Yes. Yes. Trapper Ranger with torch is fun, but we need an ability to counter stealth escape and initiate mechanisms with other builds, too.

I can escape with a great sword too… And a longbow…. And a shortbow…. And an axe (axe is a bit trickier)

Neat. Not the Ranger’s escape…The Thief and Mesmer stealth escape/initiate we need a way to counter it. I can use all the weapons too, bud. We’re here to talk about how they might implement a skill like Reveal.

since reveal buff is not well accepted by the thief community,

because they point out that:

1. specific counter build is not good, eg revealing stealthed character

2. they also pointed that only 2 classes uses stealth as a mechanic.

then why not give rangers blinding light (aka flashbang to FPS games) so that it can be used generally against all classes,

this is my idea:

blinding light :
900 radius,
4 secs that the whole screen of the player will turn white
60 sec cooldown

NO. Guardians and Thieves do the blinding. I don’t think we need more blinds. WE NEED TO SEE!

1. Stealth specifically counters vision and many other things, so that argument is invalid.
2. Four classes can stealth…not just two. Thieves and Mesmers just have a lot more. I use stealth via Siamoth with my greatsword glass cannon Ranger as a mechanic. So, just because the Thief stealth build is more popular doesn’t make stealth Rangers or Engineers any less special.

Welcome to dodgy pet A.I Mechanics, sir. What gets me the most is pet ai tracking. Did you know birds can’t really fly in GW2? All bird pets are tied to the terrain by an invisible leash. It’s kinda funny when you jump off a 2 ft. ledge and your pet bird has to walk the long way.

Lets just make it perfectly clear. These are just raw ideas. They do not in anyway shape the main ideas for what revealing stealthed enemies should really be. I agree that it becomes a problem when its an elite skill.

Maybe if it was tied to the Pet Mechanic, it would make more sense since canines have the acute sense of smell. Another suggestion perhaps for revealing stealthed enemies. Maybe some sort of passive ability. It can be broadened from there.

What is a Ranger if he can’t even track his own enemies? What kind of hunter class design did Anet have in mind that bares no tracking ability or ‘reveal’?

Poor design is poor. Infact terrible given the current state Rangers are in.

We are the most pigeonholed class in the game. All Rangers are indeed forced to use pets any time they are in combat or take falling damage. That’s a huge mobility and general player happiness setback. Rangers will always be pigeonholed via Bad Updates, Poor Traits/Utilities, Pet AI Mechanics, and that means using a ranged weapon. Idk about you, but I’m tired of seeing “Obstructed” when my arrows are traveling through people. As if the animations and attack speed aren’t strange enough for all bows in every profession to kinda piss me off.

If they add a reveal “mechanic” Thieves need there base health bumped from 10580 to 18580 like warriors/necromancers, they already have little access to healing abilities.

I don’t think one class should have an ability that negates the abilities of another class.

Rangers are a very good class, they have way better traits then thieves do and access to more then one kind of playstyle.

Really? What part of “Withdraw” or “Hide in Shadows” or “Signet of Malice” “Shadow Refuge” not access to healing abilities? We have cond Thieves with Caltrops and Shamans that heal with every attack and go into stealth while the conditions just stack up. Thieves absolutely do not need a base hp increase if stealth reveal was introduced to spvp.

I see the idea of reveal but if that would ruin other classes…. why nit the thought of giving us stealth also, we are supposed to be hunter/rangers, why not be able to sneak up on an enemy before it goes stealth on us.

There’s plenty of opportunity for a Ranger to stealth just look for combo fields left by pistol thieves or l2use Siamoth. Not to mention… also use Hide in Plain Sight and hell why not Runes of Infiltration.

again i feel that within the current meta stealth reveal is un-needed , fairly useless and would only serve to break any builds that are currently barely close to viable.

On the topic of builds, CnD/Steal/Backstab stagnates build variety by which a player enters stealth and downs anyone in a matter of seconds goes back to stealth and finishes. Just that single combo is the reason why professions are forced to bunker because their burst can’t compete.

Furthermore, Reveal would work with EVERYONE not just Thieves. Anyone regardless of profession will be revealed.

Do you really think this ability will be useful against any other classes other than…Thieves? Do you seriously think this ability will be at all useful against a class like say Mesmer? Why would I slot in this ability over, say, RaO when facing a Mesmer?

