Greater penalties for Death

Because, as many others have said already, running back is annoying as **** and the worst thing to waste is TIME. Time we could be doing something else, like doing whatever it was we were trying to do before we died.

The “time sink” argument seems pointless to me. Truly. I’m really not trying to anger people on this thread, please consider that, but logging into an MMORPG is in itself a time sink.

Running back can be annoying, largely depending on distance and obstacles, but it is minor. Also there are people that could care less about waypointing because when the event is done they will be revived anyways. All they have to do is lay there, have other people do the work (at a slower pace because of the dead), and wait for revival. Rarely is there consequence for that as most times they still get event credit and loot. Why do they still get the reward? Because they recklessly threw themselves at a boss or mob without a care, put in a burst of damage, and then found themselves on their kitten.

Two examples of people not waypointing.
Temple of Grenth – Its understandable because it can be a very challenging event. However the dead pile up and STAY there because, “someone else will finish the event”. Event fails? “Doesn’t matter much. I was watching TV and hoping to get a reward on the side.”
Golem – One of the absolutely most insane spots to ‘not waypoint when dead’. It is literally right next to this particular event. Yet I still see people throw themselves into melee or mid-range without watching for attacks, dodging, etc. They die but they did a burst of dmg. The zerg will complete the event on their own.

Again, the ‘Time Sink’ argument is frustrating to me. Would it be an enjoyable game if you sat down at your computer, logged into GW2, and within 30 seconds of logging in were handed everything to you?

There is no risk in combat, there is only reward – regardless of skill. Yes, this is my opinion. I’m allowed to share it.

Many have asked on this thread why, “so many want to make the game harder?” I can only speak for myself and not the rest. But my answer would be because it isn’t hard. Stupidity is rewarded in this game. Yes, there are reasons we die that are beyond our control sometimes – but they are overshadowed by the number of deaths that are avoidable.

Why do we even have DPS, Control, and Support roles? Why do we have combat mechanics? They’re a part of this game, or they are supposed to be, yet they are not being utilized.

As I’ve stated a few times on this thread. I’m not supporting permadeath, level reversal, or the removal of items/loot from a player’s inventory. Something temporary that can be seen as a penalty, but not so harsh that it would be game breaking for those that died by unfortunate means. Something that could be removed through some other means.

Many people have already given you a much better opinion and in better words than I have.

My favorite is the one that says something to the effect of “greater death penalties don’t make the game harder, they just make it more frustrating”. Why not reply to that one?

The problem is that quote is not true. lets say you have a dungeon where if people die, they cant be revived until the dungeon is over. That penalty has made the dungeon WAY more difficult, it also changes strategies, now getting someone alive is a priority, there will be tactics and strategies for dealing with someone being downed(so they wont die).
yes, it is also frustrating, but you SHOULD be frustrated when you die, its a negative situation. It should not be the expected behavior. It makes you actually desire to play better.

No, the dungeon is NOT more difficult. Just more frustrating.
As many others have pointed out, it’s a game. We don’t want to be frustrated by death because it already sucks enough to die. If you want to make death “harder” (it’s not), then go ahead and give yourselves penalties. Nobody is stopping you. I haven’t seen anyone reply to THAT point. Guess it’s got too much logic…

Actually it is more difficult.
play Contra with 3 lives and 4 continues
play contra with 30 lives and 4 continues
tell me for real which one is more difficult
tell me for real which one is a better show of your skills at contra.

I mean hey i get you dont want it to happen, but you really need to stop pretending that it is not easier to have infinite tries/lives.

Just say, yeah its more difficult, but i dont really want things to be more difficult, life is annoying already.

That’s not even the same comparison at all. A proper analog would be

Play Contra with infinite lives and continues
Play Contra with infinite lives and continues, but you have to wait 10 minutes between deaths.

Free transmutations for gear under level 80?

I like to play around with different armor configurations, and sometimes things don’t look quite the way I want them to in the preview window (due to lighting effects, animations, etc).

I was thinking, wouldn’t it be nice to have gear that’s under level 80 be free to transmute? At this point, no one is transmuting armor unless it’s gear they’ll be using in the long run (level 80 rares or higher). I think it would be nice to have a set of sub-optimal gear that I can use to play with armor styles.

It doesn’t even have to be level 79 and under gear. Level 60 or even level 40 gear with free transmutes would be sufficient for experimenting.

