We’ve increased the total visible players up to 1000 now, over the course of the next week or two we’ll continue to increase visible player counts and add new search and sorting options as each feature becomes stable.

Changing the page parameter to something out of range, like https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/achievements?page=50, leads to an internal server error, you may want to find a bit more elegant solution.

Race Change

There is currently no Asuran technology that can rewrite the very makeup of a being’s DNA code. The Asura are a very smart people, no doubt. But that doesn’t mean they can use magic to change your molecular soul. And if they did… well then you’re not you, are you?

;P

How exactly does a gender, size or whatever change work then, hormone injections? :p

There should be no race change. This is an RPG, after all. Want to change races? Create a new character. What’s next, profession changes? That would make some sense at least, unlike the other changes. There’s no need for soulbound items if you can simply change your character into everything all the time. The total makeover kit already went too far.

Wow, just wow. The massive number of posts that show responses from people who clearly can’t read is amazing. I’ve seen several responses along the lines of “removing caps makes AoE classes uber powerful.” Seriously? Is everyone high?

Sorry, but I actually stopped reading there. Try leaving something like that out next time you try to come up with an argument. You could as well just have written “you just don’t get it”.

Really wish I could hear the dev’s “vision” for what WvWvW is supposed to be. Do they really want it to be the equivalent of playing a zergling assaulting protoss bases? And are there any ideas for improvements/fixes on the horizon that will make WvWvW not lamesauce?

I don’t know what their actual ideas are, but in one stream they said they want to reduce zerging and make group play more efficient. Removing the AE cap isn’t the way to solve this though, they have to make other actions more rewarding. Their idea of nerfing AE, or let’s say bring it en par with direct damage, in the future surely doesn’t mean they’re gonna remove the cap.

If you’re going to stand under a bunch of flaming meteors don’t you deserve to die?
Taking away the aoe limit reintroduces situational awareness to WvW and may lead to smarter, more competetive WvW.

No, it leads to imbalance. But let’s do the same experiment other games did over and over again, just to realize it doesn’t work out. There has to be some kind of diminishing return. Or we could simply do it right from the beginning instead of introducing just another intermediate solution. I’m still pretty sure they only went with the easy approach of a hard limit because the servers couldn’t take the increased load that comes with DRs. And there’s a lot more to consider than just a few AE damage spells. In its current state, removing the cap would simply be gamebreaking.

Why Exactly are Legendaries Soulbound ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iruwen.3164

Iruwen.3164

A legendary is bound to several achievements, including completion of the personal story. ANet already said they won’t change the fact they’re tradeable, but they shouldn’t have been from the beginning, that was a bad design decision – I agree with that. They should be soulbound the moment they’re created as they show some degree of dedication with a specific character, and only that character should be able to use it. Imo there shouldn’t be a total makeover kit and a name change contract and such things either, but I guess ANet had to make some tradeoffs to satisfy everybody. After all, this is an MMORPG and everybody should stick with the choices he oder she made when the character was created and how it developed while playing.

Uh, don’t know where you got this from, it’s plain wrong. Nvidia and AMD both use 6gbps GDDR5 clocked at 6GHz (at least the GHz edition does), AMD just has a broader interface of 384 bit instead of 256 bit (with Tahiti) which has nothing to with quality whatsoever, it’s a design decision. My GTX 670 is actually running at 7GHz, the memory overclocks quite well. Also, Nvidia doesn’t suck at high resolutions, AMD is just a bit limited in lower resolutions and then shows its true power in high resolutions where the frontend doesn’t limit. Additionally, for many the price is rectified by NV’s enthusiast features like NVAPI (Inspector), AA bits, 3D Vision support and MGPU advantages – if you don’t care about that, get an AMD card, they’re just as fine, my last card was a 5870 and I didn’t really have any problems with it.

