Traits Part 2

Infernia.9847

I have become more of a forum reader than an active player. Part of it is from frustration and part from being entirely too busy in RL.
The traits thread that closed was full of a lot of good constructive feedback. It’s a shame that it was closed and replaced with one of disdain, confusion, frustration, etc.
Honestly Anet should expect no less from those that have been following and hoping all this time. The lack of adequate communication leads to these very issues. It has always seemed to me that Anet has not been stellar at communication. Whether it was announcements via Facebook or other venues while completely ignoring the official forums, to the lack of departmental communication showing itself in areas of the game.
I will always love this game and can see the bright future it could have. Yet at some point, like any floundering relationship, I have to accept it for all its faults or move on. I am not quite ready to give up but I too will be cautiously awaiting news of exactly how things will be changed before I invest any more into the game.

Mixing and mashing a few ideas together here.
It’s a rare drop trinket, the aura is unlocked and can be applied to other equips like a ‘skin’, there is an option to turn it off in the character UI, and there is an option to turn all of them off in the main settings UI, and finally make more of them with different themes.
This would be amazing if it could be implemented. The more customization the better as long as it’s handled well and we can disable if we have a performance hit.

Nebo Terrace event, more of this please!

What most people don’t know is that if that event FAILS, the centaurs will attack the main town. And if THAT event fails, they will take it over completely, and then there are three champs which have to be defeated to regain control. At which point the NPC’s have to defend it again, then launch an assault to take back Nebo Terrace.

Unfortunately, Megaserver completely disrupted these mechanics as the event chain simply never reaches the full failure state.

I would love to see this entire chain at least once.

RNG is a numbers game, right?

Infernia.9847

I have put my $0.02 into this kind of discussion many times in the past. I too have what I would consider to be an unlucky account. I know it’s not actually unlucky or that I’m simply an outlier on the wrong side of the curve. I congratulate many friends, guild mates, and others on their seemingly endless amount of lucky drops or MF flushes. And then I grimace when my thousandth and one flush yields nothing but its standard fare.

By looking at it from the standpoint of an entire entity and the yield produced by every player in the game as that single entity; I’m sure RNG is working exactly as intended.
I think the hardest part for developers is to make it seem as though each and every player “feels” that they can and do get lucky on occasion. I am only aware of one type of coding that allows for this, streak breakers. At this point, I wonder if it would be possible to implement such code into GW2. I’d like to think it would be but I am not expecting any changes.

Some of us are deemed the workers and lady luck shuns us. We scrap for what we need and get the occasional break. Others are deemed the fortunate few and simply wonder what it is they’ll find falling into their lap that day.
Working for what I want has taught me to appreciate it when I get it. I feel the accomplishment and know the time it took to get. Sometimes I’ll buy materials off the TP to finish a few days quicker but mostly I like to get my own mats. It takes longer but feels so much better in the end. (At least that’s what I tell myself)

I try so very hard to be careful to make all my criticisms as constructive as possible. But there are times when I simply have to use my delete key/cancel.

Pointing out the three things I feel so strongly about (traits, story, dumbing-down experiences), the tangible fear I have for a worse “solution” than the problems we have now. the putting into words how valuable time really is…. Thank you.

There is an interview by MMORPG with Colin and Mike that actually clarifies this whole issue. I’ll link the source and then quote the statement.

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/473/feature/9340/page/2

MMORPG: Let’s talk about precursors! My favorite topic! Is it going to be sort of like Luminescent Armor, where you do a bunch of little things and it all comes together?

CJ: I think the Luminescent Armor collections are a really great example of the type of thing we can do in the game now with the collection system. When we originally talked about adding precursors and the ability to work toward them (“A long, long time ago”), it was always with this in mind. We had a plan, we decided to do collections, and felt like collections were just a much better way to do what we wanted to do with precursors than what our original plan was.
The collection system allows you to go on these big, epic journeys that send you all across the game, and Heart of Thorns is going to build on top of it. You’ll use collections that are unlocked by spending mastery points, and those collections will send you all over the world – not just to the jungle, but to the existing game, as well. Think of it like a big, epic quest that you’re on all across the world to complete your collection. You’re touring our entire world and beating all kinds of exciting content as you go through it. When all of that’s completed, the precursor awaits you.

