Human Ranger lvl 4 - leveling up

Leveling from level 12 to level 13 is as fast as from 79 to 80, so yes while it may feel slower than other MMO’s in the beginning you won’t hit a wall of EXP requirements growing exponentially as in other MMO’s.

And yes, I just completed maps and did my story until level 80. I also dabbled a little bit in WvW and dungeons, but not much. But you can level from dungeons and WvW too if that’s your thing.

You can do whatever you want. If you’d like to finish Queensdale first you can easily do the last hearts as a level 12, and if you find yourself dying too much just do some personal story in between, it gives big chunks of EXP. Or if you are sick of Queensdale go to another map, whatever floats your boat. There is no set way to follow, the game is designed so that you can do whatever you want and you’ll be fine – you won’t miss out on anything or whatever.

Any English speaking server will do (so avoid the [FR], [DE], [SP] tag servers). C: You’ll probably want a “high population” server from the list. Piken Square is the unofficial RP server, if you’re into that. I’m personally on Aurora Glade and it’s a nice server in my opinion.

I’m not sure if you know, but when you see someone with a LFG going “fractals lvl 20” they do not mean character level 20 but Fractal level 20. Fractals have their own levels. You start at level 1 (even as a level 80 character) and you go up a level when you finish a Fractal.

The Lion’s Arch Hub has moved to Vigil Keep (NE Gandaran Fields). Note that there are no free access crafting facilities there….you have to use other cities to craft (or pay for a limited time ticket for the crafting facilities at Vigil Keep).

I have yet to enter that area and not see numerous players on my server (Yaks Bend).

So basically it was just a money grab to get people to pay to have access to crafting stations -_-

Not really, you can get to your bank, trading post and crafting stations just as easily in the racial cities.

Because when you’re level 80 you will know how the game works – ways of leveling, getting gear, making money, the reason you’d want to do Personal Story or complete maps and you’ll know your way around the world.

Crafting disciplines are nice for gaining EXP, but they can be pretty costly in either materials or money for a newbie so don’t feel the need to keep up with your disciplines as you level as that will be really hard. The best gear in the game comes from crafting so in my opinion you can’t go wrong with a discipline that makes the armor and weapons you want. Check this wiki to find out which crafting disciplines there are, how it works and what you can make with them: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Crafting

Don’t forget to do the Dynamic Events (orange markings on the map), Vistas (red triangles), Points of Interest (tiny brown dots that turn yellow when you go near them), get skill points (blue pointy figures) and gather plants, trees and rocks you see. This all gives EXP and ignoring it leaves you underleveled for the hearts in a map. If you don’t feel like doing all those and you just want to do hearts, that’s totally fine but be prepared to switch between multiple maps of the same level range.

So what do you think of real life shops that sell older items + extras then? You’re going to complain to a car dealer where you bought your car a year ago that you want the free leather seats the guy that bought the same (now older model) car today for free?

what kind of fail analogy is that? my ISP increases my fiber speed by 20 Mbps since they’re doing a promotion for new customers and thus they compensate old customers. Why not use that analogy? it’s only fair. Oh I know, because it doesn’t help your argument.

I was just trying to say that you got what you paid for. You usually pay top price when something new comes out and later it will be on sale plus all kinds of free extras when it comes to videogames. I never saw the Sims company giving their customers the free Add-On pack to older customers that new customers got when they bought their Sims copy for half of the original price, for example.

Have you done your Personal Story (green text on the right of your screen)? That one gives chucks of exp. Also, don’t forget you get EXP for anything: gathering, crafting, points of interest (the tiny brown points that become yellow when you run close to one), Vistas (the red triangles), opening up waypoints, ressing other players and most importantly Dynamic Events (the red circles/arrows that may appear on your map). Dynamic Events give more exp than just hearts.

