i played my thief, and don’t recall this — she’s human. then i went norn, norn, then back to human female for a guardian.

she fights, and makes these squeak/grunts that sound like … well? i can’t describe it. she sounds like she’s getting pinched, not like she’s actually fighting. when i play my norn female? she sounds like she’s fighting. human female? pinched.

ugh, please, PLEASE fix this!!!

scmfxt, during the bw events, you actually chose to log in as invisible at the point you started the launcher, NOT when you were logged in but still in the character screen. they changed that, for some reason. and if it interferes with guesting; for the person who wishes to be invisible, it can be changed during game via the friends tab. if we want to enjoy the game without being “bugged” at some times, it’d be nice to be able to do it prior to actual log-in again.

it’d also be nice if it worked, again. ;-)

bug reported this in-game, but hope for an explanation, MAYBE, here ;-)

initially, during the bwes, we could log in from the log-in screen as invisible, choosing to play solo with no one knowing we were on. you guys changed that so that we can only set our status to invisible ONCE we’re logged in, which provides a window for hurt feelings, a need to lie or prevaricate if we truly aren’t feeling social … what-have-you. however, today, as i’m in one of my less-social moods, i went this route and made it to the friend window, set myself to invisible, and went about pursuing the objectives i wanted to pursue.

lo and behold! a guildie whispered me! now, when i look on my guild screen, i don’t see myself as logged in; however, he let me know that he could. in the past, invisibility excluded being seen in any list, and it also excluded ability for people to whisper you.

is this a bug? is this something you’re changing, making this option ineffectual?

thanks!

Suggestions for alternative ways to get precursor weapons (legendaries)

anet has said, from the get-go, that the legendary weapons require a lot of work, time, effort and yeah, money, to make.

if you don’t want to pay the 200g for the weapon? ok. make it. do the same work the other person did to make it. will it take ya longer? yes. what’s the rush?

economics 101: the only price that’s too high is the one no one is willing to pay. if someone’s willing to pay it? then it’s not too high. what is it costing them? who knows. it’s a cop-out to say these people are all utilizing cheats/etc to do it — but if they are? so what? you want the sword. you can either pay the asking price, wait for it to come down in price, or get it yourself.

also, your tracking of the price and your estimation that it’ll only continue to raise in price? it’ll continue to raise until people decide the price is too high. historically, the prices on these things do peak, then begin to drop. which brings us back to waiting for it to come down.

the only rush being imposed here is by you.

another thing has been brought up; the map completion, and the need to go into wvw in order to obtain it.

would you like to know how many conversations in /map, and how many posts, i’ve seen with people bragging about camping vistas, and slaughtering those who come to view them?

thanks, anet. again, for someone who doesn’t enjoy pvp to begin with, but is a completionist … i guess i’ll just have to psych myself up to get slaughtered about a million times, ensure i have plenty of gold, in order to obtain these optional achievements, so that i can complete things.

One of the draws of GW1 and a draw here is that you can play in a PvE environment and participate in PvP on the same server. It isn’t an all or none choice.

And honestly, all games shouldn’t be the same game. So what if other games have PvE servers and PvP servers…..it doesn’t mean they all have to.

to me, the last statement absolutely sums it up best. not all games are, or should be, all things for all people. past games that have attempted to do that have to a large measure hamstrung themselves. imo, we’re seeing a division in the genre, bringing elements to a game that people do want, then working to fully implement and develop those elements. anet has steadfastly stood behind their intent, and a part of that intent with this game was building cohesiveness and cooperation within worlds, not competition.

i’m saying this with all respect, please understand it: as wow is no longer my game, and rift is no longer my game, and tsw failed to grab me … perhaps gw2 isn’t your game because it doesn’t have these elements you seek. i don’t believe that’s a fault, or a lack, on the part of gw2; i do believe it is that this game appeals to players like me who seek cooperative play as opposed to competitive play. this isn’t a failing, it isn’t a lack, it’s just a different approach that actually does appeal to a great mass of players.

You should just read the dev blogs and all the pre-release announcements. Also GW2 has a large pve part it’s meant to be a pvp game. Yes, there is this big world and the greart personal story, but if you take a closer look at the skills and the games core mechanics you soon realize that they are primarily made for pvp (just as it was in GW1).

