The Never Ending Repertoire of Ranger Builds
Salt of the Earth {SALT} Crystal Desert© ~~Dragon Rank~~
+1
I approve of all these changes! ^
Especially Dust Trap, I want a smoke field!
For the first build you posted, i noticed you use 2 traits for a single utility skill, which is your only condi removal every 32 secs…hard to stay on point against a terrormancer.
The 2 variations are pretty cool, ill be trying them
Don’t forget Entangle, so one utility and one elite. It’s still very little condi removal unfortunately. But that’s also a Turret Engie’s weakness too.
Arrow is ignoring me.
@Topic
Videos please!
I promise I’m not ignoring you on purpose. I read your PM right before heading home from work, and frankly, forgot to respond. Ill get back to you via PM.
@Everyone else, thanks for checking it out. I promise it’s a lot of fun to mess around with. I certainly hope you guys can/will come up with variations and improvements.
I know someone’s going to say that Spirit Rangers have been around since beta. I understand that. But how many Spirit Rangers have you seen running with a Longbow, traited Shouts, traited SotF, Soldiers ammy, Knights ammy or Clerics ammy? You don’t. that’s what makes these builds different.
Carry on.
First off I would like to to mention that this does not and in no way replace the current home or far point Turret Engie cheese that we often see. It does however offer an alternative way to bunk a point. It can also offer additional team support along with massive healing for your team in my second example of the “Turret Engie – Ranger Style”. Below are two builds. The first build can be used for home point bunking, home and mid point roaming and dueling. The second build is only for home and far point bunking. See below for explanations.
Definitions
Trolling
- Being a prick on the internet because you can. Typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks on an innocent by-stander, because it’s the internet and, hey, you can.
Cheese
- Cheese is often regarded as “cheap” or “dirty” play, as the player cheesing does not try to counter their opponent or adjust their strategy. Having a lack of player skill can be made up by playing a “cheese” build.
Turret Engie - Cheese Edition
- A well known build that is considered trolling by most and cheese by all. One simply places Turrets on a node and camps while waiting for an unsuspecting enemy to come along. Then the Engie proceeds to run in circles, allowing the turrets and AI to do all the work. Unleashing knockbacks, knockdowns, immobilizes and more knockbacks. Simply put, a cheese build that carries the Engie.
Can a Ranger become like the Turret Engie?
Turret Engie – Ranger Style Home and mid point defender – Mobile Version
- This particular build is the mobile version and offers numerous knockdowns, knockbacks, immobilizes, cripples, blinds, bleeds, projectile blocking, evades spams, stealth and lots of damage.
Build
Turret Engie – Ranger Style Home and Far point defender only
- This build is designed to act just like a turret Engie. Your Spirits do not move. They are stationary like an Engie’s Turrets. Place them strategically on a point so that you use them to block projectiles. Draw your enemy’s into them before activating them.
Variation One – Build - More Condi removal, weaker Hyena’s
Variation Two – Build - Less Condi removal, stronger Hyena’s
That’s it. I hope you guys try this build out for trolling and funsies. I’m almost certain you’ll here other players call you “cheese” every now and then.
If anyone can think of a better way to imitate a Turret Engie, please make suggestions.
(edited by ItIsFinished.9462)
There is a reason no good team runs a ranger, they are underpowered if anything.
No good team runs a Ranger because they don’t have anyone who knows how to utilize the class to its fullest. Let alone skillful at playing it either.
Are there any top level pvp Rangers left? Teamq or Soloq…I’m looking for help

Take your pick. Any of these guys have the knowledge you’re seeking.
Hi,
I am looking for high level pvp Rangers to talk to. Are there currently any top 100 people that are Rangers that have Twitch or vids?
It doesn’t matter if they are Teamq or soloq.

