What if they implimented those items as a list of skins to apply? Much the way your titles are already in a list and easily changeable? This would only affect the asthetics of it, and would certainly allow people to see that you may be on a level 10 warrior, but you have a character that has completed X set of events.

Such a great GIF, it’s how I felt about WoW with a lot of stuff near the end, haha.

A more on-topic note, I would like a little UI customization. At the very least I’d like to scale some of the features, I don’t really need the button bar to be so large, lol.

Hearts are too cute and kiddy to use in some areas. A compromise would be to use a broken heart symbol or a bleeding Heart symbol in those areas.

This game is too cheerful even in some lower level areas.

I find the game to be pretty well balanced in the terms of cute and not cute. There isn’t much dark and brooding and horror, but I don’t think that’s the vibe they’re going for, really.

Events, we knew from the start of the game, would be growing and changing. These things are not expected to be different, and as long as you show up and kill things in the big orange circle you’re mostly okay there, lol. The heart quests should be a constant for those that need consistency.

Nah, it needs to be consistent so you know what you’re looking for. While many players would be able to figure it out or pay attention and take note, there are plenty that would be confused by the different symbols.

Well, it’s nice to start with what you already have, then you can add or remove elements to see what that would change.

Difference of opinion, I suppose. I would rather have A-Net just build an API that I can use myself. A character builder app would do me more good than a secondary password for a third-party site.

I would think that you could have chosen a different way to word and order your original post, then. I’ll be honest, I see the point you’re making. However, every game needs something that is static and you can fall back on. What if you’re on a low-pop server during non-peak hours and there were no hearts, but a bunch of events? And because of RNG and the number of events added, you needed about four people to complete said event successfully? You’d be stuck in a zone unable to do anything until you watched all the events fail and generate new ones. Having static quest-mechanics is important.

Could they alter the overall system a little? Sure. Also you may not be considering a couple of other things: 1 The nature of some of the hearts. There are hearts that require you to feed animals and check traps, that kind of stuff has to happen. You can’t feed a cow in Queensdale today and it not be hungry again tomorrow. 2 Doubling back to help friends. My fiance is about 15-20 levels behind me as she started after me and has less time to play. I like being able to still see some of the aspects of the hearts (like the traps I checked and the wurm holes I stomped) in order to jump in and help her out. If I cleared all the spiders from an apple grove and then I could see said spiders later, I would be unable to help her. This kind of quest phasing is what made things difficult for players in World of Warcraft to double back and help a friend.

It’s an all around decent idea, but there are more implications than just the changing world they’re trying to create. I think we need the static quests, just make them all quests that bare repeating due to their nature, and don’t phase them out to me once I’ve completed them.

I mean, if you have a character that you’re wanting to look a certain way under 80, I suppose it’s cool. But right now I’m pushing so hard to 80 on my main (I only picked up the game this month) that I don’t have time to care what he looks like beyond changing dyes. Once I’m 80, I’ll want the style to match the color scheme to match the race/profession to match my playstyle. I’m just not to that point yet, and I would love a way to convert the unused 79 and under tokens.

One of the great things about GW2 is that nobody can look me up or inspect me or see my build unless I post it somewhere. Another one is that there’s no way to track hard numbers on DPS and Threat. That means you can’t flame me if you don’t like the way that I have my character set up – not that I’d listen, it just normally makes me fill up an ignore list really fast. It is a better environment because I can’t see you and you can’t see me, if it comes down to inspecting people and telling them how to play or they can’t go on a run of some sort then I’ll be leaving this game behind.

Wanted: Healing Class

in Suggestions

Posted by: LeeroyNimoy.1864

LeeroyNimoy.1864

A big part of this game is more about avoiding or negating damage vs out healing it. Consider shifting how you play If you want to play other trait lines.

Yes! Thank you, this whole game is built around changing what we know to be true and “required” in a Fantasy MMO. This is a whole new game, play it as such, please.

you’d have to completely revamp the entire game to add an effective healer to the game, it’d completely change it away from what many of us bought the game for in the first place. AND you’d need to add tanks, because healers would trivialise any content that didn’t hit like a truck.

It wouldn’t be gw2 anymore, so NO thanks.

Another finely-tuned mind that understands the need to leave this different. Guild Wars is trying to leave the need for the Holy Trinity behind. They left in the game professions with the potential to heal, but not with the expressed purpose. There is no dodge or evasion stat, it’s all about you playing the game and making the move yourself. It’s live gameplay, no dice-rolls, actively fighting and doging. If we are given Healers, we’ll need Tanks (as stated above); if we are given Tanks, they’ll need dodge- and parry-styled stats. Half the reason I’m playing GW2 is because it doesn’t have those things. Adding them back in will push away the players that understand it’s kittened to have a tank taking all the damage when that mob should realistically be attacking the glass cannons or the healers.

This game is a great step in the right direction, let’s not screw it up, please?

