Yes the Dragon Huggers will wipe the floor with us.
The true shot is massive damage in one shot. Our RF is 10 shots that usually don’t land even half of them.
Bouncing arrows + cripple + 10% dmg in crippled + 10% damage when more than 600 units + Fire CC… Mmm… Something does not really fit here with we compare it to the poor ranger and its minion, i mean pet.
1200 to 1500 is not that big of step. 300 units is almost a range for a melee weapon.

I play guardian as well and i can say: the traps looks amazing but the guard has better mobility with meditations. So hope for medi-guards with longbow, that can pop up anywhere in the map and pewpew you with one shot.
So i’ll became a Dragon Hugger and be the nightmare of any fellow mates.

I was thinking bout deflecting shot in your face everytime rapid fire is up, will it destroy all arrows or just 1? nobody knows maybe but if it’s all then we are totally screwed trying to use longbow against them.

Since it’s a skill shot, it’s likely all projectiles that it crosses while traveling will be destroyed. I think projectile heavy builds like the longbow ranger are going to see some increased counterplay with the expansion and revamped trait system. For example, Mesmer is getting some improvement to their projectile reflect trait (on dodge instead of Distortion), making reflection more accesible for them, and the Tides of Time shield skill will block projectiles during its travel from and back to the caster. Speaking of traveling walls that block projectiles, let’s also not forget that the Revenant too gets a projectile blocking wall on their hammer that they can send forward by pressing the skill button a second time.

Puncture Shot. How often are there 2 targets in line? Not very often. I much rather have extra damage at max range.

True Shot. I don’t think it’s fair to compare it with Maul. Compare it with Rapid Fire. I much rather have Rapid Fire.

Deflecting Shot. A projectile that destroys projectiles? Really? Are you even serious? Give me Hunter’s Shot any day.

Symbol of Energy. Ok this is pretty excellent, but it’s another ground-targetted skill. Maybe I rather have Point Blank Shot though.

Hunter’s Ward. Ok this thing is just way better than Barrage, but at least it has a crazy long cooldown.

Ranger gets 1500 range, which is far superior to 1200 range. Maybe their arrows will again be side-stepable. Ranger arrows won’t.

Their traps are just way superior to ours in every way except the cooldown. I rather have all the power in a single trap than in several traps over time.

Do take into account that they’re marketing their expansion. They need to impress or people won’t buy it. But just play Dragon Hunter if you prefer it. They just made a petless Ranger with heavy armor. It can’t be seen as anything but good if you think this is the embodiment of everything Rangers have been asking for over the years.

Puncture Shot: They don’t need to be in a line; one needs to stand behind another. If one diagnoly behind the other, it will bounce. The main criteria is that one is behind the other for the projectile to bounce. Just think of it like SB auto attack on thief.

True Shot: I wouldn’t compare it with anything, tbh. It should stand on its own, which it does. People compare 100blades and RF a lot too, but the reasoning is just as flawed, because the skills differ too much from each other.

Deflecting Shot: The theme of the expansion seems to be anti-projectile thusfar, if the skills we’ve seen thusfar on the elite specs and the Revenant are any indication.

People are getting way too hung up on this whole name business… Isn’t what it does a lot more important than what it’s called? To be honest, they could’ve called it the Whippersnapper and I still would’ve liked it, simply because they value (for me, at least) lies in the mechanics ten million times more than the name. Didn’t see people complain as much it became known that Ranger’s would be Druid, which I think sounds way more generic and boring than Dragon Hunter. xD

But yea, every lb ranger says now: No its not op, we only have tons of stabilty, condition immune, our heal isn’t good, too. Ah our damage with 5 k autoattacks needs a buff yes. And the better version of endure pain isnt that good…..