Take your pick. Any of these guys have the knowledge you’re seeking.
It’s not like i don’t want to face them, it’s like i don’t want to face them if they’re FULL TEAM while i’m SOLO with other SOLOERS.
I get you. We’re collecting data for this entire ladder, and don’t think the ladder scoring rules are the only things we care about.
We’ve been discussing the issue and working on changes that should help with this. The only thing likely off the table (for now) is hard-filters.
If hard filters were introduced, wouldn’t it be easier to just introduce ladders then?
Who’s Backpack?
Can Anet make some sort of info graphic that visually depicts how a player gains Leaderboard Ranks points? I feel that having a visual representation of the overall layout of how Rank points are earned per Player/Team will help ease some of the public worry on how the current system is setup. I’m sure it will help others bring forward various ideas of how it can be improved as well.
The content of it would be simple

Anyone else have an opinion on something like this? Do we need it? Are we #esports enough for something like this?
If any of you are familiar with Knight Online, they had two areas outside of town that were kind of like a coliseum style area/arena. It had an invisible line that when a player crossed it, it would put them in combat mode. And anyone could attack anyone. It essentially became a King of the Hill style area, people would sit right outside the line and watch people duel. Someone would lose, they would leave another would enter.
wow. i found a fellow ex knight online player in gw2!:D the best (unknown) mmo game ever made:P
To this day, I still think KO had the best PvP out of all the mmo’s I’ve played by far. What server did you play on?
ares and later europe. you?
Ah, I was on Logos. My favorite part about that game was the borderlands or whatever it was called and the magic forge. Were you ever able to get an item to +9?

Courtyard is always going to be 0 500
I’ve never had a close courtyard game.
Why? Because it’s an elimination match that keeps going and the other team can never catch up.
I just had a match in Courtyard 400-25.
Told the team to stick together. We ended up winning 450-500.
Keep it going if you play ranger! This is the kind of postitive thread (and experience overall) that will always benefit the community. Even if you’re not confident, give it a shot – there are plenty of builds that should beat what I’m currently king with =D
Your in my friends list, and I keep looking for you, but you’re never online. Do you have two accounts?
Sigil of Earth is wasted on S/Wh because you will apply 2 stacks at max and fighting with sword doesn’t grant many hits on the enemy. It’s better if you go with geomancy for longer and more bleeds.
I agree with you on this one, but if i had geomancy on axe, any other sigils you suggest OP or solrik?
Keep in mind that you will have 60% Condition Duration so the procs from Sigil of Earth jump to 8 second bleeds. But if you want to use a different Sigil, try Sigil of Torment.
Oh i forgot to mention, this is for the spvp build. :p sorry
For sPvP, Generosity, Energy, Leeching or Earth

Added the sPvP version.Uhmm, u tested the spvp version, I admit it is a lot of fun, But my pet dies really quickly in some cases, thats why i was asking you If a BM variant is possible with the same weapon sets, LB is so good with the stacking bleeds.
Are you using dual Drakes? Because they don’t fast. Besides, most of your damage is coming from the Ranger. The pet is there to block projectiles for stomps etc.
As for a more BM type build, unless you make drastic changes you won’t be able to pull it off. Right now its designed to condition bomb your opponent and do some decent raw damage. If you start taking points out of the Marksmanship or Skirmishing lines, your damage will go down. Your only alternative is to take points out of the Wilderness Survival line and throw them into the Beastmastery line. But then you’ll lose your condi removal as well as Toughness.
May I suggest the following?
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNBMhNakQlWWrZxfFuWDYIUtbhMoEYGANwzjNZz4oPeFB-TJRFwAAODAsfEAp2f4ZZAA
It’ll make your pets a little stronger, they’ll have about the same amount of crit chance you have w/o fury, and will cause bleeding on critical hits.
You lose Ranger power, the “Keen Edge” trait, some precision (only 7%), and vulnerability stacks. You gain 200 power in your pets attacks, pet swapping 20% recharge, and might on pet swap.
That definitely looks like an option StickerHappy can try out that might work.
Did you happen to give Sigil of Incapacitation a try?
I haven’t yet, but I’m going to give it a try.

