Do You Play As Much?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Infernia.9847

No I don’t play as much. Mainly because all my guildies left except for 3 of us. Then there is that feeling of way too much time and gold needed to get where I want to be. Or that feeling that it wasn’t supposed to be like this.
I don’t think this game can be compared to a WoW grind. There the grind had purpose with the introduction of harder/more challenging content that required it.

Ascended items have three uses at the moment:

1) FotM – You can’t have too much Agony Resist.

2) WvW – a small advantage over other players – but in the hands of an organized WvW guild with zerg busting intentions – can be quite deadly.

3) Dungeons – faster runs for those that like to minimize time inside.

There is no new ‘harder’ content to apply this advantage in PvE. There will soon be the typical complaints of PvE being faceroll easy since it was balanced with exotics being top stats. The Devs will be stuck at a crossroads as more people get the gear. Should they leave the content as is or add harder content to satisfy the ascended geared crowd while leaving behind the rest.

Real underlying problem of GW2

Anet needs to work on communication, first and foremost.
- Communication between departments, teams, writers, director, everyone internal.
- And then they can work on the sore spot with the community which has been lack of communication with the players. This is via forum communication, posting links to pertinent articles, interviews, and releases in their own forum, etc.
It’s good to see that in this regard their direction is changing and it might be improving. Time will tell.

I watched the same videos you did, probably as much or more than you did. Again, when Anet was making the game, they thought the bulk of people could adapt to just cosmetic rewards. They found out otherwise.

I’m not sure how else I can say it. We don’t have their metrics. But do you really think Anet woke up one day and said, I got it! I’ll make a change that will kitten off our strongest and best fans.

Because I don’t think it went down that way.

No I don’t think it did either. But I do think they could have handled all of it much differently and turned that gear grind mentality into something better.
I believe they had a vision that was lost in a reactionary decision to hold onto a population that may or may not have stayed no matter what they did. And as a company it is a wise decision to study your demographics, especially those that are more likely to be paying customers.
It felt like a knee jerk reaction to a particular subset of players. And of course that’s just my opinion.

Infernia.9847

@Vayne – I just wanted to say that when they first opened up the pre-purchase in April, I think I watched every promotional video I could find. I didn’t watch them once but several times.
At the time I was playing a Korean MMO and GW2 was going to be the one game I could finally get to max stats and just have fun and play. No more gear stat chasing but skin chasing. And I could take my sweet time doing it without ever worrying about being less than optimal. I could make multiple characters and experiment with different builds. It seemed too good to be true.
Those videos built a lot of expectation for a lot of people. Can you blame them for continually bringing the quotes up at this juncture?
We all know that Anet is a company, a business, and needs to make money. But can you honestly say that they haven’t strayed from their vision? And isn’t there a ton of different ways all this could have been handled and still stay true to the premise the original game was built upon?
I could list a bunch of amazing ideas that have been brought up in the forums and sent to suggestions subforum to die. Ideas that would have brought challenge and content while maintaining exotic stats as top tier. Things to give those in need of defined goals what they wanted without a new tier. All the while bringing in more money for Anet as some ideas involved monetization as well.
It’s all mute, I know, but this is like the second slap to the face after the first one landed blindside in November. In the grand scheme it doesn’t really matter because statistics speak no matter how loud or annoying a group may become.

EDIT: I’m always late to the party. Vayne I see where you did say they strayed from their vision. Disregard.

Infernia.9847

@Vayne – For me you hit the nail on the head, so to speak. It is my playstyle that is no longer supported. It is the original vision of the game that I clung to and not what it has become. The direction has changed and to me is convoluted, sometimes confusing, full of chores and check lists, etc. (Like too many authors writing the same book without collaboration)
I log in and the majority of players are doing a handful of things. The very things that I didn’t participate in except on occasion. It is why I was left behind in all this. I was never really a farmer even if I wished I could be.
I think this thread is representative of the portion of the player base that stuck it out after the November announcement. I stayed in hopes that the implementation would be done well. We are two thirds of the way through ascended integration and it is painful to me. I am part of the disenfranchised and I doubt that the introduction of the ascended armor will make it any better. Unlike others you speak of, I do not wish Anet to fail because every industry needs competition to be innovative.
Your example of you v/s your son’s playstyle was spot on. For every diehard horizontal progression loving player there is one or more that want vertical progression.
It’s possible that because of November the largest part of the player base that loved horizontal progression, left. And now Anet needs to cater to the player base that is still playing on a daily basis. Maybe that player base is more concerned with vertical progression than the original. There is no way to know except to watch the direction of the game’s updates and additions.

