How GW2 is NOT casual.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

JustTrogdor.7892

tl/dr:Once again, casual is highly subjective and arguments that casual players will fall behind can be somewhat true, but if someone feels they don’t want to fall behind then they can play less casually. As for me, a casual player, I’m not concerned with PvP, WvWvW, dungeons and fractals at this time. I feel that there is plenty for me to do right now. At some point, in the distant future I may have played enough to have gear and stats to participate in those events. However, since I have chosen to play casually I am not in a hurry to get to end game level. Part of this has to do with limited expendable time and the fact that I need and like breaks from playing games. With my expendable time I like doing other things as well. That doesn’t mean that people that spend more time playing are doing anything wrong, they have simply chosen to use their expendable time to play more aggressively.

I think this post got derailed from the OPs opinion. I can see the point where players would like other fun or interesting non-combat/grind activities. At this time I don’t feel the need to do things like fishing but I can see where players that have been playing for a long time might enjoy such things. With a little creativity and a good guild/friendly players it can make for some interesting activities as well. For example my guild played ‘darts’ the other day. The guild leader jumped off a high point and died. The rest had to jump and try to land as close to him as possible. There are lots of possibilities outside of what has been developed for the game to spend some ‘casual’ time. Again that doesn’t mean more things shouldn’t be developed it just means there are other, yet limited, means to do casual things. Underwear races to distant map points and so forth. Level 2 escort missions can be fun. We used to do lobwie races a lot in WoW.

But here is the ‘definition’ of casual from Merriam-Webster dictionary and as you can see, while still subjective to some degree it covers many of the ideas on casual that people have mentioned here:

1: subject to, resulting from, or occurring by chance <a casual meeting>
2
a : occurring without regularity : occasional</b> <casual employment>
b : employed for irregular periods <a casual worker>
c : met with on occasion and known only superficially <a casual friend>
3
a (1) : feeling or showing little concern : nonchalant <a casual approach to cooking> (2) :lacking a high degree of interest or devotion <casual sports fans> <casual readers> (3) : done without serious intent or commitment
b (1) : informal, natural <a casual conversation> (2) : designed for informal use <casual clothing>

As you can see even by definition the term is subjective. I know that some might be triggered by ‘feeling or showing little concern’ when they read the definition. While most have a standard idea what concern means, it is not truly measurable as it is a state of mind and other’s opinions based on their ideas of what concern means. Concern can’t be objectively measured by time, weight, height/width, distance, volume and so forth.

Regarding concern, I would say that to some degree I have a lack of it for certain aspects of the game. While one goal is to eventually have cooler armor/weapons, be able to contribute in WvW from time to time I am in no hurry, hence I have a lack of concern for those things. That doesn’t mean I don’t take the limited time I do play seriously. I do have concern for my personal goals at this time, which will change as I accomplish more things, and when I play I pursue them. I do have one aspect of the game I have a high level of concern for an that is enjoying the game when I play. So far I feel I’m doing a very good job with that.

Simply put, enjoy the game the way you like to and don’t worry how others like to enjoy the game. Just like when we were kids on the playground, you don’t have to play with me and I don’t have to play with you.

the language filter is on by default, so being a newbie is not an excuse.

Why would it be an excuse anyway. The OP is the one cursing. The ones affected are the ones with it off. So people that break ToS are the ones cursing. The people with it off don’t need an excuse as they are the ones affected by the cursing. Yes my example of the people that might have it off was incorrect but the point is still the same. OP should not curse because some people have language filter off because cursing in game is still a ToS. Reading cursing is not.

Anyway I gave the guy the URL to support in my first reply. If he thinks he was suspended for no reason he should use the support system. They will mostly likely address any questions he has about in game language as well.

The language filter is not meant to provide a license to curse. It is meant to limit the cursing and other banned words the filter user sees when someone breaks ToS and curses. Many players don’t have it on because they don’t know about it i.e. newbies. Due to this you will still get reported. Additionally there are probably a lot of people with it off just because they want to report people. Also the GMs pop in time to time as well.

In game cursing is a violation of ToS no matter what. Simple solution don’t curse in chat..

I didn’t even know about the daily until about 9-10 days after I started playing. All of a sudden this chest popped. I must have done them all by accident

I like the daily because I often don’t play for a few days at a time. A weekly would make me feel obligated to play more to achieve it.