Remove Renown Hearts

Seeing as probably half the hearts can be completed by doing the events that spawn around them, I see no reason to remove them. I don’t find them repetitive at all, in fact I view them as a refreshing change from the normal MMO quest system. It’s not the end of the line for advancement in this field, but it’s a great first step for all fantasy MMOs. And something does change, that heart-NPC becomes a Karma Vendor (which is useful when finding someone to sell junk to!). Also, some of them help you along in your Charm/Dignity/Ferocity meters . . . there are things changing and things that make them worth keeping around.

Maybe instead of that, the secondary ability of the turret (F1) could be to overcharge it. Knocking back and doing damage based on how close to the initial blast enemies were?

A client for Linux

in Suggestions

Posted by: LeeroyNimoy.1864

LeeroyNimoy.1864

I’ll start by being honest, I stopped reading after the third or forth page, but I can say that Linux can’t be that far off. Mac clients and Linux clients both use OpenGL, so porting isn’t impossible, by any stretch of the imagination. In the meantime, if you’re needing to play on Linux, I have a friend who said that the Windows client works fine via WINE on the Play on Linux software.

The problem is, the Mac client uses Cider. Cider is a proprietary Wine fork-based (from the days of yore when Wine was MIT licensed) wrapper that only runs on OS X. Even if the current OS X client gets “ported” to Linux, it will still be a wrapped Windows version, which is better than nothing, but isn’t really good, especially with all the bugs that are already present in the OS X client.

I play on a custom-built Win7 gaming rig, so I can’t speak personally on the following accounts, but I do have direct knowledge of them from the people I play games with. My fiance is running the Mac Beta without any issues – so far, I’m not entirely sure what kind of issues I’m looking for anyway. Now it could be that her particular machine has the ideal specs to make it work, it could be that we’re really lucky. As for Linux, like I stated above, another friend of mine has had success with logging into the Play on Linux WINE program on his machine at work (he’s a system admin somewhere, so he can get away with that and I’m jealous). He says it can be a bit laggy, so you wouldn’t want to do world boss fights, but he’s able to handle most of the Champ Zerg in Queensdale and he can run around filling hearts and farming mats just fine. A more gaming-centric machine running Linux might have even more success, since his is technically not meant to run high graphic software.

I realize these are, by no means, ultimately answers, but they are at least a sort of stop-loss for a short while.

They aren’t getting rid of the Holy Trinity, at least that’s not how I understand the desire of current devs. From what I read into it, they want to make it so you aren’t stuck if you don’t have the Holy Trinity. Something WoW had achieved on accident and then did away with when they changed the way their class mechanics and talent systems worked (I used to have a Rogue that could tank at-level heroics and off tank at-level raid bosses thanks to an awkward build I made). I think having things like Guardians and the handful of Necro abilities that do some AoE heals, we have what will suffice as a happy medium for the time being. Later down the road other games will impliment better and more complex AI systems that allow for more variants, but it all boils down to a more realistic style of gameplay and tactics – or at least the attempt therein.

So, I think by going away from a healer class all together we’ve lost build creativity.

And you know what? You thought wrong. Completely wrong.

Everyone is running the same build is because AI is terrible and exploitable. It is designed so that control and support are completely useless. Everything is balanced around dodges.

You don’t need to bring immobilization, or cripple. You don’t need to bring interrupts.

Agreed, utility AI is what we need. I like the idea of losing the MMO Holy Trinity, but I feel like they went about it a little weakly here. All-in-all a great game, and this one thing won’t cause me to stop playing, but it could have been done better. EverQuest Next is using a couple of AI companies known for very intense programming and coding; AI that changes tactics as you do and based on your group makeup. Hopefully we’ll see it there and then it’ll become the industry standard.

I’ll be honest, there are a few times I’ve wanted a mount. However, on the whole I think it’s better that we don’t have all that.

Guild hall and personal housing

I think they need to keep certain aspects of it restricted, narrow it down to around 10-15 locations within the game world. From there allow you to pick from about 20 different base designs. This would keep their work down while making sure that there’s enough variety that the guild halls don’t all look alike. Then, they could possibly have some selections of add-ons for the main hall building. These would need to be kept to about six to ten different things, again to keep their work load small while maintaining choices for us.

Initially, I think they can be just instanced areas for us to hang out, I see no need to impliment the guild hall into the WvW or PvP aspects of the game, just yet. Keeping them separate from the living world would ensure that you always have a home to go to. As for the crafting tables, I had only meant that we don’t need all of them in the player housing aspect of the game – if something like that were to be included also.

Selectable Sigil and Rune slots.

It would also corrupt the market (economy) on those less-used sigils . . . on all sigils, actually. It would undermine certain amounts of individuality in the game. If everyone could always swap to the right sigil, then everyone would just stop combat and put up the Dredge Sigil all at once and burn through the content. It would make it so there are no choices in particular situations. It would essentially force your hand to only purchase certain sigils for certain weapons. I think the current system is fine, if you want the extra damage to Black Legion, get the potion from an Artificer and keep your +power or +crit % or whatever you use stat-wise.