Also, what class are you and what weapon are you using? It may also help to slot in some runes in your armor and a sigil in your weapon. It makes a huge difference in damage output. I never actually tried it myself until I made a Mesmer (my 5th character) that couldn’t kill anything for the life of her – and it actually helped a lot. xD

This page shows all ways to get each specific type of gear (e.g. Cleric, Rabid, Berzerker, etc).

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats

You can see there that you can get Rabid gear from crafting, Mystic Forge, Karma merchants, with WvW badges, with dungeon tokens and as loot. So just pick what method is easy for you (are you swimming in karma, dungeon tokens or WvW badges?) or even get the boots from WvW and the gloves with dungeon tokens etc, it’s all the same stuff, just different skins.

Edit: Oh, and the only way to get ascended stuff is crafting/extremely rare loot (weapons, armor, backpiece – backpiece does not drop as loot), Laurels (earrings, amulet, rings), Fractals (rings, backpiece) or guild commendations (earrings).

It’s nice to have some different professions yes, because each profession has their own strengths and buffs so having 5 of the same class is a little redundant, but not really a hindrance or anything. I personally don’t really care about part composition for my dungeon runs.

I’m a newbie in Tera actually (started a Priest there because I can’t here xD). :P One thing to remember that in this game the casters are not necessarily the traditional squishy heavy damage ranged nuker. For example, the Elementalist who is the closest to a traditional mage with their elements can AoE from far away with staff, or use 2 daggers and fight in a style I’d call a weird mix of magic and a thief playstyle (melee, very mobile and fast paced). Then you have the Necromancer, another caster (but more of a debuffer/DoT class) who actually has the highest HP in the game right next to Warriors. Frankly, the Guardian (you’d think it’d be the closted to a tank) has the lowest HP, right next to Elementalists and Thieves. They make up for low HP with a lot of buffs, blocks and heals.

The easiest profession is Warrior. It’s like the traditional Warrior (plain and straightforward, unlike the Warrior of Tera – that one is more like an Assassin right?). It has the highest healthpool together with Necromancer, heavy armor so a lot of room for mistakes, and deals heavy damage.

Oh also, one last tip. Guild Wars 2 also has a dodge function and here you can dodge in any direction (press the dodge key + “forward key” lets you dodge forward), and most attacks can be cast while moving so be sure to make advantage of that. You can also run through mobs here (you can’t in Tera right? It drives me apedroppings xD).

Edit: Actually, I’d recommend to just pick a class you like. You’ll be fine and have more fun if you play a class you really enjoy.

If you press H you’ll see you can switch backpieces on and off like you can with helmets and shoulder pieces.

Is Aurora Glade a good server for newbie?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Melanie.1240

Melanie.1240

Aurora Glade is a very good server. It’s a very populated, it’s known for having a friendly population and 99,99% of the people speak English. We’re right in the middle concerning WvW, which is actually a good thing in my opinion because high tiers are only huge zergs, full of server hoppers and there is a huge waiting line (“qeue”) to get into the WvW maps while the low tier servers are empty. Aurora Glade has quite an active WvW population so you never get bored, but you still get easily into the maps as the qeues are small so you don’t need to wait hours to play. c:

I’m not too familiar with that part of the personal story, but is it your first time choosing “a course of action”? Since you will choose 2-3 times to do the course of action of one of the orders so you can do a mission with different orders before selecting which order you will join. For example, I can do the Priory mission first, then Whisper, and finally select the Vigil as my own order. The NPC’s will tell you to join one of the orders when the time to select your order comes. Until then, they just give you an option which mission to do.

You can do the last part of the event without having to do the Knight/Hologram events. You can skip to the part where the big thing happens and you get to see all the cutscenes (I’m being vague to prevent spoiling the story).

Go to the Diverse Ledges waypoint (lower left corner of LA). There is a purple portal there. If you have the Advanced Spinal Blade backpiece on any character you can enter the purple portal and get into the drill. You don’t need to use the character that has the backpiece, you just need that achievement.

