Elite Specializations & Hero Point Feedback [Merged]

The Hero Point requirement adjustment is a welcome and commendable step (big thanks to Colin and the gang!), but doesn’t address the other issues, such as locking Hero Challenges behind one-shot group-only content and high-level masteries.
That’s understandable, though, because changing them would/will require more time and testing than a blanket adjustment to the cost of elite specializations.
ArenaNet has a lot to do on all fronts, so I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for these other changes to be considered. I do hope, however, that the need for them won’t be forgotten, because these issues have a major effect on the player progression experience, and bear directly on the enjoyability of the game.

Any update about when ANet will change HoT according to all this feedback?
If history is any guide, probably a little over a year — assuming it is changed at all.

All i am seeing is a mob of anger spoiled children with a mob like mentality because everything isn’t handed to them for free within the first few days of launch… over a weekend… that the devs are working overtime to keep the servers stable.
That’s all you see because that’s all you want to see.
This thread does contain a lot of venting — including your own — but it is also filled with constructive criticism. Should you choose to read the thread, then you will see why posts like yours are, ironically enough, precisely the sort of thing you’re complaining about.
Most of posts in this thread are very specific about the problem with the current state of Elite Specializations and Hero Points, and many offer suggestions about how to improve them.
If you think these game elements are fine the way they are, great! But if you resent other players giving their honest feedback in a feedback thread, then attacking them for doing so puts you in direct opposition to the point of the thread and, to the extent it includes insults, the Guild Wars 2 Rules of Conduct as well.

Being forced to beg people to come help kill a champion doesn’t feel very heroic.
Wait, you mean there are people who can’t solo champions in this game? Oh wait, there are people who at level 80 can’t even kill a -veteran- mob…
Apparently, there are also people who can’t even kill a level 1 straw man, but like your post, that’s beside the point.
The point is that the current regime needs modification, and hopefully that point is getting across to the people who can do something about it.

I’m loving the expansion so far, but the lack of scaling for Hero Challenges is a real buzzkill.
Day 2 and I’m already having trouble finding people to help with Hero Challenges, which is not surprising since there is absolutely zero incentive for anyone to do them more than once.
Please make the Hero Challenge system sensible and sustainable, and please fix it soon, because it’s only get worse if you don’t.

The Heart Of The Matter
After spending way too much time exploring last night (and about six hours past when I intended to get to bed) my initial impression of HoT is: BLOWN AWAY.
ArenaNet has done a fantastic job, and overall, I like where the game is heading.
There’s a need for tuning, refinement and debugging, but that’s hardly unusual at launch, especially for something so ambitious.
It’s not hard to see plenty of negative feedback in the forums today (that’s hardly unusual, either) and though I am impressed with the experience so far, I do agree with some of the more well-substantiated complaints. It also remains to be seen how engaging and enjoyable the Heart of Maguuma will feel six months from now.
But the foundation HoT has laid down is solid, takes GW2 to the next level, so to speak, offers a lot of new things to explore and bodes well for future expansions.

You don’t have to “mash” your mouse button. You just hold it down!
A poor choice of words on my part.
I mean it would be nice not to have to hold the left mouse button down to continue autoattacks throughout every fight, and that the problem becomes particularly noticeable during long boss battles.
If a skill is set to automatically repeat normally, it should do the same when the Action Camera is active. If it has been toggled off (using Ctrl-Right-Click by default), then it should behave as it does now.

The Action Camera is AWESOME!
It’s now my default mode of play.
That said, I’m thinking it would be nice if autoattack didn’t require mashing the left mouse button all the time. It gets a bit much in boss fights.

Cursors, Foiled Again
I don’t hate tin foil.
Me neither. I do prefer aluminum foil, however, so I’m not sure where that puts me with respect to this Nexon business.
I’m thinking “not concerned” about sums it up.
I don’t agree with every decision ArenaNet has made, but so far, I haven’t seen them do anything that they haven’t credibly explained, and don’t think it necessary to theorize some sort of evil outside influence on them to rationalize their decisions. Regardless of who owns them, ArenaNet needs to be profitable, like every other non-government business, and will act accordingly.
It’s certainly likely that NCSOFT passes down some edicts from time to time (the nixing of the Cantha Quarter in Divinity’s Reach comes to mind), and we can assume that, in general, they pressure ArenaNet to make money.
But the potential of not being able to make payroll also pressures companies to make money, and it’s unlikely ArenaNet would do things much differently as an independent company — except probably sweat financing more than they have to now.
There’s nothing wrong with being interested in ArenaNet’s business dealings, because they do after all make the game we like to play, but in doing so, it’s important to stick to facts, minimize conjecture and maintain perspective.
Otherwise, we might accidentally figure out the world is secretly controlled by Beta Reticuloids or something.