And that is exactly the point I am trying to make here. A skill that’s only useful for one specific matchup is not a good idea.

Mesmers can stealth themselves and their team easily, Engineers have a chance to stealth, and Rangers have a short gimmicky stealth via Siamoth. So, if a Ranger could reveal all stealthed players to nearby teammates it would be a nice thing to know where the hundred blade warrior and his teammates just went. And yes it would be helpful when say a 3 Thieves are traveling with just about every game thus granting stealth to allies with Smoke/Deception and there’s a sneaky Mesmer in every 10v10, so on top of random Guardians and Rangers getting stealth in fights they can all go back into stealth whenever the Mesmer wants. It doesn’t need to be an Elite, and a lot of people want traps to reveal stealth.

Making the ranger’s defining role as a counter to thief just seems lazy

See here’s the problem. Players get up in arms when we talk about stealth. Well, Stealth Reveal works on everyone and just because Thieves have the most and best stealth abilities in the game doesn’t mean it’s a direct counter to them. I play Thief with zero stealth abilities it’s sort of a trapper hybrid Ranger build. Some Rangers, particularly great sword Rangers are a very good counter to my lazy Thief build because they have stability, but anyone without stability is kinda screwed because I have 3 different utilities that knock you down on a short c/d all which last no less than 3 seconds leaving people in very vulnerable positions on the battlefield is a really fun support build. Just running into a fight and placing traps where a D/D ele is going to ride the lightning and laugh your kittens off when your whole team jumps on him. It reminds me of playing cond. trap Ranger except you have all tons of mobility and no to mention Cluster Bomb >__>.

Only five seconds, but if you used plasma a few times and needed a quick recharge before a fight it will stack. Plus you gain a random boon when using a healing skill. So, if you use Troll Unguent before going into a fight you’ll stack some random boon a bit longer.

Well you know what? Stealth hard counters EVERYTHING! Stealth hard counters vision, targeting, pet ai, all arrow attacks, and it hard counters any chance of survival when downed. Furthermore, if you think “Vines” aka Entangle is a good Elite you should probably not play Ranger. Entangle is hands down the worst ranger elite in the game. It would be just barely viable if it was on a 60 or 45 second cooldown, but right now it’s too kitten easy to get out of. If a Ranger tries to Entangle me I can easily dodge it because of the horrid animation and it lets me know he wasn’t smart enough to use RaO. So, I’ll be happy to knock him around with greatsword.

I’m not arguing that stealth is strong. But you’re missing the point of my post. By giving rangers, and only rangers, the ability to counter this ability, you’re giving rangers an incredibly specialized role (COUNTER THIEVES. And only thieves). And that pretty much flies in the face of Anet’s philosophy.

As for Entangle, I’m sure personally, you’ve dodged every single Entangle that’s been thrown at you. However, if you’re using personal experience, then I’ve hit many many Entangles on other players myself in WvW (I carry RaO in sPvP) by watching people use up dodge or catching people unaware. Of course it doesn’t work on every class (like mesmers can blink out of it) but it’s still an incredibly useful elite if used smartly against the correct matchup.

Yeah, I should have mentioned I’m talking only spvp. Specifically hotjoin. I guess Entangle is great for WvWvW. Makes sense. It’s just too weak for spvp imo. This is a really bad idea, from a balance standpoint. Make one class HARD counter another class’s core mechanic?

This specialization is the very thing Anet wants to avoid. And as a Ranger, I would HATE this to be implemented because everyone would look at me and expect me to be a thief counter, when I can be carrying other (also very useful elites) like Vines and Rez Spirit.

Give it a really long cooldown…or some kind of cool visual effect. Think of a strobe light where instead of just straight up taking everyone out of stealth they blink in and out of stealth for 3 sec

Please correct me if I misunderstand you, but you want to waste an elite slot, for a “reveal” type of skill that

a) has a really long cooldown, by that I guess you mean 4 minutes+ ?

b) lasts for a puny 3 seconds?

Sorry, that’s not correct. The skill, Reveal lasts 20 seconds but reveals every stealth player on the map to you and your nearby allies. By “revealing” it would have the Thief or Mesmer blink rapidly in and out of stealth…not permanently removing their stealth. That way it would still remove targeting, but everyone would know exactly where you are to give us a chance to land a skill shot or other skills when the Thief is going to initiate or escape.

