One Day Sales...

Pandaman.4758

Maybe they did, but they also managed to anger a bunch of their players. Does the extra sales they may or may not have made make up for the loss of good will among the players they deliberately frustrated?

Quite simply: yes.

This isn’t the first time they’ve done it and the fact they’re doing it again suggests they found the benefits outweigh the costs. For all your anger you’re still here posting on the forums and playing the game, the anger will eventually fade, and you’ll return to your spending habits – up until the next time you miss a 24-hour sale of something desirable, at which point the cycle resumes.

It’ll run GW2, for sure, but I just have to point out that CPU is only a dual core and the video card is a budget card: it’s going to be obsolete for pretty much any new game and putting liquid cooling on it is like installing an air conditioner in an igloo. Go with a standard heatsink and fan, you don’t need liquid cooling for that setup, especially since you aren’t overclocking (not that overclocking will do much for you).

This seems to be more appropriate in the PvP sub forum.

That being said – and I’m not saying this is the norm – but there’s something oddly satisfying about having a pug team that barely communicates stomping a guild team hard. Had that happen yesterday, don’t think I’ll ever see it again, but I’ll keep that warm, fuzzy feeling to my grave.

Pandaman.4758

This was actually addressed in a similar post a while back, but the official word is they can’t make some of the cutscenes skippable because those are the ones that generally involve characters moving around and things being triggered in response to them moving around. If they make those cutscenes skippable it would cause certain flags not to trigger and simply break the entire instance (doors that will never open, enemies that will never spawn, etc.).

ANet will have to figure out a reliable way to trigger everything that needs to be triggered, or a different way of using in-game assets to generate cutscenes, in order to make all cutscenes skippable; until then keep a magazine handy, I guess.

Forsaken were WoW. You may be thinking of the Forgotten, but there was nothing forsaken about them.

That would explain why I kept getting hits on WoW pages when trying to look up the Forsaken. kitten .

It is an interesting term, though – ‘Exalted’, to me, has divine connotations. Could be mursaat that heel-faced, could be Forgotten or some other race that ascended into an energy form like the druids did, could be a lot of things. It’ll be interesting to see.

Exalted also works as the opposite of Forgotten, rather than being a race that retreated into obscurity after serving the gods, they might be a new race created to usher the return on the gods.

Yep, that’s the problem with RNG: it’s inherently unfair.

How? It’s random, and everyone uses the same randomizing system. There is no advantage that one person has over another. So how is it inherently unfair?

It’s unfair in terms of effort-reward, not in terms of being unbiased.

The RNG only rewards luck, not effort, which is produces results where someone can acquire extremely good rewards with practically no effort (the old “I just got a precursor from a moa” outlier) and another never sees a precursor drop or MF result after playing heavily for two years. That’s quite simply unfair, there’s no other way to describe it.

That everyone is using the same RNG just means it’s being unbiased in ignoring everyone’s effort. It’s being fair in its unfairness.

Tome of Knowledge

Pandaman.4758

- Change? What change? It’s not even in the game yet.

Well, we know how mastery progression will be rewarded from the details that have already been released: every time you level past 80 it will progress a Mastery instead of giving you a skill point; we also know that Tomes of Knowledge work by giving you the current level’s maximum amount experience in one go; so preventing ToKs from giving the same rewards after level 80 as leveling normally means you’re changing the ToK’s function. The Mastery system doesn’t need to be implemented yet to recognize there will be a change to existing mechanics if such restrictions are announced.

- It strikes me incredibly reasonable that you have to actually do the work for your reward. You don’t play Legend of Zelda and complete FFVI with it.

You would if Legend of Zelda dropped “FFVI progress packs”

In all seriousness ToKs are rewards for the effort you put into the game (the ones that drop like flies from daily logins notwithstanding); you essentially exchange them for the rewards you would normally get from leveling up, whether it be the skill point for leveling up after 80 or progressing a low level alt. The Mastery system is changing that skill point reward to a progression reward, so ToKs should be giving you that progression reward after level 80.

And saying that has given me an epiphany, but I’ll explain after the next point.

It’s a pretty simple system that works (or should) in-game and IRL too. I also find it fair that people start from the same base.

At the risk of sounding pedantic I’d say that it’s impossible to be fair or start from the same base in an MMO unless we all get our levels reset and items wiped. I understand you want everyone who completes a Mastery to have put in exactly the same amount of effort as everyone else, but Masteries are about personal progress, it’s not a race to see who finishes first.

Now, about that epiphany I mentioned: we have to keep in mind that Masteries aren’t rewards, completing a Mastery doesn’t give you anything, it simply unlocks content. Completing the Itzel Lore Mastery unlocks the wyvern fights, the Legendary Precusor Mastery unlocks the grind to craft precursors, so on and so forth; it’s essentially no different than using ToKs to level up an alt to unlock access to new zones, gear, crafting recipes, etc.

If you have no qualms about someone using ToKs to unlock content for their alts, then there should be nothing objectionable about using ToKs to unlock content for their account (although I would agree that Masteries might be better as character unlocks than account unlocks, but that’s a whole other can of worms).

