Not just what GW2 chose, it’s what playing a role in a game is all about. It’s an RPG. You, the player, can’t be a faceless nobody. You necessarily must be a somebody in the story because it’s an RPG, and an RPG must give the player a role to play. Now that role doesn’t have to be the biggest, bestest, greatest character in the universe, I’m not the Queen of Kryta or a human god or a leader of a Charr legion, but it does have to be something the player feels is worth playing as.

Eh, they could create a game in which you play an exceedingly comon personal with no special abilities or skills and no important ties, the role of a grunt souldier who accomplishes maindane meager feats and moderate accomplishment that are far from note worthery… but that wouldn’t really be interesting, and is a direct contradiction as to why we play games in the first place.

and that’s the main character, the hero, you. It is impossible to create a narritive in which there is no main character, but 2000 people are given equal footing, it would be pure chaos and not resemble a story in the slightest.

Yes, but what I question is why there is need to create the illusions that I am this hero?
Because that in turn adds the difficulty of making everyone think they’re the hero, and that sounds mighty stupid as soon as you group up.

While I didn’t like Trahearne much for reasons of his VO and cheesy dialogue, I saw nothing wrong with letting a NPC be the hero. It’s a pretty nifty idea. Removes the need to have all this hero-illusion bloat just to pretend you’re a single-player RPG.

Simple: We’re a group~battalion of adventurers. For purposes of needing a singular character for say, a killing blow, have a known and established NPC do that.
It’s pretty easy. The issue with Trahearne really wasn’t the idea, just the execution. Tree-horn was a terrible character. The dialogue was really bad, the voice acting was spotty at best and to non-sylvari he was never introduced. But the concept still worked, so I’m stumped why they’d abandon it.

Well, except ofc the endless whine on the forums how they could dare to not make each PC their own little-mind-world hero

No, from the begining, we were always the main character…. I mean, you don’t seriously think the members of destiny’s Edge have 2000 close and personal friends, or that there is 2000 commanders of the pact, which is second in command or the entire organizations army (which would be like having 2000 five star generals, when in US history we dont even have 100, not to mention 2000 at one time), that there’s six hundred heroes of shamore, each and every one of which having struck the decisive blow to save the town?

no, I can believe there are 5~25 commanders of the pact, that there are 3~6 heroes who worked together to save shamore, and another 3~6 for each of the other nations, who saved that respective nation, I can believe that destinys edge has 5~25 close and personal friends… and I chose to believe, those other heroes/adventurers who acomplish these feats with me, at my side, are my personal friends and guild mates, and that everyone else I pass is just an everyday soldier, soldiers under my command even… otherwise, the story makes no sense.

You don’t want to be the main character… but unfortunatly you have been from the start, that’s simply what gw2 chose.

Any of the instances can be soloed, but they can also be done with up to a party of five, which scales in dificulty just like personal story. Also, this episode had many group events that may be soloed, but are deffinitly easier with more people, and, just like the instances, scale with more participents.

you have no argument. obviously using only 1 button makes things harder, but it doesn’t make them “hard”

Once again, you really need to sort out your reading deficiency, as I never said the battle was difficult in the first place, rather, quite clearly, I stated it was not hard. Though, I’m glad you agree that using only the 1 skill puts you at a disadvantage.

Otaku, people throw around the ‘just stand around and mash 11111’ nonsense to try and justify their own opinion on how supposedly terrible this game is. Or how supposedly terrible other players are…

Yes, and its very annoying… when I played gw1 for about a year that was the main reason players there gave me for hating gw2, that the skills were all useless and that there’s no tactics in the game (because you cant chose which skills to use with each weapon)… on the other hand, I think the fact that each weapon has a set of skills that are good for some environment/opponionts, but terrible for others, forces players to think about and combine their two chosen weapons to match the given situation… which, is essenually the same thing they did by composing skills, only that by making skills locked to each weapon, the game in fact becomes harder, as you can’t pull the best skills together to create that perfect combo.

I guarantee you can do all the achievements for this fight with the 1 key and the dodge button.