So if I’m reading this right, you want to be able to have more than one sigil on each weapon and/or armor slot? Then, you want to be able to select which one you want of those two or three or four that you have stored on the singlepiece of gear whenever you want that one? You’re asking for these gear-enhancements to work like utility skills, effectively?

If that is what you’re saying, it’s way too overpowered.

A client for Linux

The engine is so needing a rewrite -very poor multithreading, anchored on an obsolete DirectX with lot of disadvantages-

Obsolete DirectX? Just how many PC games released are programed in OpenGL compared to DirectX? Other than Blizzard, ID Software, and some indie titles, Direct X is still king when making games? Obsolete? Hardly, not when nearly everyone and their dog is using Direct X for PC games.

The only issue is, OpenGL is easier to code in, and generally accepted as being cheaper. DirectX just has a corner on the market with Windows backing them, that’s the only reason they’re “king”. Linux is a more powerful OS than Windows, just not as user friendly or with all the added thrills, this is why people don’t port – that and most of them don’t understand what I just said above.

Guild hall and personal housing

Housing is a bonus, it’s purely asthedtic, in my mind. I don’t want a house that becomes a fort or a farm, I just want a place to call home. Someplace I can kick my boots off and call it a day. It should boild down to an RP aspect of this MMORPG, maybe a place to hang trophies (like some scale of some dragon you helped kill or something of the sort). Maybe it’s a place to drink with your friends, at most it should be able to house three profession stations of your choosing. If you want a different one, you can remove one and build a new one. This way it doesn’t feel OP and it doesn’t replace certain aspects of towns and cities, or aspects of the potential guild hall.

Wanted: Healing Class

With the mechanics put in place in GW2, a dedicated healing class just doesn’t make sense. I’m fairly self-sufficient on mose of the professions, and I certainly don’t feel like I need any full-on heals even when I’m not. Mostly, if I die, it’s because I was doing something stupid like not doging or not healing myself – or perhaps taking on far too many mobs over my level, lol. I think the better option would be to open up a little more utility so that each profession has access to at least two AoE heals. Maybe you can only have one active at a time, but give everyone the option and I think it’d be a great middle-ground.

There are other weapons that make a lot more sense than OH Swords. That really isn’t all that Thief-y, everyone just expects it because of WoW’s Rogues.

Agreed, I’d rather have a Sword MH and Axe OH than any Sword OH

Guild hall and personal housing

The mining and harvesting thing depends on the Guild’s input = output means that Guild’s that invest time and points in upgrading them should be able to harvest more. It’s the same thing like farming a lot as a single person.
Also you could create Guild halls in connection to WvW. E.g. a totally upgraded Guild Hall will allow you to instantly take a turrer/sige/outpost at a certain upgraded point. This would increase the interest of Guild claiming in WvW as well as the sustainability of capturing turrets for Guilds.

These things are where the larger guilds would have the advantage. If a small guild has all their members put three hours a week into it the return will be big for them, but a larger guild would have more people to put three hours into it. So it scales up and you gain exponentially per person working three hours a week. As for WvW stuff, the bigger guilds would hold better and take better. Now, obviously your smaller guilds probably won’t be in WvW without an alliance, but the point stands. If you’re in a larger guild, or at least representing one at that time, you’ll be on better ground.

The PvP/WvW stuff doesn’t bother me that much, but the resources would as an advocate of small guilds just trying to make it with their friends.

Guild hall and personal housing

Openeing too much creativity can be dangerous. Player-made content is the future of gaming, but I’m not sure it has a place in Guild Wars just yet. There needs to be limitations and restrictions placed on things so you can’t break the game at will (or on accident), as will most assuredly happen. I think that keeping as much of the housing and guild halls out of the gem store as possible would be a better way to keep people in the game. Personally I only spend X amount on games each month, and I don’t want to need to spend some of that on something easily managed as base content. Also, if there are certain advantages to having said content, it would bring about a feeling of pay-to-win, and then they’ll lose players.

Overall that majority of your thoughts aren’t bad, I think it may just be too wide-scoped for the Guild Wars genre and community.

I’m not sure I understand the bit about giving certain guilds an advantage. In my mind’s eye, when I see guild halls, I don’t see anything that would make one guild truly gain anything that the others can’t with work.

In World of Warcraft my guild consisted of me and three friends. We were able to max out our guild perks in about six months of playing and actively trying. The guild systems are a little more in dept with GW2, and I would expect Guild Halls to be difficult to obtain, but I don’t think making it inaccessible by the smaller guilds is a good move.

I see the guild hall as a place to gather and hang out, maybe install some cosmetic things like a bar and the sort. Adding the crafting tables (I think individually) and things would be kind of cool. Expanding the land around your hall to be able to get a mine is a cool idea, but could be exploitable if they aren’t careful with its design.

One last kind of new thought, at least for me, maybe offer a “rested XP” bonus for logging out in your represented guild’s hall. In order to get it the guild must first build the barracks addition to activate the buff.
