Equip a GS, pick gear with power and precision, trait for greatsword in beastmastery. Go for remorseless in marksmanship.

Should make it super easy to get through the last few levels.

Now that they’re aware of this, they’ll do the logical thing…increase the CD of MW to that of CoF!

Na, this is not necessary.

I think the most urgent priority for Anet to fix Mesmer is disable/nerf PU, and add an ICD for reflect on manipulation (10 sec) reflect on dodge (10 sec), and shatter blind (5 sec)

It is quite insane a class can has this many on demand reflect by doing literally nothing.. This basically tell you that if you’re not Mesmer, go kitten yourself because you’d never kill them in WvW.

Went to edge of the mist today with my mesmer I am leveling. Got killed.

Personally I think you have to decide first: Condition or direct damage.
If you want to go with conditions, the greatsword is just not a good choice. While you can use the stuff in a direct damage setup fairly well, the other way around just does not really work.

F2’s only right to exist is the moment when F1 and Signet of Illusions are on cooldown.

It is called “Cry of Frustration” for a reason: Because it sucks compared to Mind Wrack and every mesmer using it is frustrated because he/she would prefer to use F1!

You can always go with the updated Lazy Kai Build. While you may have to adapt a bit for world bosses, it will be working great in general open world.

Just check my signature.

I have a second build too, called Crazy Kai Build, which is way more active than the Lazy Kai Build. It is not yet published though. If you are looking for a very active playstyle I can post you some traits and stuff.

Edit: Well, here it is. If you like to dodge and shatter, and shatter more, this is your first choice.

As I am leveling a new mesmer, I can confirm that for a new character there is a free choice of what to pick.

In Kenjir’s case I would say, just go on leveling. Unlock Dueling and start investing there.

Kai, I would be more inclined to believe you if investing in signets wasn’t such a promising result. The first signet you get is Signet of the Ether, which is the best PvE heal skill, and the next one you unlock is Signet of Inspiration, both of which are very very nice skills to have while leveling.

IMO, the best way to spend your hero points is first the Signets skills to get the first two, and then dump the rest into Dueling.

The first part of my new leveling guide has been online for some days and I came to the same conclusion back then while leveling my new mesmer.
I shall quote myself from here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Guide-Kai-s-Complete-PvE-Compendium/first#post2848341

Secondly, you can now pick your first utility skill. My personal advise is to spend four points into “Signet Training” to get both, “Signet of the Ether” – your new healing skill, and “Signet of Inspiration” – your first utility skill.

Signet of the Ether will give you some passive healing, a good base heal and a way to reset your phantasm timers. So even if you do no need healing, you can use this skill to greatly buff your damage. Signet of Inspiration is very nice, as it gives you swiftness and together with the focus you can have permanent swiftness uptime.

The second part of my new mesmer leveling guide is not done yet, unfortunately, but Dueling is the way to go.

Here some unedited not yet published lines:

Leveling 21-xx: I see myself four times. I must be trunken twice.

You did it! Yeah, you might not have realized it, but you have left your early days behind and are now to become one of us. What made the difference? Traits.

If you were as greedy with your hero points as I have hinted earlier (like not spending them on skills to actually experiencing the beauty of GW2), you will have some left over to dump into your traits. The obvious question is, where to put them. And if you are reading this, the obvious answer is: You have no idea. Fear not, the answer is at hand.

You will have to pick one trait line, and the one you should choose is Dueling. From now on, EVERY SINGLE HERO POINT you earn is to be spent here. You should have enough hero points to actually get some nice stuff. We are specifically aiming for Phantasmal Fury (adept), Fencer’s Finesse (master) and Deceptive Evasion (grandmaster). Getting these traits is your Nr. 1 priority. Nothing else matters. If you do anything else with your hero points, you will regret it later on, be warned.

Nothing wrong with the GS, still strong in open world. I am playing around with the new GM GS trait right now. While I think it could use a buff, it is still a fair might stacking possibility.

“Stop being lazy Kai!”

Got some PMs and direct requests if and when I will update my compendium. We had a big patch after all, we have Traits 3.0, we have a whole lot of changes.

And wow, ANet did some things right this time (at least compared to what we got with the last two feature patches).
Things I like: Shatter is now worth it in PvE again, yay! Leveling looks more promising and more traits are always nice (even though I dislike how we are forced into adept/master/grandmaster traits).

