here’s my two-cents-worth — when i’m leveling a new character (which i do frequently, as i have severe altitis), i WILL not run with a guildie who’s more than five levels above me. their abilities to completely pwn make me feel completely useless; i feel like i’m riding their coattails.

tldr? imo, level scaling needs to be INCREASED so that total pwnage does NOT happen. but that’s just me, and i accept that.

i have to say, i’m a bit confused on some of your points. first of all, you make several that i feel are VERY valid — charr female tails, among them. sylvari “hair” — omG please give us more! and norn and human hair — i despise that the only “long” styles don’t move properly or, in the case of the norn, is covered by a headpiece on the one long style that’s truly gorgeous. anyway.

but when you speak of the norn, and the human, faces as all being “supermodel” types, that i can’t understand. first of all, it is more than possible to build a body type that’s just “fat” or “dumpy” or whathaveyou. then, add in that some of the faces on both races have scarring, some are “older,” and some are just plain out, what i would consider UGLY and beyond ability to make pretty, and i’d say there’s a big bit of variation available.

for a new game, yes, there are things i’d love to see different, but if you’re going to include the “supermodel” argument, it needs to be valid. given the faces you’re able to make, i don’t think it is.

lol, elite — you didn’t play rift, did you? our costume options there were phenomenal; we had outfits we could equip at choice that appeared to be this game’s equivalent of “town clothes,” and we took extreme delight in mixing, matching, colorizing, and wholly personalizing our “look.”

the pvp thing was addressed, in rift, when rift disabled the ability to wear personalized armor in pvp. the community reacted with extreme outrage, as our weapons were NOT changed. the general consensus was, this makes it MORE challenging, and if i can’t tell that polearm-wielding guy running at me is a warrior, that’s MY problem, not everyone else’s.

the ability exists, and is utilized, and folk are quite happy with it, in other games. i do hope gw2/anet give us more options on customizing our appearance — thus enabling better character immersion for myself, and many like me.

Crafting: Back Items and Aquabreathers

this is an annoyance, as well. most of the back items we get come, initially, from story quests, which SOME get around … level 30? some, not til later. THEN, you add in that these back items can ONLY be slotted or upgraded with “low” or “fine” items, and that’s just annoying. ok, i get it, you wanted to make back items something “special.” something to be worked toward. yeesh, guys — hello? at the very LEAST give us all a way to get the same options at the same level!

as for aquabreathers? this is a HUGE deal. the ONLY upgrades you can get on these are from karma vendors, they are NOT available every five levels (yes, i’m neurotic, i upgrade my gear every five), and you can NOT salvage them, you can NOT sell them … so once you FINALLY are able to upgrade them? they’re wasted pixels.

wholly agree.

i would LOVE to see the friend/guild notification separated. at the VERY least, we NEED guild member notification, IN guild chat, not in some secondary chat or collection of messages. but for friend messages? no reason that can’t be toggled on/off to show up in main, AT THE VERY LEAST.

you know, back during the betas, i realized i had to basically relearn how to play games. ya see, first of all? i didn’t use a mouse. up to that point, i could run as a healer, tank, or dps from the keyboard, and quite successfully. that CERTAINLY changed when i started playing gw2. then? dodge, huh? i had to train myself to learn to dodge, because without dodge, no MATTER how well geared you are, you’re gonna get your butt chewed on a good bit.

then came strafing. naturally, never having used a mouse, i never really strafed. further, at least when healing, and most dps, i COULDN’T move much — tanking was the only time i could and SHOULD move a bit while playing. but gw2 rewrote that, too, so i could do nearly everything while moving. meant that the baddies were probably built so i HAD to move.

the days of standing in one place, toe-to-toeing against bad guys, is largely over, at least in gw2. you must learn to be mobile, you must learn to ration your self-heal, you must learn many many new things. i’m betting, though, you’re a step up on me — you probably already know how to use a mouse, right?

don’t get frustrated, don’t give up, but do commit yourself to relearning things. using dodge. using your “burst” skills (F1, F2, and so on). strafing/moving while casting.

as for earning a gold? that DOES get easier, over time. it comes with experience, like any other game. now, without working at it, i can earn a gold in an evening’s play — that’s NOT working at it. if i work at it, craft things to sell, sell specific crafting mats that i know are in low supply, etc etc etc it’s not unreasonable for me to net 5-8 gold in an evening. learn the trading post, learn the difference between your sale price and the profit. learn the difference between the “highest buyer” and “lowest seller,” learn when to post within each. learn what mats make “mighty” gear, since those are the mats, at least in the first 40 levels, that will sell higher.

