the max amount of alts is but if they allowed this, someone would find out just for the sole purpose of getting max laurels (though it would benefit Anet at 800gems per extra slot).

I found the article about gw2 today. It was posted yesterday March 12th and addressed multiple concerns. One of them was guild missions.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/carolpinchefsky/2013/03/12/has-guild-wars-2-become-too-complicated/
Cool. They respond on Forbes but not on their own forums. That’s just hilarious.
Here’s a possible good midway point for the small guilds being to small to do it vs big guilds being to bored with it. Scale the content to the total number of members within the guild that starts the mission? I know I mentioned most of this previously but hey, here it is again.
So a guild of 5 would have bounties at 5 times their strength, a guild of 500 would have bounties at 500 times their strength (regardless of how many people are currently active). Alternatively just scale the start cost based on the guild size – 5 man = x5 influence cost per run. 500 = x500 influence cost per run. Easy.
Also for the love of god, don’t make bounties be wandering the whole kitten place until they are activated! If killed or time runs out make them despawn/turn invisible.
When activating a bounty check to see no other guilds currently have them active. If no bounties are available then just fricking say so. 15 minutes is not a long wait.
Also who decided that guild things have to be unlocked in order? Stupid call whoever you are. Go eat a flaming cat (flame legion are tasty).
And even if you ignore everything else I post, can ANet please respond here instead of on various other sites that are totally unrelated to GW2? Sure forbes and reddit maybe hip or whatever but you know where people look for GW2 stuff? On your own kitten webpage. Lyssa confound you.
I too find it frustrating and a bit disjointed to have to dig information up from other sites. Please use the forum if nothing more than providing a link in the forums to interviews such as the one on Forbes.
This interview addressed concerns about currency and guild missions. Both of which are pretty hot topics — especially the latter.

I found the article about gw2 today. It was posted yesterday March 12th and addressed multiple concerns. One of them was guild missions.

Quoted the particular section on guild missions:
Tell me about the guild system – Carol Pinchefsky, Forbes Contributor

We really wanted to make a system to encourage guilds to get together and play together. It can really help make a guild tighter knit and just enjoy the game together. And so we built these guild missions that you can go on, and we made a variety of different tiers and systems for them to go through.
Because the game is very large and there are lots of different types of guilds, we were looking at systems to make sure smaller guilds and larger guilds can kind of compete in the same space. It’s obviously a difficult challenge to do, because when there’s a lot more people in a guild, they have a lot more resources, people to organize themselves and those types of things. So we build a couple of systems in there to help us limit that.
We made all the guild content on weekly rewards, and we find that longer lock-out timers like that really help the smaller guilds catch up, because what the bigger guilds can do really, really quickly, the smaller guilds take a bit longer to do. We know there was an initial influence cost that was very high that a lot of smaller guilds weren’t able to get into it, so we’re looking at ways that we can improve that, make smaller guilds more able to compete on the influence gathering area.
But really, our goal for the system is so guilds don’t ever run out of accomplishments and goals they can work at together in order to overcome. So we’re going to add to the system and we’ll make sure we’ll add things for smaller guilds to really be able to compete in this space. But the goal of this system is to be rewards and goals and accomplishments for guilds of all sizes.