Please Explain the Logic of the AoE Limit

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Iruwen.3164

When the zerg spreads it already works out now as AE has full effect on small groups. Simply removing the cap will make AE OP when the zerg doesn’t behave “correctly”, even if it may (and that’s not even sure!) have the positive side effect of enforcing more spread. And even worse, as only some classes have very good AE damage capabilities – namely eles – it would make them uber-OP. And it wouldn’t really solve the underlying problem of zerging, people would just keep a little more distance, this is not what the general goal is. The goal is, and that is also ANet’s official position from what you hear, to make it more rewarding to spread out across the map in smaller groups. So even if there’s not a 50 person zerg but a 20 or 10 person group, AE as it is now without a cap will still be OP. The way WoW solves this now with DR is the correct way, or let’s say a very good one as there may be other good ideas, to do it.

And one must remember that games came out before WoW with AE in it. And even WoW had uncapped AE’s for a long time. Even they decided to cap them.

Unless Pandaria changed the aoe “cap”, WoW never “capped” aoe, they put diminishing returns on the damage when it was affecting 10 or more targets.

It was a hardcap pre 3.3.
http://www.wowwiki.com/Area_damage_caps
Anyway, a DR cap still is a cap. I also think WoW finally found a good solution there. But unfortunately, ANet seems to follow some kind of “we don’t want to do things like WoW, even if they’re good” policy. Also, as I said before, considering they can’t even implement conditions properly and we already have skill lag due to overloaded servers, they probably can’t do that even if they wanted to. They’d also have to implement condition/cc DR which would add additional load.

The inevitable WvW Confusion nerf

in Mesmer

Posted by: Iruwen.3164

Iruwen.3164

Hm, maybe let’s do some basic math. Correct my if I’m wrong somehow and sorry if I sound a bit confused, I drank some whine: at level 80 and ~2000 condition damage, which is with full exo rabid equip, runes of the undead, veggie pizza, tuning crystal, 20 traited in chaos (you probably won’t invest another five in chaotic transference), 30 in illusions and 25 stacks of sigil of corruption (which means you killed 25 players or mobs without dying before!) plus some might stacks maybe, you’re dealing 430 damage per stack of confusion per skill use. Cripple yourself totally and you might be at 2100, which would eqal 445 damage. Yay.
If you’re really lucky, you’ll be able to run into a zerg, spawn three illusions and shatter them with cry of frustration before they die in AE (if you don’t use mirror images right in the zerg, it’s unlikely they’ll survive long enough to be shattered). As a glamour mesmer, you probably don’t have illusionary persona in favor of blinding befuddlement, so that’s 6 stacks of confusion. Let’s say you use one of your fields, feedback maybe, and really manage to apply another five stacks of confusion via confusing images to a few enemies in line, which already becomes unlikely because you’re right in the zerg and it’s a three second channel (anyway, scepter only has a range of 900). That would be 12 stacks of confusion on five players standing real close, which means 5160 _damage per skill use.
WHOA.
Too bad they can just dodge away, which will mean one skill use at best only if they trigger some effect on dodge, and wait a few seconds until that confusion wears off while the mesmer either has half his skills on cooldown or died.
Umm… doesn’t sound that great, actually.
In 1vs1, it’s not really better, there’s a reason they buffed confusing images so you can actually hit another mesmer, ranger, necro or whatever instead of his minions. A single enemy can just take care, the illusionary images animation is pretty obvious (can be coupled nicely with a torch tough if they didn’t nerf that lately).
Under controlled conditions, which means in PvE, I can use all my skills to apply ~16 stacks of confusion to a single target, which means 6880 damage with perfect timing. And then I’m pretty much done, waiting for cooldowns. Ever tried that on a risen brute who’s using like what, one skill per minute and then loses one third of its health? On dragons and so on, it’s not even worth trying. PvP, also “not so great” after the nerf.
Ok, forget PvE. The only way confusion really works is when you sacrifice any other capabilities for it and when the enemy is unaware. Granted, that happens often in zergs, but should be remove everything from the game that hurts brainless buttonsmashers?
Maybe there can be more intelligent ways to make confusion work, like this proposal I can’t really think through now as I’m already quite drunk A simple damage nerf like in PvP wouldn’t work though, as relying on confusion now is useless there when you can simply go for power with illusionary persona and mind wrack like crazy at high damage on half the cooldown.
I always considered confusion not to be meant to kill players, unless they’re unaware (don’t wanna say stupid) – it’s more like a stopping power, prevent people from doing anything at all. It heavily punishes brainless auto attackers and button smashers, which is exactly what it should be like.
In WvW, you’ll probably have like ~5 stacks on you when multiple mesmers use their glamour skills or other classes whatever skills they have because it’s much more efficient to tag multiple enemies than just waste high stacks on few targets. Usually, I don’t have any confusion on me at all or it deals negligible damage, which is quite funny considering I’m running with zergs a lot and confusion is said to be op shrug
Actually, I just went glamour because it’s an easy way to tag for loot. Now that I have all the badges I need for eternity, I’m back to playing a power spec because it’s much more versatile, intuitive, lazy and fun and the same time. No big surprise considering all weapons, even those focusing on conditions, profit way more from power than from condition damage, including shatters.