World PvP is part of the monthly achievement, and it should stay that way.

you’re not answering the question; i’ve read them, and apparently i didn’t read what you read, because your interpretation of the dev blogs is that it’s a pvp game; my interpretation is that it’s a game designed to be enjoyable for more than just the pvp gods out there. but i tell ya what; let’s forget the original request. you’re right; disparity obviously doesn’t exist in forcing non-pvpers to pvp, but not forcing pvpers to do non-pvp content in order to obtain the same achievement. so i withdraw my support for that, and instead change it:

anet? how about you throw in some dungeon achievements for the monthly completion? make it comparable, but ensure that everyone has to do both pvp content AND pve content, which may or may not be loathed by this side or that side, in order to complete the SAME achievement. let’s not hold those pvpers hands, since we can’t hold non-pvpers hands! let’s make sure everything’s equitable: force non-pveers to engage the world on the same level we do, as you force us to engage the world on the same level they do.

how’s THAT for parity?

I don’t get where that idea comes from. To say that GW2 is a PvP game and limit it to that is silly. There is SO much you can do in this game and NEVER set foot in PvP. There is more world, more content in the PvE in this game than there is in PvP.

ok, do me a favor. link me where anet said “Guild Wars 2 is a PvP game.” please. i’m really tired of hearing this argument; you obviously pvp, therefore, to you, it’s a pvp game. but the scope, as presented by anet, was to create a game that was fun to play for everyone. if they’d wanted it to be a pvp game, excluding pve, then i bet they wouldn’t have spent NEARLY so much time on also developing the world, the pve content, and so on.

enjoy your pvp, by ALL means! that’s what you have fun with! i have fun with the pve, and with rp. don’t discount me, i’m a paying customer, just like you.

what’s being asked for isn’t ridiculous. making non-pvpers HAVE to compete in pvp for completions would be akin to making pvpers HAVE to do dungeons for the completion. if you hate the dungeon, if you have absolutely no interest in it, you’re gonna be frustrated, angry, you name it.

not asking for favors, favoritism, anything — just sayin’. balance it please. (dear gods, i can’t believe i used the “b” word!)

now, this especially becomes a big deal with mail — if i have said, “this person offends me,” then most likely i do NOT wish to hear from this person again. can you PLEASE institute something that will auto-block those whom we report? again, it’s especially difficult with mail to block people, due to the way the name has to be entered, and the fact that sometimes the mail glitches … etc ad nauseam.

thanks!!

1) anet has said, loudly and CONSTANTLY, that there are multiple methods whereby accounts are being hacked. newly hacked accounts, and botted accounts, are NOT all owned by folk who’ve purchased gold from gold sellers.
2) anet has said, loudly and quite repeatedly, that they are enacting new security measures but it requires activity on the gamers’ parts. for instance, other games have had their information stolen, including account email/names and passwords, and hackers are systematically attempting to use these stolen email/names and passwords to get into gw2 accounts. much of the time, they’re lucky because silly players don’t pay attention to what anet posts, and don’t follow the instructions — like, set up a different email solely for this game. change your password. you know, SIMPLE things that can make your account safer.
3) i submit that after rift enacted coin-locking on accounts, gold sellers became nearly non-existent. i see anet’s attempt to do the email authentication as much the same thing; if you log in from a different isp, you’ll need to confirm this is your account via email. well and good … but if gamers use the same password for their game and their email? not so good. think about this, players, and act accordingly.
4) as has been pointed out, anet is researching the best method to handle this. sure, we get frustrated. but then, we also go frustrated, waiting seven years for this game to launch … and in the end, we had to admit that anet knew what they were doing. so let’s let them handle it, guys; they know their code. we don’t.
5) anet, this is to you. i need to point out that any of your armor/weapon crafting is HUGELY mats-intensive, and you’ve decreased our ability to farm them. honestly, i’m frustrated that i HAVE to farm them, just to be able to keep my characters’ toons in their own crafted gear from level to level … but the mats-intensive nature of leveling does require farming. now, due to botting, you’ve decreased the drop rate after a period of time? can we have another solution, please? farming is not something i enjoy doing; i want to play my game. not have to spend an hour, or two, seeking places to farm mats to level crafting. i left this in this topic because the decrease was a response to botting.

overall? thank you so much, guys, for everything you’ve done, given us, blah blah blah. i, for one, have faith in you.