Yeah, because they’re right in saying that it’s not OP. And half the things your listing just show how little you actually know about the build, or even the ranger class as a whole. “Tons of stability” means they run either Rampage as One and/or Signet of the Wild, both of which have pretty lengthy cooldowns. Most don’t even run RaO due it’s lengthy cooldown (120 sec) and the fact that the only real useful thing it provides is the stability. Fury and swiftness the standard glassbow can get for 9 sec just by swapping weapons. Pretty weak for an elite with a two minute cd and Entangle is favored by myself and many other because it’s on a shorter cooldown and offers some aditional control with the immobilize, either to set up a burst or control someone managing to get close. However, it’s extremely buggy and the root breaks on stealth right now for some unknown reason. Signet of the Wild also provides a 25% damage increase for 8 seconds, but on the flip side you’d have to give up a utility slot that could have been used for something that could give you more survivability. Plus, having the 25% dmg increase only every 48~60 seconds isn’t really worth the loss in survivability.

Glassbow is by no means condi immune. If they run the Survival of the Fittest version, they can remove 2 conditions each time they use a Survival utility or elite skill. Considering Signet of Stone is pretty much mandatory for most ranger builds these days, that means they can remove up to six conditions in one go, after which most their survivability skills are on cooldown, leaving them pretty much kittened if the opponent decides to move in on them or comes with a spike of any sort. This version of glassbow also crits less often and less hard, because they go 6 points into the vitality/boon duration trait line instead of putting them into the precision/ferocity line, like the standard build does, also meaning they don’t have the cd reduction trait for the longbow.

The other condition removal option is Signet of Renewel, which I myself run as my only source of condi counter. It removes one condi every 10 seconds passively. The activate makes all the conditions currently on myself transfer to my pet (if it’s not dead). With Signet cooldown reduction it’s still a pretty lengthy cooldown, sitting on 48 seconds, during which the passive doesn’t work, so that’s plenty of time to have another condi spike up again.

The AA doesn’t hit 5k unless you’re wearing no armor at all with a zerker build or you’re in WvW with a glass build, which they don’t balance the game around much anyway, with gear, food and other such modifiers allowing for much more extreme stats than SPvP. On another zerker a normal AA with LB can crit around 3k, at best. If you got hit by 5k damage at once, it means both the fire and lightning sigils procced at the same time. That’s your 5k total, not the AA by itself. But, honestly, if a zerker is complaining about being outplayed by another zerker, they should just roll something more tanky. Don’t see my crying about thieves taking between a third and half my HP bar from a single backstab. It’s just the risk/reward factor of glassy builds.

Signet of Stone is slightly better than Endure Pain in that it lasts two seconds longer (unless warrior traits stance increase for 1 extra second), but it’s also on a longer cooldown by comparison. Endure Pain is 60 seconds, while Signet of Stone is 80. With Signet cd reduction it’s 64 seconds, but you have to trait for that. So, let’s say warrior traits for that extra second on EP and ranger traits for 20% off signet cooldowns, that would make EP last 5 sec at a 60 sec cd and SoS last 6 sec at a 64 sec cd. So, basically, the difference is nearly non-existant.

Honestly, guys, if you’re gonna exaggerate and talk crap about something, at least do your research beforehand. It’s almost embarrassing to see how little people actually seem to know about what they’re crying about when they start crying about it on the forums.

rangers are no free kills whatsoever….regardless of what class you play, you may wanna step out of hotjoin for a more clear and realistic point of view, rangers are broken OP and have hands down the best survivabilty and dps…. and it needs be toned quite badly

You should take a moment to read more clearly what I wrote before trying to give me lip about it. I said they were free kills in the past, before the longbow buff. I think you’re the one who needs to step out of hotjoin and actually learn how to play. I’ve played glassbow for a long while and know exactly how easy it is to counter and beat into the ground. Hell, I jumped onto my double ranged shatter mesmer some time ago just for a laugh and just had to swap out one single trait (Masterfull Reflection instead of Compounding Power) to completely counter any glassbow that came across my path. It’s even easier if you’re thief, both as d/p and s/d builds. So that’s already two of the main zerker classes in the current meta I can beat my own build on. I haven’t played medi guard that much, but even that can counter glassbow.

Ranger has been nerfed time and again since beta. From shortbow “animation fixes” to spirits, multiple times, and many other things; it’s recieved many nerfs without any real buffs before longbow last year. It was at the bottom of the foodchain for a long time, were pretty much a free kill for any other class, and now that it’s in a decent, read DECENT, place, haters want it nerfed again, either because they’re too unskilled to fight, or learn to fight, a class that isn’t even able to compete with most of the other classes in the top tier play, or just because they want their free kills back. Either way, I think it’s sad people have this stance towards Rangers, whom still suffer many problems (even their own class mechanic!) so long after game release.