Not true at all… now I’m not saying the fight is hard, but in most cases -depending on your class, stats, traits, weapon, armor, trickets, sigils and runes- for the average casual player at the very least, the 1 key alone will not kill the statue mender fast enough to stop him from mending the statue. Then, even if you can complete the battle with only the 1 key, it would be a much slower, longer, drawn out process, as the other skills deal more damage, so what is the point?

At any rate, you missed the point of my arguement, which was simply stating, that each skill in gw2 does have a valid use and purpose, and when imployed properly they can make fights faster and easier.

I charge you (or anyone who will take up this challenge) do the battle twice, once with only the 1 key, nothing else, and once by employing each skill to their fullest potential. Time each session and see how long it take you to complete it… if you complete it.

Actually, there are numerous differences, starting with your very first point:
~this dragon does not currupt every living thing, only things in nature, or more specifically, only thinks that grow with vines, roots, branches and stems… that being said it can corrupt a slyvair hound but not its counterpart, the flesh and blood wolf. With beings of flesh and blood itdoes not corrupt, only kill, and quite possibly devour the energy/nutrients of… this make mordremoth greatly different from any other dragon.

~this dragon is attacking wps… which, while prehaps the other dragons are capable, none have bothered to try thus far. This is actually a far greater threat then it seems, as it cuts off not only travel and commerse between the cities; but supplies, reinforcements, and communications. basically, if the dragon has control over the waypoint network, all cities are cut off, and will be forced to fend off the dragons forces alone. the three orders and the pact will be greatly disadvantaged, as they will lose speed and manoverability, greatly starving their effeciency and making it so that situations where they could otherwise quickly deploy and save the day, will instead arive too late. this is indeed why modromoth is the greatest threat thus far/currently. so rather than attacking the people like the other dragons, he is attacking our network, the system by which we have means to repell him.

0_0 rly there are some people who cant win this fight ?! My friend on nomand guard did this instance in circa 11 min . Now I understand why Anet doesn`t want to increase difficulty on pve(which anyway is pathetic standing and 111111)

Bulkitten… I’m really tired of people saying gw2 is all about jamming the 1 key, and that the other skills are useless… first of all, jamming/spaming 1 is pointles, because if you lock on target, after hitting the 1 key once, it will do it infinitly thereafter without your help, so there is no need to hit the key more than once.

Secondly, let me use the ranger long bow as an example to prove how many skills are useful, and how they can be imployed:
~Skill 2 is just like skill one, only it does the damage much faster, and each consecutive strike is move powerful, so basically a faster, stronger attack that helps pour in the dp and down enemies sooner.
~Skill 3 is a crippling skill, it makes your oponiont slower, and thus really helps in situations where you need to keep the enemy from reaching a target, giving you the extra couple of seconds needed to kill it. In this particular battle, the cripple skill should be saved for the mendor, as it proves very effective in this situation.
~Skill 4 is a kockback, one of the most useful, yet highly -and unfairly- controled skills in the game. While the initial damage may be mute, its potential to knock oponionts off a cliff or into lava is really what makes it worth its slot, capable of killing an oponiont instantly. …unfortunatly, while enemy npcs are given free reign to use this tactic on us, the enemies in any given location where this tactice becomes pliable, are imune to kockbacks. Thus making the skill all but useless and crippling the balance in the game. on the other hand, a knockback can still be used in this particular situation to slow down the mendor just as the crippling skill does, and when the two are combined, they are very effective.
~Skill 5 is a aoe skill that hits any and every enemy within the target range, and is thus very useful when dealing with mobs. Also, the fact that it continues to rain down arrows even after you stop fireing volleys alows you to continue dealing damage to one target while moving to access another. A good example of this is when you recieve the mendor alert, you can rain down skill 5 on the statue so that he continues recieveing damage while you deal with the mendor. In addition, those who are struggling to fend off the other ghost, or getting the neccessary kills to charge the great sword, can use this skill to hit numberous ghost at one time, and thus bring down the group faster.

That being said, when used properly, all gw2 skills have a tactical use and can make game play much easier/faster. Even outside of combat they have uses, such as the greatswords leap skill which allows you to quickly traverse great distances, and make otherwise hard jumps.

