Signet of Mercy - Weak

Let’s talk about our friend “Signet of Mercy”.
It has a 4 minute cooldown and revives one downed player within a range of 900 around the player.
It also has a very lengthy cast time – but since I’m not sure what the cast time of the others is , i will not compare this aspect.

Now, let’s compare this to some other very similar skills.

Necromancer, Signet of Undeath:
3 Minute cooldown, revives 3 downed players in target area , range 900.

Elementalist, Glyph of Revival:
2.45 Minutes cooldown
Fire : Revive ally, revive yourself the next time you’re downed.
Water : Revive ally with full health.
Air : Revive ally and teleport them to you.
Earth : Revive 3 allies.

Now i pose this question to you:
Why is the Guardian Signet inferior, by a large margin, to either one of those?

I believe the reasoning is that the engineer has more in the way of CC.
Now, whether that balances out the relatively lower damage or not … i suppose everyone has to decide that for themselves.
Personally i think the engineer weapons (and some weapon kits) could do with some more damage – but that’s just me.

Well, maybe i’m looking at it the wrong way then.
It just seemed that in terms of the number of available skills the guardian has a bit less.
But yeah, i suppose it does depend on how you view it.

Honest question here, please no arguing.
Why is it that Guardians have so few weapons compared to the warrior?

Warriors get 7 Main-hand and 5 off-hand weapons.
Guardians 6 Main, 3 Off.

Guardians also get 3 static abilities as their class mechanic.
Warriors get 1 per Main-hand weapon for a total of 7 (not at the same time obviously).

So where does this discrepancy come from?
Is it just because some weapons wouldn’t fit the guardian theme?
Personally, i think it is a little bit unfair, but that’s just me

I’m not sure where i read this but someone proposed having different effects depending on such things as your health.
It was something like:
If you have above 50% health elixir H would give you protection.
If you have below 50% health it would give you regeneration in addition to protection.
And if you have below 25% stamina it would give you vigor (possibly in addition to the above).

I think having conditional effects on both the elixirs and their thrown skills would be a nice way to solve things as it would still require you to ‘react’ to the situation you’re in.

Flamethrower auto attack sometimes misses every hit.

I find that it tends to always miss if your target is above you.
Imagine you and your target are both standing on a ramp, your target is further up – It seems to always miss in these cases (especially if you are close to your target).

The TP might not be in the best shape but this is no solution.
Why must things be inconvenient?

I think educating people about the fact that they actually lose money if they sell for 1 copper above the vendor price would be good enough.
Items are cheap because there is lots of them.
Look at the pre-legendary weapons and other sought after items – it works nicely for those.

Your entire post is invalid because you said an engineer does less damage than a mesmer. Rofl.

Mesmer is by far the most lack luster class in pve, because all you have going for you is your CC and confusion, Same thing in pvp.

People don’t play mesmer for the damage, they play it for the mind games.

How many classes have spammable aoes? You know, abilities that hit groups of mobs which is arguably better for pve? Cause I’m pretty sure I carried my team through arah just last night spamming aoe’s and hitting multiple enemies at the eye of zhaitan part.

Show me YOUR proof of other classes hitting harder aoe damage because I’m pretty sure a thief and warriors job is to hit hard single target. Thief is THE glass cannon class they’re suppose tokittenface in 1 on 1 situations

I don’t know why you are randomly rambling on about mesmers. You are putting words in my mouth.
I have not even mentioned mesmers anywhere – They have their own share of problems.

Quite frankly, this is getting a bit ridiculous.

Eles are doing quite well in the AOE department though we beat them in terms of range no doubt.

I’d appreciate it if we could leave it at the fact that we have different opinions about these things. It’s not helping that we’re messing up the thread with this

It’s funny how you think that engineers are underpowered. It simply shows that you played all 8 classes so you barely scraped the surface of what a class has to offer and thus have an invalid opinion.

At this point i have 2 classes around 60 and 1 around 70.
I need not play all 8 classes to see that the engineer is comparatively weak.
If any class is in worse shape than engineers it’s probably necros. Their traits are a mess.

People say grenades do good damage and they do compared to the other things the engineer has. Compared to the damage of more complete classes i feel that they are nothing special.

People say a static discharge build brings good burst to the table.
Again, compared to other classes i think it’s not special (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-H1zpdg7dU for example).

We are definitely good at CCing – but we have to be because the rest is comparatively weaker.

Please let’s also not forget the bugs the engineer has to deal with that have gone unfixed since the earliest betas – kit auto-attacks being just one example.

It simply shows you have no experience with the other classes to compare engineers to.
Also quite funny how people think that static discharge bursting is a secret and good damage.

The elixirs are currently defined by their traits.
The random boons they give are not something you can primarily use them for because you never know what you might get.
The devs thinking that requiring the engineer and his allies to quickly react to whatever they might get is fun and adds depth is utter nonsense and i can’t possibly understand how anyone can enjoy this unpredictability.
Losing a fight because you got the wrong effect is not fun.

Why do i have to fight the unreliability of my own skills?
Why do my own skills actively work AGAINST me?

So much hate.... Why?