The New Guy - What I Like About GW2 So Far

-All the different weapon sets and various combinations are fun to mess around with. If I get burned out with a certain set when things seem repetitive and too easy for not much more coin I can set up a different rig and play with that for a while. I’m running a p/p/sb Thief right now, probably the worst rig for a thief aside from naked or offhand only. I am having fun with it though because I enjoy the challenge and the visuals from run and gun.

-It took me a while to get into crafting but I like that I can switch around to suit my needs and go right back to where I left off if I switch back. I like the easy XP from it but other than that I don’t care for the lack of value of the crafted item. At least at my level so far.

-The vistas have been fun so far since many of them are a bit tricky, at least for me, to get to. My memory somewhat sucks so even when I roll an alt the vistas I already with my main are another challenge lol. With that I just ran across the high dive in Lions Arch today and that was a cool little surprise. It would be cool if you could do different trick dives maybe for a one time per trick XP bonus.

-I understand the map group event boses, or whatever they are called, getting a bit boring but it is nice to hit one with a group for a nice bit of loot. Although today all I got was Mystic Toilet fodder, but hey messing around with that is interesting at times.

-Being able to go to the other races maps easily is very helpful to me. No huge travel time and I can switch around to work other map goals, different mob and so forth when I need a change.

I should mention that my first MMO experience was Ultima Online many, many years ago when dial-up was the norm, so I’m probably easy to impress. The only other MMOs I spent a dedicated amount of time with were the original Anarchy Online and WoW. I spent years with WoW from launch. I like GW2 much better so far.

Well I’ll stop here from now. I just wanted to add something positive and I know most of you already know about this stuff. By the time and expansion comes out I will probably be no where close to world completion and level cap. I have only sniffed WvW so that is a whole new world for me to explore when I’m ready for a big change of pace.

So yeah, even if I quit right now I feel I got my 106 hours of entertainment and I have enjoyed it. I’m sure I’ll have many for so the price per hour will be nearly nothing in no time. I understand most here have been playing since around beta so I can understand being bored. I hope the devs add new content for you soon and for me a very long way down the road.

The New Guy - What I Like About GW2 So Far

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: JustTrogdor.7892

JustTrogdor.7892

tl/dr: I have been playing GW2 for a bit over 4 weeks so far. To take a break from some of the negative I thought I would post what I like. Keep in mind that according to what many have said here, I personify casual player with exception of the ‘casuals don’t care and don’t pursue goals’ label. I’m not posting to start a debate so please refrain from that however like always, opinions are welcomed.

-I already feel like I have gotten what I paid for. I have played a total of 106 hours as of this post. I don’t know many other sources of entertainment where I can get 106 hours at the cost of $60. If I went to 53 2 hour movies it would cost a lot more. So the investment of money into entertainment time will only get better as I play more, even picking up some gems from time to time.

-Even though I have to run on low graphics I still like the artwork very much. I’ll be upgrading soon so I bet I will like it even more then.

-I love the combat mechanics even though I’m still not very good at them. I think it’s cool that it involves more than just pushing attack keys. The more I learn when to dodge and in what direction the more fun I have.

-Not having to fight of resource nodes and XP is great. I never liked in other games where I was trying to clear mobs to approach a node and some other player lets me take agro and runs by to tap the node.

-The community as a whole is a lot better than experiences I’ve had in other games. If I ask a question in /map I’ll get the answer 5x over without having to read “LoL Newbs!” A lot of time if I ask a question about an area someone will offer to waypoint near me and show me where to go and help me in combat if I need.

-Along that line and this goes with the XP thing, if I’m in a bind players will run up and bail me out. This has happened more times than I can count. I try to do the same when I have the opportunity.

-The travel mechanics make it much easier on me. I don’t have to freak out if I get wasted because usually the trip back to where I was is short thanks to waypoints. Also I don’t have to worry about racing back to my body or losing loot from dying.

-While I have found the dailys are a bit repetitive they give me a nice goal to get me started for the day or in the evening if I’m tired of doing harder things. I’m almost done with my monthly without even really paying attention to it. That gives me a few more things to do with no rush to do it.

-I like all the map location goals. It gives me a reason to go to places on the map that I normally would not visit.

