My Ranger has a Krytan Drakehound called Sir Francis. Not exactly a topical reference, but Elizabethan history buffs may allow themselves a chuckle.
My “main” – in as much as I have one – is a human Warrior.
One of my alts is an Asura Warrior.
Reasoning is twofold:
1) I wanted a human of every class.
2) The Asura looks GREAT in Heritage Heavy Armour (IMO) and the way they run with a greatsword or a hammer amuses me so much, I simply had to have one.
I just realised I could achieve the same effect with an Asura Guardian.
It seems to me the way around that would be to have separate login details for the forum rather than use your game account. IMO that’s the security risk.
I am also playing the same way as the OP. I have still to decide which character I like the most so I change all the time.
If I’m the last player to get to Level 80, do you think anyone will want to interview me?
You know you play Guild Wars 2 too much if you can still hear the auto-attack sound effects in your head when you have logged off.
You know you play female human Guardian with a Greatsword too much when that sounds like “REEP! REEP! REEP!”
RuneQuest 6. If I ever get enough free time, I’d be tempted to write a supplement.
Wacha talking about? This is the only game that comes with the Clint Eastwood face.
:)
And, naturally, at character creation, I duly selected Clint and proceeded to create my character. However, while he looks brilliant when out and about doing his stuff, his face looks really weird (to me) during all the cut scene conversations in that “side on” pose. His face, ruggedly handsome in all other situations, looks bloated in profile with a caved-in centre.
It quite put me off playing him and I’ve gone eFemale for the majority of my alts!
…it’s a minor detail, I know.
Wow really they let you get that many slots? Seems excessive.
From a players point of view, I agree – and I’m a shameless altoholic. But from Anet’s perspective, I would imagine it’s a case of the more the merrier. Someone, somewhere, bought Gems to fund those additional slot (even if the player who is using them used ingame gold to buy the Gems).
All male why would i choose something i am not?
I’m with you, man! Fortunately, I happen to be an eight feet tall, heavily tattooed axe wielding female berserker in real life.
Except at weekends, when I’m an urbane, gnome-like creature, prone to tinkering with things and calling anyone bigger than me a bookah and cutting them to the quick with disparaging remarks about our comparative intellects…

Ten character slots:
8 Humans, one of each profession:
Male 5 (Warrior/Guardian/Mesmer/Necromancer/Ranger)
Female 3 (Elementalist/Thief/Engineer)
1 Asura Male Warrior
1 Sylvari Female Ranger
The Sylvari is simply reserving a name, the Human Warrior is currently my main and I choose a name before I choose anything else when creating a character so the gender is very much a secondary consideration.
I can’t pass by a Skritt without applying a slap.
It’s an unreasonable hatred stemming from my experiences in my first foray into the beta. I chanced upon a Skritt bottle lobber who was about three levels above me and I was unprepared for the encounter. Now, despite knowing better and obtaining sufficient levels on my main to handle Skritt in copious amounts in Queen’s Forest, I experience a kill or be killed reaction that ensures carnage will ensue whenever they’re around.
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve escorted Slim Mikhart on his mission to blow up their cave support.
And still they return. Still they plague me…
I bought and received the game I was promised and I’m really enjoying it.
I have enough cash for what I want to do and I don’t feel obliged to replay content unless I want to. I’ve made a couple of purchases from the Gem store with real money because I wanted to, not because I felt I needed to. I play for an amount of time almost every evening that is, I feel, in proportion to the rest of my work/family/other commitments balance without feeling that I am missing out, in anyway.
I can understand the frustration of the OP, but I don’t share it. I don’t think anyone will provide an answer that satisfies the OP because the matter being discussed is more to do with their perception of how things should be than it is with the design mechanics of the game – which, I feel, are entirely consistent with the stated aims of the game designers, even with the changes and modifications that have been made since beta.
I really don’t know what else to say.
I’d call it altoholism.
I’m the same. I maintain a stable of relatively low level characters and I switch between them every few days. I’ve been working on my Elementalist this weekend, but I have a feeling that tonight will be a Guardian evening.
