Fortunately in this game you don’t really have many keybinds, so it’s no real problem coming up with multiple setups that keep everything within reach.

I think the worst thing about scepter is it doesn’t really have a sensible offhand to go with it.

If we had an offhand with sensible offensive minded 900 range attacks, the scepter would have a good feel to it.

Changing up the timing on your dodges even when you’re using them preemptively can really make some big changes in a fight.

We have a bit more leeway in our dodges thanks to the availability of vigor, but they’re still limited.

Ever be chasing someone down and wait a few seconds before using some sort of cripple/chill because you know they’re about to dodge? Other experienced players do that too. Locate situations where you feel they’re waiting for you to dodge and then…don’t dodge. Then dodge a little later. Even experienced players go by a lot of feel as for when it’s the best time to use certain abilities.

Ever been playing street fighter and expected a certain fireball rhythm from your opponent, then been smacked in the face because they did it in a way you weren’t expecting even though you easily could have avoided it on reaction?

Eles are one of the professions where adding healing is viable and in fact desirable. We have a lot of sources of healing that benefit from it.

It’s another method of sustainability much like toughness and can be valued roughly equal to it for us. Regen, soothing mists, water attune heal, evasive arcana water roll, all the various water abilities on weapon sets etc all benefit from healing power.
If you have the choice between adding 800 toughness or 500 toughness and 300 healing, the 500 tough/300 healing will likely keep you in a fight longer. They synergize well with each other.

The value of healing power in spvp is a bit more murky due to some spvp specific nerfs aimed at our healing. In PVE/WvW though, if you’re looking for survivability stats you should definitely have some.

It’s very common for bunker eles to wear a combination of clerics and soldiers gear. The damage is lousy but the survivability is definitely not in question.

Condition damage is generally our least desirable stat and can be the first thing to be discarded. It’s not so much that we don’t use it, but just that we use power a fair bit more.

If this is insisted on, my suggestion is adding one second of additional base swiftness to what is gained from elemental attunement trait by switching to air.

I completely disagree. Eles are still the fastest roamers in the game even without perma swiftness and the RTL nerf in TPvP.

Can be PVE/WvW only, like some of the other stuff.

In fact the entire RTL nerf should have been left to structured pvp only.

I don’t normally run fiery greatsword elite, but I fiddle with it once in a while for the movement capability. It is pretty funny when you get to whirl into someone against a wall with it, its like water 5.

Ele air attunement swiftness

in Suggestions

Posted by: Minion of Vey.4398

Minion of Vey.4398

Add one second to the base swiftness given by the Elementalist elemental attunement trait when switching to air attunement. It would be a great quality of life change. (Currently it gives 5s of base swiftness. I’m asking for it to be increased to 6s of base swiftness).

With the Ride the lightning cooldown nerf and the swiftness duration lowered from the elementalist aura trait in conjunction with shocking aura, Maintaining swiftness in dagger/dagger while still using ride the lightning on the new cooldown (20s vs the old 15) is no longer possible, at least without using weird stuff like updraft or the glyph heal in air attunement.

It’s pretty meaningful when traveling. Unless you’re willing to let swiftness drop off, you’re not going to be using RTL every 20 seconds, more like every 22-23 as there’s the “global cooldown” before you can switch from an attunement after entering it, as well as the fact that you can’t RTL and then immediately leave air. You have to wait for RTL To end.

Whereas before, with shocking aura giving more swiftness, you could afford to wait the few seconds in air and RTL immediately on cooldown every time (every 15 seconds) without swiftness dropping off. To maintain perma swiftness now and still actually use RTL every 20 seconds, you likely need to fiddle with updraft or the glyph heal while in air.

And this is coming from someone that has +70% boon duration.

Old way: RTL, leave air, come back to it, wait a few seconds for cooldown, RTL. (using shocking aura and frost aura as needed).

New way: RTL, leave air, come back to it, leave air, come back to it, RTL (which actually came off cooldown a couple seconds ago). same deal with shock/frost aura.

It’s wonky.

It means two cycles in and out of air attunement (which you really need to keep on top of now since shocking aura doesn’t give as much swiftness) vs one cycle + a few seconds.