Yea the cave in the north was where I was having problems. I’d clear the ones outside the entrance then inch in and try to pull one from a ranged shot and I’d get 3-4 adds. If I tried to kite them the ones outside would respawn right right behind me almost every time and I had to bug out. I finally just waited until I leveled up enough to were I needed to update my armor and weapons. Then I cleared the entrance and ran in commando guns blazing. With enough dodging I was able to get it done. Well, after the first try

I think that will depend on how often and how long you play. Someone that plays 1 hour a day will use much less than someone that plays 6 hours a day. I’m not capped so I can’t give you an estimate. If your service provides cycle stats maybe play for an hour to get a ballpark estimate.

Do you mean appearance or stats? I’m running a p/p/sb thief right now and it’s pretty horrible but fun for me. I have a good time dropping an AOE chocking gas and then running in pistols with unload. I’m still low but so far I’m putting traits into crits and Trickery for the caltrops on evade. I call it my Matrix build because the strafing and dodge then unload reminds me of the movie.

So it pretty much excludes the main benefits of a thief. I just have fun with it and I’m not expecting to get any party invites anytime soon

I bought one after I had some gems left over from an earlier purchase and bought more to get an armor skin. Unfortunately I /facepalmed myself and got the wrong skin LOL. So I just picked up the pickaxe for connivence because I didn’t like the skin that actually worked with my armor. Even if it isn’t such a big deal to carry extra regular it just saves me from one more thing I have to check before I head out into the world. I’d buy an axe and harvesting sickle as well if they had it.

Being new there are a few spots in Queensland that I usually map grind my new alts. It seems whenever I come across a group of bandits I wipe out several of them and back peddle to recharge and there are suddenly three more or so from an area I just cleared. It seems like they respond like every 20 seconds.

Is there a decent tactic to deal with this PvE solo or do I just need to give in and dial up some guild members?

german band stealing artwork as album cover

in Community Creations

Posted by: JustTrogdor.7892

JustTrogdor.7892

Not the band’s fault; it’s the graphic designers. They paid him to make an album cover, he right-clack saves an image off the wiki, adds their logo, gives it back, “DIS IS NEW ALBUM”.

But yes, this is illegal of the designer to do so. Unless the album is strictly “1 copy for the lead singer, and he’ll never use it for commercial purposes”.

If a band hires an artist to make their cover and the artist uses copyright material to make the cover the band can still be liable. It is the responsibility of the end user to ensure that any material they use does not violate copyright law.

If I hire a band to make a CD and they use a bunch of copyrighted songs and then I sell the CD, even if I didn’t know they were copyrighted, I am at fault and will get in hot water fast.

However, the end user would most likely have some grounds to take legal action against the designer for damages caused. It would be the responsibility of the end user to prove that they didn’t know the artwork was copyrighted. That in itself would prove tricky because “I didn’t know” can be hard to prove.

So basically it would work out in this order, band/producer gets in trouble, band removes the images and pays any fines etc. for using copyright material, band then sues designer for damages. Copyright law is more strict than ever due to millions of Internet violations. It is rare that the “I didn’t know” excuse gets some one very far.

It is the same reason that someone can get in legal trouble for owning stolen items.

Worst build but most fun?

in Thief

Posted by: JustTrogdor.7892

JustTrogdor.7892

I like the p/p/sb because the p/p unload looks cool when strafing or dodging back and then unloading. The sb I like to drop a choke gas bomb then weapon swap and kite and strafe with a dodge mixed in for ranged foes. I swap back to sb if I need a quick escape using infiltrator’s arrow. Heck a lot of the time if I am just running to a location I use the shadowstep just to hop along the road.

Keep in mind as a casual player I know I’m simply choosing this build because it looks cool to me for the most part. I don’t expect any party requests any time soon.

Worst build but most fun?

in Thief

JustTrogdor.7892

:)

My build is s/p p/p 0/20/0/30/20. I have plenty of initiative gain and caltrop dodge just in case I am about to get overwhelmed in which case i dodge through the AI zerg a few times and rip reduce their numbers with Unload. The ini gain is to allow me to chain Pistol Whip almost infinitely combined with signet of malice for near constant healing.

I balanced my stats ~1700 across the board. Not exactly the worst but pretty effective in PvE if you know what you are doing.

I was thinking about the same thing 0/20/0/30/20 as well. I have yet to get close enough in level to go fully that way yet so I’ll probably hit up Critical Strikes for pistol mastery and Trickery for the caltrops on dodge first. That sounds fun.