They briefly mentioned it once chat began spamming for a response. The long range will remain, but they didn’t explain any further how. Many suspect they’ll be making it baseline, much like they’re going to do with the projectile velocity from Read the Wind.

Been a while since I’ve been on the forums. I see the longbow hate is still real.

The ability itself is fine. What isnt fine is its ridiculous range. All the rangers just say omg just L2P you scrub. There is no counterplay to a ranger sitting on top a ledge where you cant reach him and doing 8k damage with 1 ability. Why are people even comparing unload or warrior rifle to rapid fire they are completely different when you have to be almost in someones face to channel them.

Seriously though, the counterplay is called gap closers. Especially thief can easily close the maximum range in two seconds or less by just chaining Infiltraitor’s Signet and Steal together — a tactic I’ve often used when occasionally playing d/p thief. It has an effective range of 1800, so enough to be right up in a longbow ranger’s face.

And if they’re up on a ledge, you should be able to reach them. If the ledge was unreachable, the ranger wouldn’t have been able to get on there themselves, either. Sounds more like you’re trying to find issue with people who use positioning to their advantage and the fact that longbow rangers have the most range in the game. This is Guild Wars 2, not Melee Wars 2.

I, for one, am glad something like longbow ranger exists. I’m not surprised by how much hate it gets though. People always kitten on ranged classes/specs in MMO’s, usually because they prefer melee themselves while not being very good at it and/or think it’s “unfair” that their ranged opponent can start doing damage while still being at a relatively safe distance.

Cant download/login after patch of 4-1-15

Having a similar issue since they introduced the latest patch. When I boot up the client it just keeps displaying the message “Connection error(s) detected. Retrying…”

Edit: Never mind. I figured it out. For some reason there was an ip adress in the destination of my shortcut and that was causing the issue.

So you’re playing LB/GS ranger, but you’re not zerker? Then you say that your tank warrior puts out more damage? Seems to me that you haven’t build your ranger properly, then. IMO longbow works best on a full glass Read the Wind build. It just doesn’t seem viable enough for a cele or more tanky spec, since it’s basically just a straight up damage weapon and all the traits that boost it are in the power and precision traitlines (for a reason).

Rampage as One and Entangle are good as well.

Entangle could use some bug fixes though. From what I’ve been seeing and hearing it cleanses/stops applying ticks of bleed and immobilize if the the target goes into stealth, and its hit detection can be dodgy — especially on uneven terrain.

Other than that, it’s a very good controll elite for both power and condi specs.

A direct response from a member of the PvP and Balance QA team, made a year ago, stating channeled ranged targetted skills (such as RF) track through stealth if cast before the target goes into stealth. He doesn’t state that this is a bug or something of that nature, clearly showing us that this mechanic is working as intended.

Let’s face it: it’s not going to be changed. There’s simply not enough valid reason to — not then and not now. You’ll just have to live with it, like the rest of us.

From Arena net evidence channel description: Guardian, Warrior, Engineer, Thief, Elementalist and Mesmer have channel skill, so why only Ranger channel is only one that track, fire and attack through stealth?

Thank you for once again showing how little you know about the most basic mechanics in this game. This is another shining example of why balance decisions shouldn’t be made around players at a very low skill level.

So i am low skill player and no ranger with high skill can show evidence of where in Arena net ranger class description of ranger arrow track stealth stealth and attack through stealth??

If you queue up attacks prior to the player stealthing, they will still land. Ranged attacks that is.

Dunno if u ever watched/played high bracket pvp but thief is only usable as cap or +1 because of poor design of many mechanics involving stealth/initiative everyone who at least know what thief can do can outplay him
Also funny that stealth interrupting channel skills (not only rapid fire ) is too op but kittened skills with 3-6 100% immunity to dmg is ok , also i do understand that ranger was up and now finally got some love , but saying that thief is op in spvp is literally not playing him or l2p issue

It’s hard to compare stealth on a thief, which has virtually no hard cooldown aside from revealed on both the d/p and s/d meta builds as weapon skills to immunities with cooldowns of a whole minute or more. Plus, each utility provides only immunity from one damage type; either direct damage or condition damage. It’s a panic button with a relatively long cooldown compared the duration of the skill. Stealth, however, can be employed by the thief as long as there is initiative to spend.

