How far away should i play from the bots?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Jinx.7945

Based on Gaile’s post, playing near bots is not bannable in ArenaNet’s opinion.

From a practical perspective, there is a risk in other players thinking you’re a bot and reporting you. Players I know wouldn’t do this based on a single battle in a tight area. They would watch for longer than that before reporting. They’d have to think you are a bot, not just that maybe you are, maybe you aren’t.

But really, this is a call you’ll have to make. Do you think you’re doing something that will look like a bot to other players, and if so, is it worth doing anyway because it’s probably too quick for them to report you before you’re obviously behaving differently? Or how much do you care if they report you because when ArenaNet Support looks, they won’t see bot behavior? Those are risk questions that only you can answer.

Waypoints ruin the game.

Why do you care if I choose to teleport instead of running through the same terrain again? How does my “missing out” on revisiting paths through what you see as a beautiful world ruin the game for you? (Don’t get me wrong, parts of it are stunning in my opinion. Other parts are definitely not.) Do you even know whether or not I do this? And what does adding a delay solve?

I don’t mean to be combative; I’m missing your logic on this.

Yep, don’t worry. It’s easy not to look like you’re one of them when you can clearly see what they’re doing and what paths they’re taking. No worries in killing or running after the same mob.

Stated a different way, don’t look like a bot when playing near bots. You don’t want another player to mistake you for a bot and report you. So, don’t follow them around, running exactly where they run as if you’re tied to them in some way. Behave differently from them—not because ArenaNet thinks what you’re doing is wrong, but because somebody may mistake you for a bot, and you don’t want the hassle of having to open a Customer Support ticket and provide data to prove them wrong.

But being in the same area, doing the same events, killing the same creatures because you happen to intersect—that’s ok.

Time to do something with servers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jinx.7945

Jinx.7945

I prefer it the way it is. I like that the player can choose based on their own criteria. Want better ping time (I haven’t seen anything that says there are significant differences, but the servers are in different geographic locations, I believe)? Pick a server in you region. Want to play with a friend or relative half-way around the world? Pick one together, anywhere. Want a server with lots of players on at the same time as you? Pick a server in your region. Want to speak a different language in-game than most of your region speaks? Pick a server where the language is spoken more.

Bottom line: I’m against strict regional servers, and I think there are advantages to naming the servers by region because it still helps you find the server you’ll have the most fun on.

That type of camera control was made because of the limitations of consoles and then passed on to other games. If you didn`t notice, console garbage is influencing PC games a lot, and not for the better.

Actually, come to think of it, it`s really sad that someone could consider PC camera controls a bug. I`m glad at least Anet knows the difference even if you don`t appreciate it.

Other than GW2, what PC game has left-click and right-click both turn just the camera when standing still, but left-click turn just the camera and right-click turn the whole character when moving?

I don’t know if it’s a “bug”, but I find it non-intuitive myself.

Edited to add: And how do you make your character rotate in place in this game?

I ran some statistics on [the results from opening 300,000 Wintersday Gifts posted in reddit]. Based on sample size (300,000) and observed Bell drops (15), we can be 95% confident that the overall drop rate lies between 0.0028% – 0.0082%.

(For the tonics, between 0.0014% – 0.0057%.)

Possibility of an actual roleplaying server?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jinx.7945

Jinx.7945

My wife doesn’t roleplay in Guild Wars.

Also, I can see by the replies in this thread that I seem to be the only person that would rather work and feel good about grabbing a tier 1 slot, instead of just becoming one by transferring.

You could always jump to another Tier 2 server since the others aren’t the unofficial RP server. That way, you can still feel good about working up to Tier 1. Or move to one at a lower tier if you want a greater sense of accomplishment. There’s no reason to move directly to a Tier 1 server if that’s not what you want to do.

I think part of the reaction you’re getting is that you want others to move off of the server because you see them as “holding you back” or impacting what you think is fun. Just move yourself. Your request comes across as asking a whole community of folks to move because you want something different than they do. They’re happy (or at least happy enough) with the server they’re on. If you’re not happy with it, move to one you’re more happy with.

False Bans

Jinx.7945

The difference between the two is in real life you got a SLIM chance of being in a situation where you can be falsely accused of something.

Cheating on your taxes? Rocking the craddle? All these situations involve you putting yourself in them and running the risk.

Wait, if you cheat on your taxes or otherwise break the law, you’re not innocent. I thought your analogy was about the people going about their daily lawful business that get thrown in jail anyway. If you’re cheating in-game, you should be banned.

Now, how often do people use Guild Banks? All the time! How often do people send money via the mailing system? All the time! And this is what people are getting banned for.

Yes, all the time, which is why I’m not concerned. I understand that you are—this is where we’ll just have to agree to disagree. You asked if others were concerned about continuing to do these very normal things done by lots of people in-game because of the number of posts about unfair bans. I’m not.

False Bans

Jinx.7945

Well, comparing a locked GW2 account to spending the rest of my life in jail when I’m innocent is a pretty extreme analogy. Even so, no, I don’t spend 1 second of my free, out-of-jail time agonizing because maybe someday I’ll be one of those innocents in jail forever. If it happens, I’ll deal with it then. There’s no use in wasting time now worrying about it happening someday.

Likewise, I’m going to enjoy the game without agonizing over the remote possibility that I’ll be mistakenly kicked off of it.

My assessment is that there was a tiny set of bans that shouldn’t have happened. The net to catch real-money traders was cast a little too broadly. I certainly don’t see a TON, though, given the number of players on this game.

And some of the reports here might not be factual. It’s the internet. People can say whatever they want. Gold-sellers would love it if ArenaNet eased up on bans and spent/wasted more time researching up-front. Why wouldn’t they join in on the cry that the bans are happening without enough due diligence?

