Yet another complicated password...

Not that kind of unique password.

Where did you even get the idea that individual players are forbidden from using the same password as other players? That’s completely absurd and it’s not what either article says. They’re talking about ‘requiring’ (and for obvious reasons, they do little more than ask politely) players not to use passwords for GW2 that they already use elsewhere.

You are not allowed to use passwords that would result in you having log-in credentials that match what ANet have seen tried by a hacker. That is all. And no, it’s not a measure that would be useless with password hashing and salting in place. Where do you get that idea from?

Have you seriously not tried making an account… It says all of that when you try to make an account.

Guild wars 2 moving towards the holy trinity?

I don’t hate the idea of the trinity. More mechanics in a dungeon is a good thing. Doesn’t have to be the trinity, but making everything zerk zerk zerk is kinda boring.

When have they said they are not salting? I have seen no evidence that they do not. You do seem to keep claiming it as a fact though, so the burden of proof lies with you.

Lol you so funny with your logical fallacies. (For the record I never stated it as fact, simply a theory based on logic)

If they are doing password salting correctly, the password hashes for each user would be different, regardless of what password they actually use. This means they would have no way of determining if one person’s password is the same as another’s, since they would hash different every time.

Since they tell the user that their password has been used before by a different account, two possibilities exist: either they are not doing password salting at all, or they are doing it, and storing the passwords in some less secure form (like unsalted, or in plain text). Clearly not secure either.

Unique passwords solve this problem
http://xkcd.com/792/

It does not solve this one
http://xkcd.com/1286/
Since I can basically just ask the system, ‘is someone using this password’ and it’ll tell me yes or no. I can then just randomly plug that password to my hearts content.

Salting would make it impossible to cross reference passwords making it pointless to require a unique password, and impossible for people to compare the hash and cross reference it with other sites. I’d have to go in and manually enter the password, which I can do, but it makes my day a lot harder. Basically it’s never a good idea to say “someone else is using this password” which is what they’re doing.

For the record, I could be 100% wrong. I want to be wrong. Hey admins come tell me I’m wrong and that you’re salting!

When have they said they’re salting? Legitimate question, have seen no evidence and would really like to believe it for personal piece of mind. I see almost no reason to require a unique password other than they’re not salting.

Photonman.6241

That’s freaking hilarious. They’re still not salting their passwords, they require a unique password for each user. Which still means that i can get someone’s password from just failing to make an account. But it is kinda funny that they’re actually making a blacklist.

Photonman.6241

Yea… pretty sure this means they’re not salting the passwords, which is bad for security. I doubt that they have some master black list of compromised passwords.

https://crackstation.net/hashing-security.htm

I’m not 100% this is the case… but it probably is. If this is the case, IT IS BAD. By saying you require a unique password, they’re saying someone else has that password. Makes it a lot easier for a potential hacker to just search for that password and gain entry. They might have some security idk about, maybe even some master blacklist. But unsalted passwords are definitely a bad thing.

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/473/feature/9418/Guild-Wars-2-An-Exclusive-Preview-of-the-Revenants-Skills.html

Revenants flipping madly between legends is specifically what they want and they don’t want traits which discourage that.

This makes it seem like energy isn’t going to be that great a resource and maintaining the energy is going to be trickier than swapping to the other legend for more of it.

I like this idea. Make it some kind of little mechanic for some events or part of a heart quest. Why not? It wouldn’t be required so all the haters could just keep rolling. I’d love for organic games of keg brawl or crab toss (I think it was crab toss) that just crop up in the open world. Also dueling needs to be a feature, having to go to an empty arena is silly.

Brain blast: Give us an item like “Brawling Keg: Allows you to set up a small area for keg brawl” or something like that.

Photonman.6241

I find the spec kinda troubling. I love the idea and want it so bad. But people seem to be getting strange impressions about it. I was thinking it’d be the same as in every other mmo with multiple specs to choose from, with semi-permanent consequences. But now they’re saying that not only can we change between them super easily like we change our traits, but people seem to be under the impression that it’s one per class, which doesn’t make much sense to me. All of this really seems like specs aren’t going to be a big deal, which totally sucks since that’s what i was looking forward to the most.