good luck to you, this game IS fun, it IS enjoyable, but it IS a new element, chock full of new things to learn.

you know, i built a thief spec for myself, completely void of any stealth attributes. rather, i found lots of self-heals, as well as pretty dang good damage. this spec relies on dodge and steal to restore endurance and initiative, so it was a bit tricksy for me to get used to dodging lots … however. for pve it’s about the most survivable character i have, next to my warrior.

wandered into wvw one day, looking for map completion, and got trounced by a guardian with a gs and don’t remember what the other weapon set was. i did notice that our fight lasted about six-seven minutes, and i had more hp than the guardian, when their buddy the ele joined the party.

thief, when built to suit your playstyle, and with certain considerations taken into account, can be a BLOODY survivable and high-damage profession. take the time, play around on guildhead, and you’ll see for yourself.

Rey is right. There are no big goals to achieve at 80. Played 2 months, reached lvl 80, done 100% map, and that was it. I know GuildWars wants to keep older players in GW1 and the new players or kids who wants to play Guild Wars to buy GW2. I was expecting something extraordinary from GW2 but it’s lame. I remember when i played first time GW1 there was like no other mmorp, was a real experience and a nice skill combined game + dungeons. Allot more fun, more difficult, allot more things to do after you did lvl 20.

did you guys not do your research, before you purchased the game?

the devs said, at the beginning, “this is not about getting to 80 THEN starting endgame. we want the WHOLE game to be endgame.”

so. you got a toon to 80, and now you twiddle your thumbs, wondering what to do? if you want vertical progression, this isn’t that game. it was never intended to be — it was intended to be a “the journey is the destination” type of game.

Damage Meter

in Suggestions

Posted by: Isende.2607

Isende.2607

I would absolutly love to have damage meters. It is a great tool to measure yourself against others or just against yourself. Now you don’t really have a way of knowing if the slight changes that you’ve done on your build helping or hindering you. You’ve got no way of knowing if those same mobs are dying faster on your shatter mesmer or on your double axe/greatsword warrior. It all depends on “feeling” if something is working better or not.
Accountability is never a bad thing. And the same people that are rude/obnoxious in a dungeon if you are low on dps are the same people that now are rude/obnoxious for some other reason.
Guild Wars I didn’t have damage meters, but mesmers still had trouble finding a PvE group, because they were perceived not to bring as much to a party. If that perception was based on fact I do not know, but if we had damage meters then we could either prove the assumptions wrong or lobby the developers for a buff for the class with hard numbers to back it up.
I can see why the developers wouldn’t want damage meters ingame, as i’m pretty sure if there were thousands of posts on the forums with screenshots of recount for a couple classes, something would have to be done about it.

for those of you who never gamed BEFORE damage meters were out? you measure your success the same way we used to:

1) is your group killing the bad guy?
2) is your group living?

if these two things are answered yes? you’re doing it right. that’s all that matters.

Damage Meter

Isende.2607

GW is not a DPS game, if you want a DPS meter either find a way to make your own or play a different game.

ANet took measures to take the game away from the whole Tank, DPS, Heal trinity by making everyone fit these roles. The game was designed to encourage working with other players, and assisting them when downed.

While adding a DPS meter may sound like a simple harmless thing at first when you look at the intricacies of the system you will quickly discover that all it will do is force change to the player mentality and destroy the concept of working as a group.

There is a reason why in most MMOs the DPS classes wait hours for groups while the Healers and Tanks get groups instantly. Tanks and Healers typically don’t care about how high their DPS is, they have a single purpose and they focus on that. While a DPS player more often than not is focused solely on how high their numbers are. When the same players are thrown into a game like GW2 where DPS doesn’t matter the Healer and Tank adjust to the playstyle easily and assist others as though it were second nature, while the DPS player still focuses on their numbers but hindered by the lack of a visual meter they to adapt. Introduce a meter later and those DPS players who adapted will return to focusing only on their numbers and never help a downed ally up or toss any group buffs/heals when needed but instead focus solely on themselves.

What you are asking for is to take a group oriented game and add a single element that will turn 90% of the players into self centered egotistic DPS crunchers. We don’t want that.