Some tracking ability that has a relation to the Ranger’s lore of nature etc etc. This ‘Reveal’ could also be tied to some sort of Nature Magic skill.

I agree that it must be an elite skill, but the Cooldown must not be anymore than 2 minutes.

I would be happy with a Reveal skill that lasts for 5 seconds and has a cooldown of 60 seconds. That’s completely fair in a PvP situation.

As for the animations. The elite skill would be activated sending a shockwave of visible senses awakening the ranger’s ability to reveal stealthed enemies or reasonable range. Stealthed enemies could be seen as spirited entities, relating to nature magic I suppose. A Ranger’s ‘sixth sense’ if you will.

I like it. So, this would only apply to the Ranger. It’s different than what I was thinking where Reveal would grant vision to everyone next to you, so it would tie into a support role. Like when you’re trying to save someone from being stealth stomped you could possibly save them.

I’d say make it so that traps reveal thieves, but that just push rangers further into a trap/condition only mindset.

I liked the trap build for a while, but I think everyone could probably fit at least one trap in their utility hotbar. We don’t have the best utility and if traps we able to reveal stealth…EVERYONE WOULD BE USING TRAPS. This would be perfect. Now, Thieves start using traps and think of new ways to kill us instead of spamming or doing the 3 second insta-gib macro.

mesmer invisibility isn’t really that bad either…it’s just when they got full clone setup that it’s a pain in the kitten they almost alwayse run back so just run past if possible. their elite skill invisibility isn’t that bad because there could be worse elite skill choices.

giving ranger a reveal on utility (even on a 20-35 second cd) would atleast deny the thief their disengaging ability short of them teleporting away via shortbow, and prevent them from regenerating initiative safely forcing them to run and pay more attention to their initiative.

Clones are another story. I think you really need to be packing an axe to fight a mesmer, but I just can’t use the axe against a thief when my gs is on cooldown. But, yes a good counter to their ability to pick fights and escape so easily. It wouldn’t be a direct attack against all that is holy about Thief. Just a situational skill on a long cool down. And that’s giving up a 20 second stability Elite Skill. So, we would lose a really good steroid.

That Thief shortbow No.5 teleport should be deleted. It’s unacceptable. They already have stealth for survivability. Now they need teleportation as well? Wow Anet. Just wow.

So this is about Rangers having the ability to ‘reveal’ stealthed enemies? I’ve already wasted my words in another useless thread some weeks ago about the same suggestion but people defended against it as a bad decision to give Rangers some sort of tracking ability for stupid reasons.

Mostly because they implicated that it might become too overpowered and misused in the PvP environment. Not to mention thiefs aren’t the only profession that have the ability to stealth. I do believe mesmers have something similar.

Imagine the QQ threads placed upon Rangers when we actually have a tracking skill that reveals stealthed enemies in an instant. They would be calling for nerfs 24/7.

I really just don’t understand why Anet designed a hunter style profession that has no ability to track stealthed enemies AT ALL. What could possibly have been in their minds? I mean, isn’t this class called a Ranger? Seriously.

Please, think of a good thing Reveal would bring to everyone who gets to play. How could this ability be fun for the Thieves as well? It’s a very touchy subject, so let’s jut try and talk about Reveal and all that would be great about it.

Lightning Reflexes

Yeah, I dropped lighting reflexes a long time ago. Might as well Quickening Zephyr and take no damage for six seconds. It’s a cool little skill, but it doesn’t perform nearly as well as withdraw (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Withdraw). When I used withdraw I had no doubt I would get out of whatever bad situation it was.

once the Ranger activates the ability to reveal stealthed enemies, the enemies immediately lose their stealth and everyone within range can see them. Not just the Ranger himself. Because lets face it, once you reveal a stealthed enemy, he/she is visibly exposed out in the open where anyone can clearly spot them.

So that could be a tradeoff for having one profession that has the ability to reveal stealthed enemies.

This would make Rangers more wanted in PvP as they alone have the ability to counter stealth for a short period of time. That small window is crucial for an offensive strike in any PvP scenario.

Reveal should be a ground targeted large circle drop that takes the thief or Mesmer out of stealth and drops the reveal debuff on them just as if they attacked from stealth.

