Ether Renewal versus Signet of Restoration?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Minion of Vey.4398

Minion of Vey.4398

You can absolutely use ether renewal instead of SoR. It’ll just take some getting used to if you’ve gotten used to SoR. Considering the cooldown, it has the highest healing output of the 3 heals. If you’re in situations where you want that higher healing output and can get away with the channels, ether renewal is a go.

If you’re running boon duration runes as many eles do, the glyph heal is quite good too. I’ve been using it lately.

They can all be used with D/D.

I don’t get why people do/did it to play at pen/shelt with 80 people in the evening on TC to get less loot because they might not even touch a mob before it dies unless they’re right in position every time.

I’ve been guesting off of TC for Orr since the day guesting was implemented.

Minion of Vey.4398

It was a good fix simply for how ridiculously effective the heal on crit food was, allowing builds that did high damage to be a lot more survivable than they should be.

That said, build diversity in this game needs a lot of work. People in full berserker are going to die alot, working as intended. However professions definitely need more than 1-2 options per prof to both do some damage and not die to a strong wind. Not necessarily fully berserker damage, but something suitable.

With many professions it’s a lot worse than just that. There may be only 1-2 builds per prof that are viable PERIOD, in the majority of everyday situations. Which is ridiculous. I know there’s always going to be that one setup that’s a little bit better and I can live with that, but right now it’s not even the same ballpark.

Consider WoW (before this new expansion which I admitted haven’t played, though I know it simplified talents). I THOUGHT that was about as cookie cutter as you could get regarding talent choices and having a set list for 80%+ of your talents you absolutely had to pick up. However you could goof around with your talents and still be viable there much moreso than this game.

Too many trait choices for professions across the board are effects that should be baseline to the professions themselves. Some are past the 10 point mark in the trait lines too, making it even worse. They need to go through and look at all the traits 95%+ of players take because they’re essential to the profession (And all 8 professions have traits like this), and start making those baseline to the profession. Then we can start actually having more builds and choices.

Have to wonder why the game was designed in a way where just being able to see other players causes the game such stress that this is necessary.

It’s not like this is the first MMO that had a lot of people in places. Those MMOs seemed to figure out a way to let me see them normally.

The changes to the focus are nice, but not good enough.

The scepter is still terribly awkward due to its heavy reliance on direct damage AND condition damage, and its poorly designed skills such as Dragon’s Tooth and Phoenix.

The staff still makes you a free kill if you aren’t built as a bunker.

So elementalists are still quite lacking in ranged PvP options.

Still want to see scepter air 2 and 3 combined. One does damage, one blinds, both are instant. Why not just have scepter air 2 do some damage and blind, then give us a scepter 3 which does…something.

I would say scepter should have an aura and it could go there, but scepter earth 2 (rock barrier) should just be made an aura.

When I’m using a staff in PVE, I tend to be pretty mobile and try to roam around and time it so I switch attunements near them so they get the boons. You don’t have to hang out in melee range, but if you’re about to drop a water field on someone’s head that is in melee range and haven’t switched to water yet, you might as well do your attunement switch to water near them so they’re healed and get regen (or earth for protection). If you have evasive arcana, roll into people in water attunement regularly as well for another heal. Or if you dropped a water field and switched to earth to give them protection, you can roll into the water field while in earth (blast finisher) to trigger healing also.

If you’re in a situation where it’s dangerous even approaching temporarily, such as in the midst of vet warriors in the urban fractal at high levels before NPCs have caught up or something, your group will be best served by you using the various CC fields directly on the mobs.

I wouldn’t say it’s worth instructing other groupmates to play unnaturally to take advantage of combo fields though. They’re good. They aren’t THAT good.

Eles are really bad at low levels. All professions get better with traits but none moreso than the ele.

You don’t have to level all the way up in pure water/arcane if you don’t want, but 15 in water (Healing ripple) and 10 in arcane (elemental attunement) really make the ele play a lot better.

Here’s the big change I’d like to see so people can get the hell out of the arcane a bit more if they want:

Right now base attunement cooldown is 15 secs, reduced to 9 with 30 in arcane. Make the base attunement cooldown 12 seconds instead. Still reduced to 9 with 30 in arcane.

Still desirable to go deep arcane, still worth it, no longer required. Works for everyone.

This would be a VERY bad move IMO and that’s coming from someone who spends most of their time in WvW. GW2 is by and large a PvE game, say what you want, but it is. Just look at all the dev focus so far…PvE this or that, with minor changes to sPvP or WvW.