MMORPG: To clarify, it’s one precursor collection… per character? Per account?

CJ: All collections are account-based, so there’s one collection per precursor per account

MMORPG: Oh good, it was sounding like was one precursor, period, per account.

CJ: Yeah, that would be awful. (laughs)

I’m loving how three of my predictions about the Heart of Thorns have come true so far. If, after we defeat Mordy, Jormag and the ‘eternal winter’ comes, I’m opening a soothsayer shop.

I know that feeling. I may join you if I get another hit. Though I wonder if it isn’t just a really good dose of common sense mixed with a dash of a keen sense for common patterns.

Back to what I planned to type. Thank you for the news Colin. It was much needed.
I would like to say that Gaile has done a great job in the community but I wonder if we couldn’t have gotten more feedback in this thread from other members of the Anet team.
An example of such communication would go something like this.

Player.1234 : Acquiring traits has become such a chore now that I am on my second character I really don’t want to do this all over again. What if the trait system was much simpler like using Karma instead of skill points and gold.

AnetPerson: That’s not a bad suggestion and here’s the merits of doing it that way…. But you also need to consider the downside to your suggestion which is……

No promises, no revelations, no problems from just a small amount of back and forth communication. Of course AnetPerson should not reply to all posts or they would possibly go gray then bald in a very short span of time. However giving small tidbits of feedback goes a very long way. It doesn’t have to be a CDI for Anet team members to become involved. This is a huge topic that has affected a large number of players and will continue to do so as they discover the changes.
My hope has been rekindled. I still remain tentative until we have something with substance to chew on.

I would like to see the little donation robots in LA instead of at our festivals/holidays. Then when the community decides they want a section of LA rebuilt they can donate to the particular robot in that location.

When the gold threshold is reached the reconstruction begins and the map is updated. It doesn’t even have to be gold but supplies like a particular type of wood that is in over abundance. Maybe they could even change the supply type when the market is flooded with another material.
I learned my lesson donating to the little thieves in the past but maybe with them located in the city we can control how far they run with the gold this time.

If the trait system is fixed I think I’ll get a char and human/norn. If not then neither as I won’t be leveling an unknown profession without its full traits unlocked for experimentation. Fingers crossed for a well thought out fix.

I will agree with those above me, wholeheartedly. I am not going to make a new character with the current trait system.
I do think there is a hint within the presentation today.

Easy mode fix = account wide unlock

This won’t make me happy but it will make it easier to swallow if this is indeed the route they choose to follow. Maybe it’s just my hope bubbling up or some sort of wishful thinking. I do recall Colin making a comment about making it easier for those with alts to unlock traits. Put that with what they said of the mastery and I pulled out the idea.

Source:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Misconceptions-regarding-Level-gating/page/4#post4396936
The quote:
“Finally, I want to add that a few things (hello traits!) are things that can be improved for players who make multiple alts, we’re aware of this, and though company policy prevents us from discussing what’s in development: I can say we know Gw2 can be an even better game for people who love making alts in the long run, more info: when it’s ready™.”

- I am currently holding on to that tiny gossamer string of hope.

No mention in the livestream about traits… but like I said some pages back, With a new profession and the majority of players being exposed to the trait changes there will be a lot more comments in this thread. I do believe we’ll see changes before the expansion goes live.

I can’t imagine they’ll leave the trait system untouched, knowing that everyone’s going to be rolling the new profession. Then again, they’ll already have the money from the xpac sales, so…

Actually, there is one thing here that is pertinent:

Their mention of the mastery stuff. Basically they described something that could be very trait like BUT they explicitly said it would be account bound and not toon bound so it seems like they listened to some things we said in here, but applied it to something completely new in the game.

I just hope they come back and apply that same thinking to the traits as well since they are obviously able to do it.

I saw this and thought, “What a perfect segue to mentioning a change to traits.”
It just didn’t happen. BUT I was hoping really hard that he would say it.