AND

Give pets a detect hidden ability non clickable that they randomly perform that does the exact same thing just like the pets current aoes. Prolly give this to wolves or cats.

i just don’t like the idea on an elite… Let thief traps and ranger traps prevent stealth/disable stealth skills for 2 seconds upon activation. the hard counter is just not to run into them, while still giving very situation based awareness.

this gives both thieves and and rangers more anti-thief, and increases build variability for both. if thieves want to counter thieves easier then they use a trap.

by doing this you’re not pigeon holding class meta and actually increases the efficiency of a trapper-style ranger, and the introduction of a new skill isn’t needed, as most rangers can generally fit room for a trap utility. it doesn’t force people out of invisibility unless the individual is stupid enough to activate the trap instead of run around it.

if the thief or mesmer is smart they’re just gonna teleport away anyway, wait for the 2 seconds to end and then come back to fight.

I’m thinking the “guard” skill that plops your pet into a defensive position should also give your pet the ability to detect/remove stealth. That’s where you can get the “sniffed out” flavor for our pets as well as provide some sort of way to handle stealth.

Any way we could possibly get a skill that negates stealth and makes it unusable for up to 15 seconds at a range of 300 units with a 25 second cooldown? It would also instantly knock anybody in stealth out of it if they enter that AoE. I believe it would help with our usefulness in PvP, and would serve as a slight nerf to thieves and anybody who uses stealth (in case you weren’t planning on nerfing the stealth for thieves, which is in dire need of it).

Aoe skills. Warrior F1 with Longbow can melt Thieves and it’s spammable. Spamming autoattacks while running around in circles works, too. Spam dodge before they Steal, use a swiftness ability, and block.

Use the Staff? The most overpowered Aoe AA in the game? You can hit people through walls, proc burning, and fight any ranged class. Your 2 heals you or can be used as an extremely long ranged skill on a short cd.

I think that all “balance suggestions” made by players are terrible. Most players aren’t game designers, and don’t know the first thing about properly balancing a class.

As for your suggestions, they would make the ranger abhorrently overpowered. This is usually what happens when people try to offer suggestions on how to fix or balance their favorite class.

Edit: I see you only mentioned bringing bow damage up to par with warrior weapon damage. This would completely invalidate the ranger’s other weapons.

Do you think CnD/Steal/Backstab while remaining 100% invisible was a balanced decision? Rangers need their raw damage output buffed and their pets nerfed down to being the ornaments they are. I’m talking like all pet basic attacks would hit for 75, so basically pets would be a condition damage it would be so minimal. On the otherhand, Ranger’s will hit like the trucks they truly should be at a distance. Now, Thieves and other stealthy units actually need to use their stealth to get in range rather than prancing through our AA and Barrage.

After watching more and more videos on youtube and videos I’ve recorded, something really stands out, ranged weapons get Evaded/Obstructed and melee weapons get Evaded/Missed, I never seen ranged attack get the “Miss” once, only “Evaded/Obstructed” and by only seeing Obstructed we think its a bug naturely when its really just a miss.

I took good look at Xsorus.2507, video over and over again the projectile missed its target and then says Obstructed, makes me think maybe Anet has designed ranged to say Obstructed over Miss.

Take look at melee on youtube not once so far have I see them Obstructed but I have seem them miss there target.

We “Kite” melee so they miss, so why can’t they kite our projectiles and the term used is Obstructed, projectiles are not heat seeking missiles so there not going to suddenly change direction.

Show me how to kite an invisible/cloned enemy. How do you kite melee classes with huge gap closers and teleports. Plus, try kiting a shortbow thief. See how far that gets you. He’s going to deal +50% more damage to you because of your pet via trickshot. Warriors are master with the bow/rifle as well.

It would be really good if the item was placed in your hand. My understanding is the number of items (duration of items) has been adjusted downwards since release so you can effectively only have two briefly anyways.

As such it’s not really an effective group buff option and closing the loop to make it more effective for the ranger makes alot of sense.

So, technically..you could give your entire team a really good buff. However, it doesn’t compare to instant cast group buffs of a guardian or mesmer.

I tested this pre patch adn while I had read posts of creating mass group buffs. I was able (by switching pets) to only have two active at any one moment with the sfirst fading @ 15-20 seconds after getting the second).