It’s pretty meaningful when traveling. In fact unless you’re willing to let swiftness drop off, you’re not even going to be using it every 20 seconds, more like every 22-23 as there’s the “global cooldown” before you can switch from an attunement after entering it, as well as the fact that you can’t RTL and then immediately leave air. D/D Elementalist: Offensive strength?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Minion of Vey.4398

Minion of Vey.4398

My experience is that while condition damage is useful, you get more damage out of power.

What sets it over the edge is that we have good access to fury for increased crit chance, which benefits from having more power.

Much of the D/D condition appliers benefit from power too. Like earth #2 applies a bleed but more of the damage comes from the direct attack. While earth #5 will get more from cond damage than power (unless you’re going all in with lots of precision and crit damage or something), it’s got a strong direct damage component too that benefits from power. Fire #2, while not a strong direct damage attack…does benefit from more power on the breath itself.

So you’ve got these few attacks that benefit a little more from cond damage than power, then a bunch of attacks that don’t use condition damage at all.

The only thing nerfing vapor form going through doors would do is hurt bads or people that think it’s trolling to run outside and die, then mist their way back in (which isn’t even good) I think there’s been a whole 1 time since vapor form was moved to #2 that I was downed in a position where I was able to go in the door in vapor form. There’s just very little reason to die outside your own tower that close to the door. I can live with losing that, it’ll be fine. =P

It isn’t the 4 people guesting over that are lagging you, it’s the 300 from your server that showed up that are. (or put you in overflow)

Stop the undercutting -_-

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Minion of Vey.4398

Minion of Vey.4398

Think about it from the perspective of someone who doesn’t play the TP, but has half a brain to get a fair deal.

I don’t have any need for ectos, so I sell rather than salvage rares. This is the “safe” money, as I’m not gambling on how many or few ectos I may be able to sell off.

Given that rares are a niche-flip market due to the vast number of levels, prefixes, and suffixes, I can be sure that simply clicking “sell to highest buy order” can often knock my profit margin by as much as 20s in some cases.

So when I sell I check the difference between buy/sell. if its reasonable (within 2-5s or so), then I’ll just sell to the buy order. if it’s an obvious flip (e.g. Obscure L79 rare with 30 buy orders at 15s below the sell order) then I know I can make better money by undercutting the flipper by a few silver and still sett the item within the hour.

I’m not focused on my profit percentage. I honestly don’t care. I’m not against people playing the market and I always smile a little bit when I encounter an obvious flip as such because I know there’s some enterprising individual out there risking a big pot of money for a bigger payoff. I like that that exists in the market.

However

I want the money for my rares fast, and I want roughly what they’re worth, give or take a few silver. I don’t bother with the 1c undercut game because in my experience it just results in me spending more time playing the market against people who actually enjoy playing the market. I’ll go for the 1-5s undercut because I’m still getting very near the market value of my item, but I’m still selling it within the day or even hour.

This allows me to make solid money from drops and the MF without actually needing to play the market and worry about my profit margin. Which in turn allows me to spend my time doing things I enjoy, like getting more drops.

Even as someone that plays the TP heavily, I still do as you do with items I get in markets I’m not bothering with.

If I’m out and about and get some random lower value exotic drop, check the TP and see lowest buy for 1.6g highest buy 2.2g, I’m just putting the item up for 1.9g and moving on. I know it will sell and I got a good enough price. I’m not trying to squeeze money out of a low demand item then seeing 3 weeks later it’s still sitting there because I got undercut 20 times.

There’s always that one guy too, CAPTAIN DISCOUNT. If I do a 1c undercut on the exotic instead, CAPTAIN DISCOUNT has 62 of whatever low demand higher value item I just looted and he always seems to like to unload them all 3 seconds after I list my item. It always makes me wonder “Why the hell did someone slowly buy out Coldsnaps all that time just to make this piddly money?” but CAPTAIN DISCOUNT has no time for such inquiries. Hehe.

