There have to be a big percentage-chunk of the playerbase that is dying for difficult and good content with a good risk/reward factor.

Can’t really enjoy Dungeons all that much anymore. Done them so many times, and they’re not challenging which makes them fairly unexciting imho…

The most enjoyment I get from dungeons is running AC (i.e.) with guildies when we’re all about level 40. Usually some of them that’s fairly new to the game, so you really have to think things through (since a level 80 scaled down is actually much stronger than someone of the minimum req. level).

The reason why the PvP updates are rather far between is because it takes time to balance things and time for the new changes to settle with the player and the community….

However, a bigger PvP team would be great… Ridiculous that we only have ONE game mode a year after release! Which is awful for me since I do not care enough for a game mode that is so heavily build around positioning your team around a map, rather than actually prove your PvP skills and kill people, fair and square. (And a fairly unrewarding reward-system, but I guess that’s quite subjective)

As someone that played PvP in WoW since vanilla to Cata, I would like to think that the absence of healer is great for PvP!

In example, what was the most fun 2v2s? If you say 1 Dps and 1 Healer, I’ll start to wonder what’s wrong with you…
The most enjoyable fights was in general 2 vs 2 Damage-dealers.

If they where to add another weapons, though, it most likely wouldn’t fit most professions. Hence, they’d have to make some of the current weapons available for more professions (Eng with hammer, Theif with maces, Ele with Torch… )

The 2v2 tournament the other day proved just how well gw2 combat mechanics go with small scale deathmatch. Even the controversial res system provided so many clutch plays and the commentators and spectators were able to notice all of it. Unlike in 5v5 where unfortunately the commentators really have no idea whats happening in the combat among the aoe particle effects and petting zoos, as well as missing half the fights because the camera is focused on somewhere else to begin with.

Kinda wished that the streamer kept spectating just one player, or at least rarely switched players to spectate; I found it much more difficult to follow what was going on when he did that…

A trait like Diamond Skin is poorly designed… A cooler trait idea might be an Earth GM trait that reads

Immune to burning while attuned to fire
Immune to blind while attuned to air
Immune to chill while attuned to water
Immune to bleed while attuned to earth

This would promote active play: say you’re been chased by a shortbow 1 spamming spirit ranger? switch to earth and negate a huge chunk of his damage. It also would promote active play by opponents and it would be definitely worthy of a GM trait

On demand perma immunity to something is always bad…always…

Maybe it could just remove the condition upon attunement?
Besides, we have to consider that the Attunements have a fairly high CD even after the patch. Choosing to utilize this Trait while in combat would mean that you very well might be in a less effective attunement and may very well put an additional attunement on CD in order to clear off a Condition.

I have a better idea… if you don’t click the ready button by the time the initial timer ends(before the 10 sec countdown) you are kicked and someone else is chosen(or accepts first).

Aside of the 2v2 & 3v3 deathmatch Arena-style ideas, wouldn’t these small team-sizes in general bring big benefits?
You can easily just hook up with a friend and thus have “full control of the team”, right? The 2 or 3 of you against the others.

Wouldn’t it feel a lot less Zergy and a lot more like you’re in direct control of the match?

I though that everyone would be absolutely thrilled to get a +33% boost on the Initiative-reg.

Apparently, the attitude on this Thief forum is little else but pessimistic and vile.

Sure they “nerfed” Initiative-gain from Traits, but that’s fairly well balanced out by the initial initiative regeneration increase!

And the Vigor nerf was seen by other Professions, but now we’ve it easier to use evades from out Weapon skills!

I wish I had a dollar for every time I went to /roar or /flex, then realized that these aren’t available in this game.

If ANet put the option for additional emotes in the gem store, they’d get some extra cash from me.

As an ele-only player, I’m not happy with the changes announced. I like that you guys are trying to remove dependancy on arcana traits but I also believe you’re going the wrong way. Evasive arcana is by far the best trait any ele can take for spvp and it’s still there, as a grandmaster trait. So, not going 30 in arcana would mean losing a LOT for the player even if the passive arcana bonuses get shaved. To sum it all up, I like the way you guys were thinking but I believe this will not realise what you intended. It will only destroy D/D completely, it will mostly leave S/D fresh air untouched, it will destroy S/D valks (cuz of the water traits) and it will introduce a clingy condi/bunkerish ele which will most probably suck kitten . The dependancy on arcana will remain, 2 builds will be gone and maybe 1 will be introduced.