I will remain tentatively hopeful. I really want to create a new character or two with the new profession. However the moment I think about acquiring the traits on two of them I will simply decline. I’ll work on the mastery of my level 80’s instead.

I am sure they know the majority of players that are unfamiliar with the current trait system, will have a bit of a shock when they experience it. Some will not mind as they only plan to level a single character and have their traits mapped out in advance. Yet, I simply can’t believe there won’t be an outcry because finding the meta build on a new profession will require most of the traits unlocked for experimentation purposes. And that is my hope for this system.

Anet has created an environment in which the players decide prior to trait hunting what their build will be. Minimizing the amount of hunting needed. Sure there will be incidental traits gained during the leveling process, but it’s not the kind of amount that will encourage build experimentation.
In fact I would argue experimentation rarely occurs unless one has a grand-fathered character. I have seen many instances where there are multiple trait builds needed for different parts of the game and even different dungeons.
The old argument for gear is beginning to apply to traits. “There’s no content in the game challenging enough to require traits, they’re not a need but a want”
I really don’t think that’s what Anet was aiming for but that is what this ‘thing’ is evolving into.
Secretly I can’t wait for a new class to be introduced or the next big balance patch. All the tears to come that many of us have already shed. I guess that makes me a bit jaded. I can only hope that the devs in charge of this system have actually tested the system to its fullest before they implement a new change.

EDIT: I forgot to add that what I’ve said here has been said before by others. I keep up with the mega-thread I’ve just forgotten the user names to credit. See you guys in the merge.

If the average is 1k gold to get a precursor from the forge then I am about due one. (If not a little past due) That is good news so I’ll just keep flushing the rares as I get them. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

That 1000g average is achieved across tens of thousands of attempts (i.e. tens of thousands of gold worth of flushes).

Since your sample size is small, the nature of random distribution means that you could be on one of those unlucky streaks where it takes 2000g.

1000g should be considered a ballpark figure. It may cost you (substantially) more or less than that amount, but you should expect it to take at least that much.

I know the odds are slim since I’ve only done over a thousand flushes so far. I am losing no more than potential gold for the sale of the rares I obtain. I didn’t craft them or buy them, they’re all from chests, bags or a rare drop over the course of, well since I started head start. I really couldn’t put a gold amount on those rares since the prices have changed quite a bit since I started the process.
It’s just nice to think that statistically I am due. Whether or not it actually happens is another story.

The big difference between then and now is the that instead of hundreds of flushes it’s been well over a thousand flushes. That forge has eaten so much potential gold that I cringe now when I do it. I’m simply not hopeful at all to ever see a precursor.

There are many great suggestions in this thread. I don’t think I’ll mind any implementation as long as it accomplishs what Anet originally intended with this trait change. Build experimentation for all players not just those with an exorbitant amount of gold, skill points, or patience, time. <- I’ll not explain how mind numbing this system can become on multiple characters.

I posted recently about a new race or class coming to the game, may bring this issue ‘front and center’ for all players vets and new alike. Many players still have not experienced the changed trait system. A new class or race would create a real stir. I can’t help but wonder if they haven’t thought about this and are preemptively taking care of the traits.
Sorry to hype, I’m not normally the type. I couldn’t help myself.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I really liked the analogy of the trait system and a fire being fed & stoked for months. After all this time there will be issues no matter what Anet decides to do. Even a complete reversion to the old system would cause a lot of anger from those that spent a lot of gold and skill points. At this point they will have to take great care to cause the least amount of damage.

Gaile is a great asset to the community. On numerous occasions I’ve followed where she’s taken issues to the devs and at times they have come to post in the thread involved. I would never shoot the messenger unless they shot me first.

The NPE is okay except for a few of the things that were removed for simplicity that I enjoyed doing. However it also brought about a change in the Personal Story that I really didn’t like. I know Anet has said they will fix the story line to be less disjointed; I just hope that they return the lost story arc.

The trait system is the one thing that will keep me from creating a new character. I love alts but that won’t bring me back to the process. Until something is done I will refrain from buying another character slot. And that includes a new race or class being introduced.
I am too much of an experimental builder to create a character with no depth because it cost too much to try something new.

