Why we necros are feeling so down about our class.

in Necromancer

Katai.6240

You definitely get funneled into certain builds when playing Necro, and a lot of that is unsatisfying.

My main problem with Condition damage is that it really does not matter in PvE/WvW environments. Large bosses are capped at 25 bleeds, so your bleed basically has no meaning compared to regular DPS. You’re just replacing someone else’s bleed, and someone is probably replacing your maxed condition bleed with their cruddy no-damage bleed anyway. In WvW, most people drop before you can even stack the bleeds. Epidemic is nice, but you’re mostly spreading everyone else’s conditions instead of your own. Also, condition damage does nothing for doing damage to siege or other structures.

Everything is also lackluster. Minions are useless. I’ve not had a minion who didn’t die right away at level 80. I’ve actually resorted to using seed turrets (and Take Root) in place of minions because they’re overall more reliable than our minions.

AOE sucks compared to other classes. Marks do not trigger on enemies who are Downed. They also don’t trigger on siege. They also don’t trigger on allies when you want the condition removal and regeneration buff to proc. Wells have a shorter range than staff spells, which makes it really annoying to use. There’s also only two wells that do any sort of damage. They also don’t have as much reach as other AOE spells (other AOE can reach siege on walls without any effort). I’m also pretty sure wells are Power based, so condition damage doesn’t even make these any good.

The only way I’ve felt useful in WvW/PvE is a Healing/Power build. We have a lot of healing going on, to be honest. Mark of Blood and Well of Blood is staple. Death Shroud can also be spec’d to heal as well (during Life Transfer, and against when leaving DS). No one notices healing (healing in general is pretty transparent and unappreciated), but I’m definitely keeping people alive here. You also get additional Mark of Blood while evading, and an extra Mark of Blood when reviving if you trait it up. I’m aiming for Runes of Mercy to buff my revive/healing utility, though it is still to be determined if that will do any good.

Did we skip a cycle today? If I recall correctly, resource nodes are supposed to respawn after 5:00pm PST (about an hour and a half ago). I usually farm potatoes daily for crafting in Metrica Province, but it looks like it hasn’t respawned today. Is anyone else noticing this?

How often do you weapon swap, and does it help your play style?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Katai.6240

I don’t swap as often as I would like. Necromancers don’t really stuff that works well with weapon swapping. I’m running Staff right now for the AOE, and switch over to Dagger/Horn when I want to travel far for the Swiftness buff (with Horn + Spectral Walk, you can have swiftness on permenantly). Other than that, Dagger, Scepter, and Axe don’t really do as much damage as I would like for being in Melee range in light armor.

I wanted to show a friend this event (it’s one of the more fun ones, IMO), but we can’t start it because the NPC won’t respawn.

Anybody else miss "punishing" games?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

Punishing MMOs have a tendency to make people afraid to go through the content. I’ve gone through enough of them to see this in action.

Experience penalties for death often leads to people waiting until they are overleveled before they attempt anything that appears difficult. Why go into an area that matches your level and risk dying when you can grind ten levels above and never die. You end up gaining levels faster and more efficiently because you simply die less using this tactic.

Runes of Magic suffered from this. At level 15, you get access to instance dungeons. No one did these dungeons at level 15. Everyone started doing them at level 30-ish because it guaranteed that they won’t die during the instance. The entire community ended up being a bunch of pansies kittenfused to do anything risky.

Here's what it is, and here's what it isn't.

For buying, FIFO would drive the price up. This is because it would be beneficial to bid above the price to get at the top of the queue. With LIFO, it keeps the price down, because to get to the top of the queue, you just match.

The same goes for selling. FIFO would drive the prices down because people want to undercut the competition (by 1c, most of the time) to have their stuff sell. LIFO, though, you don’t have to undercut to get to the top of the stack.

Whether or not this is a good system is up for debate, though.

Katai.6240

I succeed in WvW quite well on my necromancer. Definitely not the best there is, but I think I pull my own weight pretty well.

I stack up on Staff skills and Wells. The interesting thing about these spells is that they work through structures. I’ve killed a lot of people and siege equipment by targeting under bridges or through walls. Basic tactic for defending is to just drop Marks and Wells on the wall you’re defending. All the melee take a nice hit from that.

Well of Suffering is my bread and butter for most things. I like to use Spectral Walk to run up close to some siege equipment, drop a Well of Suffering, and then blink back to safety.

