If you have a mesmer that can generate lots of clones/phantasms, they can be quite useful at defending Hodgins. The gravelings rarely target him when there’s myself + 3 clones distracting them.

tPvP Laurel Bug improved the game!

Mathemagician.1836

I completely agree. I’m one of those players that doesn’t spend a lot of time in PVP (I do some WvW, but mostly do PvE). I was rank 4, but the pvp daily rewards don’t give me anything to help PvE, so I kind’ve just stopped. I had a lot of fun doing pvp last night, it was a nice change of pace. And at the end of the day, laurels were awarded, and I said to myself, “I’m going to try to spread this out more next month, maybe do a match or two a day”. Today I read that it was a bug, and it made me a little sad. I’ll probably try to squeeze a match or two in now and again, but I have to admit the laurels were a big incentive!

I might change the structure of the monthly achievement a little bit…say, make it require 5 daily achievement completions (they did this with the PvE monthly when laurels came out).

Thanks for this. I think this is a really useful resource for new players, as just seeing a normal playthrough is very helpful. If you do more work, you might point out where things change at what level, if you remember. E.g. ice elemental in dredge level gets adds at level 10+, harpies get knockback attack (bring reflection if you have it!), etc. I find those changes to the levels very disorienting when I first encounter them, it’d be nice to have a summary of it (especially in text format : ) ). Maybe it’s out there already…

Gem Store Item: Trait Reset

Mathemagician.1836

It’s not useless. Fractals at the moment do not have a way to repair, and I’ve been in groups where people have become pantless before the Jade Maw fractal; therefore the repair canister is useful, even though there’s an abundance of repair stations around.

It’d be great if I could retrait in Fractals if I found that my build was just not working. It’d be great if I could retrait in a WvW siege. Heck, I wanted to retrait last night and didn’t have time to go back to a trainer. Probably I’d have forgotten if it wasn’t for this thread (Here’s to hoping that I remember by the time I get home..)

I think that for the right price, I’d invest in a handful of such items. I’d certainly be happy to see them pop out of a Black Lion chest!

Overused tactics

Mathemagician.1836

Well, I’m not the most experienced in the dungeon running circles, but I don’t feel like reflection is a big deal, it’s a reasonably limited skill that requires some timing. Some enemies though really destroy themselves under the reflection though, so I could see the damage being capped at my max crit damage, say.

Stacking on the other hand, I find to be a real issue. Last two fractals runs that have yielded the dredge fractal have all been “ok, stack here so we can pull the minions but not the boss.” I don’t like it, personally.

Bad Economy

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Mathemagician.1836

Mathemagician.1836

I’m with Maylojager, we need more information.

Anecdotally: when I was leveling up my first 80, doing some crafting by buying materials from the BLTC, I never found myself wanting for money. I didn’t do any farming, just played the story and did zone completion when it was appropriate. Almost all of my money went to crafting, and in retrospect this may have been an inefficient use of my limited funds, but I derived fun from that part of the game. The majority of my equipment was always of approximately current level. The upshot of all of this is that I would have never considered myself poor, because even though I was strapped for cash I was always sufficiently equipped to be able to play level appropriate content. Importantly to me, I could play this content without grinding/farming for equipment.

Sure, I’m poor when you compare me to people who are actively working on their legendaries. But there will forever be someone who plays more than I can (or want to), and even people who play the same as I do but are much more dedicated to making money. I have decided less wealth than such people, but does that make me poor?

I’m not wanting for anything I need to play any of the content in the game, so I don’t consider myself poor. This happened to me very organically, I never focused on making money (indeed, as noted, I probably threw away a lot of money on my first character by crafting), so I’m inclined to say that the economy is not bad. Maybe it’s a matter of perspective?

I don’t want to sound like I’m dismissing your concern out-of-hand, but that’s my take, until we get more information.

Nevertheless, I posted a similar suggestion a while ago, and I came to appreciate the following, and assuredly rare, situation where one has a full inventory and does not want to salvage an item. If you need to quickly make room in your inventory, or cannot get to a vendor (because you are in a dungeon/fractal), then it would be acceptable to put the item on the trading post at the vendor price just to get rid of it.

Craft while I level?

in Crafting

Posted by: Mathemagician.1836

Mathemagician.1836

I understand that some of the items needed for legendary items require you to craft them yourself, as they are account bound. Although by the time you’re going after a legendary, I suspect leveling up the needed crafts will be trivial.

