We can rule out Ascalonian Catacombs and Flame Legion mini dungeon – Final Rest has a fixed level: 80. Its only going ot drop off an 80th level encounter, and that means if it’s in a dungeon, it can only be in HotW, CoE, or Arah.

But even those three have a tremendous amount of ‘back alley’ potential.

Have you seen how much lightning surrounds the brand? . Look at the icons for those two – same silhouette. It’s like a before and after picture. I actually find the Molten and Destroyer icons to have similar linked shapes. If you could look down on the destroyer core from the ‘top’ it might look very similar to the molten lodestone it started out as.

I agree Onyx to piles is a little less solid, but Stone (natural) to Dust (undead) isn’t that big a leap, and the essence is still physical rather than ephemeral, so I think we’re looking at evil dust more than pixie sparkles.

Game Theory: “Undercutting”

I think it also help to remember we’re in a system that is still inflating to equilibrium – the money drained out of the system by repairs, travel, Icy Runestones, and TP fees still hasn’t caught up with the gold flowing in from adventuring and RMT. So on the whole ALL of your buyers have more coin over time and become more able to afford asking prices for the things they desire. You only need to undercut if speed is a factor in your future actions, if total numeric profit is you chief concern, you can actually price at or above the asking price of many actively traded goods and get your money tomorrow as easily as you can undercut a penny to get it in the next 10 minutes.

If you are logging out for the day anyway, keep the penny for yourself.

This is very far from the truth.
Even more so inside of MMOs where there is complete data.

I’ll bite. Do you have a good sense of the percentage of people interested in playing a heroic adventure game that are being driven out of the playerbase by occasional contact with a highly predatory market simulator that is little more than semi-consenual PvP in the path to achieving endgame cosmetic goals?

Could you describe in terms well enough to base a company’s finacial well being on the differences between appealing to a rational actor in an economic model and appealing any substantial segment of the MMO playing audience, an audience I’ll mention that is often specifically looking for a little escapism from a strangely similar system that has served them so well they are dinking around in a game instead of vacationing somewhere in the real world.

The numbers available are solid, but they are driving the actions of people in decisions that range far outside their next buy or sell order. Sometimes I think the broader context of GW2 gets lost when defending the efficiencies of this particular sub-system within it .

Why do icebrood not drop glacial lodestones?

Nike.2631

Glacial ones are just uncorrupted ice, I guess. They drop from regular ice elementals. Not sure why there’s a need for two ice lodestones, but that’s what we got :/

We got doubles of all the lodestones-

Glacial Lodestones (Ice elementals) → Corrupted Lodestones (Icebrood)
Molten Lodestones (Embers) → Destroyer Lodestones (Destroyers)
Charged Lodestones (Air Elementals) → Crystal Lodestones (Branded)
Onyx Lodestones (Earth Elementls) → Piles of Essence (Risen)

I’m expecting to see new pairs and new recipies using them as Bubbles and the Sixth dragon are introduced.

I shudder to think what might be required to get that door to open. All temples flipped simultaneously comes to mind when talking about the Source of Orr.

Though actually I always figured that was just an open socket that will turn into a more traditional pathway when they put some new post-intitial storyline zones for Orr in the space to the east of the Cursed Shore. You find similar sockets on several maps where future expansion is clearly under consideration.

On a slightly different tact – is there any boss anywhere that has this staff?

A quick scan of the wiki shows Honor of the Waves, Crucible of Eternity, and Arah all as possible candidates for 80th level Rare Bosses in explortion mode. The wiki does not seem to have a catalogue of random events started yet.

You're Damage Is Low @ 30

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Nike.2631

In my experience running dungeons with low level characters, it’s less about damage numbers and more about knowledge and utility of the character. At level 30 you have fewer unlocked traits, fewer utility skills (potentially), and you don’t have the experience of build tweaking/optimization that you get with a level 80 character whose been around the block a few times.
Gear is a factor, but I’m always an advocate of utility over brute force.

Tell that to the graveling mounds in the Lover’s Crypt.

That is a savagely over-built DPS check for on-level characters. Comicly, hilariously over done.

