Survey: Want Ascended Armors & Weapons?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I want them to let us “Upgrade” our exotics into Ascended, if ascended ever comes up.
Basically, if they do it right, we would “cook” our Sigil/Runes into our existing armor and unlock the infusion slot.

I would have a hard time accepting any other solution…

No, I think what they’re asking for is a pop-dialog that says

“Warning: You cannot equip multiple unique items with the same name on a single character. Do you still want to purchase?”

Heck, we get pop-up dialogs for salvaging green items, and those are basically worthless. Having a pop-up for a laurel vendor isn’t too far fetched, is it?

The main issue is that most people are piled around the event maps. GW2 has one or two long running events each month, and that tends to be where everyone gathers. Right now, everyone is in Southsun. Last month, people were piled in Wayfarer Foothills and Diessa Plateau.

If you want to group up with people, just send party invites out when running in a crowd. You gain bonuses for being in a party, so most people aren’t shy to accept.

You’re basically choosing between 20% more gold/magic find vs 4/5 in a stat.

Seems like a no brainer to me. You only need agony resist for level 20+ fractals. Level 1-9 don’t have any agony damage, and level 10-19 can be done easily without agony resist (and you’ll get AR from rings anyway).

Why do Sylvari have genders?

in Sylvari

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

Wow, there are a lot of semantic problems in this thread. I guess to make sure people who know the heck I’m talking about, I’ll stick to this standard.

Sex – In reference to biological/physical structure, i.e. Male vs Female vs Intersexed
Gender – In reference to social/behavioral structure, i.e. Masculine vs Feminine vs Genderless
Sexuality – In reference to romantic/sexual interest – Heterosexual vs Homosexual vs Bisexual vs Asexual.

Sylvari have physical sex, but the form itself is rather arbitrary. As per lore, they have the shape of Man and Women, but that serves no reproductive purpose. It can be argued either way, I think. You can say that Sylvari have a designated sex because they mimic the biological sex of men and women. You can also say that Sylvari are a “sex-less” race, in the same manner that you don’t consider individual leaves of a tree to be of distinct sex even if they look different.

In reference to gender, Sylvari certainly do have gender. They express feminine and masculine traits, and there is a fuzzy line between them. Remember that gender is a social construct. The definition of what it means to be masculine and feminine changes with the culture. However, you can take note that they use gendered pronouns, and have distinct gender identity. I don’t think we can really assume that Sylvari gender is associated with a Sylvari’s physical form, though. We don’t have any evidence either way about this, honestly. Especially since lore shows Sylvari have some form of control over their physical form (growing leaves to simulate clothing), a Sylvari’s gender identity may have a direct effect on his or her physical form.

In reference to sexuality, as per lore, the Sylvari seem to have no qualms over gender preferences/orientations when it comes to romance or sex. The preference for a male Sylvari over a female Sylvari seems to be equivalent to liking blonds over brunettes. Pansexuality (basically a step beyond bisexuality, claiming to enjoy relationships with all forms) is probably what is considered “normal”. I’m sure there are Sylvari who are exclusively heterosexual or exclusively homosexual, but I think they are considered atypical within the culture (considering how open-minded and curious they are). Because of this, I would think that Sylvari wouldn’t be too concerned with interspecies relations, either. Since sex serves no purpose than to enjoy each others companionship, I don’t think it’s much of a stretch for a Sylvari to consider romance with another race.

mana system?

mana system?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

Mana, essentially, is just a “global cooldown” attached to all your spells. Basically, it’d be something similar to the Thief resource system, except your skills have cooldowns as well.

So, strategically, what does this give us? Basically, if all the skills stay the way they are, you would fight until you run out of mana, then be forced to disengage. You can’t keep fighting because you can’t use skills anymore. This turns into a “whoever runs out of mana first wins” sort of deal, essentially. Resource management becomes the metagame.

Mana potions would introduce a “Richer player wins” scenario. Whoever can afford the potions have a clear advantage over those who cannot.

Mana would also likely introduce some “mana management” specs, where you would have to gear and trait into maintaining mana at the sacrifice of adding interesting effects to your current skills.

Overall, Mana is meant to be a “long term” resource, where you have to manage it across multiple encounters. GW2 doesn’t really work like that because you heal to full between encounters. Having your mana refill to full between encounters completely defeats any strategic elements to mana. But how would you refill your mana? Sitting still until it regens slowly is dumb. Potions are not gonna happen any time soon. Do you have to go back to town to refill mana? Go back to a keep?

700hr / 8 hour work day / 5 day work week / 4 weeks per month = 4.4 months of work if 1 hour of work == 1 hour of gameplay (which is a stupid and ridiculous expectation).

It’s actually more like 8 hours of work == 1 hour of gameplay (in the optimal case, honestly). That would take 35 months, or almost 3 years of work to create a single legendary quest line. In realistic terms, it might take closer to 5 years.