The scenario you give is a bit weird. The reason I say that is because you did what you shouldn’t have done. I’m really surprised that you tried to walk towards him while he was range-ing you. All you had to do was LOS him. The Ranger would of had to do one of two things….either move on or come towards you.
It’s obvious the Ranger was pure glass. Therefore 2-3 hits from a warrior could mean the Rangers downfall. Wait for his immune to wear off then burst him down.
Haaa the nostalgia, good times ItIsFinished, good times. BTW, how didnt you make updated Bleeding Hearts Build with krait runes?
I just haven’t gotten around to it. I’ve been doing a lot of sPvP lately. Although, I did make an sPvP version of the build. I’m not sure if I posted it to the forums or not, but you can find it here.
It works quite well in sPvP.
Do pet interrupts proc Perplexity runes? Just leveled my ranger to 80, got berserker gear. Now I’m moving on to a condition set preferably s/d and shortbow, but I’m wondering if pet interrupts proc perplexity runes. If not then I might need to switch to axe offhand for the pull interrupt. Any build recommendations would be nice as well.
Here you go:
Watch the video to see it in action. It’s even better with the new LB changes and take note of the updated build link in the original post. Have fun!
I’m sorry, but why isn’t SoS fine to begin with? Honestly, it’s the only signet I think actually works and is balanced overall.
I recently fought a full-signet-stab thief on my ranger in a 1v1. I run full glass and stopped using SoS because it felt cheap.
Fight a good Thief, and that cheap feeling will be gone forever.
Example, in your scenario, all the thief had to do was chain Stealth twice while your SoS was active…..that’s it.
This isn’t rocket science…
I’ve been running Signet of Stone and Protect Me since the patch. Trust me, it may seem like you have 12 seconds of invulnerability, you really don’t. The only time it plays out like that is if you are going against a class that deals nothing but raw damage.
Works against:
Doesn’t work against:
My guess is the OP was also running Glass LB (raw damage) and was impressed by the other Rangers’ Prowess
I get nasty PM’s from other Glass Rangers calling me hacker etc because they see “0” damage for 12 seconds.
Take your Signet of Stone and Protect Me against a condi Necro/Engi, or anything condi and let me know how that goes.
Axe mainhand? Uhh.. I didn’t watch EU’s tourny, but I bet if he was focused, he went down quick. I would have chosen S/D instead.
(edited by ItIsFinished.9462)
It’s from the Defense against Guards buff line in WvW.
first off, grats Arrow (ItIsFinished), :]
I have school, otherwise i’d compete myself. But i’m happy you’re making us look good with ur mad rangr skillz
Haha, thanks Shadow.
-Troll unguent is a heal over duration, pop it earlier in fight so you have full health for the first 10 sec, so it allow you to survive 15 sec (until another heal) at 100% health.
This is a huge tip. I see a lot of rangers pop Troll Unguent when they are 50% health and below. Popping TU at 90% health can actually change the outcomes of battles.
I love popping TU when I see a Thief go into stealth, dodge roll to get your protection buff, then watch as the Thief spills his burst only to leave the Rangerwith almost full health.
What’s the point of the handicap? I mean other than to prevent the same guy staying winner forever if we imagine someone could, I know it’s meant to be lighthearted fun to see new innovative builds rather than a tourney to see who’s the best but the handicap kinda defeats that purpose if you ask me, wouldn’t it be better not to have that we might actually find some new build that proves unbeatable (by other rangers)
you answered your own question in the first sentence. it not about finding which is the most OP because typically a good play in a bad build will bet a bad player in a good build anyway.
It’s about having fun, being inventive, and an excuse get petty/trolly over something that don’t actually matter. If one person gets to the hill stays there permanently then this adventure would die and loose its fun very quickly.
Yeah yeah I get that but I still don’t see a problem with someone staying ontop of the hill because he plays his build really well he already has a “handicap” in that someone can make a build to specifically counter his as best as it’s possible anyway, just my opinion on the matter…
While I agree with you 100% Manekk, it seems that people may become uninterested in trying out if someone is on the hill for 10-15+ defenses. Plus, this way, it gives others a chance to get the Hill, even if its for one opponent due to the handicap introduction.
But at the same time, Fluffball brings up a good point. If more rangers become interested, maybe he can bump up the amount of defenses before requiring a handicap.
Congrats to jcbroe for taking the hill! It was tough with two handicaps and was totally expected to be a hard match. Being my 7th opponent, I had two handicaps and ended up dueling him with this build. No Sigils and only 12 Trait points. Picking a handicap for myself was a real challenge. Knowing that I would have to carry it over to my next opponent(if I had one).
But either way, it was a lot of fun. I met a lot of good Rangers in game and got to play with a few old friends. I think the funnest part about this King of the Hill challenge is coming up with builds that counter the current King’s build. Other rangers get a chance to “try their build” so to speak. And all the Rangers that are looking for builds or even the seasoned Rangers that might see something with someones build and spark an idea for something new and fresh.
I hope we end up getting more people to participate. Good luck guys.