Sounds like it’ll be in the arah dungeon then. 0.o

I don’t want to skip that far ahead and accidentaly rule out valid targets. I don’t know which dungeons are level 80 in explorer mode (but I’m sure I can look it up). “Final Rest” has a lot more potential tie-ins than just Undead Central. Almost any sort of dead pirate or lost vehicle tied to a “Rare Boss” could justify the link that put it on their loot table.

…And (small tear wells up) we know just how appalingly rare the jewelry recipies are in Dungeons. Even if we do single out 2-4 prime candidates, individually farming for this thing will still be practically impossible. But at least we might collectively solve the mystery…

Oh. My. Sweet. Fluffy. Kitten.

I think I have seen the term “rare boss” used before in GW2.

(I’ve posted a thread to ask, but here goes with the giant leap to conclusion…)

Aren’t “rare bosses” the random events that sometimes occur inside Explorer Mode Dungeons? Like the troll that sometimes pops up in the Ascalonian Catacombs?

If you had to point to one piece of content that was rarely seen at all (doesn’t even appear most runs), frequently skipped because of speed run mentality, and has proven rare drop rates of infintesimal (the dungeon jewelry recipies) all in one place…

Holy. Heck.

Anyone got a good catelogue of the random events in the handful of dungeons that are level 80 in Exploration mode? Something we can cross reference with a “Final Rest” theme?

No wonder it hasn’t dropped-and-been-sold-at-TP yet.

A few hours ago Jeffrey Vaughn made the somewhat cryptic statement:

“It’s exactly as Linsey stated previously—it’s a loot drop from a specific (rare) boss.”

What does “(rare)” mean to Developers when talking about game critters? Heck. I’m a little unclear how exactly the term “boss” is used in this game.

Its not item rarity rare (not a Yellow Name).

Is the a reference to some sort of spawn timer?

Are we talking about the random creatures that sometimes appear during Dungeons runs in Explorer mode?

Puzzled, but hopeful.

Why 1000+ Omnomberry Bars on the TP?

in Crafting

Posted by: Nike.2631

Nike.2631

You are asuming that matterials sell as fast as finished products or in similar volumes. Only chefs with a skill of 400 will buy an omnom berry, while every 80th level character in the game can benefit from buying the finished bar. Further, every character regardless of profession walking across Orr with a zone appropriate sickle in hand can acquire Omnom berries, but only Chef 400’s have any use for them whatsoever.

Their suply and demand ratios are flipped, so while the omnom berry might be listed at a nice high price, the number of them that sell per day is probably a LOT lower than the number of bars sold per day. Fact of the matter is anyone who can use the berries has strong incentive to flip the finger at the TP asking price and just stroll down and fetch a few themselves, while the dungeon runner who is not a chef has zero choice about how he gets his bars – he pays the TP asking price.

So as one of those harvester-chefs, I can post 100 berries and wait all week for them to sell to my chef-ly peers who are for some reason in a hurry, or I can turn them into bars and blow out my stock of 100 in an hour. If my space and patience are infinitite, sure, play the long game. If I’m actually conducting business with those slots, get the show on the road already.

Are you basing that disparity on the asking prices of all the ingredients or the offer prices?

Since you can generally buy anything for ~10% less than the asking price if you have 1 iota of patience, and you can sell Omnomberry bars for the asking price nearly instantly (which may not be true of all the ingredients), you might be reading the number wrong.

Sons of Svanir: Women depicted, but...

in Lore

Nike.2631

Sons of Svanir – I think we can safely say that as a blatantly misogynistic fraternity, no, they don’t include women in their ranks. IF partially ice-tainted Female Norn exist, we have a good idea what they look like (see concept art), but we can’t readily point to one in game to confirm their existence. IF they exist, they’re operating outside of the Sons’ and our line of sight and likely do not have any similar cultish tone. More plausibly from what we know, lightly tainted Norn women would be individuals who either contracted the Ice-ick in combat or sought out Jormag for a more personal contract for power, rather than going through the main recruiting office.

Heavily ice-tainted (icebrood) Norn largely lose their sexual markers of any sort, so we just have to kinda guess about their origins. The is no button for lift the tail and check after you’ve killed them .

