right but Remember I am at level 2 and hearts are level 3 and up.

That’s fine trust me. Visit the first heart and do a few of the tasks you will see. The only way you will get past level 2 really is to do the first heart. I’m not sure what map you are on but for example if you are human the first heart is a farm. You water some plants, feed some cows and fight a few worms nop problem. At level 2 these missions are developed to get you started and learn how to play.

The worst that happens is you die and go right back and finish where you left off. The heart missions don’t reset if you die or go some place else.

You really are not going to level up past 2 if you don’t start doing a few of these things. You could explore for XP as well but I don’t think you will get far at level 2.

Hi. I just started last week. In my opinion the hearts are the best place to start since the first hearts are meant for newbie as far as I can tell. You should level to 3 and 4 in no time doing the hearts and with little problem. The mobs are not hard and some of the tasks do not include fighting, like watering plants and such.

Plus when you do the hearts you get karma points to buy items from the person you helped that will boost your character. You will also get some money completing hearts so make sure you check mail and take the cash in the mail. I didn’t even know that when I started and had all this money in my mail. LOL

Of course you could also grind low level mobs right in the newbie area to open up all your weapon 2-5 skills.

Exploring can “make you strong” so to speak because you gain experience which will help you level, which in turn boosts your attributes. However at level 2 if you start wandering toward some of those vistas you are probably going to run across some mobs that will be hard to handle at level 2.

I’ve only been playing for a week but have finally decided on a character I’m going to play most of the time (Guardian currently L15). I’d like to join a smaller sized guild. I don’t really do PvP but will dabble in WvW if I can figure out how not to get killed right away

I solo a lot but would like to join other guild members in events, help others when I can, and explore together. I prefer a certain level of maturity in fellow guild members. Given my experience in other MMOs I’m very active in guild events and like to participate. I generally like to help lower level guild members when I can. Mostly I just want to join a guild to make the game more fun and to have things to do with other members when I don’t feel like running around the map on my own.

I know I probably sound picky and not the prime guild candidate because I don’t like PvP but as stated I would like to meet others in the game to make it more social. I’ve never tried a full RP guild but might be interested if I could get more information regarding the rules.

I’m Eastern time zone U.S. I am in game on and off through the day, but not usually late night. I usually will be in game 4-5 hours a day, more so late morning and afternoon. I make my own work hours so I will normally be available for any scheduled guild events.

Newbie Q:2 Guardian what to expect?

Thanks all for your detailed answers to my questions. I went ahead and rerolled a new guardian. The first one I didn’t like the name because I just threw it together to test it.

I played quite a bit yesterday and leveled him up to 12 rather quickly. I am defiantly seeing the durability with guardian as I only died twice in about 8 hours of play time. The first time I fell of a cliff trying to mine some ore and landed in the middle of some bears. Haha The second time I was in some cave with another person and he pulled a bunch of mobs and then ran off and left me there. That wasn’t very cool.

The great sword seems to be my best friend. Whirling Wrath is like a mob blender. The only issue I have is fighting ranged mobs like centaurs with bows. It seems like after I clean up the melee mobs I’m running around in circles chasing them. I could switch to a ranged weapon set I suppose but I’m a little too slow on the keys to do so.

I am not sure about the virtue skills though. I notice when I activate them the icons stay on the right. Does that mean they are boons and will work as long as they are there? It seems odd because even when I die I don’t have to reactivate them. For example it says Virtue of Courage is good for like 9 hours. Or am I missing something I should be doing?

As far as not much health I have mixed armor, weapons and upgrades with about a 50/50 split between vitality and toughness so I think that might work fairly well. Any other combinations you might suggest to keep survivability high and damage maxed are appreciated.

I am getting much better with strafing and dodging. I ran circles around some slow earth elemental boss, I think it was, and I don’t think it hit me once. I have found setting my primary attack to the ‘shift’ key works fairly well because it is right there for my pinky finger to hit incase auto attack drops for some reason.

As mentioned by others I see pretty good results by going into a battle in this order hit first with Binding Blade, jump into the mix with Leap of Faith, mash Symbol of Wrath, and then Whirling Wrath to clean up the left overs. For example I have jumped into a pack of 3 wolves all a level above me using this sequence and they are all usually dead by the end of Whirling Wrath.