I’m sorry if the last part came off as harsh but it’s true.

bravo! * claps enthusiastically * you said this perfectly. thank you.

this is silly, sorry, but it’s silly. truth? if you alt-F4, you’re out instantly. yes, life does interfere with gaming — IF i am called from the computer while out-and-about in the world? i accept that i’m PROBABLY gonna come back dead or, if i’m gone THAT long, naked.

those cases? i alt-F4.

as for the mists, for those who don’t know: the first time you go into the mists, you’ll need to run a map-course to get to the portal that takes you into lion’s arch. AFTER that, on your account, not character, you can instantly go into the mists, walk a few yards, and be in lion’s arch without paying waypoint fees. as for returning to where you are? i dunno that that’s possible, i’ve never found a way to do it.

but if i have to be called away from my computer? i’ll take the time to run back to where i am. you put a toggle like you’re talking about in the game, folk will just stop attempting to rez. i like rezzing folk, i like knowing some friendly person’s gonna happen by and rez me. this is the game.

It’s already been proposed that there could be a toggle on/off preview option for people who don’t want to be inspected.
Also, it’s not a gear based game, it’s more skill-based.
Stop using this argument, you’re beating a dead horse here.

I agree completely, the Toggole on/off button would fix that elitism issue.

Personally, being able to inspect another characters armor/gear can be motivating and spark further interest in the game.

And instead of nerfing, buff the UP things. Balance is boring and, speaking directly, you’ll never reach e-Sports.

I’ve seen many games destroyed in the name of Balance. Balance does lead to boring predictable gameplay with no tactics.

Imbalance creates exciting unpredictable gameplay. As long as each side has it’s own strengths and weaknesses to the other side. (ex. in old Socom’s Seals had the best weopans while terrorists had the map advantage.)

in a NUTshell, this. one of the reasons wow became the badword in gaming is BECAUSE they did SO much to dumb down the game in the name of "fairness" and "balance." people have said, forever, that a GOOD player CAN find a way to work around any build, any profession -- it's the bad players who start screaming/crying, and developers get stupid and bring out the nerfbat.

anet, c’mon guys. LOOK at the beautiful professions you’ve given us. stop a moment and THINK that YOU built some of these professions to be heavily aoe-dependent. then tell me/us in WHAT world it makes sense to make those professions useless?? yeah, i’m talking necro, i’m talking ele, i’m talking engineer …

truth is, “rules” whether written, exhorted, programmed in — what-have-you — CAN not replace courtesy, common sense, and gamesmanship. no matter WHAT you try to do to mandate others’ behavior, those who choose to do so WILL find loopholes. they WILL take advantage of those loopholes. they will, in short, make life miserable, and laugh about it, for as many folk as they can.

when you choose to pug, you accept this risk, knowing that the developers’ hands are tied past certain reasonable limits. one of those reasonable limits would be a majority vote requirement; not really hard to program, simply changing a rule/condition. but don’t hold the company/developer responsible for mandating player behavior. if you pug on your server? make note of the idiots. share that information around. if you pug on overflow? * shudders * i can’t even imagine it.

No, this does not need to be in the game. The ability to stay alive in a dungeon is what we rate people by, not by what numbers they can do. I don’t see how this would add any challenge into the game other than a unwanted competition between players.

Making things more challenging and more fun involves improving the dungeons. We need more mechanics rather than the boss having a big health pool and a one shot skill. That’s what we’re missing, not a damage meter.

9) Guilds: Specifically? A guild-greet type deal, SEPARATE from system messages, so that guildies can select the option to see/not see who logs in/out, TO APPEAR IN GCHAT
10) Loot Tables: It is utterly crazy to know I can get a rare drop off a common trash mob, but can down any Champion and get either no chest, or a chest with a white or blue item in it. This is the reason so very few people bother with the Krait witch events!
Miscellaneous Items: Patch notes — more comprehensive and accurate!

I don’t agree with more skill slots — I like having to pick and choose which weapon I will used BASED on the given abilities for that weapon. I think it makes me work harder at my character development. I’d hate to see it changed.

see, i’m exactly the opposite. first of all, i am part of a guild that came together, over years, from many other games; we have history. but, i (recruiter) am also ALWAYS on the lookout for others who might help fill in our happy little family — provide diversity, and increase fun.

by and large, all of us have the same things in common:

1) we’re all massive altaholics (i have 10 characters i play regularly, if that’s any indication)
2) we’re all, by nature, explorers (we are constantly roaming the maps, pointing out to each other “new” stuff we stumble upon in familiar territory)
3) we’re a highly social bunch who do things like karma runs, jumping puzzles, and map exploration together, as a group
4) we enjoy the time of play where we DON’T have to be/do with others, cuz we just want some downtime, but like knowing our guildies are “right there” if we want/need

for us, this game has no clear-cut end date. anet’s promise to keep new content coming, and their so-far ability to meet that promise, keeps us on tenterhooks when the monthly content is released. some of us have an 80, or two, or three … and are still finding new ways to play a profession we’ve already leveled. some of us enjoy just sitting and chatting while we do whatever it is we’re doing.

the game, i believe, is what you’re able to make of it. i know SO many people who are of the mind-set that “i only need one level 80, so i refuse to level more! why should i have to repeat content?” and so on and so on. i think those are missing the point. you see, there are eight professions. i’ve learned that EACH profession has something new and exciting to it, and not a single one that i’ve tried have i disliked. yeah, i love my thief best of all, but i love them ALL. that level of exploration is its own reward. then, you throw in the fact that you have FIVE races, with differing storylines PER race as well as WITHIN each race. SO much to see and explore there!

and on the competition thing? i love the spirit of cooperation anet has fostered, with this game, as opposed to the mindless “mineyoucan’thaveit!” fostered in previous games. from mobs to gathering nodes to events, anet has designed a game to allow and encourage cooperation, and provide a means of competition for those who want it.

my way of play may be vastly different than yours; however, i’m more grateful than words can say that anet has created a game that so perfectly caters to what i, and quite a few like me, have been seeking.

yeah. we’ll be here for a while.

In fact, there should probably be some kind of system or report function that right away punishes people for doing that.

thus creating yet another area of oversight required. ugh, the paperwork!

I think there is a technical difficulty in implementing your suggestion. I imagine it would be difficult to return tokens instead of gold. Also, it brings up the problem of equipment swapping within a dungeon vendor, so implementing a timer based vendoring system would be needed. Again, more technical difficulties.

For now, I believe that the confirmation system is adequate in preventing mistakes such as this.

actually, consider the fact that ALL currency in game is electronic in nature — gold, silver, copper, tokens. it’s just a field assigned a value in a database. given that, no, it’s not difficult to return tokens, as opposed to gold … additionally, as has been mentioned, it IS a common feature in most games.

we have orr. yeah, orr gets boring after a while. but the THEORY behind it is, i believe, sound. my guild, weekly, does “karma runs,” where we’ll hop on our level 80 characters and go run around orr. now — what’re the differences between orr, and raids? let me encapsulate them:

1) no need to prepare a group — grouping/“raid group” is unnecessary
2) no need to grind gear in order to participate, nor to be effective
3) open to “solo” — i.e., you can easily find zergs, hook up, and run with them

what are the similarities?

1) many of the events require larger groups to achieve the goal — for instance, the progressive events leading to the re-taking of a temple
2) better loot at the end of the run

so. orr is, in some ways, gw2s answer to raids. however, it’s lacking a couple of things that hardcore raiders WANT:

1) a united objective that is achievable by THAT PARTICULAR GROUP
2) “better gear”
3) dedicated raid groups
4) progression

put simply, i think, #4 is the biggie. i will, because i want to give lots of credit to the player base, completely overlook #2 (grins). i’ve been told by a raider friend that she can put together a raid group, in wow, for a specific purpose, and NO one else is going to partake in her/her group’s success. that means something to her; it means less to me. but i understand that sense of ownership. furthermore, because the events, INCLUDING the build-up events, repeat, there’s no real sense of progression. for instance, when we take dwayna’s temple, it doesn’t remain taken. there is no instanced way for us to go back to dwayna’s temple, to walk around, to recount the fight for others, to talk to the vendors. raids have a weekly save; orr has whatever the time period is between events.

i say, find a balance. find a way to provide, at the LEAST, a sense of progression — even if that means you “save” dwayna for a week — let people be able to bask in the sense of “i was a part of that. that was so cool.”

when you know that something will be repeated in an hour or so, it loses its sense of majesty, of urgency. i don’t advocate raids coming to gw2, because i don’t want to get back in to #2 and #4. but i do advocate some way to let players feel that sense of “epic.”

another thing? how long is orr going to remain lost? forever? how sad, if so.

While gold sinks are absolutely required in a game economy, disposable tools that require finding the right kind of vendor every 1-2 days are absolutely not required. This is an obvious quality of life issue that will hopefully be addressed sooner rather than later.