@Moon – I think them bringing a new class or race is the very thing that will bring this whole trait issue to the forefront.
There are multitudes of veterans that haven’t created new characters or alts. There are plenty of new players that think a single build is all they have to trait hunt for and at most a second back up build worth of traits.
However, if Anet introduces a new race or class there will be a lot of players that will be forced to do this trait hunt or buy them. Either way it will introduce a lot more players to the current system.
PS – I agree with your frustrations and have voiced suggestions and opinions and pleas in the past. I have stepped away from posting here except for the occasional one in order to give new people their time in the thread.

Event Scaling and New Dailies

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Infernia.9847

Infernia.9847

Typically I have to agree that the events don’t scale well with really large numbers of players in the same general vicinity. Most of the time there are about 10 mobs for everyone to share and getting a hit on even one can be frustrating. You’re lucky to get a bronze from such events.
But… tonight I got to experience a different kind of event scaling. In Gendarren Fields while defending a settlement from centaurs, the zerg arrived. We went from about 6 players to at least 40 or more.
The centaurs went from Vets to Elites and what was a small wave quadrupled into trampling waves of centaurs plowing through multitudes of players downing them in two hits. The death and destruction was everywhere. Bodies being flung like ragdolls as the trampling continued. Even those trying to help the freshly downed were trampled to death in seconds.
I laughed so hard at the insanity of it all as I attempted to kill something, anything to cull the centaur horde.
Just when a few commanders tried to organize some kind of plan for might stacking, the event failed.
I really wanted that event to last just to see if there was any way it could succeed.

Aside from this one instance I believe scaling needs to be a little more harsh for zergs that will be taking over maps for daily achievements.

A trait system rework.

I won’t even be tempted by a new race or class/profession.
With 9 characters, five of which are level 80, I can barely find the motivation to finish those last four. Some are even ‘grand-fathered’ into the old trait acquisition system and still feel tedious to finish now that they’re in the mid-levels.
I love experimenting with builds and the limitations imposed are new character killers for me.

Using an i7 920. I guess if I want to improve my FPS in this game I got to overclock my CPU. For shame.

The answer is a resounding YES. I’m using an i7 950 and I have currently running at 4GHz (before summer had it running at 4.2GHz, but the gain difference in terms of FPS, between 4 and 4.2 is almost zero).

An i7 920 can reach 4GHz without problems; but do not forget to use a good cooling.

Thanks for this. I have an i7 920 with 58XX crossfire & cooling pad. It’s not overclocked (yet) and the only issues I’ve seen so far is in WvW zerg on zerg, or full World Boss maps. Good to know I’m not the only one with an older i7.

EDIT: Crossfire enabled doesn’t make much difference. With a third party monitoring software running you can see only one card is doing the work. Also edited because I’m an idiot and forgot the gpu model of my cards.

I thought there was no loot from anything in the personal story instances any longer?
If this works it certainly would solve the issue. I have only used the maize balm once to complete the achievement and still have a stack in the bank.
I have refrained from using it because of the issues it causes on both sides.

Traits for newly created characters

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Infernia.9847

Two scenarios that will bring this trait system under serious heavy fire:

  1. Anet introduces a new class or race.
  2. Anet does another re-balance of classes that forces a majority to change builds.

Until then it’s just a thorn in the side that is easily ignored or at the most put on the ‘back burner’ to fix when time permits.

I will maintain my position that the first character to go through the new system may be a somewhat pleasant experience for some. However I too wonder, as Gregori has asked:
Were all traits unlocked to maximize experimentation? How many were bought from frustration(difficulty, bugged content)?
What about that second and third alternate character? Etc.

Ages ago I was working on structuring a set of game forums. The problem we were having was that our topline general discussion kept being flooded with insipid garbage – ‘we want mounts!’, ’don’t nerf anything ever!‘, ’in game marriages!’, and all sorts of other stuff that myself and others really had no desire to read ever again.

