The current problem with Meta events, is… There is no change of failing the event

but from a business perspective, it’s better to have something that looks cool and gives the player a false sense of accomplishment along side a small loot reward rather than have hundreds of players complaining on forums “Events are too hard!, NERF NERF”

In the beginning, when we were all “of appropriate level” and not maxed out, we failed the meta-events quite often. There is other event chains that get triggered in case of fails that we got to play instead.

I don’t think it is a business decision at all; I do think that the events don’t scale correctly. They should scale in a way that there is a 20-40% chance that an event fails, no matter how many level 80s are participating. Otherwise we’ll just keep missing out on the alternative line content.

Also, it depends on the map and time; Bloodtide Coast is pretty empty off-peak, and we’ve been trying to do the group events with 4-5 people and failed.

making them even more random only means most people will never see these events leveling 8 chars to lvl 80, always finished all starter areas with them, I never saw the jungle wurm during leveling. what about the people who only have 1 or 2 chars?

I have been thinking about this, but it could be solved on a technical level by increasing the spawn chance drastically while at least one character is in the vicinity who hasn’t encountered the event yet. It would be easy enough to keep track of how many times an individual character has been in a specific event so the chance could just go down over time.

For a new character, it would be “bound to happen”. For regular farmers standing in ever the same spot – they could be waiting for a long time.

GW2 is chock full of lore; I noticed this once I started to slow down and actually listen to what the NPCs are saying instead of rushing from reward to reward.

The lore you get is still very limited and you have to go out of your way to experience it.
They shouldn’t just toss everything in your face but some basic stuff about the world should be easily available for the players.

To give an example: why isn’t there a flavour text or popup for POIs? Why do I have to go google the lore of the game to find out why POI #234 is a point of interest in any way?

I would like flavour texts for POIs.

(I would also like to have the patience to read every single heart letter instead of just taking the coin and deleting them… I’ve missed out on a lot of lore mostly through my own ignorance.)

Player Base: male and female ratio?

My boyfriend and I were new to dungeons and had a few sub-par experiences with PUGs, so he made a post on the server-specific forum asking if anybody would be willing to group up with us and show us how it works. We got many awesome people offering to help us out. Almost ALL of them were women. (Even I was surprised.)

So, there’s that.

The other person we run dungeons with is a player that we randomly met in a jumping puzzle, also turned out to be a woman. But last time she brought a male friend.

Seeing players camp dragon events is sort of depressing.

I’ve done it too (I am currently going after The kittena lot hoping for the boss achievement) and I’ve been trying to make conversation with people there via /say or /map, but most players are too bored to even say something, just standing there like zombies waiting for their brain meal to show.

Sigh.

A Real Personal Story.

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I really like the personal story. GW2 is an MMO, not a single player RPG, so I expected it to be somewhat half-kittened, and I actually got more than I expected.

That being said, after my initial enthusiasm over the first part (personal), and my engagement in the second part (order), I quickly saw that the thrid part (Trahearne) was pretty generic. I see why they had to do this and I applaud ANet for pulling this off at all! (Many exclamation marks!!!) But… the last part of the personal story still felt kind of empty.

I like the OPs suggestion of making the arc back to the home instance. The home instances are already there and could be put to great use. The further adventures could be episodic, so you wouldn’t be limited to just a select few.

And how about combining this with the ever-recurring subject of player housing as a reward?

In short: the details are super vague in my mind but I believe the OP is right and it COULD be pulled off with limited resources. I would love to see it. It would also be a new incentive for me to finally finish Traheane’s my personal story so far to get to the personal bits again.

If at some point in the future more dwarves would surface that would be pretty epic, but it would have to be at a point in time when the community is really, really convinced that this would never happen. Then it would have an impact. But they would all be NPCs.
Anyway, I don’t see it happen.

I usually play Orcs whenever available, but hey, they don’t have them here, so I got over it and picked something else.

I’d rather see some of the established races turned into player races. (Skritt, in particular. <3)

Bank space for crafting intermediates

Pixelpumpkin.4608

I made it through my crafts without like everybody else, and did so back when you had to place all the intermediates back into your inventory to use them -_- That change made it a lot easier for me, but yes, more space would be helpful. It is sort of weird that that you can store wood and wood planks in your storage, but not dowels.

With Chef there is the additional problem that the recipe are not as straight forward, so for the longest time I have held on to veggie pizzas and whatever else, knowing that there were other recipes in there but never finding them. I eventually resorted to gw2db/wiki and also gave most of the food away. I would have preferred to be able to solve these myself in-game, but that would have required more storage space for intermediates that I didn’t have.

Hearts aren’t quests. Hearts are a way to draw people to were Dynamic Events are occuring and to encourage them to stick to the area long enough to maybe partake of them. Dynamic Events are ArenaNet’s answer to Quests.

I hadn’t thought of it in this specific way, but it makes total sense. Thank you!