I usually salvage rares I get as drops but if I decide I’m just going to TP some rare drops I do the same thing. Buy order 27s, sell order 36? Here, have it for 34. I don’t care. It’ll definitely go. If someone undercuts me, his and mine will both go. Good enough. I’m not goofing around with the perfect sell just to see a month later that they’ve gone down 0.5% in price so the rare is still sitting there and I have to relist over something so silly.

I’m a big believer in money in exchange for peace of mind. Am IRL and am in the game too.

Yes. You were actually unlucky. You usually get a rare from them now. (Something yellow at least, it might be junk like sapphire orbs).

It’s more common to get two rares from a chest now than it was to get 1 pre patch.

What's your opinion of the listing fee?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Minion of Vey.4398

Minion of Vey.4398

I think it should just be a 15% transaction fee. They will pay for their greed by competeing with other greedy people. In the end everything ends up the exact same except better and you’ve still provided no reason otherwise.

I can see no downside to merging the listing fee into the transaction fee.

I’ll give you a HUGE reason why 5% + 10% is better.

If there’s no listing fee, you’d never sell any expensive item again without babysitting the hell out of your item on the TP as everyone would keep relisting 1c below you.

You’d be trying to sell an item for 50g that has 20 other sellers, then once all of you are paying attention an hour would go by and the end result would be the low seller selling it for 49g 93s 68c or something after hundreds of 1c undercuts by everyone pulling their item and relisting multiple times.

If anyone thinks undercutting NOW is bad, it’d be an absolute nightmare with no listing fee.

All I know is movement got really clunky with the RTL cooldown nerf. Have to leave/come back to air twice now to use it instead of once + a couple seconds like it was before.

It’s actually more annoying just roaming around than it is in PVP. Doesn’t feel right that warriors can outrun me now (in an out of combat footrace). Even if you stay perma swift and use RTL, Burning speed, and blink on cooldown, you’ll lose the race to the guy in heavy armor if he uses his various movement abilities as well. That’s pretty f’d up.

I can’t think of any content in the game where attacks powerful enough to one shot you aren’t easy to avoid.

Maybe you die to them a few times and then you figure out what’s going on. Then you know and it doesn’t happen anymore. It’s okay for that to happen and it’s okay to die sometimes when you don’t know what you’re doing yet.

It doesn’t mean something needs to be nerfed or fixed so everything works out nicely on the first try for someone that hasn’t done something before.

It’s a game. You’re supposed to start out not good at it and then get better. If you’re dying to things that aren’t supposed to be one hit kills because you’re just THAT squishy, adjust your gear if it consistently causes you problems. There’s no rule that says just because you’re wearing berserker gear it’s completely out of the question to wear a couple power/vit/toughness items (or pow/prec/toughness, or whatever) so you can survive an errant hit.

Legendary concerns

in Crafting

Posted by: Minion of Vey.4398

Minion of Vey.4398

My concern about the Legendary weapons is that they are Soulbound (on Equip). I am at least somewhat highly annoyed at this. The amount of effort involved in making just a single one of them, only to have them locked down to a single character (in a game which somewhat pushes for you to have multiple characters in order to experience its branching storylines), is a bit of a punch in the gut.

I can understand the problems faced with changing this as-is currently, with finished Legendary weapons already being sold and traded over the market. However, wouldn’t it be possible to make these Account Bound on Equip instead? They can still be sold, but at the same time, you can also use them on multiple characters, instead of needing to make 4 Eternity, 5 Bolt, 4 Bifrost, etc. in order to have these on the various professions you may enjoy to switch between.

I don’t see how this would be hurting either the players who have already Soulbound them, intent on personal use, or those that wishes to sell and trade them, as they should still be possible to sell/trade with a status like that.

While I agree with the topic at hand, that the creation of a Legendary weapon is somewhat dull, and far from a “legendary journey”. I don’t mind so much that a large amount of the creation process can be redeemed through Gold. As long as this is not illegally obtained RMT Gold, and either legitimately farmed through the games content and/or converted through Currency Exchange (supporting the game), I am fine with this. I do find the ability to purchase a finished Legendary on the Trading Post to lower the “legendary” feel of them, but I wish to pursue these weapons for the skins and how they change your skill effects over anything else, and don’t mind if someone can get them without setting a foot in WvW, a dungeon, exploring the world, etc.

