Remove the Cap on Daily Achievement Points

I don’t care about why there’s a cap, I’m just analysing the effects of the cap and challenging the weird notion that the cap allows people to catch up, whether or not that is the intended effect. It just baffles me that people think this catching-up thing is true at all.

With the cap, veterans that don’t or hardly play any more can’t be caught in a timespan of less than 5-7 years and veterans that still play can’t be caught at all.

The cap just rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

Also, I haven’t seen a single reasonable argument in favor of the cap.

and makes sure that the new players will not be able to catch up.

No, the reason that new players cannot catch up is that there are 1400+ points that are locked behind historical achievements.

Without a daily cap, latecomers could catch up to retired top-of-the-bill veterans. I think that’s what Astralporing is getting at anyway. With the cap, these retired veterans will be uncatchable for many years to come. As many years as it takes to earn up to 1400 newly added AP

When people only log in for 10ap daily, than the game has much bigger issues, which can’t be fixed by upping or removing the cap.

Having 1 account at cap and 1 nearing it I’m glad it is there and yet still do them. The rewards have been increased in this last itteration, but apparently it will never be enough for some people. It’s greed pure and simple. Maximum amount for 0 effort.

I’d rather all daily AP be removed completely, than have it uncapped or risen.

You can’t tar everyone with the same brush. I’ve always detested the move to log-in rewards and the far too high 10 AP reward for 3 dailies. To this day I still find it ridiculous to get a reward for just logging in for no more than the time it takes to accept the reward.

Uncapped dailies but smaller portions, and no way in hell to see other people’s AP totals in-game, that’s how I see the ideal system. No leaderboards either. Public AP totals add nothing of concrete value. They’re just something to obsess over.

I have a choice of enjoyable activities I can indulge in with my “me-time”. Guild Wars 2 is one of them. Since hitting the cap, GW2 has moved down the list. I still enjoy it when I play it, but I play it far, far less frequently now.

But here’s the kicker: playing less frequently leads to a lessened interest in what’s going on with the game. I haven’t even skimmed over the recent balance update yet, even though I played for a little bit. I just don’t care about some numerical changes. Stuff still dies when I swing at it.

I’m perfectly okay with playing less. It means I get to do other enjoyable stuff more often. This process of waning interest is not something particular to me though. “Out of sight, out of mind” is so common a state of mind that someone ages ago made up an expression for it. The whole thing is no skin off my back. You have to ask though if ANet can afford to let player interest lapse because of this.

Such changes can only be made in a modest time frame if all the performance statistics needed to tune scaling in a different manner are already gathered, updated in real-time and stored in a way that allows expedient retrieval that’s suited for a real-time application. Since we don’t know if this is all in place, we can hardly hazard a guess as to how much time the requested change will take.

Can daily reset PLEASE reset gathering nodes?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Manasa Devi.7958

Manasa Devi.7958

IMO All the gatherables (Nodes & unbound magic) should reset at reset. If I have to leave the zone and come back in at reset that’s fine, but please for the love of cats, let the unbound magic and harvesting nodes reset AT reset. It’s annoying and I like to use the same set of unbound magic to do the dailies each day and I can’t because sometimes due to my schedule I don’t do the zone dailies at the same time every day.

Yes, it’s just annoying when that happens. I can’t gather some stuff at all on day 2 if it so happens I played late on day 1 and find myself playing a lot earlier on day 2. It’s pretty unreasonable to expect people to “lock in” the times they play particular zones from day to day.

You can bind a key to the special skill button.

Also, the added mobs appear at predictable times. When the walls stop spinning, a door opens. Wait for those walls to stop and find the mobs. If you catch them early, you can deal with them before they spread out into the room. Never break Caudecus’ shield while you still have other mobs around, they’ll ruin the DPS phase.

In a nutshell:

  • Throw bloodstone at Caudecus.
  • The walls will start spinning before you break him.
  • Ignore Caudecus, wait for the walls to stop, look for an open door.
  • Kill mobs.
  • Finish breaking shield with bloodstone.
  • Have a DPS phase without interfering extras.
  • Repeat.

All the while, just stay calm and avoid orange circles. Nothing particularly difficult will happen if you know what’s coming and are ready for it.

I consider myself pretty average at this kind of thing, and I managed to pull it off without going down at all on a mesmer in berserker gear. It was the third character I did the fight on. I was pretty overwhelmed the first time I did it (the jade bow didn’t help!) but once you realize everything that happens is predictable, it’s a lot less hard than initial impressions do suggest. Missteps can be brutally punished though, with the chained launches and knockdowns.