So in what I consider a stroke of genius, a ‘suggestions’ forum was created, and all of those posts were moved to that forum – and it worked. The posters that couldn’t stop themselves from posting those things had their venue, and that venue was a padded room that no one had to pay much attention to – it was the equivalent of a public trash bin, and everyone was happy.

They may not treat that forum exactly that way here, but I can’t help but think of suggestions forums that way from here on out – the self selecting trash bin of the forums. Do your part to keep the forums clean – move the trash to suggestions.

We had a Suggestions forum, and your description is exactly what it was. Good or bad that is where all the ‘suggestions’ were moved to.
Now the Suggestions forum is archived. And soon this forum shall join it. I find it sad because I rarely posted here but I lurked constantly. This forum is a great place to learn from and it too will join the archives.

@Bernie – I agree that Mo Mo’s idea is a good one. But at the same time this exact kind of suggestion can be found towards the beginning of the thread and again after there was a dev comment about the size of the thread being so large and hard to pinpoint all the good suggestions. There is even a few posts in here where people had taken the time to write out entire trait lines in a similar fashion. All these good suggestions have been lost in the ever growing numbers of posts. People are cycling and repeating the same kind of ideas because the thread is so massive.

This was one of the reasons why I asked if the devs would simply go through and accomplish the unlocking of all the traits on multiple characters to see for themselves. Doing this would automatically give them an idea of what needs changing and how.
I really don’t think this change was play-tested to its fullest when implemented. The unlocks looked good on paper and a few tested here and there but did anyone really try it out to its fullest?

Aside from fractals, which you already know drops ascended gear, there is always the once per week guild missions. There is a slight chance you can get it through completing certain ones, some missions don’t reward the player only the guild.

Yeah, my friends left too again, after creating new alts.
But sometimes I wonder if it’s me and the trait changes aren’t so bad as I think they are – maybe because all there is is this thread. But although I have all but 3 traits unlocked on one of my characters I just can’t bring myself to do it for another character for which I wanted a new build – she has to stick to her old build – I just can’t.

And that’s the ‘rub’ here. It’s okay-ish for the first character (except for the bugged events or a few that are highly difficult without a group). It’s that 2nd or 3rd character that will not get traits or only get those for a specific build. It becomes a repetitive slog to unlock them all.

The amount of time that has elapsed since they ‘mentioned’ doing something for our alts, is growing as well. At some point, it will almost be too late to make changes without leaving a large part of the player base feeling cheated out of gold and skill points. The longer they wait the larger the number of players they alienate with changes even if it is for the better of the game.

Dungeons : solo mode

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Infernia.9847

I definitely support the idea of the Story Mode dungeon being solo-able, as long as rewards are kept low. Back when there was a Suggestion subforum I asked a similar question. Though I don’t know if attitudes have changed since a year plus has passed, it seemed to appeal to some.

Story Mode dungeons = solo-able

old quote:
“I hope this is not an infinitely discussed topic. If so I apologize in advance.
I have seen many people frustrated with trying to find others to join a story mode dungeon. The rewards are a bit dismal for it to be something others want to do for any other reason than to help out someone.
This should be reward enough but we all know that is not the case.
I wanted to suggest that by making the storymode dungeon solo-able while still providing low rewards, it will provide many players with a much needed introduction to the particular dungeon.
The player can take their time learning the mechanics of the dungeon without the pressure to finish fast or all at one time. Meaning if RL takes them away in the middle they have to start over but no one else is penalized.
I don’t know if this is even possible but thought it was worth a mention.
Explorable mode is all that anyone wants to do for its rewards. And storymode would seem the perfect place to introduce a person to a dungeon’s particular mechanics without all the pressure.
EDIT: Just to be clear I don’t want explorable mode to be solo-able; only story mode.
Feel free to point out all that is wrong with this suggestion.” /end quote

How many of you have 100% map completion?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Infernia.9847

-I do have currently 62 characters but I do have 64 slots.
-At the moment I only have 7 characters who’s level 80. My other characters are mixed between levels of 48 ~ 20 ~ 10.
-I do only have one character with 100% fulled, which is my main.

Woah isn’t 64 the maximum number of characters you can have on one account? Didn’t mean to go off topic but …. that’s a lot of alts. I just can’t imagine keeping up with them all much less their inventory.