Very good duels, SadKeanu.3491. It was close both fights. I’m not sure what build he was running. It completely threw me off as I was getting pegged hard by his axes. It almost looked like he was stacking Might with axe auto’s. Anyway, I can already tell that handicaps are going to bring down any king off of their hill fast.
(edited by ItIsFinished.9462)
Trying to come up with a build that uses shortbow, but so far the only success I’ve had is not very effective, if it can be called success at all.
I simply took a cleric’s amulet, a SB with S/W with energy and leeching sigils on both sets. Then took LR, Mud, a SoS (But not fixed).
Went full BM and took the quickdraw trait in Skirmishing.
The build got called a “troll” build by a thief because of the high healing.
All that aside…
Is there any viable but still possible to kill with SB build for pvp?
This is what I would use going against Bakeyy’s current build. Counter build Only swap to Sw/D when he closes the gap. Then use Sword #2 to create a huge gap, switch back to SB. Try to stay out of his Entangle range(600) and it should go in your favor. If you don’t want to use Sun Spirit, switch it out for SoR, then switch the two traits to Evasive Purity and Strength of Spirit
Hope you guys had fun, would be cool to see the challanger builds in the post as well. And I hate to harp on it, but a link in the original post to the current ruling king’s post would be nice.
It doesn’t look like hes going to post his build, so I’ll take a stab at what I thought he was running. GS/LB 6/6/?/?/? RTW, EE, MoC, QD

So the first fight wasn’t even close. I wasn’t sure what he was running…pure power or pure condis. It was pure power, and it wasn’t even close. He killed me with about 70% of his life left. The second fight I adjusted. Got lucky on kiting…again. My bird did a lot of damage since I was unable to hit 1500+ range. The third fight was close. I had about 3-4k health left when I downed him. Luckily, my healing was off CD.
For the record, we dueled two more times for fun, and he beat me both times. So I know that he will be rematching soon, and I’ll probably lose the hill. Or someone else will catch on and realize my build is vulnerable to EE’s range.
Anyways, was good dueling with you Erantien.4632. I look forward to the rematch.
(edited by ItIsFinished.9462)
ItIsFinished on a RAMPAGE defense, I did some drunken duels with him tonight and he performed just as well.
How is EU going?
Don’t forget once you get in the realm of about 5 or 7 consecutive defenses, consider dethroning yourself and coming back with a different build. This is up to the king, if every defense is a brutal struggle, you might stay, if you are slaughtering people, you might use the same build with a self imposed handicap.
Also I’d like to point out there has yet to be a MoC build in this.
I totally agree. I would suggest that after 5 opponent’s, the sixth one gets to choose out of a pool of handicaps. And each handicap is piggy backed for every duel after.
For example lets say the handicap pool consists of these choices:
The sixth opponent would choose 1 handicap. If the King wins, he has to keep that handicap for the next fight. So the seventh opponent picks another handicap and so on.
This is only a suggestion and hope to hear from other Rangers inputs.