Trapper runes not working

The server delay might have some role in it. There’s already a delay in place between putting the trap down and the rune effects activating, so it might be possible that it occasionally gets lost in the server lag. I’m no tech expert though, so I’m just making a wild guess.

People will keep requesting nerfs, mainly because they’d rather moan and cry than learn and adapt. After all, the latter requires them to actually think and work for it. I find it funny that they want to nerf a class so badly that’s not even anywhere near the current top tier of play. It’s probably because they want their “free kill” back. Ranger is, after a long time, now in a decent place in the meta and bad players can’t handle that. Like I said, they’d rather moan and cry than l2p. That’s how bad players stay bad.

Uuuuurrggh… Again with this? I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: stealth is already an incredibly powerful crutch and tool to disengage, reposition, and reset fights with. If you choose to go into stealth in the middle of rapid fire or some other target locked channeled skill, that’s your own fault. Use LoS and dodge rolls to counter RF, not stealth. Stealth is not and should not be the answer to all problems, otherwise it’s too strong, especially on a class like thief, which has so much easy on demand access to it.

That being said, I think power ranger is VERY good vs certain comps even if they have a d/p thief because it can counter that weapon set with interrupts very easily. S/d is a different story, since it is really hard for a power ranger to lock down and necro is also very hard to kill because of plague.

Agreed, especially on the s/d thief part. I’ve encountered two very good s/d thieves the last week and they both just completely countered me with all the evades. It’s extremely hard to get a CC in when they’re evading and teleporting so much.

I was amazed at the parkour on Kyhlo, jumping onto the roof of a house on the side and then with the help of his GS he launched himself right onto the elevated section on the outskirts of a side node. The shoutcasters were equally impressed.

Might want to look into your recording software if it’s just the fps on the recordings themselves that are choppy. Perhaps you just have to fine tune your settings.

Running sword and dagger with such vitality and toughness stats you could, potentially/tentatively call yourself an evasion stealth tank of sorts, since you can rely on three different evade skills on both your weapon sets combined, as well as the stealth on trap placement, to make yourself a hard target to pin down and bring down. On top of that, you have increased endurance regen and protection on dodge, only further increasing survivability. The downside, of course, is the lack of stun breakers and any sort of active condi clearing.

Fix Rangers

What I don’t see posters here discussing is the effect these Power Rangers have on the legitimacy of GW2 PvP. If ANet is still serious about making this game a legitimate Esport, do you really want such a mechanically simple yet effective build being so popular?

I would imagine that you would want to encourage builds that are more difficult to play so that even non-players can be impressed (like with me and Starcraft) by what is happening. However, if they tune in and see a guy sitting a mile away doing nothing but pressing his 1 and 2 skills for long periods for time…not really exciting.

Honestly, I would rather see LB skill 2 be changed to something like GW1 Savage Shot or Distracting Shot. Skills like these require skill to be effective, and would even make builds using Moment of Clarity more appealing. You could do something really cool like have have the interrupt activate before the damage, so you get bonus damage for the interrupt via the skill and the trait.

In my opinion most of the current meta builds are, as you say, “mechanically simple yet effective.” I’d be all for more reliance on more skillfull play in the game, but the problem extends further than just power ranger.

Here’s one I see a lot of people doing:

Wiping on the same point nonstop.
I’ve seen people push a point with three or even four of our team (usually mid or close) and wipe completely. Then, on respawn, they head right back to that point and die again. And again. Aaaaand again. Often they trickle in one by one, creating this shooting galery situation for the opposite team, as the respawned player will come onto a point and be instagibbed because he’s up against three other players and his allies are either downed, dead or smart enough to have gone to a point less occupied by opponents.