/e: forum cencors 5160_damage, wtf.

European and American servers aren’t connected in any way, you stated this often enough. There’s absolutely no reason the reset has to take place at two in the morning for most of Europe, this is discouraging and unsocial as most servers are doing reset raids. It was late already, now it is simply too late for most, people won’t wait in LA for such a long time just to play for an hour until they have to go to bed. You said WvW will never be balanced when it comes to night capping, fine for me, servers that have a night shift deserve a lead. But don’t intentionally make it worse than it already is.
DST is stupid and shouldn’t exist in the first place, we can’t change that though and one in the morning already is late, there’s absolutely no reason to blame DST for this problem. It’s totally your fault.

Strictly speaking of the GPU, you’ll be able to drop to, let’s say, “uncomfortable” FPS by enabling supersampling even when the CPU doesn’t limit with any single GPU (I have a GTX 670@1280MHz). With native sampling, I guess I never had any problems unless the CPU was limiting. Which happens often in WvW as well as huge events like dragon fights. With a 4,5GHz and above CPU, you should be able to stay above 20-30FPS in any situation at least.

If “we” killed 20 people in a “raid” and I chose not to loot the bags that were easy mode flown to my feet and instead performed some other tactic i.e) pushing into opposing “raid”, it was my choice to not to take the 1/2 second to loot the bags and continue the push, it’s not like one server has an advantage over the other when looting comes into play, you either take it, or leave it. All are re-attainable if you do not die. If you die, deal with it, no reward for dying, as there shouldn’t be.

Make it a three vs ten, we manage to kill nine before we wipe and shouldn’t be rewarded? Add a few banners or other usable items, you won’t be able to spam F infight to collect loot because it interferes.
Your “arguments” really aren’t working out. Still, there’s no reason to argue against a pure quality of life change that’s not related to combat balancing but only addressing a distraction from actual gameplay.

I didn’t play WoW for a while, but it sounds like this should work out quite well. They’d also have to add a DR system for conditions that can be applied by AEs. That may cause too much load for their servers considering they can’t even calculate condition stacks per player instead of applying an absolute cap of 25.

actually picking up your loot does provide a bit of “realism” to the game. As with any battle, you’ve got to remember to loot the bodies.

Because it’s totally realistic for it to drop in front of me when somebody I hit before dies 1500 units away…

I don’t understand how somebody can actually argue against such a change. It’s not a critical one, it has nothing to do with combat balance or any other important game mechanic, it’s purely a quality of life thing. Looks like the people stating that others have to “l2p” think that the tedious annoyance of picking up loot bags is a sign of advanced player skills. Yeah. Right.

I don’t like picking up that flag when I’m hitting f for the loot during a fight.

Also a good point. Among other things that you can accidentially use. It just distracts from actual gameplay.