Who said anything about extra health? Certainly not I. I wrote a post of 219 words. Two of them were “marauder gear”, which I added to provide context, not in advocacy of anything.

And that’s the only part you saw fit to react to, bringing up the “extra health” nonsense all by yourself. There was none of that in the post you quoted from. I gave a run down of my experiences with the fight. That was the substance of my post. Not the 0.91% of it that said “marauder gear”. And ironically, you’re telling me to carefully read. “Facepalm” indeed.

My second character doing the fight (solo) had a much easier time. Ranger with marauder gear

You don’t need Marauder gear as a ranger, you have enough HP. This fight is easy to do for any ranger with a Berserker or Viper build.

All of my characters have a single set of equipment. If I want a new build, I make a new character. I have a lot of characters. I have a berserker ranger, but nowhere near that point in the personal story. I have a high health ranger (marauder) because it fares better in situations of extreme condition damage overload. Also, my berserker ranger is a tall norn, and I find the Manor’s ceilings and passages annoying even on small characters. I wouldn’t dream of taking a tall norn in there.

Please keep the “zerker is the only build” platitudes out of this topic. I have no interest in anyone’s take on what works and what doesn’t. That’s why I don’t read or post in such topics. This one is about the particulars of the Caudecus fight. Thank you.

Going to try a mesmer next. My squishiest character by far.

Quoting myself here. Just finished with the mesmer. Didn’t go down once.

I learned something new about the fight. The spinning walls! I never noticed before because I desperately tried to ignore the awful spinning, but this time around, feeling more relaxed because of prior experience, I noticed that the adds spawn when the walls stop spinning. Earlier, I just spotted the adds when I came across them while running circles around Caudecus. I never connected them with the spinning walls. Now, I knew when to look for them, which gave me a useful edge. Two times, I managed to be on top of them while they entered the room, killing them fast.

In conclusion, I don’t think the fight is all that hard when you know what’s coming. Take your time with the bar breaking, prioritize avoiding being knocked all over the place. Take down adds quickly. Only throw bloodstone when it feels like a safe moment to do so. Burn phases are easy enough when you don’t miss the special skill.

My second character doing the fight (solo) had a much easier time. Ranger with marauder gear, I had little difficulty staying upright. I went down once, didn’t die at all.

The one thing causing me trouble when I did it the first time were the adds, the Jade Bow most of all. Avoiding its cc attacks was a matter of luck because I couldn’t see them coming. The problem with being cc-ed once is that you’re very likely to get a few more helpings of cc before you’re back in control. That’s not a real problem anymore because without the jade, it’s much easier to avoid being cc-ed at all.

With my second character, I noticed that adds always showed up while I was busy throwing bloodstone at Caudecus. I just stopped doing that, and killed the adds before breaking Caudecus’ bar. That way, I was free to heap all the DPS I could on Caudecus without anything interfering. There’s a lot of time to do that before his shield goes up again, and making the best possible use of that time really cuts down on the number of times you need to break him, which in turn minimizes the number of adds you need to deal with.

Going to try a mesmer next. My squishiest character by far.

Manasa Devi.7958

This is honest feedback from someone who has really enjoyed episodes 1-3 of this season.

So far, I don’t find the story and zone very interesting. I think episodes 1-3 were some of the best LW and I can appreciate that this episode might have been planned to reuse more material than usual due to the holiday season.

I do intend to finish it but I don’t really feel very compelled to do much with it now.

It feels like a lot of re-used foes and zone models. Again, given time of year, I can understand this one wasn’t planned as a heavy lift but I would have reused mobs or zones, not both.

That said, it isn’t terrible, just not as good as some of the recent ones that set a very high bar. Looking forward to finishing it and looking forward to more.

I logged into GW2 on thursday in anticipation of seeing the new zone and experiencing it. I quickly found myself asking what it was that was boring me. Was it my character, the zone, or just the game’s mechanics. It felt like I had already experienced all of it, and was merely replaying it, even though it was the first time in the new zone, and I hadn’t played GW2 in months.

I honestly am in the same boat. I really want to like the new map. It’s beautiful, and a smallish map so it should be easy to get around in, it’s got repeatable hearts and new stuff to collect and new achievements to hunt down.

But I’m bored, and I’m annoyed, and I really cannot pinpoint what it is that’s bothering me about this map. The longer I spend playing the map the less I want to play it. Last night I thought I was feeling this way because I’d had a sorta crappy day at work so I was in a rotten mood, but tonight I’m in a great mood and I just find myself not only uninterested, but disinterested.