From ArenaNet’s responses to other tools, it’s all right as long as the player must interact with the game to play. I think it was regarding game-pad controller software.

In general, anything that loops is strictly not allowed.

I wonder if we can start a wiki page listing approved tools? There’s a lot of legitimate gaming software out there that would constitute as botting. My logitec mouse, for instance, can do looping macros (bannable offense), but I’m not sure if many people are aware of such things. People usually believe botting is some sort of black market tool, but that’s not always the case.

Yeah, forced is the wrong word. In the first arc of the Green Knight, when you saved a Sylvary’s lover, you don’t even find out that he’s a guy until you talk to him for the one line he has and go “Oh, that’s a male voice”. If you consider that “IN YOUR FACE”, then you probably shouldn’t go outside or two guys might make eye contact in your presence.

Seriously, I didn’t piece together Caithe/Faolin until I read this thread.

I’m hoping this is a kneejerk update to flatten the curve. I think a lot of people are making money too fast, and it probably needs to be balanced out, but the nerfs are definitely harsh. Changes the game too much.

If ANet is smart, they’ll start scaling it back up to the point where it’s worth doing, but won’t throw in more cash into the game than it can take out.

How GW2 IS becoming a "Grind" -MY thoughts.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

The game is less than a month old, and people are already crying for the apocalypse.

Can someone explain to me why these exotic/legendary weapons are necessary? I know they’re powerful, but are they necessary? From what I’ve seen, you can enjoy every part of the game with a set of level 80 blues.

If you’re grinding for vanity gear, that’s your call. It just sounds like you’ve gone through all the core content at an amazing pace, and now you’re angry because all you can do now is farm junk so you can get your Ultima Keyblade or whatnot.

Don’t get me wrong, ANet needs to fix up a few things. Some things are too easy to achieve, and some things are too hard. It just seems like they’re curving the “too easy” part right now. Karma for Gold exchange defeated the purpose of Karma for the most part, and 400 Cooking is still way too easy to achieve.

I hope they find time to curve the “too hard” part, or at least “hide the grind” better. They’ve done a great job at hiding the grind to level 80 with their content. Dungeons should be fun to do on their own right, and there should be no reason to repeat a dungeon except “That was awesome, let’s do it again”. I’d like to see more dungeons added to the game (this will take time), or somehow earn the same reward doing something else. You should be working towards your goal at a reasonable pace doing the things you enjoy, and dungeon grinding isn’t really working out.

What's up with the night/day cycle?

I’d rather not have any events based on a day-night cycle. It would essentially lock me out of certain events because I logged in at the wrong time of day. I don’t get to play much (maybe 30 minutes a day), so I’m not too keen on waiting for the sun to come up to do stuff.

Wow, really? So PvP monthly achievements are now “forcing” you to do PvP content? When the heck were achievements required at all?

100% Map completion isn’t all that important, either, for that matter. You get an ingredient to build a legendary weapon, but the legendary weapon is only really useful in PvP environments (you can do all the level 80 content with what you got, trust me). So why do you want it so much? The rewards have no practical purpose for you.

A rundown on support class options?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Katai.6240

Katai.6240

I will put in a recommendation for the Support Necromancer if you want a more typical ranged healer style character. Essentially everyone can heal, but I think Necromancer does a pretty good job at what people think a typical healer can do.

Go with a staff. This gives you AOE “traps” that do damage and support allies when triggered. 2 bleeds enemies in an AOE, as well as put regeneration on allies. 3 is a slow and poison. 4 removes conditions from allies, and transfers them to enemies. 5 is an AOE fear. You can get traits to lower the cooldowns and make the AOE size larger.

For slot skills, go with wells. They’re basically self-targeted AOE spells (unless you get the trait to make them ground targetable). Well of Blood heals in an area. Well of Power turns allied conditions into buffs. Well of Corruption turns enemy buffs into conditions. Really powerful stuff. Also Sigil of Undeath can revive 3 allies from being down, but its currently broken.

All classes have some kind of support. Granted, some are better than others.

Take a look at Necromancer, along with the classes already mentioned. Staff Necromancers drop spell-traps that heal/buff in an AOE. They also have wells which remove conditions and grant boons, as well as more AOE healing.

I think Thief is probably the weakest in the support group, but I’ve seen many people do support thief by reviving/healing people while stealthed.

Remember that some classes can swap weapons in battle. This essentially gives you an additional 4 skills (plus your auto-attack).