Variety of options. You’re trying to earn someone’s trust, affection, esteem, whatever. There’s no reason why you should need to bring them exactly ten wolf pelts. Renown Hearts recognize general “assistance” acts (e.g. defending the local area from hostiles, healing injured people nearby) in addition to the explicitly-stated objectives (e.g. rounding up Moas). The explicit objectives often include several alternatives, just in case players have difficulty with a particular task (or find it boring). It’s often possible to make progress on a Renown Heart while participating in Dynamic Events nearby.

This ^ I really like the way the hearts are implemented. Yes, many of them have tasks like “kill n of x” but there is always alternatives, and some of them are completely different: barter with jotuns, escape the bunnies…

1. Keep number of buttons at a minimum – I imagine that this has it’s benefits. But to some degree! Why there is no quick use bar yet? (for miniatures and consumables) How is that helpful?

But let’s be perfectly honest here: how often do you eat food? I consume food, artisan oils etc. every 30 minutes, max. The inventory is just one button away.

It would be a different story if I had to go into my inventory every few seconds. There are consumables that we consume a lot more often, but they are ALREADY on the quick use bar: they were turned into skills. (Elixirs, kits to equip – sorry my main is an engineer so this is the engineers perspective, but other classes have similar skills. It doesn’t matter if you call it potion/elixir or prayer if it has the same effect.)
So yes, you have healing potions on your quick bar already, AND an unlimited supply of them. (Show some gratitude?)
You also already have a button swap weapon sets.

An additional item quick bar wouldn’t hurt (as long as it could be disabled for people who play on smaller screens) but I certainly don’t see it as a necessity, let along an obvious one.

Problem is that there is no story or lore tied to the hearts (or it’s at minimum). And that makes them so horribly boring. Also the world feels so empty with just a few hearts there and no one that you can talk to.

This makes me wonder whether we have been playing the same game. There is a ton of lore going on in hearts as well as other NPC dialogues. Every NPC has their own little viewpoint, their own little window into the wealth of information. I missed most of this on my first run through the world because I was too busy chasing rewards and didn’t take the time to stop and listen and engage with the NPCs. Maybe you’re doing the same?

3. No standard Quest journal – really ANet? That huge brick of text at the right side of the screen is better then RPG style journal?! How? In what universe?

I love how you stumble into situations, hear that something’s going on nearby, the “huge brick” is more than subtle enough for me (I wish I could keep more than 2 of them expanded, actually).

And the things that are supposed to be life-changers, in terms of lore questing, are kept track of in your personal story chapters.

Bottom line, what you call obvious flaws I don’t see as flaws. People are different and have different preferences. Maybe many people would prefer GW2 to be more like WOW. I know many people who don’t.

As a guy, I find Skritt to be really cool and they make me smile… but Quaggans are just far too cutesy (though still amusing at times) to have been designed by a guy for a male audience.

Really? Woman number 4 here who prefers Skritt over Quaggans (my boyfriend loves them though).

We signed up as a couple, but I play more than him. Both of us had an MMO background before we met. If you assume that I am only here as my boyfriend’s “+1”, based on my gender, then sorry, I find that a little bit insulting; like I can’t have my own genuine interests. I have always been a gamer, many women are.

To the OP’s question: We play on TC and sometimes I’m under the impression that the majority of players is female. I’ve been thinking about why that is. Maybe because TC is one of the servers that roleplayers claimed early on (I have my own silly gender stereotypes, it seems). Or maybe I am just under the impression that there are more women than men on our server because the women post on the forums more… ? I don’t know.

However, it is really nice to be in an environment where the distribution seems (!) even; it challenges me to not assume every player of a male character is male, etc. etc.
On the same note, I am glad that the age span is quite diverse.
Both factors make for more interesting /map chat, guild / community experiences, and so on..

I came here to say this:

It’s something we’re absolutely aware of and want to address in the future, one of my main characters is an engineer so I feel ya on this one. My poor quaggan backpack is visible like 2% of the time I play as I kit swap, never mind my weapon skins.

For the backpack problem, I would say have the option to let your backpack stay the same whenever you switch kits. A flamethrower attached to pink quaggan canisters? Yes please

As for legendary weapons, special kit effects would be very awesome.

But someone else has said it before me.

There is only a limited number of backpacks in the game right now; I know it binds resources, but I would love for them to have “kit” versions.

Anyway, leaving a running match should be equal to a loss. Or the counter should count wins, losses and forfeits (=leaving/crashing) separately. The win% would go down accordingly and the number of forfeits would be on people’s records.

Map completion is a 98% PvE feature, but you DO have to go to WvW in order to get the achievement; exposing yourself to PvP in doing so as well as taking up a space in the server threshold/queue. For the JPs you get individual achievements, but that doesn’t mean that it is a PvP achievement; it’s not like it is listed under PvP achievements – which exists as a category.

Rash: I totally see your point.

I think it’s not so bad in GW2 actually – while some people insist that “Ascalon is Russia!” or similar, I don’t necessarily see the connection. Please keep in mind that people will always try and MAKE a connection to something they know (Vulcans are high elves! Romulans are dark elves! Klingons are orcs!)