I know that this is unhelpful. It helps to provide specific details as to what I think might be improved upon, and speaking in generalities like I am here isn’t very useful to the developers who worked so hard on this content. But there’s just something about this map that I find myself not enjoying. It’s turning me off to playing entirely and I’m frustrated in that I can’t explain why.

I’m sorry.

That boat is getting crowded, I’m in it too.

A big part of it for me is how annoying many of the enemies are. Not hard, just annoying. The clerics with their time wasting block, the mesmers you need to kill twice, it takes all the joy out of combat for me.

I’ll take the HoT jungle maps over this one any day. Some of the critters there actually make a serious effort to kill you, and fighting them is fun. Many of the Lake Doric enemies are just speed bumps.

The fight is just annoying, every aspect of it.

And it’s all fake difficulty.

Get hit by a jade bow knockback missile you don’t see coming, because the Jade is standing behind giant Caudecus. Get wedged between the wall and a crate. Struggle to get back into a position where the camera will actually show you something relevant but don’t make it before you’re dead. Struggling with atrocious camera behavior shouldn’t be what makes a fight hard.

Also, getting ganked by 3 bandit snipers you didn’t see spawn in and going from nearly full health to downed in zero point 5 seconds? Not enjoyable. Waiting for the NPCs to clear out those bandits before jumping back into the action because you’re too annoyed to even want to bother doing it yourself? What the hell is the point of it all?

The map seems ok, but ask me again after I spent some more time there.

As for the instances: I hate the last one with a passion. I hate the area it takes place in. No, I despise it. I had hoped never to set foot there again after doing the story mode for Caudecus Manor. I’ve never done any of the explorable paths because I find the whole area intolerable. The problem? The low ceilings, all over the place. I have a particular way I want the camera to be positioned, and Caudecus Manor just won’t let me. So I don’t play it. And now this episode took me there. I hated every minute of it.

For me, the final battle wasn’t worse than every other battle leading up to it. Every minute in that house and its cellars feels cramped and it annoys me to have to play with a camera angle that disagrees with my enjoyment of the game.

The problem isn’t “doing it”, the problem is how the current way of things makes people experience the totality of the story in disjointed chunks, because people don’t realzie they should be doing it. If people plough on through the personal story as guided by the GUI and the green star, and they don’t realize the dungeons tell part of the story, the story experience ends up making less sense than it should.

The fashion and armors in Tyria are not tight. You are confusing our world with Tyria.

You’re the one who’s confused. Tyria doesn’t exist. It’s a product made for entertainment, by people in our world. Every aspect of it has been created by people who have access to our opinions on it. Are they required to act upon our desires for the product? Not completely, but at least to the extent that it remains a marketable product.

There is no “Tyria” to stay true to. There are no cultural leanings to slavishly hold on to. They can, at any time, create something that breaks the mold and say “Oh look, progress! New trends! Living world, yay!” They actually do that all the time. Just not with regard to armors, unfortunately. Trench coats have gone out of style in our world, it’s about time Tyria moves on as well.

Dragonball = Zero fun

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Manasa Devi.7958

Manasa Devi.7958

It’s a bit strange though as the issue is exactly the same for the Wintersday one and yet there are people praising that one over Dragonball. Just saw that in map chat earlier.

People are complaining more with Dragonball than Winsterday’s mini pvp game because of the achievements. As you said, both have the same flaws, but Dragonball have more greedy achievements tied to it; some of these achievements are pure luck because of the bad matchmaking system.

I, personally, really like these mini games, but can’t stand the system at all. So, unfortunately, I don’t play dragonball in particular. Knowing you are actually winning the game but you are swapped 5 seconds before the end is totally unfair.

I prefer losing winsterday’s pvp game because there is almost nothing to win with it, and it’s way less frustrating to lose a match because of it.

None of the achievements are pure luck and hardly any are greedy. In case you didn’t know, being swapped 5 seconds before the end will still give you a win.

It is, at least when you enter a game where you are automatically in the team losing with people leaving/enter & repeat because they see that they can’t win due to being outnumbered.
Happens to me everytime I try to enter a game. then it happens during two-three games and since people are leaving you are never 5vs5 and always outnumbered by the enemy.
The achievements can be done fast or slowly depending of your luck with the matchmaking.
You can’t predict if you will be 1vs1 or 4vs5 or anything.

It’s frustrating.

Last year I almost never had this issue for some reasons, so I guess I was lucky with the matchmaking system.

I personally think the achievements shouldn’t have been there other than the one that gives rewards after 10 wins. Without the achievements, the defeat shouldn’t be as much frustrating.
I play the winsterday’s pvp mini game a lot and as far as I know there is not that much rewards from doing it.

