Yeah the drop rate from bags is insane. Not sure why it was quite as bad as it was mind you considering the backlash from the halloween mini pet…

Yeah but with the aquabreather we had an alternative – the PvP reward track dropped it reliably. So it was sort of okay.

Actually, that’s true. I always overlook that as I don’t pvp, but yes, that actually is a pretty decent alternative way to get things with the new track system

Even if you don’t PvP: You can cheese out your PvP dailies in one of the “dailies” custom servers. Put the resulting PvP bonus potions in your bank. It takes almost exactly 2 weeks to save up 80 potions – that is enough to instantly finish a future reward track.

So when the next temporary reward track is added, you don’t have to make time for PvP, just insta-finish it.

According to this: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Giant_Wintersday_Gift/research

The drop rate is extremely low. We don’t have enough drop research for an actual number, but in the above table you see a single aquabreather drop from over 12.000 Wintersday Gifts.

If it was a guaranteed drop, we’d be looking at 720 gold right there.

Since there’s (sadly) not much use for an exotic aquabreather anyway, I think it is best to wait for next Wintersday and/or the Deep Sea Dragon expansion.

If you already have the skill challenges done you wont have to do anything. They arent resetting anyones map completion. The people complaining are those that literally just scroll leveled and unlocked everything.

Any reason you make this sound like it’s not a legitimate way of leveling a character? ANet deliberately added tomes and skill scrolls to PvP, and skill scrolls to WvW, specifically to enable players to level their characters this way.

[Suggestion] Adding "Toys & Tonics" tab

Endless tonics are gizmos, toys are gizmos, but one-use tonics are neither of the two.

I don’t think it would be too useful to a) split up endless and one-use tonics – they should be available through the same dialogue, as finishers are – or b) wade through 140+ tonics to find a tool that doesn’t fit in with the rest of the list…

This is why a tonic-only (or any transform, like instruments) tab is a great solution. Have some one-off tonics? Treat them like one-off finishers. If I had to guess, I’d say this would be relatively easy, technically speaking. The only issue is that you have to store the extra data for who has unlocked what.

I am hoping for exactly this. I think one of the bigger obstacle would be that (unlike finishers) relatively many of the tonics use the same icons (for example all the mystic forge ones). I hope that some of the more obscure consumables that are not strictly considered tonics would be included as well (Hylek potions, growth potion, selfless/thoughtless potion, …).

I guess you COULD group instruments with those, but a separate tab for toys, as the OP suggested, would still be preferable to me and my sense of order.

The only thing I really don’t want to see in a tonics tab at all is townclothes tonics – I’d much rather see them converted into outfits instead.

Make it “Toys & Tools” instead. Tonics count as toys, and that way we also get unlimited gathering tools, salvage-o-matics, the mystic forge node, everolasting makeover kits and other everlasting tools usable by all characters independently without having to constantly trade them in the bank.

Endless tonics are gizmos, toys are gizmos, but one-use tonics are neither of the two.

Frequent suggestion, and I +1 it every time.

I currently have 2 mules full of tonics. That was my idea, and is my problem. But the thing is, ANet: if they were more conveniently available,

  • I would use my existing tonics all the time, instead of having them rot away on a mule, even the one-time consumable ones, thus making use of the gold sink that tonics could be
  • I would use my existing toys and buy new toys from the gem store

Sooooo… win-win? More convenience and fun for the players, and more hard currency as well as gold-sinkage for you?

Why is everything time gated?

Timegating Ascended gear? Well I guess sure w/e, maybe there’s some reason to timegate top-tier gear.

Timegating Charged Quartz Crystals? Why do I have to wait 30 days of converting quartz crystals to craft a set of Celestial armor? No other armor requires me to wait 30 days for a full set of exotic armor…

Ascended gear is not time-gated. You can get everything you need and craft a full set right here and now. The only thing that is time-gated is the bonus that you save some money if you craft everything yourself as opposed to buying it off the trading post. Except if you want to craft a celestial ascended set.