Guardian scepter 1 is a homing, targeted attack. The smite zone has no travel time, so you will get at least some hits in, before they dodge out of it…

Last time i checked #1 wasn’t homing and you could simply sidestep it without much effort.
Smite hits seem random at best.

The scepter is as much a viable 1200 range weapon for the guardian as the tool kit is a viable melee weapon for the engineer.

I would like it to be like it was in one (maybe both?) BWEs. Which is where it did let you auto attack with the grenades (at least with the first one, not sure about the other 4 since I didn’t try it with them), when I had that ground target option set in the Options.

I don’t remember that but making it an option would solve pretty much all problems with it. Just add an option that makes all AOE spells centered on your current target if enabled.
This wouldn’t even make grenades overly powerful as the drawback is that you always aim directly below your target – making you miss when they move around. You also wouldn’t be able to use them as effectively in WvW against people on walls outside your LOS. But the point is that people would have the OPTION at least.

The simple solution is to buff rifle and pistol damage (especially single target) so people who want to PVE don’t feel “forced” to spam grenades in every situation.

I suppose this would in fact also be a solution.

I dont get why people say the power would need to be nerfed if it was target locked.
You can still see the grenades coming a mile off, and lets be honest if they are constantly moving the grenade will miss anyway.
The power of them is not THAT strong, even the Guardian Gsword 1 skill crits for 2k+ area with a 30 power build

Agreed.
I think the grenade kit stands out as very powerful because , compared to the other engineer damage options, it IS.
However, compared to the damage other classes can bring, it is nothing special.

Ah but virtues are not random.
You know exactly what you’ll get when you activate them making skillful usage possible – unlike the elixirs.
As i said, if you get the traits for the elixirs to give might / remove conditions then they become predictable to some extend – but at that point they basically all do the same.
The traits should improve the skills not define them.

I fully agree that the randomness needs to go.
As it is it’s impossible to skillfully use thrown elixirs for their boons / effects.
With traits you can reliably add condition removal / might to them but at that point they might as well all be the same if you use them for these effects only.

Personally i think that elixir B is the worst offender.
You never know what you might get … offensive buff, defensive buff, utility buff? Who knows!
It’s simply not possible to judge when the right moment is to use them because you never know what they’ll do.

Here’s another thing.
Skill #1 (or any other cone attack for that matter) misses almost every time when you attack something slightly above you (Someone standing on a small hill in front of you etc.)

These are all terrible. Grenades are purposefully given extra punch BECAUSE you manually target them. There’s no constructive way to approach an issue that doesn’t exist. OP just needs to L2P and there’s really no other answer.

Difficult seems like an accurate word to describe using them. Oftentimes I would benefit from being able to angle my camera differently while simultaneously wanting to throw a grenade. Currently you can’t do this.

I suppose it depends on your interpretation of the word difficult, haha.

I meant to say :
Understanding how to use them and using them is not difficult in itself.
What could be considered ‘difficult’ is using them effectively without hurting your hands.

It’s got a decent skill set, the damage is decent too.
It’s decent overall but personally … I just don’t see any reason to use it.
As engineers we don’t really want to stand there in melee and get hit in the face.

Grenades are good but i have to say it’s a bit tedious to use them.
Normally i’d like to see some sort of smart-targeting that uses the grenades on your target if you have one and gives you a targeting thing if you don’t have one.
However i don’t think that would work with the passive targeting we have right now.

It’s not difficult to use them its just a quality of life issue right there.

Personally i think the rifle should be turned into a proper long range weapon.
The current rifle skills should be moved into a “shotgun” weapon kit.
Let’s face it – apart from grenades (which are a bit tedious but good) – we don’t have a real long range option.
Considering how comparatively squishy we are , this seems like a bit of a problem to me.

Yeah, you’re making the engineer work – Good on you! (No sarcasm here, please don’t take it as such).
The problem imo is that you need to put so much effort into it to make it work.
The things you achieve with all the switching, CCing etc. other classes can do with a few buttons.
Some people will without a doubt argue that this fiddlyness (I think i might be making up words here) is the flavor – the style of the Engineer. Personally i can’t agree with that.

Actually, something very similar just happened to me.
I’m also missing my items after the purchase!

While this is true (not only for grenades but also bombs), i would like to actually have all options be viable (we’re talking PvE here).
Why can’t the other things we have be good too?
Why do i have to use either grenades or bombs?

Yeah you can kill things with your normal weapons but it’s arguably much slower and more tedious.
Then we have the Flamethrower for example.
The latest change helped a bit but it’s still got problems.
Let’s not even start with things like the toolkit.

I think the problem is that we need to put so much more effort into the class just to get to the same level of viability other classes are at normally.
If you’re a good player you’ll be able to make the engineer work reasonably well – But if you were playing another class, say warrior, with that skill you’d be more than just “reasonably” good.

Just because you can make this class work decently with effort doesn’t mean that it’s actually balanced.

Edit: The class is also plagued with a good amount of bugs which doesn’t really help it.

Yep. But unlike here , you can actually reuse it.

All you have to do is use transmutation stones once you find a new piece of gear.

Which you either need to buy or find.
The latter will not last any significant amount of time.