Greater penalties for Death

Katai.6240

Death penalties tend to impact games like this rather negatively. It creates an environment where people are much more careful, as well as make people much more hostile towards one another. Here are some things I noticed in games that have moderate to severe death penalties.

  • People don’t try content until level cap with full equipment. If a dungeon is marked at level 20, people still won’t do it until they reach level cap. This is because death penalty slows them down on the way to the cap (either with an exp or gold penalty). Most dungeons and new areas will be avoided by the general population until a guide is posted. New areas won’t be visited until the player is overleveled for that area’s level rating (won’t go into a level 20 zone until you’re level 30).
  • Difficult content will be ignored. Even with good rewards, people will avoid the hard content. Boss Blitz causes a lot of deaths, for instance. People would avoid this event completely if there was a harsh death penalty, and people will always rely on the safest way to earn rewards.
  • Experimentation of builds will not happen. People want to use safe builds to keep themselves from dying. While sub-optimal/personalized builds are uncommon now, a death penalty will render them extinct.
  • People will blame deaths on party members. We already have a lot of toxicity in Dungeons and Fractals parties. Harsh death penalties will only magnify this problem, as toxic players will blame and verbally abuse others for their deaths.

I would vote no on harsh death penalties. I don’t see any reason to stifle a person’s sense of adventure with the sense of fear. Why would you stop people from conquering the Temple of Lyssa with the threat of loss exp or gold. Why would anyone do a jumping puzzle if they’ll lose gold/exp if they happen to die?

A Designer's viewpoint: Condition Caps

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

Why make this more complicated than simple DPS?

2000 damage per second from direct damage the same as 2000 damage per second from conditions.

Both have pros and cons. Direct damage can be avoided by moving out of the way, or skills that mitigate direct damage. Condition damage can be cleansed or converted. Neither is really better than the other in the macro scale. We can discuss the meta-game once condition damage is viable, but right now there’s no room for that discussion because no one is using Condition damage anyway.

The only problem is the Condition damage cap. A single person can build to stack all damage condition stacks at full right now. This means that if there are two people built for condition, their combined damage is the same as a single person.
2000dps Direct + 2000dps Direct = 4000dps
2000dps Direct + 2000dps Condition = 4000dps
2000dps Condition + 2000dps Condition = 2000dps <—- This is the problem.

Even if they just double the Condition cap from what it is now, it will at least make condition damage somewhat viable in dungeons and 5-man skirmishes.

Last year the sunglasses (sport and aviator sunglasses) were removed from the gem shop. I didn’t mind, mainly because they were town clothes that couldn’t be used anywhere useful.

But now I find out that anyone with the sunglasses can use them as basic head armor skins! If I had known, I would’ve bought them a long time ago! So are we ever going to see these skins again? A piece of me just dies every time I see someone running around in them.

I still don’t understand the “Not crossing armor classes” argument for using Town Clothes as normal armor skins.

I mean, all the event skins are placed across all three armor classes. Your helmet, shoulder, gloves, and whatnot are going to have shared skins. The skins available in the gem shop don’t even share the same basic armor class styles. Ancestral looks like light armor, but can be used for heavies. Pirate captain looks like medium armor. Profane armor doesn’t look like light armor at all.

Katai.6240

@Zera: a bit of a hyperbole, I think. I play with a gamepad all the time, and it’s not as terrible as you say it is. I mean, why would you do any of the menu-related stuff with a gamepad anyway? Why would you use anything except Teamspeak in sPVP? If you’re checking the mail in the middle of a fight, you’re doing something wrong. Clearly you would use the mouse and keyboard to do your Trading Post stuff, but when you’re actually playing the game, you would use the gamepad.

I use XPadder and Autohotkey for my setup. This is what I do, in relation to an Xbox controller.

Left Stick – ASDW
Right Stick – Center mouse on screen. Hold down right click and move mouse.
R1 – 1
R2 – Jump
R3 – Dodge (thinking of switching this with R2)
L1 – Interact
L2 – Toggle Skills
L3 – 6
ABXY – 2345
L2 + ABXY – 7890
Dpad – ZXCV
L2 + Dpad – Targeting/quickturn

I can do everything in combat with these settings. When I play on a tablet (using Kainy), so I have touch screen controls for stuff like accessing the map and trading post.

I’m having a lot of trouble picking out Sigils with the changes to a ton of sigils and lot of guides being outdated at this point.