I realize that my Matrix build (I know that probably means something with engineers or a focus weapon) takes away all the advantage of stealth but I have not been playing long enough to figure that out anyway. I just know I’ve been reading debates about it.

I just bought my first armor skin kit from the gem shop today. I bought $10 worth of gems just to get it and bought the wrong one. I didn’t bother to read and just picked the one I thought looked coolest. Well turns out it was for light armor and I use all medium. HAHA

Good thing I don’t take this game too seriously so could laugh at myself, and I suppose I still have 200 gems I could spend on something.

I guess I’ll have to roll a light armor profession when I need a break from my other ones. I wish I could have just gifted it to someone on my guild because I may never use it.

I agree though I found the ones you can buy in the gem store, at least the ones I could find were kind of boring and I think I saw, what, maybe 3 weapon skins, only one of which I use.

If I missed something because I didn’t look in the right place or don’t know where else to go to find skins a heads up would be nice.

Welcome to the community. I’m fairly new myself and I found this thread a life saver:

There was all sorts of stuff I didn’t know I could do like freeing up bag space by sending all my mats to the bank with one click and not actually having to go there.

I would suggest you try a profession you are interested in and do the human starter area in Queensland. I suggest this because I find that starting area easiest to navigate which helps just trying to find your way around.

Strafing and dodging are a big part of the combat dynamics so practice up with that. A quick dodge can mean the difference between having to run to heal and staying to fight, or not dodging a times can translate to death pretty fast, not the enemy but yours

If you have any specific questions send me a PM as I’m glad to help since so many others helped as well.

Let me preface this by saying I’m a very casual player and stick with PvE for now. I’m also what most would call a ‘newbie’; only playing about 3 weeks. I just rolled a thief I decided I would actually play.

Anyway, since I still hang out in what most people would call the ‘noob’ area I have found that a lot of it is rather easy. I’m not complaining but I thought I would use a build that most would consider a bad idea to make a challenge.

I took on pp/sb which I nickname my Matrix build because it looks pretty cool to drop in a AOE and the charge in pistols blazing while strafing and dodging. So I have found it rather fun. Have I picked the absolute worst thief build or are there more that might be fun in PvE as well?

Learning to fight others better

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: JustTrogdor.7892

JustTrogdor.7892

Have you studied all your skills carefully and practiced what the different combinations do? One thing I have found is that you need to not only be really go with your offense but you need to know defense skills and boons. I never paid much attention to defense in other games aside from stacking my armor. While I only play PvE mostly I have learned that offense is only about 3/4 of the game on an easy day.

Knowing when to dodge is huge. Knowing when to bug out so your cool downs wear off helps me a lot when I’m struggling. There is no shame about running around out of site when you need to.

Also keep in mind that a lot of the good PvPers have learned the skills of their opponent inside and out so know what to expect. It might be a good idea to try to be less predictable. If you are constantly getting beat up by a certain profession you don’t play much try rolling that prof to see the particular advantages they have.

Or you could be just like me. I’m nothing but free points for my opponent in PvP so I just don’t do it much.

So, practice is probably your best bet. Those hardcore PvPers have logged a ton of hours and every hour is pretty much practice. Professional baseball players still need to practice. I doubt the people you are losing to have been playing for only half a day.

It’s too bad there is no real sparing set up. However there are groups that do it in WvW on an isolated part of the map. Search around and maybe you can get in on that. From what I have read most others leave them to do their thing.

Why Town Clothes can only be worn in town?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: JustTrogdor.7892

JustTrogdor.7892

I think allowing people to wear full town clothes “over” armor would make the game look too cartoonish. That’s just my personal opinion though. If the game goes that route then people would also want to fight in their underwear with all their armor hidden. When I jump into combat I prefer to see people that look like they are geared up for combat. Instead everyone would be running around in shirts with rabbit ears. There are a few smaller items I think might be okay like sunglasses since they don’t detract from the overall combat appearance as you can hide your head gear anyway.

That’s a pretty silly argument. In LotRO and EQ2 you can wear whatever the hell you want while in combat. It doesn’t matter what level, class, etc you are. You can wear a dress, a top hat, full armor as a caster, whatever. There has been no problems with it whatsoever.