And…

Pushing the third point when you already have the other two.
Mostly when you just wiped the enemy team. I’ve seen complete reserversals just because 2-3 of my team thought it would be a good idea to push far after we just wiped most, if not all, of the enemy team on mid or close. A fast decap and retreat is fine, but they just stay there and then get wiped in a 4/5 vs 2/3, leaving a big opening for the enemy team to at least retake mid without much trouble, since now my team is the one with 2/3 people waiting for respawn. Basically being too greedy can lose you the advantage you had.

The build can be strong on the Foefire and Khylo midpoints because they can use the verticality there to their advantage. That’s not broken; that’s just smart play and can be used by several professions with access to range. I’ve done it plenty on mesmer with the same sort or result. Speaking of which, mesmer and thief can act strongly on those points, as well, using their teleports. They can teleport straight onto the roof on Khylo from mid capture point itself or from the sides outside, for example, enabling them to completely disengage from professions with no similar access to teleports.

Being bursted down by Rapid Fire when you’re locked down in a team fight is no different then if you get backstabbed by a thief while locked down in a team fight. Or a shatter mesmer. What’s your point? You don’t like burst? You don’t like team fights? There’s dueling servers if you want to 1v1.

If you say a single RF “one shots” you, then you must be playing glass on your necro. I suggest you watch Hollts play on Youtube or on his newly setup Twitch channel. He plays power necro too and has shown to be quite proficiant with it, even against “OP” LB rangers.

I recall Powerr explaining the increased range for Mesmer GS back before leaving the QA department by saying that ALL skills have an additional 18-20% (I don’t recall the actual percentage) range added in order to help the game properly calculate damage from sources that can have error (due to being an MMO). This isn’t a bug but intended behavior. However, the added distance does seem to be a problem on the longest distance skills, which get extended the most.

If I recall correctly, it’s been said that the extra range acts as a buffer for any lag that might be experienced during play.

OP longbow and immobilization makes the ranger a faceroll class.

ranger’s longbow is the easiest weapon to counter in the game, they don’t have an immobilization outside of a 600 meter radius(at which point they’re hitting so low with a bow that you could afk the damage), the only thing a ranger can faceroll with a longbow is a really, really bad/inexperienced player

even with “extra range”, that ranger is not a threat to anyone with a functioning brain

Indeed. Four of the five longbow skills are projectile finishers, so anything that reflects or absorbs projectiles counters them hard, forcing them to either swap to melee or wait out the effect, during which they’d be completely on the defensive.

@OP: While I’m always happy to see more rangers posting videos, I have to agree with some of the above posters that you’re not very good. Here are two things, in addition to what has already been mentioned by Prysin, that you should work on for your PvP prowess:

- Movement:
Movement is an important aspect in many MMO’s and this goes doubly so Guild Wars 2. Backpeddling is an absolute no no. If you walk backwards, you are moving at a much, much slower pace than if you were going forward or sideways. Forget that silly S key (unbind it if it’s too hard to unlearn normally) and teach yourself to strafe instead.

- Keybindings:
Even if I couldn’t see your mouse due to the recording program you use, I could tell you were a clicker. Clicking is and always will be slower than a propper keybind, so bind your skills in such a manner that you can hit them on your keyboard without even having to look.

Yeah, though it’s mainly melee pets that have an unreliable hit-rate in PvP. Because even their auto attack has a cast-time that requires them to stand still, it’s hard for them to hit constantly moving targets, such as other players. Abilities such as leaps and other pet skills with a bit more range are more reliable. For reliable sustained damage a ranged pet is probably the best option. That’s mainly why I use a spider as my second pet.

It could be possible when you consider the fact that some professions might be getting a fifth class mechanic ability (F5). Perhaps for Druids the pets get a second activate ability. All purely speculation, of course.

I use AMD. Got a 7870, to be precise. OBS works fine now that I’ve managed to get Quicksync working, using some online guides, and it records at good quality without making huge files. Fraps works fine too, but it creates massive files when compared to other recording software (nearly 50GB for one ten minute round of PvP, holy kitten).

I often use it to create area of denial situations on a cap or choke point. Only foolish or really tanky opponents keep standing in it, because the damage can tick pretty hard if they decide to eat it.

Like Aomine mentions, it’s also good when an enemy thief’s Shadow Refuge goes up.

The build I used.