Celestial stats are treated differently for historical reasons. When they were introduced (as craftable), the stats set included Magic Find – which made the stat combo very popular for farming armor sets. That was before the introduction of Ascended armor. When ANet went ahead and removed Magic Find from the armor (and introduced account-wide Magic Find instead), they couldn’t very well change the system by which charged quartz is acquired, because so many players had already put in the effort. And so that’s where the stat set remains. It still holds a special place among the stat sets, so in my opinion it’s not the end of the world that it is treated in this special way.

Either way, that’s really only one time-gated thing in an ocean of things that are available to use 24/7.

Do you use all those characters in WvW? Thats the only way i see it being an issue. If they are PvP you get everything. If they just sit in cities you dont need anything. If you do dungeons and guildmissions i suspect you have waypoints to get the skillpoints pretty fast. And i honestly cant imagine you have a need for 17 alts for anything other than cosmetic purposes. So surely it doesnt matter for most of them?

I know its annoying. But i dont really see a way round it. Blame anet for introducing an abundance of skillpoints to the game. I think you are just going to have to suck it up. The system afterwards will be better anyway. People are just too used to getting everything unlocked through scrolls.

Thos are valid questions.

No, in fact I don’t WvW at all – and I recognize that WvW players will be hit by this even harder than weird PvP-PvE hybrid players like me.

I almost exclusiely play my main in PvE. I love PvE. I love exploring, I love playing through the story, and all that. On my main. When after 3000+ hours I more or less ran out of things to do in PvE, I started spending more and more time in PvP. Tomes and skill scrolls were raining from the skies, so I finally leveled my first set of alts (one of everything) to 80. Do they need PvE skill and trait unlocks and PvE gear in PvP? Of course not.

The reason I have 1-of-everything PvE-ready is that I want to be able to swtich to one of them in a pinch when I need to. That includes the use of the characters in dungeons and fractals, but, importantly, also for achievements (such as Queen’s Gauntlet and Living World achievements). While I do most achievements on my main, sometimes a specific class and build are what makes it possible. So that’s what I use my alts for. In the future that will include the ability to switch in and out of elite specializations along with the rest of the skills/traits.

I’m not cranky that future characters will have to unlock skill challenges for hero points. So be it. I’m cranky that my existing, geared and traited and read-to-use characters are downgraded by the upgrade. I spent time and energy getting them to where they are now, and I don’t want to spend the same time and effort on the same characters again, doing menial tasks for weeks, to regain their usefulness.

If you played since release surely you have some skill challenges done in the maps while you were leveling? Which means you will be fine.

As for giving all current 80’s everything. That wont work. Hero points are supposed to be a finite number. So if you havent done all the skillpoints already and you get everything unlocked for free then you are going to have more hero points than any new characters. Which breaks the idea of a fixed amount of hero points per character.

Honestly i dont get the complaint. It would take about an hour at best to get those 65 extra skill challenges for one character. Suck it up its not the end of the world.

My main has world completion, my 17 alts do not.17 * 3 hours (possibly more, to unlock elite specializations) = 51 hours: more than a full-time work week. That I would have to spend to unlock what I had already unlocked, spending lots and lots of hours in PvP.

51+ hours of repetitive grind to catch up = not cool.

Do you really not have any skill challenges done on all those alts? And do you really need to go through that on every one of them? You certainly dont need to rush. And you can do them now 30 mins a day. Issue solved before it even becomes an issue. It shouldnt take more than 3 hours to rush to 65 skill points. And im confident it can be a lot faster.

Im going to have to do skill challenges on about 6 of my alts. But i dont see that as a cause for complaint. My concern is the huge amounts of gold i spent last month on buying the rest of my traits for those less used classes. :P

Most (not all) of my alts have never left their home city (except to travel to Lion’s Arch maybe), I really leveled them with tomes and skills scrolls. On the alts that have done some traveling around (to dungeon entrances or whatever), skill challenges were not at all a priority so I ignored them completely…

And yes, I am aware that I can do it bit by bit – but that doesn’t change the fact that it still totals 50+ hours of doing something I don’t want to do. It doesn’t matter if I do them in one go or spread out over many days, 50 horus is 50 hours.

That is 50 hours out of my leisure time that I want to spend in PvP, dungeons, guild missions, or doing the story on my main – that I want to use to do fun things, not chores.