Not happy with sylvari story

in Personal Story

Posted by: Isende.2607

Isende.2607

I am playing a sylvari Necromancer minion master with a Staff. I get to the story mission where I have to fight the Lich while the centaurs fight the undead. I don’t know who designed this but clearly they thought that only Gaurdians or Warriors were going to do this quest. It forces you to use a sword that doesn’t even have good attacks or powers. As a Necromancer who uses his minions to take the brunt of the damage this means that I am now completely out of my element. I have tried all the different options of utility spells but since they are all minion spells and I’m being gang banged by six different undead brutes plus the lich without my staff to support the minions that means I am kitten. I tried using other unlocks I have but nothing works and now all my armor is broken and I have to restart it. I can’t get past this quest as it currently is, this ladies and gentlemen is a badly designed quest.

Hello IronHide,

Can you please give some more specifics as to which step this is or the level? What Order did you select? Off the top of my head, I think you may be fighting Mazdak, does that sound correct?

We can have someone check into that once we know a little bit more.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this feedback.

~Sarah

thanks for listing the name of the boss, THIS is the one i posted elsewhere about!!! i ended up having to get aid for it. basically, you’re able to get mazdak down to around 25-30ish%, and he calls in backup. the backup swarm you, and as a clothie? there’s just not much to swarm! you’re doing your best to run around a very small area and not be hit … i tried the kb/kd features on the sword, but they weren’t effective beyond melee range, and in melee range, it doesn’t take many hits from three or more mobs before i’m on my back trying to rally. i tried the lightning, but it just didn’t do enough damage to keep them off of me. tried the whirling bit, but cd on it? pft.

i think tuning mobs that swarm you, ESPECIALLY after they’ve eaten all your allies’ faces and you’re standing there alone, in cloth, needs to be looked at. and i’ll cover all the caveats — i don’t want a zergfest, i utilize dodge as often and cannily as possible, i had all my utility spells rotating out trying to find the best fit. still ended up naked twice before i called in reinforcements in disgust.

edit also need to comment, on this character i’m attempting to do all her story quests AT level, which means she was level 28, no elite spells. yes, it’s a personal thing, i didn’t follow that with my other two. but that’s the goal. if a quest is designed for level 28, then it should be doable by a level 28.

apparently, reading above, there are people who are just much smarter than i am in kiting, etc. ;-)

Difficulty vs. level while doing our personal stories

in Personal Story

Posted by: Isende.2607

Isende.2607

i just completed my level 28 sylvari/whisperer’s personal story. sadly, i can’t remember the name of the story/quest, nor the boss’s name, but it’s a lich boss. here’s the scenario: i’m a mesmer, who suddenly has to fight with this magical uber sword with a completely different skill set which does NOT utilize any of the abilities i, as a mesmer, utilize. ok. we can handle this, right? fight through five mobs … done. little battered, but lived. then, the lich spawns, and i have to go fight crowds of mobs (2-3 at a time) to get to him. again, done. no big. then we make it to the lich … and we, my allies and i, are fighting him, get him around 25ish%, and he calls in a group of … oh, i don’t know, 10? mobs. who eat my allies. however, all the mobs are dead, so i go toe-to-toe with the lich again, and he calls ANOTHER wave that eats my face in about two seconds flat.

now. there is no learning curve, here. i’m one of the biggest proponents you’ll find for having to learn a new way to play. i’m more delighted than i can say that this game is not a zergfest. but i will also state categorically that i do not believe all the personal story quests are tuned to the player’s level and ability, even max ability, for a solo story.

i’m lucky; i play with my fiancee, and am part of a guild who’s helped each other for years. so i called in two ranger pals, they aoe’d the mobs down, we made it through the fight. but for what it’s worth, i broke my armor to nakedness TWICE, repaired it from this state TWICE, solo, before i called them in. i tried multiple combinations of skill/spells i had available for 6/7/8/9 keys.

i don’t know what to tell you, anet. some of these, especially for casters in cloth, just have overwhelming numbers of mobs that eat your allies in an instant, then eat you even faster. it’s frustrating. i do NOT want this zerged, at all. but i want to be able to do it solo, if i choose to.

incidentally, as we were zoning back out from the fight, there was someone in /map, a thief, apparently having the same issues i was.

edit forgot to mention; when i died the times i died, WITH my allies all also dead — by the time i ran back to where the boss was? he’d completely reset. i had to get him back down to the point he spawned his mob of mobs, while trying to rez my players (utilizing phantoms and clones for battle), just in time for them to get eaten by the waves of mobs. not fun a’tall.