Flat out adding a HUGE stat increase(don’t smirk, ascended acc. are a big increase, all armor…HUGE increase) from something that is not a “core” part of the game…would KILL a large population.

Casual players are already complaining about the current “grind”, how do you think they would respond to a move like this? On top of that, I’ve seen MANY a WvW player complain about people doing “PvE in WvW” aka jumping puzzles. Imagine the complaints when Timmy says in /t “Hey guys, I just need to do my 50 badges daily for my ascended gear, where can I grind some kills?”…

Think about what you’re wishing for OP…I guarantee you it isn’t what you want.

I don’t think it’d be that severe.

I mean there’s people that don’t want to do guild missions planning on buying accessories with laurels. We can have ascended helms and gloves (or whatever, pick a slot or two we don’t have ascended for yet) from WvW in the same way, and also have them buyable with laurels.

Laurels can be the base level go to for people that really don’t want to do whatever particular content. It probably won’t be desirable to try to get EVERYTHING with laurels and insist on not using any of the primary paths for at least some slots, that’d take too long but you could pick and choose well enough.

Replacing All Dugeon Tokens with Laurels

in Suggestions

Posted by: Minion of Vey.4398

Minion of Vey.4398

Have the devs considered completely removing all dungeon tokens from the game and replacing them with Laurels?

- Each dungeon path grants 1 Laurel per day (story mode included).

- All dungeon gear requires 1 or 2 laurel to purchase.

This change might lead to significant population decrease in WvW, since it highly encourages dungeon runs. Note that running the same path the same day will not give additional laurel.

Don’t worry about WvW. The game already highly encourages people to do things other than WvW.

It’s a decent suggestion. As it stands there are WAY too many currency items. Laurels, fractal whatevers, each dungeon’s tokens, guild mission credits, badges, karma, gold. It’s getting a little crazy.

I’m sure there’s room for more! Since they seem to not want us to be ready to buy anything new with existing currency, we can farm thackeray approval notes for ascended helms, Queen’s permission slips for gloves, Mystic toasters for legs…

Soon there’s going to need to be an extra page on the inventory sheet just listing your progress on all the currencies.

If your teammate is a thief and is able to use his class mechanic to go stealth the entire duration of console activation, will you ask him to go stand on the button instead or kite (or help the tanker at the button even after lvl 30 in the case of some people)?

Nah, only time I kick people is if they go afk too long or lose link.

Sometimes OTHER people in the group didn’t want spy kits, so we didn’t use them. Obviously spy kits are the fastest way, it’s a freebie. But it’s not a big deal not using them either.

Less mobility from RTL nerf

Less survivability due to less regen/vigor from cantrips, less vigor from renewed stamina trait.

Less damage due to less fury from shocking aura.

Staying perma swift during serious combat situations is a little tighter due to some swiftness lost from shocking aura. Maybe not a big deal but it’s another thing.

Then there’s the sPVP specific nerf to the evasive arcana water roll.

The frost aura change is at best a wash imo. 10% reduced damage is nice, offset by the fact it doesn’t chill as much on multiple quick hits. I’d call it another (minor) nerf honestly. I’d prefer the better chill.

Not that d/d bunkers are going to just roll over and die now, but all this combined is certainly a meaningful nerf, especially considering the first three points above.

It’s completely appropriate that ascended should be available outside of fractals. Laurels, guild missions, all that is fine.

But it seems to me like every piece of it should be obtainable through a fractal method first and foremost as well. Just due to the nature of agony resist and the (infused) status.

Besides, we don’t need to have a new currency every single time ascended comes out in another slot. Now we’ve got guild commendations. Then ascended helmets will require Tyrian toilet paper or something.

Found it pretty funny so many zerk warriors felt that they were entitled to have good sustained healing. With the massive damage they do, it should be hard to stay alive.

It wasn’t even targeted just at warriors. For anybody that had access to a decent crit chance, or even no precision at all but good fury uptime, the food was about 20x better than anything else available in the game.

I was actually commenting hours before the patch on how it needed to be nerfed. One of the few good things to come from this patch.

Survivability is nerfed (Less regen and vigor)
Damage is nerfed (Less fury).

Because soothing disruption and zephyr’s boon were stealth nerfs, so people who don’t play eles won’t know about them by just reading the patch notes.

But anyway, what was the nerf to renewing stamina? I didn’t see anything posted about it elsewhere.

I can see why they nerfed RTL. I got hit with that far too often by D/D elementalists in WvW while on my ranger, which made it fairly easy to die, especially considering how fast they could reuse it. Also, to the one complaining they didn’t nerf Swoop, I’ll tell you why…it doesn’t make you invulnerable and you don’t knockdown everybody around you. Those two things combined makes RTL very powerful, so feel lucky they nerfed the cooldown and not the fact that it does those.