So I managed to get OBS setup properly for recording thanks to some help from a guildy, after weeks of frustration trying out other recording programs. I really want to improve my editing skills, so this will be the first of many videos, especially since I’ve been lazy in the media tomfoolery department for a while now.

This is a short montage made up out of clips I recorded during two/three matches while soloQ-ing in ranked while testing out OBS. It’s not my best play by any means, but I really wanted to get back into video editing.

Also, if you guys have any recommendations for music, that would be greatly appreciated. I’m mainly into rock, which isn’t the best choice when it comes to PvP videos, IMO.

The thing with power longbow, in my opinion, is that it works best as glass. I’ve tried various setups, both meta and of my own design. The 626 version feels the weakest to me, as that little bit of extra toughness is not worth what you’re giving up for it in return when compared to what the other trait variations can give you.

The Survival of the Fittest version I easily find is the most “beginner friendly,” due to the extra vitality, good active condi cleansing, and easy Poison and Blindness purge via Evasive Purity. On top of that, SotF gives you Fury whenever you use a Survival skill, so if you take Muddy Terrain as the third utility skill, you’ll have good uptime on that boon to boost the lack of points into the Skirmishing traitline.

If you really, really want something with a lot of toughness though, I’d say you’re better of playing a condition build on your ranger, as they generally run Rabid or Settler amulet, which stack tougness, and must go 6 points into Wilderness Survival.

PTV (Power, Toughness, Vitality) I don’t see working out very well for a longbow spec in PvP, seeing as it just can’t deliver the same kind of pressure as a glassy longbow ranger.

I play longbow ranger. The other day I Hunter Shot myself into stealth and about half a second later I get Moa’d by the enemy mesmer, despite being in stealth, because he had begun his cast before I had entered stealth. Is it annoying? Possibly. Should it be “fixed?” No. Stealth is already an extremely powerful tool and crutch. It doesn’t break on a blocked or evaded attack and serves as a great disengagement tool.

Pet attack speed

Open your pet pannel and hover over the left most skill displayed of the four skills they have. That should be the auto attack (unless I’m mistaken). I believe generally melee pets have a casttime of 1/2 second on their AA, while ranged pets like spiders and devourers have a 3/4 second casttime.

Hey guys, i have another doubt

Is shortbow a viable condi weapon, in any build? Or the best setup for condi ranger is axe/dagger and sword/torch?

In my experience shortbow works better if you want better sustained bleeds and/or if you want to do a spike bleed setup (Entangle + close range Poison Volley and Splitblade to proc Sharpened Edges up to 10 times + Geomancy Sigil). Sword/Torch + Axe/Dagger works better if you like chaining evades a lot while striking them with poisons and letting your fire field on torch #5 do its magic on point. Good against melee heavy builds. Shortbow works a bit better when going against ranged opponents or those that run away a lot.

Trapper good for stronghold defense?

Unless they introduce the Rune of the Trapper to PvP, I fear other existing builds will still overshadow the trapper ranger. Seeing as channeling of supplies can only interrupted by a CC (knockback, stun, though immobilize seems to count too), a full on trapper isn’t going to be of more use for this than say a longbow ranger. Spike trap, when traited, applies a one second immobilize, but that’s still on a longer cooldown than say PBS on the longbow.

Trapper might find a role on the defence lane to help kill attacking NPC’s with the aoe’s of the traps, but the long cooldowns might make them weaker than a staff ele. However, the Druid specialization with the staff might make for a good aoe weapon to help support a trapper build, probably best combined with x/torch as its second set.

Also 5 skills should work as intended. LB#3 is broken for the following reasons:

It has to hit.

Most of the times if you are moving when shoot the stealth is lost. Don’t kitten me why, you simply get out of it almost right away. You any get a glimpse of the effect.

Even if you get invisible your pet will follow you. So your enemies will know here you are anyway.

I have this sometimes too. I don’t use piercing arrows, so it can’t be that, but every now and then when I use #3 it does seem to hit, but the stealth breaks pretty much immediatly… or rather, it feels like it never applied, because I didn’t see my character go into stealth. However, I still get the revealed debuff, so that kind of leaves me confused when it happens.

It doesn’t happen very often, but it’s one of those things you do notice when it happens.