I’m sure that there were people in WoW opposed to removing arrows as inventory items for hunters that needed to be purchased and managed in terms of bag space, but they were removed from the game as a quality of life improvement. Not trying to use WoW or this issue in WoW as a standard of measure, simply illustrating how quality of life issues generally play out over time in games. It makes no sense to enshrine Tools that disappear after a days use as a necessary element of game design.

and on this one? IF the vendors in local areas sell the CORRECT tools (i.e., a vendor in iron marches should NEVER be selling only copper or iron tools) then this is slightly less of a problem. while my example above may be incorrect, my statement is correct. many vendors in zones do not carry the correct tools FOR that zone, which is problematic.

One simple adjustment. Allow the stacking of tools to 250 like everything else and allow you to add to a diminished stack. IE You have 10 left so you buy 200 and stack em to 210

THIS i concur with heartily!

Why do people want the level cap to increase, btw? It’s just the same game with bigger numbers

Because for most people character progression stops at the level cap; forget phat lewt and gear, I’m talking about character abilities and skill, the continued evolution of playstyle for the class you’re playing, gear generally just makes you more ‘powerful’ without changing the way you play.

And I suggest most games players want more than arriving at the destination (ie. the level cap) then sit there forever running the same content.

True, some games manage this without actually increasing the level number (eg. FFXI with their ‘merit’ system, Rift with PAs. etc) but generally mobs also have to increase in strength to keep balance with increased character power; for that, and other reasons, it seems to me that non-level based character progression tends to be unsatisfactory.

I don’t understand MMO players. You just want something to aim for, and when you get there, you get nothing but slightly larger numbers than everyone else? But not really because then everyone else has the same numbers?

Why not make things to do instead of increasing the level cap so instead of a wild goose chase for meaningless rewards, you can actually have fun. Isn’t that what games are for, fun, right? Something with replay value in it apart from just exploiting past stuff to grind for meaningless kitten to look pretty in something where there’s nothing to do. I mean Wub and Fractals and getting Dungeon Master can only go so far.

Thing is, people want to get better and advance, its generally a really exciting feeling when you break through.
That said, for me gear isnt that exciting or the number crunch.
what is exciting is getting new abilities, skills, and refining your favorite skill setups. hence why people feel a desire for more skill points, although their solution would actually make each build less unique overall.

What they could do is have you unlock traits/skills through content. but leaving current limits, like 70 points, and your current amount of slots, so you still have to choose.

Another possibility is to have a lot of new and challenging content to do (if its not challenging it wont give the feeling of breaking through and achieving something great) But that would probably not be maintainable, and generally would need better rewards, which starts to make it the only way to do things.

you know, i understand about wanting to play your character to its max ability. what i don’t understand is the need to play to max ability, but please-give-me-more-to-max, instead of working within what is. for instance, i played and played and played through thief, redoing my thief’s traits numerous times, until i found a build that 1) does HUGE damage and 2) is AMAZINGLY survivable. THAT was thrilling.

my husband recently did the same thing, on his warrior. again, THAT was thrilling.

i don’t think the answer is always, “give me more to play with, what you have isn’t enough to do what i want.” i think sometimes (and yeah, i look at life this way, too) the answer has to be “how can i be the best i can be with what i have?”

anet has given us a tremendous amount of customization. for all those who are stuck at the “go-find-the-right-build-on-the-internet-then-copy-it-stage” you’re short-changing yourself. you’re not really learning the profession, you’re parroting what someone else did, in order to get those big numbers.

what i love about this game is that it goes back to two simple things:
1) did i live through the fight?
2) did the bad guy die

we’ve forgotten the joy in those two things, in the search for ever-bigger numbers … and really? if 1 and 2 are met, then the job is done, and the numbers? they don’t matter.

lenneth. the gear i was transmuting was a starter-level necro wraith mask, onto a white level 15 mask. the gold ‘mute stones USED to work, but don’t now. the silver? for some reason do. yes, i am aware that they’ll ‘mute ANY gear; however, they’re not SUPPOSED to be REQUIRED for any gear lower than level 80. anything under level 80 should be ‘mutable by the gold ones. so. problem sorta solved — i can ’mute the mask. but — glitch? bug? they don’t work as they used to, nor, i would assume, as they’re intended, since you should be able to ’mute a starter-level item onto a level 15 item without resorting to the silver stones.

that’s one of the pieces i’m having issues with, while my guildmate CAN ‘mute hers. annoying — but her nec was created a few weeks before mine was. in fact, i believe on a previous version of my nec, i was able to ’mute the facepiece. it’s the mask, and a glove, and a boot … same level as a chest that can be ’muted. so, yeah, annoying as all get-out.