I can’t explain it. While I’m enjoying myself – and I am – I’m not too bothered. I don’t doubt that the majority of players who are level 80 with their one and only character and have experienced a lot of what this game has to offer have also enjoyed themselves and will probably create one or more other characters with which to sample it all again. I’m just doing the same thing in a slightly different order!
The only drawback I have found is arranging to meet up with friends. I have not been able to participate in any Guild events arranged so far as I don’t have a single character with sufficient experience to participate.
So, in short, I’d say it’s only a problem if you think it is. It doesn’t require “management” unless it is spoiling your enjoyment of the game.
If it is spoiling your enjoyment of the game, ultimately you’ll probably need to decide on a character and see it through. Willpower being the key!
What I love about Centaurs is that little “double back” animation when you aggro them as they gallop past. Exactly what I would expect from a sentient creature having to co-ordinate four legs to change direction quickly. Brilliant.
Scale Waypoint charges with distance travelled rather than distance travelled and levels obtained and I’d be in favour of both a modest increase in cost and retaining the charge for dead characters.
We had that, it’s gonna make GW2 a solo game as no one dismounts to help others.

I don’t agree. I’d be just as inclined to dismount and help someone out as I am now.
If I simply zip to another area via a waypoint, however…
FWIW I have no strong feelings either way. If they’re introduced, great. If not, great. I just don’t agree with some of the arguments against.
I wouldn’t say you are doing anything wrong, but you may be missing out on “easy” XP awards. Crafting is the one you mention. Once you work out what you are doing with crafting, you can generate quite a lot of XP (I try to focus on crafting only when I have a crafting XP booster handy).
The game also rewards a lot of non-event, or non-combat activities with XP. Exploring in particular. If you have completed all the maps you have reached so far then this may not be an issue, but exploring the other starting areas also nets a lot of XP.
Don’t pass up a dynamic event and make sure you stick around for any follow ons. If you have time, try and complete your Daily Achievements – for me, this takes the grind out of simply walloping mobs and farming nodes as there is a bit of focus to it. And you’re rewarded in XP, coin, materials etc.
I am at roughly the same level than you on my main and I don’t think I’ve ever been more than a level below the content I was playing.
There are still names available. I made a character last night with a one word name (an actual last name) and I was certain they must all be used up by now.
There must also be millions of <first name> <surname> combinations available in a variety of languages.
Finally, the old Fantasy chestnut of <name> the <adjective> must still yield some reasonable character names.
What type of character are you creating? Maybe the contributors to this thread can give you some suggestions you might like!
Polearms could be good – halberds, naginata etc
Spears/Javelins (on land)
Other than that, I wouldn’t mind seeing some existing weapons opened up to other classes, with new abilities to match. For example, I like the idea that a Warrior could pick up pretty much anything and improvise with it to inflict some damage even though it isn’t necessarily appropriate to class (using a sceptre as a club or a staff as a quarterstaff rather than a ranged weapon). Might struggle to do this for all classes, I suppose…
Basically, I want my Warrior to dual wield knives please.
I am constantly rerolling my characters as it is. While I always welcome additional customisation options, I think it would be bad for me personally. Very, very bad.
Seriously, though, I envisage makeover packs in our futures.
Same here. Ten character slots, one human of each profession, one Sylvari and one Asura. Not one over level 20 and most have been rerolled due to my CC obsession. Most of my guildmates have stuck with one character or switched between two and many have reached level 80 and started to arrange guild outings to higher level content.
I am definitely going to concentrate on my Guardian Ranger Elementalist Warrior as of today.
Definitely.
Definitely would agree with a “Gold Seller” option. Have received several mails from different accounts, all of which have been reported as “Scamming”.
I wonder if GW2’s new and improved naming convention might be partly responsible. All GW1 names are two or more words whereas GW2 allows one word names.
One of the hot topics on our Guild message board was “what is the first thing you’ll do when GW2 launches?”. One of the most common responses was “create a character with a one word name before they’re all taken.”
If this was a common obsession on launch day, I suspect that a lot of GW1 players have simply not reused their names as they have 1 word names now.
For my part, I’ve retained the one GW1 character name I really wanted in GW2 and the rest can be used as far as I’m concerned. I expect GW1 players would appreciate another announcement with a deadline to give them one final chance.