How can my opinion stating I think it would look cartoonish be a silly argument since I wasn’t arguing? That is just what I think. Did you not read," that is just my opinion though"? By the way your thinking just because other games do it GW2 should too is silly. By that rational GW2 should charge a monthly subscription because after all other games do it and according to the people that play subscription MMOs it must not be a problem. This is out there and no one will recommend this but I just launched a new thief and I’m running pp/sb. If you are not used to the combat mechanics it is a great way to learn strafing, dodging, and kiting real fast lol.

I mostly do PvE so I wanted to try it for an extra challenge in some of the lower level areas. I’m having a lot of fun but taking multiple agros can get you in a lot of trouble fast. That’s where dodging come in.

It’s a dodge or die build but it is pretty fun charging a mob letting the duel wield fire away. AOE with bow for poison and bleed, swap to pistols, charge to get in range and let the pistols rip. At that point is when dodging and strafing comes in. The only thing is it is hard to make good use of the steal skill unless an emergency because in my mind the idea is to stay away from melee range. Good fun for me but that’s just me probably.

So I rolled my first toon, a thief and jumped in the game and what do I see? This cool F1 skill called “steal”. So what was the first thing I did? I started running up to NPCs mashing the F1 key. Needless to say I was briefly confused when nothing happened and thought to myself, “Well that skill is worthless.” LOL

My other mistake was throwing out a ton of mats. My 2 little bags kept getting filled up so I would just toss them if I needed the slot for something else. I didn’t know you could send them all to your bank with one click. Also I thought at such a low level I would not be able to access crafting for awhile anyway. So I tossed them.

When I completed a heart and went to see the heart vendor I thought I was obligated to spend the karma on something. I thought it was like a one time reward where you got to choose what you wanted from the list but after that it was gone.

Let’s see… I’m not really into WvW or PvP but I was eager to see how it looked and jumped my at that point level 10 in because I had read that WvW was available for all levels and everyone is up-leveled to 80. After I finally figured out how to get around and got a general idea of where I was suppose to go I figured out that WvW is not the best place for low levels. Actually I found out about 2 seconds after seeing my first enemy Haha.

Mostly I thought the thief story was pretty funny and I’m willing to wager I wasn’t the only one that thought that was how it worked, especially for people that played Ultima Online many moons ago like myself.

So if you feel like taking a break from the constant debating, which I admit I take part in a lot myself, share one of your funny stories from your ‘noob’ days.

Guard is low 40s and Greatsword face stomping fun. Being hard to kill creates overconfidence and, well, maybe that Vet and 4 mobs 5 levels higher wasn’t such a good group to attack.. Basically Guard will make you say, “Hey, watch this!” too often. But as a Guard sometimes you actually pull off some stupid stuff.

LOL so true. My main is a Guardian only level 26 because according to a thread in the other forum I’m a low life casual player waisting my time LOL.

Anyway I have been playing him for a little over a week PvE only and 9/10 times when I have died, which has not been often, I went flying into a bees nest with Leap of Faith, Symbol of Wrath, Whirling Wrath. That’s gotten me a few time in group events too trying to look cool with Whirling Wrath, I call it my mob blender. Most time 3 mobs same level or 1 or two higher you can pull it off. Getting too bold and you are paying for a waypoint if no one else is around

Perhaps I am also “misuing” the term casual, but I wouldn’t call myself a casual player… I typically can only play a couple of hours on the weekend, and I have no level 80 characters yet despite getting the game at release, but I definitely do have in-game goals and I get pretty into the game content (rp, buying gems, etc.). I don’t play very often, due to time constraints as a college student, but I wouldn’t call myself a casual player. As others have said, I don’t think time equates whether a player is casual or not.

Niether do the goals of a player factor into the casual label. I loved the quote where it was suggested that casual players who’s goals don’t include maxing their gear and completing all the accomplishments are wasting their time on MMO and should play an RPG instead. LOL

I think I see something in this thread that may have something to do with the other thread where players were angry about getting in parties with less experienced players. What I think is being hinted at is something along the lines of casual players are not as good, not maxed out etc. and therefore have no business playing with those who’s goals are to max out the game and have all the coolest stuff. They should just say I don’t want you in my game because I am better than the casual player and my objectives are better and more important.

Bottom line, let people play the way they want and don’t worry about a label. Don’t worry about how they play and what constitutes waisting their time. Trust me, you don’t want to get me started on the other end of the spectrum.

It’s a ridiculous extra fee whose only reason for being is profit.