I love Guild Wars 2. I can’t talk it up enough to all my friends and many of them played it casually. The problem is we have jobs and Guild Wars 2 pre-ascended allowed us to gear up and try new builds and new ways of playing the game in about 2 week’s casual time like you stated. Guild Wars 2 was one of the few games out there that allowed us to feel like we were not falling behind the curve. We could be in BiS gear and enjoy any aspect of this great game without it feeling like a chore. If the optimal meta builds changed it didn’t take a large investment of time or money to adjust to the new status quo.

Then fractals came and with it Ascended gear.
/snip
This is my story.

Sorry for the snip but it was long. I just wanted to say that your story could be my story on every major point you made.
There’s little more for me to say that I haven’t in other threads. I hope to be here as the game matures further and maybe its direction will stray back towards its foundation.

This Game Has Changed

Infernia.9847

I am taking my breather during the SAB content addition. It’s not that I dislike SAB, but the major reason I did it before was for obi shards and not so much total enjoyment of the content. The ascended weapons/crafting to 500 has left me disappointed and disheartened. My guild left en masse over a couple of the issues on the latest patches.
I log in to do the dailies and kind of wander around. I do a scarlet invasion if one pops up. Or I log into a little alt to level and not worry about all the high level gear I won’t be getting for my mains.
I wouldn’t call it burned out yet. I would say it’s just a loss. I’m a little too low on time, a little too low on mats, a little too low on gold, a little too low on guildies.

The game has changed and my playstyle is not really supported any longer. (Multiple main characters, changing builds/gear to refresh the older characters, getting max stat quickly as possible and then work on cosmetics slowly)
I don’t want to give up or give in just yet. I have accepted it and am going forward. It just feels like such a slog compared to the wonder and enjoyment it once was.

Not all, but some of us like to gear our players in the best stats before we relax and begin doing whatever we find ‘fun’. It’s a playstyle not all players have. But when the game came out there was even a quote by Colin that supported that style. Sadly I don’t have a link to the quote but it basically said that by level 80 players should already be in the top stat gear just by playing.
I have done all the events you listed, multiple times, a multiple of multiple actually. And there is no way I have enough mats or gold to get even one ascended weapon yet. I do have 100 obi shards and about 3mil Karma at least. I am glad I got that before the subsequent Karma nerf.
At this point in the game I can’t see a new level 80 getting that best in stat gear even remotely as quickly as was once possible. And a player that has more than one main character?
I am not whining only wishing that Anet can somehow integrate the acquisition of ascended gear a little better with rewards as a character levels.
The others I played with didn’t whine on the forums or come to make suggestions, or give any constructive criticism. Those people simply left. My guild is gone and the four of us left of 30 active players, are now trying to get into another guild we played with on occasion. At least they have room now.

They haven’t had time to come up with Ascended skins that are unique and ‘amazing’. Unlike exotic skins that were worked on years before release, ascended is new. Even legendaries take time to ‘fix’ or put in new ones and they’ve been here since release.
Give ascended time, they’ll have more skins to chose from soon enough.
Also given that crafted exotics are pretty plain, following the same pattern, crafted ascended will probably be the ‘plainest’ of the skins in the future.

Example: Player needs 250 powerful blood to finish up some sort of weapon/gift/backpiece/etc. Normally the player would look up what mobs drop said powerful blood and go farm those bloods. If DR hit then they would move to another type of mob or even another map to get them.
That is not possible (feasibly or in a reasonable time frame) in this game. The most efficient way to obtain the powerful blood is to simply farm the gold to get the mat. It works that way for almost all mats in the game.
Look at the reason behind the problem before suggesting solutions because simply nerfing it isn’t a solution. It will create even more problems in the long run.

Not walk in the park handed to a player but obtainable in multiple ways and not something you grind for weeks to do.
However if you want the aesthetically pleasing, desirable skins, you better plan for an intense grind.