oh, i’ve noticed this as well. what was interesting to me was running the assault on the dome of svanir on both my guardian and my elementalist. nothing above silver, on either of them, and i couldn’t heal/support on the ele without getting only a bronze. so if my playstyle includes supporting or helping, i feel like i’m being penalized. on my guardian, i was MORE often able to get silver on that event, and gold on the rest, even tossing out some support, but i think that’s because the guardian’s support style ALSO has lots of damage included in it, where the ele’s water attunement just … doesn’t. food for thought, this probably SHOULD be looked at. if we’re contributing, whether in support, or rezzing folk, or doing damage, our participation should be reckoned with that in mind.

additionally? keep in mind that on my ranger, i almost consistently get gold, no matter what, except in the svanir event. that one for her has been consistently silver. oh, and also? flat ground, nothing in front of my ranger but her bear’s wide butt, and she’s getting obstructions? guys? what’s up with that?

No True Dedicated Healing Class?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Isende.2607

Isende.2607

op, i think you’re missing a lot, and probably didn’t really research the game before you purchased it, which is kinda sad. but here’s my $.02 worth.

i’ve played mainly heals, secondarily tank, for most of my mmo career. as a healer, i’m not involved in the fight, i just stand back and watch health bars. as a tank, i’m more aware of the fight, because i have to be, and i just stand there, throw +threat hits, and keep the baddies focused on me.

gw2 changed that, and have said from way-back-when that they were eliminating the holy trinity. they wanted to do a couple of things: 1) make people responsible for their OWN survival, their OWN take-downs, their OWN everything; 2) enable everyone to be an active participant in all the fights 3) stop the reliance on a tank to hold threat, or a healer to heal.

they’ve succeeded, and then some.

at the beginning, i was hesitant about playing a game where i couldn’t be a dedicated healer, or tank. then, i discovered the guardian, and the elementalist. and the ranger. and so on and so on. i delight now in the fact that >>i<< must remain aware of the fights. i must be aware of the aoe on the ground. i must be aware of the mobs that toss the aoe, and strive to beat them. my team, my group, my whatever, EACH has their own role to play, but it isn’t tank/heals/dps. it’s what they do best. four of my guildies and i went into ac for the first time the other day; two thieves, an ele, an eng, and a ranger. we really didn’t die a lot, considering it was our first time in. we found out that the eng could be a spot tank, for a brief period; my thief had scorpion wire, so i could pull mobs to me; the ranger and ele both had aoe healing effect spells … through the run, we learned how to function together, and well.

granted, we’ve gamed together for a long time. further? we were in teamspeak, so we could chatter back and forth. yet further? we weren’t afraid to try different things, when something didn’t work.

if you bought this game thinking it was a re-work of what’s been done, then you didn’t do your research. you ask, why should you wear heavy armor? ever play rift? they have rogue tanks there — medium armor, based on lots of dodge and evasion. everything DOESN’T have to be the same as what came before to be enjoyable, and if you want to successfully do a dungeon, i recommend first learning everything you can about your classes’ abilities in THIS game and second, getting a good, cohesive group together to do it with.

you’ll die. that’s a truth. but i bet when you L2PYC, you’ll die less. when you undo the rigid mindset that past mmos have created for you, you’ll die less. when you embrace what IS rather than what you think should be, your enjoyment will go up.

in the end, it’s on you. i hope you come to love the changes in this game as much as i have. i hope you’ll realize that some of us healers really enjoy being a part of the action, and still able to toss out a heal or two here or there (my ele, for instance! and my ranger!). but if you don’t, then this may not be the game for you. those of us who love it love it PRECISELY because of how anet has set it apart from everything that came before.

i wish you luck.

Fun, pure unspoiled gaming fun

I would play just to mess with the dungeons but I hear they are so hard it isn’t even fun. I’m holding judgment on that since I haven’t been in one myself yet.

And they should be kept like that, hard, even harder just on the edge being impassable for anyone lacking the skill to do it.

actually grebber, the dungeons hearken back to a way of doing things before everything became a numbers game. once upon a time, we had to work together as teams. heck, i remember when dps used to protect the healers! nowadays, in your generic mmorpg, dps says “if i wanted to protect the healer i’d have a sword and board.” or somesuch nonsense.

the dungeons are hard, but not ridiculously so. if you have a good group of people, you’ll only die a couple/few times per boss, until you learn all the mechanics, and the myraid ways around the mechanics. consider them more “challenging” than hard. and a lot of us “old” players? we grin at the challenge! we strike our shields, bare our teeth, and scream out bring it, baby!