Adding more depth to this game is never a bad thing. Adding unlimited AE or forcing 2 rulesets (1 for PvE and 1 for PvP) isn’t a solution.

I beg to differ; GW1 had split rulesets for PVE and PVP so you could have PVE only imba skills while maintaining balance in PVP. Forcing 2 rulesets is a good solution that has been implemented in their previous game.

There are already skills that are different in PvE and PvP. But WvW is considered PvE, and there any AoE changes have the biggest impact.

They’d also have to change the way loot is acquired. Everybody will want to play a class that can tag enemies the easy way, considering you can simply tag a whole zerg then.

What they should do is remove the AoE limit for damage and conditions, but keep it for buffs.

So people finally stop playing any support role at all. Smart move.

Yesterday I figured out hardcore

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iruwen.3164

Iruwen.3164

I think the OP is correct in his assessment of hardcore mode but I would add a few points here.

With my Ex any time I spent gaming at all was considered a waste of time. I would be harangued about any gaming what so ever. That relationship lasted only a few years.

With my current relationship I made kitten sure she understood that gaming time was my equivalent of her watching Dancing with the Stars, her soap operas, The Bachelor and more. I added up all the time she spent with her entertainment and added up all my time game playing for a week. My game playing came out to far less than her entertainment time.

We do have entertainment that we share, Doctor Who, Iron Chef, and a few others and other activities. I make sure I spend that time with her. Any spur of the moment activity is subject to BOTH of our schedules and current activities. She does not expect me to drop everything on a whim and I do not expect that of her.

Same here. Last time we had an argument on that topic, she told me I was playing way more than our “normal” friends. I was a bit annoyed because technically she called me unnormal, so I came up with a quick list of people who are playing way more than me and what exactly they play. She even mentioned my best friend (who’s also a colleague), he’s actually a D3 addict and is sometimes late for work when he played the night before. One guy on her list remained, next time we were over at his and his girlfriend’s place, I asked him what he did last weekend: played PES 2012 on PS3 most of the time.
…priceless. And I didn’t say a word. Just pokerface.
The real problem is when women don’t have any hobbies except being your gf. And often, they don’t accept the fact that gaming is an actual hobby.
“You’re an IT expert, you’re working with your computer all day long, how can you do the same in your free time?”
Uhm, maybe because I like my job and doing things with computers and I don’t work at home (only sometimes)?
Just one thing: when she says you’re getting fat – twink twice before you reply :o

Iruwen.3164

Yesterday I figured out the meaning of hardcore gaming.

In the evening, my fiancée told me she needed a few hours of sauna. I said sure, quit the game and we drove to the sauna.

Hardcore would have been to tell her I had to kill some dragon with some guys on the other side of the evening for 4 more hours.

How many of you would have told your significant others to stay home because of a videogame? This question is at the core of hardcore gaming, and why most GW2 players don’t want things like raids, trinity and the like. Even a Guild Bounty only takes half an hour for a skilled team.

When I’ve been a core gamer in WoW a few years ago (and and addict, and really fat tbh), I had no gf, so that question didn’t arise. Guild leader, raid leader, class mentor, pvp group leader playing for ranks, that was a fulltime job. Usually more than 10 hours per day. Every. Single. Day. 16 hours and more on weekends. My current gf knows that and the only reason she “allowed” me to start playing GW2 was that it’s made for “busy adults”. And that worked out pretty well so far. Played ~400 hours in six months and never stepped back from any real life activities. I can just say “ok I’m out” and I’m not missing anything, unlike in those 40 person raids back them.

What does "casual" mean to you in GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iruwen.3164

Iruwen.3164

Casual = Person that plays the game in the same way they use a TV or a radio. They turn it on to get what they want from it. From my experience casual players are unsocial and care very little about game mechanics.

Hardcore = Person that makes guides; video tutorials; speadsheets with data analysis; vocal on the forums about game mechanics by providing feedback on experiences. Hardcore players are the people that build the foundation of communities. In PVP they’re athletes that people practically worship and watch their videos to learn. In PVE they’re the ones that have the leadership roles since they generally have more experience and knowledge of the game.