The game has only been out for a year. What if the point of ascended weapons is that if someone plays the game normally, does dungeons the way they want, world events they way they want, does it all on their schedule. Maybe in 2 years they’ll get an ascended “naturally”. For most people on this thread the recurring theme I see is impatience and jealousy. People are jealous other people will get the ascended first, or that they already have the gold “farmed up” to get one. Or they are impatient that they will “never” get an ascended and by never they mean that if they can’t get it in a month it’s BS and a-net is screwing everything up.

At the end of the day, and I have seen the recipe sheets, either you grind and get it fast, or you don’t and get it VERY slowly. But either way, unlike a legendary, there’s at least a set formula to get one vs throwing exotics in the furnace.

Well two years is a bit of a stretch. Personally I’m not jealous at all, nor am I in a rush. I don’t think the ascended is worth it at all. I am seriously considering just raising all the crafting levels to 500 and then waiting for the legendary armor. If I have to play normally and wait that long to get best stat armor and weapons then I’d much rather grind for Legendary everything and be done.

I always admired the great skins from afar but was very happy with my exotic stats. I worked for those exotics quickly so I could then concentrate on the look of each character. At this point it is a reinvestment of time, and a lot of it, to get back to best stats. Once again I don’t care if the crafted ascended looked like torn dirty rags, it’s best stats. Unlike exotics the ascended are behind a time gate and multiply that by the number of weapons you use and the number of characters. Then comes the armor. It’s daunting.

I guess if you waited for the game to come out, pre-purchased in April, listened to the hype and statements, got into the game at Beta and launch, and one year later we are here; it may seem a little disappointing.

Um… every merchant in the game is a vending machine that takes different types of coins/currency. But that is beside the point.
This game was touted as horizontally progressive. Meaning (from what developers have stated) that to get the best stats should be mildly easy. Not walk in the park handed to a player but obtainable in multiple ways and not something you grind for weeks to do.
However if you want the aesthetically pleasing, desirable skins, you better plan for an intense grind.
That was perfectly fine for me and many others. I didn’t need the fancy skins but I darned sure worked to get as many of my characters into exotics as possible to have the stats. Now it is to the point that the time factor is so daunting to gear up multiple characters, I’m not sure I’m up for it. I play 3 mains and each for different reasons. I have 9 total characters for fun. Since launch I’ve changed the builds on those three multiple times and have more than one set of gear (Pve/WvW).
The new gear is not a molehill but Mt. Everest, from my perspective. I’ll start this journey but I am not sure I have the heart to make it.

All the Karma buff food I had for sale on the TP for months were sold in minutes. <— before the removal mind you. Then came the removal of the Karma buffs, then the apology and reimplementation of karma buffs, then the second removal, then the nerf.
It’s a hint and a half that there’s an incoming use for Karma. I feel sorry for new players though. They will never have the chance we did to accumulate it.

There is a thread on Reddit that extrapolated the amount you needed to get from 20% to 300%. It isn’t certain to be correct, but based on what we know so far it will take 4.19 million luck to hit 300%

This is the worst case scenario. If the increase levels off after a while it may take much less.

Nothing for someone with a little bit of gold. They could do it in a day. Though I think playing the game with finger nubs after all that clicking, may not be terribly fun.

For me it will be a long time to see a decent percentage. Not sure I’m up for all that, motivation is waning.

For the first time since I purchased this game (In April before headstart), I am feeling as though the game has gone in a direction I can’t follow. I have been disappointed by it in the past but this time is different.
You can’t blame it all on ascended either. For a game that was touted as horizontal progression based, glorified dress-up & customization, we had a tiny lot to choose from to do so.
People want to look unique. There were so many ideas in suggestions for this very thing. Monetization could have come from gem-store items that people ‘wanted’ to buy. Anet had some winners: convenience items, makeover kits, special skin tickets, quaggan/charr backpacks.
Why not expand this to special pets/seasonal pets for Rangers, weapon dye kits, kits to make items account bound if not completely unbound, functional minis (with small bonus like +5% karma) <—fix mini functionality first like equipping it and it stays out until unequipped or changed. The ideas I’ve read in suggestions are too numerous to mention and all would bring plenty of money to the company without this new tier of gear. There were a tonne of good ideas for gold sinks that would help stabilize the economy as well.
It just comes down to ease of implementation I guess. It’s more cost effective and easier to pull this out of their hat than to bring forth some novel and cash generating ideas.