Its not for a sense of “achievement” its because this is an RPG and stats mean EVERYTHING IN RPGS. An RPG with “meaningless” stats is not an RPG.

coughcough RPg = ROLEPLAYING game. what part of roleplaying is stat-centric? just curious. perhaps you meant mmo? i’m not sure.

i think the point anet, and gw2, have made is that progression is NOT a requirement to keep people playing. but that’s a test that time will prove or not, ya know?

but think about this. the treadmill mode? it’s there to keep YOU paying your money to this massive enterprise that’s made to … make money.

big difference between a developer who wants to make money, and one who wants people to love the game. it does make the game different — something many of us are quite enjoying.

What keeps you playing?

Isende.2607

hiya grebber. here’s why i have been foaming at the mouth to play, and why i’ll continue playing:

raiding is boring. the treadmill to grind the gear to raid to grind the gear to go to harder raids to grind the gear … you get the picture. i remember the magic of my first mmo, wow, when i first began playing. back then, i had my kids in their late teens, and i figured it was ok for me to fall into a game, not having to worry about the constant attention required to care for them.

i started playing wow just before bc launched. the first time i took the boat from darnassas to dark shore? it was then i started to see, and realize, the scope and size of the world that had been created. everything was new, it was magic … it was just waiting for me to explore!

i took weeks just to get to level 20. lol, between constantly rerolling to figure out what i liked, then running around, exploring, socializing, etc etc etc … then, the guild invite came, and i joined a guild, and discovered even more the magic of socializing with a great group of people.

after that, i became a guild leader for noobs, essentially. gave them 10g, gave them bags, helped them learn the world. it was still fun, still exciting, and people played for the love of game, not for raiding.

then came gearchecking. and hardcore raiding with min-maxers. and the nerfing of all the magic obstacles i’d had to fight so hard to overcome, throughout the world (brumeran, anyone?). and the redo of the talent trees, so that hybridization was out. and so on and so on. after cata, i just couldn’t stand it anymore, and i went to rift. rift did a whole lot right, but at the end, it was still a gear grind. then sw:tor came out, and their endgame was non-existent, AND their worlds were pretty … ooky. so. here i am, with a dreamer’s soul, stuck with games that promise me the opportunity to do dailies, every single day, so i can earn rep so i can earn gear so i can continue grinding gear …

and along comes anet, and gw2. it’s a world filled with magic, new discoveries. i feel like i’m playing in a work of art, from the visuals on down the line. i see no need for the treadmill; i can play my characters to 80, then roll another one. i can explore the different races, the different professions, and even within that, i can explore all the variations on personal stories. i can spend all my time exploring, looking in nooks and crannies, finding the bed at the top of the windmill with the kitty lolling on it.

i can take part in the dynamic events, if i want, and kill! kill! kill! i can sit in the cities, and socialize with folk (though i do wish there were some cross-city chat for different levels). i can hang with my friends, when they’re lower than me, and build xp. they can hang with me, when i’m lower than they are.

people seem to forget that RP is a huge part of mmoRPg. roleplaying involves immersion, and it’s how this whole genre came about. i’m not a hardcore rper, but i LOVE a world that i can lose myself in the story, the magic, the scenery, the exploration of everything.

so. i play gw2. i will play gw2 until i’ve absolutely exhausted my love of exploring everything, until my friends are no longer here, and the new friends i’ve made are no longer here. i’ll play until there is absolutely nothing new to learn about the professions, the races, the factions. i’ll play until i’ve rediscovered my once-upon-a-time love of pvp, and re-exhausted that.

in other words, i play gw2. that’s all. and that’s enough.

hope this helps!

must say i’ve experienced all of this, and it’s especially hard on some of the vistas/jumping puzzles when you’re a norn. additionally, my camera got stuck inside bolt launchers today when i was destroying them; i’ve had that happen repeatedly on items i’m destroying for heart quests, or just to stay alive. i have to move my mouse all over the place, jump, and use movement keys to try and get it unstuck, because of the way it zooms.

further, i’ll reiterate what folk have said: you have created a MAGNIFICENT world. inside caves, often, we can look up and see openings, with water pouring down, or the sky shining through. however, the physical manipulation required to view these things is … fun? that’s one word for it.

last, but not least — i DO have issues with the fov. i’ve dealt with similar issues for years, but i know that gw1 did NOT have the same level of these issues. also, not being able to zoom in to first-person for purposes of taking screenshots (i want my friends to join me, so i snap pics of as much of this world as i can!) is really problematic.