Think you’re exaggerating. Evasive Arcana is indeed amazing, but it does not mean that every build would benefit from taking it. I think they did it the right way, but I would love to see some more interesting GM traits elsewhere.

The good news is that players can create psuedo-2v2/3v3 Custom Arenas already, and there’s already a few rooms setup like that. I’d like to see more 2v2 type tournaments with prizes pop up in the future, and I’ve had a few people approach me saying they’d be interesting in organizing something like that.

Well it’s possible for players to create their own 2v2/3v3 tournaments, that’s true, but you can’t have proper (i.e. randomized) matchmaking with a custom arena.

I don’t think that’s all true, I just think that they’re really, really careful about what game modes to add and the quality of them. This could absolutely be a thing if they manages to figure out how to fit it in sPvP =)

I’m all for this, I won’t be up there in the top 200, but I’d play these game modes religiously. I have friends waiting for 2v2 and 3v3 to release before they come back to play and I’m sure it will garner a load of attention since it is more smaller scaled, and easier to organise teams for.

Just so long as you cannot use instant rez’s it should be okay. Or give the option to every profession.

It feels like something that a lot of people would enjoy a lot!

About “instant rez’s”… The idea is that once you die, you’re dead, which would probably encourage a ton of team-support. Unless you mean like “Toss Elixir R” which I find like an exciting utility here!

I think 5 is the biggest team size we’d want for organized play, and we could try smaller teams, but due to multiple reasons, teams greater than 5 would probably be too large for GW2.

What is your opinion on a 2v2, 3v3 (etc.) Arena-style game mode? The combat-design in GW2 seems perfect for this, and some fair dueling is basically all that I personally miss from sPvP (without having the opponent either flee or have one side outnumbered)

(Two small teams fights to the death on a fairly small arena, about a few times bigger than the Graveyard node on LotF, possibly with a few obstacles or maybe some platforms or a bridge.)

The reason why Game Modes is such an immensely important topic for me was because, however great Conquest is as a Game Mode, I always feel like there isn’t room for legitimate PvP fighting; The actual fighting often ends in either some side outnumbering the other, or someone flees, hence ending the fight.

… And of course, having just one Game Mode made PvP feel dull, “shallow” and like a mini-game for me.

I haven’t played GW2 for months since I’m just waiting for more Game Modes. Ultimately, I would love something that embraces the element of actually besting your opponent by simply fighting them, fair and square. 2v2 & 3v3 (etc.) Arenas have been suggested and discussed a lot – That fits in the description, among others.

People have always been very (extremely) vocal about GvG (nostalgic, maybe?) Haven’t played the preceded game, but in the future, there should absolutely be some emphasis on guilds in PvP. Maybe objective-based 20v20(+)?

Guild vs Guild
The core objective of the game mode is to kill the opposition’s NPC Guild Lord before the opposition does the same to your Guild Lord. There could be various objectives similar to capture points such as the trebuchet, cannons, capture points, and orb of ascension. Players who are killed would be revived after 1 minute of death time in their home base (or however much time seems right). After a certain amount of time, the Guild Lords and Remaining NPCs will rush to the center to fight to the death.
Trebuchet
Just like in the Battle of Kyhlo, each team has access to a trebuchet which can bombard any enemy or area on the battlefield. It causes massive damage to enemy players and causes knockback to players who get caught in the area of effect. It does no friendly-fire damage or knockback. It is able to be destroyed and repaired. With both teams’ repair kit spawning in the center of the map.
Cannons
Cannons are mounted on top of each team’s base walls. These can not be destroyed; however, players must jump down and grab cannonballs to load their cannons to fire. Their range is not very far and are really only used for defense.
Capture Points
Similar to the WvW Capture Points, these would be used to Provide a Blood Lust Damage Bonus. For Each point held, the team would gain 15% More Damage. A Team holding all three points would do 50% more damage, a very nice reward for the ability to hold all the points. This affects NPCs as well.
Orb of Ascension
The Orb of Ascension which spawns in each teams base after a set amount of time, is able to instantly neutralize and stun all enemies within, or near a capture point for like 5 seconds with or without stability (dayuuum). Players may only hold the orb for a certain amount of time.
Bases
The base layout could be similar to that of Legacy of the Foefire. The cannons could sit atop the base at both gate entrances; the walls would have much more structural integrity though. Outside each gate would be 3-4 NPCs (like 2 Casters and 2 Soldiers). Within the base would be 5 More NPCs, the Guild Lord and his Body Guards.
Winning Conditions
Whichever team kills the other Guild Lord first wins. No if’s and’s or but’s.
I’ll attach a kittenty picture of what the map could look like. The purple dots are NPCs.
How to Play
Rated Automatic Match
Automatically pairs your team with another waiting team which fits your ranking best. The result of the ladder match will adjust your guild rating.
New Unrated Challenge
Allows you to request a battle against a specific guild. The result of the match will not adjust your guild rating.
New Scrimmage
This is pretty much like custom arenas. ’Cept for GvG.