I’ve racked up ten character slots, currently occupied by 8 humans (one for each profession), a charr and an asura. At the moment, most of them are doing little more than reserving their names, but I’ll get to it.
I don’t have a problem with starting with 5 slots at all. As has been said, you can only play with one at a time and most sane people do pretty much everything with that one before looking to create more.
Yeah, this is a bit of a pain – although the transmutation stones do mean you can move the skin between armour pieces as you go along. It would have been better value if the purchase gave access to a vendor similar to the chap in the Hall of Monuments so that you could go back and get new skins as and when you needed them, but there we are.
Hmm. Other than redying or restyling hair via a “Barbershop” vendor or, perhaps getting a tan from a “Sunbed” vendor, any other change would require some kind of magical intervention, I would have thought… =]
Seriously, though, there was an appearance change service in GW1, paid for with real money, and I imagine this will almost certainly be available in the gemstore sometime in the future.
This won’t be possible, I’m afraid.
If she gets her own account, she can remake the character there (plus at least four others!) and you get a slot back.
My laptop will also only run the game smoothly on lowest settings. Game Booster allowed me to switch most of the settings to Medium and it is running much more smoothly. Still can’t cope with High settings, but it’s a significant improvement.
I haven’t played Engineer further than “Defense of Shaemoor” so I can’t comment.
My Thief is still fairly low level, but I am slowly developing more of an interest.
My Warrior is third on the list of characters on whom I have lavished the most attention so far (behind Guardian and Elementalist). I love the versatility of all the different weapon combinations and the heavy armour is useful for a player like me who does not always learn from their mistakes…
I think my most enjoyable spell of play this week was escorting the brewer from the Monastery through the swamp with a Flintlock Rifle strapped to my back, with about half a dozen similarly equipped Warriors, pretending I was in Platoon or something.
I have accumulated a veritable butter… erm… mountain over the last few days.
I have no idea what to do with the stuff until I decide to “go chef”, something which is about 120 places below where my main currently is on her “to do” list.
My alts are all placeholders for names I couldn’t live without and aren’t getting much game time so they may well be potential chefs but while my main is getting all my attention we may never find out.
I haven’t even considered selling it at the moment as it seems to drop so frequently, I imagine the TP is awash with buttery goodness.
I hope it doesn’t go off in the bank…
I believe it’s in the game, but accessed via the bank rather than the gemstore. I haven’t tried yet, because I blew my gems on extra character slots.
I wouldn’t have a problem with Mounts being added to the game. Equally, I wouldn’t lose any sleep if they never materialised.
I envisage something that can attain speeds only marginally faster than character running speed, not affected by characters speed boosts and is prohibitively expensive for all but very seasoned characters. I would prefer it to be obtainable via in-game currency (whether coin or karma or a combination IDK). If anyone is worried about removing gold sinks, I think this may be a solution, rather than a problem.
Waypoints would be charging once each for mount and rider, naturally…
I don’t think this would discourage players from looking around. They may even be more inclined to do so, as it would be marginally less time consuming. As has been stated, the chances of a passing stranger reviving you or grouping to help out in a dynamic event depends entirely on the stranger, not their mode of transport. I stop to help out when passing through more often than not, but if I’m in a hurry, I could see me running past more often on foot than on a mount, just because game time is precious.
Also, I think mounts could be inherently skittish, and throw riders who try to detour around exciting situations like some dynamic events, requiring the event to be resolved before accepting a rider again. I think there are ways that mounts can be included without compromising the excellent community feel that has been created so far.
And the screenshots. Think of the screenshots...
It is pretty tough. On the upside, I think this was the quest that got me (as a Warrior) using weapon switches, dodging, keeping mobile and using the environment for tactical advantage, rather than simply standing there and whacking stuff until I was the only thing standing.
Not tried it as a thief, but the advice above seems pretty sound.
I have a character who has not yet completed the Human opening quest “Defense of Shaemoor”. If I need materials, I switch to that character, kill lots of (endlessly spawning) centaurs which drop consumable bags and hooves and little else. When opened these bags produce materials which can be deposited into the bank.