I realize that fun things means something different to everybody, and if ANet introduce something new that I don’t enjoy, I have no problem simply not doing it. But usually that doesn’t go hand in hand with taking away progress I already made on my existing characters, so I’m not forced to do it in order to catch up with what I already had.

> Why is everything time gated?

Does anybody care to make a list of GW2 features that are time-gated… versus those that are not?

Everything would include everything right?
But it takes time for the light to travel from the screen to your eyes, then time for the nerves to trigger, then time to get a responce to that trigger, then time to have that responce acted apon by your body, then time for that action to be forwarded from your keyboard to the computer to the internet to the server to be processed and then sent back through the loop.
So yeah everything is time gated.

Of course everything is time-gated. Breathing is time-gated. It takes time to play and run to locations and build up resources. But that’s not what OP means.

OP means recipes and acquisition methods that are gated by ANet in addition to the natural limitations of playing any game (or being alive…).

Off the top of my head:

  • rewards from dailies
  • daily crafting, limited to ascended mats and some Mawdrey components
  • charging quartz crystal
  • world boss rewards
  • cheesing out points in hotjoin
  • daily bonus rewards from dungeon paths and fractal tiers

However, you can still DO or acquire almost all of these things, you just don’t get the daily special bonus reward for them. (Yes, even the ascended mats – you can simply buy them on the TP.) The only thing that is genuinely time-gated (and not just an additional bonus that you get once a day) is charging quartz. Oh, and it’s a shame that you can’t play your favourite activity every day of the week. So that’s 2 things, I guess.

Imagine a game in which you could only level up once a day, charm one pet per day, or other things would be time-gated such as dying armor pieces, using Asura portals, spawning world bosses, crafting account-bound (as opposed to TP-buyable) materials, taking part in activities, using tonics, or entering dungeons/fractals. Then, yes, I would complain about “everything” being time-gated, too…

Yes, if. But we (in this thread) didn’t.

I do all PvE/story on my main, but leveld all my alts (7 level 80s) in PvP which drops both tomes AND skill scrolls.

And players who have leveled all their alts, or even all their characters full stop, in WvW are just as screwed.

I’ve read few of these threads now, and I struggling to understand what the issue is exactly. If we get all of our skill points spent on traits refunded back as hero points we should be able to unlock everything to the same extent that we had before. That should include all the old skill point challenges (the new hero challenges?). I doubt Anet will deliberately short change people and incur the wrath of pretty much the whole community. I’m I missing something here?

Yes, the fact that many characters (of players who prefer PvP and/or WvW for leveling) haven’t done any skill challenges, but instead used skill scrolls.

For instance, at the the of HoT I will have 17 alts – 7 are already level 80 and currently have all traits and skills unlocked, but no map completion/no skill challenges. With the new system, I will have to unlock 25% or more of Tyrian maps on every single one of those, instead of spending my time in PvP kitten far I was able to (while still being able to fully level/gear/trait/outfit my characters).

Guess my sister is adopted then...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

Why does she have to be adopted? It’s possible for a black/white couple to have a white-looking baby and a black-looking baby. This has even been the case with fraternal twins.

Yes but as roleplayers (even in the broadest sense) we assume that imagining our parents is up to us, and I think few players would go so far to explicitely imagine their character’s parents to be a mixed-race couple. It’s just not what comes to mind first.

So if I play a character that is based on culture x, I am pretty likely to assume that both the character’s parents were also from culture x, and then the game suddenly says, “think again!”

That being said, before this thread, I had no idea there even were 3 versions of Deborah, and I’m kind of impressed by the fact and the way ANet did this.

Grandfathering using negative hero points?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

My friend suggested the same thing. Yes, it would mean that our PvP- and WvW-leveled characters are usable to the same degree.

It sort of effectively wouldn’t solve anything as we’d still have to regain the sam 65 hero points before we could even beging to unlock the elite specializations – but I guess from a “legal” point of you we’d lose the right to complain.