Yeah heaven forbid a company try to make a profit. They should just make the game, sell it until they have recovered the cost it took to make the game and then just give it out for free to everyone else to make sure they don’t profit from it. What company in their right mind would ever want a profit?

Welcome to the GW2 community!

I’m 3 weeks in so I can only share my experience so far. I don’t care for the ranger because they seem soft and I found the pet to often be more of a liability than a positive. I have read in the other forum that many players don’t like to roll with rangers.

The good thing about GW2 is professions all have some form of range attack depending on the weapon set you are using. However some are better than others for obvious reasons.

You may like mesmer because there is some rangability and the illusions act someone like temporary pets.

As for the opening zones I find their difficulty to be about the same with the exception of navigation difficulty that you pointed out. I took my human to the Asura map and had a hard time finding things, especially getting to some of the vistas and a few POIs that have kind of a trick to get to. One you have to find a tunnel on the opposite end of the map to get to the other one. If you don’t know this beforehand and are stupid like me you will be running around the map forever lol.

I hope you enjoy the game!

So basically in a nutshell I am saying:

1. That the “casual” term is misused – at least in GW2.
2. True casual players (and even some more hardcore) will never reach their in game goals of gear/achievements – even after years of playing (without using gems or getting lucky drops).
3. Perhaps it is time we stop pretending that this game is for casuals.

Sorry for the rant. I feel better now.

1. You are 100 % right. People use “casual” as excuse for “noob”
2. A true “casual” player(by your definition) should not play MMO at all, it’s waste of time.(Normal RPG will be much better for them).
3. Since GW2 is a traditional setup MMO, it never truly for casual player.

Thanks for educating me on that. I had no idea the fun I have had in this game has been a waste of time. I never realized that my game goals were supposed to be the best gear and all the achievements. I’m so glad that has been cleared up for me because I didn’t realize the fun I was having exploring, meeting other players in game and other less than elite things I was doing were a waste of time. I’m banning myself from MMOs forever and wiping GW2 off my computer so I won’t be tempted to have fun in a MMO that doesn’t include the goals of other players.

Or maybe you should start studying, and not try to run games when they don’t allowed it. I’ve known several people banned from the campus because they tried stuff like that.
(Or maybe they weren’t just gaming online…)
But i can’t imagine that Arenanet will ban you for that. As long as you activate the ip, there should be no problems.

Give me a break. Maybe OP is wanting to play during lunch or after studying. I’m sure the OP is very aware of his campus policy on using the network to game. I’m sure you are not.

playing one hour a day sounds pretty casual to me. You go back home, spend some time with your wife and kids, think “oh I have an hour free, maybe I’ll log in on guild wars and do a few quick pvp matches”. One pvp match is about 20 minutes. IF you just log in to do 2 or 3 of them from time to time you’re playing casually. One CoF run is 6 minutes. If a person logs in and thinks “hey, I’ll run one path of CoF with my friends and maybe I’ll chat a bit” and spends 10 minutes in game every day you can hardly call that not casual. The same with dailies, it will take you about 20 minutes to do. If you log in to do that daily I don’t see nothing not casual about it. The only problem is when you start thinking that you HAVE to log in. You don’t.

Like I said before the term is subjective and it seems like you understand that based on the opinion you shared. The issue is when people try to say this game isn’t for casual players or saying that they don’t pursue goals in the game.

In MY Opinion this game is great for the casual player as well as the more dedicated player. I label myself casual. I have goals although one day they might be to log in for 10 minutes and craft then log out. I don’t think it is appropriate to for other people to start deciding who the game is for, what their goals should be, and how intensely they should pursue those goals.

Statments like this seem elitest to me:

2. True casual players (and even some more hardcore) will never reach their in game goals of gear/achievements – even after years of playing (without using gems or getting lucky drops).
3. Perhaps it is time we stop pretending that this game is for casuals.

Yes I will never reach my goals because I’m a self labeled casual.. I’ll never play just to have fun, I’ll never finish daily when I want to, I’ll never meet people in game I enjoy doing things with, I’ll never craft a few items and sell them and so on.

I will probably never make 80. I played WoW for years and never came close to the cap.
However my goal is to enjoy the game the way I see fit and GW2 does a great job of accommodating that. So in my opinion the game is for casuals and people should not determine what my goals should be.

Casual gamers can spend 8 hours a day playing a game. It’s what they do in the game that makes them casual. Playing the game on the easiest setting and never failing at any obstacle is a pretty good example.