My guess is the dragons don’t give a soft, white kitten about out gender distinctions and are kind of waste-not want-not conquerers: so Norn women that get the Ice-ick may get hauled off by ice-brood somewhere away from the Sons to finish their metamorphosis. That Jormag might make allowances for the odd sensibilites of his ‘worshipers’ is justifiable only because Jormag seems to have a softer touch when it comes to corruption – likely because willing self-corruption probably offers a significant savings on energy expended by the dragon (or a significant gain in minion intellect for the same energy expenditure).

Morigren the Ice-Hearted was a Son of Svanir and a warrior of awesome prowess. Not one of those dolts who worships Dragon in the hope of strength unearned. No, Morigren joined that brotherhood of fools because of an unfortunate birthmark that lead him to feel kinship to the Serpent of All Ice. His strength was true, and would have graced any of our lodges had the Spirits taken a firmer hand in his path. His was a fury that would never yeild to the fear in which all Ice-brood are born. His was the Legend of a True Norn.

This then is the tale of how my not-so-timid-as-all-her-friends-thought grandmother set her sights on a mountain-man that shook all the Shiverpeaks like an ice-storm given legs and a booming voice. This is the tale of a dark destiny changed to light. This is the tale of how Bloomweaver gained her title and melted the resolve of the Ice-Hearted with a weapon no sharper than the petals of flowers…"

Wealth growth is logarithmic. Wealth distribution is skewed.

The change in wealth over time, between rich players and poor players, is logarithmic. If it takes a month for a rich player to double their gold, in that same month, a poor player might increase their gold by a factor of 10 or 20 instead.

So when a rich player gets a 100% return, a poor player would get a 1000% return.

The rich player may have 6000 gold now, instead of 3000. And the poor player would have 50 gold instead of 5 gold.

The distribution is still skewed towards rich players. The growth rate is not. A lot of stuff caps out at a certain gold/hour rate, with the exception of speculation, which returns equal rewards for rich and poor players (if they buy in at the same time, they both get a 200% return, for example).

And all of that is strictly for players who play the market – adventurers and harvesters generate wealth is a linear fasion. After hitting level 80, the second month brings in the same amount as the first month, the third brings in the same as the second, and the fourth brings in the same as the third. The progression actually runs retrograde – 100% growth, then 50% growth, then 33% growth, then 25% growth…

Owl’s Wisdom

You find a page with a comical image of a fox crashing into a sleeping bear while an owl flies overhead. The caption reads, “Those who charge blindly forward are likely to be surprised.”

—————————————————————————————————————

You can only make out a few lines. “And Owl said to Wolf, ‘Brother, all your hunting is for naught if your family dines alone.’ And Wolf returned to his cubs, for he knew that Owl was wise.”

—————————————————————————————————————

“Olrun called upon the spirits for advice, and Owl replied,‘To build a family on strength alone is to carve a nest of stone.’ Then Olrun was pleased, for she had chosen a kindly mate.”

—————————————————————————————————————

“Olef asked his mother why his bowl was always filled last. She replied, ‘The finest hunter can’t feed her family unless she is fed first. In return, hunters leave no bowl empty. This, we learned from Owl.”

—————————————————————————————————————

“To hear Bear or Wolf is to know fear, for their enemies cannot overcome them. To hear Owl is to know peace, for her enemies will never hear her coming.”

—————————————————————————————————————

You find the crumbling remains of a blessing. “Owl, we call upon you so that we might live by your wisdom. We will hunt silently and well, so that our homes will never know danger or starvation.”

—————————————————————————————————————

This book is too fragile to handle, but a few lines are legible. “All the wisdom of nature can be learned from the Spirits. But beware! The ice dragon’s lessons carry a heavy price.”

—————————————————————————————————————

The weathered text is difficult to make out. “…there came a cry that carried not through the air, but through the heart of every norn. It was then that we knew Owl was lost to us.”

Though now destroyed (and seriously, what divinity of hope doesn’t get killed from time to time ?), she seemed to be the primary patron and influence on family life, quite seperate from Wolf’s encouragement of solidarity and brotherhood which to me seem more like guidance for work and war than around the hearth.