It’s a great game that I’ll probably come back to from time to time but it has grown into something I’m not willing to put the time into anymore.

I made the mistake of trying to get 100 cheap blue items off the TP. Simple issue of clicking buy, nothing happened so I clicked it a couple more times. Nothing happened so I chose to click to place a custom buy order. I was inside that option screen. The item was 72copper and put in buy 100 items. I clicked buy, nothing happened. I clicked it a few more times and nothing so I left the TP. I looked in my inventory and 6 gold was missing. Between trying to buy the items directly and trying to place a buy order the gold went missing. I re-opened the TP and looked into “Items I am Buying” but it’s empty.

Hopefully no one else runs into this issue. I haven’t bought anything I just removed one of my items off the TP and salvaged it. I also listed a green sentinel pants for 2.99 gold. So the listing fee wouldn’t come close to touching 6gold. Any ideas to check where it may have gone? Is there a log of transactions I can check?

EDIT: This topic can be deleted now… OH the lag has cost me dearly now. /sigh
I checked again and all those items are now waiting to be picked up.

Grind & GW2 - YEP

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Infernia.9847

You should just try a Korean MMO. Then you will realize what is a true mandatory grind.

I came here from a Korean MMO. GW2 was a very nice change of pace. I could finally relax because getting top stat gear took some time but that was the end. Then I could leisurely figure out how I wanted each of my characters to look and work towards that.
Legendary was an afterthought because I really didn’t like any of the looks except the underwater weapons. I could definitely ignore those until the new legendary weapons came. I would save up for them in the meantime. Then ascended happened. I could largely ignore it except for the amulet.
The pace of the gear is nowhere near as hectic or grindy as that other MMO but I am feeling the pressure now.
I left a guild that I had been with for a long time because the pressure was on for top gear, and top effectiveness in WvW. It wasn’t about fun anymore, just winning.

It may not be as bad as other MMO’s but it wasn’t what we all bought into, it’s just what it has become.

After running a performance test at max settings I was able to reach 85% cpu usage and 2010mb of ram which is just below 2gb of ram. A 64bit client would allow the usage of 128gb of ram and of course a 64bit cpu has twice the computing power over a 32bit cpu. Instead of sinking all of your resources in trying to pump out more content maybe you should come out with a 64bit client.

+1
I don’t know how feasible them making a 64bit client is, but I really hope they consider it or are working on it.
What are the limitations of the Unreal engine atm? Without going to do a google search I am a bit clueless on whether or not a 64bit client is possible or whether optimization is a huge endeavor.

Has anyone considered that once the locusts or players that have enough resources to gear up in ascended quickly (time-gated ofc but quick-er than the average player), have done so; that the content will then become even easier.
Then come the threads about how ‘boring’ & ‘faceroll easy’ the PvE content is. We already have those complaint threads with exotic gear but I speculate there will be a lot more as ascended gear becomes more common.
At what point will Anet have to provide content to match full ascended gear? And at that time will the average player have been able to gear themselves?
As much as I don’t like this addition of gear, I still don’t subscribe to this being a treadmill. I wish they would hurry up and get Legendary armor in the game so we can just go ahead and get the grind over with. I personally don’t need artificial or imposed goals to enjoy a game. @Vayne – We can agree to disagree about the ascended gear being ‘planned’ all along but left behind at launch. However the legendary armor has been in the database since launch and you could look it up at any time.
I was always curious whether it would be a part of the game or whether it was an idea scrapped at launch. Recently another player asked this question and Colin came in and answered “not anytime soon”
Source:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Is-legendary-armor-coming-out/first

I really doubt the ascended being planned. There would have been at the very least, a trace of it in the db. And even forgoing this possibility, the fact it is has been a disjointed addition cast more doubt for me. If it was planned then they really have issues with implementation. Think of how exotics work and all the ways to get them via drops, crafting, karma, dungeon tokens, etc.