So here we go. I have a new and working open world Lazy Kai Build I am testing right now with all the qualities the old one offered, sort of. Go Go Power Ranger Build? Not so much as it feels like it was fused with the Lazy Kai Build too much.
Also working on a new melee build, but first things first.

Updating the leveling guide will take some time. First of all I feel the need to roll yet another mesmer to get the right feeling for leveling under the new system. I am planning to use my revenant slot for this even though I would greatly appreciate a free character slot for the expansion. ^^
I really think that updating the leveling guide will help a lot of new players joining us with the expansion, so doing so should not be a waste of time.

So I will stop being lazy so that you can be. Cheers.

Other games give you an exciting homepage to explore if they are announcing an expansion, with Heart of Thorns we get a tiny bit here and a tiny bit there, and if you are not interested much in one of the tiny bits, you have to wait at least a week to maybe get some more information on the stuff you want.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t most companies revealing an expansion spread out the reveals of features and such over time?

Most companies give a fair overview. They tell you what you will get and than start releasing information ont the topics.

ANet gives a mysterious hint on what we might get with the expansion and than takes forever to actually tell us what they mean.

Look at the specialization thing. After monthes, we do not know half of them, we just know there will be something. Let’s not start with maps or gameplay, group content like raids or dungeons or most of the stuff in general.

Well, this last week’s release of information was pretty big. I think there were 6 or 7 blogs alone on the new Guild Halls. Something a lot of players have been asking for, for a long time; especially the GvG-type content.

It was pretty big compared to what we got in the weeks before, and they needed something to tell in times of E3.
Still not impressive matters of information. It is one of the single biggest features of the expansion.
They should have given us some 30 minutes of maguuma gameplay and some profession videos to push the hype.

Ravezaar is right though, the hype is pretty much dead and the expansion fiasco didn’t help much.

They did something similar with the first “feature patch” and it just felt awkward to have a daily announcement for trivial stuff like taking away the costs for repairs.

This weekly schedule just feels like butter scraped over too much bread. It feels like ANet is trying to make the little stuff we get in the expansion look like something really big.

They should have called the expansion “Blowfish of Thorns”…

The problem there is that, as many have pointed out time and again, GW1 is not a MMO. It can not be used as a standard by which we judge GW2, which is a MMO. On the other hand other MMO companies have done similar promotions, which does set precedent.

Except this is not about the genre but about the business plan. It’s much fairer to compare the game to GW1 than another MMO because of the B2P approach which other MMOs don’t use. They use F2P or box + subs or combinations thereof. Totally different approach and in other MMOs I’ve played they didn’t do it this way. Some MMOs give expansion free to subs, others give different package deals for just the expansion or a combo price for core + expansion.

What I’ve not experienced is an MMO that comes out with it’s first expansion and just before it comes out suddenly decides to thrown in the core game free with it. But maybe you have an example of that.

It would’ve been wiser to do this differently. Now a lot of people are upset. More than needed really.

Again, this is not the first company to do this type of promotion (and thats what it is, a promotion). Other companies (not just MMOs) have done the exact same type of thing and it was perfectly fine. So why is it suddenly an issue when Anet does it?

The issue is that you’re all using the FAQ and calling false advertising. Stating they lied to us when no such action has occured. The question asks if the core game is required to play the expansion. It is answered, yes, it is required. No where do we ask if we are required to purchase it and given an the answer of yes. No where do they commit one way or the other in regards to us needing to buy or not buy the game, and that is done intentionally.

Nope.

There are three versions of the expansion offered by ANet and other official retailers offer one version (the same as the $50 version of ANet).

All version will work on purchase without a GW2 core game. There is no other option, no other expansion version.

Fact: If you buy any version of the so called expansion, you do not need the GW2 core game. Therefore the only answer to the question in the FAQ actually is: No, whatever you buy, as long as there is Heart of Thorns written on it, you do not need anything else to play it.

ANet is using semantics to make it look like Heart of Thorns is an expansion, but in fact, it is a GW2 2.0.

The problem with your “fact” is that HoT is only playable for new plays if that core game is included. If they opt to unbundle it after pre-purchase is over (unlikely, but possible) HoT would indeed not be playable unless you also purchased the core game. It does not change the fact that the core game is necessary in order to play. It being bundled with it is beside the point.

But there won’t.

There is no boxed Ultimate Edition version of the game and no other editions of the game being offered beyond what you see on buy.guildwars2.com.

We have an FAQ that covers this and other questions you may have: https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/94582027-Heart-of-Thorns-Pre-Purchase-FAQ

How should they opt out of this, selling the expansion as expansion later for less coin? The forums would burn. Sell it without core game for the same price? They would never get new players again.