I actually think it is nice to have a mix of instanced and open world play, as it tailors to more players wants, giving them a chance to present to us a balanced flow of solo player and multiplayer content. With this, those who love big open world events that require couperation and organization like the twisted marionete, and those who enjoy soloing, or prefer playing with their guild or small group of friends can all be appeased. certainly, not every event/instance will be for everyone, but by mixing it up like this they can meet a variety of player preferences.

I look forward to a living story that bounces back and forth between:
-solo~party of five (based on player preference) instances
-open world events that can be soloed or completed by a small group, but scale upĀ in dificulty with more players
-massive multiplayer group events that require numerous players and firm couperation
-dungeons

All it takes is one simple assumption by the player for instanced story telling to make sense. You recognize that your character is the hero and that other players aren’t in your story. It just takes a very brief suspension of disbelief (so to speak).

The problem is that given that I play a genre which’s distinguishing design element is that a nontrivial amount of other players are constantly around me, this is the one assumption you should not ask me to make.

Spacegoats in WoW? Fine.
Lasertech in my fantasy MMO? Fine.
But being the sole hero in a massive-multiplayer game? I wouldn’t be playing the genre in the first place then, would I?

No, you have to see it as, the other 2,000 players are the everyday citizens of tryia, the pact grunt soldiers, or low ranking officers at best; your personal friends and alts, would be other heroes that adventure and acomplish great feats with you; and your primary cbharacter is the main character of the story… otherwise, it doesn’t make sense. Plane and simply, 2000 people can’t all kill scarlet, they can all join in to fight her army and corner her, but in the end, inly one person can delivor the final blow, and that’s the main character, the hero, you. It is impossible to create a narritive in which there is no main character, but 2000 people are given equal footing, it would be pure chaos and not resemble a story in the slightest.

You seem to have missed the whole point, where I stated nothing of what you are currently being baffled about would be possible given it would severely alter the gameplay for new players, and that it is standard for Guild Wars 2 to be a bigg snowball of continuity mishappens, as per the ongoing conversation.

Oh? I seem to recall someone stating that there should be visible fractions among the Nightmare Court, that the Centaurs should be severely weakened; that the present maps should match the current story. Well if there are fractions among-st the Nightmare Court, they certainly aren’t all going to be partying in the same outpost.

Likely, during a rather bitter argument in the mess hall, gloves would be tossed and what would begin as a small scuffle would break out into an all out war, in effect destroying their current abode, and forcing the two sides to erect apposing structures on opposite ridges, with an event where they fight in the middle. Such an event would match the current Living Story, but would greatly alter the map in which it took place (with the unfortunate negative side effect of ruining the beginning personal story in that region)… which in essence, is what you’re asking for, is it not?

Snip.

So, basically you’re asking for a massive rewrite of all the maps; to completely alter the location, allegiances, and amount of enemy fortifications, the events, npc dialogue, and the hearts, to erase the past in favor for the present… do you know how much material they would be throwing out? How many man hours and spent budget would be wasted? Virtually all the art work, the terrain, would have to be trashed so that new content could be added in its place. The core of GW2 is its open world content, about 75% of the game is invested in that, and you want them to redo it all? That’s ridiculous. With budget and time restrictions its impossible, but more than that, it would be throwing out perfectly good content, enjoyable experience we could never revisit, and new players would be forced to miss out on all together.

Are you seriously telling me, that if in this update Rytlock releases all the ghost, you never want to be able to fight a ghost again? Or that if they redo Orr, to reflect the death of Zhiatan, you wont miss being able to capture temples?

Personally, when i’m playing the char personal story, I want to travel through an old Ascalon plagued by ghost and tainted by the searing; to play events and fight enemies that should be there, because my last and next story chapter tell me so, because the story flows better when meshed with the surrounding map… it doesn’t make sense otherwise. You talk about continuity, but how the hell is the story line to make sense in the beginning chapters when the beginning maps are dated in the long distant future?

