Definitely worth flashing to the newest bios for sure. As far as that psu goes its pretty bad honestly, runs about 36A on two 12v rails (not factoring capacitor aging) which is very low for a 700w. By comparison a mid-range quality 650w such as the corsair tx-650v2 runs about 53A. Firstly you will need to ensure each pci-e power connector for the graphics card is from a different cable set or more accurately another rail so that it balances the load over both 12v rails.

Obviously worth going through the elimination process with everything else as well.

its actually 4 rails with peak performance of 74A combined across the 4 rails. (18, 18, 18, 20)

Although I do agree with you on the point of running the graphics card from 2 seperate rails.

According to EVGA’s website they recommend 24A on the 12v rail. If this is the case then when the graphics card reaches peak usage it could be causing the BSOD’s due lack of power. It may also not be noticeable in other games as they may not be as demanding on the graphics card.

here is a link to EVGA’s GTX460 and in the small print you can see their recommendations.

This is what it says:

(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 24 Amps.)

Hi ArsenTiger.6218

Sorry for taking so long to respond, I lost track of this post somehow.

I too am a fellow tomato firmware user and I currently use the older Asus RT-N16 with Shibbys AIO 104 installed.
Can you let me know if you have enabled your QoS setting on the router. A problem I faced with GW2 was it was being classified as “Crawl” and subsequently being slowed right down by the QoS. I fixed this by adding a new QoS rule that classified all TCP/UDP traffic on using ports 6112 and 6600 as gaming traffic and moved it in the Games section under QoS.

When you say “we” do you mean there are multiple people on your network trying to play the game at the same time?

P.S. I do not try to treat people as they are illiterate, I simply try to break the conversation down to its “lowest common dominator” so to speak, that way regardless of your level of knowledge on the subject hopefully I can be easy to understand and relate too.

Good Luck.

Hi Chrisrawr.2687

Did you by chance have an account for the original Guild Wars and link it with your Guild Wars 2 account? If so, after linking they share the same login information.

I believe that information is the Guild Wars 2 information, but you could try logging in with the Guild Wars 2 username and Guild Wars 1 password just incase.

Hi Solbabe.9521

It is perfectly safe to delete local.dat (if you are worried you can remove it from its location instead).

The game recreates this file when it no longer exists. As far as I can tell it stores ingame settings such as resolution, graphics quality settings, and sound settings.

I would like to see that too… I don’t know why everyone shuns linux. If they make stuff for Mac, it’s not that difficult to make it for linux, since they’re kinda simmilar.

I remember reading an ArenaNet Rep on the forum saying that the mac client is just a fancy wine wrapper that runs the game under a windows virtual machine. Its not a native client so it would just the same as running guild wars 2 under wine on linux.

Hi Ulysses.4765

To save yourself some hassle of redownloading anything, you can simply backup your guild wars 2 folder to an external location such as a memory stick (16GB or larger required) or external hard drive.

Then simply copy the files back over to your fresh install of windows.

This should save you considerable time since even with the install discs there is still roughly 70-80 thousand files required to be downloaded. This will not be needed if you back up prior to the factory reset.

If this doesn’t fix the problem, there is another option. If you know anyone who has the game already, you can copy their whole GW2 directory from their computer onto a portable drive and then copy that directory back onto your computer. This will save you the download and it will work (I keep a backup of the game at all times so I don’t have to re-download when I reinstall it).

Whether or not the game will work after that is another story, but if only the download is the issue, this would bypass the problem.

This would not resolve the issue as the problem is comminication is not reaching arenanet’s servers so even with a fully updated copy of the game on the computer the user would still not be able to login as the communication between the game client and arenanet’s login server is blocked.

Nitro.4732

Hi BaconsRebellion.9530

Thats a fine list you have there, and it is nice to see someone that is actually attempting to resolve their issue with a little research.

Could you please tell me if you have tried forwarding the ports used by Guild Wars 2 on your router? The ports required to be forwarded are:

  • 80 (seems to be fine on your network)
  • 443 (seems to be fine on your network)
  • 6112
  • 6600

looking at your pathping results (within Guild_Wars_2_Test.txt) The client seems to struggle to get beyond the device located at 192.168.1.1 (Most likely a router)

If you have already port forwarded then perhaps checking your router’s configuration to see if it has a built in “Advanced Firewall”, this may be listed as “SPI Firewall”. Please test again with this option disabled if it is available on your router.