It wouldn’t be a great compromise, but it’d shut me up…

A different idea would be to tie additional heropoints to WvW ability tracks or WvW/PvP achievements or something similar. The problem is that all those are currently account bound while heropoints are supposed to be soulbound.

Or to add heropoints to non-repeatable PvP reward tracks (can be repeated once, or x times per character).

Or do something in PvP or WvW that unlocks a certain number heropoints for all new alts.

These options would mean that heropoints would still be finite, but add a few different ways to gain them.

But either way, I’ll probably bite the bullet and just start working on map completion on my 17 alts while watching TV.

You already have the option… just take off your shirt! Some players do that. Maybe not in high level fractals and WvW, and somewhat rarely in PvP, but in general PvE just… take your shirt off?

Then I lose Rune Bonus in PvE and take extra damage in PvP, I want to do more than sit in town.

Yeah, but come on… PvE is faceroll enough, you’ll be 100% fine without rune bonus and chest piece stats in open world, and probably dungeons too.

And while I personally wouldn’t PvP without chest piece, I see shirtless characters fairly regularly in unranked.

I’m just saying that if you want to ditch the chest piece bad enough, you can do it.

I only play PvP and lvl 50 Fractals, I just would like the option to have my character look how I wish while playing – as do the majority of posters in this thread. If you’re not against the idea (as you advocate removing the top) why not support the addition of a toggle button?

Because I don’t necessarily want to deal with the fallout of every troll character running around in a yellow bra. :/

Because the bulk of SPs will come from levels, the importance of skill challenges has been downplayed, so alt characters won’t need to do something crazy like 100% world completion to get the full legacy set. This softens the problem, and might have been the best solution they have found.

It’s 25% (more to unlock elite specializations) of the world map; that may not sound much, but multiplied with my 17 affected alts, it is a major pain in the butt.

Also, I think they mentioned that you get about 80% of the Hero points you need to unlock everything (at least for the Core Specializations and skills) simply by leveling. (Based on the summary on Reddit/dulfy, it’s right now 465 hero points to unlock everything, and leveling will get you 400)

Excluding elite specializations (sub classes). Those will require more hero points. I currently have 7 level 80s that barely even left their home city, that’s kitten (repetitive) skill challenges to catch them up to even where they’re now. (Not to mention my other characters who I planned to level through PvP)

Traits Part 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

So, my question is this…

There are 202 skill challenges in old map completion (counting the 12 or 13 in WvW). Do the remaining Hero Challenges count toward anything (e.g., mastery), or is that a separate system with different unlocks?

I would assume that the remaining unused hero points remain on that character until such time future elite specializations are released.

Traits Part 2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

This system just doesn’t feel alt friendly at all. Which is very surprising considering the direction that HoT has been taking with making things alt friendly (such as the way masteries will work). Anet, PLEASE take alts into consideration when you think about how you want this system to work. I do not want to be running around on every single character doing hero challenges over and over again for skills I already unlocked.

Not sure how it’s not alt friendly. Assuming you’re leveling your alts to 80 (and if you’re not going into higher level zones not sure why you need traits anyway), you’ll get most of the hero points you need just from that. You can fill in what you want by doing skill point challenges, now call hero point challenges.

Are you saying going and getting some skill points is a big deal.

And if you’re only PvPing it’s all unlocked anyway so in theory the only people for whom it wouldn’t be alt friendly are WvWer’s who don’t PvE at all.

a lot of people didnt level their chrs by map complete.
wvw
scrolls
eotm
crafting

while one skill challenge is easy, 65 is not so much.

65, PLUS the points you need to unlock the subclass stuff.

So that equals between 25% and 50% of known Tyria. With 19 alts (all leveled in PvP), that is kind of a big deal for me. If I have to run my alt through Tyria and do skill challenges, I can live with that, but I really, really don’t want to do it 19 times over.

19 characters!? O_o

I must ask, do you play with all of them on a daily basis? If not, then I guess just get the full unlocks for the characters you use the most. I only have 8, with a 9th coming the second Revenant is released (one for every class, 4 of which are the other races other than Charr), which is why I guess this doesn’t bug me to the level it would people with that many characters.