I’m running a Warrior (Berserker build) with Sword/Shield and Hammer. I know it’s not optimal damage-wise, but it’s the weapons I consider fun and rewarding. I generally stick to PvE, Dungeons, and a bit of WvW. Anyway, my initial thoughts are this:

Sword – Sigil of Fire
Shield – Sigil of Air

Hammer – Sigil of Impact and Sigil of Paralyzation

If I understand the changes right, Air and Fire should work together properly.

Soundless and Tablet

in Sylvari

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

I don’t think it’s fair to talk about the soundless as a group. In truth, they would probably want to be known as individuals.

The Pale Tree is a strong influence on Sylvari. Some may find the voice of their mother overbearing. Some may find the emotions the floods through them overwhelming. Some may think the dream given to them as disappointing. There are many reasons why a Sylvari may leave the Pale Tree. I don’t think it’s fair to assume they’re all the same.

The Soundless are out to establish their own individuality, find their own paths, for their own reasons. In some cases, they’ll follow the teachings of Ventari, but only after the come to the same conclusions themselves. I don’t see them as “atheists”, but rather “skeptics”. When they hear “All things have a right to grow”, they question whether or not that is true, and try to find the answers themselves.

I imagine that the soundless have the potential to be stronger evangelists of Ventari’s teachings than any other Sylarvi. They would not only have the conviction, but the first-hand experience that upholds the things Ventari teaches.

Of course, they would also be at most risk to abandon Ventari’s teachings as well. I’m sure many soundless have turned to the Nightmare court. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the soundless started worshiping the Human gods, or prayed to the Norn Spirits, or even sacrificed to the fires of the Flame Legion.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

The requirements for the early traits are a bit too harsh. By the time you get your first Major Trait slot, I think you should have at least 6 different traits unlocked just for playing the game up to that point.

So many of the first tier traits require 100% map completion or doing story mode in a Level 50+ dungeon. This makes traits completely inaccessible in the early game. I mean, look at this set of requirements for the 2nd set of traits.

I Find the splendid chest in Earth’s Gap.
II Complete Twilight Arbor in Story Mode.
III Defeat Ulgoth the Modniir and his minions.
IV Earn 100% completion in Lornar’s Pass.
V Earn 100% completion in Bloodtide Coast.
VI Earn 100% completion in Fireheart Rise.

I – Level 20 in Human area. Other races will not be anywhere near here
II – Level 50-55 dungeon
III – Level 43 group event
IV – Level 40 zone
V – Level 55 zone
VI – Level 70 zone

What’s the point in giving out trait points at level 30 if you can’t do anything until you’re level 50?

Not with how conditions work you can’t.

Conditions work fine in WvW. Epidemic would be your bread and butter. Propagating conditions to a huge patch of the enemy zerg is pretty fantastic.

Aside from that, though, Power Necros do incredibly well. Their Wells do fantastic AOE damage, and their death shroud benefits from Berzerkers as well.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

Sort of missing the point.

The fact that you shouldn’t go condition damage in PvE IS the problem. There’s a huge avenue of diversity available in condition builds, but is completely negated by the condition cap.

That fact that a single person can keep full stacks of bleeds, poisons, and burns is a problem. In a group of 5 people, having 4 Power damage and 1 condition damage is fine. Having 3 power damage and 2 condition damage means one person is completely worthless in this battle, and you’re basically doing a dungeon with 4 people.

Basically, why create the content if it can’t be used? Why have condition damage at all if it’s effective DPS in groups is zero?

Then there’s the sPVP and WvW applications that aren’t so selfish.

Removing spell effects is pretty darn easy to code, and rather than waiting 6 months to create new versions of every spell effect, we can have something that is functional now. It’s not pretty, but it works.

“Ain’t” is a proper English word. You can end your sentences with propositions. You can use “Who” and “Whom” interchangeably. You can even use double negatives. Within spoken English, as long as people understand you, it is fine. That is what defines a dialect (or even an idiolect), and there’s nothing wrong with it.

However, if you are writing a formal academic paper on any subject, you probably should comply with the American Academic English standards. Not only must you leave “ain’t” out of your vernacular, you must also remove “can’t”, “don’t”, “won’t”, and other seemingly equivalent options.

The paywall is probably less about profit than it is about controlling bot population. Free to play games have huge problems managing bots because banning an account/IP/Region doesn’t actually work. It’s easy to get a new IP, fake an IP, get a new email account, etc etc etc.

By having a paywall, bots are less profitable, and therefore less prevalent. Most bots are from hacked accounts on gw2 rather than created from scratch.