Your router should also have settings regarding “Universal Plug and Play” or “UPNP” now normally this is enabled by default and is the reason why lots of applications and games do not require manual port forwarding to access the internet.

However UPNP can be a security risk if the user does not fully understand the risks involved, therefor many routers are now available with this option Disabled by default. Its safe enough to run a test with this option enable if it infact is disabled. If it turns out to be the problem then a little research into UPNP technology may be advised before leaving it enabled. You can also leave it disabled and just manually forward the needed ports aswell.

let me know how things go

thanks

Quick Hardware Question

Nitro.4732

Hi rickyp.5240

The Intel i3 330u is a 1.2GHz processor with no Turbo boost.
The Intel i7 740QM is a 1.73GHz processor with Turbo upto 2.93GHz

I would expect to see a difference, However I would not recommend this as an upgrade. These processors are not in the same thermal group so you could end up facing more problems then when you started.

The i3 330U is an Ultra Low-Voltage processor and is designed for small form factors with little thermal dissipation (18w thermal design power), you would expect to see this processor is a larger netbook or ultra thin notebook.

The i7 740QM is not an Ultra Low-Voltage processor and is designed for large portable form factors with sufficient thermal dissipation (45w thermal design power). You would expect to see this processor is something like 17’’ gaming laptops were there is usually larger heatsinks and bigger fans involved.

With that in mind you could potentially have an overheating issue on your hands, with more than double the thermal design power the i7 would probably overheat fast. And that is just the start, with processors the thermal design power is linked to the voltage they use, so not only could you have problems with the processor overheating, you could also be looking at having to find a power supply cappable of handling a higher wattage and with the right adapter to work with your laptop.

For these reasons alone you are usually better off just replacing the laptop with one capable of handling the tasks you want it to, rather than upgrading.

Good luck with whichever choice you make.

Hi Vladothir.9362,

You do not need a code, you have registered and username and password with that code linked to it. once the game is downloaded you’ll be able to just login like normal.

you can also save yourself a ~15GB download by copying your GW2.dat file to an external drive/ memory stick then copy it back over to your new windows install.

infact you can copy the entire guild wars 2 game folder over.

good luck and enjoy the ssd.

Hi Siladius.6452

I would take any advice about replacing your entire computer with a pinch of salt. Your PC isn’t as bad as others may want you to think. I personally have the 2.8GHz version of your processor and 4GB of ram also. The biggest difference between our systems is that I have a fairly beefy graphics card to accompany my processor.

Now I am overclocking my CPU so that I can get the best frame rate possible from my system whilst playing World-vs-World. However at stock speeds I could easily play this game with 40-60fps in a mixture of medium and high settings (mostly high textures) in PvE mode. If you cannot afford to buy a new computer then adding a dedicated graphics card to your current one could be enough to play the game in PvE 30-45fps on low/medium settings. Overclocking my CPU has turned my system into allowing medium settings + high textures and shaders (including SuperSampling) at 50-60fps.

This would depend on the graphics card you chose and you would certainly have to do a bit of your own research as your computer would perhaps also need an upgraded power supply to handle the addition of a dedicated graphics card.

A new power supply may also unlock overclocking potential (depending on other hardware such as motherboard) which would also help your FPS in game.

So like I said, you do have options available to you, and I would certainly take caution of any advice giving on these forums because I certainly would not say that you absolutely had to buy an entire new computer just to play this game.

You cannot get anymore trait points you have to choose were to spend them wisely. You can reset your traits so that you have 70 to spend again and choose different options, to do this speak to your profession trainer.

Anyone even playing Toypocalypse?

in Wintersday

Posted by: Nitro.4732

Nitro.4732

When I first did the Toypocalypse event I was extremely frustrated and angry, I didn’t know what I was doing and I was struggling to win. I didn’t even know you could smash the houses to get snow or scrap, so I was just bashing toys with my toysmasher. A few minutes googling and reading online changed that, I learned what the new tools could do and how important snow and scrap were. With that knowledge I went back, the first few games I joined were over (in terms of the achievement anyways) either they had 1 Dolyak alive or there wasn’t enough players. So I would leave and re-join and the very first time I joined and got a full group and the event to just begin, we did it. I then realised just how easy the achievement was to get and why Anet chose to set it like so.

When I heard the news about them giving the achievement away, I was even more angry compared to when I was originally. It felt like my entire efforts and research and practice and been wasted. I could have sat around crying and waiting for Anet to just give up and hand it too me. I remember saying to myself why not 3 dolyaks, that way at least there is a compromise. What is the point of having achievements in the first place if you don’t need to do anything to achieve them.

