And WOW you play with 40+ FPS in zerg.

How does that help with the nametags?

It happened on an overflow. I have not tried the same area again since then.

You can. It is listed in options under “WvW character limit”.

That option has been renamed to “Character Model Limit”.

Lowering it leads to exactly the kind of experience as shown in the OP’s screenshot. That’s because the game displays a nametag for every unrendered character model, regardless of the player nametag setting.

Yes, it’s a choice between rendering all character models, either in pink pyjamas or glorious detail (neither of which are appropriate options on a low-end system) or having your entire screen crammed with nametags that completely blot out everything worth seeing, as shown in the OPs screenshot.

Edit: the OP seems to have the player nametag setting turned on, so he’s seeing more names than necessary. I’ll add some screenshot of my own later.

Now on a side note, for Anet to cater to both parties is just impossible.

With regard to the whole culling thing, of course it’s possible. That’s why they put in controls. Turning player nametags off and chosing a system-appropriate value on the Character Model Limit setting should allow people to tune the game to run smoothly on their machine. Compared to how it was with culling, this should be great for everyone.

Low-end machines can run with the lowest setting, and have the game perform just like it used to when there was still culling. High-end machines can run with the highest setting and display everything in glorious detail. Anything in between can run with a setting somewhere in between. Everyone can be happy.

Only, it doesn’t work right. Every character model not rendered now displays its nametag regardless of the nametags settings, resulting in people running with a low Character Model Limit having their screens flooded with hundreds of nametags, rendering the game ugly and unplayable.

If the nametags settings were respected for unrendered models, all would be well.

Distance only indirectly has anything to do with it. The nameplates that ignore the nameplates setting are for avatars that haven’t been rendered because of the “Character Model Limit” setting. Because the closest models are rendered before far away models, it’s the more distant ones that show up as nameplates.

With that set to “Lowest” you’ll see nameplates for almost every player/NPC in sight, instead of their model.

It kind of defeats the purpose. People who set it to a low value do so to increase playability, and covering the whole screen in a jumbled alphabet soup of many dozens of nameplates doesn’t help at all.

One more issue : there will be free play weekend for the game. Question : how many of the new players will be able to participate in the LS? They cannot go to pavilon until they do the Chaos and will not see Chaos because they under lvl 25 without waypoints.

Well, at least the free access guests will be able to play in Queensdale without getting ran over by the champion train. Seems almost by design that the veterans are lured away from the starter areas.

The nameplates ARE a big off-putting, but they can be turned off (and I do at times). I’ve never seen a player nameplate with that setting turned off (unless you mouse over the player or target them).

My screenshot begs to differ.

(Note: Screenshot taken with “Character Model Limit” setting set to lowest, to enforce a maximum number of unrendered avatars.)

Unrendered avatars always show nametags for me, regardless of the player nametag settings. This turns busy events into splashes of alphabet soup completely covering the actual game graphics. The alternative is to set the “Character Model Limit” to higher values, leading to FPS loss. It’s a no-win situation: ugly game or slower game than I was used to.

Not happy about how this works.

In places with extreme numbers of players, the game now enforces either an FPS drop compared to what I used to have, or having to put up with an ugly mass of nametags (even though I have the nametags for players option turned off).

These floating nametags for unrendered player avatars serve no purpose whatsoever in PvE other than to make the game more ugly. It’s not as if they’re going to attack you like they might in WvW.

When I finally arrived and spotted her (and the zerg) on the horizon, she was at half health. Three seconds later she was dead. Very frustrating, after battling it out all over the map for 40 minutes. There was absolutely nothing I could’ve done to make it to her in time, just because I was in combat when she spawned.

Inflexible Skin System

Manasa Devi.7958

One of my characters had a look that I was pretty happy about, but I wanted something new. So, I bought and applied one of the new gemstore armors. Bad decision! The new armor has horrible clipping and I’m not happy with it at all.