I additionally think an Account Bound on Equip status should be considered for weapons like Infinite Light, Mjolnir, Volcanus, etc. as these too require a rather good amount of effort to create.

This is a big one for me. 3 years from now when I’m loaded with valuables (I already have a legendary, how many will I have then? Probably all of them I want for my main).

Don’t want to be “stuck” on the same profession forever. Certainly not going to do it all again on another character. I like the game but not THAT Much =P.

Full Heal/Support Build

in Elementalist

Posted by: Minion of Vey.4398

Minion of Vey.4398

The classic bunker build with boon duration runes is quite strong in support. Just make sure you’re near the appropriate people when you switch attunements so they get the boons/heals.

If you’re a tanky D/D and can get in there and brawl, you’ll keep the other nearby melee up with all the protection, heals, and regen. The simple water attune, roll, switch, repeat 9 seconds later outputs tens of thousands of healing a minute before you even hit any buttons. I hear a lot of people say “you can’t keep people alive with healing in gw2”. I gotta say, unless someone is facetanking in berserker gear, you can come pretty kitten close.

In the 0/10/0/30/30, you can switch the 30 water trait to aura sharing, handing out plenty of fury/swift too, of course they get the actual aura effects also.

That’s before getting into the might stacks you give out from any fire 4 —> earth 4, 5 you get off. In PVE I like to sub out a cantrip and load up arcane wave for another blast finisher too. If no healing is necessary at the moment then you’ve got the earth roll in evasive arcana for yet another blast. It’s really long lasting might too with +70% boon duration (30 arcane, 2 superior monk, 2 superior water, 2 major water). Each blast finish in fire will give 3 stacks of might that last 34 seconds.

It’s good enough that I would argue a guardian + ele is better than 2 guardians for PVE. Some people might dispute that but it’s extremely viable regardless.

If someone’s playing staff and isn’t near people to give the attunement switch bonuses, they cannot match D/D support boonwise OR healwise (In fact, it isn’t even close). So if you run with a staff, be mobile and get near people at appropriate times. Though staff makes up for it in some situations with the multiple CC fields available.

Elementist overall?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Minion of Vey.4398

Minion of Vey.4398

Elementalists are pretty weak at low levels in PVE. They just don’t have much going for them to stay alive without a lot of kiting.

Your best bet is having early trait points in water and arcane. 10 in arcane gets you the elemental attunement trait which gives you a useful boon when you switch attunements. Easily our best trait overall. Points in the arcane line also reduce the attunement recharge time down from 15 seconds (with 30 in the line, it’s 9 seconds) so you’re not stuck spamming our weak #1 attacks as much. With 10 in arcane the recharge time will be 13 seconds instead of 15. It helps a lot more than it sounds.

After that, going into water will help you live longer. 15 points in water is suggested for leveling (or more, but i definitely recommend at least 15). 5 gets you a trait that gives you a weak regen effect when you’re in water, 10 gives you one that clears a condition when you switch to water, and 15 is the big one. The healing ripple trait gives you a decent amount of healing any time you switch to water.

Once you have 10 in arcane and 15 in water, you can make up your own mind from there. But that’ll make life a lot easier for you. At that point switching to water will clear a condition from you, heal you, give you soothing mists (the weak regen), and also the regeneration effect itself (elemental attunement trait from arcane gives you the regen effect when you switch to water). Then you’ll be able to keep yourself alive against the usual stuff without any issue.

Don’t have to follow this advice, could level to 80 no problem with any of a million setups. But if you’re not sure what to do and need a solid starting point, you can follow the above.

Don’t be thrown off if you start one and play for a few hours, then think “Elementalists are terrible!”. It’s just a low level thing.

Him just giving you money one time might cause them to look at it, but I doubt anything would come of it.

It’s not like you’re automatically banned purely for sending someone a lot of money.