This newly found everybody is and should be a winner attitude makes me sick (general statement, not meant as an offesne against you presonally).

No offense taken!

So… for all the people who think tomes will NOT work… you expect ArenaNet to just say “Hey, sPvP players — your advancement stops dead at 80”? Because tomes are how you get XP playing in sPvP.

Yes, I expect it to be exactly that. As a matter of fact would get mad if it weren’t so.

Wait, hang on, why should you get mad at how others progress through the game? I can understand it if we’re talking about PvP or WvW where some someone being able to click a hundred times can suddenly have an advantage over you and thus negatively impact your experience, but this is PvE; how other people are getting their masteries done has absolutely no bearing on how you get masteries done, it’s not a zero sum game where them getting masteries somehow prevents you from doing the same.

So any displeasure you suffer from someone else maxing out a mastery through tomes is purely of your own creation and you’re asking to change their experience of the game based on this. Doesn’t that strike you as being incredibly unreasonable? Would you support any change that affects the rewards you’ve already earned simply because someone else doesn’t like it?

A bound screenshot does not work cause by the time I process what they are doing they have already ported to the next node.

So by the time they appear and start harvesting…you realize they are under not behind the node or their model just has not materialized yet and reach for the screenshot…they are gone.

There are some whats to mitigate that, like binding screenshot to a different key (likw maybe T, so your finger doesn’t have to travel far from F, or a spare button on your mouse if you have one with lots of extra buttons); it’s not a perfect solution, but will help and has the added bonus of letting you take screenshots on the fly for other you-had-to-be-there moments.

People want to play in other languages

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Pandaman.4758

Pandaman.4758

ArenaNet could allow fan translations. They just need to put in an override to load strings from a different file, then release a tool to edit that file. Someone could then translate it into whatever language and pass it around. This is assuming of course that the game can actually handle the other character sets.

While that’s theoretically a nice, crowdsourced solution, it’s potentially a legal minefield. ANet makes money from GW2, if they implement fan translations into the game that’s taking someone else’s (free) work and making a profit on it.

It’s tricky enough if you’re taking one person’s volunteer work and monetizing it, imagine what it would be like if you have dozens of different contributors from different countries, each with their own laws regarding compensation for services rendered; any money you save from hiring a translator is going to be sunk into lawyers vetting the legality of each contributing volunteer’s work – and that doesn’t even guarantee you the same quality and consistency that hiring a translator would bring (volunteers aren’t legally bound to actually finish translating all the work, after all).

Also if we’ve learned anything from the modding community, it’s that people will steal works and claim it as their own. There’s a case of someone stealing weapon meshes from a Skyrim mod, claiming it as their own, and selling it on Second Life – imagine what kind of legal headaches ANet would get into if a translator took someone else’s work and offered it to ANet. The theft wouldn’t even be realized until after it’s been implemented into the game and someone noticed it, which would lead to ANet having to pull the translation until they contact the actual translator and work out a deal.

I think the autoattack animation could stand to have a little variation to make it feel more brutal, a single animation makes the hammer look like it doesn’t have any weight to it. It doesn’t have to be an exaggerated stagger, but something to give that sense the character needs to shift their balance and grip to reverse the swing.

Currently it looks like they’re either swinging a light pole or bouncing it off an invisible wall every time they swing.

now, looking at the videos of HoT demo and screenshots, the exp bar is a very light yellow, almost white basically noting the fact that it’s different from normal exp, so I’m guessing the Tomes will just ignore the mastery system and still give a level/skill point

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/reimagining-progression-the-mastery-system/

“Because the Mastery training bar completely replaces the experience bar, players who’ve reached level 80 will no longer gain levels but will instead train Masteries. This means characters that have reached level 80 will no longer gain skill points through leveling. Skill points will be added as rewards across high-level content to offset this change.”

It’s unambiguous: when you gain a level past 80 you will progress in the mastery instead of gaining a skill point. It’s not covering up your experience progress, it’s changing the reward for your experience progress (post 80).

If there is some content that is unbeatable without mastery why would someone just lolligag around if they can click 1500 times and have it.

Because you have the ability to exert self-control?

You’re the one who doesn’t want to get mastery points just by clicking the tomes, so you should be the one not clicking on them, why does ANet have to change how an item works for everyone else in the game just to accommodate you? If you really can’t prevent yourself from doing something you don’t want to do, then how about just using up the tomes now to stockpile skillpoints? Failing that you could always use them up for keyfarming or have a friend come over to delete them for you.

You could always opt not to use the tomes for that purpose? They’re your tomes and it’s (barring any supernatural possession or transplant surgeries due to unfortunate accidents) your finger, just don’t spam click it, grind masteries the hard way, and keep the option to not grind them open. It’s always nice to have options.

Also nice to not have arbitrary and inconsistent restrictions imposed on game features to accommodate a subset of players. Leveling tomes give you enough experience to level up, that’s how they work and how they should continue to work; if that results in them giving something other than skill points post-HoT then so be it.

With great difficulty.

I’ve got controls set up for one-handed operation and I basically keep my alt in front of my main when I run, but it’s like steering drunk while in the back seat. I’ve only had the second account since the 75% sale though, so I haven’t bothered trying any dungeon content with it, but for open world PvE stuff it’s serviceable.