GW2 has always been designed so that as you travel and adventure, as you move through each map towards the end of the story line, you are moving in time. From Divinity’s Reach east to Lion’s Arch, you grapple with your nations internal problems before moving on to join an order; and south from Lions Arch to Orr, you forge the pact, and thrust it into the heart of the dragon. The game has always been set so that each map was set in time, reflecting the personal story chapters that are their parallel; and you’re asking to redo all of that. Where would the continuity be then? Think of the replay-ability the game would lose, or how new players would be discouraged, unable to experience each chapter in its full glory and intensity, the worth of the content devalued. No, its far better that they add new maps, and let the time line continue there.

Having thuruoghly enjoyed this living story update, I still must admit, there is great room for improvement… just small things here and there that don’t add up; and for me, the biggest issue, was the closing conversation with my team. when I suggested we have an audience with the pale tree, they rebuke that I’m ‘reknown, but not that famous’, and ourcharacters replies something along the lines of ’we’ll find a way.’ And yet, we’ve already had a metting with the pale tree, and I can’t help but to think why didn’t our character say as much? he should have shrugged it off, and replied with, "well I’ve met her before, so it should be too hard’ or the likes. This is a minor issue at best, but it was something of note none the less.

I’m saying “consume all” can potentially break an RNG.

I get what you mean, but what I’m saying would be purely optional and not only for RNG items but also for non RNG items.

Even if it was optional, how do you make sure each player understands the ramifications of opening all their boxes at one time? You would get so many complaints from players who did it and didn’t read the tooltip or whatever. It wouldn’t be worth it.

I do agree that it would work for things like Luck which always gives you the exact same thing though.

And as mentioned an addition to the UI to purchase a number at one time would be great.

Just don’t include ring boxes then, because ease and comport aside, it is a health issue. Clicking 100,000 times really piles on the pressure on your fingers and wrist, and aside from being painful, can cause permanant side effects.

Example: at least 4 instances take place in your home instance, multiply that by five races and you have 20 instances… but you don’t need 20 map coppies for that, as nothing changes terrain-wise between each revisited instance, thus bringing the required maps down to 5, one for each home city. So claiming you would have to make 100s of coppies because you have 100s of instances is rediculous.

Just program the [unknown number] of instances that took place in the old kessex hills, to use the old kessex hills map coppy; and the [unknown number] of instances that use the new kessex hills, to use the new kessex hills map coppy.

Lions arch will be the only problem as certain story instances use it at different phases of: winter undestroyed, holoween undestroyed, lost shores destruction, dragon bash undestroyed, natural undestroyed, destroyed assualt, destroyed post assualt, clean up, and the eventual new lionsarch… but even that would only require 9 map coppies total, no, only 6 of them actually have instances, and only one of them can be revisited at this time (natural undestroyed for personal story), so that would only require two coppies of the map to exist, the current and the natural undestroyed.

Yes, there are hundreds of story instances, but many take place on the same map, or even the same zone of the same map, so you don’t have to make a coppy of your entire map for each instance; either make 1 coppy of each original map, 25 coppies total (you wouldn’t even need that much, as not every map has an instance, and furthermore, not every instance is effected by living world changes, so there’s no need to make coppies of unaffected maps) or you could simply coppy each affected instance zone (not the entire map, just a cookie cut out of the zone involved in the instance). You can still save the old versions of maps and have them accessable without too much data if you play it smart.

well in that case, yes it’s kinda silly. i haven’t touched personal story since before living story was a thing, so i wouldn’t know. stuff like using the current lion’s arch is ok, but i imagine going to concordia and having those freaking vines everywhere would be a bit jarring.

HOWEVER.

i’m still heavily, heavily against phasing. i’d rather new users be like “what’s up with the vines” than not have vines at all, and i’d rather have vines messing specific personal story instances than have the userbase split into a bunch of smaller shards like elder scrolls online did (and everyone hated that). keeping the community together is the most important thing. making sure the world evolves with time is the second.

Whether the vines should stay or not, isnt the point of this thread. I agree, they should be present in the world map (until such a time that an event renders them obsolete), and they should be present in the current living story instance; but they should not exist in the personal story instance; yet they do. This is due to the way instances are mechanically built, creating a coppy of the current active map, and giving no thought to how the area looked during the time the instance took place, and thus should look while you are within. And that, is what needs to change.