I trust that ArenaNet will tune their filters better. They want us to be happy with the game and with how our own accounts are handled. In the meantime, I’m not going to worry over something where I have no control. What am I gonna do? Quit before they can make me sit out for a few days? I’d rather play.

What about making Uzolan’s Mechanical Orchestra playable? (I can’t take credit for the idea—another player mentioned it to me in bell choir.)

I’d love it if the mechanical orchestra became a mult-player mini-game similar to bell choir. Different players could play different orchestral instruments to produce a short concert. Like bell choir, players could join, pick an instrument and play, and leave as wanted. Perhaps there could be rewards similar to those given for good organ music. The important difference from the existing organs is that this would be a multi-player concert, not a solo one.

I’ve really enjoyed meeting other musically-inclined folk in bell choir. I’d like to see this sense of musical community continue and grow in-game.

Also consider a Warrior. When I was first starting, my Ranger died a lot because I wasn’t used to doing what it took to maintain distance from the fray. The Warrior has more armor and is meant to handle hand-to-hand battle as well as being able to fight at range.

Warriors don’t have pets, though. On the one hand, this means you won’t need to learn pet management right away. On the other hand, you can play a Ranger with default pet behavior at the beginning, anyway.

Jinx.7945

The only areas that may become really hard to play without population are the highest level Orr zones. And you don’t need to do those. There are other highest-level zones that don’t have the same density of mobs which makes Orr so difficult right now. The rewards just aren’t worth it in most of Orr for level 80 characters to run around there much.

Everything else in this game is geared toward being perpetually playable. As mentioned, when higher-level players go into lower-level zones, they are scaled down so that the content still presents some level of challenge. Further, the drops scale up so that there is also some level of reward. You don’t have to be grouped to help other players out (or be helped). Everyone gets their own private chance and version on any dropped loot. Dynamic Events scale to the number of folks participating, even if there’s just one. You also get notified about nearby events, and usually another player or 2 will run over and join in.

As somebody else mentioned, Christmas boosted the number of new players. There are always alt-oholics around making new characters. Definitely find an active guild.

Welcome!

with lots of people, 1 more is not going to matter. With my example, it was 1 person doing the event and 1 more joining them. With so few, it becomes likely that each will take half the responsibility. maybe they each defend a different side of the onslaught and each end up killing half of the mobs that attack.
I have no idea how they define ‘participate’, but with other things (like mob loot), they tend to do it based on hitting a mob. so if you only hit half of the mobs that attack, maybe you only participate 50%?
I’ve never actually noticed if I got gold, silver, or bronze from any event I’ve done. nor do I want to be that nit-picky :P

When my spouse and I (just us 2) tackle an event together, we’ll both get gold as long as we’re both doing damage for much of the duration of the event. It is mathematically impossible in this case for both of us to be doing >50% of the overall anything, and we still each get gold. It is possible that we each hit over half of the creatures since we both do AOEs, but in a large group of people for an event, I know I won’t hit anywhere close to half, and I still get gold.

The gold medal seems to be based on how much of the duration of the event your character spends in doing damage.

So, having another character join in does not negatively affect your chance at the gold level.

It seems he wasn’t truly satisfied with his number, so he opened even more gifts. http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/15omze/update_i_have_now_opened_300000_giant_wintersday/

15 Bells and 9 Toymaker Tonics after a grand total of 300,000 giant wintersday gifts. If true drop rate (he doesn’t think it is) he says the Bell droprate is 1/20000 (0.005%) and Tonic is 1/33333 (0.003%).

There’s some other stuff he puts like guesswork about how many bells / tonics will be in the market for this year and how many gifts will be sold by the time the event ends.

I ran some statistics on this. Based on sample size (300,000) and observed Bell drops (15), we can be 95% confident that the overall drop rate lies between 0.0028% – 0.0082%.

There is gold, silver, and copper in this game. Your total funds are 10 silver + 25 copper.

100 copper = 1 silver
100 silver = 1 gold

What you sold to the vendor was sold for copper, not gold. I’d bet you got ~50 copper, and some of that combined with copper you already had and flipped to +1 silver.

You can get them by going back to your lower level zone (1-15 for copper and green wood), or by exploring other lower level zones you haven’t seen, yet. You’ll have to buy or go mine / chop in a lower-level zone until your crafting level lines up better with your profession level.

I don’t think you’ll find an answer on #1 because that’s the sort of thing that’s really hard to know without specific details. What one person calls “casual swearing” may be another person’s “offensive swearing”. I’d say your best bet is to pretend there is no profanity filter when you’re in public chat spaces and act accordingly. If you know your swearing isn’t offensive to your group or guild, you don’t need to self-moderate there. If you think they might report you, moderate yourself there, too.

On question #3 – even if there was a filter, it could never be perfect. It’s always possible to construct a name that is offensive but will pass a filter. The existence of a name filter wouldn’t give you permission to use an offensive name any more than the chat filter gives you permission to use offensive language.

Don’t worry about the Dynamic Events, either. I’m always happy when nearby players join in. It is perfectly possible—and I’d say even likely—that everybody gets gold. My spouse and I often adventure together, and we almost always both get gold on the same DE. The level you get is dependent on your level of participation, but having others join in no way ruins your chance of gold as long as you are participating fully, too.

The only thing to be careful of is training mobs onto other players, as has already been mentioned. One of the aggro criteria in this game is simple proximity. If you train a mob near another player, it can switch to them even if they don’t attack first.

Other than that, this game has the most PVE world-friendly mechanics I’ve seen.