The only achievement that would be based on luck, if you considered getting into a “winning team” at the start as luck, would be for the 10 wins. None of the others require you to have a winning team. Neither do the ease of doing them depend on whether you’re in a winning team.

If you want to win then be proactive and organize the team so everyone plays together. You’ll have much better luck this way than hoping to land on a team where someone is already doing this for you.

Individual player behavior cannot salvage this activity. The last time I played it, the first game I joined, I joined the losing side at 460-40. At least it was over soon. The next game, several people joined and left on my team before the countdown had even completed. We started with 2 vs 4 and obviously got slaughtered in the early game. All the while, people that joined in immediately left, probably as soon as they saw the score. And that were my 2 games for the day.

At the very least this thing needs a dishonor debuff so there’s a decent chance to get into an actual match.

The basic problem with this entire MC argument is this.
I need MCs more than you do , so you should sell all your hoarded MCs on the TP so that I can get them at a cheaper price.

Everything that people sell on the TP works like that: I sell the stuff I don’t need to people who are willing to pay me for it because they want it more. A big difference with m-coins is that no one needs them; we just want more shinies. We get plenty for free without doing more than logging on; I’m okay with the idea that we pay someone else for the use of their freebies.

There’s no such difference. There’s not a single item on the TP that anyone needs. Everything you buy from there is either a luxury or taking a shortcut.

You misunderstand: there are items on the TP that buyers need to outfit their toons in mode-standard gear (i.e. exotics for open world, ascended for fractals, etc). Obviously sellers never need the stuff they sell, otherwise they wouldn’t sell.

Shortcuts. You can make your own gear.

Mystic coins aren’t needed by anyone; they are desired (sometimes highly desired) by people who wish to make or sell luxury items, things that aren’t needed a mode-standard gear.

And luxury items.

Just like I said.

If the second slot of a BLC is a guaranteed “convenience” item, it should never be an item that has no purpose at all. Having to destroy it just to reclaim the inventory slot the chest pooped it into, that’s actually inconvenient, the exact opposite of what’s advertised.

Maybe a mystic forge recipe, even if it results in something minor.

What would be nice is a “reroll” recipe: toss in 1 or more of a BLC convenience slot item along with some additional ingredients that make the cost to reroll not completely insignificant, and receive a random different BLC convenience item. Could even be a gold/spirit shard/karma sink depending on the other ingredients.

It would stop items considered to be “convenience items” from being entirely inconvenient things you need to spend time destroying, if you have a permanent version of the drop you just got.

You can try to put a value on the wardrobe unlocks, but that’s pointless, because their value is subjective. The gold value the unlocked skins represent is only really relevant if you get something you want and might have spent that gold on.

I’ve had a few BL weapon skins unlock, and all they’re worth to me is a dim grey icon in my wardrobe lighting up and going full color. I’ll never ever use those skins and I consider them to be a worse drop than the tome that could’ve dropped in the same slot as the wardrobe unlock that unlocked them.

The real-life equivalent of the wardrobe unlock is a raffle ticket that might give you nifty stuff worth thousands of dollars, but is more likely to give you thousands of dollars worth of horse manure.

Some people are more interested in account value . So a random skin that you whould never use is still maybe 800g+ for them.

Like I said, the value is subjective.

Autowalking from the quaggan platform DOES NOT DESTROY the snowflakes.

It does. I’ve been looking at it for minutes on end.

Snowflake appears and starts disappearing the moment the autorunner drops off the platfrom.

Every.

Single.

Time.

This is with no one else doing anything. Not a single other player being anywhere near.

As it happens, I had a weird issue like this earlier.

I’ve been doing the original personal story with my revenant lately, slowly, one chapter a week or so. I’m one or two story instances past the point where the Pale Tree asks you what’s your greatest fear. I picked “letting an innocent die”, which will eventually lead to the mission where demolitionist Tonn dies. I’m not there yet though.

So, imagine my surprise when his wife, Pact medic Ceera, started yelling at me for letting Tonn die, when I talked to her at the camp near the entrance of Auric Basin.

If you’re going to spend any time on the latest 2 maps, Ancient Magics: Propulsion is a good pick.

When you say the latest two maps, do you mean the newest little maps that came with the Living World episodes?

I just finished the story with Bloodstone Fen, though have a few more things to hit for map completion. Haven’t started on the next two story steps yet.

I’ll go for that next, thank you!

Yeah, I meant the maps that were added with chapters 2 and 3 of the current living story season. Ember Bay and the Bitterfrost Frontier.

The Propulsion mastery can move you across the maps at enormous speeds. The mastery is actually required for map completion if you don’t want mesmer help.