…it is?

the personal story instances, to the best of my knowledge, take place in the “old” versions of those maps. the pathfinding rework alone that would be required to retrofit personal story every time lion’s arch is changed (counting festivals, there have been 6 different versions of it so far, excluding minor changes) is enough to keep personal story “static” and stuck in the past.

You obviously did not read my post correctly, instances are created on the spot using the current existing terrain. This means, if an instance from personal story took place in a fort next to a volcano, and in living story that volcano had an eruption, thus destroying the fort, anyone playing personal story, would be performing a mission in a fort that does not exist. Still don’t see any problems with that?

No, I’m not saying that they shouldn’t constantly change and evolve their world, but if they are going to do so, they need a new system for instances.

Unstable Instance Mechanics

in Living World

Posted by: OtakuModeEngage.8679

OtakuModeEngage.8679

Instances in GW2 are created by taking a portion of the current/existing map and temporarily creating an exact copy to be used as a personalized zone available only to you and a team of up to four additional players. Initially, this was not a bad system, as the file sharing allowed them to recycle the available maps rather than create new zones all together. However, now that Living Story is revisiting past locations of Personal Story instances, and drastically altering the terrain (which in itself is not a bad thing), it has become a big problem. Every instanced place that is being reused for living story, is destroying the infrastructure, the base foundations of the game, and thereby massively crippling the immersion.

The gathering of mentors in Lions Arch, at which time should have been a lively, vibrant trade city, untouched by Scarlet’s wrath, is now a desolate wasteland. Your first meeting with Trahearn at Fort Concorida, which should have taken place just after establishing the pact, and long before anyone had heard tale of Scarlet, not to mention Mordroth’s awakening, is now crumbling at the onslaught of his vines. Its like building in Venice; each new residence, atop the previous, just causing the city to sink deeper and deeper, until nothing of the original city is left, until the sheer mass atop the unstable base, causes the entire structure to collapse.

I urge you to stop before you destroy yourself; find another means of creating instances, and don’t drag your own story into a dark abyss simply by extending it on rocky foundations. Create stand-alone instances that are permanently programmed in the game, and do not require the system to draw a copy from the current existing map. Do it before its too late, because if you continue upon this road, the continuity and stability of each instance will shatter, and the story will suffer for it.

lol, people complain about not being important, so they make you the ‘boss’ then people complain about that too; there’s no wining.

Well for me, this is a plus, I don’t mind being a mob boss; it adds a bit of depth to my character persona.

Yes, another one of those threads

no you cant have my stuff, rofl ;-)

What better way to prove you are really quitting than giving away all your stuff. Send it to some new player with screen shots. Then I’ll believe you.

No, a new player wouldn’t comprehend how valuable and useful your stuff is and probably would waist it; send it to me instead.

I agree very much. And in no way am I insinuating that women should not be able to dress how they please. In fact, I am a firm believer in responsibility over one’s own eyes. Eg. just because someone is dressed in a revealing outfit, does not mean you need to be staring at their cleavage or eyeballing their testicles. If they want to dress that way you cannot blame them for where your eyes take you, since they have no control over where your eyes look.

What a farce. I’m sorry, but while I agree that women have a right to wear whatever they want; if you’re going to wear next to nothing, you should expect men to stare, because there is no way they wont. There is a certain responsibility that comes with an attire; if your attire exposes your body in a sexual manor, then you are creating a sexual connotation with that attire, and as such, are allowing -if not asking- for a sexual response. Its not a debate, its how the human mind and hormones are programmed to work.

…on the other hand, the more something is exposed and made readily available, the less people desire it. For example, when Daisy Dukes were first introduced, men were obsessed over seeing women wear them, but now that such short-cut clothes is common place, we are far less drawn to them. Still attractive yes, but as we see it everyday, its nothing to stare at or hunger for. Similarly, European countries that have far more lenient policies on nudity have far less sex crimes, because desires are made readily available rather than being denied and pent up. To this ends, if society changed its laws so that everyone was allowed to go around naked, being naked wouldn’t be such a big deal.

IE; a pervert with a fetish of stripping people down, could no longer strip people down. Or even if he found someone currently clothed, the fetish would lose its kicks, as most people are naked anyways.