To level your crafting without dedicated farming, you’ll have to buy some things from the trading post. I did not find this at all disruptive for my gameplay; I enjoyed making my own equipment for each of my characters. On the other hand, many of the things you can make you can currently buy on the trading post for insultingly low prices; in that context, you may indeed be better of selling the materials you come across on the trading post and using the proceeds to buy your desired goods.

Crafting does give a nontrivial amount of experience as you level up the crafts. I found it to be a nice supplement to exploring the world. Even if you don’t do crafting, make sure you still carry about gathering tools, they’re always worth the investment if you sell the gathered goods on the trading post, plus they give experience, plus they contribute to your daily achievement.

Also, a quick survey of this forum will show that it can be quite difficult to make money via crafting.

Don’t take this post to be too negative though, I really enjoyed leveling up my crafting. I also primarily only play with old friends, so it’s nice for me to be able to make goods for them if they just send the materials over. It was also very nice to have level appropriate gear at all times, especially with the stats I wanted!

You can have two crafting professions active on a character at once. The cost to re-activate one (in the case you have 3, say, and you want to swap one out) is 1 copper per crafting level (so 40 silver to switch to a level 400 craft). So what I did was pick two crafting professions per character.

For your first crafting choices, I do highly recommend the armor of the type your character can wear, and jewelry. The materials for those are largely separate, and you don’t have to make as many things you won’t use to level up (e.g. 6 armor slots, instead of 4 weapon slots).

That last zone completion item...

in Suggestions

Mathemagician.1836

Sometimes when I’m aiming for zone completion, I’m stuck scanning the map looking for that one point of interest I missed, or that one heart I missed. A quality of life improvement for this situation could be a sort of “icon toggle.” As a first pass, I imagine being able to set any of the features of the map, Point of Interest, Vista, Waypoint, Heart, or Scout, to “pulse” (with a ripple of light, say) if they are revealed. Just a small effect that would highlight these types on our map so we can see if we’ve revealed one but failed to find it.

With this feature, no extra information is being given because the items have to be revealed to pulse. It just serves to speed up the fairly annoying task of scanning the map for those last few items.

Renown Heart items, progress bar

in Suggestions

Posted by: Mathemagician.1836

Mathemagician.1836

For many renown hearts, one of your options for completion is to collect an item (often this gives some completion), and return it to the heart (gives a little bit more). What I have found is that it is frequently the case for me that I’ll look at the items in my inventory and I am unsure if it’s worth the trip back to turn them in, or if I should just finish the quest in the field.

So my suggestion would be to introduce a differently colored extension to the progress bar that highlights what your completion percentage would be if you turned in all of the items you’ve collected.

If you’re finding it really difficult, try to stick out an entire round. It’s possible you joined in during the hard songs. After the free-play section the map resets, and the first songs are sufficiently easy I’d be hard pressed to believe you’d not get it after a few tries. Once you “get it,” it goes much more smoothly.

Best of luck, I hope you can find a way to relax and enjoy this minigame. I hope to see different iterations of it in events to come!

As I was rounding out my map completion yesterday, I was thinking of all the awesome vistas and points of interest I had visited. Unfortunately, due to being oblivious / in combat / etc, I know I didn’t get to take the time to appreciate the details of the world.

I think it’d be fun if we could use the reflecting pool at the Hall of Monuments (or, perhaps preferably, something in LA so we can still be social) to view a still image of any of the PoIs we’ve completed, or re-watch the fly-through on vistas we’ve viewed. Alternatively, we could be teleported to the selected PoI as a ghost: no skills, no way to interact with the world, but then we could walk around and really see the structures from all angles.

One other suggestion for Vistas: I’d really like to have a title when we view them, something to give me a stronger connection with the world.

Why level up craft when you can buy gear on BTC?

in Crafting

Posted by: Mathemagician.1836

Mathemagician.1836

My answer is “don’t farm.” Most of the materials you’ll come across naturally, so you can sell them and buy the equipment, or use it to make the equipment yourself. Sometimes it’s better one way, sometimes the other. I guess I prefer the stability of being able to make things myself and not worry about market pricing too much.

There’s also the experience boost (can be quite significant!), and for legendaries, you need items that are soul/account bound, as mentioned above, and if you might want one of those eventually you’ll have to craft.

I do recommend for your first two crafting professions either 1) a weaponsmithing (or huntsman, or artificing, depending on your class) OR armorsmithing that matches your class, and 2) Jewelcrafting.