There is however a wealth of (real world) lore that is recycled over and over in fiction, and that is fine, as it is elements we already know and relate to; it would be difficult to include near-East lore (think elements from 1001 nights) without also using Arabic sounding names, and voila, you’re back in cliché-land… but at the same time, it would be a shame to lose access to this repository of fantasy motives by avoiding any references to RL cultures.

So I’m in two minds about this.

As for the OP: I don’t care whether humans can have tattoos or not; in general I am for more diversity / more options, but before adding tattoos to human style choices I would seriously rather see some additional Asura faces and such. (I don’t play Asura myself but I feel for those who do and find themselves with so limited options.)

I’d rather see tattoos as part of new armors (similar to some monk outfits in GW1) so if you want to play a tattooed pirate, you can do so as part of your pirate outfit, or whatever.

As for now, I’m happy to accept that human culture 250 after GW1 just doesn’t fancy tattoos very much. /shrug

I REALLY don’t understand why alllll the new games have achievements and think gamers give a kitten. Build an interesting world for us to explore and tough things to kill. The conquering and looting is achievement enough. I don’t need your hollow points to validate my gaming.

There is all sorts of different “motivators”, intrinsic and extrinsic ones, Different personalities respond to different motivators. Doing something for achievement points / collecting / score is just one of them, and for some people it really works as a motivator.

Achievement points (not the points themselves, rather the checkbox on my character sheet – my to do list) are what pushed me to complete jumping puzzles which otherwise I would have given up on, motivated me to check out new classes and crafts and maps and activities (PvP, WvW, keg brawls, costume brawls…) I just happen to be very responsive to this sort of motivator.

You might not be, but people are different. MMOs incorporate different motivators to be inclusive; there’s nothing wrong with that.

I’m in several guilds, and none of them require representing. Here’s a list of my guilds and why I’m a member:

- just my boyfriend and myself, we play as a team, we check out how everything works, and for reasons of vanity. Progress is slow but we don’t care. We use our guild bank for additional storage between us and I get a kick out of wearing our guild crest on my backpack.

- my “old” guild that I played GW1 with, and before, many many other games. We use it to stay in touch and to chat, and occasionally run together (through guesting). Not active as a guild in GW2 beyond that. Incidentally, even players of former rival guilds were made honorary members here; we were and are a tight community even though we’re now on different servers.

- several friendly people invited us into their guilds as casual, non-representing members so we can easily find people to dungeon with when we need to.

I would also consider joining more guilds for just PvP, just WvW, or RP or whatever other focus people have. I would also consider joining some guild to allow myself access to guild features that boyfriend and I with our measly income can’t unlock on our own (challenges). I totally understand that you shouldn’t be in two competing guilds where competition happens (PvP / WvW respectively) but not for areas without competition (PvE, RP, dungeon runs, chat, family members…).

Obviously you can only represent one of them at a time, and if a guild required me to be exclusive, I would simply refuse.

In real life, I’m a member of different circles of friends as well as different clubs as well. I wouldn’t be on two competing soccer teams, but if I want to start a regular movie night, why should that be limited to my soccer club?

TL;DR: GW2 is the most diverse MMO, allowing for many different activities, and different guilds specialise in different things. It has nothing to do with loyalty.

There are already problems with queues in WvW, so why do you feel the need to stop real WvW:ers from doing WvW by doing something completely useless for the server?

Yes, you would be taking up 1 spot and some other person who wants to do “legitimate” WvW might have to queue. However, the same is true for getting to vistas and POIs for the sake of world map completion, or through the jumping puzzles for the achievement – both of which are not only encouraged, but enabled by ANet.

(This is how I initially found my way into WvW, by the way. I am regularly taking up WvW spots in order to find out whether I have a chance to get to a certain vista, etc. Sorry or whoever has to queue, but I didn’t put the vista on the map.)

If this ^ isn’t seen as a large-scale problem, then I don’t see why dueling would be.

There is other problems with the queue that should be addressed: a threshold over the queue itself that would allow you to skip the queue after crashing, being taken directly to where you crashed instead of a PvE map / starting portal, etc. There are issues with queues; I believe dueling during off hours ain’t one of them.

For what it’s worth, I don’t kill other servers’ players in my home map’s JP; chances are they’re not even into WvW and just trying to get the achievement or world map completion, and I’m not going to make it difficult for them just because I can. And on enemy maps (but not EB) I have met other players who treated me the same on their home turf and I was grateful for it.

Doubt about Norn profession

That being said, Norn are a race consisting of many individuals, and while their culture is hunter/shaman based, individual characters might not be. It is entirely possible to play a Norn character of any other profession and remain within the lore – just be creative! Ranger and warrior are the obvious, but also the more boring choices.

Elementalist: not too far-fetched for somebody whose natural element is ice and snow
Necro: not too far-fetched for somebody who is in touch with the spirit world
Guardian: like a warrior, but more in touch with the spirit world

I think Norn thieves, mesmers and engineers are rare, but like any other society you really need people of all professions.