Well that is subjective too and your opinion which you have every right to believe. Under that rational people that don’t play PvP and WvW are casual because it is difficult and the likely hood of failing is high.

I don’t even know why we feel the need to start labeling people as casual, regular or hardcore based on their style of game play anyway. Let me decide if I am a casual player or not. The only reason I can see that people want to call people casual because they don’t have the same goals or don’t play at a more difficult level is elitism. There is no need to label game play styles.

I call myself casual because I limit my play time more than a lot of people in the game. I don’t try to call someone else hardcore because they play 6 hours a day and do harder tasks.

I like being casual, in my opinion of the term, because I don’t always have to play the hardest content to the point that I’m getting frustrated and banging my head against the monitor. When my frustration grows I just log and and go for a walk or spend time with my girlfriend. I like the later best.

Not this again.. Everyone grab your pitch forks and torches for the “Ban him!” shout.

Having an account compromised is a completely different situation that taking someone into your guild and giving him the key to the vault.

Sure allowing limited withdrawals would minimize the damages. However the underlying problem is letting someone into your guild and giving them the keys to the bank.

If say you took someone in to the guild and your limit was 5 withdrawals a day and they took the 5 most valuable items in there that they didn’t need and sold them people would still be shouting Ban or that’s not fair. The only way to eliminate that same problem, although on a lower scale, would be to have trusted guild members that could divvy out the goods on an as needed basis.

Having an account compromised is a completely different situation than allowing someone to use your bank without restrictions.

Casual is highly subjective. Some people that normally play 5 hours everyday might see casual as 1 – 2 hours a day. Some people that consider themselves casual gamers might feel someone that plays everyday more than two hours is somewhat hardcore.

How can you judge casual players by saying this?

Yep I worded that badly. Everyone has goals. But casuals don’t take their goals as seriously. They’re not as attached to their goals.

I am a very casual player, maybe 3 -4 days a week for a few hours at a time. However when I do play I take my personal goals for the game seriously. As a casual player my goals may be different but I still pursue them. From the get go my goal wasn’t to race to level cap as fast as I can.

My goal was to enjoy the game, do quests, craft, and interact with other players via guilds and such. When I play those few hours in a day I do my best to pursue those goals. I like the fact that I can log out for several days or even a week or more, come back and still pursue my goals. So saying that a casual player doesn’t take their goals seriously is just silly.

Not every person in GW2 has the goal of getting to 80 as fast as they can, run every fractal, complete their monthly as fast as they can, get the best armor as fast as they can, make 200 gold as fast as they can and dominate WvW.

Personally I couldn’t care less about WvW, being level 80, having more gold than I can spend. That doesn’t mean I’m not serious about my goals in the game because they are different that yours.

So subjectively, I consider myself a casual player. You may not and that is your prerogative but don’t judge a persons game goals and how seriously they take it based on how much they play.

I ended up going through asura gates (it was marked by that green swirl mark, don’t know why)

I’m color blind and thought it was blue lol. I am pretty sure it is marked to make it easier to find.

Being color blind I wish they would mark the POEs with say a small yellow star. Sometime it takes me forever to find the last one I need for map completion if it is in the middle of some trees on a map.

new password rules

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: JustTrogdor.7892

JustTrogdor.7892

I strongly suggest using a password that incorporates at least 1 lowercase letter, at least 1 upper case letter, at least one special character like @ or %, and at least 8 letters. Password with common words, less characters and such get hacked all the time. You would be surprised how fast hackers can run programs that zip through every letter combination you can think of in very little time.

Many sites that allow you to access to your finances, personal information such as social security number now require complex character combinations. Also using the same password for multiple accounts is a bad idea as well. Say you use the same password for your email that you use for your game. Your email gets hacked and the hacker finds that you have a GW2 account due to an email you have saved from GW2. If they want to hack your GW2 account the first thing they are going to do is try the same password that is used for you email.

Another example would be if you used the same password for you GW2 account as you use for Paypal. The hacker gets into your GW2 account and then tries the Paypal buy option from the gem store. They notice there is the same password. Guess what? Bad things are going to happen very quickly.

These types of measures are implemented for your own protection. A quick review of the 1st and 2nd page of this account forum should show how important it is to have a complex password. Myself I never use the same password for any site I am required to log into. I keep a book with the sites in alphabetical order and reference that if I need too.