As far as crafting I recant my original assessment. I didn’t realize you could send crafting items directly to the collections in the bank without having to go to the bank so I was just dropping them when my bags got full. Once I figured that out I found that leather working works well because it seems those crafting items drop regularly. So I spent maybe 10 minutes crafting and jumped almost half a level. Then I sold the items at the TP using the instant sell for some decent money.

So anyway, that is how I have been running my new build. Thanks again for all the info and I have been trying to use all of your suggestions. If I am missing something obvious please let me know. I’ve been having a lot of fun with this because I’ve always played ranged characters on other MMOs and this is the first time I’ve had an lucky playing a mele character.

I have been amazed at the size of the map in Queensland. It seems just when I think I have found everything more stuff pops up on my map. I think I am about 80% done at this point.

First, thanks all for the tips on mele combat. I spent a few hours practicing and think I’ve gotten okay at it. Since I have only been playing about a week I have tested every class with every race and just about every weapon set I could. I’ve been holding off taking a character past L11 to make sure I want to put the time into the character.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to go with a human guardian with great sword primary weapon set. I like the damage it deals relativity quickly and it seems I can survive/get away easier if I get caught in a mess and can’t tell what’s going on. Given that I have some questions because I don’t really know much about the game once you start earning traits. I’ve pretty much just been running heart quests, joining dynamic quests when I see them, and I dabbled in crafting a bit. So here are a few questions based on how I plan to play/ style of play I prefer.

I am a bit of a loner and like to solo a lot. Will this work out past early levels given my great sword weapon set?

I don’t do PvP because I’m too slow and always get torn up by some person running circles around me slicing me up haha. However I would like to try WvW. Do guardians have to be able to fly around in circles while pressing every attack key without having to look which ones they are pressing?

What do I have to look forward to playing a guardian as opposed to other classes?

What will I probably dislike playing a guardian past L10?

What should I certainly start doing right away with my guardian aside from just running around killing stuff?

What should I focus my weapon and armor upgrades on (I didn’t even know they existed until today lol)?

Also my early impression is that crafting is kind of more work than it is worth. It seems I can find just about any item I want in the trade store at a good price. Is there more to it later that makes it worth doing?

So basically, I want to be able to solo a fair amount, mele combat with ability to egress fairly well when I get into trouble, be able to contribute to a group when needed, and have half a chance to survive in WvW without my head spinning.

Any other cool guardian info anyone want’s to share would be appreciated.

Thanks all for the great suggestions. I was starting to think I should have just stuck with Ultima Online haha. You all gave me loads of good tips. I think part of my problem with mele is that I get too excited and just want to jump into the thick of things without having a real plan and not planning combo sequences. Then I get totally disoriented, start mashing number keys without any idea which ones I’m pressing.

I’ve never practiced with strafing and didn’t really think to work on changing key binds. I going to set those up and spend some time in a low level area getting some practice.

One thing I have found great about GW2 so far is that people actually play together and are helpful as opposed to other MMOs. In many games people seem to almost be paranoid of each other, fighting over resources, and basically unwilling to give advice.

I grew up playing Dungeons and Dragons before there were home computers so I’m dating myself a bit. Anyway I’ve always been into playing these types of games and since MMOs came about I have tried most of them but always run into the same problem.

I am terrible at close combat in groups. I do fine solo when I’m battling just a few mobs but throw in 4 or more and I get lost. Or in group battles I get lost, turned around and so forth. Given this, in just about any game I always end up gravitating towards ranged attack builds. This gets a bit old as I would like to get into playing close combat.

Since I’m new to GW2 here is an example. During the task to escort that pack mule to another village minoturs charge in group. I’m trying to play a guardian with a great sword. I end up just jumping into the middle of the mobs, mashing a bunch of buttons because I can’t tell what is going on, and run out when health gets low. I understand that jumping into the middle is the point and that is my goal. However if mobs start running around or there is a big crowd I get totally lost and end up staring at the side of a pack mule, haha.

I’ve tried changing the zoom to different settings and I still just end up mashing keys while turning in circles. I know the obvious answer is to give up because I’m too old get it or to stick to ranged attacks. However, I would like to try some other builds aside from ranged and, if after laughing at me, anyone might have so tips that would help me avoid “jump, 2, freak, f3,g,3,f14,spacebar,f2,5,j,spin in circles, 2,heal,l,f2run,jump,2…etc” I would appreciate it.

So far I like GW2, only on day 4 of playing, I just want to get away from ranged weapons.