I’m so glad we’re not the only ones to feel this way. I also keep quitting and coming back hoping something has changed, I stick around for a few weeks and get bored. Leave, come back in a few months and do it all over again. As someone said earlier in the thread, the PvP is too shallow. It really is, 1 game type? Come on…

It’s been a year, please give us more… I hate leaving, coming back, leaving, coming back… it cuts into my soul doing this only because of stale PvP. I was hooked at the start of this game because of the whole PvP centred advertising and such, but it’s not delivering…

Jonathon Sharp must think, these guys just don’t get it. We say we’re doing this and trying that, but what he doesn’t seem to understand is what is fun. Fun is more game types, fun is more players coming because of these game types. Fun is casually face rolling your keyboard against other face rollers. Cater to the professionals after your casuals are numerous and interested, it’s better for the game imo. The illusions of grandeur because of E-Sports isn’t working. There is no base of viewers because there are dwindling casuals!

2v2 3v3, deathmatch, these are fun. Don’t include them in your E-Sports plan, keep your crummy node defending for it if you’d like, but please let us have some fun with new game types.. !!

Also, as many of us have said, we want to give players enough variety such that they can change what they play from time to time, while also being sure that we don’t fracture the player-base by spreading players out to too many different game types.

Honestly, this is such a very, VERY harmful train of thought!!!!

If you have more modes, you will bring MORE PLAYERS in, and that won’t be an issue.

More game modes will bring a ton of players to sPvP.

This reminds me… While waiting for you to add another game mode, I searched on various forums for other MMOs with good PvP. Didn’t really find much, but whenever GW2 was brought up, a surprising amount of people said something along the lines of “only one game mode…. too shallow”

… If you want to find solo fights , just hop around the different boarderlands and take out the sentry points and camps. If you do this, it’s almost impossible to not find a fight.

I’ll give that a good try then!

I’ve tried out Dueling-arenas in sPvP before. Although it was a blast and it gave me a good amount of faith of how good the combat system actually is, I got tired of it after a while.

The thread title say’s it all. Please calm the kitten down! Thread after thread, post after post of complaints.

We all should have been painfully aware that GW2 players are a bit overzealous to put it nicely. We then should have surmised that WvW was going to be flooded with players, to the point of being overloaded, this first week. This first week is going to be a complete wash for the PPT. As it doesn’t reflect the full time WvW player’s and guilds at all. So relax…..

The first thing I did after playing my usual reset schedule, was to begin writing out a priority list on how we (as a server) can help our players get these achievements. Thus, don’t try and force PvE’ers out of WvW, embrace it. Be creative, work with it, and relax.

Considering the situation, I believe the smartest course of action is to simply Choo-Choo all week long

Guess it’s the same thing as in every forum: Vocal and volatile minority is the loudest.

Feel a bit bad for the Devs. that have to read through it all to find useful info….

I was able to have some fun with a friend or two, so small group roaming is still possible. But my solo experience so far is that on the two times since Friday that I did find someone alone, the fight had barely started before we got interrupted by several more enemies (or friendlies, in one case) pouring in. Blech.

This is one of the reasons why I don’t enjoy Conquest all that much in sPvP….