This was in tpvp in node defense mode seeing how many pre fight buffs I could get and maintain in place waiting to be assaulted. Clearly the ability to stack and reserve multiple powerful buffs would have been a nice advantage. it didn’t exist with the pigs I was interested in.

Perhaps in PvE it acts differently I’ll have to test that. I just assumed recognizing the inherent power of stacking 3-5 utility power level buffs for at will use would be that the skill had been appropriately adjusted to prevent that.

Idk if we are using the same method. I’m talking about swapping pets through the “Pet Management” window rather than swapping between two separate pigs. Basically, you set one pig for the first slot and a dog or other unrelated species in the second slot. Then, you use the F2 ability of the pig. Now, rather than switching pets go to the window and replace your first pig with another pig. Press f2. Replace that one back to your first pig and notice the F2 skill cooldown has been refreshed.

Since when? Because unless they changed this last month you’re talking out of your kitten me and a friend tested thi and enemies COULD NOT pick up the item, allies on the other hand could an I can not tell you how many times some dumb pug in sPvP wasted a skull fear when no one was around…

I personally would like to see the F2 to stay as is, BUT it chain into a “toss” skill where activating it has your pig charge over to the item either knocking enemies down or just dealing damage along the way (kinda like flesh golem) and then throwing the item to the ranger IE makin it the rangers hot bar, they clearly having this sort of tech in, seeing as how it’s used in Keg Brawl, so it’s not out of question.

How about when you cast F2 it places the skull or whatever in the F2 slot and drops another skull/whatever near the Ranger, so others can still use it. This would be like the Ele’s conjure weapon ability. And it forces your pet to use it’s 5th or last skill on the “next stunned/disabled/immobile” foe.

It would be really good if the item was placed in your hand. My understanding is the number of items (duration of items) has been adjusted downwards since release so you can effectively only have two briefly anyways.

As such it’s not really an effective group buff option and closing the loop to make it more effective for the ranger makes alot of sense.

Yes it does. Actually, you can create a surplus of skulls, feathers, or whatever out of combat by using the pet management window to switch between pigs. Eh, to me I think the biggest problem with pigs is that they have a huge wind up before their charge ability which means that they often do some elaborate charge into nothing which effectively takes them out of the fight doing nothing productive for a long time when they could just be auto-attacking instead.

This is the same for ALL pets. Jaguars will charge enemies at full speed. Stop. Then, start casting (I believe it’s a second or two cast time on all abilities). I’ve played every build from cond trapper, beastmaster, and beserker. Yes, our pets can be very powerful but they aren’t responsive, and don’t function like skills should. Which is why I’ve been using the forage abilities because they give us the power to use a skill. It’s much better to have all boons for five seconds via “plasma” than to wait for a stupid NPC to attack imo. I think asking Anet to completely reconstruct the AI is too much. They’ve already managed to make our pets a curse and nightmare to use in spvp. For example, if I was to fight a Thief with a shortbow he’s already going to do +50% more damage because of my pet. Why? “Trickshot”. All of his shots will hit me twice until my pet is dead. There is no way to counter this unless your pet is already out of service. Rangers have no freedom of choice when it comes to pet functionality and that’s a downright slap in the face.

I think we should have even more buffs when we dodge depending on what pet we are using. Dodging with bears removes condition, panther grants stealth, and pigs grant stability. Of course this would be a trait that would replace some one of the many garbage traits we have like Sharpening Stone at 75% hp or w/e.

Yeah, dps is great on target golems. Super. Now, when your fighting a mesmer/thief and need to constantly press TAB and F1 to get your pet to attack them after they leave stealth or use clones. Plus, you need to use all your other spells and utility. Your pet also attracts aggro from Necro pets and Thieves guild. Yup, you’re almost guaranteed to pull all aggro from every npc in spvp because you have a pet. A pet that lowers your own dps and dies quickly.

O.k, so anyone who uses the porcine skills like: skull, feathers, and plasma knows it’s basically like having a thief steal minus the damage, range, and other perks that come with Steal. You’re also aware of the major drawbacks the F2 skill has. So, if you feel passionately enough about the abilities and want them to be viable for spvp let your voices be heard. I’ve created a thread in “Suggestions”, so please share your ideas related to all porcine F2 abilities. And give feedback if possible. I believe, if our Porcine F2 skill functioned smoothly like an Engineer F2/elixir or even better like an attunement swap by instantly granting stealth or automatically placing the foraged item in our hotbar life as a porcine ranger will be a lot better.