Though, in that same regard, it would devalue how special it is to be naked with a lover… as if you do with everyone, it no longer means anything to do it with that person. Everything in moderation is a must. Well, we are moving far off topic with this argument.

The one thing I did find really irksome, was that the trailer showcasing the Zeferites explosion and plummet didn’t make it into the game as a cut scene. That was such an epic video, and yet… they didn’t make use of it. You simply walk into the new map and find it destroyed. Just another example of story content posted on their website but left out of the actual story.

Yes, it would be nice if they added some cut scenes into the mix to show the action, rather than talking it out all the time, but my original statement still stands, they are finally turning this ship around.

Katana greatsword skin?

A Katana is a type of Nihonto, or, as we know it, a Japanese sword. There are numerous Nihonto that have the same shape and appearance as a Katana, but a Katana specifically refers to a sword that would be similar in length to a European Long Sword. A Katana can be wielded both single-handedly, or with both hands, but using both gives more control and strength. When paired with a Wakizashi (the equivilent to a Europian Short Sword in length), the two swords are known as a Daisho, which is what is commonly used in duel-bladed Japanese swordplay. Likewise, a Tanto (equivalent to a combat knife), and a Odachi/Nodachi (a 2-haned weapon equivalent to a claymore) also share a Katana’s shape.

Combat and Exposition Instances!!

There have been a number of griping threads, so I just wanted to throw out another complement to Anet, on the new methods they are employing in season 2. The mixture of combat and exposition based instances, connected by a string of open-world NPC’s and clues, insures not only that all the information and story material is in game, but that we as players see it. Moreover, everything flows more fluidly, as we are lead as if on a trek, or adventure through the terrain from one instance to another.

It is a much fuller, and far more enjoyable experience watching the story play out before you when everything is instanced, rather than random large scale world events, that -while certainly on a scale of epic proportions- simply have no means of pushing a narrative. The quality has greatly improved since season 1, and I feel you are moving in the right direction, so please keep up the good work!!

Logged in, but story not unlocked?

You don’t have to have a lvl 80 to unlock it, just have to have an 80 to play it(unlock it for that specific character). I unlocked it for my little brothers account, and he has no 80s. …but waiting until the day of a new patch to unlock it, was really a bad idea.

Edit: just reread your post OP… so it seems like when you logged on it did unlock, but then when you went to double check in your journel, it wasn’t there… if so, that is because the specific charcter is not 80, and thus does not have it unlocked for that charcter, which is why you cannot see it… that doesn’t mean it didt unlock for the account. just level someone to 80, then it will appear in the journel.

Phoenix, profane, aurora, apprentice and inquest aren’t even skimpy either, that’s honestly just clutching at straws. Cleavage =/= skimpy

I was leaving the book wide open, for deffinite and indeffinite definitions, as various people see skimpy or revealing in different ways. If I want a solid arguement that everyone will concede to, then I must lable anything that MAY be concidered skimpy, as such. The main complaint about being skimpy is that the armor bears too much flesh, and thus no longer protects you, in this regard, I listed all armor that greatly shows flesh, even if that flesh is only their arms and legs(aurora), which leaves a big weakness zone.

If they were going to do it, though, it should have been done during Festival, not now. Right now, focus is supposed to be on the living world story. Story-wise, we don’t have time to come help LA because we’re too busy on the other side of the world.

Only time it could have logically happened is during down-time.

With what funds? The whole point of hosting the bazaar was the gathering of funds neccisary to repair LA. And logically speaking all the npcs building LA, the everyday common folk, would not stop production just because we go off adventuring to find clues that may lead to a dragon. (We know it does, our characters can only asume, thoughit would be an assumption fairly dictated in logic) all I’m saying is that while passing through town, or taking an extended leave of absense, we can pitch in a hand.

Bonus anet points if they let us build with bloodstone bricks (someone else’s idea- I just re-mention it here)

That was me. XD

“Tired of LA being constantly attacked and destroyed? Rebuild with Bloodstone Bricks for that extra-magical resilience! Sponsored by the Players with too much Bloodstone Dust Alliance.”

There’s an alliance??? Where can I join?