I am angry at that decision, fair enough I understand peoples frustration but this community is starting to act like babies, instead of doing the work involved they rather cry and whine until anet hands out stuff for free. I think next special event I shall just wait and whine all day on the forums instead of putting any effort into my achievements then anet might just give me them anyways. Since then I haven’t set another foot back in to the Toypocalypse, and because I cannot join my friends to help them with the achievement, There is no incentive for me to go back.

Sorry if this comes across as me being rude, I am simply trying to express my frustration and give anet so critic feedback.

Hi Rahxephonroh.6195,

Are you planning on copying blu-ray dvds? if not I would ditch the blu-ray rewriter and just get a blu-ray reader/ dvd rewriter combo drive. This would save you some money which could help towards my next idea.

The system you are building is roughly what I want to upgrade to and I reckon that it will run Guild Wars 2 great and even better if you are overclocking the CPU (I am assuming this since you are buying the “K” version of the processor).

Other games will run great too. Perhaps look for people with similar setups posting their “Can You Run It” results for different types of games.

My next idea was that you would gain better performace (yet again) if you bought 2x 120GB SSD’s rather than one 240GB. You could then place them in a raid 0 configuration. There may be a slight price difference but the money saved from not buying a blu-ray rewriter should cover that.

If not another Idea would be to buy a known CPU cooler to provide good overclocking results for the CPU. I have not seen how the Thermaltake CL-P0466 SpinQ performs on this CPU but most website recommend other ones for better cooling.

Hope this helps in your decision.

Good luck

Nitro.4732

Hi Kacey,

You are using a laptop if I’m not mistaken (Indicated by the mobile “M Series” CPU/GPU combo). The only way for you to upgrade would be to buy a new laptop.

You’re best bet to save money would be to stop trying to run the game on absolutely max details and sacrifice a few things to gain a balance between looks and performance.

for example a lot of the settings can be disabled or put to low with a few on High and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Update: I noticed you confirmed that you were using a laptop but have the availability to change out graphics. Even though you have this option I reckon the reason your experience low FPS is because of a mixture of things such as, CPU bound processes in the game, culling issues, and large population due to the christmas event, max settings (including terrain and shadow settings which are bugged and cause low fps). The CTX460M is still a powerful graphics card but your CPU is what is being used the most in this game and with a single thread performance of 2.0GHz, thats what I would look into first.

If you can take a screenshot of the port forwards page on your router I can check they are done correctly.

Yes, and thank you for your help! Comcast
I have the NetGear WNR 2000 V3
Its Cable internet.
Not sure how to get my ISP #.

Your ISP is Comcast you stated that at the beginning of your post. I have did a little research for you and would like to suggest that you try the following steps.

  1. Disable your SPI Firewall, this is built into your Netgear WNR2000 so you will need the username and password to configure that. Here is a guide I found online which tells you the default username/password combination if you have not changed them already.
    http://www.ehow.com/how_6898516_disable-spi-firewall-netgear.html
  2. Portforward the correct ports used by Guild Wars 2 into your routers configuration.
Here is another step-by-step guide. http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/WNR2000/Guild_Wars_2.htm
  3. Search for any options in your router configuration pages about Quality of Service (QoS) Please also test with this enabled and disabled. This service can limit internet traffic or priortise other internet traffic it thinks is more important. Guild Wars 2 is fairly new and may not be properly recognised by QoS technologies.
  4. If you know how to change the DNS servers that are configured in your router (unfortunately I couldn’t find a guide for this). Change them to use OpenDNS.com
Its a free service and will test to see if your current ones are the problem.
The addresses required to use OpenDNS are:
  • 208.67.220.220

310.70 is the latest non beta (WHQL)

310.70 is a beta driver, just checked on nvidia.com 2 minutes ago. the latest WHQL Signed Driver it offered me was 306.97 for 400 series and 600 series selections.

Anyways 306.97 fixes the problem, I was trying out the beta 310.70 when I noticed the glowing textures, I went back to 306.97 and I no longer have that problem.

Wintersday Jump Puzzle

Nitro.4732

Hello,

I wanted to show my appreciation to everyone behind the scenes at ArenaNet. I really enjoy this game, so much that everyday I look forward to winding down from a hard days work and settling in to play a relaxing game. I especially love the jump puzzles as they offer a challenge and they give you a great sense of achievement when you final complete one.