Infinite Light is a skin. Maybe you care about the Sigil of Luck too, but ultimately, its a SKIN. When ascended weapons come out, use a transmute stone and move your SKIN on to the stats you like. You even get to keep your sigil if you like .

Honestly, its a better scenario than the Legendaries – which all have the exact same (boring) addjective/stat-cluster. They’re just going to update to the same stat-cluster at Ascended quantities and you don’t have to live in mortal terror that if you tinker with it it will somehow fail to get Ascendified properly (I just made that word up :p).

Once Ascended weapons exist, they will be accessible. Sure, the legendary crowd will have the stat line day one, but if you have the determination to get Infinite Light in the first place, you can’t be that worried that you’ll somehow not have the stones to rise to whatever challenge getting your red weapon stat line is going to call for.

I had the opportunity to perform 50 salavages in a row on the exact same rare and the conclusion was pretty clear:

25% chance of 0
25% chance of 1
25% chance of 2
25% chance of 3

I’ve personally experienced runs of 12 cracks with nothing to show for it – but those runs are INEVITABLE at the number of rares I’m cracking. My lifetime average is virtually dead on for the 1.5 per rare average you’d expect.

How much do you guys have

I’m trying to figure out how to actually gauge my wealth. For a while I’ve have 10-16 gold in my bank, but I keep close to a gold on each of my 12 character’s for random expenses/preped for their next skill unlock book as they hit 40. I have 2 80s in full exotic, but I have 3 other characters with full exotic tucked in invisible bags so I know they are ready without taking up bank slots. I have all the bank tabs, so that’s a form of wealth too. I have 40 or so loadstones and 60+ cores which could be converted to a heap of coin if I weren’t a total packrat. I’m also creeping up on the Master Crafter title, which means a lot of coin-worth of accrued value, but not a lot of coin.

So really, I can’t tell if that 10-16 gold means anything compared to the total value of my account.

I know my rate of coin acquisition is going to change (go up) as I finish the Master Crafter title and all the blue mats I gather can either go towards producing ectos or get sold. Likewise the time is comming when I won’t squirel away every exotic I get for a upcomming character – and then I’ll be able to sell them for coin.

Why is GWSpidy not considered a bot?

I realize it’s no more difficult for me to farm barracuda for scales than it is for bots, but there are rules against it .

So, what I’m getting from the feedback here is that the in-world data for the Guildwars 2 universe is accessible at another point than through the client? GWspidy taps this other access method, and the Devs feel its OK to run scripts against that point of interface?

Is there a seperate EULA for this other access point that I can read somewhere?

ANet has taken a strong and active position against botting, which they have generally defined as the performance of more than one action with one keystroke.

I don’t see how this site can remain current on so many data points without running some sort of script against the client.

Its this an ‘acceptible’ Bot? In which case the above definition used by the Devs themselves may need some provisions…

Why would a gold seller even farm mobs?

I think players just don’t like to be reminded that what they are doing isn’t really that clever.

I don’t think there is actually any challenge in this game so great that succeeding would count as passing a Turing test. I thought it was hilarious that GW1 henchman were generally good enough in performing there roles that the only reason you’d want live players on your team was because they were real life friends who would keep you entertained in the voice-chat while you went about anhilating things .

Sure. That’s a given, but I’ve also spent enough time in those tunnels knocking out world completion on 2 characters and playing guide for a third to know… that place is EMPTY. I think the sample size of successful event chain completions is a low as any high level area you could hope for – and that type of scenario is really the only way something like this seems likely to be found (if it can be found at all). If it has dropped, I doubt it was equiped as its quite plain for some tastes and there are not many shield users to begin with. Even if it wasn’t equipped, it was as likely to be scraped for ectos or flushed down the forge as placed up for auction. Only an actual shield fan would be likely to even notice the skin isn’t a plain old Level 5-15 white item shield skin :p.

Are you happy with our elite skills?

I enjoy the elites we have, but I certainly wouldn’t mind having an elite version of many of our theme effect lines -

an elite signet (i.e. “Signet of Glory”)
an elite spirit weapon (“Greatsword of Destiny”)
an elite consecration (“Haven in the Mists”)
an elite shout (“Tyria, Forever!”)
etcetera.