Unfortunately, being hardcore often correlates with being an elitist dork. So, while often “casual” is used in a disparaging context, I consider core gamers to be much more unpleasant und unsocial very often. You can clearly see that in the PvP subforums, many people there are just egocentric and selfish. Casuals aren’t “unsocial” just because they don’t care about how things work. They don’t want to spend their little time on “doing the math”, they’re actually playing the game and most of them are very helpful. Just because they don’t consider a video game rocket science like some others, that doesn’t mean they’re not focussed.

Least represented class?

They said the classes are quite balanced not long ago. The gw2census charts confirm that. They’re monitoring class activity just like everything else, if there was a dramatic shift, they’d know there was something so severely broken that it needs a hotfix.

PS: that was not an invitation to start crying how broken your class is. Especially considering some classes are better in different aspects of the game (PvE/WvW/PvP/Dungeons).

In regards to SAB:

I don’t understand why people feel all content has to cater to them. If you don’t like the super adventure box, relax because some people do. It is hardly something forced on you – doing it or not has no real impact on other gameplay.

Arenanet has said that a team of eight was working on it, and a team of three was all that was there most of the time. For those who can’t do math, they have a staff of 300, so three means that for a large portion of time, /literally/ only 1% of the staff was involved.

That was between 3 and 8 devs that could have been working on wvw issues that weren’t out of a total dev team of how many? If 300 is the total staff of ANet, then let’s assume devs make up 20% of that total (not unreasonable, in fact probably way too high), that’s 60 people. Then assume 30 of them work on other games, that leaves 30 working on GW2.

So 10-25% of the GW2 dev team worked on this latest jump puzzle, not the 1% that you try to make it sound like.

For a development company to have less than 50% of employees in development, would be rather contradictory. Such a situation leads directly to bankruptcy. Your 20% is therefore ridiculous.

Furthermore, even if 25% worked on the SAB, but did so in crunch hours while still hitting all regular deadlines, would you mind?

And then they even wrote an article about the music. MUSIC!!1 How dare they? They could have built a new PvP map (nobody’s gonna play) in that time!

Abyss Dye

I don’t see any sense in this thread except Bry telling everybody he got five dyes worth 100g. If it wasn’t rare, it wouldn’t be expensive. I got one from a yellow level ~15 moa, who cares.

No sense in this thread?
You’re entitled to your opinion but I did not make this thread to brag, I am interested to see what the drop rate is.

Yes I have had 5 but only 2 have been from open play unidentified dyes, 1 was from the Mystic Toilet and the other 2 came from buying varying amounts of unidentified’s from the TP so I have not scored for them without spending or gambling.

Considering the complete lack of information on the total number of dyes you or everybody else identified, this is completely useless and doesn’t tell you anything about actual drop rates. You got five abyss dyes out of how many unidentified ones?

Remove stomping from stealth. That’s stupid by design.

sure man!
but wile you are at it also remove the following:
- Mesmer Stealth Stomp
- Elementalist Mistform stomp
- Guardian Stability Stomp
- Necromancer Death Shroud Stomp
- Ranger / Warrior Quickness stomp

thank you!

Being stomped from stealth is specifically annoying when you need to have an enemy targeted to use any downed skill at all, there’s absolutely nothing you can do once you’re downed – but I agree that the system should be reworked in general.

More UI options and customization will push the game into a direction where people don’t actually watch and play the game but the UI. GW2 has a very basic, slim and uncluttered UI, that’s what I like about it. I did a lot of LUA scripting on the WoW UI and customized it to death, it wasn’t really much about playing the game in the end. GW2 doesn’t need that, not even from an eSports perspective. You don’t have to be aware of every single (I)CD, just deal with the fact that they exist and use your brain. If they finally fix the combat log and redesign the way boons/conditions are shown so they don’t constantly move around, that’s perfectly sufficient. Don’t waste time on such an unnecessary niche feature.