No, I play my main most of the time, but I wanted a level 80 of each class. Now that I’m done with that, I am planning out my second set of “one of each class” because I like to create characters.

My alts I use for PvP class dailies and PvP achievements – no problem there – but I also gear them out in PvE gear and builds so I can use them in dungeons/fractals/living story achievements if/when I need to (and in each case, I need to be able to trait and skill up “for the occasion”, rather than running an allrounder PvE build).

Usually I just unlock them most important waypoints and that’s it. No, I don’t play them on a daily basis at all, but when I do, I do. So far, I haven’t had to spend hours and hours map-completing with them in order to have them PvE-ready

Pixelpumpkin.4608

Will we get new items that give hero points for playing SPvP or find them in player loot bags in WvWvW?

If not, it would be a huge nerf to progression via PvP avenues.

Unlocking all skills and traits (except elite specializations like Druid) will require 465 hero points. You get 400 by getting to level 80. The other 65 you will have to obtain through hero challenges (currently skill challenges). As far as we know, pure PvP or WvW players will have to go into PvE to unlock everything since there are no skill challenges in PvP and very few in WvW.

Pure PvP players wouldn’t have to care because everything will be unlocked in PvP.

As has been the situation so far – right now, all skills and traits are unlocked in PvP, and yet ANet deliberately added skill scrolls to reward tracks (as well as WvW champ bags, of course). PvP and WvW players were specifically enabled to level their characters in PvP/WvW and unlock all skills for PvE – now this is being changed back. Why?

I level all my alts in PvP, but once level 80 I do gear them up for PvE in case I want/need to use a specific one in a dungeon, fractal or living story achievement run – and so far I have been able to do that without completing up to half of Tyria’s maps with each one of my alts, inlcuding my already existing ones.

And that should be changed. I dont see the point in running with 11 of my chars through hero challnges over and over to unlock the last skills and traits i had alrdy previously. They should at least make something for the older players to get all skills and traits without the pain of herochallenges. This game is alrdy 3 years old. Dont see the point in doing old stuff for old things in a new disguise. And this is the third time they change trait system. Its should be enough. i just want my char at 80 and play new challanges not old one.

With 9 PvP-leveled alts (and 10 more in the works) I absolutely agree.

65+ skill challenges don’t sound like a big deal, but that stuff adds up. I am not looking forward to 25-50% map completion (times 19) at all.

This is awful for the people who choose to level through WvWvW or PvP.

Map completionists have a much better time under this system, but WvWvW has an extremely limited number of skill challenges available to them, and actually going to do them means that you’re taking up a slot for your world without contributing anything.

PvP might as well just not give tomes of knowledge anymore, because the characters leveled through it will be crippled by the lack of traits.

It seems as though this is even more of a step back. Under system 1 I could still play my release date mesmer and thief. Now it sounds as though I’m restricted to just my world completion mesmer. Wonderful.

1. There’s no need to go through the unlocking process in PvP. Everything will be unlocked automatically.

This already applies right now, and yet skill scrolls were consciously added to PvP reward tracks (as well as available through WvW champ bags).

Why change that now?
Especially retroactively for all existing characters?

Darn…that means I gotta at least do part of the Orr stuff. I hate that place! Oh well. Thank you for the info.

Actually, even if you have to go through half of Tyria for the skill challenges, you can avoid Orr completely, but it will be repetitive and annoying anyway.

My best advice is to either wait for new announcements and see if maybe we misunderstood, or ANet makes some adjustments; or if they confirm that this is the new deal start unlocking skill points in PvE early and casually. The game will remember which skill points each of your character has unlocked, and award the correct number of hero points when the change is released.

Map Completion and Hero Points

As to our knowledge right now, yes, to some degree.

  • Leveling to 80 will reward 400 hero points.
  • Map completion will reward 250 hero points.
  • You will need 65 hero points or 25% of maps worth of hero challenges to max out your character; that is before elite specializations.
  • So if you want to use one of the new subclasses, more map-running.

(Subject to change, subject to additional information by ANet)

I have 9 alts currently that I leveld through PvP and planned to create 10 more – and I am not at all looking foreard to doing the above 19 times. This only negatively affects players who predominantly PvP or WvW.