So far my faviourate jump puzzle has to be the wintersday one, it seems to have a great balance between difficulty and fun factor, I like the fact that I wasn’t being stressed out trying to reach the end in time, I liked the halloween clock tower and I completed that too! Somehow though the wintersday jump puzzle hit the sweet spot, It was challenging and had my adrenaline going, but most of all it was fun and entertaining.

I especially like the fact that even though I completed the jump puzzle I feel compelled to return to it because of the multiple paths, I can redo the jump again but take a different route! That also helped keep the crowds thin also. Just for some proof I have a wintersday capture to remind me, I achieved the wintersday 2012 jump puzzle.

so thank you to everyone that made this jump puzzle possible!

Anyone find a fix for this issue yet? It is driving me nuts lol

Install the latest stable version (i.e. Non-Beta) of your graphics drivers. If that is Nvidia then you should be currently on version 306.97

I think they should silently release event content through patches before anouncing the event that way people are slowly but surely getting the content through multiple patches leading up to the event in their own time, rather than telling everyone the event start on the 14th then releasing the content on the same day… ofcourse there are going to be surges of players trying to get the same content downloaded.

Hi Kootz.3479

Quality of Service (QoS) is not something that is installed along with Guild Wars 2, It is a common feature on many routers. It is also an extremely difficult technology to get 100% correctly working with all types of internet traffic. If your router has a QoS option and its enabled you can safely disable this to test if this indeed is the source to your current issue.

There is also a known Issue with some Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) Firewalls built into routers aswell, so if you see this option on your router’s configuration page you might aswell test this option disabled aswell.

Finally, there are also a few network ports that Guild Wars 2 specifically uses and some routers do not automatically forward these ports. Normally if the Automatic Forwarding known as Universal Plug and Play (UPNP) is disabled, then you can manually forward these ports on the router’s configuration page also.

Here is what ArenaNet have to say:
In addition, Guild Wars 2 requires TCP ports 80, 443, 6112 and port 6600 be fully unrestricted and accessible, both inbound and outbound. For further information about opening ports or port forwarding, you can visit the following website: http://www.portforward.com

Good luck,

My computer runs on a Core 2 Quad, and even running at default clock speed (2.83GHz) I can get 40-60FPS in WvW just fine. Outside in PVE I get an average of 59FPS according to fraps with lowest being 49fps and highest being 62fps.

A core 2 Quad would run the game fine, however I would not advise buy one nowadays simply because for their price you can get a new, better Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge based processor.

hi ya,
Ports forwarded are: TCP80, TCP443, TCP6112 & TCP6600

Hi NITEVIPER.9652

Can you also check that the UDP Protocol is forwarded for these ports also not just TCP. I would also remove the port 80 and port 443 forward rules as these are usually not required to be forwarded, so test with those two removed.
Also if your router has Quality of Service (QoS) then temporary disable this and see if this helps, It may have the game classified as low priority traffic.

If you have settings for SPI Firewall then also test with this disabled as a few other members have reported this solving network related problems with their game.

It’s not the router’s issue. With 300,000 sessions available, it’s the client that’s the issue, not the router.

What is your router make and model, lots of routers claim they can handle hundred thousand plus sessions but the true fact is the cpu in the router just cannot handle the load. Also just because your routers session table can store upto 300,000 sessions, it does not guarantee the hardware can match this.

Plenty of ISP provided hardware ( “Freebie Routers” ) are built using cheap CPU’s and little onboard ram, typically they are lucky if they can handle 1000 sessions.

The issue most people in this thread are discussing points to the typical symptoms of a router under stress and being forced to reboot.

Well If you are planning on just redownloading the game without looking into why your computer crashed in the first place, then take this next advise more seriously.

When your download the game, stop it and close the game downloader every hour and make a duplicate of the gw2.dat that way if the bluescreen returns you only lose roughly 1 hour of download time rather than starting from stratch again.

However the problem with the bluescreen won’t just disappear, the computer is telling you something is not right and to ignore it can create worse problems in the future, for example having to reinstall windows from scratch and/or losing all data, files, pictures, apps, movies etc from the PC.

Its your choice, If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but if its broke don’t leave it

Hi Vexator.2084

As far as I know, the reason it starts from scratch is because the built in file repair failed to recover/fix the gw2.dat file. Currently I am only aware of one solution to this issue, and you are not going to like its answer.