@avocado – I had the exact same issue with needing one POI in blue and our server took 4 months to get blue. It will happen eventually just keep checking at reset and grab it. GL

Characters: 9
Lvl 80 Characters: 5
Characters with 100% Map Completion: 1

Been there and done that, once was enough. I love exploring but after doing it once unless a POI, heart, SP, or vista is in my path I don’t actively search them out anymore. Waypoints are a different story.

7 Months later and none of this has changed. Well maybe the percentage of completion has changed but still just 1 character with completion and no more level 80’s or new alts.

I would like a set of Superior Runes Of The Medic.

Ideally, these would provide a standard 25% movement speed increase, faster revival time and no 50% penalty for reviving while in combat.

Could include Medic’s Revenge. Allows a downed player with the full rune set to rally and stay alive if they can complete a revival before the revenge expires.

Standard downed penalties would still apply.

Too O.P.?

Well there is the Superior Rune of Mercy

But it’s nowhere near what you’re talking about.

Do the events downscale in enough time that it matters? I doubt it downscales any faster whether the player stays lying dead or WPs. So that part isn’t the problem. The problem is that, while the event is still [as highly upscaled as it was] either way, living players actually contribute, while dead or absent ones don’t.

That is a question only Gaile can get the answer to.
How often does the game’s code poll/ check to see that player’s are still contributing and either upscale or downscale the event?
I still say the best method is to shorten this time interval during the event. Though that may create new problems with server load, more frequent polling, but maybe not.

I really do think that all of our efforts, including issuing that challenge to the devs, is wasted. I am certain that they have given us our answer, however, they don’t want to come out and say it.

Personally, I would strongly prefer it if they would come out and say it rather than continue to hand out assurances of changes being made for the better in some indeterminate future.

I have put a link to the dev challenge in my signature not for the devs but for the forum dwellers. However, I have my doubts that many forumites look at signatures, much less click on any links.

If nobody stirs the pot in this thread, no other issues are addressed and fixed (like the gem exchange and commander tags), and there isn’t any significant content being released, I believe this thread will fade away within a couple of months. I have been in this fight since the beginning and have watched people fight for change here, only to leave after enough headache, often leaving the game as well.

I am close to being done posting here as well. I am still playing the game but I have to fight to enjoy it knowing what I know about how the company has handled this.

After this thread has died, the traits people will flare up and post when there are content releases, anet fixes other things, and there will be a big flare up next April 15th.

Unfortunately I too agree that the effort of issuing this challenge may be wasted. It’s just that there are 100’s if not 1000’s of excellent suggestions in this thread and there isn’t much left to suggest.
I did mention metrics at the dev’s disposal and still believe that spreadsheets, graphs and numerical data is only half the picture. Nothing beats experiencing the content of the current trait acquisition system for giving those in charge of fixing this a ‘feel’ for what players experience.
What looks good on paper may translate horribly in game. When comparing the numbers of a certain trait that the majority of players have bought instead of acquired they will know exactly why. A trait with an event that’s bugged, takes a long time to acquire, or requires completion of difficult content will become clear. It won’t be the same as a ‘new player’ experience but it will give them an idea of what this system promotes.

I would like to see just one dev post they’ve done this on all 5 characters with every single trait unlocked on them all.
I still have hope. And thanks for the signature idea, I used it myself.

I did say we should find out “Exactly” how event scaling works before asking the devs to change anything. The wiki does not even give an approximate amount of time that the programming code ‘checks’ the conditions for up-scaling or down-scaling.

If the amount of time is high such as say 60 seconds, then maybe the request should be more along the lines of asking the devs for a faster poll/check for conditions so that downed/dead players don’t continue to upscale until the next poll/check.

Personal note: I too am more likely to stop what I’m doing to help a downed player. I also know the pain of fighting in an outnumbered situation with dead and dying at my feet. And then I see it, that beautiful chest of loot pop up from the ground and try to press F. But, the last of my health is done. I die, I run back with all the swiftness I can muster and the chest has vanished beneath the ground from whence it came.