So no, things are the way they are.

False Advertising

“Any advertising or promotion that misrepresents the nature, characteristics, qualities or geographic origin of goods, services or commercial activities” (Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C.A. § 1125(a)).

Proof Requirement

To establish that an advertisement is false, a plaintiff must prove five things: (1) a false statement of fact has been made about the advertiser’s own or another person’s goods, services, or commercial activity; (2) the statement either deceives or has the potential to deceive a substantial portion of its targeted audience; (3) the deception is also likely to affect the purchasing decisions of its audience; (4) the advertising involves goods or services in interstate commerce; and (5) the deception has either resulted in or is likely to result in injury to the plaintiff. The most heavily weighed factor is the advertisement’s potential to injure a customer. The injury is usually attributed to money the consumer lost through a purchase that would not have been made had the advertisement not been misleading. False statements can be defined in two ways: those that are false on their face and those that are implicitly false.

1) False statement: The original GW2 game is needed to play the expansion GW2:HoT
2) Everyone interested in GW2:HoT was mislead to require GW2
3) People would have not bought GW2 if they knew that the expansion was including the full game
4) Yap
5) People payed money for something they didn’t have to.

Dunno, looks good to me.

It was false advertising. It doesn’t actually matter much if it was intended or not.

If you tell someone he will need A to use B and B is an expansion to A, it is fairly safe to assume that if you only buy B it will not work.
Additionally, if someone says “Hey you can buy B soon, but as you will need A to play it, I have this very special offer for you!” the costumer is tricked into buying A now, so he can play B in the future.

Now, after offering A for monthes on special sales, telling everyone that if you buy B, A is no longer required (because B actually includes A) any half decend lawyer will win the case on false advertising.

While I don’t care, I think ANet is walking on fairly thin ice here.

But havent Anet said that there will be no boxed version?

Its all really confusing.

Webhallen, the Swedish store selling HoT as expansion only for €35 (they specifically note that GW2 is required) is listed as an Anet certified retailer.

I find it odd that Webhallen would have the wrong info available.

Does this mean that the pre-purchase version of HoT sold here on the webpage include GW2 and is more expensive than the pre-order version that is expansion only?

Wait wtf? Why couldnt they have told us this?!?!

It is a total fiasco no matter what.

The link i provided is pre purchase but from 23rd of june , its also $10 cheaper , im just curious how they can off it for cheaper ? im hoping anet can explain later

It is just how it works. A product you want to sell over a third party has to be cheap enough for the third party to make enough profit to actually want to sell it.

Third party sellers will probably buy GW2:HoT for roughly 1/3 of the retail price, which will give them enough room to sell it for a cheaper prize.

I’ll just quote myself on this from yesterday:

This is my way of protest for ANets expansion-gate.

I will buy the “expansion” or whatever you want to call it – twice. But I wont pre-purchase it.

There are several reasons for this, but the biggest of them is that I think that ANet got greedy. Therefore not pre-purchasing the game from their store will result in the smallest amount of money they will get from me (unless I wouldn’t buy it at all).

Let me explain:
If you pre-purchase GW2:HoT directly from ANet, they will earn $50 minus taxes (before NCsoft’s share). That is actually what I really like to do for companies I support, financing them directly. I would have done so, if the whole expansion-gate had never happened.
Now if you buy the game from a retailer, the profit for ANet is at max 1/3 of the recommended retail price. That’s just how it works. So by buying a physical or digital copy in a store I will cut ANet’s profit by 2/3.
The funny thing is, that I will have to pay less for the game (around 1/3) from a retailer, as they tend to offer sales at release so more people will buy it in their store (I expect GW2:HoT will be sold as low as $35), which will result in a win/win situation for me.

Sorry ANet. Nowadays it becomes fairly common to treat existing customers worse than new ones (like new contracts being cheaper in the first 24 monthes and stuff) but I am not going to accept that from you.

I will vote with my wallet – and still enjoy GW2:HoT.

Thank you.

My link is an actual pre-purchase, from the 23. you can actually play GW2, and you own the expansion.

It is actually the same deal as the pre-purchase offered by ANet.

I think it is safe to say, that pre-purchase in general will start on tuesday from third-party sellers.

You guys should stop playing video games and get better jobs

This is not about money, this is mainly about value. There is a difference.
If you have grown up in a very consumer heavy society like North America, throwing money at over-prized stuff is part of your daily life. The value of a product is secondary as long as it is the up-to-date “thing”.