RTL doesn’t knock people down, updraft does. And it has a 40 second cooldown.

Minion of Vey.4398

Warrior’s would hardly be more mobile for the simple fact that their movement abilities are all affected by movement impairing effects whereas none of the elementalist’s abilities are.

But yes, for what the class is, its damage is quite low. Potential damage is almost there with scepter, but you’ll never land the burst chain and even with it, it’s nowhere near warrior or thief damage despite requiring you to be in melee range to use it.

And then when you factor in the eventual AE nerfs that they’ve been threatening for 2 months now? The class is in for a lot of issues. And with ANet’s past performance we’d be better off changing classes than waiting for them to improve it.

Regarding warriors, I don’t think they should be winning in an out of combat footrace either (using abilities of course, vs ours). Which they would. Right now when I’m running with friends warriors seem to pretty neatly keep up with me side to side or close enough, with me being perma swift and using RTL, burning speed, and blink.

I can even live with that, but under no circumstances should they outrun us.

But at any rate, yes, damage is a thing. It’s a thing we don’t have. Without the thing we can’t lose the other thing, staying alive. If I wanted to not kill people and also not be able to stay alive, I would have rolled a longbow ranger like everyone else.

(Haven’t worked in any ranger zings in a while, I like to go for those on occasion).

D/D vs. Staff Discussion

Quite frankly, even if chuck norris is at the keyboard, no elementalist of ANY build, any gear setup, or any weapon is going to kill a D/D full bunker 0/10/0/30/30 ele with clerics and soldiers gear and boon duration runes unless they’re prone to serious lag. Put the #1 ele player in the world against me 1 on 1, don’t even tell me their build or gear, and I’d be just fine with putting down $1000 that says “They aren’t going to kill me, ever”.

Sadly, it’s not even because D/D is that survivable, eles just don’t put out any kind of real damage. Even berserker gear with the D/D not hitting you back, they’d have to sit there and facetank to die. I’m actually pretty sure I could just circle strafe around an elementalist healing myself indefinitely and they’d be unable to kill me.

This goes both ways too. I could play as a staff ele bunker build, and no D/D could kill me either.

Hell here’s a sad one, I could play ANY profession’s bunker build and an elementalist of any kind couldn’t kill me. I’m not even claiming some super pro play here, just normal competent stuff. Any other experienced player could do all of this.

Option to balance D/D ele

Posted by: Minion of Vey.4398

Minion of Vey.4398

Problem is if you nerf ele healing they’re going to be absolute garbage.

They’re good at staying alive/getting away…and that’s really about it. Damage needs to be buffed at the same time if there’s any meaningful reduction in healing, else the profession will just be a free kill. A fairly significant damage buff at that.

Stuff like RTL needing a target is ridiculous (or even increasing the cooldown, honestly). Then we’re talking warriors being much more mobile than elementalists. With 8000 more base hps and heavy armor. Personally when I signed on I knew I was getting great mobility at the cost of terrible hp and light armor. “This profession lets me have tons of swiftness and I can zip around with RTL”, I wonder how many people selected the profession as their main purely because of that. It’s 90% of why I did and I wasn’t even aware of whether the profession was good or bad. It’s not like there’s great evasive maneuvers on weapons and no aegis. I don’t even know what the point of playing an ele would be if they couldn’t be very mobile. Might as well give people a 1 time use potion that lets them switch over to guardian, because they would outclass eles in almost every way.

People have to keep in mind the normal DR when assessing how well their MF works. If you keep getting garbage when you’re farming for 2 hours in Orr, that’s because you’ve been farming for 2 hours and DR hit you like a truck. 100% MF when you wouldn’t get anything normally is twice the chance to get nothing.

However I find when I’m killing mobs in a new zone and no DR with my >150% MF I find all kinds of green/blue loot and a very healthy number of rares. This is why I keep my MF on all the time, it kicks in when DR finally ships out, and the more random mobs I’m killing, the better the chance that random is going to drop yellows at a somewhat steady rate.

People like their stats but honestly you don’t need them for anything because nothing in the game is really difficult. The only times you really need stats is when you’re carrying a team through a dungeon or you’re doing WvW. MF gets you more cash. I kill things just fine without max stats.

This is about right to me. In fact I suspect all DR does is gradually reduce your MF (right on down to 0). Seems to be consistent with what I experience, as the regular drops don’t seem to change at all.