The reason for this is that the materials do not overlap very much, so you’ll be more able to support both professions without farming for them specifically (and every character needs jewelry!). If you try to do weapons and armor for your class, I’ve found that I consistently exhausted all of the fine crafting materials (blood, fangs, totems, etc) just keeping one crafting profession “current.”

I can definitely see what you’re driving at here, and I respect it. I want to add my voice to the mix, just because I’m a little bit against the grain here. I actually like the emptier zones. One reason for this is that, as you say, nobody talks to the NPCs to start the events. This lets me actually see the build up to the events because I’m the one talking to the NPC. This feels better to me than me just barreling toward the orange circle on my map (which I still do…can’t help myself).

It is true that the zones are perhaps a little lonely and there are some group events never get done. So I’d be in favor of these kinds of under-flow servers as long as they have a cap on the number of players, while somehow also allowing my friends join in.

It will be a little bit jarring to make friends, only to find out that they’re matched up against you in WvW

Clock Tower- LEAVE IT AS IS

Mathemagician.1836

So, this took me quite a while to beat last night. A major sticking point was that I was playing as Asura, and at first it was simply hard to see my character in the frenzy. There were a few Charr, and that made it more or less impossible to see my character. I still had a blast because there was camaraderie there. Chatting while waiting for it to reset was crucial to my enjoyment, I think. You just can’t help but laugh and yell “TILTY GEAR WHYYYYYYYY” when you slide off the side of it and someone else got to watch you

I do not think it would work to change everyone to Ascalonian ghosts, or something like this, because in a large group it was important for me to be able to self-identify. But also, when you start to make friends (or have a notion of who is doing well), it’s nice to be able to identify them. As Asura, though, I think it would be a very nice to normalize everyone’s size. The puzzle is surely difficult, but the hardest part was making jumps with no direct knowledge regarding my character’s location. As I continued to try, people started to vanish, and when it was down to a field of 10-15 I could really start to see my character and make some real progress (although I had to make sure I stayed well ahead of the Charr still. This is possible by jumping early as the platforms appear during the first bit).

A comment about camera difficulties. This is one area where I don’t understand the previous comments. I did not have any camera troubles. Question to those with camera troubles: do you hold the right mouse button down while you do jumping puzzles? That’s what I do. By holding down the right mouse button, I use the mouse to turn. I can also swing it left/right and counter-balance by strafing so I can navigate some of the turns a little more efficiently. That might be a way to fix your concerns, because as noted, I never had camera issues and that’s the only thing I could think would be why.

And one anecdote: I spent the whole time in overflow. The first time I attempted the 3rd to last jump (onto a very thin bar), it asked me if I wanted to transfer out of overflow. The message window completely blocked my view and made me miss the jump. What unfortunate timing! Blast you Mad King!

Why would I sell if the TP prices are at 1 CP above vendor price?

Hi. I had precisely the same question. The best reason I can find is that if you are in a situation where you are pressed for inventory space and do not immediately have access to a vendor (and deposit collectible offers no space, and you don’t want to / can’t salvage), then it would be preferable to sell on BLTC instead of destroying the unwanted good.

MF Panda, you raise some good points. The thread has lead me to retract at least my first point. I think the best change to the UI would be a 3 line deal, with a 4 line popup:
3 line version:

Posted price: x
Listing fee (paid immediately): x*.05
Total Revenue if sold x*.85

When this revenue is moused over, it could display:

Posted price: x
Posting fee (paid immediately, 5%): x*.05
Revenue after selling fee (10%): x*.9
Total Revenue adjusted for both fees: x*.85

The Total Revenue amounts could be displayed in red with a “Less than vendor value” warning.

Suggestion: Add split pathing to DE's

The potential problem here is that they already had some branching events early in their initial testing. Apparently it created player conflict, as some people want to see event X, and therefor do everything they can to make sure that event takes place, which often meant yelling at other players I guess.

So I definitely see the merit to this, but it would have to be designed carefully not to repeat this mistake that they felt they had to avoid.

I will admit, my favorite DEs are ones where failure spawns a sort of “make it better” DE, or where it has an impact on the world, e.g. when the pirates blow up the bridge in Lornar’s Pass.

Food items are often used for potions, which Artificers do make. As far as I know, anything in the discovery panel can be used in some way for some recipe at some level, based on the crafting station you are at.