The nature of magic

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

“Magic is just science we don’t understand”. A lot of stuff in nature appears magical until we pick apart and learn what is happening. Glowing jellyfish, for instance, is an impressive phenomena that would easily be marked as Magical until we attained our knowledge of biology and chemistry.

A good lore has a proper “system of magic”. Introducing limits and circumstantial peculiarities to magic makes it more believable. It piques curiosity as to how it works and how the world takes advantage of it. Orrians making use of magic for trivially as opposed to Krytans who use magic strictly is really telling about the difference of culture and the circumstances in which they live.

It’s probably because your primary is the one on the left, and all games run on the #1 slot.

Here’s what you can do. Make the screen on the right your Primary monitor (Right click, Screen Resolution, and check “make this my main display”). This will make GW2 run on that screen.

Now, you’ll notice that you don’t have a taskbar on your left screen. Windows is dumb like that, but I have a solution. Install this program:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/dualmonitortb/

It’ll give you a taskbar on your secondary monitor, with start button, clock, and everything.

You guys should join my guild (BlackWater Vanguard on Yak’s Bend) when we do our Meta Event rushes. There are a LOT of DEs that no one takes part (because no one is tracking a timer) that gives the event chest, and some of them scale to a ridiculous level.

There’s one event in Orr that’s particularly hilarious. We had almost a hundred people in the group, which scaled the event up to two Champion Abominations. Now, each of these abominations were as tall as a dragon, and they are HARD. Like they charge through the zerg and everyone in its way is dead. We wiped the zerg at least twice taking these things down until we figured out the proper attack/dodge/revive rotation.

Trinity replaced with Duality?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

I don’t understand the desire for Trinity. It’s a solved puzzle. It reminds me of Zelda bosses. “Oh, thing with giant eye. I guess I shoot it with arrows. Yay, I win…”.

Sometimes I feel like no one plays higher level fractals. While the early fractal bosses are pretty cake, the higher level ones require a level of strategy where you need to designate roles. Roles aren’t really based on class or build, but they are roles that need to be filled anyway.

For example, for Bloomhunger, I found it best to have some kind of melee DPS to take out the small spirits to remove the harsh buffs they give. For Captain Ashym (Ascalon fractal), having area heals and regeneration are almost required to counteract his permenent Retailiation buff.

Then you have your Guild Bounty bosses, and all sorts of stuff goes down. A lot of them, you need some dedicated boon stripper. Or maybe you need area condition removal (wells, fields, condition flipping).

Maybe Anet hasn’t quite figured it out, but they’re definitely making progress in the right direction.

I'm sad because I can't play what I want

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

This is the problem that removing roles creates. Without defined roles to help structure combat and content, the classes with the most utility and optimal skills are just flat out undeniably more viable than the rest.

Example: Time Warp, Portal, etc.

Arguably, these skills are some of the most useful skills in the game. Does Guardian or Ranger have an Elite or Utility that is even half as effective or role-creating as Portal or Time Warp? Not really. The imbalance lies in the lack of distinction of roles and the disparity between skill favor. Aside from Wall Of Reflection, what Guardian utilities can you really say are as useful as Portal? Elites as useful as Time Warp? Absolutely none and it’s even worse for Ranger. ArenaNet needs to devote more resources into correcting these problems.

I don’t think removing roles contributes to this. In fact, it probably does the opposite. As useful as a Mesmer is for utility, it is nothing compared to the high demand of a Priest in WoW.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

I don’t really understand why people keep comparing GW2 to WoW when the class system is clearly much more like Diablo. The classes are completely self-sustaining. Classes can be built to a certain level of viability in many roles. Lack of a "true" healer or tank class. I feel like the GW2 to Diablo (particularly Diablo 2) is a much better comparison than GW2 with any of the other popular MMOs.

Some characters will always level a bit easier than others. My Necromancer did the first 40 levels easily with Minions to eat up damage, while the last 40 levels were really rough because of the lack of good damage output. My warrior has his Regen signet which makes every fight pretty dumb.

Unique is not a standard MMO term

Just because you’ve seen it in one or two MMOs does not make it standard. Nor is there a standard! There’s no commission that maintains a standard, and there is no one is ensuring that any standard is being followed! We have so much jargon in this genre, and for some reason people expect everyone to know what every term means in every context.

Unique means different things in different MMOs.

  • In some mmo, it means you can only equip one of its kind at any given time. That’s the definition here.
  • Sometimes it means that the item is truly unique, generated randomly for the player. There will never be another item with the same stats
  • Sometimes it’s the opposite. Items usually contain randomly generated stats, but unique items in this MMO means the item has fixed stats (that are usually very good)
  • Sometimes it means the item is simply a “Named” item. They’re special in the same way “Final Rest” is special.