In other societies the value of a product consists of both, the cost and the degree of satisfaction in regards of expectations. $50 here is a dinner for two, $100 if you want something better than pizza. Even though you could say that is fairly expensive, together with the experience I see enough value to pay for the experience.
I don’t care about the prize tag, as long as I see the proper value in the product.

Which right now I see not in GW2:HoT, and neither does my wife. Two less buyers of the expansion for now.

What HoT Prices SHOULD Have Been

It is not uncommon to sell an expansion and ship the base game for free with it. Age of Conan’s first expansion “Rise of the Godslayer” came with the core game included but only one key. So new players got the core game, the expansion and a free month on top of that for the purchase, while veterans got the expansion and nothing more and people didn’t complain about it as much as they do here.

The real problem is that ANet sells the expansion at the cost of a full game, while we – as far as we know – will not get nearly as much content as we got with the release of the core game. So this makes the offer look like a rip off.

Look, if ANet sold GW2:HoT for $30, including the core game, noone (well there are always some) would complain. Everyone expected to shell out 30 bucks anyway. But $50 and most every veteran will have to buy an additional character slot, which makes the expansion cost more like $60, that is just blown out of dimension.

And that is the problem.

On a more serious note, contact support. You are probably not the first one with this problem, and they know what to do.

Shouldn’t the prepurchase be cheaper then the retail version? I mean you discard the safety of knowing the game’s quality via reviews, and take a leap of faith with it…

Pre-orders in nearly all cases are essentially a cash grab from over-hyped fans. People will justify the actually bad decision to pay more for something they don’t even get before others with their “support” for the game, but in the end, they just are not patient enough to wait.

I bought a physical copy of GW2 at realease in a store for € 37.99.
I am almost certain that I will get an offer even cheaper for GW2:HoT, probably € 34.99 at release (store price for a physical copy). Maybe I will just buy a key online, which will be even less than that.

So people should calm down. You only have to pay $ 50 / € 45 now, if you for – whatever reason – feel like you have to do so. Otherwise, safe your bucks and get the same for way less coin.

Well they did say reveal would be limited to 3 so why are you complaining again?

Man good thing “logic” like doesn’t work in the real world…

oh i’m telling you that i’m going to take all your money, and your car, but since I told you first you can’t complain!!! No take backs!

Sounds like a regular divorce to me. Everyday business..

is Anet done with the reveals?

Nope, we are done for now.

Wait for the next specialization to get a new weapon – would be an educated guess.

Humans have shapeshifting too, it is not Norn exclusive. So the Norn argument is baseless.

There are many different kinds of shapeshifting anyways, ruling them all out because one type exists is just a bad idea.

I’d love to see some shapeshifting with the druid profession, even though I am fairly sure it won’t happen.

Sort of too early to be useful. As long as there is information missing (maybe I have missed it, but what exactly is the effect of Illusions VIII: Master of Fragmentation) it is hard to create anything.

Also, I still hope for the GS trait being placed in the master section instead of the grand master trait slots. It is simply too sub-par for most any build to take as even phantasm mesmers are forced to shatter more often from now on and probably go with VIII instead.

Lazy Kai will probably be something like:

I miss old Orr. Orr as it is right now is already a walk in the park.
You are invading the core territory of an elder dragon. Sure, let’s do some fun heart quests here like feeding cows…

You as a pact commander are a threat to Zhaitan, expect him to send his minions to destroy you and make you a member of his undead army.

I was sad when they nerfed Orr. And I was running it solo with just the random people that I met on the way. God forbid that you cannot just run past all and every mob around, skipping all stuff. Some people enjoy it if it actually feels like you are really fighting your way through.

I have great hopes for the expansion, content might be challenging at first at least.

What will happen if Continuum Split is activated before a mesmer shapeshifts. Like into a giant bear.

Will it:

a) Do nothing, aka canceling the effect (sort of expected).
b) Keeps you in your shapeshifted form, but teleports you back (probably messing with your health points, as they are different in forms).
c) Kicks you out of the form, ports you back and tells you to try harder next time.
d) Something.

While I am fairly sure that we cannot use Continuum Shift actively while shapeshifted (as we cannot use any other shatter skill while transformed), it is still on a countdown and the rift can be destroyed to force the effect.

So what is going to happen?

Oh the countless new possibilities. Sounds very promising for shatter mesmers too.