ANet added skill scrolls to PvP reward tracks (and to WvW loot via champ bags) before so PvPers/WvWers wouldn’t have to send their alts through PvE to unlock everything – not sure why they decided to revert that change.

Out of interest, why shouldn’t we argue jumping puzzles? I do them all the te :P

I trait into and out of falling damage on the fly when I roam PvE, but with HoT, I will try to work it into my build permanently, because I expect that I will do a lot of falling, especially during the first few weeks of exploring the new maps.

Ah well I mean anything that’s not bulky really, like made of cloth.

Chest: Krytan (gemstore), Duelist or Scout’s

Pants: Aetherblade (gemstore), Duelist or Scout’s

Shoes: Assassin’s (human cultural)

Something like that?

Oh yeah that’s another thing, am I actually able to separate different parts of a gem store outfit?

Not of a gemstore outfit, but of a gemstore armor set. Aetherblade and Kryten are both armor sets, so when you buy them, you unlock sic separate skins each (helmet, shoulders, chest, gloves, pants and shoes). I bought the Aetherblade medium set specifically for the tights, and another set for the gloves…. Just make sure that it’s not called <name> Outfit.

Ok, thanks for the bank tip. Looks like the stuff I’m interested in is all in Light Armor. Oh well it’s mostly for RP and hanging around, so I suppose I can make an alt for it. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you’re looking for the town clothes we used to have: check out town clothes tonics, e.g. Cherry Blossom Shirt or Country Lace.

I can’t find a gallery of up-to-date screenshots right now, but I own most of them and could take screenshots for you later. But let me know race / gender of your character.

You didn’t specify race or gender or what kind of look you’re going for, so it’s not easy to suggest skins for your character – but I can leave this here: gw2style search

Concerns about the new Hero Points system for WvWers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It’s so weird – ANet only just made the changes to PvP so tomes and skill scrolls drop there. That was a conscious decision on their part to allow people to unlock PvE skills through playing in PvP. (Because as of right now, in PvP all skills are unlocked – you don’t need the skill scrolls for that.)

And in the future, I will have to take each one of my alts and run them through 25-50% of Tyrian maps and hunt the same skill (hero) challenges over and over, just to get to the same point that I’m already at right now… that does not make me happy.

I understand this – so far, traits and skills were already unlocked in PvP. But PvP also dropped skill scrolls to unlock skills for PvE (and WvW).

I am asking whether there will be a replacement mechanism for this.

I have a question for the Q&A: The second blog post said that the Hero Points are strictly only from what is currently Skill Challenges, but what about characters leveled through WvW or Tomes of Knowledge for use in WvW? Won’t this automatically mean that players who’ve chosen to dedicate themselves to WvW cannot earn enough Hero Points to make diverse builds or experiment with builds at will?

Obviously you can tell them to go and complete the Skill Challenges, but if we are talking about even 4 alts (assuming main character has full map completion), grinding all those Skill Challenges can hardly be labeled as fun if you’d rather be out in WvW killing enemies. Couldn’t there be an alternative way to earning the Hero Points through purchasing Hero Point granting items with Badges of Honor and gold?

This question, please. Will hero points drop from PvP reward tracks?

I don’t know if I understand correctly so maybe someone can confirm this for me.

  • Right now, I cen create a new character, level it with tomes, and unlock all skills with skill scrolls. That means, I can create and level a character in PvP, and it will be fully usable in PvE.
  • In the future I will (probably) be able to create a new character, level it with tomes, but will be 65 skill points short to unlock all skills. Scrolls of knowledge will award crafting materials, so I will have to take my alt into PvE and do skill challenges?

I would be a tiny little bit upset if I had to take all my new (and existing) alts and run them through half of Tyria to (re-) unlock their skills/traits.

How large did you make your Asura and why?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pixelpumpkin.4608

Pixelpumpkin.4608

As with any other race, for me it depends entirely on the character.

My female Asura warrior is on the shorter end as she is pretty young, but on the bulkier end because she is, uh, a klutz, and not much for precision work.

My male Asura (waiting for character slots to go on sale) will be a little taller than average and very slim.