Multiboxing is fine as long as you are actively playing each account (not using bots or keyboard mirroring software to have one keystroke affect both characters). You cannot launch two instances of GW2 on the same PC without a third party software though and ANet does not offer support for such software, so use at your own risk.

Personally I have an old laptop set up for my second account.

Edit: And just so you can be completely reassured

Dual- or Multi-Boxing

1. You may use more than one account at the same time.
2. You may use more than one computer at the same time.
3. You must be actively playing on each account.
4. And as stated above, you may not program your keyboard to perform functions on more than one account at a time.
a. For example, if you press W on your keyboard to move forward, a single character on a single account should move forward. The keystroke or mouse click should not perform functions on more than one account.

actually, it’s really good for PvE too, there are plenty of monsters that can’t be KD/KB and are immune to any interrupt.
this change makes sure that when such an enemy can KB/KD a player they can do something about it, just try to attack centaurs when you just got KD, i was ones KD 3X in a row and there was nothing i could do about it.

You can do something about it, you can pop stability and wouldn’t have to worry about knockspam for a few seconds. Doesn’t matter if it was one or a hundred, you’d stay upright, but with this change you’d only stay upright for however many stacks of stability you have.

And at the risk of sounding cynical, ANet probably isn’t going to apply this to all the mobs. It’s likely going to be a mechanic only for bosses and mobs in the HoT maps, because if ANet was going to be consistent about mob and status mechanics they wouldn’t have made mobs who were immune to knock despite not having Defiance in the first place.

I won’t “name and shame”, but his name is along the lines of “Çïïiïïiïïiïïiïïiïiï”.

He hides to spam the emotes, you can’t right-click names in emotes, can’t spell the name unless you spend a few minutes to google up the characters and pick apart the name to spell it correctly, so most can’t ignore him unless they find him (at which point he just goes into stealth to break targeting and relocates).

So far it looks like he has three accounts to get around blocks, so even if you block one you’ll wind up getting spammed again later and have to go through the process of hunting for him or trying to spell his name to block him again.

Heaven forbid if gold sellers catch on to this strategy.

I haven’t found that to be terribly reliable, don’t know if it’s lag or what, but often I find they can continue charging through cripple AoEs for a second (long enough to bounce me out) before registering and that anti-projectile cloud they throw up also renders a lot of weapon cripple skills (rifle, shortbow, longbow) useless.

Stability is pretty much the only way I can survive if one catches me off guard, ignores my attempts to cripple it, or pegs me with their oversized hit-boxes while in mid-dodge.

And then somehow to and make it so the purchase of digital stolen goods becomes a crime and you can then legally take action against those involved and make it so they are fined.

There is no actual theft going on because everything is the property of ANet – it doesn’t matter if the virtual goods is on your character or someone else’s, it’s still on ANet’s servers. It’s ANet’s property and remains in ANet’s possession, thus you can’t make a case for the trafficking of stolen goods without first convincing a judge that ANet’s property is actually your property. This isn’t without precedence, but the only case I’m aware of is in Japan where a Chinese student was deported for “virtual robbery” because he was PKing people and taking their equipment to sell; as amusing as seeing a PK get their comeuppance, it’s actually quite scary when you think about it.

You can, however, make a good case for invasion of privacy, where the scammers are appropriating victims’ identifies for personal gain. The problem with such an approach (which your idea also would suffer from) is that it requires the victim to take legal action, but most (if not all) people would rather rage about it and/or quit the game than put forth the effort.

Taunt won’t make tanking more effective, increasing healing power/toughness scaling and introducing an intervention mechanic (the opposite of aggro management, instead of magically grabbing attention you have to actively position yourself to shield others from attacks) is what’s needed to make tanking effective.

You can already position yourself in the line of fire, but that tactic is rarely used.

True, but that’s probably because it’s a dumb thing to do. There’s no mechanic that encourages taking the hit for the squishy behind you, because everyone is responsible for their own defenses.

Taunt won’t make tanking more effective, increasing healing power/toughness scaling and introducing an intervention mechanic (the opposite of aggro management, instead of magically grabbing attention you have to actively position yourself to shield others from attacks) is what’s needed to make tanking viable before we should even talk about effectiveness.

No, I would rather have a dozen items I like than one single item I really like. Variety gives me more flexibility in building the looks of my characters, one overpriced item would cause me to build looks around it to justify the cost.

cant the staff team track the PVPBANK Address or something and IP block the frigging gold sellers for good?

Because it’s trivial to change your IP to any country you want. Block one range and they’ll just hop to another, it’s impossible to deny them access for any meaningful period of time and all you’ll wind up doing is harming legitimate customers who live overseas.

Ya know, I just don’t understand why someone would want to do business or buy something from someone that basically ADVERTISES that they steal/hack accounts.

“Ya, here’s my email address, what could possibly go wrong?”

Greed and stupidity. Never underestimate them.

They’ve returned several times, I recall them once during the end of Season 1, once sometime after that, and a third time right before Halloween. They’ll be back.