Implementing ascended items didn’t have to be a dump into the system but it certainly could have gone a lot smoother than it is. To me it feels like they are trying to squeeze it into a tight system and it isn’t fitting properly, it is causing economic havoc, it is causing undue stress on some players, and plain complicating processes and confusing players.

I have played since headstart. I have been critical on the forums but generally supportive. I don’t see the game flowing with its updates and stories being culminated. It reminds me of a book, being written by several authors and none are truly sharing their ideas. So the story and characters just become complicated and convoluted. Just my opinion. Hopefully I’ll be around to see it all come together both lore and community.

The best thing to do when you are downed is hope that someone kills the mobs that downed you – Instant rally. However when you are dead you need a rez.
I have trouble trying to get the downed up while they are covered by powerful mobs but when there is a break or at the end I always rez.
It’s true about the zerg loot mentality. I have been left for dead after trying to rez someone near a powerful mob and then the two of us were left for dead as the zerg moved on. It doesn’t happen often but it does happen.
I am on the fence on the contested waypoint. Dying and wp’ing is never ‘free’, there is always broken armor. However having to run usually means a smarter more strategic playstyle so one doesn’t have to run forever to rejoin the battle.

My 4 Ori rings/earrings of winter would be worthless to me if we lose boon duration on them. I am hoping since they are very close to Giver’s stats that we will have that choice. Still… There is no other trinkets with boon duration and no other ascended version.
All the superior runes, sigils, ascended pieces with MF and no good explanation of what we have to expect.

So umm… what happens to the Winter trinkets? Healing Power/Boon Duration/MF?

Simply double clicking it to turn it into a different set of gear doesn’t replace the boon duration since Winter was the only set that provided it.

Are they just going to match the Giver’s armor maybe? Toughness/HP/Boon?

I’ve asked this very question more than once in the thread. No one knows the answer at this time.
It is important to a few of us who want to retain boon duration since there is no other set that provides it. I too am hoping that they just allow us to use Giver’s stats for the winter trinkets. At least that option is better than losing it altogether.
Especially since there are no ascended options for +boon duration.

There is one more set of trinkets that has MF on it. The Earrings/rings of winter. I use them strictly for healing power/boon duration. I had hoped they would change to Giver armor stats with toughness as the third stat.
Am I to assume that these uncommonly used trinkets will just disappear? As in we have to replace the stats completely with some other crafted stats. Will Giver’s stats be in the mix of those to chose from? If not, will there be a set of craftable trinkets with boon duration on them in the future?
I have yet to find an ascended option for boon duration.

+1 for removing runes and sigils from MF armor/weapons.

To those saying that ‘we’ knew about the MF removal when getting celestial gear; that only applies to people making the new sets. It doesn’t apply to the ascended celestial trinkets that were purchased some time ago. For the sake of balance I really do hope they consider adding either boon duration or condition duration on celestial gear.

I am still confused on how a superior sigil of luck will be compensated for. Or how a set of 5 superior runes of the pirate +1 superior noble rune will be changed.

Then there are a multitude of other pieces of armor, weapons, and trinkets that have MF as a minor stat (snowflake trinkets, etc.) I like my boon duration on the guardian.
What happens to those pieces of gear?

As I understand it, the golden lotus ascended amulet + MF infusion will lose the 10%MF boost on the amulet but retain the 20% MF infusion?

But what of snowflake ori’ trinkets on my guardian for the boon duration. One of the stats are MF. Will that one stat be replaceable or is the whole trinket junked because it has MF in the list?
Celestial is balanced with MF as a part of the stats so if it’s just ‘removed’ the balance is skewed.
And finally what of the sigils of luck and superior runes of the pirate, noble, etc.

Thank you for some clarification. The next question is what will we expect from luck sigils, superior runes (ie. Pirate, noble, etc), and the utility MF infusion? The last of which is sort of a waste because gold & karma infusions aren’t exactly as useful as they once were.
Thanks again for an official answer, it does help with anxiety over the issue.