The worst part is that the air elemental know walks. Instead of legs it would be much better if the flashes circle around the elemental.

the only other ‘important’ thing they’d be doing is creating/redesigning/concepting other stuff

I think there were other possibilities to improve design: I can’t find a proper looking mace and then the legendary a disco ball ….

Moot is awesome now with the square dance floor footprints. You can NEVER be outpartied when you have moot equipped. It’s imbalanced and all non mace using professions are at a severe party disadvantage because of it.

Have you ever seen what happens when you get served by someone with moot equipped? You don’t stand a chance 1 on 1.

D/D vs. Staff Discussion

Can you folks recommend good trait selection for PvE solo and dungeon damage/support? I’m playing with staff traits, but even given tiers (e.g. 30/0/0/10/20) I’m not sure which staff traits are best. Thanks!

I’ve been pretty keen on a 0/20/0/30/20 spec lately.

Bolt to the Heart is pretty self explanatory. I like inscription because it basically doubles the buffs you get from GOEH. It means on fights where I don’t need to heal I can use it as a might stacking buff (especially after the latest patch). There are alternatives, but really nothing all that impressive. I also started specing Air instead of Fire because the crit and crit damage ultimately increased my damage more than 200 power.

Water line is all about support and condition management. Cleansing Fire becomes a 4 condition removal stun breaker that adds Regen and Vigor on a reasonable cool down with Cantrip Mastery. Sometimes I replace Mistform with a different utility, depends on what I am doing. Cleansing Water is pretty amazing. You can take a place like CM where the rogues spread a ton of bleeds and just clear them off en masse as needed. If it isn’t needed (such as you have a shout cleansing Warrior or Guardian) then the fields are still pretty nice for healing as you do pick up a decent chunk of +Healing just from specing down this line. Personally I love being practically immune to conditions with the amount of condition removal I have.

Arcane you got Elemental Attunement which helps stacking might or Regen (which again with Cleansing Water removes another condition). Sometimes I replace this with Renewing Stamina as it’s pretty good as well. Blasting Staff I find pretty darned useful more often than not. For doing Dynamic Events it just increases your tagging radius and for support just increases heal field sizes. Also with 20 in Arcane you rarely notice cool downs between attunements and boons last a good duration. After the Evasive Arcana nerf I haven’t been a huge fan of it. Most of our fields don’t last long enough to drop, swap to Earth and do a roll especially if you have to use your dodge for something else using up the timer. Most of the time that combo can just be reversed with starting in Earth and then swapping to say Fire/Water/Air for the combo. I like it for D/D, but staff it’s just been pretty lackluster in my experience.

Arcane Wave works wonderfully with staff. You can provide AOE Might, AOE Frost Aura, AOE Heals, AOE Swiftness or use other people’s fields to do a finisher all without having to waste time in Earth.

Gear wise I mostly use Berserker. I have plenty of defense in the form of heals and condition removal from the Water tree to afford full Berserker gear for offense. This gives me a fairly balanced outcome where I can be defensive and offensive at the same time while still providing support. I also have Emerald Jewelry for those times I know I am going to just have to deal with the hits for the extra toughness it provides without completely leaving me devoid of offense.

Works for me pretty well and the base lineup isn’t that far off what most Dagger spec’s are so if I want to D/D I can usually pull it off (but not having 30 in Arcane is kinda yikes especially after the boon nerfs).

I’ve always really wanted to not need to use the boring cantrips and be able to run 20 air with inscription trait, 3 glyphs, and the glyph heal in a 0/20/0/20/30 or 0/20/0/30/20 bunker build. Would be so much fun.

Alas, cantrips are stun breakers and glyphs aren’t. I’d drop soothing disruption and run 3 glyphs and inscription in a heartbeat otherwise. With boon duration runes the boon stacking would be glorious.

Best way to deal with condition necros?

Space out your condition removals and you should be fine.

Your healing offsets the damage they do if it’s not built up too much. If you’re removing conditions every time they have 3 bleeds on you or something it’s probably too often.

They shouldn’t be able to kill you at all unless they’re really on point with boon strips/steals etc several times in a row. Even then that might just make it a stalemate if you’re a full on bunker.