I get why vents and stuff won’t be available everywhere, but the glider itself could. I jump off of stuff right now that kills me every time. Just having a little parachute to gently float down doesn’t seem that game breaking, and they’ve already done the work. It’s my understanding that it’s not gonna be a mini game type thing but just something where you jump off of something and glide. Could be wrong, and will be seriously disappointed if I am.

All the skins are in wardrobe. Nothing’s really destroyed since skins have kinda moved to a very mutable place atm. PS is tied to race and won’t change, and I can still play it on my 80. I’ve already been through these god kitten zones so many times that I don’t care. Besides, I always ‘learn’ a character in pvp way before I level the sucker. Normally at level 2 actually. How else would I know if I’m gonna like it? You don’t get all your skills til 30+

The guildwars model has to have micro-transactions since it has no sub. Something has to keep the servers running. I think people might have gotten bogged down by the transmute thing, but ultimately the cash shop isn’t that big a deal. It’s mostly vanity stuff, which is going to be in every game, and some silly convenience stuff associated with crafting. I think they might also sell xp boosts. It’s not pay to win or even necessary. It’s just fun stuff so that the company can make some money.

[Suggestion] Free Char slot with xpac

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Photonman.6241

Photonman.6241

WoW did this for MoP, don’t mean to harp on WoW too much, but it was awesome since if you’ve been playing forever your character slots are probably full. Not normally such a big deal since you can just buy character slots and you have to weigh which classes you want to make and what not. But now that they’re adding content, I feel like that weighing situation has shifted drastically. Now people have to choose to either drop extra cash on top of the cost of xpac for a character slot or delete one of the toons that they’ve invested time and effort into. Just an idea…

Skimpy heavy armors (at least what fantasy games call ‘heavy’ or armors for ‘warrior’ professions) did exist in real world (pit fighter karma armor is very close to roman/gladiator, gladiator is more akin to tribal warrior armor and barbaric is a blending of roman/gladiator and tribal), so again reality is probably their excuse for armor designs for the professions. So I wouldn’t call those a more accurate comparison, I’ve seen chain mail pants in other games that looked good (which should be the first priority designing armor for pixels).

Yea… gladiators were slaves put in a pit to fight to the death. Armor got in the way of that, so they didn’t give them much of it. Roman and Greek soldiers did wear skirts though, just with heavy chest plates.

Some people go through situations that are impossible to understand until lived through. I can’t imagine being in chronic pain, partially because I turn into a blubbering, life-hating wuss if I’m so much as sick for too long. >_>
So if someone wants to use (saying “need” labels as addiction and isn’t quite the case) a game for their distraction until they feel well enough to engage elsewhere, I can’t fault that. And seeing so many others come out and highlight how things are a little easier for them in the meantime, that speaks volumes.

I’m not really sure what you’re talking about… I tried to word it so that I wasn’t belittling the OP in any way. Her story was amazing an I’m totally happy for her for finding an outlet. I was simply referring to the healthy people that adopt a video game as an alternative to a life style simply because it’s easier.

And to all the people that say that a “healthy person couldn’t possibly understand the things these people have to face.” I’ve lost 3 people close to me to cancer over the past 7 years. Uterine, colon, and lung cancer. My Grandfather died 7 years ago from colon cancer. He lived his last year or so in hospice and was kept relatively comfortable. My aunt, who introduced me to online gaming in the heyday of WoW and was one of the most influential people in my life, died of uterine cancer 5 years ago. My family was poor and she had to stay with her mother, my grandmother, with the family providing caring for her personally. (I saw this one up close for about 8 months) And my uncle died 2 years ago of lung cancer. It was relatively quick and only took 3 months. I didn’t see him much, I believe because he was ashamed of the condition he was in. I may not have gone through it personally but I definitely know what it’s like.

I don’t know anyone that doesn’t have a story like this about someone close to them, everyone has lost someone, and it’s not normally quick. Honestly it makes me feel slightly dirty even posting this, but presuming that someone has no idea what they’re going through or can’t “understand” because we’re healthy is just plain wrong.

Once again I mean no offense to the OP in anyway, and apologize to her and anyone else that is in anyway offended by anything I might have posted.