^^this. It is time for someone in ‘the know’ to tell the community what is about to happen. If they announced the removal is coming, possibly September 3rd, then please let us know.
I only have one character heavily invested in MF (~150% without buff more if my 25stacks on weapon are active). That is with an ascended amulet and the utility MF infusion 30%). I rarely play that character even though it has the MF because I only use it to get T6 mats with guild members when we go to farm those. Doesn’t happen often but when it does I can get about 8-10 T6 in an hour.
I also have two characters with Celestial ascended amulets.
I’m happy for the change to account MF but I am also worried about how Anet is going to implement this.

my human warrior with explorer + another MF exotic chest piece looks really really nice. I don’t think they’ll take away the skins, just the stat. At least I hope not.

Keyboard with Macro

Link to the official stance on Macros:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Policy-3rd-Party-Programs-Multi-Boxing-Macros/first#post1532762

I still think that when Anet advertises a keyboard with macro capability, and endorses the keyboard on the site, it creates a real confusion within the community. (especially for new players that don’t think to check the specific TOS section/official statement on the forums dealing with macro use)

Keyboard with Macro

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I could have sworn that assigning a single action to a keystroke is a/an ‘hotkey’.
And that a keyboard macro was multiple keystrokes assigned to a single key. (simplified)
So if Anet is promoting a keyboard for its game, and advertising the ability of using macros on said keyboard; can’t one infer that it is okay?
I wouldn’t know since I’m using a laptop and Mamba mouse. Not much room for macros with that setup. I was just curious how convoluted the issue is becoming because of advertising like this.

Craft Ascended Weapons: New recipes and materials will be hidden around the world, and a new skill cap of 500 will be introduced for the Weaponsmith, Artificer and Huntsman crafting disciplines. Legendary Weapon Updates: Legendary weapons will receive a stat boost, an Offensive Infusion slot to align with new Ascended weapons and additional functionality, among other things.
Account-Wide Magic Find: Magic Find will be removed as an equipment stat and implemented as an account-wide bonus applied to all of a player’s characters.#

Are you guys as excited as I am?!?!?! "

This makes me excited and terrified all in one. The warrior with 148%MF will lose it all and the gear + ascended & infused MF piece with its 30% will be … ?
I am in favor of account MF and taking it off the gear but no announcement how that will be handled? Crafting to 500 for only 3 professions to start with? I don’t own a Legendary weapon but those with one may be a little curious as to what will or will not happen to their current sigil.
Anyone have a link to a better explanation or is this it for the teaser?

I would like to join my guildies and go to Scarlet’s instance. Unfortunately I don’t see that happening until I can figure out how to get this to advance.

You can do that without Vorpp’s achievements. My guildie did the Playhouse dungeon without doing Vorpp and Closing Ceremony. Just join a party with someone who can open the Playhouse portal

Thank you for this advice. I gave up trying to finish the achievement for now and would just like to see the Playhouse before it is gone.

And as others have requested; Please put in a checklist of sorts to allow us to see which maps have successfully been achieved. It would help all parties especially when trying to figure out why they are/are not advancing.

I guess I can be added to the list; 6/13 total and Vorpp’s achievement is stuck at 4/5. I have successfully completed the event on 10 ‘unique’ maps (complete with Scarlet’s rewards). I did not keep track of which were in overflow and which were on my home server. I have used the same character all but the last two maps I attempted. (simply to see if using them would advance the achievement)

Believe it or not, it used to be a lot worse. I completed Orr mostly solo a very long time ago and because of that I rarely return. At least now the mobs aren’t as dense as they used to be.
A few trips to help clear temples or a farming run with the guild, is about all that will bring me back. GL

General opinion of Portals in Jump Puzzles

I had given up on a particular JP in Southsun after trying over 100 times. I know very sad. My Norn is not the best to take anyway but that one doesn’t have horrible camera angles like most. When the return to southsun put an item at the top of the JP I was positive I would never finish. That’s when a Mesmer offered to port us up and I was so grateful. I didn’t realize there were complete strangers out there willing to help out some of us JP-challenged people without expectation. (I did offer a tip they refused)

I guess if people never even attempted a JP and just took the portal, they’d be missing out. It doesn’t bother me at all nor does it have any impact on my enjoyment of the game.

I still don’t know what “Activity participation” in the dailies is??

Daily activity = found by the crossed flags (red/purple) near the asura gates in Lions Arch. Each day is a different activity (minigame) such as Sanctum sprint or belcher’s bluff, etc.