I’ve been using the Forage ability after I knock someone back in pvp, but I have to use the F key to pick it up. Well, the F key is also used for finishing people and my player experience is being quashed because of the use key. So, I propose that the F2 skill is changed to grant the Ranger one of three abilities automatically like any other profession has. For instance, the Engineer has like 4 or 5 F skills that only require a ground targeting gimmick, so you you change it to that and I’ll be happy. It’s just the fact that our best utility skills are trapped inside NPCs that require you to stand still and channel three times. That’s not exactly fair considering thieves and mesmers can take full advantage of their cornucopia of stealth abilities on the move. So, please enhance all Porcine F2 skills. It’s extremely annoying when you cannot fully use your kit because your standing next to downed players. I’m also suggesting that you remove Plasma and grant the Siamoth strictly one stealth ability while buffing the stealth timer by a few seconds.

They could delete every pet except the jaguar and I’d be happy. I love the skills that pigs give you, but it’s just too tedious to seriously use. Just thinking about how many mystical animals there are in pve, and how NONE of them are available to use in pvp or tame for that matter is a disgrace to the game. The sword is good for evading attacks and crippling targets low on hp to help your pet land attacks. I can get about 1k crits with it and turning of auto spell one helps, but you have to spam it anyways if your dealing with a thief. You can actually stick to them while they are in stealth if you are good at predicting movement and know the animations.

I’ve suggested they give the Ranger a new Elite skill. In team fights and cqc melee zerg fests your best option is to either support your team with healing spring and try and tank some damage or go full glass cannon and hope you can burst someone down b4 they get you. I think if they gave the Ranger the Norn Elite Skill to shapeshift it would add some viability to the class. The skill would grant a large hp pool (40k)like any other shapeshifting skills and enlarge your pet(s). Furthermore, it would be on a low c/d like 60-90 seconds. Thus, throwing the Ranger into the bunker category since burst can’t compete with other classes.

I always laugh my kitten off when a glass cannon Warrior H/B my tanky Warrior. Usually my Retaliation and spiked armor proc at the same time, so they just insta gib themselves and I stand back up and stomp them. I’ve been able to take two simultaneous hundred blades and survive. When my team figures out I can tank, they usually clean up the mess after the enemy wastes their burst on me.

Rank 26 here, but I know exactly how the Forge works and I’m used to not getting the exact item I want every time. However, items like slivers are extremely rare and I recently used one to create an “Alpine Hammer”. Alpine items almost always return arcane orbs when salvaged. So, why does it require one of the rarest salvage materials "sliver’’ to create? To add more comedic value to PVP rewards…I also got my daily kill/capture rewards which gave me a tournament token, booster, and 2 copper. Really? 2 copper? So, after the hour or so of playing pvp is equal to killing one skelk in pve? Maybe it’s just a joke?

Furthermore, I’ve leveled at least 6 times without seeing a single “Free Tournament Ticket” which is another great salvage item for getting cool looking gear. Yet, it’s far too elusive. So, please consider upping the chances of getting slivers, free tournament tickets, and increase daily kill/capture currency reward because getting 2 copper is disappointing.

Easy Pet Mechanic Solution for Ranger

Many people don’t realize that some of the more powerful utility comes from boar, hog, and black pigs F2. But, Rangers have to remain immobile and hope to god the skull, bone, or rock actually surfaces. Then, we need to pick it up and channel the spell. It’s clunky and a direct slap to the face with mobility being a big deal. So, just cut out the Pig and boar all together via completely revamped Trait Tree and give us the option to make F2 give us a random ability or weapon instantly added to our hotbar…like a smooth transition with the Flamethrower on Eng. Plus, give us the option to stow pets permanently with a percentage increase to all stats.

I look at pets as “Turn based NPCs That Bog Down Players.” It’s really not fun to have a major chunk of damage taken away from you because you have an npc that slows you down, gives position away, dies quickly, and often struggles to land basic attack with all the evasive skills, stealth, teleports…I gave Ranger a good run, but once the traps were reduced to nothing…I lost hope. That was the only build I liked S+Torch/Axe.