If I were you I would figure out what caused the bluescreen first as this indicates that your computer is currently not stable. After fixing your bluescreen issue, I would then redownload the game again (or get the game on DVD). Once the game is finished downloading you can make a duplicate copy of the GW2.dat file to an external hard drive or memory stick incase you ever find yourself in the same situation again.

Sorry for the bad news I know what it feels like, the same problem happened to me except GW2.exe froze (no bluescreen) but kept causing me to redownload all the game files from stratch also and this was two nights before the Lost Shores event was due to start. I eventually caved in and bought the DVD to get the files to copy over instead of downloading for a fifth time (I only have 4mbit internet access). I then gave the second serial to a friend as a christmas gift so he could play along with me.

Hi Caped Crusader.6148,

I did a quick google search to find out how AMD PowerTune works. I personally have never owned a ATi/AMD Graphics card before so I cannot give you a direct answer to your issue. My search stumbled upon this website: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4061/amds-radeon-hd-6970-radeon-hd-6950/9

The review/guide was written in 2010 so the information provided there may now be out of date, However I hope it does help you.

According to the guide PowerTune cannot be turned completely off, However its Limits for activation can be increased higher than the ATX standard, simply meaning it prevents it activating until it reaches an unreachable limit.

Good Luck

Nitro.

Hi Krulz.6245

In stead of running your game at 60FPS limited. Enable Verticle Sync this will cause your game to still run at 60fps as the verticle refresh rate of your monitor is most likely 60Hz, you should notice a drop in GPU usage which will result in the GPU running at a lower temperature.

It is also a good Idea to perhaps check the graphics card itself for excessive dust, dirt or grime to make sure nothing is clogging the fans and that the fans indeed work.

If you are brave enough you could even replace the thermal compound on the card by following online guides (a quick google search resulted in the following link http://nvidiagtx295.blogspot.co.uk/ )

GPU underclocking while playing

Nitro.4732

Hi Caped Crusader.6148

The issue you are describing reminds me of one with Nvidia cards. Both AMD and Nvidia have “adaptive power” modes (I believe AMD’s is named PowerTune). These modes reduces power and underclock the graphics cards when the driver detects very little need for the GPU to be running at full performance. If a game doesn’t use much of the GPU at certain points in a game, there could be fluctuations in the adaptive power driver. It just so happens that there are many players on these forums currently experiencing a bug in the game that for whatever reason seems to drop GPU usage.

If you were experiencing this problem then the Adaptive Power technology could downclock the graphics card and then when your game needs more performance its suddenly not there, in turn then affecting your overall FPS.

The simplest way to prevent this happening on the Nvidia side was to create an Application profile in the graphics driver for guild wars 2 so that when GW2.exe was running the graphics card would run in full performance mode rather than adaptive performance mode.

Perhaps the same can be done for AMD graphics cards also. I know AMD have “Catalyst Application Profiles” so you might want to make sure you have the latest version of those or if you can, manually create an Application Profile for GW2.exe.

Good luck,

Nitro

Before doing anything as drastic as “pulling it apart” I would check how long you have owned the laptop and if it still has a valid warranty from its manufacturer. If it does then get them involved, if they prove it to be a hardware problem then they will have to repair or replace it under warranty.

GW2 Downloader Reset

Posted by: Nitro.4732

Nitro.4732

Aicus, Closing the downloader is fine. The reason you had to redownload all 225k files was because the gw2.dat was corrupted by the power loss you experienced. Closing the downloader will save the files properly then exit.

The conclusion I made from that is it did not saves my progress. So I don’t want to take the risk.

If this is true then the game would be having write access issues or permissions problem. Something does not seem quite right if that was the case. If the file remained there but forced you to redownload it again after closing the downloader then it could indicate problems with the hard drive itself.

It could be a permissions issue with the directory you were downloading too, ArenaNet advised during the beta period to download to your desktop them move the folder to wherever afterwards.

I fixed it, was a heating issue with CPU. My heat sink wasn’t properly set because of that my CPU wouldnt go into turbo mode. Getting solid 60+ FPS. Thanks for all the advise.

FYI i have a i7 920. So it’s 2.3Ghz

This would make sense then since the CPU was probably being throttled back to 1.9GHz to lower the voltage to help lower temperatures. Its always a wise choice to check your PC over once a month for a quick dust out and make sure everything is still seated properly.

I have quite a few fans in my computer and the amount of dust it gathers is unbelievable sometimes. I have filters in front of the fans so every fortnight I clean them and check the rest of the internals once a month just to keep on top of things.