Also if you set a complex password for GW2 and require password on login, which you should do anyway, you will have it memorized in no time.

Guardian WvW build

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: JustTrogdor.7892

JustTrogdor.7892

In my opinion the claim that any level, even a level 2, can play WvW is a bit misleading in the game description. Technically you can but you don’t have a chance unless you run into a 1v1 with someone around the same level. The odds of encountering a 1v1 with another level 2 are minuscule. If you run into an 80 you will be dead in 2 seconds as your skills/traits will be nowhere close to those capped at 80.

Unfortunately the green arrow makes you an automatic target for an easy kill. I suppose you could consider trying to run away for enemies or trying to hide in the middle of a zerg playing but what’s the point in that.

As someone that has been playing very casually for only 3 weeks subjectively I feel I don’t have full access to game as I don’t even try to play WvW after my first experiments playing low level there and getting massacred. My stance on it is basically whatever. There are plenty of other things for me to do until I reach 80.

The only way they could correct this would be to have tiered WvW servers and I don’t see that as a viable option. It would however be slightly helpful if they removed the green arrow.

What is the purpose of the multiboxing rule?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: JustTrogdor.7892

JustTrogdor.7892

I play 12 Guild Wars 2 accounts …

All the lack of follow function and rule in place to stop sending one key press to many accounts does is stops the game from making more sales.

But you have 12 accounts so obviously they have gotten some sales from you.

One thing you have not done to reinforce your argument is to explain exactly why you want to use this function. How do you plan to benefit from it and enhance your game experience? Do you want to just be able to run maps with yourself? Do you want to farm resource nodes with your accounts at the same place at the same time to get multiple drops then transfer them to your main? Why are you so adamant about being able to do this? Please tell us how keybinding your now 12 accounts will make your game more fun and enhance the gaming experience with your fellow gamers?

I bought 12 accounts because ArenaNet never made any statements about whether or not they were going to add a /follow command or not prior to the games release or when the game was available in pre-purchase. There was also no statement made in terms of multi-boxing the game then. Had I known about this rule then, I wouldn’t have bothered with this game.

I want to be able to do what everyone that plays MMOs does. Boast about what I’ve accomplished. That’s the purpose for how I play just as everyone that I’ve ever seen play an MMO do. If you check your guild chat, map chat, /say, people are always boasting about what they’ve done. From the items they’ve found in the game, the achievements they’ve made, the titles they have, everyone likes to let everyone know how well they’ve done what they did.

Whether or not ArenaNet makes any changes or not, I can still claim I’m the only player that ever multiboxed Guild Wars 2 with more than 10 characters

By having one key go to all 12 accounts, it will make the world vs world battle much more balanced in terms of playing against 12 players. It will give the chance at combat when meeting with 12 players about a 50/50 chance. If the 12 players have siege, it will drop my chances significantly, but with a /follow command in the game, I can just leave the area fast without any incurring damage and I’ll have to wait for more reinforcements. In terms of the zerg, it won’t make that much of a difference unless I see the zerg coming from a distance and get the heck out of the way fast.

I enjoy PvP, but not with a 10% win ratio against the same number of players as I have characters.

You are dodging the other issue. Sure okay play 12 accounts and look cool I couldn’t care less. However you asked why the rule was in place. You many never even have thought about ways to abuse mulitiboxing but for every one of you there are probably 50 that have and have tried it. The rule was just not thrown out there just to kitten you off. “Hey this guy just bout 12 accounts, lets make a macro rule just to mess with him.”

The rules are there not based simply on one person’s play but that of all the players. You can probably thank other multiboxers that abused the system for the rule you are so unhappy about.

Once again, please don’t post here if you are not on topic. This message thread is not a discussion on farming nodes.

Sure it is on topic. The title of your thread is “What is the purpose of the multiboxing rule?” You are wondering why and people are sharing that the rule is in place to minimize exploits and keep game balance fair. Thus it is appropriate to give examples of why the rule is in place. The farming node is a simple easy to understand example of how it could be abused.

You may be the coolest, most honest multiboxer in the world for all I know but many would not be and would take advantage of single key functions for controlling say 12 accounts at once.

Anyway have fun with your 12 accounts and enjoy the game. The rule you don’t like will most likely not change no matter how much you argue for it’s fairness.

Best of luck,