Now, to get my old look back, I can do either of 2 things

  • Reacquire the old skin and put it over my current armor that has the gemstore skin. Cost: 1 armor (with the skin I had before), 6 transmutation crystals, and let’s not forget I’d be throwing away 800 gems worth of gemstore merchandise.
  • Keep the armor I’m unhappy about in storage, hoping the clipping will be fixed someday, and meanwhile, get a new exotic armor with the stats I want, and another armor with the skin I had before to apply over it. Cost: 2 armors, 6 transmutation crystals, 6 storage slots.

Neither is very appealing. Count me as not being very happy about the armor reskinning system.

I’ve just seen this armor on a female sylvari. Not only was there no clipping at all in the hips/thigh area, but the chest piece and the leggings seemed to connect much better than on my female human.

Added a screenshot of my own for good measure. I marked 3 areas.

Top left area: odd lines separating chest piece from leggings.

Bottom left area: armor disappearing into thigh and hip, varying from just a little to huge pieces when cycling through the idle animation. The situation show in the picture isn’t the worst instance of it, the gap in the armor can get almost twice as big.

Right area: similar situation to what’s happening in the bottom left.

I really like this armor, but not like this.

I noticed the same. I really love the skin, but clipping on the legs in the idle animation annoys me.

Annoying is the right word. I hope this will be fixed at some time. I’ve come to terms with some weapons clipping badly with some armor, it’s the price of having great varieties of basic shapes. But armor badly clipping with the body itself, in idle position no less, that really shouldn’t be happening.

This change sucks. The one key I earn every few weeks while playing now has a significant chance to drop something I need a large number of before they have any use at all. It’ll probably take me a year to get enough scraps to change for 1 ticket, and then I’ll need 4 more tickets…

This change might be interesting for people who actually buy keys, but it’s awful for people who just open chests with random keys they pick up here and there.

@ Manasa: You are missing the point. The issue with the forum whining about things being “too hard” is that unfortunately, if too many ppl whine loud enough, sometimes things get changed and up to now I do not think this has not been to the better. Not to mention that what is often meaningful critisism and suggestions are lost in the noise of meaningless whining.

If you can’t make a point without first telling people how tired you are of their whining, your point is likely to be completely ignored. Personal attacks don’t contribute to a conversation. Attack the opinion, not the people putting it forward.

No. There are those who are frankly tired of the constant whinig and people feeling entitled to complain and scream and cry about anything and everything that is not to the PERSONAL liking as if they are the center by which everything must be measured: “If I can’t do it/don’t like it then it must obviously be nerfed/removed”.

How do people let themselves get tired of something they don’t have to pay attention to?

Obsessive/compulsive reading of offensive sections of a forum? I never realized this was such a pervasive and quality-of-life affecting issue. Health authorities should look into this.

in Dragon Bash

It’s Demmi.

Quote the first letter: "I’ve heard whispers about a threat to the Ship’s Council and, if left unchecked, to the city itself. I’d intervene myself, but circumstances prevent it. "

Whispers? Clearly an Order of Whispers reference.

Circumstances prevent her intervention? Demmi is in hiding and can’t show her face during a festival.

And why the “E”? This is a bit tenuous. In music, “E” corresponds with “mi” in standard fixed-c solmization (do-re-mi scale). “Mi” as in Demmi.

The evasive opening line of the first letter, and the mistaken gender (Mr. E) are just measures to ensure her anonymity.

The dragon coffers are definitely an improvement over the ticket distribution in the previous two events.

During Secrets of Southsun I had to cross my fingers and hope not to get a ticket, every time I opened a crate I got as a drop. I’d have felt horrible about getting something realIy rare that I would just destroy because I wouldn’t want to be caught dead with one of those terrible looking sclerite weapons, while most people who would like one couldn’t get one despite spending heaps of cash.

With Dragon Bash, I can just sell the coffers and make heaps of in-game cash from those same people. Hurrah!