Gear: General questions (Rune of Engineer?)

in Engineer

Posted by: Melanie.1240

Melanie.1240

Kits are bundles, yes. So are elementalist conjured weapons and warrior banners and the everyday boulder you find all over the place.

Grenades are hybrid between condition and power. So are bombs. Flamethrowers AA is mostly power damage, but the few burns in the kit benefit from condi damage as well. Elixir gun is a hybrid too. Acid bomb is pure power damage, but Fumigate and tranq dart is mostly condition.

Generally speaking i would say that rampager gear is best for engi. Gives enough precision to proc the on-crit effects of some traits and weapon sigils, and provides a reasonable power and condition damage to strenghten those effects.

Thanks for the info. I thought the same about Rampager.

rune of the engineer is one of the worst runes available. don’t use it.

Ah, I was wondering why they were so cheap. XD I’d think the 5% damage bonus would be pretty awesome but I guess not then.

i personally use adventurer for condition builds because dodging=surviving. can’t stress that enough. undead i don’t think is that good. nightmare is amazing but a pain in the kitten to obtain. some other good condi runes are perplexity, noble, antitoxin, and scavenging..

Hm I’m not really a fan of the ones you named either. Might duration, 5% chance of fear and life stealing doesn’t seem worth it to me. o.o And isn’t the Perplexity rune only nice for PvP/WvW?

Yes, start with Exotics as they’re easy to get. You can decide to go for Ascended later. Not everyone bothers with that, it’s mainly important if you do Fractals or are a min/maxer. There is no such thing as “best Exotics”, as they’re all exactly the same, just with different flavours (e.g vitality instead of power).

Check this page to see how you can acquire the stats of your choice: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats

I’m trying to figure out what gear I should get for my new level 80 engineer.

I now use 30/10/0/20/10 with grenades, flamthrower/bomb and elixir S/rocket boots/elixir gun. So, I figured I should go Rampagers and mix in some Dire/Soldiers for survability (as I’m not too good with getting off water fields yet – which is the main form of healing for Engineer I believe).

I have a few questions:
Grenades = both power and condition?
Flamehtrower = just power?
Bombs = just powers?
Elixir gun = both power and conditions?
Rune of the Engineer: with bundle they mean kits?

250 (Gift of Blades recipe) +250 (Gift of Blades itself) + 250 (Tempered Spinal Blades)

25+50+100+250+250+250+250= 1175 Blade Shards needed for a Tempered Spinal Blades backpiece? Am I correct?

You mean the capital city of the game? That one (Lion’s Arch) happens to be destroyed at this moment by a villain. xD For now the temporary capital place is the Vigil Keep in Gendarran Fields. Each race also has it’s own capital, but they are not used as much as the main capital city. If you’re looking for a map with a lot of players, the human starter map Queensdale always has a lot of players. You can get there by going to the capital city of your own race (Black Citadel if you’re a Charr, Rata Sum if you’re an Asura and The Grove if you’re a Sylvari) and then find the portal to the Vigil Keep. In the Vigil Keep you find portals to all racial capital cities. From the racial capital cities you can get into the starter map of each race.

I think what I’m actually asking is if this trait setup is ok…

I would never take Spiteful marks. Focused Rituals only sometimes in WvW zerg fights.

What type of damage is best for staff? Condition or Power? Or both?

Both. Maybe take a look at my staff build.

As a general pointer, if your focus is on PvE/dungeons you might not want to play a staff or minion build at all. You’ll be more efficient with something like spoj’s build (stickied to the top of the forum).

Thanks for replying. ^^ Yeah, the Greater Marks was more of a I-don’t-know-what-else-to-pick when not going with the Minion trait. Your build has some really nice information, I’ll swap my scepter to an axe instead (I only used scepter because I didn’t really have a preference for either axe or scepter and hated dagger) and will try out Carrion.

I have tried Spoj’s build and while it was effective it did not match with my playstyle and I didn’t enjoy playing like that. I don’t really care for hardcore speedruns anyway, I have my zerker Ele if I want to speedrun. I’d just like to switch to other classes every now and then for a change.