Working for a gaming company

I work as support engineer for a very large industrial company, which is completely different from customer support. I do not intend any offense but I don’t like people calling me because their internet doesn’t work and they can’t access their favourite 18+ website. When people call me, it’s about problems that have to be solved yesterday and involve 10 000+ euros per hour.

I don’t think that’s offensive, I’m in a comparable position and if somebody somehow managed to bypass first and second level support I’d of course be willing to help with any minor problems said person had – if he/she paid for it. Shouldn’t happen though because of how the system is designed: customers call first level support, if those guys can’t help, the problem is escalated to second level support. Second level support cannot be called directly, but they may call customers. If they can’t solve the problem, it will be forwarded to us. Third level support, last line of defense, voodoo department, “not your salary level” kind of stuff. Nobody, including second level support, can call us. Greatest job I ever had, most of the time I’m either nerding or doing magic stuff nobody understands and when it gets too boring, we have our own paintball arena in the bunker we’re working from.

PS: and I’m not one of those CyberBunker dorks.

Do it well or don’t do it at all…

War against bots.

/facepalm

There are less visible bots in GW2 than in any other MMO I know where this is relevant. So they’re not only doing the best they can, they’re also doing better than everybody else, although GW2 is still very young. The prices at well known gold selling sites also confirm that.

Well, i am almost 40, played GW1 for 6 years, played GW2 since release almost every day, jumped around in SAB for a few minutes and completely lost interest in GW2.

GW2 turns out to be…not being GW for me anymore.

Its ok thou, I had my moneys worth…

Really? You play a small part of the game you dont like, and immediately you throw the whole game out of the window? I wonder what you would do if your significant other made a small mistake somewhere…

Wanted to say the same. A typical case of ruined forever.

"D3 AH bad for game" What about BLT?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Iruwen.3164

Iruwen.3164

Yes, i know. The famous manipulators. Time to put an end on it.
And avoid them and anything they sell.
Mark prices on stones. Discuss real time with the community any minimal variation of the price and why, about anything, like wow ah do. On this very section.
Dig manipulators. If an alt is used to keep up, will be useless.
Price will be community driven, manipulation will not last.
Simply providing names on the TP clients of buyers and sellers.
Anet must give us names. Or shut down this BLT tool at all.
After all, they are proud to be a realistic market , right? Real market have names.
And scammers don’t last long. We cannot apply laws, we can apply a “community” pricelist. And “kick out” those sharks.
Be part of the game you bough. Put and update price on wiki or any other community website dedicated to it, so it’s clear and written on stone even for a newcomer.

Results? A way better game, more enjoyable, a sane market.

That seems like a lovely little project for you. Why don’t you start by trying to convince the people that own the precursors to sell them at the prices that you find reasonable?

Maybe he should convince the people who currently buy them at these prices not to do so. The items seem to be worth it, so the system’s working.

Monthly pvp laurels

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iruwen.3164

Iruwen.3164

For those of you who dont know, the monthly pvp achivement gives you +10 laurels now and if you are like me, and did the monthly before this patch you will miss out on the laurels for this month. So why is Anet rewarding people who didn’t do their monthly before this patch with the 10 laurels.

Why can’t you just make it so you only get laurels for the upcoming month, just like when the laurels system was introduced! This is really unfair Anet!

Whhhhhhat? Omg.

Why do they continue to fail in so much with these updates. People are being rewarded (greatly) for procrastinating. Brilliant.

Wait, so you’re not complaining that you get less laurels, but that others get more? Wow, this takes egoism to a whole new level. Reminds me of this.

There are already external forums for every server I guess, these may lack an option to block people based on where they play but I doubt that could be done easily in these forums either. And what happens when you transfer for example. The WvW forum is sufficient for general talk, the official forums are not the right place for a complete WvW strategy organization. That already happens on external platforms and there are already too many subforums in here.