On a more positive note, what I do when I can’t find any good fights solo is play defense in our borderlands and keep an eye to the map, looking for sentries that go down before camps are hit. Sometimes the group doing camps is too large, but sometimes its just one (or two or three, if I’m built to handle that), and you get a good fight out of that. When you’re having trouble finding other roamers out and about, anticipating their movements helps to track them down.

This is an MMORPG, and people expect and want to be presented with rewards that they can work towards, and enjoy the way that leads to that reward (playing sPvP in this example).
What people mean when they ask for rewards or a better reward-system in sPvP is probably just that they want the current rewards in sPvP to be more desirable.

Personally, I don’t care much for the rewards. I’m completely incurious about acquiring Glory, and the items (that’s supposed to be the rewards) just feels random and apart from my PvP-deeds and victories. This is a big reason why I don’t enjoy sPvP all that much.

It’s not that… Just because this is an MMORPG, people feel that they needs to be rewarded with progression to their IG-Character, it’s also that GW2 has embraced this idea and executes it poorly in sPvP.

Result is:
Players want to want the rewards and want to feel like the aspiration towards the rewards greatly enhances their journey (playing sPvP) towards the rewards.

I want to enjoy some small-scale duels/fights while playing solo.

I don’t enjoy Conquest all that much as the single Game Mode in sPvP.

I’ve tried running around alone in WvW, capping some Bloodlust-nodes etc. while trying to find enemies to kill, but I just end up running for long periods of time without encountering what I’m looking for all that often.

Any tips how to find some good duels while playing alone?

I think when you boost your two strongest classes, Warrior and Necro, and don’t do much for the others, even apply nerfs, you haven’t helped the game at all.

You haven’t even demonstrated an understanding of what is happening in pvp or tried to fix what people don’t like about it.

-petting zoos
-stun chains
-poor itemisation
-pigeon holed classes
-classes not being played in tournamnets

Oh well. I won’t be the one out of work at Xmas.

A Balance Patch shoudln’t be given to PvP by grace of ANet.
Balance Patches are just a way of keeping things…yeah…into balance.
It will probably stop players from quitting due to frustration about OP classes / builds.

But it wont stop players from quitting due to missing PvP content.

Pretty much this. I don’t know what the OP expected from a Balance Patch, really. It slicks up the combat a >bit< and make things a >bit< more equal.

We need some kitten content.

This is what gives Conquest depth instead of it being linear like you are trying to make Conquest sound like.

Does depth ruin games in general? I don’t think so.

It’s not what it’s about, is it? It’s about that some people would love another Game Mode besides Conquest. Even though it’s well designed, it doesn’t cater to what every PvP player wants. Frankly, it seems like this is true for a rather large part of the playerbase.

The irony is that a lot of forums posters want things fast which usually leads to it being half-baked, the problem is that if they do give in and quickly assemble something, all those same players will spend the next few months kittening about it. So it is a catch 22 for arenanet.

Oh, they definitely should take their time. What I would like is to have the knowledge that they’re working on this kind of Game Mode. Then it’s fine! People should’ve learned by now that these kinds of things takes a lot of time.

There is a reason to fight a battle that involved capping points, it is so that your score reaches to 500 faster if you get it. If …….

That’s the point.
You are not engaging to kill your opponent, neither for the sake of fighting.
You’re just engaging to keep the node white as much as possible, otherwise you’re wasting time……

The core nature of Conquest isn’t appealing to everyone. I’m glad they’re working on other Game Modes, because this should certainly not be the only option, even if it has a good design.

PS: S/P thief + condi necro beats anything and happy to prove it

Conquest is a fine game mode. Problem is it’s the only game mode. So no I don’t get addictive, because doing the same thing after +4k games gets old.

I love this game. It’s combat mechanics, philosophies, etc.
When the Manifest-Trailer was released, I stopped PvP:ing in World of Warcraft (wasn’t enjoyable when in awe of GW2) and just awaited it’s release while being on forums.

But once I got into sPvP, and Conquest, I didn’t feel like the game “sucked me in” and I still don’t care much for the PvP, even though I love PvP in MMOs. Now, this was something that Battlegrounds (Conq., CTF and so on) in WoW did great. I didn’t care about the gear-progression, but the Battlegrounds where lots of fun!

My question is: Do you feel that a match in sPvP “sucks you in” and is, in a way addictive in the sense that after you’ve completed the match, you feel a strong urge to play again?