A reasonable concern given the regrettable status quo in MMOs, but I think ArenaNet knows what to expect if they were to render store-purchased gathering tools obsolete.

Click Bait
Improving the interface to reduce absurd amounts of clicking isn’t rocket science, it’s computer science. Reducing GW2’s RSI impact on players is not outside ArenaNet’s technical capability, it just isn’t a priority.
They do listen to player feedback, but sometimes it can take years for changes to show up in the game, as in the case of the camera improvements, which were long overdue, but awesome once implemented.
I’m confident making stacks of items and materials less arduous to deal with is something ArenaNet can do, and do well, just as they already have with inventory management in general, which is the best of any game I’ve played.
They just need to know it’s important to us, so let’s please be sure to let them know — politely — at every opportunity.

I have 33 level 80 characters. Having played them all quite a bit, I enjoy each for what it brings to the experience. My favorite, by far, is Mesmer.
That said, I don’t recommend Mesmer as a first character, because figuring them out and leveling them up can be a royal pain in the kitten. Also, not everyone is into exploding clouds of lavender butterfiles, and I can totally respect that. My male Mesmers tend to wear tough-looking outfits with dark, macho colors to compensate.
Now that I’m approaching 5k hours played among all the professions, though, there’s no doubt that I can kick way more botox with my Mesmers (I have five) than with any of my other characters. Not even close.
For a first character, Warrior or Longbow Ranger are solid choices. For uber pwnidge and soloing just about any champ or crowd of mobs you encounter in the open world, Mesmer is my weapon of choice.
I’m a Mesmer. I can do anything.
…
Edit: Forgot minions got fixed, which now makes Minion Necromancer a very solid choice. A full crowd of minions is a pestilence upon the land and a veritable loot sponge. Fun and easy, great for starting out.

Because in MMOs it’s a common usage dating back several years and not limited to GW2. Given that GW2 isn’t a MOBA, RTS or tabletop game, its use is appropriate.
While there’s nothing wrong with questioning that, challenging it as if it were something wrong is no less silly than an MMO player lecturing WH40K tabletop gamers for not using MMO terminology in their matches.
But it’s legal to be silly in MMOs, so do what thou wilt.

All the the things you’ve listed are quite doable, but if you haven’t focused on them so far, it’s for a reason.
If you’re comparing your progress to other players, you’re doing it wrong. If you’re having fun, you’re doing it right.
My recommendations: Do what you want. If you want something, go for it. If you don’t, don’t sweat it.

Know What Cannot Be Known
What’s the problem? Just dodge when you see the visual attack cues you can’t see beneath the blinding layers of cosmetic bling and particle effects that completely obscure most bosses, even with “Effects LOD” checked and particle effects supposedly reduced.
Health is easy to gauge: if a player character is on the ground shouting “help me!” with a downed icon over their head, their health is low. If they stop moving altogether, they’re dead. Be sure to help them before any of that happens!
As for identifying classes, it’s easy as pie. If you see a character wearing, say, the Royal Guard outfit, that means he or she is definitely a Guardian, Warrior, Engineer, Ranger, Thief, Elementalist, Mesmer or Necromancer. Yes, it really is that simple.
So you see? No problems. No problems at all.

I must admit I find myself gravitating to the starter zones to see all the new virtual faces and welcome new players to the game.

I haven’t received mine yet, so I suspect sending out all the mails is a process that is ongoing and will take some time to complete.
As for changing the visor, I doubt they will. Aside from the labor needed to do it, most players would probably prefer to keep their characters’ faces visible.
Otherwise, given the non-customizable nature of outfits, everyone wearing them with the helmets enabled would look like different-colored clones.