@Eggyokeo.9705, it was 2 good battles, I think the Longbow really helped me in our two fights. As I was able to keep a good distance. I look forward to dueling/practicing with you again.
@Jhughes.8341, I had a feeling you were running conditions due to your equipped weapons, and having only SoR in your utilities. I was right, and when you popped Sun Spirit, then Spirit of Nature, I recognized it as Tanbin’s build. I thought I was toast, but somehow my kiting saved me. You had me sweating big time….
Nice to meet you guys and GF’s!
16secs is nothing when you block, dodge and blind
Actually, it’s huge. The Ranger (regardless of the “lengthy” cooldowns – more on that later) has 16s to kill the target while taking virtually -0- damage in return (pet is made mostly useless for damage output but utility is still there). In 16s, you can kill any target that is not actively defending itself for a majority of that time when you are geared for “Glass” Cannon Power (“Glass” is quoted because you are just Cannon Power during your iWin uptime). No class has the equivalent of 16s/Protection boon for more reduced damage.
It’s not per se Longbow and Rapid Fire. It’s the compilation of Longbow Rapid Fire along with Signet of Stone + Protect Me + Dodge/Protection Boon + Evades on melee weapons (and a Signet of Energy and/or Lightning Reflexes too). It’s crazy and it’s not just because of Longbow Rapid Fire. IMO, Rapid Fire is fine compared to the low-skill iWin buttons of SoS and PM chained together.
Now lengthy cooldowns…yeah, see ~60s is not a lengthy cooldown. Warriors have the most comparable utilities (1) Endure Pain at 60s cooldown and (2) Defy Pain a Grandmaster trait at 60s cooldown but uncontrolled (25%). But guess what, Warriors are only 4s in length compared to Ranger’s 6s (a free 4s more!) …but the Warrior has more base health + SoR …well, see Rangers have this wonderful thing called Protection on dodge and Troll Ungent (ergo, 15 point investment for Ranger into Wilderness Survival/Toughness line for Companion’s Defense + 10 in Marksmanship/Power – you know that trait line you are already heavily invested in – versus 30 point investment for Warrior into Defense/Toughness line for Defy Pain).
Do you think that Warriors no damage time is also balanced?
Also, when are people going to start using Rampage as One in their build and realize next to nothing will stop them 1vX for 16s?
This Ranger build that you speak of. Is it a 6/6/6/6/6 build?
Does this stack with the Signet of the Wild regeneration?
Yes
Okay, I’ll be on and off tonight then. Taking a short break now and will be on later. 1-2 hours from now. I can stay up tonight. Hopefully

Was fun fighting you Archon. I knew after the first 3 seconds of the fight when conditions started dropping, it wasn’t going to be easy. First fight was kinda close, the second fight was even closer. All in all, they were great fights. It was also nice to meet you in game.
I’ll challenge you to a friendly little duel sometime today if you are free. Love your build. Thanks for posting!
I’ll be on and off all day today. Catch me in game when you are ready.
- The current King/Queen will have a post listing their build in this thread. This build cannot be changed until defeating someone, upon which they may pick 2 points from the below list to alter:
- change 2 sigil’s worth of weapons
- reallocate 2 trait points
- change 2 major traits
- change 2 utilities
- change 1 pet
Each victory will allow the above choice again. You are not required to change your build.
Just to clarify, according to the above rule, at what point am I allowed to exercise them? Can I do it before my next opponent?
Edit: Oh, after re-reading, it sounds like each victory I am allowed to exercise the above changes?

Good fights Fluffball! The first fight I was trying to get a feel for what I was up against. I knew he was going to throw out a lot of range damage at the beginning, getting up close and alternating my weapon swaps so that they were opposite of his melee and taking advantage of Whirling Defense helped.
The second fight went a little quicker. I think Fluffball may have messed up a rotation. Not sure, but either way, was a pleasure dueling/practicing with him.
Wait, I need him!
Are you going to be on in the next 20-30 minutes?
the poison applied by your pets via Poison Master uses your condition damage and duration, and with food you have enough between a petswap and a weapon skill to keep perma poison without doom sigils (swapped doom sigils for earth).
I’ve had an issue lately. I’ve made a poison master/condi build, but all my pets conditions only do base damage (45 for bleed, 88 for poison, etc). They don’t use any condition stats, except the +350 condition on pets trait, and might stacked. Without these it’s 0. Sometimes my pet poison even overrides my own poison mastered poison (450 damage/s, becomes 88 damage per sec).
Anyone having this issue as well?
Yeah, the whole point of Running PM is so you can take any pet, even birds and have them apply Poison. Any pet that has poison application will override PM’s ticks.