Staff Minion/Well Necromancer

in Necromancer

Posted by: Melanie.1240

Melanie.1240

I’ve been toying with my Necro ever since I got her to 80, and I have yet to find a build that is to my taste. I came to the conclusion that I like staff as my primary weapon and wells and/or minions as utility, where I will exchange the one for another depending on what I’m going to do (for example, switch to wells for dungeons and WvW and a mix of wells and minions for general PvE).

*Right now I’m using this build when I go with wells: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fQAQNAW7NmAkUc9zQKyV3oHDHcyA *

I swap the bigger marks for more minion HP and the extra damage on marks for more minion damage when I go with minions.

Currently my gear is a mess, I have 1 full set of Knights with Superior Runes of the Wurm and a full set of Rampager with 5 Superior Runes of the Thief and 1 Superior Rune of the Ratasum. I use Cavalier trinkets with Beryls.

I think what I’m actually asking is if this trait setup is ok for a build that focusses on staff/wells/minions and what gear would go best with it. I will use this build for open world PvE, dungeons and a little zerg WvW.

It doesn’t have to be any of the gear I have now, I’ll gladly get a new set of gear if it’s better for my build. What type of damage is best for staff? Condition or Power? Or both? I’ve chosen Rampager because it had both, as I personally thought that would work best in general (to prevent having issues with condition caps on bosses and players cleansing my conditions in WvW also) but I have no idea actually.

TL,DR: just read the bold parts. C:

You should use the weapon set you’re the most comfortable with. Water is great for survability, I personally also like 30 in Arcana for the Elemental Attunement trait which gives regen when you switch to water and protection when you switch to earth and Evasive Arcana which gives you a heal when you dodge in water.

There are not really defined roles for any class in dungeons. Some people like going all out on DPS, others like going more supportive. Just being able to keep yourself alive is the first thing you need to learn, the rest will come later. C:

Edit: Oh and if you have never done a dungeon before I suggest you could start with AC Story, as Explorable mode can be a little unforgiving for new people sometimes.

Level 80 Confusion

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Melanie.1240

Melanie.1240

Recombining greens (Masterwork items) to make yellowes (Rare items) is done through the Mystic Forge. In the Mystic Forge, you can throw 4 items (say, 4 green weapons) and then hit OK. The Mystic Forge will get you 1 new weapon that has 80% to be green and 20% to be yellow. You can also do this with 4 yellows to make an orange item (Exotic item). It is also used with loads of other stuff. For example, if you put 4 dyes in them (say, red, blue, yellow and green) you get 1 dye back that has a small chance to be of a higher quality than the ones you threw in.

I personally do not combine greens into yellows myself, I prefer breaking down greens and blues because they give you materials for crafting and “luck”. You can consume luck to make your account Magic Find higher. Or, if the blues/greens are worth relatively much, say 1.5 silver+ I sell them on the trading post.

You can make money by running dungeons. Story dungeons give 50 silver upon completion and drops and Explorable dungeons (these are a little harder) give a minimum of 1 gold (the easier dungeons) and a maximum of 3 gold (the harder dungeons) upon completion and drops. The guide is probably telling you to run CoF over and over as it’s the easiest dungeon in the game and a while ago it would give you the most money for your time. However, this has been nerfed now to that you can only get that gold once a day per account, so it’s mort worthwhile to do different dungeons.

You can also do “champ farms”. Go to Frostgorge, Cursed Shore or Queensdale and ask in map chat where the “champ train” is. This is a group of players routinely killing different champion mobs on the map. Each champoin gives a pouch or bag, that you can open to get silvers, crafting materials and blues/greens/yellows/exotics.

The LGF tool is actually pretty well used. Just click the dungeon you want to join, and if you don’t see a party pending make your own. It will fill up within seconds (CoF is filled up within seconds) to a few minutes. It’s really fast and easy.
